About this listing

This charming farmhouse is a place to get away from the hustle of the city. It sits on a 100+ acre portion of our ranch with barns, fenced fields and plenty of paths for hiking. It is amazingly secluded, but is still accessible to the rural Texas attractions surrounding Roundtop.

The space

This charming farmhouse is a place to get away from the hustle of the city. It sits on a 100+ acre ranch with barns, fenced fields and plenty of paths for walks or jogs. The front porch is an ideal place to have morning coffee or an evening cocktail as you look out over the 30 acre hayfield waving in the Southeast breeze. Two doors from the porch lead into the bedrooms. The master bedroom has a King-sized bed with a rustic carved door as a headboard and the other has 2 double beds with bright quilts. A painted desk with bookcase serves as a focal point in the room. The door from this room leads into the dining room and then onto the bright recently remodeled kitchen. All these rooms have tall beaded ceilings and wooden walls original to the 1920's. The master bedroom leads onto a hallway to the bathroom and then to the sunlit living room with a sofa facing a wall of bookcases surrounding a window. The farmhouse is filled with eclectic art, antiques and books

A door from the living room leads to to large yard with rose-beds, fruit trees-pear, fig, pomegranate, and mulberry and pecans trees. A swing set that has given hours of fun for our 4 children is sited where parents can keep an eye on it from the kitchen and living-room. A short distance from the living room door an old smokehouse serves as a laundry and workshop and houses the water filtration system. The original family smoked their sausage and meats in the back room. The outbuildings consist of a large round-bale hay barn, a four bay barn, a corn-crib and a long cattle barn with corrals where our children played. A walk around the secluded property takes you to pastures, hay-meadows, oak filled woods, ponds and a seasonal stream with no other houses in sight. At night there are no visible lights from the house-great stargazing. If you want a family getaway this farmhouse should be your choice. However, it also offers easy access to sophisticated and fun places and activities.

The surrounding area

Located 100 miles from Houston and 60 from Austin, it is an easy drive for a weekend or longer vacation. The towns of Round Top and Fayetteville are nearby and with Festival Hill Music Festival and Fayetteville Chamber Concerts as well as the twice yearly Antique Festivals with thousands of dealers you can experience world-class music and shopping. Shakespeare at Winedale offers the Bard at a historic stagecoach stop. Other excursions include visits to The Antique Rose Emporium, Bluebell Creamery, The Painted Churches, The Barbecue Trail (including our favorite-The City Meat Market in Giddings) local firemen's feasts, 4th of July parade in Round Top, the Houston-Austin MS150 bicycle ride and local holiday celebrations like the Lane of Lights with a hayride in Ledbetter. Attractions such as these and the privacy and peace of the farmhouse make this an ideal spot to have a family reunion, a holiday vacation, write your novel, paint, finish your thesis or sabbatical or have a romantic escape.

Guest access

Guests will have full access to the house and will be able to wonder over the entire property which is over 100 acres situated on our ranch in a rural setting with no other visible houses. There will also be access to the secluded pond (called a tank in here in Texas) where our kids learned to swim.

Interaction with guests

There will be no interaction with guests other than that required with the ranch manager should his help be needed for problems.

Very nice house to get away from the city life. Do be aware that there are gravel roads necessary to get to the house and the water does have a bit of a metallic smell to it, but overall a great experience. Lots of roaming room both on foot and via bicycle.

If you are looking for a country get-away where you can take deep breaths, drink wine on a front porch, and watch cows for entertainment (we did!) this is your place. But in all seriousness, it is an excellent spot to do some Roundtop antique-ing and hang with girlfriends. We loved it!! Thank you Barbara!

If you are looking for a serene, quiet, in the country experience, this home offers it all. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. The best part was drinking coffee early in the morning rocking on the porch and enjoying vistas of countryside with not another soul in sight. Best part was being close to all the small small towns for good food, antiques, junking and being with friends.

Sorry about the hairdryer. Someone must moved it or it broke and they didn't tell me. I'll be sure to get a new one.

Barbara is a wonderful host, they answered all our questions quickly. The home had everything we needed and the kitchen was well equipped for cooking. The property was fun to explore and it's in a great area close to lots of things to visit.

Loved our stay in this house! It was charming and provided a serene environment to come home to after shopping among the throngs of people in town for the Antique Show! The house is exactly as described and was very neat and tidy. There is no wifi and even a cell phone signal was hard to pick up at times. But, hey, the house IS in a rural area in the middle of the countryside. So, it wasn't that surprising and we were able to work around it. Since the house is on a beautiful farm, there is wildlife all around you. There are also some very vocal coyotes that will actually come up near the house and start howling. Everyone thought it sounded like a human and it was rather comical at the ruckus a coyote could cause among 3 scared women! We eventually figured out what it was and we all died laughing. Coyotes are generally more afraid humans than we are of them. But, that night was the exception! I would absolutely recommend this property to someone who is looking for something away from the bustle of the city. We sat on the porch and watched the most beautiful sunrise....and you just can't put a price on that!

Married couple, live in Houston and plan to retire on our ranch in rural Texas. We plan to use Taos as our summer retreat from the heat of Texas if our kids don't give us grandchildren to keep us here. We both like gardening, cooking, and collecting art. Many Taos artists work is displayed in the house.
