Fully furnished three bedroom hacienda on 33 acres. Three bedrooms - sleeps 8; two baths, living room, three fireplaces, and high speed internet. Prepare your meals in a well-appointed kitchen and eat in the dining room or new breakfast/ bistro room. Price per night includes tax of 14%.

The space

The Tranquil Place is indeed a wonderful location for tranquility and reflection. Nestled in the Andean highlands near the town of Cotacachi (great for all manner of leather goods at very reasonable prices), it’s a convenient 75-minute ride northwest from Ecuadors’s new international airport.

We have three bedrooms, a spacious dining area and kitchen, fireplaces, large tiled floors that evoke a gracious hacienda feeling, two showers, and an absolutely killer view from the front porch that looks out on mountain terrain and farm land. On clear days, you can see the Cayambe Volcano. On cloudy days, put on a jacket (it rarely gets colder than 55F/12C in the mornings and evenings), sip a beverage, and marvel at the clouds that play among the Andean peaks. Shopping is nearby in Cotacachi, so you can cook up a storm if you choose to eat in. And do not miss out on the famous open-air market in Otavalo, a 15-minute car drive from the Tranquil Place. In addition to superb fruits and veggies, the market’s sweaters, jackets and scarfs made from alpaca by local artisans, make very cool gifts.

Other things to note

Sustainable Living

The Tranquil Place (TTP) in Ugshapungo, Ecuador is situated on 33 acres of prime volcanic farm land at 3240 meters (10,500 feet) elevation in the Ecuadoran Andes. We grow our crops using organic farming methods and principles of permaculture as practiced by Australians Sepp Holzer, David Holmgren and Bill Mollison. TTP's philosophy is aligned with the three basic ethics of permaculture: care for the earth, care for people, and fair share. The founders are incorporating the twelve principles of permaculture developed by David Holmgren as they design the fields, orchards, gardens and buildings. Indigenous Ecuadorians have much to teach us about sustainability with their knowledge of local fauna and non-consumptive ways of living.

If you’re looking for a perfect slice of Ecuador’s beauty and a venue to relax and recharge your spirit, your search ends here. A Tranquil Place is the perfect name for this unique property. Its Ecuadorian style house is spacious but cozy, rustic but modern, and such a pleaser. A perfect size for a couple or small family, the kitchen is very well appointed; the furnishings and artwork make you feel at home. A beautiful original fireplace in the living room is perfect for chasing away a chill or simply for ambience. Taking in the view while lazing in a swing chair on a porch is a treat in itself and words cannot describe the gift nature has bestowed upon this part of the country. When you are at A Tranquil Place, you feel private and remote when in reality you are only about 15 minutes from town where you can stock up on supplies and browse in quaint shops. About ten minutes away by car is Cuicocha Lake, where you can hike to your heart’s content and enjoy one of the wonders of the Cotacachi Cayapas Reserve. And if you’re in the mood for arguably the best trout in Ecuador at a place that boasts a magnificent view of the crater, there is a restaurant less than 2 km from your doorstep. Xavier was the very affable and consummate host and always available to see that our needs were met and our stay was pleasant and comfortable. Communication was excellent and finding the property, even in the very late evening, was easy with his fine directions. A Tranquil Place is on our list of places that we’ll surely return.

The Tranquil Place is in an incredibly beautiful setting. We enjoyed the scenery, day after day, walked to Cuicocha (a 15-minute walk) and made a day trip to the Nangulvi thermal baths. The house has all the amenities you need (full-equipped kitchen, 3 comfortable bedrooms, 2 spacious bathrooms, fireplaces, dining room with a view on the mountains). Our kids liked the playground and the selection of family-friendly DVDs. Xavier has been a great host, making sure we had everything we needed and showing us the main attractions around Cotacachi. We will keep very fond memories of our trip to Ecuador, our stay in this house, and Xavier's hospitality.

Beautiful and restful place outside Cotacachi Ecuador. The house is all it appears to be on the website...which was encouraging. Plenty of space, porch hammock swings were well used while we were there. Landscape is colorful and true to local culture. Heaters, heated bed pads, and fireplaces were a welcome delight, as it gets chilly at night. Short distance up to Lake Cuicocha, as well as close proximity to Otavalo and other tourist areas and vacation opportunities (ie. hiking, shopping, horseback riding.) We are a bit biased as we have known Xavier and his family for years, due to attending and working at Academia Alianza in Quito. This trip was long awaited and it was all we expected and more. Thank you so much Xavier for the gracious hospitality and meeting every need we had. Hopefully we will come again and enjoy this Ecuadorian airbnb. Dios le bendiga Xavier; hasta la proxima.

Tranquil Place is exactly that, tranquil. It's lovely mountainous surroundings are breathtaking. Xavier, the host is amazingly helpful. It is secluded, and exactly what you need to recharge, reconnect and get away from the rat race. After staying there my husband and I are looking at property to purchase. It's a different pace of life.

Xavier was an incredible host. He is kind, generous, and thoughtful, making sure we had everything we needed. He even drove us into town, walked us to the lake path entrance, and took the time out to show the highlights of the farm. The place is absolutely beautiful.

Xavier was a great host. From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed at the farm house. He was attentive during our stay, he provided us with wood for the chimney and assisted us with a horseback ride around the property. He knows the area very well so he gave us tips of places to visit. The listing was accurate, the house is more beautiful than what you see in the pictures. The home is well equipped, it even has heated beds! this was very useful on those cold nights. The house is in a perfect spot to see the attractions of the surrounding area by car. It also has a beautiful view and a relaxing feel. We enjoyed having breakfast in the bistro room looking out to the mountains.
