The Sauze d'Oulx / Richardette area
With great scenery, fantastic skiing and a lively après ski, a Sauze D'Oulx skiing holiday offers great value all round. Located close to the French border, the resort has impressive views and looks across to the Valle di Susa. Sauze d'Oulx is a mixture of old and new. In the town centre you will find charming narrow streets, full of boutiques selling everything from chic leather goods to fresh pasta. There are pizzerias and restaurants abound, serving delicious local food and catering for all tastes and budgets. There is no shortage of après ski and the resort's nightlife is lively, particularly at weekends. Situated at one end of the 400km (250m) lift-linked Via Lattea (Milky Way), Sauze d’Oulx is one of the larger, more popular, resorts of the area. With access to over 400km of pistes there is excellent skiing available for all abilities. Sauze provides mainly intermediate runs and is a red paradise. There is a mid resort located at just over 2000mt called Sportina. All the runs from here are tree lined whilst above Sportinia it opens up and provides the links to the rest of the Milky Way. For advanced skiers there is easy connection to Sestriere and the black runs at the top of Mount Motta and Mount Sises, and the Olympic Kandahar Slalom and Kandahar Barchetta runs. Nearer to home their is some challenging skiing off the top of Fraiteve with much of the northern face left un pisted. If you like to venture off the beaten track then Sauze offers some great off piste through the trees. As with most resorts the best off piste is locked away in the minds of locals however there are guides available to help you find the best runs. Beginners are well catered for too as Sauze d’Oulx has excellent English-speaking ski and snowboard schools that will get you up and skiing or boarding in no time at all. Sauze d’Oulx has a much better than average sunshine record and much above average skiing. The vast majority of the pistes in Sauze d’Oulx have artificial snow-making facilities which is true throughout the Milky Way. When the day has finished the town offers as much or as little apres as you like. There are plenty of bars to choose from offering you everything from sophisticated cocktails and excellent local wines to pints of Guinness. This being Italy the standard of restaurants is high. HOW TO REACH IT:
One thing that makes Sauze d’Oulx an excellent choice for your winter holiday is the ease at which it can be found. Located at one end of the Susa valley, 90km west of Turin, it is ideally situated close to major travel routes. The motorway linking Turin with Lyon runs along the valley floor making transfers from Turin airport about 1 hour. This also makes travelling by car through France a viable option. In Oulx you’ll find a train station that services not only local stations but also Paris making it possible for people to arrive from all over Europe via the train.
There are several airports that you could fly to if you were coming to Sauze d’Oulx. The nearest airport is Turin/Torino – Caselle (TRN) Location: 16km North of Turin, 90km east from Sauze. The transfer time by car is around 1 hour.
Airlines that operate a regular service from the UK are British Airways, Ryanair and FlyThomasCook.
From the Republic of Ireland Ryanair fly from Dublin every Sunday.
Onward journey from the airport: The easiest, and more often than not, the most cost effective way to get to Sauze d’Oulx would be by private transfer. Prices are typically around €30 per person (depending on group size). There is the option of taking a bus from the airport terminal to the main train station in Turin (Porta Nuova). Tickets for this can be bought from a machine in the arrivals hall and cost around €5.00. From Porta Nuova you can catch a train to Oulx. Tickets will be around €15.00. Once at Oulx train station there is a regular bus service to Sauze d’Oulx, cost €5.00.
Alternative airports: Chambery, transfer time is about 90mins, Milan Malpensa transfer time about 2 hrs. Grenoble is around 2.5 hours whilst Milan Bergamo is around 3 hrs.
Oulx is the nearest train station so if you are starting from some other point then just ask for a ticket to Oulx. From Oulx it’s a 10 minute bus journey up the mountain to Sauze.
Even from Paris Gare de Lyon where you can catch a train direct to Oulx
From Turin then there are regular trains from Turin Porta Nuova to Oulx. The journey will take approximately 1hr 30mins and cost in the region of €15.00. There are also high speed train connections between Milan and Turin. The service is called Frecciarossa, or Red Arrow.
Full access to the property 2 floors.
