Avalon Nook is located in the heart of the Brecon Beacons; a short walk gets you right into the hills. Arty & cosy with open fire, record player, LPs, telescope, Chromecast, books, games and pub round the corner. Owned by best-selling writer/forager.

The space

Fancy browsing from a vast range of books and settling down in a comfy, throne-like chair, in front of an open fire, to read for a while? Or perhaps you fancy sitting outside with a glass of wine or a chilled beer, enjoying views over acres of rolling hills, red kites circling lazily overhead? If so, Avalon Nook is the place for you. Technically speaking for AirBnB purposes an apartment, in reality, as a recent guest put it, Avalon Nook is an entire large house. Situated on two storeys, downstairs is a large, cosy room with an open fire, sofas, a TV and lots of books and games as well as a record player and a selection of vinyl for you to play with. There's also a conservatory with a drinks cooler and cooking facilities, and a door into the extensive - and very beautiful - gardens. Upstairs are 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with a king-size futon, and a bathroom with a deep bathtub (please note, not a shower!) and a quirky kitchen/diner, with a baby belling -style cooker and featuring an immaculate and original 1950s sink unit, next to the larger of the two bedrooms. In addition, there is a telescope available for the use of our guests. Being slightly away from the main village means that there's no light pollution here, and the night skies are truly breathtaking; it's for good reason that the Brecon Beacons National Park was recently made the first Dark Skies Reserve in the UK.

Guest access

The entire Nook is yours, as well as access to the wonderful gardens with views of the Brecon Beacons. In the summertime, you can sit under the maple tree and have breakfast. Avalon Nook is a walkers' paradise since the lane running past the house is the main route onto Pen y Fan and the glorious Cwm Oergham valley, a National Trust reserve as well as part of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Interaction with guests

We live next door, so if there is anything you need we can help. We also offer a pick-up service from the pub if you don't fancy the walk!
I also run a foraging school, running day courses and bespoke events and am happy to take out both groups and individuals. I offer a discount for guests to Avalon Nook.

Other things to note

We have two dogs, both very friendly border collies. It's likely that you may see them and that they will want to say hello! They are not allowed to access the Nook, though.
Also, we provide a selection of teas, coffee, juices, a pint of milk, a loaf of bread, butter and various (home made) jams etc for breakfast on your first day.

We have high speed broadband and Chromecast, which means you can stream TV programmes and films from your iPhone, iPad or laptop. It's very easy to use; all you need to do is download the app. We also have stacks of DVDs in the large Chinese cupboard for you to use as well as a record player with a selection of vinyl albums.

This is a wonderful and characterful place and adele is a great host. Although i didn't meet her she provided me with fresh veg from the garden and lots of information on walks in the area. Her home is filled with lots of interesting books and the location is superb with walks right on the doorstep and views across the hills. She was also flexible about check-in and check-out times which was really helpful. Things to be aware of - although it is in the description, the kitchenette set up just off the main bedroom upstairs is not ideal. And the bathroom lacks a proper shower - there is a plastic handheld shower-head that can be attached to the taps but again this is not great to use. Other than these two things its a great place to stay.

The house is so quiet that after a long day waking you will sleep very well. Plenty to see and do in the area plus Adele has a huge collection of books and even some of her LPs took me right back! A lovely stay and great host. Highly recommended.

I would recommend Adele's home for friends or families with young children. It is in a beautiful location and the stars at night are truly amazing. I can imagine it would also be really good for a family with kids due to the different boardgames, etc in the home. However my friends and I did think it was overpriced - ?maybe if there were more people it would be better value. There is a lot of communal space.. Also important things to note: 1)the kitchen does not have a proper oven as you can only cook certain meals in the oven that is available (which is fine just good to know in advance); 2)the shower is a hand held shower that requires you to sit in the bath to use (otherwise water goes everywhere); 3)I would say anyone with animal allergies could have a few issues (one of my friends is sensitive to animal hair and found home triggered her allergies). We didn't meet Adele until the day we left but she seemed friendly and relaxed (and also kindly gave my friend some vegetables!). Finally there was good communication before and during our stay.

Response from Adele:
Hi Alice Thanks for this - however there are a couple of things in your statement which are wrong which I I need to point, out for future guestsThe description clearly describes the kitchenette with the belling-style cooker. Many guests have cooked full Sunday lunch/ Christmas dinner using that same oven! Also, there is a nice deep bathtub with a connection for hair washing - it's not a shower! I'm glad you found Avalon Nook spacious with lots of communal space including the large garden.

We had such a fantastic time at Avalon Nook. Adele's recommended pubs were fantastic. The Royal Oak was perfect for a casual beer by the canal with a few bites, whilst the White Swan had delicious food in its cute little restaurant area. The garden was such a lovely space to read and meditate in. My mum was loving all your plants and vegetables, she could have stayed there forever! We had some fantastic hikes right from our doorstep. We even hiked to Pen-Y-Fan from there Thanks for having us!

Fabulous location for setting off on walks (one we did started right at the front door). The house is very quiet, with a beautiful outlook. We were also able to take advantage of the gorgeous garden one afternoon. The house is clean and very comfortable and Adele made the check-in very easy. The bathroom and primary kitchen are quite basic (but has pretty much everything you need). The only thing to note is that it is actually off one of the bedrooms, so whilst it was fine for us (4 friends), it may be a little awkward for 2 couples. Otherwise, highly recommend (& the pub up the road is great too!)

Response from Adele:
Hi Julia! The description does mention the unusual en-suite kitchen, which is why there are also cooking facilities etc available downstairs in the conservatory! The arrangement has been described as quirky and fun as well as memorable. Thanks so much for the booking!

I'm an author, professional forager and food writer. I run Brecon Beacons Foraging, which offers day courses and bespoke events, all to do with wild plants and fungi. I love books and music, and had a long career in the music industry before becoming a writer. I love real log fires inside, bonfires outside.... I love my garden too. I like places where the night sky is full of stars, unsullied by light pollution. I prefer to stay in places that are full of interesting stuff from around the world, places with a calm atmosphere but which allow the imagination to roam, and which appeal to all the senses. I don't like staying in a sterile box. I like to find lovely places that are off the beaten of my favourites is the Deetjens Big Sur Inn on the west coast of California; if you get the chance to go there, do! I love Avalon Nook and the landscape it's set in, and I want others to love it, too. Once you have the keys, and I've made sure you're happy, the place is yours, inside and out.
