We lived in the Barn when we were building our mud-brick house nearby. We have made many improvements on what was once a very basic rural shed and it is now a rustic but very comfortable and stylish space, a relaxed rural retreat, great for families.
Our property "Tianjara" is set in 25 acres of secluded rainforest, yet only a few minutes drive from glorious beaches. Smiths Lake is at the end of the road, and there are lakes, rivers and National Parks a short drive away. Our hand-crafted mud brick home is near the Barn but you are completely private and peaceful. You will hear no traffic, just the sounds of nature. We designed our place to to have minimal impact on the environment, without sacrificing comfort. So we are self-sufficient in electricity and water, and manage waste with dry composting toilets. The one on the Barn is OUTSIDE!
We keep chickens and roosters, we grow fruit and vegetables, and enjoy a quiet sustainable lifestyle.
The barn is the retro-fitted shed that we lived in while we built the house. We have made a lot of improvements, trying to include everything we can think of to make your stay a pleasant one. Set in its own surrounding yard, the space is all yours! You are fully self-contained in a simple, stylish comfortable place, where you can enjoy a taste of alternative country living, with everything you need, including toiletries. All linen is provided, the kitchen is simple but well-equipped. There is a fly-screened outdoor living room with a gas BBQ.
There is also an undercover area where you can store your surfboards, bicycles and beach toys,
You can enjoy walking around our property and visiting the chooks and horses. Some guests like to come at feeding time and help with the animals.
Interaction with guests
We take our cues from you! We are here if you need us, but will leave you alone if you prefer privacy. Judy works at the local Visitor Centre and has a lot of local knowledge. We have lived here for 17 years and know the area really well.
Other things to note
We don't have television, there is limited mobile coverage, and rather slow WiFi. This is your chance to get away from it all, maybe have a screen-free holiday! In spite of the lack of these modern amenities, children love it here.
This is a peaceful place and not set up for parties. We ask guests to keep the noise down after about 10 pm. Absolutely no smoking anywhere on the property. Please use the outdoor hot shower to wash off sand, and respect our 'no shoes inside' policy. Because of our free range chickens we are not able to accommodate dogs.
John Ling and Judy Donnelly, passionate environmentalists from the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales Australia. Judy is semi-retired but still does some catering work, John is a nurse in aged care. We live on a 25 acre property in the forest, near the beaches. We grow vegetables and keep hens, dogs and horses. We built our mud-brick solar-powered house ourselves. We don't smoke, John likes an occasional glass of white wine. We like bicycling, kayaking and bushwalking, but the property keeps us pretty busy. We don't have TV, we read a lot, enjoy listening to classical and world music. We are involved in lots of community groups, such as rural fire brigade and organic food co-ops.
