We lived in the Barn when we were building our mud-brick house nearby. We have made many improvements on what was once a very basic rural shed and it is now a rustic but very comfortable and stylish space, a relaxed rural retreat, great for families.

The space

Our property "Tianjara" is set in 25 acres of secluded rainforest, yet only a few minutes drive from glorious beaches. Smiths Lake is at the end of the road, and there are lakes, rivers and National Parks a short drive away. Our hand-crafted mud brick home is near the Barn but you are completely private and peaceful. You will hear no traffic, just the sounds of nature. We designed our place to to have minimal impact on the environment, without sacrificing comfort. So we are self-sufficient in electricity and water, and manage waste with dry composting toilets. The one on the Barn is OUTSIDE!
We keep chickens and roosters, we grow fruit and vegetables, and enjoy a quiet sustainable lifestyle.

Guest access

The barn is the retro-fitted shed that we lived in while we built the house. We have made a lot of improvements, trying to include everything we can think of to make your stay a pleasant one. Set in its own surrounding yard, the space is all yours! You are fully self-contained in a simple, stylish comfortable place, where you can enjoy a taste of alternative country living, with everything you need, including toiletries. All linen is provided, the kitchen is simple but well-equipped. There is a fly-screened outdoor living room with a gas BBQ.
There is also an undercover area where you can store your surfboards, bicycles and beach toys,
You can enjoy walking around our property and visiting the chooks and horses. Some guests like to come at feeding time and help with the animals.

Interaction with guests

We take our cues from you! We are here if you need us, but will leave you alone if you prefer privacy. Judy works at the local Visitor Centre and has a lot of local knowledge. We have lived here for 17 years and know the area really well.

Other things to note

We don't have television, there is limited mobile coverage, and rather slow WiFi. This is your chance to get away from it all, maybe have a screen-free holiday! In spite of the lack of these modern amenities, children love it here.

Judy and John are great hosts. The Barn is hidden in the bush, private and protected from the mosquitoes and other bugs by screening all around, including a lovely little screened courtyard area with BBQ. Our son enjoyed feeding the chickens and swimming and surfing at the nearby beaches. It is a great little retreat!

It was perfect holiday for us, relaxing, peaceful and quite what we all needed, good for little kids too, playing with horse, dogs and chooks. Good location to visit beaches and Smith lake. We sure will go back again. Thank Judy and John again for wonderful holiday accommodation and experience.

John and Judy were very nice hosts and made our little family feel welcome. It was great to take our 2 year old son through the chicken hutch to feed them and past the horse stable each day. The surroundings of magnificent tall (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN)s really made us feel like we'd got away from the hustle and bustle of Sydney. The barn had a nice fireplace that we used each night and the mosquito-proof outdoor area was excellent for reading and hanging out. Thanks again John and Judy and thanks for showing us through the mud brick house, it was quite inspiring.

The Barn Eco Cabin is exactly what is described on AirBnb - quiet getaway perfect for young families and couples looking for a private retreat from the hustle and bustle. We had all our meals in the outdoor screened area and it was serene and peaceful. It was truly an experience living in the middle of a rainforest! Beaches were 10 minutes away and beautiful (we saw dolphins on two occasions!) and the supermarkets were 30 minutes away in town for anything you need (or didn't bring). Judy and John are great hosts and Judy was very responsive to all my questions about the place before and during the stay. It is a beautiful property and it is very safe. It is not for everyone as there is no wifi or air con or a flushable toilet (and beware of the bugs and mosquitoes - but bug/ insect repellant sprays and coils are provided). We enjoyed the getaway very much. Thanks John and Judy!

This is located perfectly between Seal Rocks and the other beaches further up north on The Lakes Way. Judy is a great host and very knowledgeable on the areas and it's surrounds. We can't wait to come back.

Judy User ProfileJudy is a superhost.

John Ling and Judy Donnelly, passionate environmentalists from the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales Australia. Judy is semi-retired but still does some catering work, John is a nurse in aged care. We live on a 25 acre property in the forest, near the beaches. We grow vegetables and keep hens, dogs and horses. We built our mud-brick solar-powered house ourselves. We don't smoke, John likes an occasional glass of white wine. We like bicycling, kayaking and bushwalking, but the property keeps us pretty busy. We don't have TV, we read a lot, enjoy listening to classical and world music. We are involved in lots of community groups, such as rural fire brigade and organic food co-ops.
