Carol's Cottage is a true gem. We spent a long weekend there with another couple and the home was wonderful. Lovely setting, well-furnished, comfortable beds, well-provisioned kitchen, and helpful hosts. Cottage exactly as depicted in photos. This will be our go-to place for future visits.

Hotels can be crowded and noisy and we were looking for a quiet place where our VMI "rat" could relax and recharge for a few hours while on afternoon/evening pass. Carol's Cottage not only provided a clean, quiet and extremely comfortable respite for our cadet, but it had beautiful pastoral views from just about every window! Check in and check out could not have been easier or quicker. We did not see our hosts all weekend, other than to check in, but they were very quick to respond to any questions we had for them. We could not have picked a better place! Our "rat" said it felt like "home" and we thank you Carol and Bernard! We will definitely be back to visit your beautiful cottage again! We really enjoyed using the gas grill to cookout both evenings. It was a nice reminder of home for our cadet.

This was a very strange experience. The house had a strong mold odor when we walked in, which was off-putting. The house itself is cute. There is a lot of personal clutter around and it isn't dirty, just kind of dingy. The first floor bathroom is really nice, but the bed is as hard as the floor. The 2nd floor bathroom is a little yucky, with mold around the tub. My daughter saw bugs in the kitchen. The weird part was the monitoring of our stay. We were at a horse show nearby and had lots of my daughter's friends come by to visit. We were actually rarely at the house because we were at the horse show until very late each night. We were asked during the trip "how many guests" were staying with us. I didn't realize it, but my daughter broke a drinking glass and again we were asked about a broken glass during our stay, which made me feel creepy. The last night, my husband had to rescue 2 of my daughter's riding friends (15 & 16 years old) from Rt 81 at midnight because their car broke down. He brought them back to the house to sleep (they were there 8 hours). I was e-mailed after the trip that we would be changed an extra $100 because all of the beds were slept in and they have a 2 person limit (on a 3 bedroom house!). Seriously, weird. I have stayed at a lot of Airbnbs and this is the only bad trip we have had. I would recommend a hotel instead of this house.

Response from Bernard And Carol:
Airbnb is based on a culture of trust between the Guest and the Host. That trust was breached during this stay. Part of the trust rests with the “House Rules” that are a part of all of the listings on this site. Our rules include notification of any breakage that occurs during a stay and the accurate count of Guests which stay over the duration of the reservation. This Guest did not notify Bernie and I of the broken Kentucky Derby/Preakness glass until we asked about it. The glass was in the outside trash bin. Bernie noticed the broken glass when he grabbed the bag. When we went into the Cottage after this Guest left, there was shattered glass on the floor in the kitchen/laundry room area. This reservation for two Guests. The Cottage sleeps up to six and as the listing clearly states, there is a surcharge for additional Guests after the first two. The Guest did, in fact, let us know that there would be one additional Guest, making three. As we live next door, we noticed that there were not just three persons staying at the Cottage. We also noticed when we went into the Cottage after the Guests left that all of the beds had been slept in.When I asked about this, the Guest was extremely offended. There were additional Guests and we were not notified. The Cottage does not smell of mold or is it full of mold or bugs. The a/c was not on yet when the Guests arrived and the house was stuffy. Our weather has been fluctuating greatly and it has not always been necessary to keep the a/c running constantly. The bathroom tiles in the upstairs bathroom are white and are grouted white. They discolor with use no matter what kind of cleaners you use. We live in farm country and do have the occasional bug in the Cottage. We do not treat with chemicals as we try to stay as organic as possible. The mattress and box springs in the first floor bedroom are only one month old. We chose to purchase a firm set as that appears to be what most Guests want, especially if they have back problems. The Cottage is a private property that Bernie and I, along with the Guesthouse next door, take great pride in. It is decorated with personal items that we have collected through the years. We have enjoyed sharing these items with our Guests and they in turn have let us know that they enjoyed the homey, cozy environment that it affords. We would not consider it dingy. If any Guests, future or considering a stay, have any questions regarding this review, please feel free to contact us. We also suggest that you, of course, read through the other reviews on this site including Jennifer's from May, 2016. If you are in the area and the Cottage/Guesthouse is not rented, you are welcome to come meet us and check out our properties for yourselves. Our wish is for our Guests to have a comfortable, peaceful and happy stay with us. Jennifer, Bernie and I wish you and yours the best in the future. Carol and Bernie Shaw

The cottage was charming and spotless. The beds were extremely comfortable and the location was perfect for the horse show. I had to reach out to Carol and Bernard before I got there and they got back to me super quick and were extremely accommodating. The whole experience far exceeded our expectations and we hope to do it again next year!

We enjoyed our weekend stay at Carol and Bernie's cottage. The location was right around the corner from the hotel where our families and other wedding guests were staying, so it was the perfect location for us. About 8-10 min. drive from downtown Lexington, and a really gorgeous view from the front porch. The house was quaint and comfortable. Dropping a star due to a request for ~$50 in taxes about a month after booking--haven't ever been asked for extra money after booking/payment, and it was an unwelcome surprise. Otherwise, it was a nice alternative to Lexington hotels.
