The space

The unit is around 140 square metres (1500 sq. feet), with two bedrooms, but we have our bedroom locked, so, effectively the flat will sleep two in the other bedroom. It's in an old heritage building that was constructed in 1936, and fortunately survived the ravages of WW2, when the Americans bombed Manila heavily in an effort to wipe out the Japanese army, the generals of which were actually holed up in this very building. Hence, the feel as you enter is as if you walked into a time warp back to the 1940s. The apartment itself is simply decorated, light and airy, with 10 foot ceilings (as was typical of the era). There is an outdoor balcony by the fire escape that smokers can use.

Please check the following article about our unit. Spot.ph (Urban lifestyle guide) choose our apartment as one of the 5 beautiful airbnbs in Manila.

Guest access

The security guard in the front of the building will let you in.

Interaction with guests

We are away most of the time, but our house helper Sharon is around to look after you and take care of your requests, laundry, breakfast, etc. Her English is not perfect but there should be no communication problems. And if for whatever reason Sharon cannot handle it, we are a quick email away.

Other things to note

The neighbours are a friendly bunch of literate, somewhat eccentric characters from all walks of life: artists, designers, entrepreneurs, movie people, restaurateurs and so on. It's a mixed group of Europeans, North Americans and locals. The community is close and everyone knows each other, often having dinner at each other's units. They are helpful if you need tips or suggestions on Manila.

This is not an Airbnb, it's much much more. You are entrusted with a beautiful historical apartment with a wonderful housekeeper. Malate has a boho, edgy feel but is in fact entirely safe. Make sure you walk along the seafront at sunset and try the street food. Honestly this is near the top of my Airbnb favourites of all time.

We enjoyed our stay. It was a home away from home. Beautifully arranged, well ventilated, spacious , we absolutely love the kitchen because it was spacious and it had everything we required. Plus a high speed internet connection and a perks of having someone provided by the host to maintain the cleanliness and to cater to our needs. I would highly recommend this place . We had superb stay. Thanks miss claudia.

This place sets the bar very, very high for other AirBNB rentals. Beautiful apartment that you will repeatedly photograph to send photos back to your friends and they will think you are sending them photos from a decorating magazine. The place is clean, comfortable and beautiful. The staff in the building is super-nice and helpful. I was made to feel very secure at all hours of the day. Definitely enquire about massage therapist because a nice massage is what you'll need after a long day exploring Manila. The location of this rental is definitely "gritty" so you'll be able to experience real Manila street life with the food and personalities to match. Take a left out the front door and walk until you get to The Hobbit Hole and stop in for a "short" time or take a right and walk a couple blocks until you see the alley of food vendors on the left and stop in for some cheap and tasty eats. This was definitely one of my best AirBNB stays and I have had some really good ones. Thanks Claudia and thanks AirBNB.

Karen and I had a wonderful stay! The property was clean, well-cared for, and spaciously cozy. Sharon was accommodating after we arrived somewhat late after traveling from the province. Definitely recommended!

Staying at Claudia's for the 2nd time and it was just as perfect as ever. Sharon (her housekeeper) keeps the place impeccably clean and she is very nice and easy to talk to. Sharon's place is probably one of the best apartments in the whole city and will make you the envy of your frends.

I'm originally from Bogota, Colombia but I reside in the Philippines and in British Columbia, Canada. I'm self employed, being the owner of a Colombian jewellery shop, Calima Jewellery.
I enjoy traveling with my husband to various areas around the world. My real passion is to be in contact with nature, specifically mountain areas and forests (hence the interest in Canada).
I practice meditation, Kundalini yoga, am a certified reiki healer and I also practice karma quotient healing. I am nearly vegetarian, and very rarely eat fish or meat.
