A charmingly renovated & decorated farm-house on two floors... the living on the main and the sleeping on the top... situated in a Medieval village. A large courtyard and terraced garden separates the house from its neighbors and for privacy.

The space

La Casa Padronale del Poggiolo... Il Poggiolo is the old name of the farm... is an 800 year old farm-house situated in the Medieval village of Codiponte in the northwest corner of Tuscany called the Lunigiana. Originally, the house had the living quarters on the top floor and the barns, animal stalls and rooms for making & storing wine on the ground floor. At some point its history, the facade & ground floor were altered to eventually become the Master's House... or, Casa Padronale. Instead, another house, attached to Il Poggiolo, was built in the Medici-style in the late 1600s as the Master's House, leaving La Casa Padronale as it was until a complete renovation was undertaken in 2009. Today, the house still maintains the original separation of top & ground floors but, is now, finally, a "Casa Padronale"...

The ground floor is living quarters of the house with a Loggia & Entrance Door off the Courtyard, a large high-ceiling Living Room with two single beds-sofas, a high-ceiling Dining Room, a complete Kitchen plus a Laundry Room & Bath below that.

The top floor has the sleeping quarters... named L'Appartamento Azzurro because of its soft-blue wall color... and its own separate entrance reached by a ramp leading from the Courtyard. L'Appartamento Azzurro has a living/dining area with a basic service kitchen and an enclosed fireplace. Above is a sleeping loft with two single-beds reached by a ladder. Off a short corridor are the Master Bedroom with an antique double-bed and the bathroom. Outside the bedroom is a terrace with lovely views of the village and the hills beyond covered with chestnut & olive groves.

The entire Casa Padronale is decorated with an eclectic mix of period antiques, flee-market finds and the new, from the furniture, the furnishings to the artwork.

Outside is a 2,000 square meter garden of grassy terraces full of fruit trees, crepe myrtle and flowering bushes. There is even a fish pond!

La Casa Padronale is a sophisticated, yet intimate & relaxing retreat in one of the most scenic areas of the Italian peninsula. Come & enjoy it!

Guest access

There is parking at the Medieval bridge before crossing to the village and Il Poggiolo. If full, then there is an area below.

The central Courtyard is available to the guests of La Casa Padronale. There are tables & chairs stored in the out-building.

The area of the Garden to the east of the house and reached through the stall along the under-passage and the door to the outside. Above the fish pond is an ample area both shady & sunny to enjoy.

The village has two small convenience stores for basic food & cleaning items. One is Alimentari Anna. The other is at the bar... the social center of the village... on the main road. There are also a green grocer and an excellent butcher at the corner of the main road and the road to the Medieval Bridge.

There are additional food stores and other shops in the towns above & below Codiponte and in Aulla at the exit-entrance to the autostrada.

Interaction with guests

I am the Guardian Angel. I am quite well-known in the area, which is a great boon to guests to be recommended by "Forrest" or, more often, by the "American". I know the area & Italy very well... I've been living here for nearly 30 years!!!... and it is a pleasure for me to share what I know. Guests can count on me!

What a perfect break at La Casa Padronale del Poggiolo in Codiponte! Forrest went out of his way to make us feel welcome, and make sure we made use of us unique home. It really is difficult to describe the property. Newly renovated, historic farm house, stunning gardens, picturesque location, large, comfortable space on two levels. Rent a car. Forrest will get you to your destination safely. Drive to La Spezia, Pisa, Carrara. See Cinque Terre, and castles in the clouds. The only problem we had was that we didn't stay long enough!
