enjoy santa monica's temperate climate in a unique, solar-powered urban hideaway. this open-plan guest house, behind a single family house, is surrounded by garden, a treehouse and is a 20-minute walk to the beach, the pier or downtown santa monica.
please note: though listed as a private room, this actually an entire guest house behind a single family dwelling.
with two skylights, five functional windows and two doors with clear panels, the loft house is very light and airy. for space efficiency, the kitchen and bathroom share the same space (that can be separated by a curtain). however, the house doesn't feel cramped because the french doors open onto the garden, which can serve as an extra room. both houses on the property are solar powered.
it should be pointed out, again, that the kitchen and bathroom share the same space underneath the sleeping loft, at the end of a short hall. the space is separate from the open space in the loft house and the toilet is tucked out of the way, but is part of the kitchen space. if privacy is a concern, it can be kept private by either pulling a curtain across to separate the space or by programming the use of the kitchen.
guests have access to the back house and back garden and treehouse, and occasionally, our six year-old son does like to play in the treehouse.
we have permit parking on our street and a permit is provided if you need one. normally there is sufficient parking on the street. street cleaning days are wednesday and thursday- please be aware of that when you park and check the signs.
access to the back house is through the front yard and alongside the front house.
Interaction with guests
my family and i live in the front house, on the same property, and interact only when needed. we're available for any help should our guests need it, but otherwise don't intrude. i prefer you feel as if you live here during your stay, but i'm available for any questions and happy to give any advice for eating, shopping or sites to visit
Other things to note
as of november 1, 2015, airbnb will charge and collect 14% hotel tax for the city of santa monica. i hold santa monica business license #215247 reservations made prior to this date are not affected.
the house has two doors, five windows and an upstairs door to a small deck. on the rare occasion that the house gets hot, opening the windows and/or doors should cool down the house. if that doesn't help, open the deck door upstairs and the house will cool down very quickly.
there is a heater, fan and a vacuum cleaner in the downstairs closet, as well as the bedding for the pull out sofa bed.
when using the sofa bed, there is a latch at the base of the sofa to release the bed. there is a storage area under the cushions with mats to cover the cushions and make the bed level and more comfy.
please take your shoes off inside the house.
outside the back gate is the city trash (black), compost (green) and recycling (blue) bins. we try to recycle as much as possible and hope you will, too!
you're welcome to use the barbecue - please let the coals cool (and put outside in the green bin) and clean after use.
having some friends over is ok for a casual visit (no parties), but please let us know beforehand how many people would be coming. extra parking isn't provided, so they would need to find metered parking nearby, unless it's after 6:00 pm.
though we live near a busy street, this is a residential neighborhood. therefore, please respect the neighbors, re. noise, in the evenings.
please check beforehand about your pets. there is an extra charge for pets due to cleaning hair.
PLEASE do not smoke in the house. the very back yard is ok, but please clean up your cigarette butts, at all times. any evidence of smoking inside the house will cause your deposit to be used for cleaning the smoke smell, in addition to the cleaning fee.
