Room in a home

Your own room in a home, plus access to shared spaces.
eco-lodge, 50metres distance to the sea, beautiful vistas, very tranquil and different. kakas, tuis, bellbirds and fantails around, november till january
the little blue penguins nest under the house and wild kiwis pass through the property or can be encountered on the walk to the nearby lighthouse.

The space
Our place is not in the Oban village, but ca.2.5km from the village center.
We have one airbnb room, but also an additional superior guestroom,
i.e. more spacious, more private, more luxurious, more amenities like tv and hifi.

Guest access
We don't serve breakfast in our house anymore, but provide guests with a shuttle to the village to the old butcher shop cafe where breakfast is served from 8am onwards. Continental breakfast, i.e. tea or coffee, toast with butter and jam is included, a la carte breakfast like poached eggs, waffles, etc. is to be paid extra in cafe.
in event of an early departure for the morning ferry to Bluff, there is tea&coffee, toast, etc. on the kitchen-counter.
as we are numerous times backwards and forwards between house and village, we try to give our guests any ride.
we have sometimes our sauna running and on request of our guests we make the sauna available to them.

During your stay
We welcome any opportunity to share our experiences and tips for Stewart Island with our guests and depending on fitness and interest we take them to non tourist sights. But we also expect some contributions towards costs to get to those sights if by watertaxi or plane.
Our favorites are the Old Neck and Earnest Island on the south of Mason's Bay. We can also make reservations for guided walks to ULVA,
the bird sanctuary, or the KIWI-spotting trip to Ocean beach.

Other things to note
We don't run our place primarily as a commercial enterprise, but as a sharing of an experience to dive into the atmosphere, the island time,
the beauty of nature and the magic of this place.
Don't expect a 24 hours pampered luxurious stay where every wish is being taken care of, but come with an open heart and mind to experience the best of Stewart Island and you will not be disappointed!
- a sumptuous breakfast can be arranged either at the house from 8am onwards or at our cafe 'the old butcher shop cafe' in Oban a la cart for extra costs.

Where you’ll be

Stewart Island, Southland, New Zealand

To our right:
the very intimate and beautiful walk to the lighthouse, i.e. Acker's point, starts, taking you passed Harrold's Bay with its historic stonehouse;
most of our guests encounter at night kiwis in the wild on this walk
to your left:
you go for ca. five minutes to Leask Bay with its boatsheds and historic remains of the whaling times. On top of Leask Bay you can either walk right along the shore to the village or you turn left and go to RingaRinga
beach and the golf course.

Lives in Stewart Island, New Zealand
I'm studying at Otago University and come to the island in my semester breaks and on some weekends. My husband Manfred takes care of the house when I'm not there. He enjoys cooking, walking and doing art. In respect to the house he is usually helped by part-time employees and/or woofers. We do rent out one or two rooms to get some income towards the costs of running the house, but also as especially Manfred enjoys like-minded company and is very enthusiastic about our place and Stewart Island. Anybody staying with us should know that Manfred and I like to provide much more than just a bed and breakfast, but tuning into the island's time, its natural beauty and ever present history. We have been on the island for over 25 years now, but our origin from Germany and the way, we do things, and our never ending amazement and gratitude to have found this place is very obvious and - as we have found out: not everybody's cup of tea. If you choose our place for your stay: you best enjoy it with an open mind and heart!
