Places to stay in Benito Juárez

Places to stay in Benito Juárez
Country house with beautiful view in Oaxaca´s Sierra Norte hosted by a lovely Zapoteca family that cooks amazing traditional food for a small price in their family run comedor "Casa de Piedra" which is right next to the house that they rent out. Many hiking options start right from the house. The family is very helpful, the house has two bedrooms, a hot shower bathroom, kitchen and a beautiful balcony.
We warmly welcome you to our beautiful house in the hills of Benito Juarez! The ca. 60 m2 house has a spacious kitchen area with a wooden table, six wooden chairs and more seating options. You can cook your own food on a gas oven and enjoy a stunning view on green bloomy fields and the mountains of the Sierra Norte in Mexico. The kitchen is fully equipped for at least six persons. Plates, cutlery, cups and a pot are stored in the kitchen wardrobe. The great, unique terrace of the house is directly located in the woods and invites for quiet moments of reading books after an exciting hiking trip. Two cosy bedrooms with double beds offer space for four people to sleep. However there are three more mattresses stored in the open upper floor. Either you can sleep upstairs under the roof or you can add mattresses in the two main bedrooms. Each of the bedrooms is equipped with wardrobes for your clothes. For entertainment you will find some family games. In the bathroom is a shower with gas heated hot water and also a water toilet. About us, your tenants and your neighbors: We are a three generation Zapoteca family consisting of two grandparents, José, Maylet, four children and a friendly dog. The two older boys go to school in Oaxaca. So most of the time we are six people living here. We unfortunately speak very little English. This text has been written by our international volunteers, who stay with us from time to time. Please excuse, if we use an online translation program to answer your request. Apart from carpentering and farming, we run our small “comedor”/ restaurant “Casa de Piedra” directly in our house. Here we cook traditional regional food from scratch. The corn from the tortillas grows in our fields, some of the vegetables are picked in our or our neighbor´s garden. You are always welcome to eat with us, just let us know, so that we can prepare you a fresh meal suitable to your taste. We mostly offer vegetarian dishes.
The apartment is located next to our family run “comedor”/ small restaurant “Casa de Piedra”. You are always welcome to eat with us, just let us know, so that we can prepare you a fresh meal suitable to your taste. We offer mostly vegetarian dishes. Our land belongs to the emerging eco tourism center Benito Juarez. A harmonic, partly independent, farmer town with ca. 500 inhabitants. The village is located in the hills of Oaxaca´s scenic Sierra Norte at an altitude of 2700 meter. The closest shopping option is located 5-10 minutes walking distance from the house and is located in the center of Benito Juarez. You will find three small grocery shops where you can buy snacks, food, fresh vegetables, fruits, drinks and hygiene products. Furthermore there are two more restaurants in town. The main attraction you can experience here is the stunning landscape of the Sierra Norte. From the house it is only a half an hour walk to the 3100 meter high located view point “el mirador”. There you can walk over the hanging bridge or enjoy the zipline ride from rock to rock. Important for you to know is, that every visitor in Benito Juarez is asked by the tourist center to support the village with a fee of $60 Pesos for your entire stay. The tourist center organizes horse rides for $200 Pesos including a guide for 2-3 hours and you can rent mountain bikes. With the fee that you have paid you can trek to six different villages in our district. We are happy to explain you the way. Other sights in the area are a waterfall and the "big rock".
  • Our stay in Benito Juárez was amazing! The family of José is very welcoming and although our Spanish was not the best they really went out of their way to explain everything to us! The cabin was nice and the food super delicious :)

  • We greatly enjoyed our stay in Benito Juárez at Jose’s cabin. The cabin was even better than pictured with very comfortable beds and lots of warm blankets. The shower was hot and the kitchen was adequately equipped for us to Prepare most of our meals. Jose’s family can also prepare meals for you at a very reasonable price. There are a couple of small markets in the village or you might want to pick up groceries before you arrive. We took two wonderful hikes and highly recommend the guide Lulu. Jose and his family couldn’t have been nicer. They were gracious warm and helpful. Jose was an excellent communicator. They don’t speak much English, But fortunately our Spanish was adequate. We visited in February and it was a bit chilly at night so I’ll be sure to bring some extra layers though there were plenty of warm blankets for the beds at night. We had an amazing experience and Benito Juarez it is a gorgeous town and Jose’s cabin Was wonderful.

  • Such a lovely place to visit. It's beautiful, comfortable and the hosts make amazing food from scratch if you choose to eat some meals at the house - which I highly recommend. Being able to speak Spanish is recommended, but not necessary. The more fluent you are the more you will get out of the experience. And there are portable electric heaters, but no central heating system - my wife and I were there in February and it was cold but we were prepared with warm clothes and had a great time.

    Evan2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Jose's place is beautyful and well equiped. We had a lovely time! It can get extremly cold but there are plenty of blankets to keep you warm!

  • I really liked the closeness there is with nature! It is an excellent option to clear and relax. The host is very attentive

  • We had a blast, a great place, an amazing family, the food is homemade and part of it is grown my the family. We had a really good experience !

  • José's cabin is wonderful, the views amazing and the food delicious. I would return with pleasure!

    Andre2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent cabin in the gorgeous mountains! Jose and his family are so welcoming, knowledgable and fun to talk to. We learned a lot about the area from them. You can arrange for any/all meals at the comedor (it's all delicious, but don't skip on the hot chocolate) for an extra cost, which is very cozy & convenient. We came with our own car and found the place very easily -- ask Jose for instructions since AirBnB has the pin in the wrong spot. We enjoyed 2 days of hiking & horseback riding in the area. I highly recommend the Coyote Canyon hike from Cuajimoloyas (our guide Guillé was amazing!) and horsebackriding from the Benito Juarez centro.

  • Quite rustic and a great break from the city.

  • This is a magical little space. Rustic, private, and beautiful.

  • If you are a nature loving hippie like me, stop your search now and just book Bambú already. This cosy and eco friendly bungalow will not disappoint. It is located in a perfectly breezy garden that is yours to relax in. You will be showering with collected and cleaned rainwater and are provided with a large jug of fresh water to cook with and drink from so you don't have to purchase wasteful single use bottles. Manuel and Yanet are genuinely kind people and I felt so looked after by them. They helped me so much with getting around town, giving recommendations, helping me to find an amazing hike and sharing vegetables from their garden. They also gave me a private dying and weaving class (for an extra cost of course) and in the end I decided to order a custom tapete from Manuel. He is a truly talented artist. They also introduced me to some family members and friends and their sweet dog, Afrika, who lives on the premises who will protect you and give you cuddles. There's no wifi so get ready to unplug and enjoy nature or walk 2 blocks to the nearest cafe to connect.

    Jackie2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing plot of land, where they grow all their own veg. The dog was lovely. We really enjoyed our 4 days, and managed to cook for ourselves every night in the basic kitchen. Manuel and Janet were very hospitable. Thanks

    G2020-01-23T00:00:00Z
  • Tis is a magical place. In the middle of nature yet not far from the pueblo. Manuel and his family where wonderful. They wanted to show the true village culture and showed us how they color the wool Nd invited us to a wedding. The only minus was that the kitchen doesn't have many materials to cook with. Other than that superb. Muchas gracias Manuel & familia

  • Amazing place and welcome from the hosts

    Josué2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • The farm in Teotitlan is amazing. With the backdrop of the mountains, this quaint and quiet space is full of color and warmth. There is an organic garden full of vegetables, herbs and flowers, fruit trees, succulents galore, beautiful plants and a pond. We had a great time and are grateful to Manuel's family for all of their help and hospitality. We would love to go back. My favorite part was the farm dog, Africa, who took long walks with us through town and hiking and kept us feeling looked after.

    Krissi2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Manuel's space is very beautiful. The place is five minutes from the handicraft market and downtown. Manuel and Yanet were excellent hosts and allowed us to get to know Teotitlán in a very intimate way. I highly recommend this accommodation.

  • Andrea is a great host and her place is an excellent value. Great location in a wonderful town. The room is spacious, although a bit sparse, the bed very comfortable, and a great hot shower. Recommend this place for travelers passing through.

  • The cábaña in Benito Juarez was lovely. We enjoyed our stay. It was a bit cold, but once they made a fire in the fireplace, it was much better. I would only suggest, that on the cold night, they should make the fire before 8 pm - it would be a wee bit more comfortable

Immerse yourself in the traditional Zapotec way of life. Join our workshops: rug weaving, natural dyes, Temazcal (sauna), cooking or learning our native Zapotec language. Explore the countryside and surrounding landscape on horseback riding or hiking. You'll stay in the shrine room with an altar, flowers, family portraits and decorations. Join us for the numerous festivals and authentic traditions all year round in our village!
OUR HOME: A family of four: Mario is my Dad, my mom is Leonor, and Celestino also has access to manage this account when I am traveling to showcase our rugs abroad. Our house is only 3 small blocks from the center of town. There is a Farmers Market every morning 8:30 to 11:00am which is a great place to get a traditional Zapotec breakfast. Get your favorite freshly made juice, buy some tamales made with native corn and local herbs, tamal de mole negro or tamal amarillo en hoja de milpa. There are several food stands where you can byu food to go or sit there and enjoy breakfast in the market. There are several restaurants and places to eat. From award winning restaurants where famous chefs have come to learn about Prehispanic foods to a small front shop restaurants run families. (Read more at the bottom). You'll be staying in our newest rooms specially conditioned to host airbnb guest. The room has large windows, ceiling fan and mosquito screens. We also put a nice hammock in there. We have a big house with a large patio where we keep some livestock (goats, sheep, horses, cows and free range chickens) you are welcome to help feeding them ;-) we are just happy to share our culture and meet people from all over the world, you'll get a chance to live the Zapotec culture, enjoy listening to our native language, going shopping to the local farmers market and joining many of the village festivals and traditions. Zapotec architecture is centered around the household activities, the house is huge and spread around a central patio. There is a separate room for everyone. You are welcome to use the kitchen, we will make a hot drink and offer sweet bread for breakfast. The bathroom (for some) is inconveniently located at the back of the house (blue room) so expect to walk around the patio a lot (good exercise). THINGS TO DO: As part of your stay we will show you how we make our rugs; we grind some cochineal to show you how we get different colours from the bugs, my mom is very good at spinning wool and very patient if you would like to try it, we even teach you the very basics of weaving on the looms if you are up for it. In one of the rooms we have a large gallery with a varied collection of rugs, bags, textiles and other small crafts that my family makes. Feel free to take as much time as you like to do your shopping while you stay with us ;-) You are welcome to join us at parties or festivals in the village if there are any during your stay. My aunts run a shop in front of the local market and every morning ladies meet for shots of Mezcal and other spirits before going to the market for grocery shopping; you are welcome to join in and learn about the many varieties of Mezcal and the way in which it can be drank for fun, healing or spiritual purposes. HIKING: There is a trail that goes to the sacred peak in front of my house (picacho) this is where legend has it that our ancestors first arrived to. The great spirit manifested itself in the great sky in the form of a huge beautiful bird accompanied by the seven pleyades. At the top of this mountain, the great spirit gave all the land that the eye could see to the Zapotec people for them to care and live. This why private property was and it is still not entirely part of the view of life in Zapotec communities. We recommend doing this hike early in the morning or in the afternoon, it takes 1 hour to reach the top on a steady phase. WORKSHOPS: Workshops are not included in the airbnb price, this are sold separately. We run them everyday when we have guests. NATURAL DYES. Learn how to dye using cochineal (Dactylopius Coccus) a bug that growns on nopal cacti and that changed the way Europeans saw color and did business in the 16th century. We would also dye with another local and seasonal plant to explain how to achieve color variation and fix the dye. All materials are provided and you get a skein of yarn of every color died. The workshop lasts around 4 hours and the next day we take out the died yarn. It costs 1,000 pesos per person. WEAVING. You get access to a warped loom and materials to weave your very own rug with our coaching. You get 6 hours of coaching per day and all the materials and tools you need to weave. Depending on your weaving skills and the pattern you would like to learn you can make a simple pattern rug in a day or a more detailed pattern in 3 days. The cost is $1200 pesos per day. $2000 pesos for two days or 2,800 pesos for three days. Message us for longer and more advanced weaving classes so we can discuss the details and make the arrangements. COOKING. Let us know if you would like to cook a prehispanic Zapotec dish with us. Cook mole from scratch, learn how to make hand made tortillas, sopa de guias (tender squash leaves soup), segueza (prehispanic mole), atole or champurrado. We will discuss the recipes according to the season and dietary requirements. The cost is 1000 pesos, all inclusive (ingredients and teaching). HORSEBACK RIDING. My brother Celestino could arrange horse riding sessions for one or more people to explore the country side, ride on the foothills, enjoy the landscape of agave fields or stop at the local damn where migratory birds arrive. You can tailor your ride according to your interest. 1 to 2 hours ride: $600 pesos per person. 2 to 4 hours ride: $1,000 pesos per person 4 to 6 hours ride: $2,000 pesos per person TEMAZCAL. We can also arrange the traditional Zapotec Temazcal with an experienced lady healer; she has been healing people for over 20 years and is well renowned in the area. The temazcal is a small adobe room which is layered with healing herbs and then steamed from the hot rocks on the fire pit. You entern the temazcal naked (optional) and lay down on the floor. The healer will use a bouquet of herbs and plants to bring the steam on your body, then you will start to get hot and to sweat. You tell her to stop any time and take a break inside or outside of the temazcal. You can go in and out as many times as it pleases you during the session. The idea is that when you crawl out of the Temazcal you are being born again, this time from the womb of mother earth. The family prepares a hot drink made with toasted corn kernels for you to drink after the experience. The temazcal session lasts up to two hours and it costs $350 pesos per person, payable up front. Check availability in advance. We accept credit cards for all your purchases during your stay. There are no ATMs in the village, the nearest one is 20 minutes drive away in Tlacolula or el Tule. Where to eat: If you go out of my house and walk two blocks you get to Av. Juarez where most of the restaurants are. Turn right and you will find Restaurant Guelaguetza, a medium sized family owned restaurant offering local dishes at affordable prices. Two blocks down on Av Juarez is Restaurant El Descanso, very clean and beautifully decorated, the food is tasty and the price range is medium. Once and a half blocks from el Descanso is Restaurant Tlamanalli, run by Abigail Mendoza and her sisters. Abigail has been traveling the world to promote Zapotec food and has hosted famous Chefs like Anthony Burdain, Tomasina Miers and Alejandro Ruiz. The food is well made respecting the traditional Zapotec tradition with no short cuts; abigail uses the Metate to grind all her ingredients. A three course meal with drinks would cost around $1000 pesos, no credit cards are accepted. El Jaguar is a nice and small restaurant down the road from Tlamanalli, it is run by my Cousing Isabel. Just like every other woman in town, she cooks very tasty traditional Zapotec food at affordable prices using local ingredients and ancient recipes. Right next door to Jaguar is Conchita, a small Comedor that serves typical Mexican "street food" and local dishes, she opens until late 10:00pm. Restaurant Tierra Antigua is another well decorated and nice restaurant of the medium scale serving Authentic and delicious Zapotec food at the entrance of town on Av Juarez. Teotitlan del Valle is internationally known for its weavings. There are festivals and celebratiosn all year round and in addition to that we have a beautiful countryside and surrounding mountains. There are three Mezcal factories at the entrance of the Village. From Fancy expensive to authentic less expensive. There is poor mobile coverage in the village, but we have wifi. COFEE HOUSES AND RESTAURANTS: On Avenida Juárez there are all sorts of coffee places and restaurants. Cafe Drupa´s: good coffee! El descanso: clean, tidy, not too expensive. Tlamanally: internationally famous and well renowned Abigail Mendoza and her sisters cook the same food that everyone else cooks in Teotitlán but presenting it in a nice atmosphere and setting. Expensive (around 1000 pesos for a full course meal per person). Dulizuún: good food and coffee, not too expensive. El Jaguar: authentic Zapotec food cooked by my cousin in her family home. Nice and not expensive at all. Conchita: typical and tasty Mexican food, not expensive at all. Tierra antigua: nice setting, good food and not too expensive.
  • A wonderful stay in the countryside. The Bautista Laszos are such warm and welcoming people. I was able to make a beautiful little rug under mama Leonara, papa Mario and little brother Celestino's attentive tutelage.

  • I had a lovely two day stay at Samuel's place, which turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip. Although Samuel wasn't in town while I was there, he was easy to get in touch with when I had questions, and his family made me feel welcome as soon as I arrived -- Leonor, Mario, and Celestino were wonderful hosts throughout my stay. I loved spending time at their beautiful farm and the surrounding area. I even had the opportunity to go out to the fields with Celestino to check on the cows and horses. Overall a great experience and I highly recommend if you are looking to get away for a little bit.

  • The house is amazing, we really had a great time with the family. The only bad thing is the location, to go to a store you need a car. Beyond that, everything is really cool.

A spacious minimalistic apartment that offers a large en suite bathroom with large shower and bath tub; there is also a kitchen area with fridge, oven, and kitchen essentials. The apartment also has a small balcony, king size bed and living and dining areas. The apartment sleeps two people. Downstairs there is sleeping for a further 9 people with a luxury shared bathroom. Access is via a shared living area and terrace. Ideal for people travelling with large families or groups.
English and Spanish are spoken by the host, as well as some very broken French, and he is more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
The house is surrounded by mountains on both sides and is located in the quiet village of Lachigolo, a rural farming village where you can still hear Zapotec spoken. Although El Tule (claimed to be home of the Empanada) and Tlacolula (Famous for its Barbacoa) are both close, there are several small eateries in Lachigolo itself, many of which sell hand-made tortillas. Just a 3 minute drive away (10 minutes walking), there is a large open air swimming pool that is open daily from 9:00 – 18:00.
  • The house is very beautiful, quiet and quite large for a family trip. The spaces are comfortable, the cleaning and the kitchen excellent. John was aware of us and is very kind. Highly recommended, we will surely return.

  • Seriously John is an amazing host! Was super nervous about the language barrier being here for the first time and he offered to come grab me from the airport, share some tips and show me where some good spots would be.. his place is exactly as all the reviews state. Super clean, spacious and central location. When I go back I will definitely be booking with John again!

    Julianna2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • The house is spacious for families or large groups, it is comfortable and very clean. We were very comfortable, it rests very well. It is 20 min from the center but it is a good starting point to go to nearby places and routes of interest, if you take a car it is good to get out of there. The neighborhood is not for walking, although it is very quiet because it is on the outskirts of Oaxaca.

Enter the bedrooms via the patio, hacienda-style, with the master room boasting a big hand-carved mirror, and twin vanity in the en suite. Outside, there's desert landscaping plus talavera tile touches, with a hammock for a post-swim siesta. Accommodating groups of more than 6 may be possible upon request
Our house is a traditional hacienda-type house. The guest bedrooms have their only entries through the outside patio. Leading up to the property our family keeps a yard for the electrical business that stores transformers, posts, and the spools of electrical wire. It is definitely a tranquil place, but the crews do come and gather materials occasionally.
Lachigolo is a small and peaceful pueblo, about a 15-minute drive from Oaxaca along the Pan American Highway, and around 5 minutes past El Tule. The location makes it a good base for day trips to places like Hierve al Agua, Teotitlan, and Mitla.
  • Wow! Our stay was a joy from beginning to end. We (three women) stayed several nights in Oaxaca de Juarez before moving to this house, located a short distance outside of the city. We used the house as our base while exploring the surrounding valley sights and pueblos as day trips. The host, Antonio was easy to contact and responded quickly. His brother, Chamin was our local host. Chamin went above and beyond to ensure our stay was memorable. We arranged for Chamin to be our driver/guide, and he showed us a local's perspective that we would never have been able to experience without him. The house and its furnishings were extremely comfortable. The description on the Airbnb website sounds wonderful but in reality, the house exceeds the description. We loved returning to the house and spending time unwinding around the pool and the patio. Restaurant choices were close by, either a walk or short drive, or you could easily prepare an entire meal at the house with its fully equipped kitchen. One person in our group, who travels extensively, stated that the house was one of the top three places she's stayed anywhere in the world! And the other person said she'd come back in a heartbeat! In short, great amenities and hospitality provided by a wonderful family. Thank you, we'll be back!

  • Heaven and more! Very clean, very secure (with automatic locking driveway gates), great plumbing for hot shower and even flushing toilet paper. Beautiful home with Mexican craft furnishings and wall art, thoughtfully equipped with all kitchen needs. The large kitchen sink faces the pool and mountains, so even washing dishes is a pleasure. Wonderful beds and linens, and very generous welcome gift of fruits and other treats. We were sorry to leave after 4 nights.

    Abigail2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • Villa Rey is a beautiful home which exceeded our expectations. The rooms are spacious, well decorated and the kitchen has enough equipment that you could cater a large event. Our host, Chamin (brother of the owner) was great, helping us with tour plans and responding to every need we had. He made our stay special. The location is theoretically 20 minutes from Oaxaca but traffic is heavy and it really takes 30-40 minutes to reach the house most of the time. This is a draw back if your are anxious to spend time in the city. To the extent that you are going to sites East if the city, Villa Rey puts you closer to them—but this would not be a good location for those anxious to walk around Oaxaca itself. Once you reach the house the pool and Mountain View’s make up for the traffic but we did spend a lot of time in the car.

    Douglas2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • The house is beautiful! It has super Mexican details, the whole house is equipped with everything you need. We spent some beautiful days in this place. It is a paradise in Oaxaca!

    Carolina2020-01-29T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely and comfortable home that is even bigger than it looks in the photos. Communication with Antonio was excellent, with very quick responses to our questions. Chamin greeted us, showed us around and then offered to take us to the market in Tule and helped us navigate a very fun food shopping trip. We used the house for fun day trips in the morning and relaxing by the pool in the afternoon.

    Susan2020-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • The hacienda was beautiful and had thoughtful touches. A welcome basket of fruit, local coffee and mezcal with beer in the fridge was just what we needed for a couple lazy days by the pool. There is even an outdoor speaker if you need more than peace and quiet. One day during our stay we spent it with Antonio’s brother exploring the petrified waterfalls, ruins and palenques. Could not have had a better stay!

    Caeli2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent location outside Oaxaca city for your trip to the state of Oaxaca. The home is beautiful with large pool and kitchen with all the bells and whistles. Take advantage of Chamin who will show you all the highlights of the area including ancient Indian ruins and everything the city of Oaxaca has to offer. Highly recommend!

    Richard2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • You just need to stay at this beautiful house. Antonio and especially Chamin are two of the most hospitable people I've ever met in my life. Chamin took my girlfriend and I on a day trip that would not have been possible with anyone else, he arranged every little thing we could think of and more. It made for the most memorable vacation ever. I really could not recommend staying here more highly.

Nice place to stay, and spend time and in a small town. The first floor in the premise is the art gallery Casa Don Taurino, and you will be able to appreciate and may also purchase a beautiful weaving. Also, you will have a nice view of the church as well as have an opportunity to visit the food market, as well as the Mercado de Artesanias.
The house it is located in front of church, and in your room you will have your own space, also there is a nice terrace where you can seat and read a book or listen to music, appreciating the panorama.
This is a small weaving town, and there is a lot to do around. In our place we offer demonstration of weaving and dying techniques, also there are other families that you can visit. You can also visit the museum in town, also there is a tourism booth where your can book a tour that last about four hours.

  • I can’t recommend this place highly enough. It is a truly unique experience to be with the Taurino family in an incredibly beautiful, well located casa. The breakfasts are homemade, delicious and plentiful. Teotitlan is a very clean, well organized, safe and friendly community in which the Taurino family is obviously well respected. We hope we can return soon.

  • This is a delightful family complex in the absolute best location in the town. The hospitality is great. Alejandro speaks excellent English, and the whole family is made up of smart, warm, accommodating people. Stay here, and you will be so glad you did.

    Chris2019-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our stay at Taurino's home very much. It is a large Spanish style home with an open courtyard. The room we stayed in was simple but comfortable with a shared bathroom. It lacked a fan which I realized the next day I should have not felt shy and I could have asked for one. All family members are eager to make your stay comfortable. Four generations live there and yet you feel privacy. We really enjoyed meeting Taurino's aunt and uncle. Everyone speaks Zapoteco, Spanish and English and they are all active weavers. Weaving looms are situated in different areas of the house. The balcony upstairs looks out at the church and I enjoyed sitting up there reading with my kindle late at night, listening to the activities in the park. The cultural community center is a new building and provides a fascinating look at the history of the town and the tradition of weaving. I hope to return someday again.

  • We had a lovely stay here and the rooms were charming. Although this location is a bit further away from the town center (maybe 20 min walk), it is on the main road and close to other weaver families. It gives a great opportunity to walk in the valley and enjoy the beautiful scenery, and it’s easy to catch a moto-taxi for 15 pesos to and from town. They took great care to serve us a yummy breakfast, an extra 100 pesos per person which was well worth it. The rooms were clean and spacious. It does get a little noisy on the main road in the morning with cars passing and barking dogs, but just bring earplugs and you will be fine. The family is very kind, thoughtful and communicative. We had great talks with Victor and hope to return in the future!

It was also very clean and well equipped. Isabel always answered our messages quickly and was very attentive. I highly recommend this accommodation, we had an amazing time and our pet really enjoyed the garden.

  • Excellent house, practically new, spacious, very comfortable and safe. The center of Oaxaca is 30 minutes by car and is close to Tule and Mitla. We had a great time, the nights to rest without noise were excellent, there is Netflix and Sky, after a long day of touring Mitla or Monte Alban we could get to dinner and watch TV for a while. Being away from the center was no problem, on the contrary, we rested without noise and what it means to be in the center. It is petfriendly which was a plus for us, the pet stayed in the house very safe. We will definitely return on our next trip.

  • A nice little place for privacy rest. The little casita is located on the same property as the owner's house, but the placing of the building gives you enough privacy. The casita is small, but very spatious inside, and you also have a big yard in front. Location is great, isolated in a small village, but still close enough (20 minutes walking, or 10 minutes dirving) from Retiro which has everything you need - a market, shops, restaurants, cheap taxi to city of Oaxaca... The hosts are nice, they can give you local tips, but also value your privacy. The location and it's sourroundings gives you a feeling of peace and tranqulity which made this one of my best stays in México.

  • We stayed right in the center in Oaxaca for a month before coming to stay with Sabine and Eddie for the last 3 nights of our stay. So glad we got out of the city! Completely self-contained and private little 'casita' all to ourselves on their property, with our own kitchen (we love to cook) and fantastic shower (a godsend after our last place in the city :), terrace and hammocks nearby. It's a gorgeous little piece of the country out there in Santa Catalina. Super easy still to get to the city when you need to (a lovely 15 minute walk through the countryside to the little town of Retiro where you can catch a colectivo for 11 pesos that takes about 20 minutes to get into the city) or to Tule. They also have a menagerie of friendly, very social dogs (and a few cats, i think, but I only saw one during our stay) they've taken in off the streets who will be overjoyed to meet you. There's a man who sells pan dulce in the mornings and evenings, and someone else with tortillas just outside the gates of their house, as well as a cute little convenience store just down the road where you can get emergency supplies like milk etc if you run out and don't want to go all the way to Retiro. Sabina and Eddie are super kind, considerate hosts, and we had a fantastic stay. Will definitely be returning!

  • Rebeca’s place was quiet and peaceful. The only warning I would give others is the kitchen had nothing except a stove and sink. So don’t come expecting a refrigerator or any way to cook. Overall we were very happy to stay here for the night.

Immerse yourself in the traditional Zapotec way of life. For an extra cost, join our workshops: rug weaving, natural dyes, Temazcal (authentic zapotec sauna), pre-hispanic cooking or learning our native Zapotec language. Explore the countryside and surrounding landscape on horseback riding or hiking. You'll stay in a large well lit room with rug gallery, book collection, fancy fan and a hammock.

  • Samuel and his family are kind and welcoming people. Teotitlan is an incredible town. It's small and charming, and so neat. If you're looking for nights out, this is not your spot, but if you want a truly unique, relaxing experience getting to know an ancient village in a beautiful location, this is your kind of place. We were especially lucky to be there during Dia de Los Muertos, which was a magical time to see the town. The location is not ideal for getting to the city centre if that's what you're looking for, but it wasn't bad either. Took about 40 mins by car. (I recommend renting a car to get around!) But it was perfect for being right in between Monté Alban and Hierve el Agua (about 45 min-1hr to each). There's also beautiful scenery right in the farm's backyard. We didn't do any of the guided experiences at the farm, but I know Samuel set up a temezcal for others staying there, and one guest got lessons from Samuel's mother, Leonor, using the weaving loom. Thanks for everything to Samuel and his family!! It was an unforgettable experience:)

  • It is a wonderful place to rest, get to know a little of the local activities and try mezcal. The food very rich, and the attention of the owners is exceptional.

  • A truly unique opportunity to learn and dive into the culture of teotitlán. Samuel and his family are welcoming, loving, and full of helpful information. We loved it!

  • This was my second stay with Sam and his family and just like the first time, it was lovely. The rooms are comfy and cozy, the family and animals super friendly and it’s an excellent location to explore the town/area. This time I also took the dying and weaving workshops with Leneor which were super interesting and a lot of fun.

  • I had an amazing experience staying at this home. The town itself is quaint and charming, and I had a great time wandering around, seeing local festivities, and even meeting a few people from the town. The space itself is great, the property is beautiful and even though they were doing some construction it didn't bother me at all. The room was cozy, the bed was comfortable with super soft sheets. As for the experiences they offer, I highly recommend taking a workshop for dyeing or weaving. Their mom, Leonor, is kind and patient and a great teacher. Not only did she help me make a wonderful keepsake, but we got to talk and share our lives a little bit (and practice Spanish!). I also got to talk to the other family members quite a bit, and I felt it was very special that I got to know them during my stay. I also really recommend taking the hike, the views were breathtaking!

    Sadie2019-04-21T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend and I stayed here for a couple of days and had a wonderful time! Samuel arranged for a local driver to pick us up from the Oaxaca City airport and when we arrived, we were given plenty of tips on where to eat and what to do in Teotilan. We did several activities at Samuel's place, including horseback riding, a traditional temezcal sweat lodge, and a mole cooking class, all of which were amazing! We look forward to our return!

    Arielle2019-04-10T00:00:00Z
  • Outstanding farmstay experience! Morning horseback rides and evening Zapotec history lessons with Celestino were the highlights of our stay.

My house is near the famous Tule Tree. You'll love it because you be in touch with nature close to tourist attractions in the beautiful valley of Oaxaca between Tule & Mitla. The natural area with the beautiful mountains nearby is excellent for hiking and cycling. It is a good place for writers, artists, hiker and nature friends.
The apartment is close enough to Oaxaca City to enjoy your stay and far enough away to be in a quiet world in our indigenous village with a long time tradition. American-European standard. Bedroom with matrimonial bed, comfortable mattress and spacious closet. Linens, towels, warm blankets provided. The sofa in the living room can be used as single bed. Dining room, fully equipped integral kitchen: stove and oven, large fridge, microwave, coffee-maker, sandwich-maker, dishes and kitchenware. Modern bathroom with bathtub. The independent unit has a separate entrance and a covered private terrace. Comes with all services. Safe, clean and comfortable. Friendly neighbourhood. WiFi included, spacious private parking, laundry facilities for a small fee.
The small authentic village 1.5 mile from the famous Tule-Tree and 10 miles from Oaxaca City is located in the centre of the main tourist attractions. Many archaeological sites like Yagul, Mitla and famous handicraft villages like Teotitlan del Valle, as well as the historic centre of Oaxaca City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are within a 20 minute ride and have a easy access by public transport. In the next block is a small corner shop and provides you with the basics. Tortilla and sweet bread sellers come regulary and go through the whole village and two days a week goes a women with her VW-Bus through the main roads and sells fresh fruit and vegetables. The complete infrastructure of grocery stores, market, pharmacies, laundries, restaurants in the market area nearby (around 15 minute walk)
  • It is a wonderful place nestled in a very picturesque small town. The sunrises and sunsets are incredible. It is really possible to breathe the rural environment of Oaxaca. The place provided by Sabine was impeccable and very cozy. Sabine behaved very kindly and was always on the lookout for what we needed. In short a highly recommended experience.

    Oswalth2019-07-18T00:00:00Z
  • Sabine and Eddy’s home was so much more than we expected - the apartment itself was clean and bright with a well-stocked kitchen, large bathroom, comfy bed where we slept well every night, and an extra living room perfect for working or exercising or reading! We loved the beautiful grounds with mountain views, inspiring sunsets, and hiking trails right outside the property. Sabine and Eddy’s dogs kept us the best company, greeting us when we came and went, such a joy while traveling :) Walking to the nearby market was one of our favorite adventures - through the corn fields with even more gorgeous views. And they had everything we needed to make delicious, fresh meals en casa. While we felt absolutely spoiled by the location (at the foot of the mountains, outside the noise of Oaxaca city, but with the centro accesible via inexpensive taxi/colectivo in 30-40 min) and simple amenities, truly it was Sabine’s hospitality that made our stay so memorable. She and Eddy picked us up and dropped us off in Tule to make arriving and catching our flight out as easy as possible and made us feel so welcome to partake in their weekly routine of shopping and playing games. We of course extended our stay to a full month and found it very hard to leave. I would highly recommend their home to anyone who enjoys nature and the simple pleasures of life, and I can’t wait to return :)

    Stephanie2018-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very pleasant stay in Santa Catalina de Sena. The town is just a 20 minute walk to the Mercado where you can find fresh groceries, restaurants, etc. and to taxi collectivo, which brings you to Oaxaca Centro (just 11 pesos). The apartment has much space with 1 bedroom, 1 living room and a separate large fully furnished kitchen area. It is an independent house surrounded by a very beautiful garden with a lot of special views especially during the sunset and sunrise. You can see Oaxaca at a distance and amazing mountain and cloud views. Night time the stars and the lights of Oaxaca City give an amazing view as well. There is a private area in front of the door where you can work or just enjoy the views around, listen to the birds, and watch butterflies daytime and if you are lucky, fireflies at night. Everywhere was clean and the Wifi was good enough for both of us to work. We felt very welcomed by Sabine and Eddie, who were taking care very nicely all the time. We will definitely come back. Thank you guys!

  • Sabine and Eddy were amazing hosts! They were so kind and made sure we had a comfortable stay on their property. The house itself is very lovely. It was clean when we arrived and Sabine made sure to give us fresh sheets, towels and toilet paper every Saturday (we stayed for about 2-3 weeks). They also had water accessible to buy from them - 5 gallons for 30 pesos to be exact, which is a very fair price. Moreover, the home is located on a beautiful property in Santa Catalina, which is very close to Tule/Retiró. It's about a 15 minute walk from the closest Mercado and bus/taxi stop that can take you to Tule or Oaxaca City for very cheap. If you get caught in the rain though, you have to find a taxi driver that is willing to take you all the way to Santa Catalina from Tule/Retiró for about 50 pesos. Although you have to walk for a bit to find a bus or taxi, it is a beautiful walk, as their home is surround by farm fields, farm animals and hills. It is very beautiful and a perfect location if you like to be in nature and hiking! I would definitely recommend their space if you decide to visit Oaxaca, especially for an extended period of time. Thank you so much, Sabine and Eddy! :)

  • I had a great stay in Santa Catalina de Sena. Sabine and Eddie were extremely helpful. They explained the transportation and orientated me to the surroundings. They even let me hitch a ride with them to the market when they were going. The apartment is simple--no frills--but fully functioning. It looks exactly like the pictures. Very clean. This is a place to visit if you want to experience small-town Mexican life, rather than visit Oaxaca City. That is not to say that it's hard to visit the city--I stayed in the apartment for a month and went to the city probably ten times. There are collective taxis and buses about a 15-minute walk from the house that can take you to the city in about 30 mins (door-to-door maybe 45 mins). The hiking around the property is great. I spent many days hiking the hills behind the house by myself. The landscape is beautiful. I was there in the dry season and can't wait to return in the rainy season to see how much it has changed. Would recommend.

    David2017-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • The apartment at Sabine's house was lovely, tastefully furnished, and the surroundings absolutely beautiful. It's an oasis in the Oaxacan countryside. Just remember to bring your mosquito repellent if you want to use the hammocks at night! Sabine and her husband were kind enough to pick us up from the bus stop in Tule when we arrived and drop us off again the morning we left, which is useful if you aren't arriving by car (we didn't have one). Tule is about a half hour walk away, and the nearest bus stop about fifteen minutes away.

Feel free to take as much time as you like to do your shopping while you stay with us. We accept cash, card payments, PayPal and venmo. You are welcome to join us at parties or festivals in the village if there are any during your stay. There is a 15 peso fee to access the sacred mountain. Tickets are available at the museum, we try to keep a stock of them to make it easier to for you, ask us. It costs 1,500 pesos per person. The cost is $1500 pesos per day. The cost is 1500 pesos, all inclusive (ingredients and teaching). HORSEBACK RIDING. My brother Celestino could arrange horse riding sessions for one or more people to explore the country side, ride on  the foothills, enjoy the landscape of agave fields or stop at the local damn where migratory birds arrive. You can tailor your ride according to your interest. 1 to 2 hours ride: $800 pesos per person. 2 to 4 hours ride: $1,500 pesos per person 4 to 6 hours ride: $2,500 pesos per person TEMAZCAL. The temazcal session lasts up to two hours and it costs $700 pesos per person, payable up front. Check availability in advance, we need 24 to 12 hrs advance notice for bookings. No refunds for cancellations done 8 hours in advance due to expenses incurred in prep work and gathering wild plants for the temazcal session. FARMING: If you are interested in native corn farming (milpa) make sure you ask us and bring a learning attitude. At home you won't see much of our farming practices, we only have a tractor and a pen with 28 goats in our family compound. We plant 8 hectares (about 20 acres)  of milpa in 5 plots of land distributed outside of the village. Everyone born in the community has the birthright to a piece of land to build their own home and grow their own food. All the land is in fact communal because the land was given to our community by the great spirit and has remained communal since the founding of our village. Every family has several pieces of land outside the village where they grow the milpa system (corn, beans and squash). We plant corn from mid June to mid July,  in a way that westerners call dry farming, we call it spiritual farming because when we plant corn according to the cloud and rain patterns we establish a direct connection with the heavens. In fact, our village festival takes place between the first and second wednesday of July. We gather to celebrate the planting of the corn and the Feather Dances perform an ancient Ghost Dance to pray for the much needed rain for our milpa, therefore when it rains the rain doesn't only feeds the corn but also our spirit. After planting the corn, we do some weeding around the end of August and after that there is not much happening. We can start gathering wild plants and edible parts of the pumpkin plant throughout the year, including grasshoppers and huitlacoche (corn smut). We harvest some time after day of the dead, in fact we celebrate day of the dead because the corn plant dyes when the rains stop at the end of October. The corn turns from greel to yellow and is left to dry in the fields for about a month . A guideed field trip to our milpa fields cost $250 pesos per person. Ask for availability when you check in. We also have a herd of 65 cows that we graze in the communal territories in the mountains and foothills of the Sierra Madre de Norte in summer and fall. We round up our cows down to the valley to graze in the cornfields during winter and spring. This year due to lack of rain we have been grazing our cows in the lowlands all year round. You are welcome to join a day of herding for $350 pesos per person 10am to 6 pm. We spend the whole day herding the cows in rotational way  around the communal pastures and our cornfields. Herding is a great way to slow down your phase of life and follow the herd while enjoying nature and having a pristine oportunity to observe the local flora and fauna in a peaceful setting. Bring your camera. In the morning we take our goats on a 3 hour adventure in the foothills of the sacred mountain, our two dogs (Botas and Pompis) join in with Dingo, our little australian cattle dog. Our goats know their little routine but we have to make sure they don't cause any trouble to the neighbors. This is an oportunity to apreciate how we have integrated small animals into our daily life to produce highquality meat for the family and the community. The experience costs $150 pesos. With all the work going on we have only a small home garden for growing vegetables, if you are interested in learning how to grow European vegetables we could point you to other permaculture farms in the area. There are several restaurants and places to eat. From award winning restaurants where famous chefs have come to learn about Prehispanic foods to a small front shop restaurants run families. (Read more at the bottom).
  • Our family (including 3 kids) had a great stay at Samuel’s place. We learned a lot about the weaving process and the stories behind the patterns in the weaving. Everyone was so welcoming and relaxed and the space was clean and very comfortable. Highly recommended as a place to stay and would love to return for a class some day.

  • Authentic experience with a happy and caring family. Come as a guest, leave as family. I took a dying and weaving class. it was such a special gift to learn this ancestral skill and the meanings behind the patterns. Beds are comfortable, rooms/bathrooms are simple and clean.

  • This was a great stay, I ended up extending another night. Leonora is a such a ray of sunshine and although I don’t speak Spanish well, we were able to get on great. This is a working farm so you will wake up early to the sounds of animals and work being done. The bathroom is also at the end of the structure so you will have to throw on some shoes to get down there. There is nowhere to hang your clothes so I ended up laying mine out on the extra bed and it was fine. There is a ceiling fan and mosquito netting on the windows. I never used the kitchen as there were plenty of very, very inexpensive food options close by and Cafe Vid has a nice cappuccino, the market was about 3 blocks down, a convenience store 2 blocks down. I took one of her weaving classes and made a nice little 24”w x 19”l piece made over a 2 day period. You will pay for the first day of full hands on instruction and then the next day for supplies, you go through a lot of wool but its worth it. I would really say give yourself 3 days for a really nice piece and think out your design ahead of time. For the future, they are also constructing a new 3 bedroom facility with a bathroom inside as well as a more modern kitchen that is due to ready in about 4 months. Some tips: bring bug spray and shower flip flops.

  • -Life is beautiful -that is only one sentence I can explain about this family . The beauty of life are surrounding me since I woke up in the morning till time to close my eyes again at night. Sitting ,talking eating and big laughing in the huge kitchen of samuel's family are the best unforgettable memorial and if you are lucky enough you would have a chance to try Mexican -Thai fried rice , cooked by samuel. The best! .. Do not miss to ask mama to bring you to the temazcal. It will bring you back to realize what the meaning of simply human being is. Everybody have our own secret 's space or moment in the village or the cities that we had visited. Me too! 'Tiotitlan is magical' but i'm Not gonna tell you my secret corner. Please find it yourself.! Staying at samuel 's place You will get much more than what u expect soecially if you have to traveller 's soul!. Wifi is the best. 5 mins walking to the local market . Close to the good cafe . Nearby the really nice homemade food restaurant. Enjoy your stay .

  • I have completely fallen in love with Dixza farm and the family. I’ve never experienced such a special air bnb stay before - the prior communication was excellent and my welcome was heart warming and very enjoyable. I even loved it so much that I extended my stay for an extra week! The town is very idyllic, surrounded by the beautiful mountains. The morning market is great for fresh, organic food and drink supplies. The local people are warm, friendly and impressively hard working. There are many walks and activities within the area, I would especially recommend the natural dyeing and weaving workshops with Leonar and Mario to get an authentic understanding of the traditional craft and lifestyle of Teotitlan Del Valle. Another highlight was exploring the countryside by horseback with Celestino in the beautiful light of both early morning and sunset. On sundays there is an epic local market in the neighbouring town tlacolula. Be prepared with your budget - the Zapotec rugs are a worthy investment and very well priced considering the skill and labour it takes to create them. A truly authentic experience, full of laughter, life and strong connection to nature. I will be back for sure!!

  • Visiting this traditional Benizaa (Zapotec) family of weavers, the first impression of of the beautiful culture of these beautiful people is instantly seen and felt. Teotitlán del Valle is an amazing place - ancient and Majestic. Traditional Hand died wool, is all over the place and delightful to see, and the looms are beautiful works of are in and of themselves. Leonora (mom), Mario (dad), Samuel and Celestino are truly SuperHosts in every way! The place is definitely a working and active space and the activity and all the animals add to the realness and comfort of this Home. I will definitely be back! - Cheers!

  • If there were more stars I put them on !!! The stay very gentle and pleasant. The quiet area and just across the street you find everything you might need. The kitchen very well equipped (enough dishes, glasses, blender, coffee maker, super powerful stove, refrigerator, pans, cooking utensils, etc). The beds very comfortable. I loved that they ask for favor to separate the garbage. Don Roberto super punctual at the indicated time of arrival and departure. There was no problem at any time.

  • A very nice space, with everything you need to have a good time and rest. It is as (or better than) as shown in the photos. Conchis has been very attentive, punctual and understanding because our departure took a little longer than agreed (thanks). The neighborhood quite quiet and safe. The car stays right in front of the entrance to the house, which makes access very easy. The house is on one floor, which for us was a great advantage. In short: we loved it. Thank you!!
