  • Wish we would have had more than just 3 days to stay here! The woodchoppers inn is a lovely rustic historic cottage with lots of charming vintage details. Spacious, cosy and very peaceful place, a good base for us to explore parts of the southern region. Thank you Kelly for sharing this beautiful house!

  • Woodchopper's Inn is a quirky cottage but has all the amenities you need. One bedroom has to access the bathroom through the other bedroom so best for a family or good friends! Waikaia is a lovely village with plenty to offer: a great pub, cafe/general store, tennis courts, a very interesting museum and plenty of nice walks. There were even sheep dog trials while we were there!

  • If you want to sit back and relax for a day or two and take in the generosity of the locals then this is the spot. Great pub round the corner as well as a good cafe and general store. The cottage has many lovely old ornaments and decorator items throughout. Lots of hot water too. The beds were snuggly warm and comfy. Kelly and Noline communicated very well. Easy check in and out.

Looking for something a little different? Feel like self isolating for a while? A recycled 20 ft shipping container converted to stylish accommodation. Love soaking in a huge private steamy hot bath staring up at the Milky Way counting shooting stars while enjoying a glass of wine? Only 40 mins from Queenstown airport on the road to Milford Sound. Has amazing mountain/river views. Large deck. En-suite shower and toilet. Fridge, microwave, jug and toaster. Gas BBQ. Comfy queen size bed.
Just 40 minutes stunning drive from Queenstown airport via SH6 on the road Milford Sound and Lake Te Anau is this stylish cabin. Situated just 1 kilometre off the Southern Scenic Route on SH 6 the cabin is set on 13 acres of farmland with stunning mountain, river and rural farmland views. It is also adjacent to a much larger river reserve containing trout and eels. There is also the nearby Brightwater natural water spring. Please note. If the dates are not available or suitable for you we have another bnb on the property. It can sleep up to 3. You will find the listing on Bnb called Eco cabin between Queenstown and Milford Sound. Ideally placed for the Milford Sound traveller most bus companies will pick up from the nearby Kingston township if the guest wishes to travel by bus to this attraction. If you want to try feeding and interacting with quirky goats this is something you can definitely do. Every guest gets the option of planting a NZ native tree on the property. Pete has raised these in his grow house for this purpose. If you don’t have time or are not able to plant one Pete will plant one for every guest who can’t. If trout fishing, swimming in the summer, river and rural walks or soaking in the hot bath under the amazing night sky is what you love then this is the place to stay. If weather conditions permit there is an outdoor fire in front of the cabin to chat around and watch the skies darken. Subject to there being no summer restrictions on outdoor fires. If you’re keen you can come down and feed the resident long fin monster eel. Believed to be around 80 years old it’s usually hanging out for a few treats. Nearby activities include horse riding, scenic flights, clay bird shooting, archery, hiking, mountain biking, trout fishing and animal experiences. The newly opened Around the Mountains cycle trail runs adjacent to the property. Mountain bikes are available for hire and Pete is more than happy to drop you and the bikes off anywhere on the trail and pick you up when you are finished. If time permits and you are keen on exploring Lake Wakatipu by kayak (A 10 minute drive away) Pete has kayaks for hire and will transport the kayaks to Kingston and pick them up again when you are ready. Life Jackets are provided and the kayaks are sturdy and safe. It’s only an option if Lake conditions are favourable. In winter the accommodation is only 35 minutes to the Remarkables ski field access road. The night sky with the lack of any light pollution is truly stunning. Occasionally the Aurora Australis is visible which is a sight to behold. The super friendly hosts Emily and Pete have a real passion for the area and love to share it with guests from around the world. They are more than happy to offer advice and suggestions to travellers on all facets of the area and NZ generally. The hosts are also keen organic fruit and vegetable growers and beekeepers which is all evident on the property. There are a selection of friendly tame farm animals which are always happy to be fed if the guest is an animal lover. For dining options the nearby towns of Garston Athol and Kingston are within a short drive. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided along with cereal and bread for toast and a selection of spreads. A portable gas cooker is also available for use as well as the BBQ Note: In summer there may be regional fire restrictions or dry and windy conditions which prevent the use of the outdoor fire.
The perfect place to unwind in nature but so close to Queenstown. It’s also on the way to world renowned Milford Sound and Te Anau. You will immediately feel relaxed in the wide open spaces with the ability to stroll down to the river (only 100 metres away) and see trout or just sit on the rivers edge for a picnic or glass of wine. Alternatively relaxing on the bean bags on the deck watching the sun go down with a glass of wine is also a popular pastime with guests!
  • The drive from Queenstown to Kingston was absolutely beautiful, and Pete’s cabin was even more beautiful. Pete was so thoughtful with the little touches, so warm and welcoming and had the most amazing property. We absolutely adored the outdoor bath and enjoyed a soak by starlight. The cabin itself was super cozy and comfortable and was such a great place to spend the night. We loved getting to meet the resident goats and taking a stroll by the river. Christian and I can’t wait to come back and spend some more time at Pete’s property!

  • We had a great time staying with Pete! Check-in was very easy and the location was stunning. We enjoyed meeting the charming animals (Rosie the goat and Taco the cat in particular) and using the firepit when it got chilly at night. The outdoor bathtub with string lights was also appreciated :) would highly recommend

    Steph2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • We adored this funky, relaxing cabin overlooking the mountains. Pete was a great host and introduced us to his sweet goat pack + other critters on the property. A perfect place to close out our trip!

  • Great little spot to retreat to! Loved the views and open space. Pete and Emily were very welcoming and showed us all around their property. Really enjoyed our stay!

    Taylor2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • Pete's place is very unique and gives guests an authentic New Zealand rural experience. There is so much to do from swimming in the river, to brushing the goats, lighting a fire or playing any one of the many games Pete has provided. The outside bath with views of the sky is a particularly nice touch. Definitely stay here if you're coming to Queenstown and want to get off of the tourist trail.

    Chris2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • We had a perfect stay at Pete’s place and wish we could have stayed longer. Emily and Pete were amazing hosts; their hospitality was much appreciated!

  • Mike & Shona are great hosts and their local knowledge was very helpful for us to plan our contingencies after a canceled Milford sound cruise. Their place had all the amenities and our hosts were more than happy to help us with anything that we needed. The location is a little out of Queenstown-Te Anau but it blessed with some great sunsets and sunrises. Wish we had stayed a couple more nights here.

Studio self-contained unit above a double garage. Quiet and tranquil as accommodation is set back from the road. Private entrance with ample parking. Enjoy the entire 1.5 acres of landscaped grounds. Spectacular scenery, with views over farmland towards the river.
Open planned studio/loft with walk-in wardrobe, shower and bathroom. Double bed with views over farmland. BBQ available during the summer months. Small kitchenette with cooking hob.
  • We only had the opportunity to stay a single night and wish we could have stayed longer. This is a trout fisherman’s dream. Private access to some amazing trout water. The apartment was perfect. Comfortable bed and a great view of the working farm and plenty of space. I ended up fishing until dark then went into town for dinner and the pub was closed. We ended up driving back down to Gore for a late dinner. That was all my fault. We would definitely come back and stay a few days.

The Cosy Cottage is a small unique space in Athol, Northern Southland. Situated near state highway 6 only 1 hours drive to Queenstown and world famous fishing nearby. This place is quiet, cosy and comfortable.
  • We stayed in Athol after 16 hours worth of plane rides, 12 or more hours in airports, and driving from Queenstown. It was the perfect quiet getaway. Anita is very genuine, kind, and the accommodation was clean. It was the perfect place to refresh and rest before our New Zealand adventure.

Lake's End Lodge is beautiful old Villa packed with character on the banks of Lake Wakatipu. Surrounded in mountains and farmland, in the cute wee village of Kingston. We offer free breakfast, & have loads of facilities such as hot tub, sauna, bikes, kayaks and more. Note: We prefer 2 night minimum stays, and you'll have time to enjoy all of the facilities! If you really can only fit in 1 night we will accept the booking, but there is an additional cleaning fee.
This is a large sunny room with lake, mountain and garden views. It has a custom built queen size "floating bed" which is suspended from the ceiling. French doors which open onto the deck, and a mezzanine floor which has a single bed (so the room can sleep 3 if you like, just ask.) There are 3 other guest rooms in the house including a bunk room, so it's social, but still relaxing. The BnB is in a beautifully renovated 100 year old villa. Great fully stocked kitchen, shared living area, big open fire and high ceilings. We've also got a great big games room with table tennis, & other games. There is a BBQ/kitchen area, and extensive gardens to enjoy. Also for your enjoyment: Bikes, kayaks, tennis racquets, golf clubs, ski/snowboard equipment, sauna, spa/hot tub, cinema room, library, arcade machine, xbox, big comfy lounge suite for chilling out.
Kingston is a small village at the very end of Lake Wakatipu, just 30 minutes from the airprt, and 40 minutes to Queenstown. A very friendly community, and a relaxing place to visit. We've got Lake Wakatipu right there, where you can enjoy boating, water sports, fishing, kayaking, and swimming (if you dare!) There are a couple of cool walks you can do in the area, as well as the Around the Mountains cycle trail which either starts or ends in Kingston. Kingston is also great for rock climbing, and there are tennis courts, golf and lawn bowls.
  • Very friendly hosts, amazing location, so many different facilities, fresh homemade bread in the morning!!!

    Natalia2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • What a fantastic place! Seconds from the lake, and the few restaurants in town. Plenty of activities to do right at the house, which had a wonderful vibe and thoughtful touches. Took advantage of the sauna too! Wish I had more nights at this spot.

    Brian2020-01-23T00:00:00Z
  • This house is full of amusements. Also very beatiful lake is just a second away. You can swim or rowing in there. It's remote, so buy some food beforehand. Of course, there is a local restaurant right in front of the house, and the taste is indulgent. It's only for people, so quiet people have lots of space to share :)

    준일2020-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • This is the best possible place you could get in the area for your money! There is so much to do here that even two nights is not enough. They have a lot of quality activities here. The area is also perfect for stargazing at night by the lake.

  • Clean and tidy. Owners were away when I stayed. Staff were friendly

    Dave2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful, peaceful place well enough equipped for a long stay - sauna, bikes, lots of books, board games & nik naks inside & out to explore. There is a brisk walk up the hill a few metres to the west to raise the heart beat after a day of travel. The brekkie, included in the tariff, (add on fresh laid eggs for 50 cents each) was excellent fresh baked bread & lots of spreads as well as cereal & milk of the cow, soy & almond varieties. We went to the pub across the road for a tasty evening meal but pizza at $7 a serve was on offer at the Airbnb if we'd preferred something lighter. Though there were a number of guests staying we seemed to disappear into various spaces & there was privacy if we wanted it. Two bathrooms in the house seemed to be adequate. We wished we could have stayed longer. Thank you Kimberley & John.

  • Nice place just at the lakeside in Kingston. Good service with breakfast. Lots of things to do and a great kitchen to prepare your meals in. Really inspiring design in the house and the different rooms. Overall a nice concept and we really enjoyed meeting some other guests visiting the same time as us.

    Albin2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • Hard to know where to start when you find wonderful hosts combined with an outstanding property. The small village at the end of the lake is picture perfect as is the home that Kimberley and John have created. Do yourself a favour and go and stay there on your next trip to this beautiful part of New Zealand. Make sure you stay for at least 2 nights. You won't regret it.

The hot tub is filled daily with mountain fresh water. Is chemical free. Gas heated by a heat exchanger to luxurious 38 degrees. The private hot tub area is approx 50 metres from the accommodation overlooking the river and mountains and is the perfect spot to stargaze on a dark night. Please note. They can offer advice and suggestions to travellers on all facets of their stay. They are also keen Peony flower growers (flowering around Oct-Dec)organic fruit and vege growers, animal lovers and beekeepers and this is all evident on the property. The nearby Garston coffee caravan is also hugely popular serving tasty burgers and great coffee. The nearby Kingston railway station has recently re opened as a cafe and restaurant and has a great outdoor area with lake views. Please note there is a microwave and refrigerator but no stovetop or oven but there is a portable outdoor gas cooker to use as well as a gas operated BBQ. A portable cot is available for babies.
The perfect place to unwind in nature but so close to Queenstown. It's also on the way to World renowned Milford Sound and Te Anau. You will immediately feel relaxed in the wide open spaces with the ability to stroll down to the river(only 100 metres away)and see the trout and native eels or just sit on the rivers edge for a picnic or glass of wine.
  • Pete was very welcoming when we arrived to the airbnb. He is very friendly and fun to talk to. He let us meet his pet goats, chickens, turkey, and Taco the cat. The farm is very large and the room we stayed in was cozy. It had all the essentials that we needed. The location is quiet and about 45 min from Queenstown. You can spend a couple of days exploring the area and take a stroll along the nearby creek. Overall, we had a fantastic experience and would recommend Pete's place to stay.

  • This would be one of the highlights of our NZ trip. Our stay here was booked last minute due to the Milford flood but our night here definitely made up for it! The property has a beautiful scenery surrounded by mountains and clear skies. The room had all the required amenities and it was sparkling clean. We met the goats and had an amazing time adventuring with them. Pete is a friendly host and had plenty of interesting facts to share, especially for city dwellers like my wife and I. I will highly recommend a stay here! 10 out of 5 stars!

  • This is a beautiful spot on the lake. Easy check in and fantastic communication! Lovely house to relax and unwind.

  • Away from the crowds and busyness that is Queenstown yet only 35 minutes drive away(and what a scenic drive it is!). Hunters lake house is a haven which soothes your soul after a hectic day. Local cafes (one within 100 metres) serve great fare at reasonable prices or cook at home in the renovated kitchen. We recommend that you get back in time to sit on the verandah and watch the colours change across the lake.

Welcome to our cosy, warm private fully self contained spacious 1 bedroom guest house converted from a woolshed which is situated on our working dairy farm. It has 1 queen bed in the seperate bedroom, a lounge, kitchen & bathroom for the occupants and has everything you need for an overnight stay and to cook a meal if you prefer. It is located: 30km from Gore 40km from Waimumu 30km from Lumsden 98km from Invercargill 100km Te Anau 130km from Queenstown (International airport)
Our place is a work in progress so we are always working on changes and improvements so photos may differ slightly when you arrive but only for the better :) It is very spacious with living, dinig, kitchen and separate bedroom.
You will be staying on a working farm so will hear occasional "farm noises" like cows mooing etc
  • This must be one of the most complete airbnbs we ever visited, with an impressive attention to detail.

    Jef2019-04-14T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay here! Such a unique experience. We were very cosy and comfortable.

    Anne2019-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful little cottage amongst a picturesque setting of rolling farm land. The place is spacious with a full kitchen. There definitely is no road noise. We were happy with it's location and took day trips to explore in every direction. In doing so we also found it easy to check email at libraries in towns along the way.

    Diane2019-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Sue's house is large and the whole is available, with everything you need. This is a great place to relax and enjoy the city life. However, it is necessary to pay attention to mosquitoes because it is far from the city, so it is best to buy enough rations before check-in. The kitchen is very convenient and what equipment is available. The only suggestion is to move the washing machine in. The taste of the laundry area is really unbearable.

    Neal2019-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • It was such a nice experience for us "city-people" to stay on a farm, we slept very well and woke up to amazing scenery. Definitely a recommendation.

  • Great place if you want to get away from it all. Plenty of space within. Sue is a host that trusts and offers country confidence in her guests. I’d recommend staying at the woolshed. Derek T.

  • I think this place is great. The house is clean and comfortable to live in. Open the floor window and you can see the endless prairie. Wendy was very nice. She prepared dessert snacks for us and showed us around her farm. If it wasn't for the itinerary, I'd love to stay another night.

Athol is nestled in a sheltered valley in Northern Southland in between the Eyre Mountains and Hector Range. We are walking distance from the famous Mataura River which is great for trout fishing and even closer to the around the mountains cycle trail. Food and drink is also available at two locations in Athol, only a short walk away from Athol Valley Cottages.
Our 50m2 self-contained two bed room farm cottage is a warm, comfortable place for travelers. We provide linen and laundry facilities. Our cottage sleeps four people. Two single beds and a double. We encourage guests to relax on the deck while in the peaceful country setting.
Athol is a small town in Southland, New Zealand. It is located on State Highway 6, 55 km south of Queenstown, halfway between Lumsden and Kingston on the Southern Scenic Route. Farming has always been very important in the district, though in earlier times gold mining, centred on nearby Nokomai, was also significant.
  • We loved our stay at this little cottage. It was small, but cozy and my husband and I never felt cramped. The house had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The beautiful Mataura River is nearby, and we when we weren’t out trying to catch those spooky trout we loved sitting with a drink on the patio in the rocking chairs, and looking out at the beautiful scenery. There isn’t much in the town itself, but we definitely enjoyed more than a few delicious baked goods from the cafe across the highway and a beer from the Brown Trout cafe. I would definitely recommend a stay here!

  • Place itself was really good. Highly recommended!

    Mike2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • Amanda has provided excellent communication throughout our intended stay in Athol. Unfortunately, at the time of my intended stay throughout her place, there was exceptional circumstances (major flooding) leading to numerous road closures and subsequently prevention of access to her property. Aware and empathetic of the situation, the executive decision was ultimately made by myself to seek alternative accommodation - particularly in lieu of these road closures. Amanda was very helpful and supportive in facilitating this, assisting with Airbnb staff throughout the process. I am unable to comment directly on her place but given the exceptional location (intended fishing trip) and supportive communication, I can only highly recommend Amanda and her place for future travelers.

Athol is a small town in Southland, New Zealand. It is located on State Highway 6, 55 km south of Queenstown, half way between Lumsden and Kingston on the Southern Scenic Route. Farming has always been very important in the district, though in earlier times gold mining, centred on nearby Nokomai, was also significant. In recent decades tourist numbers have grown. The Mataura River is well known for the quality of its brown trout fishing, and the Around the Mountains Cycle Trail, opened in November 2014, has further boosted visitor figures. There is some uncertainty over how Athol received its name. The first record of it is when the township was surveyed in 1863. Several suggestions have been made. One is that it was named after Harry Athol, the proprietor of the first hotel. There is no early record of a person of this name and there may be a confusion with Harry Arthur, who ran the Athol accommodation house in the 1860s. Another is that it was named after the home district in Scotland of early landowner W. B. Rogers. As Rogers was born in New Zealand and his father came from Cumberland, England, this is not likely to be the case. Athol is 275m above sea level. It lies on a small plain surrounded by mountains, including the Mid Dome (1478m) to the south and Flagstaff (1037m) to the east. To the west of the township flow the Eyre Creek and smaller Quoich Creek, and these join the Mataura River about 2 km to the south.

  • I wasn't able to make my booking, however she was totally courteous, communicative and understanding through the ordeal. I'm certain she is just as wonderful a host in person! If I were travelling through the area again, I would definitely jump at the chance to stay at Graceland BnB!

  • We had a great time staying at Deb's place. We had dinner and breakfast there (extra cost) and it was delicious. They severed salad from their garden and fresh eggs from the chicken. The hosts, Deb, Moya and Jeramy are all nice and friendly.

    Michelle2019-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • The river rock bathroom was awesome! The hosts were friendly. This was our first time staying at a B&B, and we didn’t realize going into it that we were staying in someone’s home. The place has lots of thoughtful touches and the hosts were friendly. I’d recommend this place if you’re looking to experience a local New Zealand home. Thanks again for hosting us!

    Kelsey2018-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Deb and Moya have created a wonderful comfortable home with a beautiful garden. The guest bedroom and attached bathroom are very large. Deb and Moya invited to make ourselves at home and we did. We ordered a dinner (meals are available for a fee) and enjoyed a delicious meal with Deb, Moya and Gerry. Gizmo, the little dog, is a delight. At Deb’s suggestion we booked a discount Milford Sound cruise and saved lots. An enjoyable stay!

The Kingston Boathouse is only 25 minutes away from the Remarkables ski fields and only 40 minutes to Queenstown. We're also on the way to Te Anau and Milford / Doubtful Sounds. Beautifully located outside the hustle of Queenstown while still being accessible. We have great views all around and are only 80 meters away from Lake Wakatipu. Perfect for couples, solo adventurers, and business travelers - this newly designed extension to our Kingston Boathouse is stylish, comfy and well equipped.
We're so excited to be able to share the Kingston Boathouse with you. We've recently built this extension and styled it ourselves to match the mid century vibe of the original Boathouse. From digging the foundations to custom built desks, we've put our heart into this design which draws on the best of the Queenstown Lakes region. The space offers a number of very comfy, very cool features: - the bedroom has an amazing view over the lake and a great ensuite with a huge shower and lovely refurbished vanity. - the raised mezzanine has a gorgeous and fun swinging chair, a working desk and a library. - the lower lounge has a fantastic view towards the lake and surrounding mountains as well as instant access to the deck. - the kitchen is loaded with all you'll need for a foodies holiday and if it ain't there, just ask. - the garden outside has around 99 edible things growing depending on the season and we'd like you to help yourself to anything from fresh herbs to quince. - Being solar powered we also offer Free EV charging in the day using our Tesla Charger or wall socket at 5kw per hour
Kingston is a lovely quiet village by the lake with scenic walks, a 200 kilometer bike trail and a nine hole links golf course all with super friendly people. Perfect for getting away and relaxing by the lake, There's only a small cafe and shop up the road so make sure you get all your supplies before heading down to Kingston.
  • We stayed in 9 airbnbs throughout our stay, and this was hands down the best. I cant seem to find any issues with the place. Totally recommended. Some highlights - fireplace, supremely equipped kitchen, super warm and welcoming hosts, board games, books, beach view location, bikes, 2 storey house, etc.

  • Wow, what an amazing place. We really enjoyed being 20+ minutes outside of Queenstown- close enough to easily drive-in but far enough away from the traffic, etc. This was the nicest place we stayed at during our entire time in New Zealand and the hosts were friendly and responsive, plus super fast and consistent wifi. The location was perfect and the views of the lake from the large windows were awesome - the lake is across the street and there is a nearby hike with more spectacular views of the landscape. We hope to return someday!

If you are looking for some quality time away from the demands of life or as you explore the area, this is the place to come! We have found all we needed and more, provided to such a high standard. Cosy semi self contained studio attached to a garage in beautiful Kingston 100 metres from the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Shared bathroom and laundry in the main house just one metre from the sleepout.
Situated in the heart of Kingston just 30 mintues away from Frankton in Queenstown is our cosy little studio for your comfort. The room includes wi-fi and tea and coffee. A small dry kitchenette is in the studio with fridge, microwave, two burner stove, air fryer, toaster and all utensils and corckery. Inside the house there is a laundry with a washer and dryer and a shared bathroom. We also have one super affectionate cat- Luke. He will try to tell you that we don't feed him. He's a liar and his size suggests otherwise.
Close to the shore of Lake Wakatipu and only a 10 minute walk to the start of the Around the Mountains cycle trail and the nearby Shirt Tail track hike leading up to a waterfall and the best views over Kingston.

  • Lovely little place in Kingston which is a great location for Queenstown. The apartment is just next to the house so easy access for the bathroom and washing facilities. The apartment has very stylish interior and we were very cosy there for our stay. They thoughtfully provided tea, coffee, bread, jam, milk and cereal which was a really nice touch. I would definitely recommend.

  • Adorable little room, loved the style. You are a bit away from Queenstown but we quite enjoyed the piece and quiet. Food wise either grab some food from Queenstown and use the small kitchen corner or eat out in Queenstown or on the Main Street. We where a bit disappointed with the restaurant at the Lake. Victoria gave us plenty of Tips in W what to do and we felt immediately at home. Really enjoyed it :)

    Sabine2019-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Beautifully decorated and cozy! There was a fan for when it was hot and a great stove heater for when it got chilly. The access to the house for the bathroom and washing facilities was so close it was practically ensuite. Two steps from door to door! The kitchenette was really well equipped and there is a large water tank to make up for the lack of plumbing. Not a problem with the washing facilities inside. Malcom and Tori were really friendly on introduction and left us to ourselves for the rest of our stay. The only trouble for us was the wifi being intermittent but they are installing an extender to improve this for their guests. Luke the cat is so adorable and friendly! Kingston is a lovely quiet getaway - perfect for nipping in and out of Queenstown - a beautiful drive. Tori recommended the Kingston Flyer for drinks and food - it did not disappoint! Great stay!

    Louisa2019-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Victorias and Malcoms Studio! It is super comfortable, nicely decorated, with everything you need some relaxing days. The cooking area has everything you need for cooking, and they kindly provided us some things for breakfast and wather wich were super nice to have. It is just 1 minute walk to the lake, and the view to the mountains is amaizing. The studio and bathroom (wich is in the main house) were very clean. Kingston is a very calm place to relax, go for some walk or hikes up to the mountains, or enjoy the evenings by the lake. Thanks for your hospitality Victoria and Malcom! :)

  • The best place to stay when basing yourself in Lumsden! Especially if fly fishing. 3 bedroom house with everything you could need if sight seeing but also if fishing the many beautiful trout rivers in the area. The house is beautiful and has real character. Rob the owner is very generous, helpful and quick with responses and the house is well kitted out with everything fly fisher folk need down to a fly tying kit and materials and even spare rod if yours breaks on one of the huge brown trout in the area. Also facilities to wash waders etc. including didymo spray. Washing machine and dryer. The wifi is excellent and beds very comfortable! The rate for what is provided is incredibly good value.

  • The reviews of Robs place were amazing so my expectations were high! I wasn’t disappointed!! The whole house is beautifully appointed!

  • Great spot. Has everything that you need and more. Fisherman’s paradise.

  • Lumsden Cottage is a great choice for a fishing trip and/or family vacation. The town is centrally located and charming, quiet neighborhood, and the house is immaculate, comfortable, and roomy. I especially appreciate the well-equipped kitchen with dishware and cookware allowing me to actually prepare meals -- have often rented more expensive places that lack this. Rob is responsive and helpful -- Highly recommend!

Relax in this newly renovated farm cottage situated in a picturesque, peaceful valley. The hosts run an environmentally award winning sheep farm, therefore the cottage is surrounded by farmland. You’re just a short distance away from a state highway so this location is an ideal central base for your sightseeing activities, close to fly fishing rivers/lakes and ski fields (1hr45min - Remarkables top). Your hosts at times may not be available to meet and greet you but a lock box is available.
You have the entire, self contained farm cottage to yourself. Freedom walking and mountain biking are available on this unique property. Please note availability is restricted during spring lambing and is weather dependent for safety reasons.
Traveling is tiring so the central location of this property makes it an ideal home away from home for multi night stays. The Caroline Cottage Retreat is centrally located and is a 1.05 hour drive to Te Anau, Milford Sound (Piopiotahi) 2.50 hrs, Queenstown 1.25 hrs, The Catlins 1.55 hrs, Invercargill 50 minutes and Bluff (gateway to Stewart Island) 1.15 hrs. Gore is a 40 minute drive. There is anglers access 3.5 km away at the end of our valley to the Oreti River.
  • Caroline Cottage is a delightful place to retreat to after several days on the road and we enjoyed everything about it. It is clean and well appointed with lots of great touches and lots of unexpected things like the cupboard full of essentials, the treats, everything. I highly recommend a stay there to all.

  • We absolutely loved our time at Sweet Caroline Cottage! It truly is a hidden gem in NZ. We arrived at sunset to a beautiful view of distant mountains and fields of sheep. While we didn’t get the chance to meet our host Kim, she left us some delicious chocolate cakes as a welcome. The house is so charming with great decor and cozy bedrooms. It was stocked with all of the essentials too. All we wish is that we could have stayed longer! Thank you for a great overnight experience in rural Caroline!

  • Great place to stay.

    Deborah2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • Caroline cottage was fantastic for us. We used it as a hub for 4 days to explore the southlands. It is in an amazingly bucolic setting that relaxes you the moment you park. And, both Kim and her husband Pete were so kind and went out of their way to make our stay perfect. The cottage itself was recently redone and everything is fresh and clean. It was perfect. We highly recommend a stay!

  • Kim is an amazing host. Very thoughtful ensuring we had staples on arrival and the cottage was filled with homely touches. The cottage itself has all the luxuries of home and is situated in a quiet valley with rolling green hills. Central to some of the best trout rivers and in close proximity to town. Looking forward to staying again 🙂

This is an isolated area, 4kms from the State highway 6. It is quiet and private. A real farm stay.
  • Really beautiful place it was. Really amazed by the fact that how these guys have transformed a shed into such a stylish looking space. Every little thing was given so much thought. You will find almost all the amenities inside the house. The location is a bit inside so it can be an issue if anyone will be reaching late night - other than that totally recommended.

  • We spent 1 night here during our travels of the South Island. We loved yurty and the whole property was gorgeous! Would definitely come back!

  • What can I say? My girlfriend and I loved staying here—the double bath tubs out front were a treat for sure. Got a few laughs out of the roosters in the AM also. To their credit, they woke us up at a reasonable hour :)

  • Loved staying on top of the mountain! Sunsets- even when it was raining- were simply breathtaking.

    Alison2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • Do you dream of sitting on the porch of your own little rustic hut at the top of a mountain and gazing across the valley over at the sun going down behind more mountains and the sky and everything around you turning a deep golden color? How about being able to sit in a hot bathtub under millions of stars? And then waking up to a golden sunrise and being able to heat up a hot cup of coffee and some oatmeal on the stove? This place was absolutely magical and I wouldn’t hesitate at all in staying here for a truly wonderful and deeply peace-filled and awe-filled stay! There’s a bit of a hike in (which in itself is incredible!) and the hut is rustic for sure, but that’s part of the charm and character of the place so as long as you are aware of this you’ll hopefully fall in love with it like I did, and never want to leave. ;)

    Chantel2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • A truely amazing experience. This Airbnb is located 40 mins from the ski hut and is exactly what we wanted. Be prepared for the hike you won't regret it! Do know that hikers sometime pass by. So be mindful of that :)

    Scotty2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • A unique experience. We have been to the hut with our 14 month old son and had great weather. Unfortunately it became cloudy sunset. Especially our son but also we really enjoyed the wonderful bath. The track has beautiful views and we made it in about 50 minutes.

    Luica2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Slate Hut was perfect for a nice stay on a beautiful ridge overlooking the mountains. The hike to the hut took about 30-40 minutes and the remainder of the loop took about 4-5hrs. The outdoor tub was perfect after a long day hiking, just make sure you turn on the burners about 1-2hrs before you want to use it as it takes awhile to heat up. The cabin itself is small but functional for 2-3 people with comfortable mattresses. Highly recommend!

    Connor2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • Couldn’t have been better. The hut was beautiful and equipped with everything we needed. Katie and Tom Were very helpful and quick to respond.

    Samuel2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • We had an absolutely wonderful, wonder-full experience! Thank you so much, Katie and Tom! We were so warm and cosy and very well fed – if you choose the luxury package, the linen and food hampers are fantastic! We've both grown up with outdoor baths, but we've never experienced one in such an incredible location. The walking/bike track to The Slate Hut is gentle (I walked it at 30 weeks pregnant), but I'd give yourself an hour to walk in unless you love a fast pace – we found ourselves stopping often along the walk to take it all in because the views are mind-blowing!

  • We had a warm welcome from host/new owner Melanie, who showed us to our very comfortable room. Enjoyed a lovely 2 night stay, and explored Lumsden and it's railway history.

    Geoff2019-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Great stopover on the way to and from Milford Sounds. Melanie was great at communicating and offering pointers on things to do and had no issues with us checking in late as we just picked up keys from the hotel down the street. Bathrooms are not en-suite but overall place was clean, safe, and comfortable. Would stay again! Thank you!!

  • A simple room only establishment with no host. You collect your key from a hotel across the road. We had an en suite double. It was clean and had tea and fresh coffee available. The shower was OK once the hot water tap had run for a while. Food at the Lumsden Hotel was good.
