  • My friends and I had a lovely relaxing weekend break here. The house is gorgeous and the views are just incredible. We ended up not even leaving the house (apart from to go in the hot tub!). Mark was very prompt at communicating with me and he allowed us to check out a bit later which was much appreciated as leaving the house with 7 children is never easy! Thank you!

I am taking no bookings up to the end of May. This may extend. Unique & beautiful BackBeach; Fisherman's cottage, self-contained, ground-floor. Stunning sunsets & moonlit waters and beautiful views up the River Teign to Dartmoor. Enjoy river, harbour & beach life, winter storm watching. Steps 2 Ship Inn, eateries, Shaldon Ferry, Arts Quarter. Town Center a few mins walk. Trains 10 mins walk. A welcome break after the Covid-19 storm has passed. Take care. Stay safe. Stay home for now.
Lots to do, but also a perfect place to do nothing here on the Back Beach in Teignmouth, my home town. More tranquil in the winter, and especially cosy with the wood-burner on winter nights. Great space to stay all year round, with books and games, TV, wifi. The picture window faces the beach and up the River Teign to Dartmoor with Haytor Rock on the horizon. For walkers, the Templar Way passes just outside - an 18 mile hike to Haytor. For artists and photographers the light and coastal/rural scenery from the house is gorgeous. River activity to watch from the house includes: harbour seal; swans/sea birds, cargo ships, rowers and amazing sunsets. The house has a 'Trot' a mooring for a small boat which you are free to use for your own boat. If planning to use the trot can you let me know at least 48 hours in advance. Perfect for visiting Exeter, or Dartmoor for a walk and a pub lunch. More tranquil in the autumn and winter months, but still plenty to do - local shops; Arts Quarter; pubs, restaurants; live music events; Pavilions Community Arts centre. The seawall and the front beach are great for storm watching, and surfers. You may also spot a fox on the cliff embankment, dolphins out at sea, and a bird of prey high above the cliff near the TEIGNMOUTH sign. Two car parks 2-3 minutes walk from my place. It can get busy so I now provide Free designated parking, a 3-minute drive (and a 5-minute straight walk back to my place) on the forecourt of a residential building. One of my favourite times of day: After the crowds have gone home (on a sunny day) looking out of my window, at the River Teign, with the lights of Shaldon Bridge on calm waters, and Venus rising in the night sky. Good for the heart. Kitchen provisions: tea, hot chocolate, 'real' and instant coffee, milk, marmite, local honey, jams, oats, homemade muesli; vinegars, olive oil, herbs, spices. And a Devon cream tea with scones from a local award winning bakery!
The back beach neighbourhood is unique. This is the River Teign beach area of Teignmouth, this small coastal town in Devon in the South West of England. There is a fishing community and a working quay close by and always something going. You will be in the heart of this friendly community. Festivals and events in throughout the year e.g. summer: Carnival week; regatta week; Ship Inn music August Bank Holidays and selected other dates. Winter includes Jazz festival November. At any time of the year the restaurants might be fully booked. During the winter months they may be open 3-4 days per week - if you want to eat in one of them book beforehand. Pubs serve pub food with no need to book e.g. the Ship Inn 2 doors down facing the river, with tables inside and outside; also the Crab Shack restaurant next door but one is popular, with tables inside and outside.
  • Great position helpful host, comfortable and well equipped kitchen.

  • Great little cosy home from home with a view in a beautiful area. Anne is a hospitable friendly host and provided a warm and well equipped flat including a welcoming cream tea. Definitely recommend.

  • What a gem! A stylish little flat with great views and a wonderful location. Anne was friendly and helpful and we loved all of the personal touches around the place.

    Sarah2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • My friend and I stayed in Anne's beautiful place in February. Although it was very wet and windy, we had an amazing time. Anne's place is cosy and comfortable. We lit fires and had baths every evening. Anne is a great host, from afternoon tea on arrival to bringing wood down for the fire. She was always available if we had any questions. Absolutely amazing host and wonderful place to stay. I'd definitely recommend staying. Thanks Anne!

    Rebekah2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Great residence and location. Modern and clean but also cosy and welcoming. Can't recommend highly enough. Anne (the host) was welcoming and super helpful with guides to the area.

    Tristan2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Anne's place is as described, it has everything you need and more. It is so cosy and warm with the central heating and the log burner. It is a few steps away from a pub and restaurant and a few more to the other shops. When we stayed in January it was so quiet. We loved parking up the car and walking, so many walks from the flat and lots of information supplied. We would like to return one day.

Luxurious and romantic, spacious holiday cottage in South Devon's rolling countryside. Excellent links to Exeter (15 miles) Dartmoor (8 miles) and the coast (4 miles) If you are looking for a quiet and romantic break, then really don’t look any further. If you’re looking for long country walks and great country pubs. We have them. Plus easy reach of the Dartmoor National Park, beautiful sandy beaches and Torquay marina.
Daisy Wheels has been converted from an old barn into a luxurious holiday cottage. The historical 'daisy wheels' have been preserved in the master bedroom and are Listed as Grade 2 with English Heritage. We have sensitively developed this barn into a spacious 1 bedroom cottage, complete with a fully fitted kitchen: integrated fridge (and freezer compartment), dishwasher, oven, microwave and a coffee machine with complimentary coffee capsules. The open plan kitchen/dining/sitting room has a woodburner with a first pack of complimentary logs and kindling for you to enjoy a cosy evening in. Don’t worry if you run out as you can purchase an extra bundle of logs from us for £3. Upstairs, the bespoke staircase rises to the huge master en suite bedroom with our humongous copper bath. Be patient when filling the bath, as it is so big- it can take 15 mins to fill! Whilst waiting, the Super King sized four poster is a perfect spot to sit and enjoy the country views. We have a dressing table, with hair drier and some fantastic bed side tables, which we made from some milk churns. The en suite shower room has a larger walk in shower with a 12 inch shower head and of course a copper basin which was once a jam making pot in France, before we adapted it be used as a basin. The house which dates back to the late 13th Century sits within just over 2 acres of private grounds, which our guests are more than welcome to walk over and enjoy the paddocks, cider orchard and rocky outcrops. The view from the top of the hill is fantastic.
We live in a very peaceful and quite rural hamlet in South Devon, yet with easy access to the road networks. Two very good pubs are within walking distances, The Royal Oak in 0.9 miles and The Elizabethan in 1.8 miles. There are plenty of enjoyable walks in the area, our favourite being along a stream, through the woodland to The Elizabethan pub.
  • Wonderful anniversary trip away! Would recommend to anyone looking for a private getaway with lovely scenic walks, friendly pubs and fresh air! The Elizabethan Pub was amazing (I recommend the Fish & Chips, the Mrs recommends the gin!) just a 35 min walk through the country. The cottage itself was so cozy & beautifully thought of throughout! Managed to get the log fire going & had about 8 baths in the 3 days we stayed! What. A. Tub! Thank you very much James & Helena :-)

    Taylor & Hannah2020-03-19T00:00:00Z
  • Had a lovely stay here, bath is amazing and huge! Lovely setting and the cottage is beautiful, it’s been done up very nicely. The only thing to be aware of is that the pubs are within walking distance (20 mins) but it’s down very narrow country lanes with high hedges. Probably fine on a nice summer evening but didn’t fancy it on a dark night! Food at the Elizabethan is fantastic. However it was a great place for a weekend away and we would be back, well worth a trip :)

    Katie2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay at James’s place. The air bnb looks beautiful and the location is ideal for using as a base to explore the surrounding area of Devon. Have recommended it to all my friends!

  • Beautiful accommodation in a beautiful location. Bring your wellies if you enjoy country walks. Make sure you make time for at least one bath - it’s fabulous!

  • What a perfect and relaxing valentines weekend. If you are contemplating booking this cottage for a romantic weekend, just do it. You will not regret it. I can not fault anything about our stay - it was perfect. The bath is absolutely massive! Thank you so much. We will be back! X

Recently featured on ‘The Culture Trip’ blog as one of the ‘TOP TEN FAIRYTALE CASTLES’ to stay in on Airbnb! Check out the Culture Trip website to read their amazing review on our home. Our home is a stunning section of a Victorian mansion house. With huge entertaining spaces and magnificent views out to sea. Enjoy time in luxurious surroundings in a beautiful part of the country. contact me for special deals as prices change depending on the time of the year. High season exceptions apply.
PLEASE NOTE: WE DO NOT ACCEPT 2 NIGHT BOOKINGS DURING HIGH SEASON, FROM JULY-SEPTEMBER. Totally unique 3 storey section of grand mansion with large enclosed gardens Lots of original features Open fire in the sitting room 2 large flat screen TVs bedrooms spread over three floors for extra privacy ideal for families and couples off road parking spaces lots of local activities: golf courses, fishing, walking, seaside activities etc. AMAZING views Famous former residents; Vivien Leigh & Laurence Olivier. recently renovated with new heating system & roof. Decorated for Christmas Large garden Views Full use of section of house Original roll top bath Close to the sea and Dartmoor Quaint English seaside town Lots of excellent restaurants Traditional pubs Easy access to Exeter and Plymouth Excellent public transport; we have a mainline railway station less than 1/2 mile down the road and there are also excellent bus links. Passenger ferry across to the fishing village of Shaldon (the oldest ferry route in the British Isles). MINIMUM OF 3 NIGHT STAY. All damage must be paid for. Any extra cleaning charges will also be taken from deposit. Double doors lead out to a fenced off area of a large garden. Lots of local shops in Teignmouth town along with pubs and restaurants and takeaways. There is a Waitrose supermarket in town and about 1 mile away is a Morrisons supermarket. Mainline train station is a five minute walk away from the property and there are lots of different bus routes from town that take you to Exeter, Plymouth and Dartmoor. The previous owners of this house had massively neglected it and let it fall into a terrible state of disrepair - it was pretty much derelict when we bought it. It had no staircase, water, electricity or gas supply. The roof let in approximately 40 litres of water every time it rained and the windows were all rotten. Over the last 9 years we have lovingly restored it - replaced the rotten windows; had a new roof (and insulation!) fitted, a new heating system has been installed and we have tastefully decorated with colours representative of the era it was built. We've given the house a little bit of dignity back. It's an on going project though so please take into consideration it's not a modern, double glazed property and you might feel a draught here and there!
We're a five minute walk from the beach and the town centre; as we're located on the top of a hill, we have the most magnificent views out to sea, estuary and the moors. It's an idyllic location and a beautiful house.
  • Rosalyn's Folly is a beautiful place with plenty of books, games, space and a ton of great kitchen equipment - although only 1 chopping board - which can be a problem if you're cooking for 8! Check-in process was great with a key lockbox, and communication with Rosalyn was a breeze. It is important to reiterate to future visitors that this is just one section of the whole castle shown in the photos and despite this having enough room to sleep maybe 9 people, there is only one bathroom (with an extra toilet downstairs - outside). This wasn't a problem for us, however, and it was worth it. The location is fantastic and the view from the kitchen and some bedrooms is incredibly beautiful since you're up a hill and can see the bay. It's located in a residential area, surrounded by houses and you can easily walk in to town. Overall, a great stay in a cool castle!

  • Beautiful house and everything you could need is thought of. Beverley is an outstanding host and made us feel very welcome. Hot tub is amazing and well worth the value. Will definitely be coming back!

    William2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing little gem of a place. The Tidelands Boathouse is everything described in its listing and more. Bev and Dave were great hosts and their property is a fantastic place for a short break by the water. We are so glad that we booked here to spend a Christmas away from the city. It is 100% a place we will consider coming back to in the future.

    Mark2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • Such an amazing couple of days!! Beverley and her husband greeted us upon our arrival and were so welcoming and friendly. They got us to sign some forms for the hot tub and kayaks and then showed us how to use both. I would definitely recommend spending the extra £ to use the hot tub as it wouldn’t have been the same without it. The fact that it was wood fired meant it was so peaceful and felt like we were really out in nature with a view over the river at night. There was also so many nice touches which we weren’t expecting - even the smallest things like our names written on a little slate heart. We weren’t expecting a Nespresso machine with pods to use too so that was a nice surprise. Unfortunately it rained the whole time we were there so we didn’t explore the local area as much as we’d have liked to, but we still got out on the kayaks and made the most of what we could. Would recommend anyone I know to stay here just because it’s such a nice location and somewhere to retreat. It may not be the cheapest place you’ll find but I’d say it was 100% worth the money as well as the extra for the hot tub.

    Suzie2019-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • From the moment we arrived everything was absolutely perfect, from the hosts themselves to the spotless accommodation provided. We can’t recommend the boathouse enough. Many thanks to Bev & Dave.

    Lee2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • We were absolutely delighted with our choice of Tidelands. The place was spotlessly clean, well appointed and with a number of little extras that made our stay most enjoyable. The location is amazing with panoramic views over the River Teign. There is an excellent ‘gastro pub’ within a 5 minute coastal walk. The host Beverley was extremely welcoming with excellent communication both before and during our stay. Highly recommended.

  • An amazing cottage and host. Attention to detail throughout. A very friendly village with a lovely country pub nearby. Will definitely return.

    Lisa2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Great host, local knowledge to share and a great quiet small setting next door to a pub. Lanes are narrow but that adds to the charm and in the winter the small fireplace is enjoyable as you unwind from travelling.

    Ian2020-01-14T00:00:00Z
  • We chose to stay at Gill's cottage on the strength of the many outstanding reviews she has received, and it's fair to say that all of the complements she has received are fully justified. The cottage is beautiful, with all mod cons and yet it feels wonderfully old - quite a rare combination. The village is lovely, and we particularly enjoyed the 10 minute walk down to the waterfront (next to the Coombe Cellars pub). The location, between sea and moor, is perfect - and Newton Abbott (with large supermarkets) is very close by. Last but not least, Gill is a fabulous host - welcoming, thoughtful, and generous. This really is an A++++ Airbnb.

Gill was a brilliant and helpful host, communicated with us very well and helped us with anything we needed. %100 recommend staying here and will definitely be back in the future.

  • Dave was very polite and accommodating at his home. His check in instructions were clear and concise with no hassles. He was not around for the check in however he did get in touch to see that everything was ok. The place is a 20 minute walk into the town downhill. Obviously the walk back is uphill and takes a little longer. He gave plenty of advice on where to go. The room was very clean with a lovely view. The kitchen was very clean and all facilities in there were available to use. He helped with my collection of a parcel that I had ordered off the Internet. If I am in the area again and Dave is happy I will definitely stay here. Thank you very much. Regards Paul

  • I’ve been using Airbnb for several years now and never had a bad experience. However, occasionally you have something that’s just beyond what you expect. It’s been like staying with friends. This is the second time I have stayed with a gay married couple. I have remained friends with the couple in Kettering & equally stay friends with Andy & Simon without a shadow of a doubt. I have been made to feel So welcome. If your in Torquay and need a place to just outside Barton stay here. You will be most welcome.

The Studio has an open plan lounge with kitchen/dining area and separate cosy ensuite double bedroom. I am only 6-7 mins walk from the bustling town center with restaurants, bars, and shops. The location is great for most things you may wish to do in the area, visiting the coast, Dartmoor, the Racecourse, Exeter / Plymouth. I am walking distance from bus and rail station, usually can collect you from the station. I can accommodate 1-2 more on the sofa bed or offer 2 sleeping separate for 2.
The Studio has its own front door. The kitchen has full facilities but should you wish to have breakfast prepared for you I may be able to oblige ( at extra cost).
The house is in a nice neighbourhood and walking back from town late at night the route is well lit and busy.
  • Gorgeous place, exactly what we hoped for and very reasonably priced! Martyn was extremely helpful and friendly and I would recommend this to anyone

During the current Pandemic, we will open for 'priority' staff at reduced rates only, thank you. A beautiful double bedroom with bay window looking out onto the patio courtyard. En suite shower, toilet and sink. Easy access from front door, and lockable room. 5 minute walk to the seafront, train station and the town. Bus Stop nearby. This is a double bed for 1 or 2 persons.
The bed is a comfortable double, with cotton bedding, anti allergy pillows. Clean towels. Hospitality tray with tea/coffee and biscuits. I provide a fresh continental breakfast in the room, consisting of fresh fruit juice and pastries. On prior arrangement I can make a cooked breakfast at an extra charge.
Teignmouth is a popular sea-side resort, hosting live music weekends throughout the summer. There are many modern cafe's, bars and restaurants, which serve a variety of tastes including vegan, dairy and gluten free options. The town has The Pavilions Theatre and Cinema complex, a Lido pool, and a long sandy blue beach award 2019. There is also an indoor swimming pool nearby. Teignmouth is within easy reach of Dartmoor national park, Exeter, Torbay English Riviera, and the rolling hills of The South Hams. There is a good cycle route, with challenging terrain, and popular cycling events such as the Moor to Sea. Teignmouth also has a new Park Run set up on Saturday mornings.
  • Comfortable bed and lovely room! Tea and coffee and nibbles in the room were much appreciated. Felt like our own space but nice to be welcomed in by Yvonne on arrival.

Lower deck has gone green we have decided it’s important to us to be as environmentally friendly as possible so we are now using ecover products to wash our bedding and clean the apartment we hope our guests will appreciate this . The lower deck is a newly converted ground floor apartment near Teignmouth's Vally park nature reserve and a short walk to Shaldon bridge or Teignmouth town centre and Beaches.
The Lower Deck has been beautifully appointed with a nautical theme running throughout . The apartment has a luxury bathroom with walk in shower that is ensuite to the bedroom but can also be accessed from the living room if family or friends are using the comfortable sofa bed in the living room. There is also a fully equipped kitchen in the apartment for all your self catering needs.
Coombevale road is a great place to be as there is a lovely nature reserve just up the road and you can easily walk to the back beach or shaldon within a few minutes
  • Great place, very clean and had everything we needed.

  • Lovely self contained apartment, comfortably furnished and comfortable bed

    Martin2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • A really nice, beautifully decorated apartment that the owners keep to a high standard. Whilst it may not be the most central location, this is more than made up for by the standard of the accommodation. It is literally a 14 minute walk to everything you need or a 5 minute drive. Emma is quick to respond and has plenty of information to hand regarding the area. We would highly recommend this apartment.

    Zoe2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • The Lower Deck is a very stylish and spotless apartment in a very good location to access Teignmouth town centre and see front - approx 10 min walk. All the decor, fittings and appliances are relatively new and in good working order and Emma was in good communication for all requirements. Well worth a stay. We really enjoyed our stay there

    Julian2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Emma hosts a beautiful, stylish apartment with sparkling clean amenities just a 15 minute walk from teignmouth town centre. It’s warm and cosy and would definitely be staying here again should we be back in the area!

Bright, sunny living space located in the heart of Devonshire countryside and near a Golf course. Three towns including Torquay and Totnes within ten minutes drive for something more metropolitan or two villages with Pubs and amenities a reasonable walk away. Panoramic views of fields and moorland can be viewed from the large garden full of wildlife and flowers. Guests are left largely to their own devices but advice and local information is always available.
Your room has a king size double bed which may be converted to singles, two wardrobes a chest of drawers a chair and desk and tea/coffee making facilities
There is a lovely Golf course, 2 or 3 good Pubs and a nice coffee shop in the nearest Village. The beautiful South Devon coast is a short drive away.

    Christine2019-08-31T00:00:00Z

    Rebecca2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • We arrived at jackies, and never felt so welcome in a place. The bedroom is exactly what we were after and a great host to go with it makes it even better. Her husband I might add was also very helpful. Highly recommend this accommodation to anyone visiting Torquay and the surrounding areas. Nice little touches to the room made it special and thoughtful. Definitely would go again ☺️

Gorgeous, quiet self contained studio apartment in the heart of this beautiful village on the Teign estuary. Very close to the sea and the moors, wonderful walking and a great centre from which to explore the endless glories of South Devon and beyond.
Taplow Studio ...things to do in the area. ( if phone numbers don't appear in the listing for security reasons let us know and we can email you ) There are many options depending on your interests and of course the seasons. Here is our personal selection: BEACHES For a full list of beaches in the area see: http://www.torbay.gov.uk/index/yourbay/beaches/beachesintorbay.htm Here are a few of our favourites: Maidencombe (2.6 miles)– small sheltered pebbly cove with small ice cream hut. Not usable at high tide. Quite a lot of steps down to it. Just off the coast road after Stokeinteignhead, direction Torquay. Ness (tunnel) Beach – in Shaldon (2 miles). Totally unspoilt red sand bay which is good for swimming. Reached through the smuggler’s tunnel and down some steps. Note there are no facilities on the beach itself so take drinks/food with you although there is a small shop selling ice cream, buckets and spades etc by the entrance to the tunnel. WCs are also at the entrance. The Ness pub is nearby for food and drinks and the Ode café serves excellent coffee, sandwiches etc. Park in the large Ness Public Car Park - TQ14 0HP Shaldon (River) beach (2 miles) – Lots of boating activity. Local shops, pubs & fish and chip shop easily accessible. Take the small passenger ferry across the estuary to Teignmouth – much more fun (and probably quicker) than driving! Teignmouth beach (3.5 miles) – long stretch of beach perfect for sandcastles and swimming. There is a long promenade alongside the beach which is perfect for a seafront walk at high tide. Crazy golf, a pier with arcades and other seaside activities. Dawlish Warren Beach http://www.dawlishwarren.com A lovely Blue Flag beach with 2 very separate characters. By the car park you will find a busy buckets and spades beach by several shops, amusement arcades, cafes and public loos. Walk away from the crowds (shops etc on your left) and you will find yourself in a nature reserve and bird sanctuary with sand dunes – uncrowded even in peak summer. We love to walk here in winter. Broadsands Beach (12 miles) – just south of Paignton. In a lovely rural setting the red sand beach is very safe for bathing and has good facilities including a shop, loos, cafe and very large car park. There is a lovely 3 ½ mile circular walk from the beach taking in Elberry Cove and Churston. Just south of Dartmouth, Blackpool Sands (20 miles) is a beautiful pebble beach with great facilities including a shop and restaurant right on the beach – it can get busy and you will need to check restaurant opening hours and book if you would like dinner: Venus Slapton Sands/Torcross (25 miles). Am amazing spit of land with a nature reserve on one side and a long sweeping pebble beach on the other. There is a lot of history associated with the beach as it was used by the Allied Forces in World War II – there are tanks still there to prove it! Further afield there are beautiful golden sand beaches at Bantham (30 miles) which is a good surfing beach and right next door is Bigbury Bay which is in an area of outstanding natural beauty and is approached by the River Avon Estuary. There are loos available but not much else although Burgh Island is directly opposite and can be reached across a spit of sand at low tide or sea tractor when the tide is in. On the island here is a great little 14th century pub called The Pilchard Inn – it gets very busy and is quite basic but great atmosphere and wonderful views if you sit outside or get a window seat. Very cosy in winter. WATER BASED ACTIVITIES For Sailing, Windsurfing, Kayaking, Stand up paddleboards etc with instruction, SeaSports Southwest in Teignmouth are highly recommended: http://www.seasports-sw.com/ - Tel: 01626 772555 There is also Sea Kayak in Dartmouth: Boat and fishing trips – available from the back beach at Teignmouth, in Torquay and Totnes (14.5 miles) Swimming pools – The Riviera centre in Torquay (7.5 miles) is in-door with flumes etc. There is an outdoor lido in Teignmouth (3.5 miles) GOLF There are many golf courses in the area: http://www.top100golfcourses.co.uk/htmlsite/area.asp?id=193 The closest are at Shaldon, Teignmouth and Torquay all of which have fantastic views. There is Crazy Golf in Teignmouth! CYCLING Many people cycle directly from the village but obviously the roads around and about are narrow. Dartmoor has many beautiful cycling options with off road routes: http://www.dartmoor.gov.uk/visiting/vi-enjoyingdartmoor/cycling and there is also beautiful Haldon Hill on the way to Exeter for bike hire and off road cycle trails for all levels: http://www.forestcyclehire.co.uk/ A great addition to our cycling options is the newly completed Exe Trail – the website has maps to download: http://www.exetrail.co.uk/. It is a beautiful flat route alongside the river. WALKING There are numerous walks directly from the village (details in Home House) and here are some additional very good walks further afield: http://www.devon.gov.uk/accessibletrailsindevon.pdf http://www.southwestcoastpath.com/walksdb/printable-walk/514/ http://www.devon.gov.uk/templerwayleaflet.pdf http://www.devon.gov.uk/devon_circular_walks2.pdf - includes Stover Park http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/explore/walks-trails/greenway-walk/ http://www.southwestcoastpath.com/walksdb/printable-walk/410/ - Dittisham/Greenway http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/uploads/walks/38_TotnesDartington_updated_May2011.pdf ANIMALS/ZOOS etc There is a small zoo in Shaldon (lots of monkeys!) and a big zoo in Paignton (10 miles) which warrants a whole day trip. Living Coasts by the harbour in Torquay has a lot of penguins and an aquarium. Further afield there is the Dartmoor Zoological Park (23 miles) which is the subject of the book and film ‘We Bought a Zoo’ (we haven’t yet spotted Scarlett Johansson!): http://www.dartmoorzoo.org.uk. There is also the UK’s largest aquarium in Plymouth (34 miles): http://www.national-aquarium.co. BOATS AND STEAM TRAINS There are numerous options to travel along beautiful and interesting routes by steam train and boat: http://www.dartmouthrailriver.co.uk/ - our closest point of departure is by the harbour in Torquay and Totnes is another good alternative. There is also a full size replica of the Golden Hind in Brixham (14 miles): http://goldenhind.co.uk/ ARTS AND CRAFTS There are a lot of ‘pop up’ arts events in the area and Dartmouth (17 miles) in particular has a lot of galleries selling high quality art by local as well as nationally acclaimed artists. In Bovey Tracy (9.5 miles) there is The Devon Guild of Craftsmen which exhibits contemporary arts and crafts in a lovely setting with cafe. GARDENS/HOUSES There are lots of lovely gardens open to the public in the area – some are National Trust and others privately owned: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/local-to-you/south-west/things-to-see-and-do/south-devon/ and http://www.heartofdevon.com/things-to-do/history-and-heritage/gardens . Our personal favourite (en route to Dartmouth) is Coleton Fishacre (16 miles) which has a 1920’s house and beautiful views down the garden towards the sea. We also like Castle Drogo (21 miles) mainly for the beautiful walk down in to the valley and along the river: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/castle-drogo/things-to-see-and-do/view-page/item544981/ . We haven’t yet visited the house as it has been closed for restoration. Castle Drogo is close to Chagford (20 miles) a pretty little town on the north east edge of Dartmoor. Another special place to visit is Greenway, Agatha Christie’s home and garden: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/greenway/ - there is very limited parking available which has to be booked in advance and we have found the best way to visit is to drive to Dittisham (20 miles) which is a very picturesque village on the River Dart (great views from The Ferry Boat Inn) and then take the foot passenger ferry across the river which leads to the lower slopes of the garden. In low season you have to ring a bell for the ferry! Further afield is The Eden Project which requires no introduction and is definitely worth the trip (68 miles) – there is masses to see and do. It’s best to dress in layers on cooler days because the heat of the tropical glass domes is pretty intense and you will need to strip off outer clothing! HORSE RACING We are lucky to have horse racing on our doorstep in Newton Abbot which is home to one of the UK’s leading summer jumps racecourses: http://www.newtonabbotracing.com/ . Not that much further away (12 miles) is Exeter’s racecourse: http://exeter.thejockeyclub.co.uk/ which is situated on the top of Haldon Hill, this side of Exeter. MUSEUMS There are a number of small museums dotted around the various towns in the area. By far the best in our experience is the award winning Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery in Exeter (19 miles). It is relatively small for a city museum but perfectly formed – a great destination for a wet day. THEATRES The closest theatre is The Princess Theatre in Torquay – there is a varied timetable of events and sometimes they have real gems such as ‘East is East’ which is touring with all of the original West End cast (13th – 18th July 2015): https://www.ents24.com/torquay-events/princess-theatre . Exeter has the Northcott Theatre which has an interesting and varied programme and has quite a lot of child friendly productions: http://www.exeternorthcott.co.uk/whats-on. The Royal Theatre in Plymouth is” the largest and best attended regional producing theatre in the UK and the leading promoter of theatre in the South West” according to the Arts council. It has very high standard productions – many are pre or post West End: http://www.theatreroyal.com/whats-on/list CINEMAS The closest cinema is The Alexandra in Newton Abbot (small screens and very cheap) and the Apollo Multiplex in Paignton. Exeter has an Odeon and Vue. There is also the rather wonderful Exeter Picture House which is a quirky small cinema where you can grab an excellent pizza before the film and take your glass of beer/wine with you when the film starts. We also now have the newly opened Pavillions on the front at Teignmouth. A wide variety of events there including cinema , live music as well as a lovely coffee and drinks bar overlooking the sea. LOCAL PUBS The Wild Goose – Really excellent food and a selection of local beers. Booking recommended. ( we are not just saying that because its our local !) 01626 872241 Coombe Cellars – off the lane to Shaldon (12 minute walk from the house – take a torch if coming back late). Food in both restaurant and bar snacks. Lovely views over the estuary – usually have to book at weekends and definitely in peak season. Tel: 01626 872423 Church House Inn in Stokeinteignhead (1 mile walk) – similar to The Wild Goose in feel and serving good pub food. Has free wi-fi. The Ness – just off the large car park in Shaldon with great views overlooking the estuary mouth. Serves good pub food – gets very busy inside. Tel: 01626 873480 Thatched Tavern – on the lane down to Maidencombe Beach. Friendly welcome, pretty garden and good food bought from local suppliers. Sometimes has live music. Tel: 01803 329155 Cary Arms in Babbacombe – very steep descent down (park in public car park at the bottom of the hill) good food and lovely views overlooking the bay. Beautiful outside terraces for the summer. Sammy the seal is a regular visitor off the pier and we have also seen dolphins. Gets busy – Tel: 01803 327110 to book a table. Church House Inn in Marldon. Voted the ’Best Country Pub’ in Devon by Devon Life Magazine – great food – new menu on the blackboard every day, very cosy and lovely terraced garden. Tel: 01803 558279. Bickley Mill – stylish friendly country pub in Stoneycombe which is about 20 minutes drive from the house (you will see the sign on the right hand side of the road just after the Pen Inn/Sainsburys roundabout direction Torquay). Tel: 01803 873201 The Ring of Bells in North Bovey: http://ringofbells.net/ - on Dartmoor this is a great pub with an excellent menu which changes regularly. There are wonderful walks from the pub which can be downloaded in advance from the website. RESTAURANTS/CAFES Lemon Jelli Newton Abbot. Probably the best coffee in Devon...and good reasonably priced bistro food. On the corner on the right on the main street in Newton Abbot just after Argos. http:www.lemonjellii. Ode in Shaldon – small and quite formal, local sourcing and excellent reviews in national newspapers. Need to book: 01626 873977. Additionally the Ode Café is just by the main car park in Shaldon – open 10 – 7 p.m. apart from Tuesday when closed. The Clipper in Shaldon – wonderful location with outside seating on the seafront or balcony and lovely seaside feel inside. Would recommend as a great place to have cooked breakfast and for coffee and cakes but the restaurant food is a bit basic. Naz in Newton Abbot and Teignmouth – excellent Indian restaurant. Tuesday evening in Newton Abbot is buffet night which offers excellent value for money and a good choice of dishes (£12 per head). Will also deliver takeaway for free – Tel: 01626 334 837 Pinto Thai in Newton Abbot – our very fussy friends have just discovered this restaurant but we haven’t tried it yet. Apparently it’s very good and they also have a takeaway menu. 131 Queen Street. Tel: 01626 337823 The Crab Shack – well reviewed small seafood restaurant on the back beach in Teignmouth serving freshly caught fish and seafood. Need to book: Tel: 01626 777956 Twenty Six on Regent Street in Teignmouth is a very good French bistro style cafe/restaurant. Lovely for breakfast and coffee & cake and seriously good food for lunch – only rarely serves dinner. You might need to book in high season: 01626 879000 RockFish Seafood in Torquay, Dartmouth and Brixham– very casual and laid back, serving excellent fish and seafood bought daily from the market in Brixham. Also have a takeaway option. On the South Embankment overlooking the water in Dartmouth, on Victoria Parade (by the harbour) in Torquay and above the fish market on the harbour in Brixham. http://www.therockfish.co.uk/ The Seahorse in Dartmouth owned by Mitch Tonks (who also owns Rockfish) – this is a fine dining experience. Smart bistro serving sophisticated fish and seafood menu. Quite expensive. Need to book: 01803 835147 Café Alf Resco on Lower Street in Dartmouth is also great for good locally sourced food and lots of music events including Jazz on Sunday mornings. Just turn up. The Cridford Inn in Trusham, a little village north of Newton Abbot off the A380 – serves superb food, either in the bar or restaurant (we prefer the bar for atmosphere). Main courses in the bar vary from £8.50 - £15.00 with daily specials and the restaurant serves a 2 or 3 course menu varying in price from £23.50 - £28.50. Worth the adventure of finding it! Need to book: 01626 853694 The Riverford Field Kitchen is the restaurant of Riverford Organic Vegetables situated in the middle of the countryside near to Buckfastleigh – make sure you take directions! (www.riverford.co.uk/restaurant). Superb food served as a set menu and shared table ...magic !Essential to book: 01803 762074. The Oyster Shack in Bigbury – if you like fish and seafood and enjoy very unpretentious restaurants then The Oyster Shack is worth a visit. The Jack in the Green in Rockbeare near Exeter – close to the M5 so call in for a treat on your way here or way back home or after a day in Exeter. Truly excellent food and voted one of the UK’s top 100 restaurants. Essential to book: 01404 822240. Bill’s in Exeter – good food in casual fun surroundings where you can also buy produce such as chutneys, jams, olive oil etc. In the middle of Exeter on Gandy Street, take a chance and drop in or book: 01392 259227. FISH AND CHIPS Jacksons on the left hand side in the main street of Newton abbot. Excellent food Hanbury’s is an award winning fish and chip shop in Princes Street, Babbacombe – voted one of the Top 20 in the UK by The Times. Expect long queues but you can phone ahead: 01803 329928. Also great fish and chips in Shaldon ..sit on the beach and eat them ! CATERING SHOPS The nearest local shop is in Stokeinteignhead where newspapers, milk, bread and lots more are available. Turn left out of the drive and follow the road for about a mile - the shop is in the village centre. Open 9 – 5 p.m. Mon – Fri but mornings only over the weekend. The nearest supermarket and petrol is Sainsbury’s in Newton Abbot – open until 10 p.m. every day except Sunday. There is also a 24 hour Asda and 24 hour Tesco in Newton Abbot and a Waitrose in Teignmouth. There is a good fresh fish shop, jacksons, in Newton Abbot and on the back beach in Teignmouth. The fresh fish stall in Asda is a locally owned concession and is also very good. There is a really good butcher – Orsman’s – in Shaldon. Newton Abbot has most high street shops that you might need including Boots, WH Smith, a small M&S and Austins department store. Torquay is bigger with a couple of department stores. Exeter has great shopping including most high street shops and department stores – driving in to Exeter at peak times can be a bit busy but the Park & Ride facility is excellent. Totnes has lovely more individual shopping almost all based along the High Street which runs up the hill. On the outskirts of Totnes is the Dartington Shopping Centre with some lovely craft shops as well as clothing, jewellery and a good farm shop. Ashburton on the edge of Dartmoor is also lovely for individual shops – lots of antiques. Topsham on the Exe Estuary is also very pretty with a good selection of shops, cafés and pubs – nearby Darts Farm started off as a farm shop but is now huge with a great selection of food and non-food goodies to buy and it also has an excellent café.
  • Liz was a wonderful host and the place was in a fantastic location, felt like a home away from home. Lots to do nearby and the local pub was a real gem. Would definitely come back again!

    Rebecca2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Liz is a very welcoming and accommodating host! We absolutely loved our stay; the cottage was so homely. This is in a perfect location for Dartmoor, for beaches and for exploring Newton Abbot and Exeter. We would love to return again in the future.

  • The barn is a great spot for exploring the local area, and Liz is a brilliant host whose suggestions for places to visit were just what we needed! The barn itself is extremely cosy, with a lovely aspect on to the village and thatched roofs. It's a 5 minute walk to the local pub, where the food is exceptional, and the hospitality is as warm as the many fires they have blazing. Combeinteignhead is a great little village to explore, and to wander down to the Teign itself. We stayed with a small dog, who loved getting muddy and exploring the area. Many sniffs! If you're not a fan of spiders, I'd give it a miss, but they didn't trouble us so we didn't trouble them (just relocated a couple). The bed is very comfortable, and it was genuinely hard to get up each day rather than just laze about! We forgot to get provisions en route, arriving late on a Saturday so had nothing for Sunday breakfast - Jane was a life saver in lending us some basics.

    Paul2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful property in a lovely little village, a short walk from two great pubs and less than half an hour's drive from all sorts of interesting places (Totnes and Haytor being our two favourites). We spent a week here and simply worked our way through Liz's recommendations. Being the start of autumn, the weather was changeable but the studio was never cold and the wood-burning stove was great to come back to.

    Jacob2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • I would definitely stay here again. Liz is such a wonderful host, thoughtful , helpful and very personable. The log burning stove and abundance of logs made my stay cosy when the weather wasn’t great - gorgeous conservatory to relax in and a fully equipped kitchen. Very short drive to the nearest town and a short walk to the estuary for views of Teignmouth.

    Tanya2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Nice cottage with very well equipped kitchen in a cute little village with great pub!

  • Plenty of space, easy to find, central to great area and a lovely host.

    Karen2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • Great little cottage in a lovely area. Great pubs (wild goose inn and Coombe cellars) within walking distance and Liz was very accommodating with check-in times etc. Only negative was maybe a few too many spiders for our liking!

I think people will like staying here because it is homely, it’s quiet and peaceful. There is a pretty garden with lots of places to sit and take in the scenery. Weather permitting you could have tea or lunch in the garden Because the hosts /we both have a keen interest in arts and crafts, we can offer workshop/studio time at a price, depending on the activity We like to meet people and we are very hospitable. Please note we also have a single room available
Bishopsteignton is a small quaint peaceful village with easy access to surrounding areas. It is close to Teignmouth and Shaldon and overlooks the Teign estuary . The village is built on a hill, it has a post office, pharmacy and a small family run shop. There is a hotel in the village The Cockhaven Arms, they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and they have a beer garden Old Walls Vineyards restaurant is a short walk away - ideal for breakfast or lunch and afternoon tea, fabulous view. There is an easy walk down to the river Teign when the tide is low Red Rock Brewery nestles in the The hills just outside Bishopsteignton, they have a bar where they serve traditional casks real ale. They have quizzes and open mike sessions as well.
  • Val’s place was great value for money and exactly what we needed for our overnight stay, would definitely recommend. Val is lovely, the room is lovely and would like to come back and visit the area properly when more time on our hands :) thank you again x

  • This is our third time staying with Val and we love how easy it is to get to and the village itself is a gem of a place! Lovely listening to the Church bells and there's a lovely vineyard a 5 minute walk away which does some amazing food (and wine!) Outstanding hospitality and it feels like a home from home. Beautiful continental breakfast, wish I could wake up to it every morning. See you again soon!

    Jessica2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • Val's place is a pleasant surprise - it looks fairly small from the road but opens out very nicely once inside. Val and Elaine's hospitality is exceptional and the room and ensuite are great. Very nice view from the window too and a lovely atmosphere in the village.

    Mike2020-01-09T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful home on top of a hill with gorgeous views over the quaint little village. I had a very comfortable night there and felt that I would have become great friends with the hosts had I stayed longer. I fully recommend a visit. A lovely experience :-)

    Clare2019-11-08T00:00:00Z
  • If you are looking for somewhere to stay that is quiet, peaceful and comfortable, but still very well located I would recommend you to stop looking and stay here. Val and Elaine are super nice and will make you feel welcome and comfortable at their house. The room is very comfortable, with a great bed, bathroom, wardrobe and nice river views. There is a good pub and restaurant in the small village and Teignmouth and Shaldon are very close and great to explore, with very nice restaurants, bars and seafront. Exeter is just 30 minutes driving. Highly recommended!

Peaceful, well presented, enjoyed saying hello to the animals every morning, and we where just a short walk from the centre of the village (shaldon), where you could also get a foot ferry over to Teignmouth, plenty to see and do in the area. Hanna greeted us with a friendly smile on arrival, and was often about the farm to ask about local places to eat etc.

This cottage is set right by the waters edge of the Teign estuary with neighbours either side. It is a bird watchers paradise and is just a short 2 minute walk to the local pub that serves food all day. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, rolling Devon hills and beaches 10 minutes in the car it is the prefect place to relax
This cottage is set in a unique location ideal for anyone who wants to be surrounded by birdlife, likes fishing, walking or wants to indulge in windsurfing or kayaking as it all goes on right in front of the cottage. The cottage living area is all open plan. The front of the cottage has glass sliding doors and windows to make the most of the spectacular views. It also has a woodburner and table for 4 and a sofa with tv and excellent free wifi. In the kitchen area there is an Esse electric cooker similar to an Aga and a dishwasher. The bathroom has a freestanding bath with a hand shower unit for washing hair. Bedroom one has two windows that look out towards the estuary and a comfortable large double with Eygptian cotton bedding. Bedroom two has two twins and it has access to a raised outside area that is enclosed and private and looks out over the estuary once again. There is a back garden too with flowers and a bench. From here you can walk through the neighbours land to beautiful walks or along the foreshore for the same. There are two pubs, one 2 minutes walk away and one 20 minutes walk away. Parking is in the nearest pubs car park so if you have difficulty walking this may not be suitable for you as you have to walk over uneven ground for a couple of minutes. Shaldon beach is 10 minutes in the car one way with several cafes and a small zoo plus a smugglers tunnel that leads to a sandy cove backed by cliffs or Maidencombe is 10 minutes the other direction and has a pub in the village plus a cafe at the beach, lots of steps to get to the beach here.
Offers so many things, walking on Dartmoor, visiting beaches, gourmet restaurants and local traditional pubs. Fishing, kayaking, sailing, swimming, windsurfing and paddle boarding are all indulged in on the estuary. At low tide you will see birds galore.

  • An astonishing place, right on the water's edge. Cosy, friendly, and with loads of lovely local places to explore. Can't recommend enough, there's even a boat to go out on. Full marks!

  • Lovely space, which is great for relaxing in. We particularly enjoyed feeding the swans and will be back to try out the boat. It’s definitely a home away from home!

    Helen2018-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is located on truly breathtaking spot right on the river Teign. The only advice I have for people staying there is get there during daylight so you can get your bearings. Access is either around the back via a field or for the adventurous - along the river bed when the tide is out (can be slippery and treacherous). After the first time, navigating your way in the dark is a breeze. It's right by the Coombe Cellars pub (which I would not advise for foodies, they talk the talk but definitely cannot deliver) which is perfectly located for pints right on the river. Judy is a fantastic and thoughtful host. We are already planning our next stay.

A fantastic self contained one bedroom apartment, a stones throw from the beach and all the amenities, pubs and restaurants that beautiful Shaldon has to offer. Situated at the heart of the village, this property provides lovely living, dining and sleeping space with a well apointed bijou bathroom and a well equipped kitchen. A wonderful location in which to enjoy the coast and stunning countryside all year round with a log burner in the lounge providing for a cosy, romantic winter hideaway.
The property is accessed via an external stone staircase which leads to a modern stable style front door from which you enter the property into the kitchen. The kitchen features a fridge, oven and plenty of storage and is well equipped for eager cooks. The comfortable and pretty double bedroom has hanging space as well as a small wardrobe with drawers ensuring plenty of space to unpack. The bedroom has space to accommodate a travel cot (not provided). The lounge features a log burning stove for cooler evenings (wood provided during winter months), cosy sofas and a dining table and chairs. The beach in shaldon is a great place for a sunny day. The village has a great range of food and drink venues, many of which feature live music. Further up the road on the headland you will find another beach which is accessed through a smugglers tunnel! Just go past the ness pub and past the small Zoo to find the tunnel. The coastal path can be picked up from Shaldon by the Zoo – it is a beautiful scenic path but it is very steep in places. Teignmouth has all your typical English seaside resort activities and amusements and there is a walk along the sea wall with the trains running by on one side and the sea on the other. Dartmoor is only 30/45 minutes away. The cream teas at Badgers Holt tea rooms at Dart Meet are to die for – and huge!

  • Louise was a friendly and brilliant host. I arrived late in the evening and left early in the morning and was looked after much better than I was expecting for a quick stop over. The room has lots of lovely touches - tea, mini toiletries etc and was sparkly clean. I had access to my own bathroom which I was able to have a bubble bath in with lovely toiletries provided - amazing after a long day. Louise even whipped up delicious avacado and eggs in the morning before I set off. I couldn't recommend more highly. It turns out Louise is a reflexology practitioner - revealed by the associated books on the room's book shelves. I was gutted I wasn't staying long enough to see if she could squeeze me in!

  • Louise was very friendly, warm and welcoming. I definitely recommend you stay at her place. She's an awesome lady! PLUS, the house is close to the city's center and train station and I also got a lovely homemade English breakfast :-)

  • Very nice, clean, quiet, and central place, and lovely people! Thank you, Louise, for the kindness of giving supper when I arrived late and could not find a nearby place to eat at as it was Sunday night. The cooked English breakfast was delicious. Offering a selection of Continental and Cooked breakfasts was also very kind and considerate of the host. Thank you.

My place is close to Teignmouth beach, pier, many lovely shops, galleries, pubs, restaurants & diving centre. You’ll love my place because of the cosy, relaxing feel and proximity to the beach & to the famed Crab Shack eaterie & the best fish & chip shop in town. You can easily travel to Torquay & Exeter by car or train; the station is a 6 minute walk away. There are 2 double bedrooms & a modern downstairs bathroom, small kitchen & pretty outdoor space with potted plants.Alas no free parking.
Tucked away in a quiet lane a few minutes walk from the main thoroughfare & shops (No direct vehicular access)
The house is in the Artists Quarter of Teignmouth.

  • This is a lovely little cottage in a great central location, shops just round the corner and the beach barely 10 min walk away. Modern kitchen and bathroom has everything you need. And although there is no free parking the house is right next to a spacious car park that is only £3.80 for 24 hours. I would definitely recommend this place, couldn't fault it!
