Places to stay in Elk City

Places to stay in Elk City
A nice, cozy cabin in secluded location, just a few hundred yards from Freedom River Adventures. Get your favorite book, open the back door, and find true peace among the solitude of nature and the babbling brook behind the blue cabin.
You have the entire cabin, a small brook is just out the back door and American River is 100 yards out the front door. Property borders Public Land, totally secluded on 3 sides. You can literally walk out the back door and walk for about 70 miles before you will cross a paved road.
Elk City is a very small town 2 miles away. It has a general store where you can get most grocery’s, everything from steaks to fresh produce to nails and hardware supply’s. We have a hot springs about 20 miles away. Basically any outdoor recreational activity you are interested in from gold prospecting to mountain biking to fishing and hunting.
  • Gary’s cabins are well kept and provide a great private escape just outside of town. Cant beat the wood heat. Gary is close by and very quick to respond if you have any needs.

  • If you are going to Elk city the best place to stay is Gary's place and he is a great host making you feel at home and he is very knowledgeable of the surrounding area and there is easy access to the National Forest. Will definitely be staying with Gary the next time in Elk city.

  • Beautiful rustic cabin In the woods. It is 2 1/2 miles from Elk City, down a gravel Road. No WiFi or cell Service which was nice and relaxing. Gary is very nice and helpful! Will return!

  • Gary’s place is in a great location and is well furnished with everything you need from just relaxing or cooking a big meal. The beds are comfortable. The views are beautiful. And sitting on the front porch and watching the birds is very relaxing. You can ride off road vehicles for miles right from the front door.

Remote Idaho cabin, outdoor paradise, comfortable, warm and cozy. Satellite TV and internet, phone. No cell service at the house, possible connection in town. See additional info at www.Freedomriveradventures.com.
Just about any outdoor recreational adventure is available from Freedom River. From hunting and fishing to mountain biking to mushroom hunting, to gold prospecting, to simply enjoying the beauty of the wilderness.
We are in a fairly remote location. There are only about 5 full time residents in this area of town. On weekends in summer there is limited ATV traffic on the road in front. In winter, you might not see another car for 3 or 4 days. Medical services are over an hour away, so plan accordingly.
  • Definitely recommend staying at one of Gary’s places. He’s a great host and his cabins are clean and cozy. My family looks forward to our stay here every year.

    Morgan2019-11-21T00:00:00Z
  • Gary met us at arrival, so check in was a breeze. We had everything we needed at the 'Brown' cabin! During our late September stay, abnormal early snowfall hit the area. We were warm and dry in the cabin, fireplace with plenty of wood, and it just added to the beauty and peacefulness of the location. Wildlife right on the property. 2 miles from town, so remote enough to feel 'off the grid', yet close enough to services. Much to see in the area, and Gary knows where everything is! Gracious host who checked in on us occasionally to make sure we had everything we needed. We'll be back!

    Gordon2019-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • It's quiet, clean, Gary is great

    James2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is spacious, has a nice gas grill, and is in a remote and quiet location. Gary is a great source of information on the area and wildlife.

    Marilyn2019-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin allowed us civilization and comforts on the edge of wilderness. It was a perfect location to gather with family and partake of the nearby hot springs as well as fishing and hiking. Even the weather cooperated! The kitchen and outdoor grill allowed us to enjoy my sister-in-law's culinary prowess. The back porch picnic table was a great place to serve up her meals or just to enjoy the evening. All in all, it was a great place to hang out.

    Gayle2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I really enjoyed the four days that we stayed at Gary's cabin. It was just like we hoped it would be, very comfortable and relaxing. Gary is very friendly and accommodating, I enjoyed my visits with him. We rode our side x side from the cabin all the way to Montana and back on the Magruder Road. It was a blast!

    Paul2019-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • This is a nice size cabin with a wonderful host. It has everything you could possibly imagine right in the middle of the woods. It is comfortable and dry and we had a lot of fun.

    Jennifer2019-06-09T00:00:00Z
  • Great space with wood heat. Hard to beat a nice wood fire when relaxing after a long day hiking around. All the amenities needed for a short or long stay.

  • "Tiny House Mountain Cabin" exactly describes this little haven up in the mountains. Our experience was wonderful. The cabin was comfortable; we could open up the windows and get fresh daytime breezes and cool night air. The furniture and bed were all comfy, though I think we spent most of our time on the porch watching the hummingbirds at their feeder right in front of us :) And after a long day hiking in the mountains the hot shower was HOT and good for a tired body. Greg and his bride-to-be Laurie are lovely people. We were greeted on arrival. They made sure we felt at home and comfortable. Greg gave us a tour of the property, and Laurie made sure we had sugar for our coffee. When you plan to stay here, plan to get away from the world because that's what it is perfect for. Leave your stress down by the river and get up the mountain to unwind and be restored by the trees, wild blackberries, and some of the prettiest sunsets ever.

    Sandra2019-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • Greg's place was a perfect little get away in the mountains. Peace, and quiet and everything we needed for our stay was available. The fire pit was even prepared before our arrival making an evening fire a cinch!

New cozy cottage set in the pines with beautiful views of mountains, prairie, and wildlife. Set on 23 acres, it enjoys a tranquil setting with a walking/biking trail. Fire pit and s'mores. Yet, it's only 6 minutes to Grangeville. Breakfast of yogurt, juice, fruit, coffee, oatmeal, cereal, milk, toast and eggs (you cook) is included. Portable crib and highchair available. Preschooler toys. Free WiFi. Cell phone coverage is spotty. Texting works, calls are iffy. You can use our land line.
Mountain Pines Guesthouse is the perfect spot to take advantage of all the outdoor recreational opportunities in Idaho. It is conveniently located just 5 miles east of Grangeville, and is on the way to Kooskia, Kamiah and Missoula. 10 minutes from the South Fork of the Clearwater Rv. which boasts excellent salmon and steelhead fishing, kayaking, swimming holes and small beaches. It's safe, when the water is low, for tubing and inflatable kayaks. Hunting, biking, 4 wheeling, hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, and mushroom picking opportunities galore are available on National Forest lands just 20 minutes away. The Salmon Rv. beaches and rafting also just 20 minutes away. Hot springs 1 hour away, on the road to Missoula. We'll gladly recommend beaches, hiking/biking/4 wheeling trails, put-in and take-out points for rafting/kayaking. Professional rafting trips are available on the Salmon Rv. starting in Riggins, 1 hour south. Washer and dryer are available in our home. I'll even do your laundry for you - for a fee :)
  • I only mark it “as expected” because we have stayed here about 5 times. It is exactly what we expect and want, clean, quiet, pleasant.

    Nicole2019-11-29T00:00:00Z

  • A very cute little home with a beautiful view!! Very nice hosts who were there to greet us and answer any questions. Thank you for having us!

    Jenesse2019-11-09T00:00:00Z
  • Relaxing with beautiful views. Nathalie thought of everything we could want. Kitchen was amply stocked with fruit, juice, eggs, bread, coffee etc. Any condiment you might need. She even bought dark roast coffee beans because I mentioned I liked dark coffee. Lots of fluffy white towels, extra blankets and plenty of hangers in the closet. Everything was sparkling clean. Nathalie responded promptly to any question we had. Nathalie warned us there was no cell reception but internet worked great so we just used Skype to make calls. Quiet but just off the main road. Highly recommend this lovely place.

    Georganna2019-10-29T00:00:00Z

    Amy2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Nathalie’s place was the perfect overnight stop for us on our travels. The apartment is warm, cozy, clean, stylish and has a lot of special touches. Maps and historical info about the area, a stocked fridge and cupboards, comfy bed and pillows, and a lovely view into the valley. Communication was easy and quick, and we appreciated Nathalie telling us about road closures we might run into on our route. Excellent Airbnb!

  • Troy was very kind and we even ended up staying an extra night! The cabin is beautiful! I would bring your own coffee though since there wasn’t much, and just know that the extra bedroom is an additional fee which I hadn’t noticed when I booked. We had a great time and will be back!

  • Absolutely perfect spot to stay, on any type of trip! My father and I stayed at Erin’s place while fishing for steelhead in February ‘20. This space allowed us to roll in after a long day on the water, enjoy a home cooked meal, and hangout in the comforts of home. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. Erin and her husband, Justin, were awesome hosts! Their place was comfortable, convenient and thoroughly relaxing! Highly recommended!

This two bedroom, one bath (shower only) furnished 1940's cedar-frame cabin is nestled in a grove of old growth fir and cedar along the banks of Little Smith Creek. It is historic, rustic, full of character, yet comfortable and clean. There is NOT any telephone, cell service, Wi-Fi, Broadcast TV, or cable. There is a lot to do! It's like camping, only better.
Come stay in our furnished 1940's cedar-frame cabin nestled in a grove of old growth fir and cedar on the banks of Little Smith Creek. It is historic, rustic, full of character, yet comfortable and clean. It has two bedrooms, a bathroom (shower only), kitchen, and living room. We are located near Highway 12 in Syringa, Idaho. There is not any telephone, cell service, Wi-Fi, Broadcast TV, or cable. There are many amenities, but expect to do without, too. Inside there is a small cowboy kitchen w/ an electric apartment stove/oven, a ten cubic foot refrigerator, Hamilton Beach Brew Station, cooking/baking utensils, dining ware, and dining table. Each bedroom has one full-size bed. There are two electric heaters and a propane fireplace. It was built cottage style, so the ceilings are about seven feet. Maid service is not provided or is extra. Don't be fooled by the low price. This is a nice, clean, relaxing place. Safety equipment is important and includes a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, emergency light and first aid kit. The cabin has books, movies and games for recreation, mostly on Idaho history. Nope, there’s no television or news. Your cell phone won’t bother you here, I promise. No internet either, but there are emergency messaging services usually available. Outdoors, there is a campfire & barbecue with a picnic table next to the creek. S'mores are a staple! Enjoy a game of horseshoes. The Clearwater National Forest is adjacent with hiking, wildlife viewing, and hunting. A cool breeze blows down the creek almost every afternoon. The 1.1-million-acre Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness is close. The historic Lewis and Clark Trail is nearby. The local highway is a very nice drive or motorcycle ride. Fishing and rafting (class 1-5) are available on the Lochsa or Middlefork of the Clearwater Rivers. The Selway River (7 miles) and Selway Falls are also close by. It is not unusual to have whitetail deer, quail, rabbits, or turkeys in the yard. Elk, Moose, Bear, Wolves, Cougar, are all close-by. The rivers hold different species of Trout, Steelhead, Chinook salmon, and Whitefish. You might see Beaver or Otters. Bald Eagles, Osprey , and Canadian Geese fly over and nest here, too. Unfortunately despite on-going efforts, we sometimes have raccoons, yellow-jackets and other less desirable wildlife, so be ready for life in the great outdoors. Due to wildfires in 2015, the roof received water damage from continuous sprinkling. We have replaced the roof and one section of ceiling. Some rooms show water spots on the ceilings. We will repair these ceilings at out earliest opportunity. see (URL HIDDEN) The cabin is in Game Unit 12, but unit 10A and 16 are accessible. Steelhead fishing is closed May and June. Spring/Summer Chinook Salmon seasons are to be announced, usually in April, May, & June. The closest public transportation is between Lewiston and Kooskia. US 12 is the main highway. Year-round services are 15 miles. There is a seasonal dinner cafe within walking distance, and another cafe seven miles to the east. Although my name is Glen Scott Swearingen, I have always been called Scott. Please address all your inquiries to "Scott."
Syringa, Idaho is a group of about twenty homes and one cafe. It is in a sylvan mountain cove on the alluvial plain of three creeks, Little Smith Creek, Smith Creek and Syringa Creek running into the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River within a mile or so. The highway, US 12 which was not paved until 1962, separates the town from the River. Lewis & Clark Trail Cabin is on a "Dead End" road which helps to limit traffic and increase solitude and privacy. The are was once the location of a lumber mill, which is closed and used for storage. The mailing address for Syringa is Kooskia, Idaho 83539. Kooskia is actually 15 miles to the west. The area borders the Nez Perce Clearwater National Forest. The area was first settled by homesteaders and foresters. There were cedar sawmills here once, although they are long gone, there is an industrial area used mostly as storage. Syringa, or Mock Orange, is the Idaho State Flower. We're not in the middle of nowhere but one can see it from here ...
  • Our family really enjoyed staying at the Lewis and Clark cabin. It was so comfy and had everything we could possibly need to feel at home. We enjoyed unplugging for a few days and listening to the creek behind the cabin. We would love to return in the future.

  • One of my best long-time friends was badly in need of a peaceful getaway, and that little red cabin could not be more perfect for a couple of good friends to share on holiday together. We felt right at home the minute we walked in the door, and settled into our bedrooms and rocker/recliners as if we had been going there for years. Loved that we could choose to watch a movie without intrusions of commercials or news of the world we were escaping for a few days, and didn't miss our phones. Loved having some of the perks of camping with the most important comforts of home right at hand. Loved that vintage sink that brought some of my own childhood's apron-ed aunts and grannies to mind. Loved the gorgeous surroundings with so many places to enjoy and explore the wild woods and river (we recommend the Wild Goose picnic and swim area for those helped by having secure stairs down the bank to the sand beach and river). Appreciated all the nature books and information about local hikes, parks, beaches, etc. Scott's place is magic. For us it was absolutely perfect. Rustically attractive, totally comfortable and comforting, neat and clean as a pin, and Scott and his wife Pam are gracious hosts. I am hoping it will be the first of many stays for me, and am looking forward to sharing it with my husband one of these days. You could not ask for a more perfect place for 1-4 people to rusticate!

  • Great cabin and perfect location to access the Selway, Lochsa and Middlefork rivers for fishing and swimming

    Mike2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • Super cute rustic cabin. We loved the creek running right behind the property and picking blackberries up the road. It was a lovely place and we plan on going back

    Hillary2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • We loved this cabin and its proximity to the wonderful rivers. The additional amenities of a picnic table, charcoal grill, and outdoors area to relax was wonderful as well.

    Norman2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely location for exploring the Selway river and other areas. Clean and rustic cabin with all the basic necessities. We hope to return sometime!

  • The Lewis and Clark Cabin is a great place to stay with so many special touches and so much beautiful scenery. It's clean, too.

    Kathy2019-08-03T00:00:00Z
  • Such a special little cabin! It was a perfect spot to have as our home base, and we enjoyed hiking and Wild Goose Campground Beach so much! It's such lovely area... nestled right up to a sweet little creek (great to have the sounds all night long) and the old growth cedars and fir trees are just beautiful. The fire pit was the biggest hit with our granddaughters, and Scott even set us up with a stacked fire, ready to go, the first night. Scott and Pam were very helpful, and the cabin is packed with books and info on the area. Highly recommend this little cabin! Thank you Scott and Pam! :)

There wasn’t WiFi, but we didn’t mind a bit. This is the place to disconnect and enjoy a glass of wine and the view. Wonderful place and highly recommend!

Western flare. Clean, cozy and comfortable. 5 minutes to downtown yet out in the country. Quiet, all kinds of birds and wildlife. Great views. Watch planes come and go. Relaxing atmosphere. Pond, creeks. Watch the world go by. Only 20 minutes to either the South Fork of the Clearwater river where you have world class Salmon and Steelhead fishing, or head south to the mighty Salmon river for the big river experience, including boating, fishing and rafting. Close to the mountains and forest.
We've lived in this same location for over 25 years now, and I still have not found a better place to be, and I'm in the Real Estate business! it has all the things you could ever ask for in a country home and setting, yet only 5 minutes from Main St. It's a great place to see all kinds of birds and wildlife, plus has plenty of room for our animals as well. We have some of the finest views around, plus we have a large pond to attract the wildlife and more. We enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Many times you can hear cows, and coyotes too. We truly love this place, and think just maybe you might too!

  • Gary’s home is beautiful and extremely clean. You can tell that Gary put a lot of thought into how it was constructed as it is a very good place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Gary is a very nice guy and makes you feel very welcome!! Also ...His breakfast is better than he says it is!!

  • Gary was a great host and has a beautiful place. He catered to our schedule and was helpful with anything we needed. Felt like we were hanging out with a friend rather than staying at a B&B. Would highly recommend staying here if your needing a place to stay in Elk city!

    Zachary2018-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • This place is a gem. The house is a truly unexpected pleasure and Gary is a wonderful host. He built the house himself and can tell great stories about the process. We stayed only one night on our way to the Magruder Corridor Road, and wish we had stayed longer. Highly recommend.

    Jonathan2018-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Gary's home is so beautiful, the b & b rooms are very comfortable and clean. Every amenity you have at home is offered to you here! The location of this home is great, just 2 miles from the center of Elk City and thousands of miles of recreation land at your fingertips from his doorstep! Gary will go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable and be sure you have everything you need! We were on adventure motorcycles and he even offered to pick up groceries for our stay! There are also 2 other cabins/homes on his property that he rents. We are already planning our next trip out with friends to explore more of the trails! If you will be in or near Elk City, this is absolutely the place you want to stay!!

    Diana2018-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Oasis is not quite the proper word, because this incredible abode is located in paradise. Comfort is an understatement, and brief nature walks are right outside the door. Elk City itself has several dining options, we chose the Saloon and sat at the bar - felt very welcome there as well. Whether it is hunting, fishing, hiking, or simply relaxing and taking in the breathtaking beauty of nature - you will find it. Even cell service in town and Wi-Fi at the BnB! The local history is also interesting to take in. Gary is the perfect host, friendly, resourceful, attentive.

  • Perfect house for our needs and Mrs. Noma was great! Make sure you take the massage chair for a spin!

    Billy2019-12-07T00:00:00Z
  • Five of us stayed at Noma's place for a wedding and were very happy with the house. First, you must know that the pictures don't really do it justice, it is much nicer in person. Second, there is a great back yard, grill and patio area that isn't mentioned or shown in the pictures, and third the kitchen has everything you could possibly want. We had such a great time assembling the wedding favors and making breakfast at this lovely home. Thanks Noma for the great memories and the fabulous cookies!

    Jene2019-06-30T00:00:00Z
  • Our family has stayed a week in Noma's beautiful home every year for the past three years and we always enjoy the experience. Noma is an excellent host and keeps her house in tip-top shape with every amenity one could wish for. Of all the airbnb accommodations I've reserved, I've never had a better experience.

As an ecologically friendly resort we pour most of the generated income back into our conservation efforts. So far we've converted over a hundred acres of crop fields into bird habitats and food plots for wildlife. When we bought the ranch it had been a cattle ranch for over 60 years and it was grazed down to nothing every year, therefore there was nothing left for the wild animals to eat. When we bought the ranch there were no elk, no pheasants and the deer were sparse. We still graze cattle on the ranch by leasing the grazing rights April through June, which “moows” down the spring growth which has several advantages, the most important being that it greatly reduces wildfire risk, but also makes the canyon area extremely nice for hiking and adventuring. We leave the fall growth for the deer and elk.
Scotlyn Ranch is a peaceful place. Neighbors are far apart and the only sounds emanate from nature. Guests are able and encouraged to walk, hike, swim, ride, explore, discover all three thousand acres. You can self explore or we have guides who can help the experience be safe and fun.

The ranch is bordered by the Nez Perce National Forest to the east and BLM land to the south. Slate Creek runs through acres of the ranch and access to the property is made over the creek on a private bridge. The ranch is centrally located to many tourist activities to include hunting, fishing, rafting, hiking, antler hunting in the canyon and mountain biking. Or simply enjoy the peace and relaxation of the ranch while sitting on the front porch swing or enjoy the sound of the creek while sitting around the fire pit. Marvel at the wildlife that frequently visits the 100 year old orchard. It's wilderness at your fingertips.
Total privacy surrounds you. Do as much or as little as you wish. Enjoy all that nature has to offer by taking a walk down by the creek or taking a hike through the national forest. There is plenty to explore.

  • Wonderful stay at Olga's place on the Selway River! I could wake up to the view every day and go to sleep to the cool breezes and river noise every night. It was a wonderful place to unplug for the weekend. You can 4-wheel, kayak, tube, hike, etc. from here. The loft had everything that we needed for our weekend. The bed was super comfortable, the bathroom spotless and the kitchen supplies perfect for our needs. I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone looking for an escape on the Selway.

  • All around great stay!

    Nathan2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodations were clean and comfortable and had many special touches, but the true magic of Olga's place is the location next to the Wild and Scenic Selway River. There is easy access to the river for floating, a river beach nearby for swimming and a national forest road that extends for miles into the hills above the property. Just an incredible place to explore, relax, and enjoy the beauty of the area. Olga was a wonderful host who provided a thorough orientation to the studio apartment, outdoor kitchen and property. I would love to return someday!

  • Wonderful hosts on beautiful grounds...a true gem!

    Clinton2019-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • Olga and Morgan's place is fabulous, a truely unique experience- out deep in the selway river, overhearing the river in the distance, with the old logging bridge, perhaps a car every 30 minutes or more. You feel a certain detachment from the urban world while also having the luxury of the beautiful studio to rest and admire nature's beauty from. Morgan and Olga are a sweet couple, filled with stories and history, however they respect the boundries of having solitude as well. Hot tub is pleasant, placed on the edge of the property- river in the distance, birds chirping- deer prancing near by. My dad and I had a wonderful time and wish we could have stayed longer. Highly recommend. Hope to come back again next year. FYI: No cellphone reception and internet service is very basic to check e-mail/gentle web browsing. A nice way to disconnect- however need to make sure no needs from outside world.

    Sebastian2019-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay at Olga’s place. Great location for rafting the Selway river. Fresh made zucchini bread, still warm from the oven was a sweet surprise upon arrival. Outstanding views and sounds of nature! Everything was great, would definitely stay here again.

You can self explore or we have guides who can help the experience safe and fun.

Remote Idaho cabin, outdoor adventures and seclusion
Comfortable wilderness retreat. This is my primary residence. Two bedrooms available with private bath for each. Living room, theatre room, outdoor kitchen and laundry included. This bedroom (suite 2) does not meet ADA spec’s but it is ADA friendly. Hand holds for toilet and shower, wider doorways and shower chair. Ramp access to main level of house.
Freedom River is approximately 2 Miles North of Elk City. ATV’s are common here. There are hundreds of miles of trails to ride on out the front door, no need to trailer, start from here. Snowmobiling is incredible on the same trails. Steelhead fishing in the South Fork of the Clearwater is world class in March. Turkeys, elk and deer are common in the yard. Anything from photography to prospecting is available.
