My place is close to great views - misty mountains, a railway station and a rainforest. You’ll love my place because it is a cozy, rustic heritage home. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets). You can use my home as a base for day trips - Kandy is just half an hour away, and Sigiriya 1 hour.
This is a beautifully-preserved (100 year old) colonial bungalow located on a 16 acre plot of land that used to be a tea plantation. It is 40m from the Patham paha sub railway station but i can also pick you up from convenient spots along the main road. I can take you on a walk to our spice garden and rainforest.
  • So: that was outstanding and warm hospitality, as you rarely meet. Sarath's House is half an hour's drive from Kandy (if you tell Sarath your arrival time, he will pick you up from Kandy), close to the Kandy-Matera railway line. This is great, because it takes about 5 slow minutes to the small train station, from where you then about 45 exciting and entertaining minutes with the train to Kandy "Central Station" drives. His wife cooks wonderful and lovingly prepared Sri Lanka curry and both are always ready for a chat and a source of information about the country and its people. Sarath's guided tour through his garden is a lesson in spice and natural history, which impressed us a lot and made a lot of fun. The small houses on the property are cozy and the price-performance ratio is absolutely right! Thanks for this great stay! We wish all other guests as much fun as we had!

  • We are so thankful for having Sarath and his great family as our second host in Sri Lanka!! We couldn‘t imagine it any better way! All their advises, their care and the best Food in town (cooked traditional Sri Lankan Dinner and breaki with a lot of Love) we recommend honestly to everybody coming to this country. The house is a bit far away from kandy city but absolutely a hideaway in the jungle. You can go by bus or train to the city center while sarath will give you all advises and take care of you like you’re part of family. He even brought us for free the whole way by car to catch our train to Hatton (50 min drive in rush hour)! This place we definitely recommend as one of the best we can imagine. And beautiful too with wood Bungalows and yoga terrace with great view! Sarath also gave us a very beautiful and special tour through his garden and rain forest land as well he took us for a fair price on a trip to „sigiriya“ and temples. such a beautiful host - travelers should go to get the best of Singhalese way of life, empathy and warm-hearted welcoming!

  • Our stay with Sarath and his wife and daughter was one of the highlights of our trip. You immediately feel at home. Such a gentle, affable man you could ask for anything. The wife of Sarath cooks wonderfully. That way you will get to know the real kitchen from Sri Lanka. The view is beautiful and the trip through his herb garden is very passionate. I can recommend this stay to everyone and I will certainly do so to everyone I know and want to travel to Sri Lanka. I do not give all the stars quickly, but they are well deserved!

  • We had a wonderful stay at Saraths place. We enjoyed the herbal and spice tour and the Aryuvedic treatment Sarath gave us as well as the great food, his families hospitality, the view from the treehouse in the mornings and the conversations at night. Highly recommended!

  • Our stay at the Green Plantation Retreat was one of our best experiences in Sri Lanka. Sarath and his family are the perfect hosts and recognize your desires even before you have pronounced them. The bungalows are located in the beautiful rainforest, only 30 minutes from Kandy. Shortly after our arrival and a cup of tea we got a very interesting tour through the in-house rainforest and were allowed to taste fresh spices (nutmeg, pepper, cardamom, etc.). On the second day, Sarath organized us a whole day in the Knuckles Mountain Range: we walked among many local tourists to the highest point, saw rains and the "Mini Worlds End". We have never eaten as well anywhere in Sri Lanke as here! The breakfast table was over loaded with specialties and fresh fruit from the own garden. On New Year's Eve Sarath organized an original Sri Lankan barbecue. If you feel like nature, hiking and an authentic holiday is right here!

  • We had a wonderful time staying with Sarath and his family. We stayed in the biggest one of the three bungalows for two nights. As the place isn't accessible for normal cars, Sarath picked us up from the main road. They offered us a welcome drink straight away and Sarath gave us a small tour of the rain forest behind the estate (a former tea plantation) and showed us different spices and fruits (no more herbal garden tour needed). The guest houses and court yard (incl. pool) aren't huge, but the ambience is wonderful. Beautiful colonial decor and thoughtful details (like a tree house, we did a yoga session in). We had dinner and breakfast twice and loved the food. Sarath's wife is a wonderful cook and it was the best introduction to traditional Sri Lankan food we could have hoped for. Given that we mostly had hotels offering English breakfast (toast, eggs, sausage) during our stay, it was actually the best breakfast - loved the coconut pancakes, fresh fruit and roti. Overall, wonderful time, wish we could have stayed longer and would definitely recommend it. Just bring tons of mosquito repellant and be aware you're not that close to Kandy.

  • Sarath and his wife were so kind and welcoming. And the food is out of this world!! One of the best breakfasts ever. The home is rather remote (we got lost driving there and wish we'd accepted Sarath's kind offer to meet us at the Kandy station) but just a 3 minute walk from the train station, which is a whole other adventure in itself. We ran out of time and weren't able to take a tour of the grounds and the spice garden, but what we saw we loved. There was even a peaceful little perch to do yoga. Lovely home, highly recommended.

Situated at 15 km from Kandy on the foothills of Hunasgiria mountain, Domaine de Bellevue faces a wonderful panorama and is blessed with a mild climate. As it was a tea and spices plantation, you can still see clove, pepper and cinnamon trees. The domain is surrounded by a natural reserve where numerous species live, such as deers, porcupines, monkeys, wild cats, reptiles and birds. Higher in the mountain live some leopards.
The bungalow, at the edge of the jungle, consists of a room, a bathroom and a large veranda. It is modern and built on the European style. A family with two young children can be lodged.

  • The house and especially the property are beautiful. We absolutley loved staying there. The garden and pool area are stunning (even better than in the pictures). There are so many beautiful plants, trees and flowers all around and it is a really calm place to relax after sightseeing. Contact with the staff was really easy and fast. We would totally go there again.

  • Beautiful house and super nice and accommodating hosts. The house is well furnished and the Piol was huge. It is very remote, so you have to rely on tuk tuks or scooters. The host organizes these on request. We had a private demonstration of the harvest, which is recommended. In general, we are very satisfied.

  • The best house we stayed during our trip. We liked it here not only because this house is amazing (it is) but also because we got a lot of hospitality and help. We celebrated New Year here with our friends. It is kinda a big deal for us in Russia. We came here december 31 at the evening and we did not have enough time to prepare so Jahn helped us with everything. He went shopping with us and helped to choose the best fruits, vegetables, fish etc. He was also kind enough to help us to cook Sri Lanka style rice and fish bbq. He also arranged for us tuk tuks when we needed and always was very helpful and nice. Very nice location, pool is very clean, rooms are comfortable. We especially enjoyed having breakfasts outside. It's close to different tourist attractions. Yes, shower needs improvement but we had the same problem in all houses and hotels in Sri Lanka. If we had more time, we would probably stayed for more than just two days.

  • If you are visiting Kandy, this is THE PLACE to stay in. Stylish - so much so that you want to steal some of the ideas used here. Sparkling clean, FRIENDLY staff, a wonderful Estate Manager, a delightful setting, pool that is excellent.. the list goes on. A special mention here - John, the manager is exactly what you want in your host. The place has thought of even the smallest of things you might need. Plenty of small touches that make your stay extra nice. A tip... please dont book for a day. You will regret it. Do at least 2 days here, if not more. We extended our stay after a day.

  • Nice property, plan to stay for a week to get a proper experience. Little far from major towns, but that is not an issue if you are looking to stay in the country side. Staff is extremely courteous and they have gone over and above their capacity to help us during a crisis in their country. We did not feel unsafe even for a bit. (Context: We stayed here during the SL bombings where there was curfew for a couple of nights)

Area the Bungalow is located is commonly known as ‘Dumbara Valley’ and it stands majestically with its beauty surrounded by tea estates. It gets fairly colder as the day approaches the night, as the elevation of the area is 3000ft.
Hatale Worlds End Bungalow adds nothing but more beauty to the Bungalows offered by Meezan. Hatale region is comparatively colder to the regions where our other Bungalows are located. The Worlds End Bungalow is located towards peak of the mountainous area.
  • 5/5 for this accommodation! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and cannot recommend visiting and staying at the Hatale mini World's End Bangalow enough. We only stayed one night, and wish we had time to extend our stay for at least another night or two (or a week). We were greeted by Akram, whom was very responsive to calls and messages and made sure our journey and arrival was safe. We lost our way as we drove a tuktuk ourselves up the mountain and the GPS was acting up, but Akram gave us good instructions on how to get to the accommodation effectively. The accommodation was a bit hard to get to, but definitely worth it! We parked our vehicle at the Tea Factory, and Akram organized a tuktuk for us to get up to our accommodation. The views are breathtaking, and the accommodation spotless, neat and very very well maintained. The gardens around the bungalow are well managed and lovely, and you can tell a lot of heart and care has been placed in maintaining the bungalow. Augustine, the accommodation caretaker is an amazing cook and is friendly, accommodating and very hospitable, bringing us tea, catering to our needs and even helped us bring in our washing quickly when there was a sudden downpour! We felt so spoilt and cared for, we did not feel like leaving. The food (we had dinner, breakfast and lunch) were all delicious and extremely generous, and we ate more than we usually do because they were so good. I think I will miss Agustine's cooking so much, I might come back to Sri Lanka and this bungalow just to have it again. Akram even took us on a hike up to the mountain peak, and a tour to the tea gardens where we tried our hand in picking tea leaves and learning about the process and agriculture. Akram was very friendly and knowledgeable about the plantation, and also gave us a lot of advice in helping with our trip plans. He is also a very good conversationalist, and shared his knowledge about Sri Lanka, the culture and many more. They care so much that we are happy with our stay, and went above and beyond to make sure all our needs were met (we even had a late checkout after enjoying home cooked lunch by Augustine to enjoy our surroundings a bit more before leaving). Taking a tuktuk down to the tea factory where we were parked, we were also treated to a tour inside the factory to see the processing of the harvested leaves and a tea tasting experience (At no extra cost! They just are passionate about tea and were happy to share!), where we also purchased bags of tea for souvenir at a very reasonable price. No other accommodation would have provided such a service! Just as we were about to leave, we realised our tuktuk wasn't starting and had been ransacked by monkeys. Akram and a few other workers helped us get it started again so we could be on our way. This is probably the best hospitality and service I've received, and I cannot recommend this place enough. However (very minor downsides), internet and cell service was a bit choppy at times, which was not a major problem because we were enjoying ourselves with the view and surroundings. Also hot water pressure was a bit low, but there's hot water so all was good anyway! As this bungalow is a bit secluded and situated in the plantation, there were also a fair number of bugs, which didn't really affect us much but just something to keep in mind. Great place to stay, highly recommend!!! Thank you Akram, Agustine, and everyone else that we met during our stay for the wonderful experience!!!

  • Great food, must try the Sri Lankan dishes. Very warm and hospitable staff, everyone was welcoming. Good views around the place, take a walk and be amazed :)

  • We stayed here for the last leg of our Sri Lanka trip and it was a perfect place to wind down after an amazing trip. It's secluded and a little difficult to get to, but the views are absolutely worth it. With views of the Knuckles on the left, the Victoria dam on the right, we spent our time at the bungalow, hiking, admiring the views, walking through the tea gardens and taking pictures of the stunning scenery. Terrence was an exceptional host! We reached the Hatale tea estates around 1 am and Terrence was around to guide us to the Bungalow. Hot face towels and hot tea at 1 am - bliss! He also organized a guided walk up to where the tea workers were, so I could get some pictures. The caretaker (Augustine) was earnest in his efforts and nothing was too much trouble for him. He made some tasty, homely meals for us! The rooms are spacious & clean. The bungalow is very private and we loved the quietude & calm ofthe surroundings.

  • I’m so glad I booked Simpson’s Forest hotel for my visit to Kandy. Prior to booking, Nalaka was prompt in responding to my questions, and offering recommendations. He booked a private taxi for me, a train ticket to Ella on short notice, accommodated my late arrival, breakfast requests, etc. On arrival, Vidhu was waiting, offered me some Ceylon tea that is grown on the property. Check-in was smooth, the room was beautify, clean, and spacious. The bed was so comfortable. All amenities were stocked! From toiletries, to complementary water, to a minibar. Pictures do not do this place any justice. The location is away from the hustle and bustle of Kandy city, with views of mountains, tea fields, and trees. Breakfast was a hit! Thank you very much, Nalaka, Vidhu, and the entire team at Simpson’s forest hotel for making my stay in Kandy a memorable one. Would stay here again.

Lost in the hills of Kabaragalla in Mandaramnuwara, an old tea estate established in the late 1800s sits gracefully, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The factory, abandoned for 28 years, was tenderly restored to its original glory as 'Tea and Experience Factory'. The fact of Kabaragalla estate fetched the best price at the first ever tea auctioned held in Sri Lanka on 30th July 1883, makes it unique among other tea estates.
The principle intention for this experiential boutique hotel is to provide its visitors with an immersive, artisan journey from tea plucking to packing while creating a luxurious space for rest and relaxation. The locals from the estate have been re-employed at the tea factory to help them sustain their way of life. The tea factory is a masterpiece of prefabricated industrial engineering with well proportioned , corrugated iron facades with a standardized structural frame. As with everything else of this period, the ingenuity practicality of the Victorian engineer cannot be negated .
    1. Plucking - The task of plucking is usually undertaken by women who are paid minimally industry wide. The ideal pluck consists of two leaves and a bud which is collected in a basket strapped to forehead. Each shrub is plucked every 5-6 days, depending on the weather, to obtain the ideal leaf. 2. Weighing - At the end of the each day the plucker's baskets are weighted. The daily average is around 18kg a day. Roughly 4.5 kg of fresh leaves are needed to make 1kg of black tea. 3. Withering - Leaves are withered approximately for 14-16 hours where around 43% of the moisture in the leaves are taken out. 4. Rolling - Leaves are placed on a rolling machine which moves in a circular motion rolling the leaves to induce enzyme activity which triggers the fermentation process. 5. Roll breaking - Leaves are then crushed into smaller particles. The cell walls have been broken to further induce enzymatic reaction. 6. Fermenting - The crushed leaves are now left for about 1.5-3 hours to oxygenate. The leaves change color from a deep green to a light copper color when ready. The broken cells cause a chemical reaction that release tannins & theine. 7. The firing machine or dryer as it;s called, dries the fermented dools with a 90*C heat waves that reduces moisture up to 3%. 8. Grading - Grading will remove stalks and other fibrous matter. 9 & 10 - Tasting & Packing.

  • We have just spent a month in Sri Lanka, stayed in some incredible places and met some lovely people, but this place is the best of all. The house is beautiful, the landscaping and setting are breathtaking and the team were kind, entertaining and every element of the hospitality was perfect. The food was also the best we have had, and our standard was set high! I can’t recommend this property highly enough and would travel to Sri Lanka just to stay here again. Thank you for having us. • We stayed here with our 2 kids of 11 and 8 years old and absolutely enjoyed the fabulous place. Such a great location far from the busy places in the neighbourhood, with yoga, a refreshing pool, great walks and very good food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Together with the very friendly service makes it great place to stay.

  • Strathisla is located about 15-20 minutes outside of Matale. The secluded location makes for a truly relaxing stay, as there is no sound from neighbors or vehicle traffic. Just the peaceful sounds of birds and other jungle wildlife. Breakfast is provided daily, and lunch or dinner can be made by request at very reasonable prices. We had dinner every night and the food was incredible. They were also very accommodating for food for the kids. We used their arranged drivers for airport transfer, as well as day trips to Sigiriya / Dambulla, Kandy, and around Matale. We all loved the pool, and the views, particularly at sunset, were amazing.

  • This is an historical Tea plantation house, the room was spacious , the food was excellent and the views were awesome. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The only area of improvement would be the bathroom which even though was conditioned was a bit noisy but overall is agregar place to stay I highly recommend this place.

Ashburnham Estate is a working tea estate within easy reach of Kandy in central Sri Lanka. The main house is a 1930s planters' bungalow with stunning views over the valleys below. The estate is around 100 acres with several great waterfalls - perfect spots for swims or private picnics and sundowners that the house staff will happily organise. (Please note there are 6 rooms in the house and other guests, or the owners' family, may be staying also. Rates shown are for 1 private room.)
Ashburnham is truly off the tourist trail so gives a great flavour of real Sri Lanka. At the same time it's within easy reach of Kandy but most guests prefer to enjoy the estate; visiting the waterfalls, exploring the tea fields with Mr Das, the estate manager, or heading off for treks and picnics through villages and mountains.
It's a truly beautiful area with very an older, non-touristy Sri Lankan feel.
