Evergreen Cabin is set on 78 hectares of private land, the majority of which is a part of the largest strip of East Coast indigenous bush into which the cabin is set. It is built (by ourselves) from trees that we planted from seed over 26 years ago. This consists of oak, Japanese Cedar and Californian Redwood - combined with corrugated iron cladding. Safe and secluded setting leaning towards bird watching over the expansive views, sundowners, star gazing and general mental shut down.
Fresh air, stream fed water and general peace, apart from the birds.
The property is unique in that you feel miles away from civilisation, yet you are only 12 minutes from Howick, an hour from Durban or four hours from Johannesburg. Yet we are worlds apart!
  • This is the perfect place for someone looking for connection with nature.

    Adele2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • An incredible cabin nestled in the forest. Lovely host.

  • We enjoyed our stay in Evergreen Cabin. Peta welcomed us very warmly upon arrival and was very kind and helpful. We enjoyed the generous supply of fire wood and the fire place in the lounge was a life saver. The cabin is quite rustic, but very comfortable. The ideal place for a quiet weekend away.

Are you someone who wants to hit the Karkloof Trails for some of the best trail riding/running in the country? Or are you someone looking for a relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle of the city? We have the cottage for you. The Cottage is a 100 year old stable building that has been converted into a cosy little gem nestled in the middle of a paddock on Aldora farm, in the heart of the Karkloof and not more than 300m from the Karkloof trails themselves that run through the farm.
The cottage boasts some beautiful views over the surrounding farm land and meandering streams that gurgle past, not far from your front door. Fall asleep to the call of Fiery Necked Night-jars and the eerie calls of the Black-Backed Jackals and wake up to the rhythmic booming of crowned cranes flying in to feed in the fields around you. The cottage is equipped with a small kitchen for basic cooking with pots, pans and utensils. There is also a weber braai for those of you keen on a good South African dinner of chops and potatoes (charcoal can be purchased from hosts or bring your own). There is also a frying attachment for those keen on a breaky braai. The cottage has a bathroom with a bath but no shower (if that is a dealbreaker for anyone). You will have full access to the farm with 2 mapped walking/running trails and a dam STOCKED WITH BASS. The cottage is also fenced with an electric fence. The room comes with 1 King bed, (2, small, singles mattresses for small children can be set up on request in the main bedroom)
The cottage is conveniently located less than a 5 minute drive from the trail head of the Karkloof trails. This club has a small restaurant serving pub grub on a Thursday and Friday and some delicious breakfast/lunches on weekends. We are 10-15 minutes from the Karkloof Canopy tours and the closest restaurant is 10 minutes away (Tumble Downs). The cottage is a 15 minute drive from the town of Howick, in which you can find multiple restaurants and shopping. We are also 10 minutes from the Karkloof Farmers Market, open on a Saturday morning with some delicious fresh produce, baked goods and obviously some excellent coffee. Other places close by: Terbodore Coffee and Reasturant: 20 minutes Groundcover Leather goods/Barnowl Cafe: 10-15 minutes Multiple Wedding Venues Midmar Dam: 20min
  • A beautiful stay in a quaint little cottage. Luke and Georgie's personal touch to our stay made it all the more magical. From the pretty flowers and card for my birthday to the coffee pods we treated ourselves to every morning. Our stay exceeded all our expectations. Luke went out of his way to accommodate our travel arrangements and we hope to be back soon!

  • Incredibly beautiful secluded cottages on the edge of the Karkloof. Loved the river in front of the houses, cows and horses ambling past and the trails up to the mountain and nearby waterfalls. Victor and family very welcoming and accommodating. Amazing holiday, it was hard to leave!

    William2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful setting, right on the river! we did 2 walks through the forest to beautiful waterfalls (accompanied by the sweetest chocolate Labrador who led the way!)- really is the most remote, quiet place, cows and horses roaming, incredible bird life... best place for children- our boy was in his element... Comfortable cottage with all the basics needed! lots of blankets provided as i'm sure it gets cold in winter! fantastic hosts who drove with us to the cottage (slow drive along some dirt roads- i was in a ford ecosport and coped fine on the roads despite some rain). Apples, tea, coffee, milk and rusks provided which was a nice touch! Rustic but comfortable! Would def be back- thanks so much

The unit had fresh flowers and nice goodies to snack on. The pizza oven was amazing. We received complimentary fresh veggies and eggs and they did our washing, which we greatly appreciated after being on the road for a few days. Thoughtful touches that makes your stay so comfortable. Stone Haven is a quaint self-catering cottage with a loft bedroom that comfortably sleeps two adults, but can accommodate two children on fold out chair beds. A converted barn, the cottage now has a fully equipped kitchen containing counter top oven with 2 hot plates, fridge and sink and a bathroom with shower only. There is a wood burning stove for additional heating in the colder months as well as braai/barbecue facilities. Firewood for both can be provided free of charge on request. You have the cottage to yourselves which is overlooked by the magnificent indigenous bush and Mount Gilboa, best viewed from the veranda or the 1 meter high viewing window in the bedroom. The cottage also enjoys its own private garden area where you can soak up the views and enjoy the sunrises and sunsets. We invite you to explore our beautiful indigenous bush during your stay with us. All paths are clearly marked for a hike up the mountain to the top of Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall, where you can enjoy stunning views across the valley, and we also recommend a walk to the bottom of the falls for a very different perspective of the bush.
The main attractions in the area, apart from our own Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall and indigenous bush, are the Karkloof Canopy Tours, the Karkloof waterfall, Benvie Gardens and also the very popular mountain bike trails, accessible from the Karkloof Polo Club. Every Saturday morning the Karkloof Farmers Market is open between 8am and 12pm where you can find the best local produce from the area. All these attractions are no more than a 15 minute drive from the property. The popular Midlands Meander is also easily accessible, offering an abundance of craft shops, leisure activities and eating establishments to keep you busy during your stay

  • Picturesque stone cottage with lovely views... far from the maddening crowd. Wendy and Bundy are both fantastic hosts and went out of their way to make things comfortable for us. This is a delightful little base to breath in some fresh air, enjoy the scenery and to explore what the Midlands has to offer.

  • This rustic haven was a treat to be in after a long day of travels. Peta guided us to the house where she greeted us on arrival. It was dark and we got to see the pure beauty of the venue in the morning when we woke. If you are looking for a place to come and unwind in the beauty of hills and forests, this is definitely the place to come too. You have an awesome fireplace that warms the house inside where you can enjoy a glass of wine and relax!
