  • Great hosts!! From our arriving they made sure that we feel at home. They gave us great tips! Gave us their time and attention whenever needed. They were helpfull, kind, open handed. The place was big, spacious, well equipped, safe, nearby all the attractions! Two steps from the sea! Oh! And their food is "DELICIOUS"!!! ❤️🤤

  • Perfect little spot for a breakaway from the city. Clean, containing all the necessities. Walking distance to the beach. Our hosts were welcoming and accommodating, providing useful tips on the area. Lekka stay in Coffee Bay.

  • Amazing hosts, very welcoming and warm. They gave us local tips and made us feel at home. The accomodation is super close to the beach and major attractions. Thank you for having us!!

    Mara2019-12-07T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely stay directly next to the beach.

    Sandra2019-12-05T00:00:00Z
  • Cozy unit right in the heart of coffee bay. 20 minute drive away from a garage and a 1 minute drive away from Hole-in-the wall. Also, right next to a pretty secluded beach with beach caves. The best part about the unit is the hospitality. Rachel was super considerate and gave us a complimentary meal on our arrival and also served filter coffee in the morning. Both Rachel and Stephen made sure throughout our stay that we were comfortable. Will 100% recommend this place to everyone. Note: Do not expect a super polished Airbnb like the ones in bigger towns and cities, keep in mind this is a rural area. The road to coffee bay has potholes and coffee bay itself has tiny patches of gravel roads. Nothing that a small car can't handle, but still to be kept in mind.

    Shivam2019-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent stay, the beach is just across the location. Mr & Mrs Stephen made sure my stay was comfortable and convenient in every way. For those, who are looking for a homely feel during your stay - this is your place.

    Abraham2019-11-22T00:00:00Z
  • This was a really nice place to stay for 2 nights. The hosts were very friendly and gave us a lot of advice what we could do or where we could eat. The room is simple but has everything you need and even a little kitchen with everything in there. The room is close to the beach, within 5 minutes you are walking on the beach. And in a short 15 minutes drive you are at the Hole in the Wall. We had a wonderful time there and hope to come back some day. But please ask them how to drive if you come from the Durban direction. The GPS send us to a 40 kilometers gravel road, but you can easily drive a tar road from Durban.

(includes wi-fi) We are 10-15 mins drive from Coffee Bay with it’s beaches, surfing, caves, hiking, snorkeling, canoeing, boating and backpackers & eateries! We are also 30 mins drive from the iconic Hole in the Wall which is a must see and swim!
Built mostly with repurposed materials and still in the process of being finished, our Cabins have evolved ‘out of necessity’ over the past three years into a space where we can escape and still connect with nature and the community around us. We really hope to share this wonderful experience with our guests. The bedrooms are private, have Queen size beds, Mosquito nets, fans and private bathrooms.
We live in the Mawhosheni Village and are part of this Community. We feel safe, protected and respected by the Community and support them whenever possible.
  • Our stay at Sandra"s cabin, was incredible! The most beautiful, safe, romantic setting in a chic tasteful and super comfortable cabin, filled with so many loving personal touches. We couldn"t have asked for anything better. It ticked every single box for us. The well equipped little kitchen was perfect, the sparkling clean splash pool was a bonus and a huge treat, the bath tub in the bedroom was a special touch and the open deck off the bedroom allowed us to enjoy our wine under the stars. Absolute bliss! It is truly a magical place with an amazing host that gave us 5 star service from start to finish. We can"t wait to go back again :)

    Janita2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Sandra's accommodation was by far the nicest accommodation on our trip. Everything is built and furnished with great attention to detail. Sandra was always available, was able to answer all questions and was always helpful. The way to the apartment was well described and you couldn't miss it. The roads are not paved, but were not a problem at all. We will definitely be back if we should be in South Africa again!

    Viktoria2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • Its such a beautiful place they created and it was a pleasure to meet Sandra. The check-in was pretty easy and we really enjoyed our time. Sandra is also very flexible and we could even stay a little longer. We would love to come back any time.

    Andy2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • This was one of the most magical places I have ever stayed in. Total relaxation in a rustic-chic decorated cabin that makes you feel as if you are part of nature. Lovely hosts is a bonus! My only regret is that I only spent 2 days. Next time I’ll stay for 2 weeks

    Lorinda2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Would recommend this place to anyone who is keen on a bit of adventure and absolutely amazing views but with a lot of comfortable touches! Wonderful experience!

    Oscar2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • This place is an absolute gem. A bit of the beaten track, so do not fear the bit of dirt road because the place is worth it a million times over. It has the most amazing views from everywhere and very peaceful. The place runs all of collected water and solar, but there is more than sufficient of both. The pool is very cool and relaxing and you will get lost in all the nice little features of the place that offer each there own view.

    Hendrikus2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • We had the best time at Sandra and Alan's cabin. It was exactly the break from the city that we needed. The view from the bedroom was unreal and I got some amazing photos. The views in general were amazing! The house was extremely clean and we felt very safe. It's about a 15 minute drive from Coffee Bay itself and it was really easy to get to Mtata bay and our favourite Mapuzi bay. Definitely reccomend having a 4x4 car though. The solar system at the house was extremely efficient but I also reccomend taking cooler boxes for meat, drinks and ice. Ice was also available in Coffee Bay at one of the backpackers but come prepared as the cabin and area in general are quite remote.

    Kevin2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • OMG!!! What a great place to getaway from the stressful lives we live. The view is to die for. You have everything you need but not everything you want ... Just perfect. Will definitely visit again

  • A great place to stay! The hard journey was definitely worth it. Very warm hosts! Great location! Always my pleasure!

    Constanze2019-12-13T00:00:00Z
  • Super hospitality people and place, wonderful view, uncrowded surf spot, even without a 4x4 easy access just takes a little bit longer 😁

    Marcos2019-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • After the dirt road took us three hours instead of one as we just had a 'normal' rental car, we arrived pretty exhausted and kind of pissed but the beauty of this place with its view and tranquility excused everything. Lu and Otto were really hospitable, flexible and we had great food there (and also some action with her little daughter who didn't want to let us go :D). Would recommend it to everyone who is willing to take some hard time on the dirt road - it's worth it.

    Anne Sophie2019-01-23T00:00:00Z
  • An outstanding location which no one can resist. All you need is a best company-which you will get. I traveled there alone and for definitely, you feel welcomed and taken care in good hand. I will never forget this gem and if I ever get to surf well, I will proudly tell people that I started surfing at Freedom O’clock :)! Thank you Otto and Lu once again.

    Sarama2018-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Freedom O Clock is the best spot for surfers, families and adventuring travelers. Extremely homey, neat and inviting. It’s down to earth and simple, in a way that doesn’t cause a culture shock. It is perfectly located, overlooking the Mdumbi point and river mouth. It’s 100m from a chilled lagoon, 300m from a quiet beach and a world class wave. If you want local insight, Otto and Lu have been living here for a decade and provide priceless knowledge. They were also on point with helping to line up activities, capitalizing on what the Wild Coast has to offer.

    Henku2018-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Had so much fun here! Felt like we were part of the family! Amazing views from the deck!

  • Everything was wonderful! Great view from the premises AND from the room, it’s such a beautiful spot. I wish we could have stayed longer! Cool fire pit, everything is available to make food in the communal kitchen. Lu and Otto are extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful! Thank you guys for an amazing time in uMdumbi!

Coffee Shack Backpackers is idyllically located right on the Bomvu beach. The rondavel huts are situated across the beach from the main backpackers, giving you the privacy you want when you need it, but the opportunity to join the fun social vibe when you want to. You will use the clean communal bathrooms and have access to the self-catering kitchen. All meals are available, as well as excellent coffee and there is a full restaurant and bar available
Coffee Shack is known for its fun social atmosphere and its well priced activities and meals. We offer daily activities, ranging from hikes and cultural experiences to our specialty -surfing. Grab a 2hr surf lesson for just R70. There is free WiFi, a laundry service, safe parking, braai facilities, self-catering kitchens, bar, restaurant, pool table.
Coffee Bay is still very much a traditional rural village, very detached from the daily hussle and bussle. The closest well stocked shop is at Ngcwanguba, 20km from Coffee Bay. There are basic shops in Coffee Bay to buy bread, milk and dry goods. There is no ATM in Coffee Bay, but you will find cows on the beach, traditional ceremonies and lots of untouched open space. Known as the Wild Coast, you will see it lives up to its name as you take a walk along some of the most scenic beaches and coastlines in the world.
  • The Coffee Shack is a very cool hostel. We‘ve booked a private hut. The room was clean, the food was great and the people are awesome. Don‘t expect luxury, it is still a hostel and you have to share spaces with each other.

    Laura2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • Super friendly team, good food & good service. Great surroundings € beaches. We can definitely recommend it .. Greetings to the team.

  • Pretty damn nice backpackers place at about the best location in coffee bay. Don't expect 5* luxury, but an authentic and fun experience.

  • It's a good hostel and the staff is friendly as well. Many surfers come here for their surf practice

    Stefan2019-11-18T00:00:00Z
  • We were pleasantly surprised! Great location and beautiful premises with a bar, a campfire, pool table and much more. We stayed at a hut which was cozy, private and offered a beautiful view. Communal areas (kitchen, bathroom) were basic but offer everything you need. Not for people who desire luxury, but great for people who love a social, natural and fun space at a great location. The people working at Coffee Shack are kind, welcoming and always up for a chat. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend for hiking, surfing, beach walks and much more.

    Erik2019-10-03T00:00:00Z
  • I would really recommend visiting the coffee shack. For families and couples I would recommend the private Rondavels whereas solo travellers the backpackers. They provide different outings that help you get to see as much as possible of coffee bay. They have a restaurant that is well priced with amazing food and generous portions.

Kitchenette with gas stove and fridge. Bedroom on mezzanine floor with ladder access. Separate toilet from the main house, with a beautiful forest view. Close to surf, fishing and beautiful hikes.
Wood fired hot tub in the most beautiful setting.
Staying here you're right in the middle of a local village. Close to Coffee bay but yet far enough away to experience serenity and the untouched nature.
  • Beautiful space, truly a slice of paradise. Johan was an amazing host, nothing was too much trouble. An incredible spot to come and escape the real world for a little while, the views from the hot tub were outstanding. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for something quirky and off the grid. Would love to stay again!

    Leah2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • Gorgeous spot in an epic location with everything you need to relax and switch off. No doubt one of the best places I have ever stayed!

    Max2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place in the heart of the Transkei. Very rural. A perfect unique getaway. The hot tub is definitely a selling point. Highly recommend the stay.

    Ruan2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Stayed two nights at johan’s, and enjoyed every minute! Great views, great hot tube, great adventure while seeking for dolphins! I’d recommend a stay at the real kei!

    Florian2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect for a undisturbed weekend chill. The outside hot tub is a BIG bonus and offers amazing views!

    Elmien2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • The Real Kei is the real deal! Johan was a super host - friendly, responsive, and helpful - who went out of his way to make sure we had an excellent experience. After we arrived he mentioned the weather was going to be good the next day and we could consider going out on his boat for fishing and whale watching (fairly priced). We saw a super pod of dolphins, whales, and pulled in a 50 pound Tuna. The next day Johan organized a hike for us with a reliable and knowledgeable guide. We had a fantastic time trekking up the beautiful coast. I highly recommend this place and will return one day myself.

    Jon2019-07-17T00:00:00Z
  • Really nice! We had a super great time à Johan’s place. The place is so unique and we had the chance to go on a boat trip with him to watch dolphins and to experience ocean fishing. Thanks a lot!

    Marie-Lou2019-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • Johan is one of the nicest guys you could meet! He made us feel right at home from the moment we met him. His property is a little gem and we will definitely be coming back to stay there next year. Highlights were being taken out by Johan to dive the sardine run - where we saw dolphins attaching huge bait balls of sardines! And the other highlight was being able to come home each evening and soak in a steaming hot tub while looking at the stars.

  • we had a great stay at freedom o clock and Lu and Otto were great hosts. However it is recommended to stay at least 2-3 nights, because getting there can be a bit exhausting due to the gravel road. We had a small hyundai which was okay, but I would recommend to have a 4x4.

    Corinna2017-11-04T00:00:00Z
  • Our time at Freedom O'Clock was spectacular. This place is highly recommended if you want to enjoy some quite hours in the middle of nature.

  • Was such a special experience staying at Mark’s cottage :)) The location and views are truly unbelievable !!!! Makes you really feel as one with nature and as part of the Xhosa village surrounding you. The cottage is well equipped with everything you might need. Mark is a kind and lovely host that was always available for us. Donald the manager was very helpful as well. A true getaway ! Thank you Seaview Cottage for a time we will never forget !!!

    Nina2020-01-21T00:00:00Z
  • Mark’s cottage has a great view and it is in a very peaceful side of Coffee Bay. Donald, the cottage manager caught for us some delicious fish and Lena made a great bread. We loved a lot the animals around, pigs, dogs and goats, they ate all the food rests without leaving any traces..amazing!

    Giulia2020-01-09T00:00:00Z
  • This is a magical place unlike any other. Feels both remote and warmly embedded in the community. We were so grateful to the community to experience this place. The views are incredible, the natural environment is abundant and diverse, and the accommodation and hosts Donald & Lena ensure you have everything you need to enjoy it all to the fullest. As per the description, a 4x4 was necessary for us - Especially because of the rains when we were there. We so hope to visit this place again. Thanks to Mark for the useful and detailed information to find the spot with ease.

This majestic off the grid cob built cottage over looks the Mdumbi river, lagoon and mouth. Solar lights and water will make sure you are comfortable. There is a fully furnished kitchen with gas stove and fridge. The ablution set up is a shower and a compost toilet overlooking the serene Mdumbi river.
The wild coast is breathtaking and the Mdumbi point offers great surf. Booking for kayak trips and river cruises can be done from Mdumbi backpackers. The river also has a variety of species for the avid fisherman.
  • The eco-cottage is beautifully positioned, somehow simultaneously feeling both secluded and part of the surrounding community. The cottage is super well set-up for an off-the-grid place: the kitchen is well equipped and the combo of rainwater tanks, solar-geysers and solar power system makes for a comfortable stay even in the rustic location. The panoramic views are quite something and and the overall vibe of the place is great. Lastly, Troy is a fantastic host, providing useful suggestions and contacts, helping with fresh coffee and ice when we ran out, and generally just being welcoming and accommodating. In summary, this is a great spot and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone keen on an off-the-grid Transkei experience or break.

    Jai2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • we loved our stay here. Its the most isolated, tranquil and peaceful place. You have the whole property to yourself and the view are incredible over the river and out to sea. Its amazing how theyve built the facilities - the compost toilet and little kitchen are ideal and the solar powered shower had plenty of hot water. You will need to be self sufficient - there isnt anywhere near by to stock up and definitely bring a torch! its about a 20 min walk to the backpackers/seafront where you can sign up for activities and get a meal (you need to sign up for dinner in advance). The journey there took us a lot longer than expected and the place is difficult to find - however troy was there to show us the way. The final road to the property would be better suited to a 4x4 - it was very tricky in our high clearance 2WD. cant wait to come back one day!

    Chloe2019-06-14T00:00:00Z
  • The amazing view over the mdumbi river, the nature that gives the definition to the Eastern Cape and the spot on location is what made my stay so enjoyable. I really do appreciate that you hosted such a pleasant BMB. Thank you.

    Kristina2019-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent views. Nice and secluded overlooking the river mouth. Brilliant experience. Would recommend it to anyone.

  • Hidden gem in absolute paradise!

    Shaan2018-12-20T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is remote with incredible views of the near by beach and river (within walking distance). Be prepared for spectacular stars and sunrises :). Highly recommend for anyone traveling to the area!

    Hannah2018-12-06T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at this gem of a cottage overlooking a stunning river mouth for eight nights and thoroughly enjoyed every day. The location is outstanding: the sun rises outside your bedroom window and from the deck outside, you look down on the river mouth and the ocean. We especially liked the off-grid and low-impact living focus and a great deal of thought has gone into making this a comfortable experience - solar power provides electricity and hot water and rainwater tanks provide water. It is wonderful to know that the money goes to community development projects through Transcape (an NPO). We are very grateful to have stayed here and we'll definitely be back!

Wake up to mind-blowing views of the ocean, beach, rare mangroves and forest-lined Mdumbi River. The incredible views and access to the beach and river makes this an ideal laid back place to visit for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts who don’t mind roughing it a bit in this unspoilt rural area.
Discovering the safe, secluded, pristine beaches, river estuaries, rare white mangrove swamps and other Wild Coast treasures make the 2 hour trip from the main road well worth it. Coffee Bay is just 45 minutes drive away and there is a very scenic 3 hour hike between Coffee Bay and Mdumbi.
  • If you love the outdoors and want to visit a place still untouched by the commercialisation that is happening everywhere else go to Mdumbi beach. What to expect? The hosts Lu and Otto are rock stars, more than adequate backpackers accommodations, a beautiful beach and amazing pools in the river for swimming. The road from Nqeleni has amazing views but is not for those with gravel issues so be prepared for that. Don't expect? Excess and opulence, it's not necessary and there is no place for it. I will definitely be going back...

  • Freedom o’clock is a true slice of heaven

    Michael2018-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • An absolutely fantastic and lovely place to stay at. Although we had a rough journey from Coffee Bay to the accommodation (our Renault Clio made it through :)), it was really worth it going there. Otto and Lu are very friendly hosts and the view over the ocean is just great. We recommend to stay longer than 1 night.

  • Very good place and good stay!

  • freedom o clock is pretty much the best place ive ever stayed.... the location and place are perfect. once you get there, the rest of the world no longer exists, it just falls away. lu and otto and coral b are the best hosts, good waves, nature, home cooked fresh food, cold beers and laughs, loads of advice..... great dogs. i dont often go back to places ive already been, but im gonna break my rule for freedom!

  • Beautiful place, nice people and good food.

    Elis2017-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • If you're going to mdumbi you need at least to stay there 3 nights and freedom o'clock is a nice place where to stay. Before going ask the owners instructions to get there cause is not easy even with google maps. To get there from N2 South takes about 2 hours, try to do it during the day because of the animals in road. If you're going to cook buy all your food just after left N2 because in coffee bay or mdumbi you'll find nothing the same with the gas for your car. Once there we did nothing special, our option, just seat and relax and enjoy the views. Also we went to the beach and got some sun and some oysters, but you can surf or hiking ... About the accommodations is really simple, the shower is with rain water and the power work with solar painels, all good for us, but i belive that is not for all. Any way we got a great time there :)

We are located 2 minutes walking distance from the beaches. We offer a self-catering option but you can choose one of our delicious meal options. • Seascape is in the centre of Coffee Bay, a 3 minute walk from the beach. We had a great stay, Rachel and Stephen were very helpful when needed. The place was clean, basic, exactly what we needed. This is a very good "value for money" stay.

  • Beautiful setting , rolling hills and Justin was a friendly host!

    Mzukisi2017-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • Justin gets an A+++ in my book for a well run establishment and his contributions to the local people. Your Wild Coast experience starts with stocking up in Umtata for groceries and gas - craziness redefined for driving. The dirt road out is interesting with all the people, animals and potholes you have to watch out for. There are signs posted which help to know where to turn off, locals were helpful as well when asked. Cottage was very comfortable and clean. Communal kitchen and dining area was one of the best we have seen, except for the steps which Justin is working on replacing. Justin gets more plus points because the cooking equipment are of good quality and you are able to actually cook with them (not cheap thin pots that burn everything) and he has a knife sharpener available. The location of the kitchen is on a hill with exceptional views. The staff are very friendly and efficient and the place is kept immaculate. We asked about fish and oysters and they managed to get us some oysters, tried to find me someone for a massage for my sore shoulder, tried to help with anything you asked. The shop on the honor system is well stocked with many items and some crafts from local people. Walk to the beach is down the dirt road and it isn't that far or hard to get to. Kids along the way make the walk memorable. They ask for sweeties but I know they don't have dentists in the area so I gave them lapel pins instead - they loved them. Go and enjoy, relax, appreciate all the work Justin has done to make this a great destination.

    Barbara2017-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • Traveling to the Wild Coast on a very bad road is quite the experience. However, you will be driving through Xhosa territory. It's the real Africa for sure. Enjoyed seeing the kids and others on the road on a Sunday morning. The rondavels are not glamorous but comfortable. Quite clean. And the beach is absolutely gorgeous. I would recommend it to anyone who isn't afraid of an authentic experience. It's not the Hilton but there is profound peace and a warm, welcoming feeling. They are right in recommending more than an overnight stay. Make this a rest stop on your South African adventure.

    Karyn2017-05-22T00:00:00Z
  • It may not be the easiest place to get to but it was well worth the effort! The room were very comfortable and relaxing and the shower had plenty of hot water. The shared kitchen had everything we needed to prepare food. There are no restaurants so make sure to bring something to eat. If you don't they do have a small store with soups, pasta, etc that you can purchase and prepare. The scenery is amazing and you can walk along the beach and bluff for hours. Definitely a great place to get away for a few days!

    Dylan & Amber2017-04-19T00:00:00Z
  • This place is pure magic - we chose to stop over at Swell after hearing some amazing stories through trip advisor. You know what the stories were not wrong. The drive down the dirt windy road to get to this place will be forever one of the most memorable drives for our whole road trip across the country. The local people and animals you cross along the way is unbelievable!! The energy you guys create in your space is perfect - love the honesty box and the african items. PS - make sure you wake early to catch the amazing sunrise!!

The bed was super cozy and we heard the sound of the sea from our room, which we loved!!! The rooms are brand new, beautifully furnished and decorated as well as super clean. We felt very comfortable and left veeery relaxed and calm. Coffee Bay and the surrounding are lovely. We only had one night but definitely would recommend to stay longer! Lindie had a lot of tips what to in and around coffee bay and we were sad that we did not have time for all of them! Also: try the home-cooked meals , they were amazing! Thank you again for making us feel so welcome and cozy. I hope we can be back sometime! We would recommend this place to absolutely everyone!

  • The best view of the ocean with good food and friendly, helpful people. If you looking for peace and quiet with just the ocean as your soundboard then this is just for you. Just make sure that you take everything that you will need on your trip as there is no shops around. There is a little spaze shop for the basics like bread, milk and eggs etc. Otherwise you can have the best breakfast and dinner made by Lindie. Furthermore note that there is no TV so make sure you take enought reading material.

  • An excellent perch for exploring the Wild Coast. My stay was short, but I'll be back, and I'll stay here again. The cottage was just right and watching the sunrise on the patio was great. Breakfasts and dinner were excellent. Probably the best food in town, thanks to Lindie (I admit I only tried three places, but this was by far the best). Hospitality was great and I got good advice for getting around. They let me stay extra long on check-out day and use the shower again after my hike. A gem!

  • A super nice accommodation and Lindie supported us with great hospitality with advice and action. We recommend. If you go there, you should definitely follow the instructions regarding the route, otherwise you have to drive a very uncomfortable gravel road. We chose the recommended street, but were happy to be out in the light, because this street is partly full of very deep and many potholes, many animals and people are always on the road.

  • Lovely people, lovely place! What an adventure, and Judy and Brian where the best hosts. Do ask them to put you in touch with Prince to take you on the hole in the wall hike - the most beautiful hike I have ever been on! Do ensure if you want to cook at the cottage that you bring everything you need with you as there are no shops and do bring cash along. Judy and Brian also offer breakfasts and dinners which are great!

Nestled in a valley between the hills of Coffee Bay along the Bomvu river, this pristine 2 ha is a mere 5 minute barefoot walk to one of the most amazing beaches of the Indian Ocean. Although our space is quiet and peaceful, we are very centrally located (walking distance 2-5 minutes) to all the village's clubs and eating establishments for festivities and events.
  • If you looking for something different, the bus is exactly where you want to be.... great location, proximity to the sea and local eateries makes this a wonderful place to stay. The host is phenomenal too.

  • Joettes funky bus is a unic, lovely and charmful designed place. Situated in vibrant coffee bay, it's a wonderful easy going and peaceful hideout. It's good aquipped with a communal kitchen and shower with a view. Joette is a very worm and helpful host (she even helpt us out with some herbs and vegetables from her own garden) with a beautiful spirit. She has loads of tips and story's to tell. Best place to crash in coffee bay.

  • We received the warmest welcome to the Wild Coast by Jo and Nate. Their hospitality, suggestions on must see places and concern for our safety made for a memorable trip to Coffee Bay. Loved the Hideout and it was such an honour being your first AirBnB guests. Definitely chat to Joette and Nate about organising a guided hike to the Mapuzi Caves.

  • This place is awesome! By far the best place I have stayed at in the Transkei. Great location. Great transkei feel with comfortable accommodation. Thanks to Nomsa and Machunisa for being great hosts. Can't wait to come back!

    Jason2020-01-09T00:00:00Z
  • This place is worth the drive down a scenic road. The uniterrupted beach view with a combination of rural life. The morning walks on the beach alone are worth it. Book here and be surprised. Nomsa was soo helpful and informative. We will be back soon.

    Siphokazi2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • We drove for 1hr during the day from Coffee Bay . The directions given to us were very clear and there are signs on the road if u ever have doubts . It’s gravel road therefore make sure u travel during the day to enjoy the scenic views along the way. Arriving at Swell eco Lodge- we were blown away by accommodation and the surrounding place is just too beautiful. The place is very neat and has everything you will need to cook. Just bring your own groceries because there are no major stores around . So we came prepared. The kids and us enjoyed activities offered. (Fishing and horse riding ). Loved the fact that the place offers Nanny services for our little one . We also felt safe in every aspect . The beach is nice , a short walking distance and it is quite. There were no beach boys bothering us or demanding money or selling us stuff. Enjoyed the Xhosa bread! Thanks to Nomsa for that! Most important we had limited network this helped with just switching off and enjoying the holiday thoroughly... we will certainly be back here no doubt!

  • Absolutely epic place in untouched Transkei. The hosts, staff and lodge all are out of the top drawer! Our family holiday (with our dog) was awesome! Thank you Justin, Lee Anne and team for a special 2 weeks! We will be back!!

  • Great and stylish place with a nice view and close to a nice beach. The hosts Lee-Ann and Justin are very friendly and there for any questions. Very laid back environment but a long and exhausting drive to get there since the gravel roads are in bad shape. Perfect accommodation for the adventurous ones and those looking for tranquility at the same time.

    Daniel2019-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay at this place. After a hard way to this accommodation, which took us around 3 hours on a gravel path the experience was unique. Located between locals in a small village you have a real „african experience“. It’s definitely a stay worth, would recommend to plan a few days to see all the beauty and enjoy the place as much as possible. Highly recommend this place ! Marc, Charline, Marcel, Nadine

  • You cannot put this place into words! It’s a little paradise where an mangrove river delta reaches the ocean. The backpackers is located on a hill so you wake up with an awesome panoramic view each morning. There are many activities to do like kayaking up the river or surfing on a secret beach. Endless beach walks and swimming action! Lu, Otto and Coral made us a lovely stay and we enjoyed every moment. They also offer making great food for you if you want, but to bring some extra is what we would recommend, in case of activities. One of the best places so far in Africa! (&420frndly)Will definitely return there. Stay for at least three nights and don’t give up on the difficult dirt roads!! It will take you a while to get to paradise 😄

  • Perfect first experience of the Transkei! Otto & Lu were amazing hosts, making us feel quickly at ease in their beautiful spot. Real sociable vibe to the accommodation , you felt part of a group even during our short stay. Cherry on top was the food - we'd brought our own food which stayed firmly in our bags as we were spoiled with food you'd expect in a five star resort, excellently prepared by our hosts. Have to mention the Braai crayfish - incredible.

A large and airy room perfect for a small family or 4 friends. The large window lets in the sunshine. It contains 2 single beds and 1 double bed. Situated next to the beach and gift shop Red Blanket Roots. This large and sunny room has a shared bathroom and looks out onto a lush garden.
Your hosts, Tanja and Meg are two friends living and working in Coffee Bay. Red Blanket Cottages is unique because it shies away from the typical backpacker vibe. Our space is as peaceful and as calm as it can be. However please do take note that there is a potential for noise as we do have neighbors. We have a few very happy rescue dogs that live with us, as well as a beehive and an active bird life in the garden.
As mentioned before we are situated in the lively 'hub' of Coffee Bay. Surrounded by backpacking hostels, and restaurants. It is a friendly and relaxed neighborhood but can get a little 'livelier' on weekends and during festive seasons such as the December/January period.
  • Truly a superhost. Meg and Tanja were very welcoming, caring and helpful hosts, we really felt at home immediately. We loved the location (very central and less than 1 minute walk from the beach) and their little garden. Perfect for a couple or couple+1.

  • If you want the cleanest, neatest, cosiest place in Coffee Bay that's right on the beach, then stay at Red Blanket Roots. I am neither a camper nor a backpacker so I can't speak for those types of accomodation. I can, however, say that the best stay I have ever had on the entire Wild Coast has been at Red Blanket Roots. From friendly conversations and experienced local advice to mosquito repellent in your room, Meg is the definition of what a superhost is. Five full, well-earned stars.

  • We had a lovely stay at Meg’s and Tanja’s airbnb. It was a beautiful setting close to the beach with lovely music from the neighbouring bnb’s and a nice and cozy room. Coffee bay is the perfect place if you want to escape the city life and experience the real Africa.

    Lara2019-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Meg and Tanja were so accommodating during our stay, letting us bring our kids and ensuring we had insect repellant, good drinking water and enough blankets to keep warm in winter. They gave us the lowdown on a great spot for supper and advice on an enjoyable walk to Coffee Bay's main beach. A great stay at Red Blankets!

  • This place is an awesome spot from which to explore Coffee bay. We were there over new years and enjoyed being so close to the heart of coffee bay and Coffee Shack Backpackers, where we could hang out and meet other young people. The hut is also close to the two beaches and to some nice restaurants in the area (Papazelas pizza is great). As the hut is in shade most of the day it stays cool and the deck is a lovely place to sit and have coffee or read. Megan and Tanya were very helpful and friendly. We would love to visit again!
