Beautiful views of the Warner Mountains to the east and devils garden to the west make this a truly breathtaking place. "In-law Suite" conveniently located near town on 10 acres for easy access to restaurants and shops but quiet and private. Great for pets. Come for a weekend escape or a quick stop through. Message me for long term stay options, whole house rental, or additional people. I often host travel nurses, detailed federal employees and others for longer periods of time.
"In-law Suite" accessed with private entrance. Enter on the main floor to a mudroom, laundry, bathroom with shower, and storage space. Downstairs includes a queen sized bed, day bed, kitchenette and electric fireplace. All of this area is private and separated from the rest of the house by a door. Shared full kitchen, living room, and outdoor entertaining areas on main floor.
Spacious and quiet. Check out beautiful sunrises, sunsets, and countless stars.
  • Great spot in such a beautiful and uncrowded bit of California. The kitchen was well-stocked accessible, the room is cozy and spacious, the bathroom is clean and easily accessed upstairs, Laura allows pets and there's a young horse than greets you when you come outside in the morning--what more could one want?

  • Laura’s place was perfect for our stay in Alturas. The view is amazing and our dogs really enjoyed having some space to run around in. I really loved the heat blanket on the bed that kept us toasty during cold nights!

  • A beautiful high desert home on a large Juniper and sage covered lot, private entrance and very comfortable beds. We had access to the kitchen and a private bath. The place was spotless and the hosts were wonderful. I loved my time there and would love to go back.

Tucked away at the base of the Warner Mountains in Surprise Valley, this pet-friendly cottage is nestled in the pines alongside Mill Creek in Lake City, CA. The bedroom, with en-suite bathroom, sleeps 2 and opens out to a roomy deck for listening to the creek. The comfortable living room provides a futon for additional sleeping. The bright, airy dining room seats 2 and opens out onto the deck for wide mountain views. The kitchen includes cookware, dishes, silverware, microwave, and coffeemaker.
Mill Creek Retreat in Lake City is located in Surprise Valley - California’s “Last Frontier”. Lake City is a quiet, small town with a population of about 100 people. Nestled up against the Warner Mountains, Mill Creek Retreat feels private and remote. This property, set back about 150 feet from Main Street, has an abundance of trees, seasonal flowers and fruit, old rock walls, and the beautiful Mill Creek running right through it. The house is cozy, with an open and airy feeling on the inside. The custom-built redwood deck provides more seating and room for relaxing outdoors. From the deck there are countless paths for exploring, as well as a unique steel bridge that crosses the creek to an old orchard. Originally built around 100 years ago, the Guest Apartment was once the main dwelling on the property. In the 1970s the much larger Main House was added on. The two homes are divided by a wall now, which separates them into two independent dwellings. The Main House is often rented out to visiting friends and family. We strive to provide a safe and quiet environment for our Guest Apartment clients. Our Main House renters and visitors are chosen based on their careful consideration of our Retreat rules.
Lake City has quiet neighbors. Especially in the cemetery! We have the most beautifully-kept, tranquil, historic hillside cemetery you’ve ever seen. And when you venture up there, be on the lookout for panoramic valley views that stretch for miles. You may even be treated to a rainbow. Our property sits alongside the opening of Lake City Canyon. Follow the dirt road up into the wild and scenic canyon by foot or by car. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended, all year-round. A few hardy cyclists have been known to enjoy this canyon road. The road leads over the Warner Mountains, but is not passable during the winter. The streets in Lake City are well-paved for bicycling. There are no bike lanes, but the traffic is very light. Watch out for some of the innocent-looking inclines - they’ll give you a surprising workout! With an elevation of 4600 ft., Lake City offers a variety of weather to enjoy. You can choose snow in the winter for sledding or snowshoeing, when our temperatures can range between -15 and 50 degrees. Or, choose our summers full of sunshine, which have been known to get over 100 degrees in July and August. Usually we are treated to a brief season of thunderstorms in the late summer, and these are legendary in their beauty.
  • Excellent spot. Very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed our two nights at Teresa and Elisabeth's place. Highly recommended.

  • This has been the cutest place! So happy I booked this one. It was a little difficult to find in the dark when I was driving in on my first night so I would suggest getting in earlier if possible. This cottage sits on a unique slice of land where there are fruit trees accessible on the property and can be accessed by crossing a small bridge over the creek that runs just a few steps from the house. I saw a fox just a few meters from the porch on my first night here. For a city girl like me, that's a pretty awesome sight.

    Lindsey2019-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely quiet place in the middle of nowhere - comfortable, with modern amenities and homesteader charm.

  • What a charming house surrounded by a delightful garden. There is a stream, a small wooden bridge and fruit trees. The environment is calm and idyllic. The house has a certain charm, the atmosphere is warm and the decoration neat. We had a wonderful sleep. In the morning we picked some apricots for our breakfast. We did not meet our host but a pretty bouquet of flowers and a personalized note to my name were waiting for us. Thanks thanks ! We were very happy to know this comfort.

Welcome to our home, nestled in beautiful Modac County, California. Take your boots off and stay a bit. Our home offers, a great out door experience, close to town. Our home is set off from others, so you can truly enjoy your time, or meet the neighbors if you like. Close to forest access, farm land, hunting, fishing, hiking, horse back riding, skiing, and photo opportunities. Wildlife and bird watching. Within the Pit River basin & Warner Mountain Range, a mild climate & friendly people.
Good direction on google maps from Alturas to our home.
Alturas is a friendly place with many local businesses. Well stocked grocery store, and wonderful family restaurants for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Or eat at home, both are perfect ideas.
  • This is a very cute place out of town. It was very quiet and a great place to take a stroll. The house was very clean, kitchen was fully stocked ( even had some food items, in case you forgot something in town), and cable TV. I would recommend, it’s a perfect place to get away from town and enjoy nature.

  • Vermeda’s place is wonderfully rustic, with beautiful views of the north California pines and rolling hills. It’s easy to find and has a touch of my grandparents ranch in Texas that I grew up going to. She’s also super responsive. Highly recommend

  • Cozy house tucked away, perfect for a night's stop or a gathering!

    Jakob2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • We wanted a family trip where we could all really unplug and decided that Modoc County would be a great place to visit. Vermeda is super responsive, as is Shawn. They were both very helpful when we got lost, when we had questions, when we needed a repairman for the washer. Alturas is a relaxed little town. Vermeda's place is around 15 or so minutes from town. Her place is incredibly peaceful and surrounded by hundreds (thousands?) of acres of farmland. We had total privacy and if we had wanted to, could probably have gone a whole week without seeing another person. Some things to do in Alturas and Modoc: swim at the local pool for $3, visit the Lava Beds about 90 minutes away, mine for obsidian, go up to Oregon, or just sit in the yard all day staring at the cows and scenery. Vermeda 's place is very private. It is a double wide trailer and there are no visible neighbors. The place had been cleaned well before our stay and the kitchen has all cookware, utensils, etc. It was warm in Alturas when we were there but became nice and cool at night. Bring bugspray so you can sit outside in the evening and enjoy the silence and solitude. Modoc County doesn't have a ton of high speed internet or great cell service, so be prepared to unwind. If you do need fast internet or cell service, there are places in town like the hotel/saloon/cafe that serves Starbucks, a cute place called Wild Mustard where you can get fro yo and coffee, etc. The twilight and sunset hours offer incredible lighting for amazing pictures. We took some amazing pictures which we plan to print and frame. The light and scenery are incredible so if you like photography, Modoc is for you. Overall, it was a wonderful family getaway in a peaceful town with friendly residents. Everyone waves when they pass you in the car and stops to chat in town. Also, in town be prepared to explain what AirBnB is! Folks haven't really heard of it, and it was kind of fun to explain the concept to people and watch people's minds get blown by this idea of AirBnB :-)

Charming cottage, (remodeled vintage mobile), in peaceful Adin. Restful and within an hour and a half of beautiful Mt Shasta, one hour from McCloud river falls, one hour from Burney Falls, one hour 15 minutes from Lava Beds, on the way to Reno from Oregon, a great place to stay if your visiting family in the area, coming to a wedding, reunion, need a couples get-a-way or mini vacation, duck-geese-deer-antelope hunting, fishing and great stargazing area, just a fun stop on your travels through!
You will have full use of home and yard, right next door is an awesome frosty with great burgers, local Adin Supply Market with great gift items and great lunches you could pack and eat on your day out hiking at Burney Falls, or lava beds exploring the caves and Captain Jack’s Stronghold. You could go to Lassen Park and also subway caves on the way there and then end with a meal at Old Mill Grill in Bieber, they serve great lamb burgers or rib eye steak dinner on friday night! Next day you might enjoy going to wildlife refuge in Alturas and dinner at the Niles Hotel. How about 18 holes of golf in Fall River at a beautiful course and check out the antique store and then dinner at Crumbs Restaurant in McArthur which has a gifted chef and sushi night plus a great menu of other delectable eats! If you enjoy hunting do come for whichever season you like and enjoy the beautiful countryside!
Adin is a peaceful community! You can walk the whole town easily and there’s a great park at west end for kids to walk to with swings and play equipment. Labor day is old fashioned fair time in McArthur (30 minutes west on 299 with old fashioned fun and a carnival. There are creeks and streams within 10 minutes of town to lazily enjoy the outdoors!
  • My boyfriend and I stayed at Haven of Rest for a weekend trip to Lava Beds National Monument. The location was perfect for this. The unit has everything you may need - a fully stocked kitchen, towels and other bathroom supplies, two beds, couches, a dining table, plenty of storage space, private parking, and wifi. What made this stay exceptional was Deborah's hospitality. We were able to make breakfast at home with the eggs and oatmeal she provided, her delicious baked goods and apples nourished us on our adventures, she lent us flashlights for the caves, she responded to all messages promptly, and she gave a ton of recommendations for things to do and places to eat in the area. I highly recommend this AirBnB and will keep this place in mind if traveling in the area again.

  • probably the nicest airbnb host I've ever communicated with! (and hopefully we actually make it there next time! We had trouble with our little EV car and our limited range made getting to the lovely cabin a great difficulty - but the host was very kindly about our change of plans and we definitely will be planning a trip in the future - erm... just maybe not in this particular vehicle or just with a better plan on how to get there!)

  • What a little gem in Adin, CA! We were on a long road trip up to Seattle and found Deborah’s place, which was more than a haven of rest! • Victorias Villa is great for a small group . Good amenities and location in town close to restaraunts and you can walk to Hotel Niles for coffee in the morning. Sufficient heat provided with plenty of towels and cookware and grill. It is a comfortable size and the WiFi is good with a TV that can be used for streaming or hooking up your own device. Victoria is very responsive and very accommodating to texts and working with your needs. I stayed for work and will definitely be staying again for more work trips.

Newly remodeled 3 bedroom home with a full kitchen on a quiet street just a block from the Modoc District Fairgrounds and the City Park. The home has granite countertops, wood floors, and leather furniture. It’s nicely decorated and very comfortable. Their is a full private backyard and a new lawn in the front. .
A newly renovated super cute home with all the amenities!! It has a great kitchen with granite counter tops and all new appliances but is close to several restaurants so you certainly don’t have to cook!! There are three bedrooms with comfortable beds and bedding plus a cute bathroom. The space is really comfortable in any season and makes a great place to connect with your family. The house still has the original knotty pine walls and leather furniture. It is decorated with pieces from the owner’s travels, giving it a distinctive “west meets world” feel if that makes any sense at all!!! This home is on a quiet street, has a full private backyard and is close to the Fairgrounds, City Park, and High School. It is just two blocks from Main Street where you will find the Market, several Restaurants, and Warner Mountain Weavers, a destination yarn shop.
  • A lovely home with everything you need. Nice and roomy place, bigger than the photos suggest. Walking distance to the restaurants and shops on Main Street in Cedarville. We enjoyed watching the deer stroll through the yard most evenings.

  • Since I've gotten the chance to check a few things out in this town I'd Cedarville, honestly this truly is the perfect place to house someone. Within a couple minutes of where I'm staying, I have a market, a few restaurants, a gas station, and a hardware store THAT ACTUALLY HAS ARCHAEOLOGY EQUIPMENT I NEEDED. Super surprised and excited obviously. I've gotten to know some of the proprietors here and they all said that if there was something I needed, they could order it... But it would take a week. Either way, just know that this town has the essentials for anyone who needs to do work up here. I still am in awe of this place.

  • We booked Lani’s place one night before our intended stay, not knowing where our next station of the trip is. Lani actively reached out to inform us about the road work condition of cedar pass. The house is located in a quiet town, there’s a good sized public park one block away and also grocery stores and restaurants. The house itself is ideal for our family travel with all the amenities you could think of. Lani has put “step down” reminders along with red cardboard pieces wherever there’s a little step, vey thoughtful! Thank you Lani!

This is a historical building built in 1880 that was the local meat market and then later to become a Cheese Factory (creamery) which it is locally known as today. Nearly condemned in the 1980s a very ambitious carpenter decided to not only make it livable but expand the attic to create a very unique living space.
The bottom floor consists of a storefront, of which I’m slowly turning into a mini town museum and a big back shop area. Up some stairs, to the second floor, you will find the kitchen, living room, a bedroom with a double bed as well as a bathroom with a claw foot tub. Up another set of narrow stairs, you find the third floor with a master bedroom, a small bedroom, another large bedroom and a bathroom with a shower.
This neighborhood is full of eclectic people. All with their own amazing stories. From farmers to Pulitzer nominee photographers, from college professors to cowboys, all blend beautifully to create this 100 person town. I encourage you to say hi and engage with the neighbors whenever possible. Walk around town and check out the cemetery up above the firehouse. It is beautifully kept and has tombstones dating back to the 1870s. We are right next to Lake City Canyon RD. Follow the dirt road up into the wild and scenic canyon by foot or by car. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended, all year-round. The closest grocery store and restaurant are in Cedarville 9 miles South. Whalen’s Public House in Cedarville has amazing pizza and salads, great beer on tap and tons of events happening all the time. It is a great place to go to meet cool people, watch live music, and find out where to go. Oh and sometimes bottomless mimosas on Sunday. Jan's Country Harth has an amazing Prime Rib on Friday's and Saturday's, definitely worth checking out.
  • Super clean. Great host! Awesome decorative touches, comfortable beds! Fun, rustic cabin with beautiful views!

  • Steve was an amazing host who communicated quickly and worked with us to make changes as needed throughout the reservation. I can not say enough great things about this unique home and wonderful hosts, do not hesitate to stay at the cheese factory!

  • Stephen’s place has such amazing character! We felt right at home and really enjoyed our stay.

    Mel2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Stephen's place was very comfortable. It was exceptionally clean and very spacious. The kitchen had everything you need to prepare and serve. There were plenty of towels and blankets (it was hot so we didn't need them). I loved the decor and very interesting history. I would definitely recommend your place and I hope to stay there again.

  • The Cheese Factory is a lovely four bedroom, three story house in Lake City. It’s a relaxing place to stay, with homey wood floors and countertops on the second story and a creek just out your window. The house is a quiet getaway and a piece of history as well.

Small, rustic guesthouse in beautiful & historic town of Fort Bidwell, Modoc County, California. Situated in Surprise Valley between Warner Mountains to the West, and Alkaline Lakes to the East. The geology is spectacular in this area. A great place for birders, artists, rock-hounds, hikers & nature explorers.
The guesthouse is fully furnished. You just need to bring your food. Great location for birding and seeing other wildlife. We also have a small sculpture garden in the front yard for people to enjoy. The area is an inspirational haven for anyone. Our place is a great place to just relax and do nothing. We are close to great spots for fishing like Lily Lake or Lake Annie. We are situated in the middle of a geothermal area that will knock the socks off any geology enthusiast or rock-hound collector. If you are a writer, Wren's Way is the perfect place to get work done. We have a small desk in a separate, front room to accomodate you. It could also be used for drawing. For visual artists (painter or sculptor), we offer a small shared studio in the back of the property for an extra fee.
    1. Paiute Indian Reservation is in walking distance offering some interesting cultural events for the community. 2. If you like "old cars"---there are a couple annual events where Ft Bidwell hosts a BBQs for old car clubs. 3. If you are a history buff, Fort Bidwell has a fascinating history to explore. 4. We are 24 miles from the nearest town (Cedarville) with a grocery stores, hardware store and gas station (no drugstore). Be sure to plan ahead and bring any medications, all food, etc. We use bottled water for drinking, but many of the locals drink the well water, up to you. 5. During the summer/fall months some of the local farmers sell vegetables and their is a farmer's market on Saturdays in Cedarville/Alturus.
  • Thank you for your flexibility!

  • This is a magical place. If you love the high dessert and solitude you will love staying at Brenda and Russ's place. The front porch in the morning sun is a perfect spot for coffee and equally lovely in the evenings with a firey sky and a glass of wine. The people in Surprise Valley are so friendly! This little get away was the perfect tonic for the urban blues! We highly recommend!!! Brenda and Russ have a beautiful little spot on Earth.

    Lauren And Dolores2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Brenda and Russ went above and beyond anything we have experienced in our years with airbnb. Their extraordinary hospitality included fresh linens, fresh produce, and a quick carwash to clean off the desert dust! They met us in person upon our (late) arrival, and connected with us easily during our three days there. The property is certainly remote. Allow plenty of time to navigate the arrival route, and try to arrive during daylight hours. The guesthouse has a well-equipped kitchen, a table that seats four, a seating area (with DVDs and a smart TV). The sitting area includes a futon that I think could be used to sleep one or two guests. There are two bedrooms, one with a bed and one with a comfortable chair and some dressers. Fort Bidwell is a place of stark natural beauty. You will find little there in the way of social entertainment. But for a retreat as a couple, this was exactly the right place for us.

    Jim2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • Fort Bidwell and the surrounding valley is an amazing almost secret area of northern CA and this house is in the ideal quiet location to appreciate it. Brenda is an artist and full of local knowledge but the best experiences are walking the streets talking to locals and driving the amazing canyons and high desert areas. It is close enough to the more cosmopolitan Cedarville and host springs but far enough to appreciate the quiet ambiance and wildlife.

  • Don's place was perfect for us. This was my second stay at his home. It is quiet and relaxing, with deer walking through the property, coveys of Quail running around, and a short walk to the lake.

    Bert2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • We were so glad to find Don’s place in New Pine Creek. Don was an excellent host. He allowed us to pick produce from his garden, use the onsite gas grill and he even smoked some fish for us. He is very knowledgeable about the local area and friendly without being overbearing. The house is a three bedroom double wide mobile home with a nice dining area, laundry room, sitting area and front and back porches. The beds were quite comfortable and all of the linens were provided. We had a large family gathering and the house was more than adequate. The kitchen was nice for preparing meals. Don has a variety of kitchen gear but if you need something specific I recommend you take it along. We enjoyed seeing the quail and deer in the yard. Don’s house is a great way to experience New Pine Creek. It is walking distance from the state park and Goose Lake. We also walked into town to the post office and to see friends in Fairport.

    Rachel2019-07-12T00:00:00Z
  • This place is not only adequate, it is ideal! peaceful setting, deer wandering through the yard, an abundant vegetable garden and fruit trees, even a putting green. The peaches, apples, pears, and plums picked ripe off the trees were such a treat! I can't wait to come back next year.

    Bert2018-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • This is a repeat stay for us. We love it here. Don is a great host.

    Bill & Linda2018-04-24T00:00:00Z
  • This property is in a great location and so comfortable. The host was very responsive to all of our questions and did everything to make sure we had a great stay. We definitely will stay here next time we are in the area.

    Bill & Linda2018-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • We were pleasantly surprised upon arriving at Don's place. First of all, it's huge! It's a double-wide mobile home with tons of space and included all of the amenities we could want. City folks might find the accommodations a bit rustic but we found it very clean and comfortable. The setting is lovely and very private. It's within walking distance of Goose Lake, which is a great location for birding.

Newly renovated cottage on our family farm, near the Lava Beds National Monument & Captain Jack's Stronghold, with caving, exploring, fishing, and the great outdoors right outside your back door. Our charming cottage is the perfect home base for day trips to Crater Lake, Medicine Lake, or Lake of the Woods. Just a few miles from the Lave Beds, Glass Mountain (a mountain made of obsidian), Captain Jack's Stronghold (the location of the last Indian War in the US), & amazing birding just outside.
The house was built in the 30's, and renovated in 2018. It is decorated with unique one-of-a-kind pieces found and created by local artists. There are two bedrooms, one with two twins, one with a queen, and all with new memory foam mattresses for your comfort. The living room is equipped with a Smart TV, with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO, etceteras. Strong Wi-Fi surrounds the property, with good service throughout the house and on the deck. The house is heated with a propane monitor, and there is a wall air conditioner. Both are more than sufficient to keep things comfortable throughout the house. The kitchen is equipped with an electric kettle, a Keurig coffee maker, a microwave, an induction stove top, a small refrigerator, and a full complement of dishes, silverware, tools, pots and pans... everything you need to prepare meals, should you so choose. Paper/plastic is also provided, should you prefer to avoid dishes during your vacation. The house is surrounded on the back and sides by a working farm; this year a potato field sparkles in the light. Overall it is incredibly peaceful and quiet here, but there can be equipment in the large driveway at certain times of year. There is always ample free parking, even for large vehicles. Across the freeway there are train tracks, with occasional trains, adding to the country ambiance, but far enough away not to disturb your sleep. The train tracks are tempting to children, and the yard is not fully fenced. Due to this, the house is unsuitable for animals and children under the age of 12. Because this is a farm community there's a lot of soil... Another name for soil is DIRT. For this reason we ask our guests to take their shoes off when they come in. We provide a shoe basket at the door, and clean "house socks" in various sizes for your comfort. Our new wood floors are lovely, and we want to keep them that way. Right across the covered deck is the large farm house. Jim and Marietta will be happy to help you with anything you need to make your stay everything you hope for. As life-long residents of the area, we are full of great ideas and local flair to help make your stay a special event you will not forget.
The two houses on the property are surrounded by farmland. The farm is active, with different crops planted every year in the spring, and harvested in the fall. It gets cold in the winter, with snow at times (we are above 6,800 feet!). It can be hot in the summer, but generally cools off at night, so bring layers so you can keep yourself comfortable. If you want to do some shopping, aside from grocery items, the nearest large city is Klamath Falls, Oregon, about 30 miles away.
  • A wonderful space full of thoughtful touches. We loved staying there and will return next time we are in that part of California. We definitely recommend staying here!!! Perfect location for exploring Lava Beds. Great hosts. Thank you Darva and Marietta! 😀

    Annette2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • We just returned from a trip to the Lava Beds area. Darva's cottage outside Tulelake was amazing! We arrived while the farm was bulking potatoes, a sight that everyone should experience! Our cottage was exactly as pictured on airbnb. Darva has an amazing talent for hosting and decorating... thinking of every necessity and comfort. The courtyard was in full bloom. Our hostess Mariette was most helpful when needed, yet we had total privacy. All current technologies were up and running including a mere "Hey Google, play Garth Brooks." Artwork was deco and well done. We ate our evening meals at Captain Jack's Stronghold, about 2 minutes from the property . Amazingly, we found gourmet food , homemade pies and very "upscale" coffees. We were only a few miles from the Tulelake Wildlife Refuge where the birds flew in full display. The cottage is close to Lava Beds National Monument , a hidden gem in the Park Service. Take time to enjoy this section of the country with the understanding that this lodging is perfect! Our experience was a trip in the past to Lava Beds, our home in the late 70's. Without this outstanding lodging, our trip would have been impossible! We'll be back for certain! Bob and Linda Patton October 2019

  • Darva’s place is a great place to stay in the area. It is very welcoming, comfortable, and the amenities she provides are very generous. It is also just a short walk away from Captain Jack’s Stronghold, an exceptional restaurant.

    Sheryl2019-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • Darva's place is a very unique place in the quite county. Her little notes everywhere kept us amused and informed. You will love the little touches she put into the place and her co-host was an amazing person.

    Becky2019-09-09T00:00:00Z
  • We love Darva's place! She was very helpful and accommodating with us throughout and the place itself was clean, stylish and really comfortable. We visited both Crater Lake and Lava beds, the location is great for the trip too.

    Teenie2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • I was in Tulelake for a three-week project and could not have asked for a more relaxing experience. Darva's house is a hidden gem. The home is clean, comfortable, and close to several interesting sites. Darva is a great host and very responsive. She made our stay truly enjoyable.

    Debora2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I stayed at Darva’s place for three nights for our Lava Beds National Monument visit. Her place is adorable and full of thoughtful touches that made our stay a delight. The cottage is decorated with charm and whimsy, and the patio was perfect for morning coffee. Her place is perfectly clean and comfortable. The town of Tule Lake offers very little in terms of restaurants, and there is one little grocery store. But we didn’t let that bother us because we came to this neck of the woods to get away from the big city! We highly recommend Darva’s place for visitors to Lava Beds.

The Cottage was built in the 1860's by the first pioneer/settler. Miller Creek is named after him. It has been lovingly restored to meet modern requirements without losing any of its charm. We are your only neighbours for miles around.
Fully furnished, air conditioned, private bathroom, private deck and garden. Parking. Organic garden, in season. Generous breakfast ingredients include homemade bread and jam made from our own fruit. All linens, bathroom, bedroom and kitchen are personally laundered, sanitized and laundered by me. The Cottage is a fully furnished and equipped (cook's kitchen!) open plan living space with vaulted antique board ceilings and filled with light. It accommodates a couple luxuriously and a small family comfortably. The barnyard is enormous and offers many secluded, shady corners in which to while away a lazy afternoon. Accommodation is completely private, including deck, bathroom, garden and parking. Winje's Farm is on Upper Lake, Surprise Valley and guests have easy access to the lake's edge. Our Wetlands Restoration Project is also on that side of the farm and offers unique opportunities for birders, photographers, and nature lovers generally. Nearest towns, Cedarville, CA and Lakeview OR. Full service towns, both. Cedarville is 17 miles from the farm and Lakeview, approximately forty, over the magnificent Fandango Pass. This particular corner of California is unique and beautiful with a full range of experience for explorers, from the wide and wonderful deserts of Nevada in the East to exquisite hiking trails and wilderness areas of the Warner Mountains to the West. We do not have traffic jams, busy highways, shopping malls, crowds and noise. Just perfect peace in a perfect place, to hike, fish, walk, read, write, or do absolutely nothing. Wifi on the premises, password provided on arrival.
Surprise Valley is almost Heaven. From the vastness and majesty of Nevada in the East, to the astonishing natural wonders of Southern Oregon and the very edge of California. National Forests, hiking trails, wild flowers, game, birds, clean air, silence, prehistory and history in the landscape and towns all around.

  • We arrived after 5 days of heavy hiking at Shasta and Lassen and this was the perfect place to have a relaxing day! The deck and patio area are nice and shaded for hot afternoons. Jan took us through her garden when we arrived and we picked veggies for our meals. You can see beautiful sunset over the lake. We went down to the lake both mornings, one at sunrise, which was really beautiful. Jan brought us a piece of apricot cranberry pie she had just made which was super yummy and there were fresh flowers in the room. There's an apricot tree from 1880 there that loads up with apricots, we were lucky to be there for that! Also ate an apple right from the tree. Fridge and kitchen were well stocked with things I haven't found at cabins like an immersion blender, etc. We did simple cooking, but you could cook fancier meals too. Loved that fridge held farm fresh eggs. We scrambled them up with chard, onion, peppers and garlic from the garden. We weren't there at bird migration season, but this seems an amazing place for birders. Jan and Russ were great hosts and helpful with travel tips. It's not that far from some obsidian mines which we visited on our way back to Oregon.

  • If you want to come to the best BnB ever come to Winje Farm Cottage. Jan and Russ are magnificent generous hosts and the country side astounding. Abundance of fresh vegetables, dairy, fresh baked bread and love. Hiking, wildlife, birding and relaxing. If you own a Tesla you will find the only charger within a 150 miles. Go for it.

  • The Winje Farm is a quiet single-room cottage getaway, with a lovely little patio, a garden with fresh vegetables, and abundant wildlife. It's a perfect place to decompress and relax. The hosts, Jan and Russ, are absolutely delightful people. You can't go wrong here.

    Carter2018-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • Winje's Cottage is truly a special, peaceful place. We realized this from the moment we parked our car and strolled across the bridge over the miniature stream in front of the cottage. The cottage and the garden outside are lovely. It's very private even though it's right next to the main house. A tall fence in between the house and cottage makes it seem like you're in a world of your own. And you have a private parking area. The hosts Jan and Russ are warm and friendly and very helpful but they also give you plenty of privacy and don't intrude on your solitude. And Jan's home baked bread and homemade jam is amazing. The kitchen is also very well stocked with eggs, milk, orange juice, oatmeal, etc. and pots and pans for cooking. If their garden is producing vegetables and fruit when you're there you're also welcome to share some of the bounty. We made delicious smoothies with the apricots fresh from the trees on the property and the blender in the cottage. We loved hiking along the new short trail across the road from the cottage down to the lake. We saw three deer and two sandhill cranes and watched the almost full moon rise over the water. The alkali lake is sometimes dry so it was nice to see it filled. This was the second time we stayed at Winje's Cottage and we will definitely return. This time we stayed a week and it wasn't enough. We didn't want to leave. By the way, whether you stay at Winje's Cottage or not, be sure to check out Jan's Spaza Shop next to their home. Jan's from South Africa and there are lots of really beautiful and unique items in the shop that were made in Africa.

  • 5 of us stayed in Lodge 2. Clearly, from the reviews and pictures, this was a lovely accommodation. It exceeded our already high expectations. The beds are all comfortable. The “bunk house” type room with 3 beds is very spacious. 3 intermittently moody adult women stayed there happily and without incident. The living spaces are lovely; long dining table for gathering at meal times, cozy couches, all enhanced with Debra’s good taste and wonderful photos. I’ve stayed in many vacation rentals; Lodge 2 has about the best equipped kitchen of them all, including sharp knives. That’s a rarity. We were lucky enough to visit while the gardens are still in bloom - lovely. The hot tub - super! And of course the natural beauty of the Surprise Valley, abundant wildlife & charm of Cedarville cannot be topped. All of us highly recommended a visit to the Cockrell’s High Desert Lodges. You will not be disappointed.
