Places to stay in Orchidlands Estates
Red cinder leads you through the dense jungle to your secluded bamboo treehouse. Nestled on top of stilts 15' up in the canopy of the local flora, ascend to your retreat via the trapdoor or begin your adventure in Volcano National Park 10 miles away.
Upon arrival, let the red cinder path be your yellow brick road as you are lead through the jungle to your personal paradise. At ground level you will encounter a hanging bed, suspended beneath the floor of your new living quarters. Stop and relax or continue up the staircase to the trapdoor. It is through this trapdoor that you are allowed access to the lanai amongst the canopy of trees. A beautiful wrap around lanai allows for a 360 degree view of the lush jungle, while two sliding glass doors grant access to the bedroom. Upon entering, you will notice that the generous windows and doors allow for natural sunlight to flood into the house, complementing the bamboo fixtures and vintage 1970s wallpaper that backs the bed. The white bed linens reflect the light giving a dreamy, cloud-like aura to the space. There is counter stocked with a local coffee and snacks nestled into a corner of the house and overlooked by the handcrafted porthole windows. Bamboo backed cubby holes and hangers furnish the wall behind you and create an elegant, minimalist closet space for you to store your personal items for the duration of your stay. Just past the closet is a sliding door that accesses one of the most fun areas of the house: the bathroom. The bathroom jalousie windows stretch from the floor to the ceiling and the horizontal glass plates open up, creating an indoor-outdoor effect. Naturally caught rainwater cascades from the large shower head above before disappearing into the floor boards below. You'll notice that the natural theme spills over into the bathroom with sustainable cork board backing the shower and air plants intermittently growing throughout. The toilet and hand-made rock sink in the corner make use of grey water eco-principles by allowing you to wash your hands with fresh water before it goes on to fill the bowl. One of the most fun aspects of this property is that it allows you the opportunity to experience true off-grid living without sacrificing any of the comforts of normal life. Natural lighting, solar power and rain water catchment are the three principles that have been integrated into this tree top design, making it almost like a living organism itself. The beauty of this high flying haven is in the details. I spent the better part of three months personally constructing the building as well as the accessories inside. My goal was to create a customized and secluded space for your occasion. The chandelier, hanging lights, port-hole windows, rock sink and platform bed were all DIY projects that I specifically created to enhance your experience. The bamboo pillars that 'support' the lanai and the moss carpet under the hanging bed were harvested from local areas on the Big Island. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION Don't worry, the capital letters are just to emphasize importance. I'm not mad at you. But please read this entire section before making a reservation. As lush and inviting as the Dreamy Tropical Treehouse is, there are inevitable 'challenges' that come with staying in an off-grid treehouse in the Hawaiian jungle. My goal is to give you an experience that combines adventure and luxury so I want to make sure that you are aware of the following things: 1. The treehouse is about 15-feet off the ground and is only accessible by the 'ladder-stairs'. 'Ladder-stairs' is just another way of saying 'very steep' stairs. There is a hand railing and none of my visitors have ever had a problem going up and down. There is a pulley system for hoisting up your bags. Only those who believe they are physically capable should book a stay. Just remember to go up and down the stairs facing them... like a ladder! 2. The running water comes from the rain falling on the roof and is not treated; therefore, the water is not potable. I will provide several bottles of drinking water. 3. The electricity you use is generated by sunlight and is stored in a battery. Once the battery runs out of power it has to recharge. This shouldn’t happen but just be mindful not to leave lights or power hungry items running for extended periods of time (No hairdryers). The windows allow for plenty of light during the day. 4. This is the rainy side of the Big Island so expect some showers! Realize that the pitter-patter on the roof is the rain's first stop on its journey to the water tanks and then to your shower. Also notice how warm it is. Don't think of rain as a trip ruiner but instead an asset to be enjoyed! 5. There are bugs but this isn't the Amazon. For such a tropical climate you will be surprised at how few bugs there are. The main things you will see are moths, fruit flies (due to fruit falling off of the trees) and mosquitoes. Bug repellent is provided but it never hurts to bring your own. They really don't get that bad but their presence increases after a hard rain and during the twilight hours. Luckily, the hanging bed has mosquito netting that drapes down to encompass it. 6. Noises. Living off-grid in the jungle also brings about its own set of noises. The water pump and solar inverter will make soft noises throughout the day as they are used. The falling fruit from the vivie trees can also be alarming if you don't know what it is, and at night you are going to be serenaded by the sweet chirping of coqui frogs. Rustling branches, grunts and squeals typically means that the cute family of wild pigs is nearby. They are harmless and will runoff as soon as they sense your presence. Quietly grab the binoculars and, if you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of them! All of these aspects are what makes this place so unique and, with the right mindset, they’ll only enhance your overall experience. Guests have free range to fully utilize every aspect of the house. The hanging bed, wrap-around porch, indoor-outdoor shower and closet are at your full disposal. I have recently installed a kitchenette that has a sink, cooler for storing food/drinks, and a coffee maker (also capable of heating up water). Any and all goodies stocked in the house are there for your enjoyment. Here is a more comprehensive list of amenities and features that will be available to you: •Indoor/Outdoor Shower •Toilet with Overlaid Sink •Organic Shampoo/Conditioner •Towels •Ample Parking •Tiki Torch ‘Flashlights’ •Hanging Bed •Table and Chairs for Lanai •Binoculars •Several Books •Outlets (3-prong and USB) •Kitchen Sink •Coffee Maker •Clean Linens •Gramophone Music Player for iPhones •Cooler for Food/Drink •Card Game Guest interaction can be tailored to your needs. My goal is to make sure your stay is unforgettable so you can always contact me via phone or email. Because I do not live on the island year round, a local neighbor can assist you if you have any problems that need tending to. Upon your arrival I can arrange to have someone greet you and show you the property or simply stow away the key for your convenience. The choice, of course, is yours. Even though I am not on site, I can always be reached. Feel free to call/text/email me at any time during your stay should the unlikely event that a problem arises. I will immediately contact the proper authority to have the problem remedied. The treehouse is located at the end of a neighborhood street making it very private. It is set about 50 yards off the street behind a windy, jungle path further adding to your privacy. There are only about five full time neighbors scattered throughout the neighborhood so don't expect to see a lot of people. The treehouse is about 20 miles from Hilo, 23 miles from Pahoa, 12 miles from Keaau and 8 miles from Volcano. Volcano is the closest place for laundry, good restaurants and groceries, though you will pay a little more for the groceries than in Hilo or Keaau. I recommend you stop on your way in from Hilo. When you book I will include a guidebook that has the locations, hours and prices of local restaurants and grocery stores. There is quick access to highway 11 and it is 10 miles from Volcanoes National Park. Numerous opportunities for sightseeing and adventures are within a 40 minute drive of this treehouse paradise and they will be included in my guest guidebook as well. This is the ultimate spot for couples seeking romantic seclusion in the middle of a tropical jungle or individuals who want to escape the world. Unless you feel like hitchhiking, you will definitely need a rental car with high ground clearance to comfortably explore the surrounding areas and access the treehouse. While nothing is 'far' on the big island, everything is just a bit out of reach by foot... except of course for those lovely, yet dense, jungle strolls.

  • This is a magical place, you can't ignore your inner child when you're at the tree house. You have all the privacy in the world and it's a place where you truly connect with nature. Loved it!

  • We had a wonderful time at Kristie's beautiful tree house. The house and the location are quite spectacular! Not only did we enjoy the beautiful house in the wilderness but we also truly enjoyed the little things like the apt books and games she had left for us. My wife really enjoyed showering with the view of the wilderness 🤭. Also, special mention for her hospitality and ease of check-in and out, everything was very smooth. Would definitely recommend this experience! Thanks Kriste! 😃

  • Stay here. Just do it. If you love the outdoors and just getting way, this is the spot for you. Communication was a breeze and finding it was easy because she literally covered any questions/needs that could have come up. Beautiful spot.

  • Amazing place. 100 per cent would recommend. Super private and great romantic get a way. PICTURESQUE!! Great host too, organised and thoughtful

  • What an enchanting place! I am not an outdoors person, so this treehouse was the closest to camping I will ever come. Glamping is an understatement. Perfectly decorated, lovely touches such as brownies, robes, and postcards to send, and a sense of wonder waking up surrounded by lush forest, orchids, and a family of pigs and chickens. And the stars at night! The eco friendly utilities worked without a hitch, but we tried to use the electricity minimally to be sure we kept enough of a reserve. An SUV was definitely necessary to access the road to the tree house and I would recommend checking in during daylight hours to make getting situated easier. 15 minute drive to Volcano National Park, making this the perfect home base for exploring. Easy drive to Hilo.

  • This place is amazing! All we could hear at night was the rain and frogs, the shower is awesome, you can open the glass shades and you're pretty much showering in the jungle/forest, super quiet. It's all solar but we had no issues with it, easy to use and super comfortable. Perfect get-a-way.

  • This treehouse is like stepping into a Swiss Family Robinson themed Wes Anderson movie. It's easy to tell how much thought went into the build and design. Kristie's attention to detail makes living simply feel so luxurious. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a unique, blissful adventure.

  • The big island treehouse is something out of a dream! This place is magical. Kristie has included so many personal touches that really just go above and beyond. This treehouse is everything you need to find some peace and relaxation in the jungle paradise of Hawaii. Kristie’s directions to the place were easy to find using google maps and the gps coordinates. While it is off the grid it still surprisingly had decent cell service and internet service if you need it, but I suggest just turning off and enjoying the trip. I spent all day reading on the giant tree swing, watching the roosters and creatures of the forest. At night we found the birds singing a peaceful song to us as we went to sleep. I 10000% would suggest booking your stay here.

  • A 5 star Airbnb. Location is great, close to downtown for foods and grocery, but not far from the attractions. Space: It is super clean and there are lots of thoughtful touches provided by the host. The space is huge and would be great for a big family. Communication: Morris and Yuka are very helpful, everything including local tips and supermarket coupon are provided from our communication. I’d highly recommend Morris and Yuka’s place for whoever would like to visit Hilo.

    Caroline2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Morris is a five-star host only because they don’t make 10 stars! Morris was very attentive to our needs and showed a level of generosity that is rare in today’s world. We felt welcome and at ease with Morris immediately and it was very clear that he wanted everything to be just right for us....and it was! I recommend staying at this location without hesitation!

    Timothy2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We were 6 adults and 1 kid stayed for 2 days. When we arrived in, Moris welcomed us warmly. The house was big and clean. He prepared everything such as kid toys, full kitchen, washing machine, winter cloth, welcome frute breakfast and the small gift. We also liked outdoor bbq grill. It's little difficult to find the entry od house from the highway but we didn't suffer from the road noisy. We definitely recommend this house to everyone.

  • I had a wonderful time with my family! There were playground equipment for children aged 0 and 4 to be able to play with fun, and the response was quick and complete. I want to stay again!

  • We’ve stayed in a lot of Air B&Bs over the years but Morris was by far the most wonderful host we’ve met. Great communication, local tips, fruit and breakfast provided for the first day. The house has everything you could possibly need from beach equipment to coolers to a karaoke machine! Highly recommended.

    Rosie2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is a hostel with attentive consideration from the host. The house is very clean and there is no shortage for me.

    Sooji2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • We spent a great week at Morris and Yuka’s place in Keaau. We were amazed by the amenities in the house - it was extremely well stocked with everything you could need and then some! I always wish for a lighted magnifying makeup mirror (which is usually only found in really fine hotels) - well guess what! We were also amazed by the gifts of food that were waiting for us - fruit, coffee, candy, wine, bottled water, eggs, rolls, jam, butter, and sausage. I thought that was very generous. The listing was very clear and accurate about the road noise - this did not bother us, but it might bother some. There were also frog and bird noises, which, again, did not bother us. We liked that we could recycle and send our fruit and veggie scraps to the compost pile, like we do at home. The location was safe and convenient to Hilo and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Morris was a great communicator, and we corresponded frequently through Airbnb whenever I had questions. It was a great stay and a good getaway from the cold upstate NY winter. Mahalo to Morris and Yuka!

Our Retreat is a labor of our love and was built as such. A getaway to relax, hike the nearby beaches, forests, and volcanoes and to simply enjoy life. Our place is a peaceful spot completely off the grid in nature. It is 8 miles to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. You’ll love our place because of the location, the ambiance, and the outdoor space. Our goal was to bring the outdoors in and the indoors outside. Our place is good for couples and solo adventurers.
This beautiful peaceful gem is located 8 miles to the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The house is secluded off the road for privacy and to be as close to nature as possible. The house is elevated 15 feet but the bed elevates you 20 feet off the ground. It is quite a unique experience. Arrival You first arrive at a gravel driveway and a wood chipped winding path. You pass beside and under the Hapu’u Fern Tree tops and orchids as well as the tree canopy. The trail to our house is about 120 feet deep in seclusion. There are little pockets of ferns and flowers along the trail as well as a Ganesh and a Buddha keeping a peaceful eye on our little sanctuary. Downstairs Lanai You will find yourself on the lower deck/lanai. This lanai is surrounded by hanging plants and places to relax in your own private Zen. There is an 8-foot teak Balinese Bale' daybed to lounge in and it can be a place to relax that is also functional. During our travels to Bali, Indonesia one of our favorite memories is laying in a daybed surrounded by plants and nature, complete Zen and that is what we have re-created in Hawaii. This daybed is a beautiful space to be next to nature and relax, read a book, take a nap and enjoy life. Remember it is vacation time! Looking across from the daybed is a handmade teak bistro set to sip some coffee or tea, read a book or play a game. There are two half tables where you can make a cup of coffee or tea or pick up a bottled water. Downstairs bathroom The center walkway has two barn doors with separate bathroom and shower areas. The shower is a large space with a ten-foot ceiling and large shower "rainwater" nozzle that mimics the soft falling of rain. The shower is powered by solar and on-demand propane for heat. There is a bench to sit and relax and soak in the moment. With the forest in mind, the shower room has bamboo walls and hanging plants to create unique ambiance. The mist from the shower help feed the plants/orchids. There is cruelty-free and nature-friendly shampoo, conditioner, and soap provided. Toiletries in case you forgot any are provided in the bathroom. Across from the shower is the bathroom with woven bamboo walls and a handmade Koa wood wash basin, flushing toilet, mirror, vanity and toiletries for the shower and bathroom are provided in the baskets. In the center walkway, there is another handmade Koa wood wash basin. Upstairs Lanai: You are now winding up the stairs and you arrive to the upstairs Lanai. Another place to breathe and relax. As you explore upstairs, the covered upper deck/lanai catches the rainwater to turn into reusable shower and toilet water. The covered lanai gives you the chance to sit out in the rain forest and watch the rainforest replenish itself. The animals and trees become animated at different times of the day. At night you can stargaze. The furniture is inviting you to “sit and take a load off." There you can breathe in the forest and enjoy the scenery and views of the Hapu’u Fern Tree tops. Towering above you, 40-60 feet in height, are Ohia, Koa, Guava and Eucalyptus trees which comprise the tree canopy. There are wicker chairs with overstuffed cushions and a cozy footrest for two. There are side tables for drinks and snacks and a small table you can play cards on. At night the Coqui Frogs will serenade you with their mating songs from the trees. Bedroom: As you pass through the keyless entry window door you will find another gem. There is an airy feel due to 12 foot ceilings and cathedral style windows in the trusses along with three 4x8 foot windows. Then you will see our little gem of a bed: we are very proud of our own designed “perch platform bed” that nestles you 4 feet in the air. You will feel like you are perched in a tree. The comfy mattress makes for a perfect and tranquil night sleep. The view from the bed is a panoramic view from the 8x4 foot front bay window and on clear nights you can gaze at the stars through the cathedral style windows in front and behind the bed. Now it is your choice to watch stars, birds or the clouds from the bed. There is a built in closet within and beneath the bed where you can put your suitcases or hang your clothes. This bed has it all and we made it to simplify and organize your luggage. No messes, all hidden and contained in the semi walk in closet. On the sides of the bed are two sets of stairs and each side has their own charging USB station for your phone or tablet. Birds, amphibians and animals: Animals you may see in the gardens or in the treehouse: Coqui Frogs, a variety of lizards, Geckos, Jackson’s Chameleons, Endangered Pueo owls have been spotted intermittently at our property. The endemic black-billed ‘apapane, salmon-billed i’iwi, the white and brown ‘elepaio, and the yellow-green colored ‘amakihi are some of the forest birds of Hawaii that can be found. Additionally, feral pigs occasionally scamper about the forest floor but do not like human interaction. Pests: Mosquitoes. This is the rainforest so mosquitoes are common. We provide DEET and non-DEET bug sprays or you can bring your own. We do ask that you do not spray yourself while on our furniture or linens. It stains and is almost impossible to get out of linens. We love our house and we are sure you will as well for a Zen –like peaceful experience. The house is off-grid and self sufficient but tradeoffs come with being unique and off-grid. 1. The Rainforest. The rain forest name says it all. How unique is it to be in the United States and in a Rain Forest close to a National Park? The green you will be surrounded by is powered and fed by the rain. It rains 30% of all days. The forest rejuvenates and replenishes with every rain. Our little house lives off the rain catchment therefore we enjoy the rain in all aspects: It gives life; it gives us water. You can experience anything from sun, to mist to torrential downpour. The volcano helps with this ecological system and therefore it is a unique experience to be had but rainforests are not for everyone. 2. The Treehouse, it is 15 feet off the ground. If afraid of heights this is a mild view but might not be right for you. There are only 2 levels of sturdy stairs to climb. No ladder like other places but if any problems walking back 200 feet to our structure or climbing 2 flights of stairs, you may want to reassess staying here. You will need to carry your luggage back and up the stairs. We have a wagon for use but you will still need to haul the luggage or items you are bringing to the house. 3. The Rain. The rainwater catchment system provides water for the water faucets, shower and toilet. It is filtered but not sanitized and in the jungle it is unwise and unsafe to drink the water. We provide water for you to enjoy during your stay. If you consume large amounts of water you might want to bring some with you as well. 4. The Noise. The rain catchment water pumps do make a small amount of noise but only when in use for showers, sinks, and flushing the toilet. The rain falling off the tree canopy does make noises when falling from 40-60 feet and hitting the structure and covered canopy. Additionally, there is a water trap for the structure on the back wall that does make a soft noise while gathering the water when the rain is falling moderately hard. At night, the Coqui’s chirping/singing can be loud. We love the serenade as it drifts us off to sleep but some are bothered by the frogs chirping. During the day and at dusk the native beautiful songbirds can be loud while gathering food and communicating with each other. There are also neighborhood dogs that can be heard barking intermittently in the distance. The last potential "noisy" concern may be the stillness of a forest or the absence of noise which can bother some people that are not use to “unplugging” from technology. 5. Solar Power. The solar panels are located on the roof and batteries are located downstairs. When the skies are clear and sunny the panels gather sunlight and convert into energy but when overcast or raining the solar panels gather small amounts of energy. We have ample amounts but still limited energy. You can run your devices but must be aware of energy conservation because there is only so much stored per day and it is all dependent on the weather conditions and what you are consuming. No hairdryers or irons are allowed for this reason: too much energy consumption. We have battery operated and solar lights throughout the structure as well. Phones and tablets can be charged at anytime with USB ports but laptops should be charged sparingly. 6. The Bugs. Mainly mosquitoes. They are not big but they are present in the rain forest. Hawaii does have mosquito borne illnesses, but mostly on the other side of the island in the Captain Cook area. Being in a rain forest you do need mosquito awareness. Wear mosquito repellant that we supply to you. If you are visiting Hawaii I would suggest buying your own bug spray and sunblock, you will need it throughout the island. With all these considerations…we absolutely love our house and find it to be tranquil while energizing us physically and mentally for the day. We love living in nature but being close to all things. 7. This treehouse has no cooking facilities. We encourage our guests to taste the different flavors that the island has to offer. • 8 miles (13 minutes) to Hawai’i Volcano National Park • 12.2 miles (18 minutes) to Keaau • 20.4 miles (33 minutes) to Hilo • 21.8 miles (35 minutes) to Rainbow Falls • 23.5 miles (35 minutes) to Pahoa • 34.8 miles (51 minutes) to the Lava Viewing area at Kalapana (no direct route) • 36 miles (58 minutes) to Akaka Falls • 45.3 miles (54 minutes) to Naalehu/South Point
The treehouse is on a quiet gravel road a little over a mile from the highway. The nearest neighbors are a few acres away in all directions. It is remote but close to all things. We have great neighbors but they love their privacy as we love ours. Orchid Isle Estates is surrounded by tree canopies and a myriad of orchids. There are some great restaurants in the town of Volcano as well as in Hilo, Kea'au and Pahoa. Please see our guide at the house for more details There is a little local store, Hirano's, close by for small items and a quick bite. There are two stores in Volcano, a big grocery store in Kea'au and more in Hilo. Farmers Markets are amazing here and no matter what the day you can probably find one open. I have a guide to farmers markets in my book in the treehouse. Our guide to the island sights is our personal opinion to find off the wall touristy and untouristy areas of interest. Beaches, farmers markets, waterfalls, hikes and lava tubes are all contained in the book at the treehouse. I also have printed out guides for you to take as well.
  • I surprised my boyfriend for his 50th. We both fell in love with the treehouse. We felt like we were in an enchanted forest. The bed was super comfy and having coffee was a plus. Thank you for sharing this beautiful place :)

    Tammy2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • What an experience. Loved the little details about this place- the hot shower and variety of soaps was a treat. Tea at night and coffee in the morning made it very comfortable. I would recommend this to the adventurous types who are comfortable with the outdoors!

    Katie2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • This place was the highlight of my trip. Very cute and full of nature. I wish there was more light in the bottom or at least wifi coz we had no network at all.

  • Amazing tree house experience. Loved listening to the rain all night. Short drive to Volcanoes National Park. We brought drinking water but it was not needed as Britt and Michael had already provided bottled water, as well as many other amenities to enjoy this beautiful tree house in the jungle.

    Anna2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • This treehouse is the perfect getaway and such a cool place! Definitely the place to stay if you’re looking for a place that’s quiet, serene, and unique (being tucked away in the rainforest...very neat!). Brittany and Michael were great hosts that responded quickly and provided lots of helpful information prior to checking in. They have a book with recommendations and places to see or try that we found to be very helpful as we navigated the Big Island. We spent a lot of time out and about during the day and coming back here in the evening was so relaxing and peaceful. Highly recommend this place to anyone spending time on the island!

    Chelsea2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • This was such an incredible experience. Brit and Michael's place was honestly such an amazing experience! It's even more beautiful than the pictures. It truly exceeded our expectations. Wish we had booked more days here as we celebrated our honeymoon. It was so magical and so peaceful! As soon as we arrived, we noticed how clean it was and the bed was so comfortable! The road is really tight and had difficulty reversing. Other than that. Everything else was exceptional! HANDS DOWN THE BEST PLACE TO STAY IN VOLCANO AREA!

    Oscar2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay. Was a way cooler experience than we anticipated. Relaxing and off the grid. Everything was so clean and welcoming. Bed was super comfortable and the rain at night was peaceful and calming. The seating areas both upstairs and downstairs were so wonderful to just sit and visit. Would love to come stay again when we are in the area!!

    Robin2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • If you are looking for something special and some lone time to yourself, this place is perfect! I loved it! Thank you

Our Tiny Tropical Treehouse is a very special space full of creativity and beauty. Custom built by an artist, this eco-house is flooded with natural sunlight, rich with wood accents, and inextricably connected to nature. It is ideal for couples and individuals looking for a private retreat nestled away in the jungle. Adventurers, relaxers, writers, and artists will enjoy staying here, a mere 18 mi from all Volcano National Park has to offer and 20 mi from downtown Hilo.
Tiny treehouse, swinging bridge, and zooming zipline... oh my! This rental is one of a kind. The house boasts an eco-friendly footprint to travelers, budding botanical garden, unique custom interior, and a getaway retreat from busy life. In 2016 Caroline and Melissa embarked upon building this off-grid house. With some serious planning, a hint of overconfidence, and a lot of support, we hit the ground running. At Home Depot we were serendipitously roped into an interview for HGTV's show "Tiny Paradise." The film crew showed up at our door a week later! From then the project took on a whole new energy. We embarked upon new murals, art projects, and all kinds of visual eye candy to make sure every corner of the house was the highest quality we could muster. We hope you enjoy the finished product and all the love and time that went into custom making every inch of this space! If you want to check out the episode we are episode #2 "Tiny Hawaiian Hideaway" in the HGTV series "Tiny Paradise." Below is a description of what you can expect when you visit: Follow the red cinder trail through the stunning botanical array that envelops our off-grid tiny house. Ascend 8 feet up into the air for the cool breeze and a better view of the surrounding flora and fauna. You've arrived! With a total of 13 windows and glass doors, you enter into the comfort and luxury of the home but your view extend hundreds of feet into the surrounding jungle of Ohia and Hapu'u. Once inside you will see dozens of wood accents, from our high-backed log chair, to our Koa Wood Balinese style couch. The loft is held up with posts made from Ohia trees sourced from our own property. We made the loft handrail, coffee table, and hand-towel hangers from trees that had to be cleared during the construction of our house. Enjoy lounging on the expansive Balinese couch while you bird watch, or kick your feet up onto the trunk as you become immersed in a good read. On your way to the kitchen meander past the stained glass window depicting a cardinal, we coincidentally have two males and one female on the property! Also keep an ear out for baby hawk in the early spring. You enter the kitchen and will be blown away by the design of the floating dish racks. The custom Chocolate Albezia wood slab counter top shimmers, as does the glass sink basin and hand blown pendant lights hanging overhead. Relax at the kitchen bar and sip on your morning coffee as you watch the sunrise strike leaves and dew, setting them off into stunning shades of green, red, orange, and yellow. Eat your lunch while pondering the tiny mushrooms and vibrant moss growing on a nearby tree. Drink a glass of wine while you stare at the milky way and the moon. Tucked away in a dark corner of the house is the lava themed bathroom. Enter the bathroom and feel the cool natural stone underneath your feet, be reminded of that lava tube you explored yesterday or will crawl around in today. The main volcanic mural, created with naturally smoothed lava rocks, will captivate your eyes as you shower. The fiery glass sink, with a rough field of lava swirling around it, is a focal point of the lava spilling into your lavatory experience. A local female artist made the themed art piece hanging on the wall; illustrating traditional canoes, hula, Pele (the volcano goddess) and ancient rituals. The sliding barn door and tinted openable window envelop you in the private surreal feel of the space. Enjoy! It's all yours! Before you head to bed you absolutely must make your way across the swinging bridge to arguably the best part of the house. The treehouse! Supported by two rows of sister trees, the deck is a magical place to lay down and look up at the sun shining through the leaves, get close to Lehua blossoms or a herd of blooming orchids, and watch the stars glittering through the branches. We enjoy eating every meal we can out there and doing work while lounging in the reclinable chair. If you're visiting with a romantic partner (eyebrow wiggle), there was a psychology study that found people misattribute the excitement of a swinging bridge to the attraction they feel for a potential love interest. So go on, get your partner on the bridge with you and spice things up. Get your heart beating faster... is it the bridge?... is it your partner? I guess we'll never know. When all the excitement has passed and you're all tuckered out, climb the space efficient right-left ladder staircase to the loft. Wiggle into the comfort and luxury of our memory foam mattress, feel it envelop your body, and then never get up ;). The loft is cozy, but it's a room with a view. Along the headboard a 10 inch window encourages you to stargaze from the comfort of your bed, at one of the clearest skies in the world! I personally love laying on my side staring out the openable window and looking at the silhouettes of the surrounding forest contrasted against the starry night sky. Under the warmth of the comforter enjoy the cool mountain breeze (1900 feet of elevation) as you drift off to sleep. What else can we say? This place is paradise and heaven on earth and our pride and joy. We hope you will love it as much as we do! ********************************************************** The "Eco" in our house: We hope you will love the artistic luxury of the space and re-define what is possible to create with reclaimed materials and an off-grid lifestyle. We built this house ourselves and one of our main goals was for guests to enjoy being off-grid and see first hand how lovely it can be to go green. We adore nature (if you couldn't tell ;) ) and so it was very important for us to have the smallest footprint possible throughout the building process, therefore we hunted, hunted and kept hunting! All 5 of the huge 4 ft x 6 ft windows connecting the interior space to the natural beauty found outside, were reclaimed. We scored on the 2 glass doors because Ace Hardware in Kea'au was de-installing them from their store front. We managed to give dying surfboards new life in our functional art piece on the treehouse deck. We collected lava rocks from local beaches to create the volcano mural that defines the bathroom and the red cinder trail was locally sourced from a volcanic red cinder cone. The entryway mosaic was made possible by broken tiles that were going to be thrown away at Floor Decor in Hilo. The hardwood floors came from my uncle's hardwood floor business after a sample batch for a hotel wasn't the exact color that the interior designers were going for (lucky us). Our water catchment tank and stove top are second-hand and we are utterly proud of it all! We hope you remember the beauty of this place & bit of land long after you are gone, to us, "eco" can also mean comfy!
We are situated in the Ohia jungle. Throughout a day only a handful of cars will drive by. (Once, we had lumber delivered in the middle of the road because we didn't have a driveway yet.) From the house only one house is visible in the back distance but you can occasionally hear our front neighbors. There are abandoned vehicles down the road but that's not uncommon in rural neighborhoods on the Big Island.
  • Adventure awaits! Clean-thoughtful touches-artistic and serene. Book and enjoy for yourself!

  • One of the best Airbnb’s I have stayed in and affordable! The whole experience was very easy!

  • What a treat! Fantastic, off-grid getaway near VNP. Would highly suggest 4-wheel drive, especially with rain around. Gravel roads with deep puddles are a little rough to get through, but very cool once you arrive!

  • This was an awesome place to stay! Super clean, Melissa was there to answer any questions we had (We got lost because we didn't follow directions well) but she had no problem helping us. Would definitely stay here again and we highly recommend this to anyone thinking about staying near the volcano park or just trying to get away for a few days.

The Puna district is a huge triangle area encompassing territory between Hilo, Volcano, Pahoa and Kalapana. Kilauea's latest eruption began on May 3, 2018 with lava flowing continuously until August 6, 2018. The affected Puna area, in the southeast corner of the island comprises ONE PERCENT of the island of Hawaii, which is larger than all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined. We are in UPPER PUNA and had No Lava. Pele will determine her future timeline, longevity and destination path. View new lava fields by air or by hiking to our newest black sand beach, Pohoiki. We have additional information on the Kilauea Flow in our Profile. The area also contains the largest remaining untouched Ohia forests in the islands, currently being threatened by Rapid Ohia Death as scientist scramble to discover the source and cure. This is a unique area and is relatively undeveloped maintaining it's origin. Agriculture is still a large part of the subsistence economy. We are located close enough to Hilo, Kea'au and Volcano Village for provisions and dining but still a world away from the fast track at the resorts. -Historical Hilo town offers museums, tours, local peeps, markets, craft fairs, Queen Liliokalani Park, zoo, arboritium, caves, gold course, art and local grinds/foods. -Locals Beach Parks: In Keaukaha=Onekahakaha, Carlsmith, Richardson, Lokoaka Wilderness, Leleiwi, Black Sands in Naalehu, Green Sands/Papakolea at South Point -Snorkel: Kepo'okalani, Kumukahi, Keaukaha area. -AND a long list of trails, hikes, botanical gardens, parks, waterfalls and of course, lava. The previous are East Hawaii accessible for one-day adventures returning leisurely to the comforts of Eco Hale. -Reference books and maps are provided for your use.
  • Good location for the thrill-seeker looking to stay in the rainforest. Thoughtful touches, including the Japanese soaking tub which was delightful. When issues did come up, like the hot water heater and the electricity going on a brief hiatus, they were dealt with promptly. This is not a resort, it is definitely an off-grid jungle location! Full kitchen repertoire to cook up a meal. Space is cozy and for more than 2 people would not be ideal. They were very attentive to our needs. Very close to Volcanoes National park.

  • Stay off grid in a tropical jungle 🌺 the hosts are super gracious, really kind and thoughtful and we really enjoyed our stay with them at the Eco Hale. The little bungalow is super private with lush landscaping - just a bit cold at the time of year we went (feb) but Kaeo leaves sooo many amenities to make sure you stay warm. The tropical noises at night mixed with rain was probably the most peaceful noise ever experienced. You are about 30 mins outside hilo, 45 outside the Volcano National Park and 2 hours away from Kona but in general the island is huge so you are going to drive a distance to get to any particular place. We enjoyed our stay and would def recommend for luxurious off grid experience.

    Kostadena2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • It’s all true. These folks go out of their way with special touches that most hosts skip. Do they have to supply a bottle of champagne for your anniversary? No, but they do! Does Keao have to bake you breakfast treats and give great local tips? No, but she does so with love. I could go on & on but let’s just say it’s a stay in a jungle paradise at your favorite auntie’s or cousin’s - everything is there for you, including total privacy. We loved it. And then, for their generosity and wisdom ❤️🤙🏻

    Nancy2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay for all your travels on the Hilo side. Easy access to Volcanoes National Park and Hilo too. Small space but comfortable and well laid out in a beautiful garden setting.

    Steven2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • We're generally not big on superlatives, but cannot write an honest review of Kaeo's and Karl's Eco Hale without employing a few. Picture yourself on the lanai in a romantic hut, in the heart of a garden-like rain forest, enjoying a breakfast of various fresh fruit (some of which you can pick within a few feet), homemade cranberry-walnut bread, freshly ground locally grown coffee, listening to the tropical birds (and, of course, the Coqui) with dappled sunshine lighting up the scene. It's difficult if not impossible to come up with a better start to a day. Now envision yourself on the same lanai as evening approaches, sipping wine and snacking on (or dining, we chose to bring dinner "home" most nights to have more time to soak up the peace), then filling the furo with warm water and climbing in for a soul soothing soak. From the warmest of welcomes by Kaeo, to the delicious pupu she provided our first evening, to her little touches in decorating both amazing and authentic, it is an extraordinary experience in a perfect location to explore the island. Kaeo is one of the sweetest and most thoughtful souls we have had the privilege to meet. We've already agreed that we'll return for a third visit with her and Eco Hale.

    Mark2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • This is an amazing space in the rain forest, surrounded by trees and flowers. The Eco Hale is well thought out, comfortable, and cozy. Kaeo thinks about every detail that you could imagine. We had three wonderful nights in Eco Hale, listening to rain falling and having dinner in the rain forest. Definitely the highlight of our trip!

    Shuyue2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is an amazing place! We loved everything. Kaeo and Karl are the best hosts ever and very sweet.

    Jacco2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Eco Hale for four wonderful too short days and nights, and we LOVED every minute of our time there. Kaeo and Karl have created a paradise in a rain forest for travelers. Their attention to detail is impeccable. The whole place, indoors and outside, is sparkling clean, comfortable, and filled with little nooks of beauty everywhere. We felt sad to have to leave when our time was up, and the morose feeling lasted awhile. If we can ever get back to Hawaii, we definitely know where we are staying then! As to a few particulars, Eco Hale is several miles off the main road between Volcano National Park and Hilo, but the drivein and out is not unduly. The overall location is advantageous. We LOVED living off-grid while there. There was never a shortage of water ...hot or cold... or electricity. The bed was so comfortable! All was exceptional.

Make this hawaiian home, bordering serene Makuu Homestead, surrounded by an opulent natural tropical garden, your special retreat. Three miles from the ocean, and a mile from the main highway, Hawaiian Jungle Hangout offers easy access to eastside highlights--30 minutes from Pohoiki bay (newest black sand beach/part of the 870 acres added from new lava last winter), 35 minutes from Volcano National Park, 20 minutes from Hilo airport, 10 minutes from Keaau town, and 10 minutes from Pahoa Village. The hangout offers 1600 sq. feet of living space. A full kitchen, two bedrooms, plus a den which has a sleeper sofa that opens to a queen round, in a comfortable home on a lush acre of tropical fruits and native plant. Explore the garden within lava rock flows. A memorable place to make your home during your vacation or business stay. Also available on the property is asian fused tropical Hawaiian Jungle Hut. Next to the main house with a separate entrance, the hut is perfect for a couple or single guest, having it's own full bathroom, living room, inside washer and dryer, and kitchenette with a tiki bar. I am usually there, but the hut is also wireless and cable connected and available as a separate rental whenever I'm away.
  • The place is a gem. Lovely house and area just around the corner from Hilo. Liz was caring and had lots of advices and tips. Would love to return. Mahalo

    Manuel2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Liz's place is fantastic for a couple/family/group of friends who want to just relax in a large space. Very close to Hilo and some nice restaurants the other way (Pahoa?). Liz was extremely responsive via text message and was able to send the housekeeper when we needed help! Mahalo!

  • Secluded comfortable roomy house includes washer/dryer very comfortable

    Duane2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • We are so happy we stayed at Liz's place! The house was on a beautiful private rainforest road (her other rental is attached but we never saw or heard the other renters during our stay). We got there super late but check in is via keypad so it worked out. The house had so much of what we needed. A coffee maker, plenty of coffee filters, cooking oil, spices, enough towels and plates/silverware for all of us, and aloe vera. It's about 15 minutes from Target and other stores, about 2 houes to the Kona side, 20 from airport, and 40 from Volcano national park, but the drive everywhere was incredibly beautiful so we did not mind driving everyday. We saw about 2 geckos every night, we did not mind it but they are unavoidable, so keep in mind if that bothers you. AC worked fine and I was able to sleep through the loud nightly rain but 2 of the people in my group were woken up often from it. So again just keep in mind that if you are a light sleeper you will need ear plugs. Would stay here again and highly recommend!

    Deyanira2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful place that is clean and quiet with 360 degree views of lush, green forest.

    Pete2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • We got a lot of information before we arrived. Liz explained everything around the house and sent us a lot of information about the area. When we arrived at the house after a long day all of us were so happy because the house was huge and had more than we needed. We really enjoyed staying at the hangout!

    Kornelia2019-11-28T00:00:00Z
  • Great home great location. Loved listening to the sounds of the jungle at night! The communication was a bit much. Too many emails and details. Didnt need to know which cupboard cups were in ect as I can figure all that stuff out so had a hard time finding the time on my trip to sit and read through all the pages of emails. Also bbq wasnt usable as it was covered in mold but other then that the trip and house was fantastic. Loved the decor. Had a great feel and felt like home away from home. Thanks Liz!

  • There are a ton of reviews and I read a bunch of them before choosing Liz's place. So, I won't restate everything that has already been shared that is great about this Airbnb. Read the previous reviews for details! We loved staying here. If you are used to the whole Hawaii resort scene on "the dry side" of the island, you might not like the "rainforest side". We loved it! And it was a nice change from the whole "resort thing". I highly recommend Liz's place!

A place for solitude, rest and relaxation, from which to enjoy the wonders of Puna and the east side of the Big Island. Come experience the raw beauty of a lava eruption. The land has been transformed. Fissure 8 and the hardened lava flow is a 10- minute walk from our home. This is destruction & creation; We and the surrounding community of Puna have been transformed by this experience Our guests leave restored and in awe of the magic of this area.
Welcome to Paradise. Our home sits upon a hilltop overlooking the Pacific in the distance. One hears the rustle of palm leaves, tropical birds and coqui frogs at night. The setting is truly beautiful and nurturing with a spacious lawn, fresh tropical fruits and vegetables, caressing breezes and even frequent rainbows. There is a deep sense of peace here. You will be renting a self-contained apartment located on the bottom floor of our home. The wrap-around lanai (porch) overlooks a lush and gorgeous property with ever-present sunshine and cool breezes. There is comfortable porch furniture, a large new barbeque and a wide hammock in the yard. The apartment has two bedrooms, each with its own queen-size bed. There is a full bathroom with walk-in shower, as well as a private, outdoor shower. Between the two bedrooms are a sitting area and kitchenette. The kitchenette includes a sink, full refrigerator, microwave, electric cooktop with two burners, toaster-oven, Keurig coffee maker, French Press, Magic Bullet (shake maker) and all necessary kitchen utensils and condiments (e.g., coffee, tea, salt, pepper, olive oil, basic spices). Our home is centrally located in lower Puna. The rustic town of Pahoa is five miles to the north; the Pacific is five miles to the south. There are many intentional communities a few miles from the house: e.g., Hawaiian Sanctuary (yoga, permaculture, and Hawaiian culture). Our property is 40 minutes from the attractions of Hilo and about one hour from Volcano National Park. North of Hilo are the awesome Akaka Falls and the spectacular Hawaii Tropical Gardens. One could easily spend a week here and not see everything. Guests are encouraged to use us as a resource in planning their stay. We can recommend the best places to go swimming, dancing, yoga, massage, etc. There are a rich variety of places to eat in the area, which are included in a resource book (translated into Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Korean) that we have created for our guests. We love where we live and enjoy sharing our excitement. Sitting on the lanai or strolling on the property, one experiences a dance of tropical weather, an interplay of bright sunshine, billowy, drifting clouds, soft rain showers, and the sensual feel of trade winds. Make this place a home base for your exploration of lower Puna and the east side of Big Island. The price includes the following Hawaiian taxes: Transient Accommodations Tax: 10.4% General Excise Tax: 4.0% No security deposit is required.
In our opinion, Puna is the most fascinating and lush area of Big Island. From Kalapana to Kopoho, from the Red Road to Pahoa--you will be experiencing the richness of living in a tropical rainforest. This is the furthest eastern part of the Hawaiian Islands and has a special place in Hawaiian lore. It attracts those who are adventurous, seeking to expand their spirits, and desiring to live in congruence with nature. It is our belief that there are a very high percentage of mindful people who live here.
  • First off they are goals ok!!! They property it self is so amazing! Everything you would need they provides. From chargers, bathroom amenities, a tour book, even provided eggs, bread, and fruit from their garden. They even have a washer and dryer for your use! The patio is so nice to sit and relax at night and the bistro lights adds just the right touch. It’s so peaceful just listening to the bird sitting out there early in the mornings! The beds were so comfortable. Honestly Robert was so nice and inviting, and the place is amazing highly recommend.

  • We had the best stay here. Directions were super simple to get there. Konrad welcomed us and showed us around the property. They supplied us with all the essentials and more. The bed we slept in was very comfortable. Great local tips in the book for where to eat and things to do. They are very easy to communicate with and happy to answer questions. Hope to be staying here on the next trip! Highly recommend Konrad and Robert's place for your trip!

    Julia2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had an incredible stay at Konrad and Robert's place - if you are looking for a place to decompress and experience the natural beauty and history of the Big Island, we highly recommend staying here! Konrad and Robert left us everything that we could have possibly needed to feel like we were at our own home, including fresh fruit from their garden and some items to make breakfast. We also appreciated their recommendations for food and things to do in the area (all organized in a binder with guidebooks for additional reference). Coming back at night from a day of exploring to the sounds of coqui frogs and occasional light rain was magical, and we sat on the lanai every morning with our coffee enjoying the sunrise and the view of their property. We would love to return some day and hope that other visitors enjoy their stay as much as we did. Konrad and Robert, thank you for being such thoughtful, wonderful hosts!

  • If you are wondering if you should stay here - the answer is yes. Don't hesitate, book it! The area is great in general, but staying here with Konrad and Robert made it truly divine! Upon our arrival they greeted us in person, and had prepared an extraordinary fruit bowl, and set us up with bread, eggs, creamer, etc! The home itself is stylish, comfortable, and cozy. Beds are great! Robes were provided and all the towels you could ever need. The porch is divine, and is where we spent all of our evenings and mornings. The hammock swings are very comfortable, and the full exterior dining table has room for everyone! The kitchen is perfect for preparing home cooked meals and there is a grill (imagine grilled pineapple at sunset 😍) I haven't even mentioned my very favorite part yet! The outdoor shower. This is a divine sunrise and sunset experience. There is also a beautiful indoor shower, but the outdoor one is spectacular! The binder in the house had great local recommendations for meals, experiences and we got some of our best tips from this! The home is situated on stunning grounds with manicured gardens! It is also located very near to the 2018 lava flow, which Robert reminded us to be respectful when visiting as there have been issues with tourists coming in to see it. He told us we could state that we were his guests if someone asked, and that made us feel very comfortable. Other highlights: came fully stocked in regards to shampoo/conditioner/etc. It had a washer and dryer with soap/etc. Rumba to clean the floors! Hands down one of the best experiences our group has ever had traveling. Amazing job guys!!

    Alyssa2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • The place is a beautiful and quiet home with lovely hosts! Robert greeted us kindly and has nice suggestions on where to go. I would definitely recommend!

    Jessica2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Robert and Konrad are thoughtful hosts. Pāhoa is wicked cool we just loved the vibe and local recommendations our hosts provided. Hope to be back again soon. The place is clean and beautiful. Amazing landscaping and so incredible to see the results of the 2018 lava so nearby. We kept saying to each other every morning “another day in paradise.” ❤️❤️❤️

    Bethany2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Robert’s place was amazing lovely stay. Love the fruit basket! Unit is attached to the main house. Host was very accommodating we arrived really late and he stay up and wait for us. Since we didn’t know the gate needs to be open to get in. Beautifully landscape. Definitely a hidden gem. Wish we were there longer.

    Rose2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • A real corner of PARADISE !! Everything was perfect, from the reception to our departure. They made us a nice basket of local fruit and we had enough to make good coffee and breakfast. PERFECT!! You have to see the neighborhood with its lava flow and the cracks that still smoke !! WOW

    Angela2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is pretty much perfect for 2 persons. There's a small kitchen to cook small meals in, a great hot water shower, a small sofa, bean bags for sitting around, even 2 lanais! It always feels welcoming, peaceful, and warm, which is exactly what you'd want to come back to after a day of exploring this awesome bit of land. It's close enough to Hilo for a convenient drive away, but just far enough to be surrounded by lush greens by day, and stars by dark night. Also keep an eye out for magnificent neon green lizards with hot pink stripes who hang at the lanai. Anzu and Bill are perfect hosts - welcoming, full of helpful information about things to do, and also gives a lot of space. It's one of the best places I've stayed in through Airbnb, so wld totally recommend this!

    Jac2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • This place is great! A cute little cabin with a little distance between the main house and the cabin to keep things private. Bill and Anzu are great hosts who made an effort to give recommendations for things to do on the island that I might have missed otherwise. The cabin has everything you need for a comfortable stay, and the two decks (one out front, and one behind the cabin) are great for taking in the beautiful greenery. They also provide snorkelling gear and beach towels. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a peaceful stay a little ways out of the city.

    Jordan2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is so relaxing. The surrounding plants and cool breeze with floral scents made our vacation week the best we ever had. No television was a real plus.

    Arlene2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Tucked away from the city, this is a wonderful place to feel like you're hanging out in a tree house. I was only there briefly, but enjoyed the stars and sounds of nature. Wonderful hospitality!

    Katie2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful and peaceful. Location is perfect for accessing Hilo and the National Park.

    Danielle2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • Peaceful and calm house in a big garden. My kids loved to stroll around. Also Anzu and Bill, which are living close, are very kind and helpful. It is a place where we would come back!

    Julia2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • Would gladly recommend Anzu and Bill's lovely cabin near Hilo! It's a beautiful, cozy space with every amenity. They were very friendly and helped settle us in.

This little screened-in, open-air Hale is nestled in a native Ohia rainforest between Hilo & Pahoa. The Hale is completely off-the-grid, uses solar power (generator backup) and has rain catchment. Private outdoor bathroom and shower. Secure, covered parking available. There is no kitchen and no refrigeration, but there is a camping stove and utensils plus a cooler to store all food - if your items are perishable, bring ice!
  • I was already excited to stay at this spot, but walking up to Cary's place nestled in the rain forest was magical. Cary is a traveler herself, so each item in this cozy, open-air ohana was clearly carefully chosen. I cooked most meals on the camp stove, loved the outdoor shower, and the bed was super comfortable. Cary was very thoughtful about giving me privacy, but was also very welcoming and provided some great local recommendations for hikes and beaches to explore. I'm so grateful that she's created this magical spot for travelers to visit, and that I got to spend a few nights there. Mahalo!!

Neighborhood overview The neighborhood is very quiet and peaceful and the Bungalow is set in a rural area.
  • We thought the bungalow was wonderful! It was clean and felt remote which made it very peaceful. The only con is that it is at least a 10 minute drive to anything, even further for Hilo or volcano national park- just something to keep in mind.

    Megan2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Cute, clean, and cozy bungalow. Feeling of seclusion greets you, and a few geckos 🦎 About halfway between Hilo and Pahoa. Nicely equipped. Friendly hosts. Would recommend.

  • The house was phenomenal! The neighbourhood is so peaceful and it just takes you to a different reality. Definitely a good house to star gaze (for those of you who are into astrology) if you’re looking to get away from your everyday routine, this house is the perfect place to be!

  • This bungalow is a perfect home base for a few days in and around Hilo. It is tucked away from other homes, so you feel like there's nobody else around. There are no street lights on the road, which made for incredible stargazing. They also provide snorkels, beach towels, and beach chairs. It was also so easy to get to and from the airport, and only about 40 minute drive from Volcanoes National Park. This spot is a gem!

Small artistic space with minimal kitchen, bathroom and sleeping loft. There are 2 queen size beds. Surround by tropical rainforest Within 14 miles of Hilo and 20 miles to Kilauea Volcano. Totally off grid, Power is all solar and there is no WiFi... cooking and hot water is made possible with gas. There are peacocks and parrots on the property, so it can get noisy, but most people enjoy the “tropical rainforest sounds” Access is by rental car.
The house is private with lots of tropical plants and free ranging peacocks. Beaches, Lava viewing, and exotic local farmers markets are all within 10-30 minutes drive.
  • Mara was lovely to communicate with. We ran into a small issue while staying in the property and Mara was always ready to help out. The property is in a lovely spot surrounded by thick nature. The path there is clear and the animal sounds were ever-present and relaxing. This was a true natural retreat, it was exactly what I needed. The peacocks and other animals were visible and wandering around the property. The space is also much bigger than the photos made it seem. There was plenty of room to exist, the two of us didn't feel claustrophobic or cramped at all. This might be due to the design of the house, it feels much larger than it is.

    Timothy2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing Inspirational space! Stay here if you can :) A “glamping” experience.

    Jai2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • A little piece of paradise in the middle of the jungle. You are sourrounded by nothing but nature and in the morning, the evening and during the day the animals will give a concert just for you. Thank you Mara for an amazing stay!

    Janina2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful nature experience in the middle of the rainforest! Original, natural, sustainable, eventful! Everything as described and expected! An experience especially at night! A great concert of the rainforest animals! (At home people buy a CD with these songs and here it is included;)) In the morning you are greeted by a magnificent flock of birds and peacocks! The house is completely solar powered, so save electricity :) Great! Very romantic in the evening by candlelight! Due to the open design (hardly any windows, open due to fly screens), the humid rainforest smells and wind blows through the house. Close to Hilo and Vulcano area. Great communication with hostess with good tips!

    Marika2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • What a creative space! I LOVED the feeling of the property, the bathtub, and being in the elements. Mara is a very sweet woman and lovely host. As a recommendation for future guests bring earplugs because the Koke Frogs can be really loud at night. I’ll also note there are not a lot of cooking amenities. The place was lovely though and for a great price!

    Megan2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • The place we went to was more than what we expected. You could very much see that they cared about the property. The hobbit house was very artistic and alive. Every moment there was a get away from the world. Very private and magical. If you want a true Hilo Hawaii rainforest experiance, this is the place to be.

    Kayla2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • This great hideaway is full of life and an easy jaunt to Hilo. For a small house, it is quite spacious due to the layout. Plenty of hot water for showers. The owner is right near by, but it seems like there isn't anyone for miles. There is a French press for making coffee, so be familiar with them before going. We loved the birds on the property and the rain forest creatures.

    Sharon2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • This is a really fun spot. You’re right in the middle of the rainforest, so you get all the sounds of the jungle, but you’re nice cozy in a comfortable space. There’s a cool loft and everything needed to be comfortable and unwind at the end of the day.

  • Our stay at Mark's place was great! Excellent communication both before and during our stay. Very clean and attractive space, with a great bathroom and strong wifi. We slept very well there. We loved hearing the frogs (?) at night. He offers beach chairs for use, which we took advantage of. If you can, bring a filtered water bottle, as the drinking water near Hilo (and on the Big Island, in general) isn't the best. We found the location to be great. It's a great spot for getting to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Uncle Robert's, Hilo, and beyond. We would gladly return.

  • What a GREAT place, I LOVED it! Location is perfect to check out the 2018 lava flow and the beautiful old & new beaches, it's also close to Hilo & Volcano National Park. Very clean, very comfy bed, large bath, little kitchenette with everything you need, awesome "outdoor" living room and even a little lanai in the beautiful garden. You'll hear birds & frogs, it's so peaceful and quiet :) I ABSOLUTELY loved staying here and will for sure book it again next time. Mark lives on the property and is always available. It was very nice meeting you, mahalo you for having me :)

The style is light bright and upscale, the high ceilings are finished natural wood and there is an archway that adds to the house's unique beautiful feel.

Hale Pama (House of Palms) is located in Hawaiian Paradise Park, conveniently and centrally located to quickly access the sights and attractions of the Big Island's east coast.
Hale Pama (House of Palms) is located in Hawaiian Paradise Park, conveniently and centrally located to quickly access Hilo with it's historic old town, restaurants, farmer's markets, museums and the tropical gardens and sights of the Big Island's east coast. Hosts and owners Kathy and Charles Wood, have purposely created a guest house to deliver a resort-like level of comfort, amenities, privacy and location to enhance your exploration of Hawaii's Big Island. Hale Pama is nestled within a small Ohia forest, populated with palms and tropical plants, located privately away from the host's main home, also on the same property. When you're not out exploring the Big Island, you can relax in comfort for the extremely affordable cost per night of Hale Pama. Constructed in 2016, Hale Pama has been purposely designed for comfort year round. An interior space of 500 square feet provides comfortable accommodation for three adults. Unlike most construction in Hawaii, Hale Pama is thoroughly insulated for quiet and comfort. A coated concrete floor remains cool year round. Ceiling fans are provided in the bedroom, living area and on each lanai. The main bedroom will be configured as two twin beds or one king bed to meet your preference before your arrival. A Serta sofa bed is provided for a third guest. Air conditioning is now available by guest request via a mini-split heat pump system (effective Aug 10, 2017). Due to the high cost of electricity in Hawaii and in our efforts to keep our daily rental rate as low as possible, there is a $3.00 daily electrical surcharge for use of the air conditioning/dehumidifying system. Most of the time air conditioning will not be required and the ceiling fans will maintain your comfort. Guests electing for AC make payment on arrival or on a daily basis. Big Island visitors come to explore and relax, but more and more our world is connected. Hale Pama is served by solid Verizon and ATT wireless service. High speed internet service is provided at no additional charge by wifi. For those evenings when you want to relax and watch a movie, you can choose a title from our DVR library or from the premium movie and entertainment channels on DISH Network or streaming video from Amazon, including HBO, and Netflix on a 48" flat screen 4K UHDTV. If you prefer to prepare your own meals, you may do so efficiently and quickly. A small refrigerator, microwave, convection counter top oven and induction skillet are provided in the well equipped wet bar area. A propane gas-fired five burner BBQ/grill is available on the north lanai just outside the kitchen/living area. Hale Pama Rental Terms: Payment in Full in advance. Directions and street address will be provided with confirmation of rental. Full refund if cancellation occurs 30 days before scheduled arrival. 50% refund at 16-29 days before arrival. No refund if cancelled within 15 days of arrival. Two day minimum rental with three days suggested in order to experience all the windward side of the Big Island offers. Stay six days and receive an additional day free. An additional $10.00 per night for a third guest. Cleaning Fee: We have a minimal $30.00 charge for cleaning essentials, laundry, etc. To assist us in maintaining a low fee, we ask that you use the recycle and garbage receptacles we provide. Check in 3:00-10:00pm, on day of arrival, early check in may be available. Check out 11:00 am on day of departure, late checkout may be possible.
Convenient to Pahoa, farmer's markets, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hilo, coffee farms, museums, parks, beaches, whale watching (in season), five minutes from ocean shore walks, historic sites and museums, historic lava flows, botanical gardens, Mauna Kea observatories.
  • Hale Pama - a guest cottage and the garden is a true paradise where your privacy is valued. Charles and Kathy were incredibly hospitable and nice and provided us with many local tips. Location is perfect with easy drive to anywhere while staying on the east side but staying away from the crowds. Mahalo Charles & Kathy for everything:)

  • Nice bed for us; soft and King size! Good sleep!!Private area in secure home area away from the street! Just the right size for the cost paid! Great hosts and quiet nights if windows closed! Would come to this one again!

  • Exactly what we expected and were looking for. Easy check in and hosts provided great tips for travel, places to see, and restaurants. Great location for accessing Volcanoes National Park, close to Hilo airport and the East part of the Island.

  • Help Charles promote a wave in China. Their house is awesome and needs to be driven by car. You can find it directly on Google Map Navigation “HALE PAMA”. After that, you need to contact Charles to open the door so that the car can drive in. House can be said to have everything, even snorkeling tools, can save you a wave of money. Charles himself is also very enthusiastic. Although I am not good at English, he will try to talk to you. A very enthusiastic host.

    Tim2020-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • Charles's place will be beyond your expectation. We arrived late and lost our driving license on the way. It is so nice of Charles and his wife to let us concel our following two nights booking within an acceptable loss. Charles even gave us a life-saving ride to downtown when we were incapable of driving a car. The apartment is about twenty-five minutes driving from Hilo airport and has a gorgeous environment. Let me put it this way, you can clearly see stars by just lifting up your head...

    晓维2020-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • Nice new cottage with beautiful landscaping. It was gated and the host met us to welcome us and give us keys. Nice soaps and welcome binder. A car is a must and best to arrive when it’s still light as the road is very dark.

  • This place was just beautiful, serene, peaceful, and truly a heaven. The setting and location makes you feel like you are secluded in the rain forest with beautiful flowers and nature all around. It rained couple of nights we were there, but we loved watching the rain outside, then waking up to the melodious bird song in the morning. We had the pleasure of meeting Connie, she is an excellent host and has provided a plethora of helpful tips and guides to their favorite spots in the area. They have stocked the house with literally every single thing you could possibly need for your stay, and there were sweet touches like a box of chocolates to greet us. We look forward to returning to this beautiful cottage where you can always relax and feel at ease making new cherished memories. The feeling of home is so strong it is hard to leave and our experience here was the highlight of my trip.

    Ashley2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • Connie’s and Andrew’s is one of the best airbnb we have stayed. It is sparkling clean and they have put a lot attention to detail. We loved the outdoors shower and the open air living room. The smell of the plants and flowers was amazing and hearing the coqui frogs at night was one of our favorite things. She also gave us an extensive list of things to do around Pahoa and she was there to meet us and make sure we had everything we needed. Big Mahalo!

  • Great place super relaxing very nice people highly recommend

    Robert2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • This is a unique and truly relaxing place to stay. We felt comfortable from the moment we arrived. The house is very open to the outside with large screened in living room and fresh air, but the comfortable bed, linens and furniture make you feel pampered. There is a well equipped and functional kitchen (loved the higher countertops) outdoor shower, lovely indoor bath with claw foot tub. Add the gorgeous bouquets of local flowers and stylish touches and you’ll feel like you’re staying with your good friends from LA. Definitely coming back!

    Libby2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • Connie’s place is peaceful and relaxing yet easily accessible to Puna and Hilo. With the large screened windows it feels like you are camping in the ʻōhiʻa forest but with all the luxuries of a cozy cabin. Connie met us and got us settled but then left us to enjoy the peace. Would definitely stay again.

    Gary2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful, private and unique. The hosts we’re great, and the outdoor shower was to die for!

    Kayla2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • Our trip and experience was an absolute dream! We couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay during our visit. Communication was quick and check-in was a breeze. The outdoor shower was not something we had ever experienced and by the end we couldn’t get enough of it. We spent our late evenings and early mornings in bed listening to the frogs and rain, slow mornings with coffee as we watched wild pig roam the grounds. Anything we needed was a quick 15 minutes away and we never wondered what was available as every single suggestion possible was left for us. Truly, such a dreamy stay and I would highly recommend to everyone. You won’t regret it.

Want to check out the current volcanic activity on the Big Island? Here’s your perfect home base for exploring! Our place is located above the rift and upwind of the “vog.” The color in the night sky is beautiful. We’re between Pahoa and Keaau on the Hilo side of the Big Island, nestled in lush greenery. Rest well on a new queen-sized Tuft & Needle mattress with snuggly sheets. Private bathroom. Private entrance. Access to shared kitchen, dining room, living room, and garden.
You're also welcome to use the DVD Player, Amazon Firestick, and any of the books and games on the shelf in the living room during your stay. Please keep in mind that we are in the tropics so you may hear rainfall or loud coqui frogs at night, and you may have an occasional gecko or insect visit your room. If that happens, I hope you consider this part of the adventure!
Pahoa is a laid back town known for its Farmer's Market, cute little shops and restaurants, and it's proximity to Big Island attractions like Lava Trees State Park, the volcanically heated pool at Ahalanui Park, and the only Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens (the only naturally occurring tropical rainforest zoo in the United States). We're also less than an hour away from Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world.
  • We had a really great stay at Sky’s home. The apartment is beautiful and she provides a folder with everything you need to know (WiFi, restaurants, activities, ...) We also used the kitchen which has everything you need to prepare a meal. She also has a cute cat ;). We highly recommend Sky‘s apartment :)

  • J P’s place is in a great location to easily go between volcanoes national park and Hilo. The space was clean, bed was very comfy, and the sound of frogs out of the windows at night was lovely.

    Lesley2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Sky is very nice, the house is clean, the decoration is very style, the courtyard is well maintained, and the sky can be seen in the courtyard at night, and there is a cat close to people, living here is very comfortable.

    Jinpeng2020-01-29T00:00:00Z
  • Had an amazing time :)

    Krish2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • Penelope's place is very clean and exactly what I expected from the photo. However, there is no curtain and the insects could be a bit noisy at night, especially in the rainy night. Like other travelers mentioned that a pair of earplug would be very helpful and I am glad that I brought one with me. The fan is not really functional so it might get a bit hot at night. But I'll say with private entrance and the private bathroom makes our stay easier and more comfortable, especially with the price offered.

    Megan2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Great value and perfect location.

    Jolene2019-12-29T00:00:00Z

We are hosting a Quiet Hawaiian Oasis, less then 15 min from Hilo, Hilo airport and 15 min from the earthy hippie town of Pahoa. Our Ohana is easy access to main road but far enough away to be in complete silence and zero light pollution. The studio is separate from main house with a kitchenette, full bathroom with tub and central air conditioning. If your looking for great beaches, waterfalls, and hikes through the rainforest and botanical gardens, look no further.
Very comfortable brand new home and Ohana in Keaau. Master gardener improving the landscape every week, and a licensed massage therapist with 21 years experience on premesis. Things to do in the area, Uncle Robert's Wednesday night festival with music dancing food and vendors selling unique Hawaiian gifts. Close to natural food stores in Keaau, Pahoa and Hilo if you are looking for vegan options.
  • Very peaceful, quiet, out of the way oasis with nice garden in a comfortable little unit. Hosts are very friendly and happy to help. 10 min drive and you have all the shops you need.

  • Our stay was great and this place is as advertised! Nice and clean, quiet and well kept! Had a brief chance to meet and chat with Alex and he was very nice and warm ;). Would stay again.

  • If you want a hotel style place that’s close to the attractions of Hilo while still being peaceful and quiet? This is the place for you! We loved our stay at Mark’s and Alex’s. The loft was clean, had a small fridge which came in very handy and a coffee machine. It was amazing to be able to drink our morning coffee outside in the yard. If you like the sound of nature, I suggest you sleep with the windows open. The calming sounds of bugs, birds and rain is perfect after a day of exploring Hawaii. Communication with our hosts was amazing. They answered quickly and clearly. If we come back to the Big Island, we will definitely stay here again!

    Clémence2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • I loved my stay at Alex and Mark's oasis. I came to visit friends who lived about 10 minutes away. The studio is very nice and had everything I needed. The gazebo outside the room gave me so much pleasure to sit in and listen to all of the amazing bird and frog sounds there. The landscape of the property is being developed and is beautiful and interesting with many varieties of plants and trees. I would love to visit again!

  • The apartment was perfect as describe, the checkin was easy and the room was clean and newly renovated. Not too far from Hilo.

    Kevin2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • This lovely ohana was clean and tastefully decorated and had a lot of privacy. The motion sensing light at the door made getting in so much easier than many places. Mark and Alex were responsive and delightful to work with. It is just as depicted or better!

    Charlotte2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • We only stayed at Mark and Alex’s Place for two nights, everything was much better than I expected. The place itself was very cozy, nicely decorated and very clean. The hosts were very thoughtful - power adapters, water, coffee were provided.

  • Sam's place was great. It was in a great location to get to the black sands beach and the Volcanoes National Park. The suite is attached to the main house so there is a small amount of noise that you can hear, but it did not keep us up at night or really affect our stay.

    Brandon2020-02-14T00:00:00Z

There are so many cute touches Sam adds in and tons of supplies that you can use such as big spray, sunscreen, DVDs, etc. And it's in a great spot close to Pahoe! Highly recommend!

  • We had a wonderful time at Shea’s place! Perfect for our family of 5, and a great value!!!! Loved all the rain at night and wonderful singing frogs. 😃

    Kayla2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very comfortable stay at Shea's home. The pictures were exactly how we found the place. There were many thoughtful additions, especially for families with children. The beds were comfortable and kitchen was well supplied. Some in our group had issues with the amount of noise from birds and frogs, but I didn't think it was that big of an issue, and it wouldn't stop me from staying here again in the future.

The Apartment's location is very convenient to highway 130 into Puna and to highway 11 which circles much of the island, so it's very convenient to Hilo, Pahoa, Kea'au, and Volcano, as well as a great home base for exploring the entire island. I love to share Big Island travel tips and trivia, my knowledge of Hawaiian plants and culture, and farm fresh eggs and produce with you!! Come..relax..and rejuvenate at the “Little Cottage In Kea'au” where a touch of zen calms your soul. Just 15 minutes away from Hilo! We all need to get away from all the demands that compounds us in today’s life. Down shift from it all and let the country melt the stress away...yes...you've just found “YOUR HOME” away from home. So relax, breathe in... breathe out... center your peace and start healing... take in ALL what this big beautiful Island can give you... and that my friend, is Aloha...
The Little Cottage In Kea'au sits on an acre over looking an open green lawn with surrounding trees such as mango, tangerine, avocado, ti leaves, azalea flowers and beautiful hapu ferns. Fresh fruits, bagels, cream cheese and fresh eggs upon arrival. A roomy memory foam Cal king bed (medium/firm mattress), kitchen and a full bath. Surrounding the acre property is a moss rock wall/fence giving you the privacy of your comfort. Guests will have their own gate to enter and park their vehicle right next to the cottage. We live on the other end of the property so if you need anything or have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Your privacy is very important to us and if assistance is needed, please don’t hesitate to ask. We want your stay as comfortable as possible. Having to work in a medical field for years and being EXTREMELY STRICT ON BEING CLEAN to avoid any cross contamination has set me for life! “ALL” bedding, furniture cover, towels, rugs and runners are stripped and replaced with a second set. All counter tops, light switches, anything with a knobs/handles, shower/tub, floor and etc are disinfected. “A peace of mind that the place will be clean upon your arrival.” We humbly ask that you remove any footwear before entering the home as it is our custom here in the islands. We’ve stayed at an Airbnb once, where certain items were not supplied making it a little frustrating! Running back and forth to the store was not what i'd plan on my vacation. So here at the Little Cottage In Kea’au we provide shampoo/conditioner, body-wash, hand wash, dish soap, laundry detergent and softener, salt/pepper, soy sauce, and seasonings ( I have also provided my own seasoning salt that is great with whatever you’re going to be cooking), coffee/cream, tea, trivia/sugar and Kangen water, bath tissues, extra sheets, and so much more. Things you don't have to worry about, the basics will be there. Just show up and relax! “Now, that to me is a home away from home.”
The Little Cottage In Kea'au is located in Hawaiian Paradise Park which is 1 acre agriculture lots on the east country side. Across the street is an anthurium farm. The neighborhood is very quiet and the houses are well spaced out. Side neighbor does have chickens and they do crow in the morning. Remember, this is the country side...
  • This cottage is ideal for privacy and location to the Volcano National park, the botanical gardens, the 4 mile scenic drive North to see the lush Waipio valley, driving up the tallest mountain in the world, Mauna Kea (we went twice-bring your coat!!), watching the waves crash at Laupahoehoe beach park, Imiloa Astronomy Center, Rainbow Falls, Thurston Lava tube, new and old lava flow. We missed out on the Tsunami Museum--next time! The cottage is so nice I wish we could have spent MORE time in it. Lynn has provided so many things to enhance your vacation--too many to list! Probably the best hostess ever!

  • I really can't speak highly enough about how awesome Lynn and Clay's cottage is. They do amazing job of making it feel like a home away from home. The place is stocked with just about anything you could ask for. They did a great job of communicating and were amazing hosts. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend their place.

  • The cleanest Air Bnb that we have stayed at this far!! Very classy and modern. Gracie the pig was the highlight!! Just kneel down, she’ll walk up to you, and then once you start scratching her, she will lay down and roll over like a dog. Absolutely adorable!!

    Daniel2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Great home base for Hilo and the surrounding area. Super comfy bed, incredibly clean, and amenities out the wazoo! Would definitely stay here again.

    Jeffrey2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • It was a very clean and spacious garden so it was great to drink at night! It was a little far from downtown so it was relaxing and the scenery was nice :)

    jungin2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to rest and relax, with great amenities and a functional kitchen! We would definitely recommend Lynn and Clay's place for anyone heading to either the volcano or Hilo area!

    Sarah2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Lynn and Clay’s place was a great space convenient to both Hilo and the national park. We loved hanging out with their animals - Gracie the pig especially!

    Nick2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • It was super nice and clean! You could prepare everything yourself, from breakfast to dinner! You have beach equipment and plenty of towels. The bed was comfortable. We would always come back, thank you for everything! Mahalo

Light and airy with a view of the ocean. Definitelyo the best room in the house. No sharing walls! Lots of space adds to this private room. The room occupies the whole upstairs. This allows the guests to feel like they are the only ones there. The rest of the home is open with lots of amenities including a ping pong table, cable tv, Netflix, stereo, private bath, microwave, large lanai all on an acre of land. Come join us! We on loi look
Beautiful far off ocean views through the front windows. Very bright with large windows on all walls but one. Feels like your on top of everything.
    Very nice safe neighborhood.
  • Great place between the Volcano National Park and Hilo. Comfy beds with a nice cross breeze in the room. The place has all the basic amenities which was perfect for a short stay.

  • Great value, convenient location, very well maintained and clean.

    Jenny2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Daryl is very kind, warm and welcoming. He offers tours around the island and has amazing energy!

    Cheyenne2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • The room was spacious and comfortable, a huge private room with private bathroom with open windows and a great view. The location is right in the middle of Hilo and the Volcanoes so it was about 20mins drive from each with restaurants and markets not too far off. The room was excellent! 2 king sized beds complete with a fridge, microwave, television with streaming, and plates/utensils available as well. I highly recommend this spot for those of you who need a restful night sleep and it’s perfect for any amount of time that you plan to stay.

    Don2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • One of the better Airbnbs I've stayed at over the years! Daryl, his wife Julie and their family were very helpful and accommodating. The space is incredibly spacious, clean and an amazing value. Would highly recommend and return in the future.

Lower level Ohana unit in our house, with private entrance, full bath with bathtub, outdoor patio. Spacious one acre property surrounded by greenery with fruit trees, garden and three friendly dogs.
On the Big Island, ideally located midway between Hilo and Pahoa. 2 1/2 miles from the ocean (lava meets ocean, not sandy beach). Fall asleep to the coqui frogs, awaken to birdsong (and to a few nearby roosters). Multiple fruit trees on the property- help yourself to whatever is ripe!
We are in a sparsely populated quiet residential neighborhood, on a dead-end gravel road so no traffic.
  • Julie’s place was pretty central for jaunts to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hilo, and Isaac Hale Beach Park. Her studio was very clean and had everything we needed for a pleasant few days: beach towels, board games for rainy days, big tv, reliable wi-fi, and a well stocked kitchenette. She had a nice friendly dog too!

    Lisa2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Modern, clean, and cozy - this place was exactly what we wanted after a long day of exploring.

    Steven2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • Wow! Julie’s place was a perfecting landing pad for my yoga training. Everything I needed to feel rested and refreshed, comfy bed, organic coffee, well appointed bath. Quiet, safe and clean- Mahalo for the fantastic hospitality 🌈🤙😊

  • Perfect place to stay in Hilo while experiencing the east side of Big Island! Checking in and out was easy, the apartment had everything we needed and we truly enjoyed the company of Mufasa. Thank you for hosting us, Julie!

    Katrine2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Julies place was very clean, pretty and everything was easy to go to via google maps. Mafasa is a sweet dog and an amazing greater.

    Samantha2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • Julie’s place was amazing. Julie was very helpful with providing information on things to do locally. She offered us ripe tangerines and Hawaiian hot peppers that she grew herself. Her dogs are super cute and friendly too. Would definitely recommend staying here 😊

    Stephanie2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Was a great place out in the suburbs of Hilo. Enjoyed the stars at night and the amazing room, with the sounds of nature. Great place to stay!

    Jacob2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • This location is about 20 mins from town. It’s a great location to see the Volcanoes National Park. If you’re moving around the Big Island this place is great for two day’s and then continue on to stay in Kona and Waimea. Julie has everything you will need from microwave, kettle, bug spray, organic and natural soaps, washer and dryer and so much more.

  • John was an excellent host who was easy to get a hold of, very flexible with our changing schedule, and super welcoming. His dog is also the cutest! John’s place was beautiful and super cute. He had thoughtful pieces, like earplugs for the casing of the chickens, and an espresso machine with instructions. Would definitely stay here again.

    Monica2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Outstanding!

    Daniela2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • John's place is truly as he calls it, the Hawaiian Paradise Cottage set in a neighborhood in Kea'au, which has all the charm one would expect from a home in Hawai'i...charming furniture, a nice, open kitchen, small library with a plethora of books and board games to peruse, big windows to let in all the glorious light (and cool breezes and of COURSE gorgeous views of the lovely garden out back!), and of course, a lanai with plenty of seating and quaint little lights to enjoy some outdoor time just relaxing! When we checked in we were a little early to the place and John had to meet us, and when he arrived we met his dog Paco, and he showed us in and around. He bought a combination lock just so we wouldn't have to deal with a key, which was very thoughtful and we felt special to be the first to enjoy this amenity. John's hospitality is really what made us fall in love with this stay- yes, the home is gorgeous and cozy, the beds are comfy the tv with amazon stick is nice, there's an espresso machine and coffee maker and a full kitchen and beach gear ready for use but the difference in John as a host is what we needed in our vacation- someone who welcomed us warmly, treated us with such kindness and who invited us for a glass of wine and to join in on live flamenco next door at his place (we didn't end up swinging by bc I started feeling back pain, but he even kept checking in with us that we weren't bothered by the sound). He left us the freshest eggs I've ever had in the fridge (courtesy of his neighbor), and when I remarked that there was no cooking oil around and if he had some he had it waiting for us when we got back that day! And when I couldn't figure out how to work the dryer that was on our front porch he came over just to show me how to work the thing. He welcomed us in and would wave at us goodbye when we left each day, and it was a delight to see Paco the dog running around and greeting us at the door. I think this stay was wonderful because John had us feeling truly at home and shared with us the spirit of "aloha." Even when we checked out I wasn't going to bother John because I saw he had company come to his house (which is right next door attached only by the back lanai which has separations for privacy), I was literally about to text him and looked up surprised to see he was waiting to shake our hands and see us off as we left his place on our final day. I am very grateful to have stayed here, my boyfriend and I agreed we really enjoyed John's place, it was the perfect spacious home for us to come to, and actually relax in, on the Big Island. We wholly enjoyed the company and hospitality John gave, and we will DEFINITELY be back again next time around!!! Mahalo plenty, John! You've given us a great experience and an unforgettable 1st year anniversary!

    Justine2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at this rental for one night, and John went above and beyond to make sure we felt welcome and comfortable. This is a great value for a clean and beautiful place. I would definitely stay here again.

  • Great host! Quiet, peaceful and idilic setting yet only 15/20 minutes from Pahoa and/or Hilo. Plan to visit again. John, the host, is like a personal concierge. Simply stated-a great place to stay with an amazing host.

    Ed2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Wow! First of all, Johns place is absolutely spectacular. It was beyond our expectations. The house is spacious has everything you need and more- including delicious coffee and a variety of teas. John is also one of the most incredible hosts we’ve had in our entire experience with Airbnb. He went absolutely above and beyond to make sure our stay was fantastic - he even made us breakfast and drew us a map by hand to show us all the local spots he admires. If you stay here prepare to be pampered and enjoy some oranges from the tree just outside the house. Beautiful stay! Thanks john!! Oh. Shoutout to Paco his extremely friendly puppy

New duplex: 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, fully equipped kitchenette (microwave and toaster oven, and a wet bar sink), sleeps 4. Though too small for 4 adults. No living room/dining room. Has table and chairs in main room. Centrally located for east Big Island sites, 5 minutes from the ocean. Fresh fruit trees on property, brand new custom home. Cable TV, wi-fi internet. It is rural so kokie frogs, rooster and dog barks are a factor. STVR# 19-360-485 NUC# 19-1256
Almost all new. I also built the whole house, furniture and cabinets.
Yard is landscaped. Many coconut palms and papaya trees, and many flowers. I do an odd thing in that I do have older carpets, pads, plastic around the 1 acre yard as weed control. Ocean down the paved road, but only cliffs and tide pools to enter. Not a beach access. Generally this side of the island is many shades of green.
  • 10/10 would definitely stay again. I would live there if I could. 🧑🏿‍🦽

    Christian2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • We really liked the house where we had been living almost for the whole week. John was very friendly and courteous. When we came to his house he opened “the Big Island Map” right away to show us the most popular places and events that usually neighborhoods had. Therefore, it was much more easy to make a plan for the week. Also, we would like to emphasize the fact that the rooms were very clean and we had everything that we needed in the kitchen. Every morning we liked to spend time on the chairs outside, drinking tea and watching hens and roosters nearby. It made us feel closer to the nature. If we have a chance to come to the Big Island again, we will definitely stay in Jonh’s house again. Thank you a lot!

  • Huge apartment with parking. Beautiful room with panorama windows. Free WiFi and TV. My recommendation for everyone

    Artem2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • Place was as listed and the Owner is very nice. It was very clean and has a large bathroom. We wished it had a common room or living room though. It's about 20-25 minutes into the town of Hilo (where most things are) and there are many roosters which would wake us up around 6 am. But there are roosters pretty much everywhere you go so we were not mad or surprised.

  • Linda’s warmth and her characteristic home was a good break from sterile, commercialized stays at hotels/motels on our trip. We loved being able to sleep to the sounds of crickets and birds with rain in the background. Be prepared to be greeted by two adorable cats and cuckatoo that says “Hello” and Aloha”

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Linda’s. It felt like we were in the middle of a rainforest with all the nature, animals, and away from town. She made it easy to find the place, and responded to our messages quickly. I would highly recommend staying here if you come to the island, I wish we could have stayed longer.

    Ashley2020-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • Linda was a lovely host and made our check in really easy. She provided us with fresh passion fruit, abiu and avocado during our stay - so yummy. She also decorated the entire place with wonderful plants she finds around her farm. Our toddler loved all the animals around the farm (ducks, cats, dogs, parrots). It's a farm house so it's a little more rustic than what you find the city.

    Karoline2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Linda is very friendly and she let us use her laundry though it’s late. The next morning she brought us passion fruits. They are so good. Love the animals in the farm!

  • Linda is an excellent host and went beyond our expectations, always very kind, friendly and generous by sharing her delicious garden fruits and helped with whatever she could. She also was very knowledgeable about things to do around the island and where to find things. The location is great and very unique, surrounded by nature and we felt at home. Mahalo nui loa!!!

We also have solar panels and a solar water heater. Please conserve energy: Do not leave patio lights on all night and turn off lights and lamps when you're not home. Mahalo! What is the weather like? Beautiful! We get 165 inches of rain in the average year. Actually, it is not as bad as you might think. In settled trade wind weather, it tends to rain mainly at night clearing by 9-10 in the morning. Get ready for a wonderful time at the beach, farmers markets and other outdoor excursions. In unsettled weather, it can rain at anytime. It can rain very hard too! Rates of over 2-3 inches per hour are not unheard of over short periods of time. It is always a blessing! It is fun to dance in the rain but we provide umbrellas. Our temperature is somewhat cooler than Hilo because of the elevation. On a clear winter night temperature will dip into the upper 50's. Dress in layers! On a hot summer day it will reach the mid 80's. Usually it is quite comfortable.( OLCA website) We have an honor system farm stand in front of the house. You can check it out and purchase additional items to complement your home cooked meal. At night you will be serenaded by coqui frogs and other sounds of nature. In the morning, you will hear a symphony of sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens from neighboring farms. The main house where I live is connected to the ohana (guest suite). A 4 car garage and my office/gift shop separates it from your space. You will enjoy lots of privacy.
Orchidland Estates in Keaau is proud to have its own gas station, hardware store/snack shop and a restaurant. It is located in Orchidland Drive. There is a cow sanctuary in our neighborhood that sells paneer cheese and ghee. They also give tours for a small fee. We have a farmers market/swap meet/harvest sharing event every second Saturday of the month on 36th Ave. and Orchidland Drive and I am one of the vendors. Keaau Shopping Center is only a few minutes away where you can pick up groceries, pizza, or organic items from the Natural food store. There's also a tea/coffee shop, a chinese restaurant, a hardware store, Subway, post office, gas station, a bank and a drugstore. Behind the Shell gas station is a small farmers market. The vendors are under the tents selling fresh produce seven days a week. Pahoa Village (the Hippie Town) is only 14 minutes away. Great restaurants, cafes and boutiques. There are so many breath taking places to explore in the lower Puna side. Walk around Pahoa Village, do a little shopping, munch on fish and chips, or enjoy a shot of noni juice. Get your beach gear, picnic basket ready and head down to the new black sand beach at Isaac Hale beach park. Pele did an amazing job redesigning it! Let me know if you need help planning your adventure! I'm happy to help!
  • This is a great place a little outside of Hilo that would be ideal for people who love nature and don't mind a small drive to get into town! Excellent amount of space with covered parking, which helps with the Hilo rain. Merlinda is a wonderfully friendly host with great tips on things to do and places to visit. The only thing to note is that there is a Hawaiian accommodation tax that may get added to any of your bookings (this is not a fault of Merlinda's, just something we hadn't come across in our research). I would definitely recommend this place for a quiet, relaxing stay!

    Kaylene2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay with Merlin was the highlight of our trip. Our 4 year old had a great time harvesting fruits and vegetables from the garden and playing with the toys that were provided. Great place to stay for a family. Our son slept on the sofa bed that had a wall divider. Worked great. Merlin also could not be a better host. We loved our stay!

    Marjel2020-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed there a little over a week and have nothing but positive things to say. In the small kitchenette, there is everything you will need to prepare a simple meal such as: a cute electric burner, a tea kettle, toaster over, small fridge, all the utensils and simple seasonings. The bathroom is very spacious and very clean. The space feels private since it’s attached to their carport and not directly to Merlin’s house. Best part was Merlin was a message away to answer any questions and she was a gracious host. I would say this place deserved a 6 stars (instead of 5) for cleanliness!

    Soo-Jin2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Five stars all around. We booked Merlin's place after our previous Airbnb did not work out. We weren't sure what to expect with a last-minute booking, but could not have been happier! The apartment is situated down a quiet neighborhood road Kea'au, ideally located to explore Hilo in the north and Pahoa in the south (each about 15 mins each way). It was spotlessly clean and well-stocked with everything you could need: kitchen tools, spices and oils, beach gear, extra fan, closet storage, etc. We were very comfortable coming back to this Airbnb. Merlin's personality is warm, friendly, and inviting, making you feel immediately at home and comfortable from the moment you step in. She was so generous as to share some lilikoi and soursop from her garden and allowed us to pick a few greens from her garden for a small meal. We were able to do self-laundry in the garage connected to the apartment for a small fee, which was much appreciated at the end of our trip. We would gladly stay again when visiting the east coast of the Big Island. Mahalo Merlin!

  • Clean and cosy place in the Hilo countryside. Equipped with everything you need. We enjoyed our stay - especially the passion fruit from Merlin’s garden 😀

  • What a delightful little spot, tucked into a beautiful and lush environment. Felt private, but also anything needed was only a short drive away. Merlin has appointed the space with anything one could possibly need. And the fresh fruits and vegetables from her garden are superb! Merlin is a most gracious hostess, I could not have had a better experience there!

  • One of the best Airbnb places we've ever stayed at. The house is beautifully decorated and sparkling clean and the hosts are amazing. They also provided all the beach gear and even toys for our 4 y.o among many other things. Highly recommended!

  • Merlinda has had many small touches for us! Chocolate, postcard to mark our arrival and fresh fruit! Everything was perfect! The house is very clean, it has all the necessary to spend a long stay on the side of Hilo. The bed is very comfortable and the sheets of quality. We felt at home here. Many supplies are available to meet our needs. Hoping to stay at home again merlinda Mahalo Julie and Christian

  • Mahalo SO much for the great stay! The house is really thoughtful, as it has two great showers, supplies for snorkeling, dvds and stuff for the kids and beach stuff like umbrella and chair along with towels etc. We grilled one night and listened to the coqui frogs...which we LOVE by the way. The kitchen has everything you need and everything is very, very clean, which we love! The location is good as well, as Hilo is not a far drive at all, and there is plenty of shopping and places to eat nearby. Overall a wonderful experience with everything laid out very nicely for us! I recommend a stay here if you’ll be in the area!

  • This home is beautiful! Perfect for a family or small group. Valerie and Keola helped us a lot by letting us stay on such short notice and we appreciated that so much. The location of this home is wonderful and it is so peaceful and quiet, especially at night. We loved the screened in lanai and all the homey touches. Plus it is a short drive to Uncle Robert's which us always fun! Mahalo for everything, can't wait to come back!

  • The house is very clean and comfortable. Host is very friendly, easy communication and provide very quick help. This listing is very large and very suitable for five of us. The kitchen equipment is quite adequate. A questionable host can provide quick assistance. It is a highly recommended listing!

  • Awesome place!!

    Jeremiah2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • It's on the Hilo side. The living room and bathroom were also clean. If you are using Kona Airport, it takes almost 2 hours and it is far.

    Toshiya2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Valerie's place is beautiful and spacious. We loved that there was a fully equipped kitchen with snacks left for us. Valerie was a wonderful host: meeting us at the place and giving us an introduction to the house and the area, she was always quick with communications. Would definitely recommend staying here. Thank you for your hospitality.

  • The house is situated is in a convient location to explore the surroundings of Hilo, Pahoa and the Volcanoes National Park. Val and her husband gave us some great tips what to explore. Our kids loved the toys, books and the rainforest sounds in the evening. Communication was outstanding. When we had a small problem they responded immediately and solved it. We had a great time at the house and can totally recommend it!

This charming cottage style two bedroom, one bath home is one-half of the ohana (or second family home) on my private two acre property. It is located on a quiet, secluded street a short ten minute drive south of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawai'i. We always have our own fresh farm-raised eggs to share with our guests, as well as seasonal fruits and vegetables; and are also very convenient to many of the local farmer's markets for year round fresh tropical produce.
The Cottage includes a large covered wrap-around lanai, and 800 square feet of interior space: a kitchen, dining and living area, a large bathroom with tiled shower, one bedroom with a queen sized bed, and the other bedroom with a full sized bed. We are conveniently located for exploring all of East Hawaii, from Pahoa Village and Kalapana in southern Puna, to Volcano National Park, and (of course) Hilo and the Hamakua coast regions. With the Daniel Inouye highway complete, traveling to Kona is an easy two hour drive for guests arriving at the Kona Airport.
  • Darya's cottage is absolutely marvelous - 10/10 - 100% recommended for anyone travelling to the Big Island. We had such a wonderful time there & hope to return soon!!

    Ariel2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • This is an amazing cottage, clean , private, very central, but peaceful with that serenity surrounding...Fantastic accommodating host....will surely return and recommend this cottage to all......Fantastic

    Suzette2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Darya's place is so cute, cozy & comfortable! There's a large porch to sit on while it's raining and drink your coffee or at night have a glass of wine. The kitchen is large & accomodating. Darya had lots of fruit to munch on as well as a loaf of local cinnamon bread for breakfast. There were flowers on our arrival which was a sweet and thoughtful touch. I stayed here with my parents for my 40th birthday celebration and we were all very happy with it and were sad when it was time to go. Of note, I worked remotely at Darya's for 3 days and setting up my lap-top at the kitchen table worked well for me. Volcano's NP is about 40 minutes away, driving up the coast on the scenic drive was close by and Kona is about 2 hours away. Such a great spot, would say here again!

    Rebecca2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Darya’s place was as advertised and she was lovely :)

    Laura2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the cottage. It was super comfortable - a great fit for us. The bed was comfortable and the shower warm. The kitchen was very nice, well stocked, and we cooked simple dinners, food that we bought at the local daily farmers market in Hilo or at the well-stocked KTA supermarket that was fairly nearby. Even though our time in Hawaii was marked by lots of rain, we enjoyed the dramatic clouds and there was always enough sun shine each day so we could go out for a walk and drives to explore the coast and the foliage, the volcanoes, the lava flows, the one land overgrown roads, the small towns and good food. It wasn't far to Hilo, and the visit to the volcano was easy from the house. It was a good central location, not far from things but quiet and out of the way at the same time. We look forward to going back. This is not the kind of place we want to let go.

    Ken2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • Very good for us. Quiet and well equipped.

    Franck2019-04-11T00:00:00Z
  • We spent four days at Darya's place in mid-March and loved it---it's at the end of a dirt road and you feel surrounded by the country. It is SO quiet and peaceful. Yet it's only a little way off the freeway, so we were still located with easy access to Hilo and Volcano National Park. The big deck that wraps around the house is so wonderful--we ate our meals out there. The beds are comfy; the bathroom spacious. Darya's house is next-door. She dropped off eggs from her hens and local papaya, bananas and avocados and made us feel so welcome. We were there in the spring and found the temperatures to be in the 70s the whole time we were there, so the fans almost weren't even needed. Just a great place.

Our home is close to Airport & downtown Hilo (25 mintues). Home is located in Ainaloa area. Pahoa 10 mintues away. . You’ll love our place because of Quiet neighbors. lots of vegetation on grounds. clean house. place to relax . My place is good for couples and solo adventurers.
quite neighborhood. lots of foliage all around. Wet most of the time. sounds of kids and dogs sometimes. and roosters lol. AT night love the sounds of the Coqui frogs. Very peaceful at nights. If not cloudy tons of stars. the sound of the rain.
  • Very great place in Big Island. We really enjoyed the house. The garden is beautiful and the sound of the frogs was really nice to have the feeling to be in deep nature.

    Alexis2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay with a family and explore the eastern part of the Big Island. Lots of things to occupy your children even on a rainy day like computer games, Netflix, board games, etc.

  • What can I say... My family and I were just happy to have chosen Ron’s place for our stay. Kids love theirs private space up in the attic. Thank you!!!

    Felippe2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • I like Ron's home very much. Although we are away from home, as far away as Hawaii, we also feel like having a home. Although we only live for a few days, we feel very warm. In particular, Ron's kitchen and bathroom are fully equipped and towels are prepared a lot, thank you!

    Jenny2020-01-29T00:00:00Z
  • Don’t hesitate if this posting is available. It is a perfect home away from home particularly when visiting Hilo, Volcano and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We felt right at home the minute we opened the door and coming “home” after a long day was just what we needed.

    Carolyn2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • great host, everything was clean and convenient. Our expectations were even surpassed as the house was also festively decorated for Christmas. Thank you so much for giving us a feeling of warmth and shelter.

    Andrea2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • First time at an Airbnb, wasn’t too sure what to expect but this was an extremely nice change from going to the usual hotel. Small and charming little place, Ron was always very prompt and kind in responding, despite being so busy. As the area can get pretty humid, there were ample amount of fans and windows to open and use. A lot of thought and consideration was put into it as there were ample resources and amenities, like a home away from home.

    Sahara2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Ron's home is very cozy and comfortable, and the best value for money in the Hilo area. The kitchen is fully equipped and is suitable for guests who want to cook a meal with their mouth. Driving to the surrounding is also very close. Our booking date adjustment, Ron is also very negotiable, and there is no extra charge, very fair. But sleeping at night is a little bit hot, there are two ceiling fans and one sitting fan, and there is no air-conditioning. But turning all the windows into convection is actually good. If you are a temperature sensitive guest, you may not sleep very well.

I have books and maps available to be used for planning your excursions. So the Big Island is a very special place, with one of the few active volcanoes in the world. A must see is the Volcano National Park. You can see volcanic steam vent holes and walk on numerous hiking trails. Here are some pf the free things you can do: the Akatsuka Orchid farm, snorkel and look at the colorful tropical fish small and low key Panaewa zoo, stop at South Point (Ka Lae), the most southern point of US territory, green sand beach, Rainbow falls, the boiling pots, snorkel/swim with dolphins at Hookena or 2 steps, St Benedict`s Painted Church, walk the Hilo down town stores and fruit market place, visit the Captain Cook Monument at Kealakekua bay, walk down the spectacular Waipio or Polulu valleys, travel up Mauna Kea to look at the Observitories and stars through the telescopes set up at the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy, swim with the ocean turtles or see them sleep and bask at many of the more secluded beaches on the island, like Kiholo Bay and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach,. Tan and swim at many of the white sand beaches, like Magic Sands, Hapuna, Mauna Kea, Makalavena, visit many of the historic Hawaiian centers on the island and bath in the water fall at the Kolekole Beach Park. These are only but a few things you could do, to many to mention. Paying things would be, visit the Tsunami museum, Akaka Falls, Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, take a fight on the Blue Hawaiian helicopters, swim and snorkel with the manta-rays at night, Zip line across the Akaka falls or rain forest settings, ATV and horse riding excursions, variety of boat and catamaran activities being offered. Kayaking and stand up paddle boarding could also be a fun activity to do.

  • This place was fantastic. We were nervous about having a private room with shared spaces but this was perfect. Places for us to keep all our things in the fridge, cupboards ect and respectful quiet hours. Locks on our door ensured privacy and the hostage were a wealth or helpful local knowledge and tips and places to go. Our room was huge with our own wrap around porch where we could hear the rain and the sounds of the rainforest every night. Clean and quiet, this was perfect for us. Great hosts.

  • You will LOVE your stay here! Our ideal is always having the whole space to ourselves, but in this case getting to meet and interact with Lisa, Riann, and Cathy was actually a bonus. They are fascinating and kind and run their room rentals to perfection. Our suite was HUGE and so comfortable. You will walk up and down a lot of stairs, but how wonderful to not gain weight on vacation! Each room had full use of a part of the fridge and the fully stocked kitchen. Provide your own food and clean up after yourself and everything is good. It was really a fun communal living situation. The outdoor shower was so cool, but the inside bathroom is also luxurious. The property is much more beautiful than the pictures give credit for. The roads are typical Hawaii roads, but it's close enough to Hilo to consider it very convenient.

  • Mahalo Thank you Tony, beautiful house, ideal for a group or large family. Fantastic garden, great location for excursions, great facilities, everything your heart desires. Very nice rooms, everything was very clean and tasteful. We felt very comfortable and would love to come back. Very nice host.

  • Anthony's home was superb! The grounds are like your own private rainforest with lovely flowers and lush greenary so fun and relaxing to walk around outside the house and spend time on the deck. We had a family of 10 and the house was perfect for us to relax and spread out in. Everything was exceptionally clean and met our needs for all our cooking. We stayed here for a few days so that we could explore Hilo and the Volcano National Park - the location was good. Highly recommend this home! And the host Anthony was very easy to work with and helped us with an extra night stay when our itineary was changed.

  • If you stay at this property you won’t be disappointed. The road in can be tricky but once you do arrive you will find a beautiful home with everything you might need. The landscape was beautiful and very peaceful. Spices in the cabinets, kitchenware aplenty, linens, toiletries. Anthony has created a real home away from home. We arrived to bottled water and island juices in the fridge. Cookies and snacks in a basket, fresh flowers. Anthony dropped off fresh picked oranges from the property. If I could give more then a 5 star rating I would. Anthony and his home reflects the true meaning of aloha. We were sad to leave.
