Make this hawaiian home, bordering serene Makuu Homestead, surrounded by an opulent tropical garden, your special retreat. Three miles from the ocean, and a mile from the main highway, Hawaiian Jungle Hangout offers easy access to eastside highlights--20 minutes from Ahalanui Beach Park (a naturally warmed 95 degree seawater pond), 35 minutes from Volcano National Park, 20 minutes from Hilo airport, 10 minutes from Keaau town, and 10 minutes from Pahoa Village. A full kitchen, two bedrooms, plus a den which has a sleeper sofa that opens to a queen round, in a comfortable home on a lush acre of tropical fruits and native plant. Explore the garden within lava rock flows. Also on the property is asian fused tropical Hawaiian Jungle Hut. Next to the main house with a separate entrance, the hut is perfect for a couple or single guest, having it's own full bathroom, living room, inside washer and dryer, and kitchenette with a tiki bar. The hut is also wireless and cable connected. A memorable place to make your home during your vacation or business stay.
  • Beautiful beautiful place. Judging from the pics, we were excited to stay here and the place didn't disappoint. Our first three days on the island were spent on the Kona side because I raced in the Ironman Hawaii 70.3 Triathon, so it really wasn't vacation yet. After the race I stayed on the Hilo side and I was looking to finally enjoy my vacation and boy did this place make that happen. Great area and unique environment to have homes. It made the stay memorable. I remember waking up to the soothing sounds of rain forest animals and insects. You really feel like you are on an adventure. The place was perfectly located between town and the volcanos. Hilo is a cool city in that you really experience the local way of life. Things we will remember is Koji's loco moco, Two Lady's Kitchen mochi, Big Island candies, Ken's Pancake house, Verna's take out, Richardson's black sand beach, Akaka falls and Rainbow falls. I highly recommend this place.

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Hawaiian Jungle Hangout. Liz gave us so many great suggestions of things to do/see in the area. The place is very spacious and clean. It's in a good location, only a short drive to most places around the HIlo and Pahoa area. The frogs can be a bit noisy at night but we both got used to it after the first night. I would definitely stay again if I ever make it back. Thanks Liz!

  • We loved the Hawaiian Jungle Hangout! It was off the beaten path but close to every adventure! Liz is a great host, well prepared, gave us lots of local plug-ins, markets, unadvertised area opportunities - and was easy to communicate with during our stay! We will return! Mahalo and Aloha- Kelli & Bruce Johnson

  • My family and I stayed at the Jungle Hangout for 3 days and it was such a relaxing place, and Liz was an amazing host. She provided us lots of tourist tips and recommended restaurants and events during our stay. The house itself is also very cozy. I would highly recommend it to friends..

  • Wonderful experience of truly staying in a rainforest. Stock up on supplies and park yourself in this secluded paradise spot. NB you may want to rent a 4WD on the Big Island to get the best out of the sights. Liz gave us a whole load of tips, and the place was very nicely stocked with lots of useful and friendly touches.

    Lj2011-05-09T00:00:00Z
  • Liz was a very attentive and helpful hostess. The house hadn't been cleaned well, and there is a constant mold smell in the basement den. It is a great location from which to visit all the volcano activity and sights in the Puna area.

    Trish2017-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • I spent ages choosing the place we would spend 3 night in near Hilo. Being out of the centre wasn't as issue for us with the rental car as we spent full days out exploring and chilled at the house early evening. Heaps of space for a larger party. Liz super easy to deal with - for us via email and phone. The location was quite away out but that is not a negative. It was a beautiful place, and we felt really at home there. Loved it, enjoyed the wine and chocolates also! Thanks Liz.

    Suzanne2018-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing host in Liz, she was so helpful, accommodating and easy to get a hold of. The Hawaiian Jungle Hangout was such an amazing place, just as advertised. Everything we needed was just right there. Had my two little ones with me (both under 4) and they loved it too. Great escape from the rest of the world buried in the Jungle! Can't hear anything but the frogs and roosters out here. Some nice things to use like snorkeling gear and body boards. Close to Hilo town, which makes access around the part of the island easy. Would recommend this to everyone (already have) and hope to make it out here again soon! Such an amazing value too!

  • Three days wasn't enough! We definitely wanted to stay longer in this tropical paradise. Thank you so much for the lovely stay.

  • What a fabulous place! We enjoyed chatting with Steve and Liz - what nice folks! We felt very comfortable. We went to the nearby market on Sunday for local produce, bread, real eggs, and more to eat throughout the week. The coquí frogs serenaded us from dusk 'til dawn, and the gold dust day geckos kept us company. The jungle is all around and beautiful. The wi-fi worked well, though the cell reception was spotty (which is the case practically everywhere in this part of the island). We visit from another island a few times per year, and we hope to stay at the Lizard House again.

    Tara2016-06-16T00:00:00Z
  • Had an amazing time in the lizard house! Liz and Steve were incredibly warm genuine and welcoming, greatly appreciated all the advice and extras they provided us with (snorkel gear, boogie boards, advice of where to go and yummy places to eat)... loved feeling like we were staying at a treehouse with modern amenities. The kitchen was so fun to cook in and have morning coffee, very relaxing to listen to the rainforest :D.

    Tanner2016-04-14T00:00:00Z
  • This is just a super place situated in amongst gorgeous plants and flowers. Well equipped, very clean and comfortable. I loved that they provided beach towels, mats and snorkling gear. Nicely located to explore Puna and Hilo areas, easy drive to Volcano. The hosts are so gracious and helpful. If I could have managed it I would have asked for a monthly rate and just stayed!

    Cindy2012-10-30T00:00:00Z
  • The lizard house was perfect for us! It had all the amenities we needed and Elizabeth and her husband were very helpful. They were very friendly, offered great suggestions, and were very attentive to our needs. The property is beautiful and feels very much like the rain forest. We loved sleeping with the windows open and enjoying all the island sounds and the breeze! Only a short drive from Hilo, Volcano National Park, black sand beaches....perfect location! Our only regret is that we didn't get to stay longer. Thanks again for having us!

    Rebecca2013-05-15T00:00:00Z
  • We really appreciated how friendly our hosts were, that we traded walnuts for fresh eggs, and that the location was good for the places we wanted to go in that district.

    Rebecca2014-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • Very spacious place, with full kitchen, great surroundings - we really felt that we were in the rainforest there. Bring earplugs if you're sensitive to noise: the frogs can be loud at night. Steve was a great host! Nice place to stay in if you want to explore the area!

    Benoit2011-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at this tropical location - a nice place for a retreat from busy lives! Liz, Steve, and Zack (and Tucker, the dog) were all helpful and welcoming. Zack greeted us when we arrived and showed us to where we were staying, and Steve stopped by later on to say hello and give us a more complete overview of the area and the house. We spent most of our time out and about between Hilo, the Hamakua Coast, other areas of the Puna District like Pahoa and the really awesome tide pools for snorkeling. We had a bit of a hiccup with the hot water the last day (in the middle of my shower!) but Steve quickly resolved it within just a few minutes' time. The property is beautiful and the accommodations are comfortable but not luxurious - as expected. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others, especially if you want to check out Volcano, Hilo, Hamakua Coast, and even South Island. Great value!

Everyone loves the Avocado Tree House including the little reflection room up in the old avo tree, your own kitchen with organic breakfast fixins and a covered deck facing the sunrise. Located on the same 11 acres as the Mango House and Elvira's Ohana House. No cleaning fee, however we do collect the 14% room tax for the state of Hawaii some time during your stay. summary; 100 per night or 600 per week. 14% room tax is not included in the base rent. We collect the tax during your stay.
This cute abode is under and IN an old avocado tree! The main structure offers a hand made four post queen bed and a single bed loft. The Avocado House is perfect for a couple however the loft provides space for a child or friend (however not recommended for a toddler). The little front porch with its wooden shake roof is just right for kickin' back after a day at the coast or a hike across the crater. The upstairs is a magical little cubicle called the “Reflection Room” and is perched up in the tree. It sparkles with jewels, mirrors and stained glass. What a great place to read, meditate, star gaze and watch our magical sunrise! The Avocado Tree house features an ocean view complete with a full multilevel bath. It has an abundance of solar power, wireless internet, hand painted floors and features a cool collection of funky art. The little kitchen is a separate structure just a few steps away. The kitchen boasts a monkey pod table shaped like the Big Island as well as a covered deck for outdoor dining. The kitchen comes stocked with all condiments and organic breakfast fixins (eggs, whole grain bread, fresh fruit, local honey, coffee and tea) so you can prepare your own breakfast at your convenience. Everyone who stays in the Avocado Tree House loves it! Hot news! the lava has stopped. while we were shut down we gave the avo tree house a make over...lookin good! Please search for Your Hawaiian Retreat, Pahoa, Hawaii to find more pictures and information about The Avocado Tree House, Elvira's Ohana House and the Mango House.
Friends, the lava has stopped but it has been tough on our neck of the woods. The tide pools and warm ponds our kids grew up in...are gone! Kehena Black Sand Beach and Kalapana with Uncle Roberts Awa Club (great Hawaiian music) is still with us. Pahoa town is still alive and well but needs your business after a trying past few months.
  • Our three days at Avocado Tree-House were nice and relaxing. Elvira was there to greet us and show us around the property. The house was as described. Everything was very clean, and as an added benefit, we had a fridge stocked with breakfast food and a bowl of fresh fruit on the kitchen table. We were driving and exploring the island during the 3 days we stayed there, so regrettably, we weren't able to take advantage of the hospitality that other guests had experienced. We really liked the remoteness of the house, the tree-house feel, being out in the countryside, and the view of the ocean. There were only a few minor things to note. The sound of the frogs at night and the guinea hens in the morning was a little loud at first, but we got used to it pretty quickly. Also, we never were able to get the internet to work, but by the same token, we weren't around the house during daylight hours, so we weren't able to ask Elvira about it either. Based off of previous reviews, I'm sure that things would have been resolved quickly had we been there to ask about it. Overall, the Avocado Tree-House was a nice place to stay, and a fairly unique way to experience life on the southeast side of the big island.

  • Elvira and Hugh were wonderful and gracious hosts. We enjoyed meeting and talking with them about their lives and their knowledge of Hawaii. The local fruit they provided was amazing and they were so accommodating to our every need. The cottage was like nothing we have ever experienced. It was perfect for our sensibilities. We are not drawn to big tourist destinations or fancy touches. We appreciate the basics..and we got everything we could have wanted in their very well built guest home. We are so glad we took the plunge to stay with them.

  • We loved our time at the Avocado Tree House! Hugh and Elvira could not have been better hosts! We also enjoyed meeting Hereford and Dirt. The fruits were outstanding. The rooms were the best! We will definitely recommend it to others. It was nice that we were staying with a former North Carolinian. This stay was the highlight of our entire trip.

  • We stayed with Elvira and Hugh for two nights of our honeymoon on the big island and my only regret is that we didn't stay longer! The accommodations are incredibly cozy, beautifully handmade Hawaiian style treehouses right on the edge of the jungle. I'm not sure I could imagine a more tranquil, unique, or authentic setting. Of course in the jungle one needs to be mindful of mosquitos and other insects, but Elvira let us know about this and we were able to stay with no issues whatsoever. Not only is the place and location gorgeous, but Hugh and Elvira are fantastic hosts. From the moment we arrived they made us feel incredible welcome. These guys taught us the meaning of Aloha! The fresh fruit basket, straight from their garden, is worth the price alone. We got to try a full arrangement of some of the most delicious, mouth-watering island fruits we've ever had. Not only, but one night after a long day of snorkeling they surprised us with a mouth watering dinner of roast wild pig that Hugh had caught himself! They also gave us great tips and a map for exploring the nearby Pahoa sites and coast, which is pristine and beautiful. We love this place and hope to stay again!!

  • Hugh and Elvira are amazing hosts! This was our first air bnb experience (stayed our first 2 nights on our trip) and we felt totally comfortable, loved the puna area of big island and had a great time. The avocado house was private, super clean and fun! Thank you for the eggs, bagels, fruit and coffee during our stay and being great friends for the rest of our trip. Hope to see you someday in our neck of hawaii or when we make it back to big island! Aloha from Maui-Katie and Thor

    Katie2013-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • The avocado tree house brilliant place to stay for many reasons. Hugh and Elvira are super chilled out and lovely - they exude mahalo and are happy to help or leave you to your own devices. Pahoa is a great place to visit and the avocado tree house is a unique place to stay (close to the tide pools and about a 40min drive to the volcano park). I would recommend having a car and would gladly stay there again!! It was really fun to be a child again and stay in the tree house. It was very thoughtfully built and arranged. Thank you Hugh and Elvira for sharing the treehouse. Mahalo! :)

    Vivian2015-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed staying at this cute little tree house. It made part of our trip to the Big Island so fun and different. It was just so fun!!! We really enjoyed our hosts and the beautiful grounds that the Tree House sits in. This area of the Island is so lush and beautiful!!!! They recommended that we go to a place called Uncle Roberts one night and so glad they did as it was such an awesome experience! The Coast that we visited on this side was also so beautiful and the roads you drive through are so amazing as you are driving through a rain Forrest.

    Kathi2018-04-21T00:00:00Z
  • The whole experience was very nice. The treehouse has enough privacy for us and we were both quite excited about the beautiful yard, the delicious fruits Elvira prepared us, all the interesting decorations in and around the place. It was one of the best Airbnb experience for me and my boyfriend. We met Elvira and Sandy and both of them were very kind and helpful for giving us tips, assistance and suggestions for our experience on big island. We will never forget about the avocado tree house and hope we will be back soon.

  • We recently stayed at Connie and Andrew's rainforest cottage for a week on our honeymoon in Hawaii. The pictures do not lie! The house is beautiful and you get to feel outdoors even when you are inside due to the open windows all over. The forest gives great privacy. The outdoor shower is amazing! The hosts are so nice. They can help with tips of places to go, what to see, where to eat and they can provide several great amenities. For example they organized for us to have a private holistic chef make us an outstanding 3-course meal at the house one night. On another night they coordinated for a masseuse to come give us a couples massage at the house. Connie and Andrew are just wonderful. One night we accidently locked ourselves out of the house and they were great about us just rolling up on them in their house to try and get new keys! The town of Pahoa is also cute and charming. There are so many great sites nearby, including the volcano, black sand beaches, lava heated tidepools, and more. We had an absolutely wonderful stay and cant wait to come back!

    Alana2012-07-08T00:00:00Z
  • We LOVED staying at Connie and Andrew's place. It was amazing - so private and so beautiful and clean. The location is a little out of the way but was perfect for us. They were very attentive to our needs. We will definetly return and recommend it to all our friends going to the Big Island.

    Genesa2014-05-04T00:00:00Z
  • This was our first time in Hawaii to celebrate my birthday and we couldn't have been happier with our choice of lodging. Connie and Andrew were really helpful and friendly, and the cabin was exactly as advertised: clean, private and relaxing. We were greeted by Connie who gave us a tour of the place and made sure we knew everything we needed. After she left, we noticed 2 leis on the dinner table: it was a welcome gift! She also insisted that they were available 24h if we needed anything (we didn't need to call them, but it was reassuring to know this). We were left to our own devices after that and only saw Connie and Andrew when we went snorkeling. All in all, we absolutely loved staying there - the outdoor shower is definitely the best feature! We would be back in a heartbeat! Thank you Connie and Andrew for the lovely stay.

    Nang2014-05-22T00:00:00Z
  • The hideaway was a gem. Beautiful garden, wonderful home, completely aloha. thank you for the stay.

    Holen2014-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cabin in a serene location. The large screened windows made it feel very much a part of the surrounding rainforest. Nice decor, very clean.

    Aravind2017-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • I had a lovely and peaceful stay at the rainforest cottage. The house itself is spotlessly clean and well-provisioned, with beautiful arrangements of cut flowers in each room. I loved the soaking tub and outdoor shower and slept very well in the cozy and calming bedroom. I spent hours just sitting in the living room reading and listening to the frogs chirp in the jungle. The location is great for daytime excursions: only 20 minutes or so to Hilo and its beaches, half and hour to Volcanoes Park and the Puna coast to the south. Connie was warm helpful. She came to meet at the cottage even though I arrived at night, gave me a tour, and made sure I knew how to contact her, which made me feel safe and welcomed. I hope to come back again!

    Sarah2017-05-02T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing. Truly wish we could of given Connie and Andrew's beautiful jungle getaway 6/5 it was that good. We were expecting a lot and it blew our expectations out of the water. The property itself is so gorgeous that we had a hard time leaving it to explore the island. The house was cute and immaculate and stocked with anything you could ever need and more. Loved having warm showers outside. Unfortunately didn't get to meet Connie but Andrew was lovely and very accommodating. We just can't recommend this place enough, go and stay here...now !

    Morgan2017-06-18T00:00:00Z
  • Connie and Andrew's place is real hidden gem in the middle of rainforest but very conveniently located. Volcano National Park, black beaches, Hilo, shops and restaurants are just short drive away.

Located in the beautiful Puna rainforest on three acres. A 400 sq. ft. private studio. A lovely rental for a vacation or retreat. Walking paths under a mango forest, beautiful grounds to enjoy. Near the Hilo airport, ocean, and Volcano National Park.
The lovely location is magnificent, simply lush and green. The studio is set up like your living outdoors, but also sheltered from the elements. We are in a tropical setting so we do have tree frogs that sing all night, I do have ear plugs in the unit, most visitors don't even use them, they seem to love the frogs.
Namaste Estates is 3 acres of mango forest and lawns, fenced in and private. You can see no neighbors, the setting is breath taking.
  • Thank you tom for a wonderful stay. Your property is beautiful and peaceful and you have clearly put a lot of love into it, it really shows. We slept so peacefully! The house is so unique and the stars are beautiful at night. We will definitely be back on future big island visits. mahalo and namaste.

    Zoe2015-03-25T00:00:00Z
  • We had a peaceful time at Namaste Estate. Tom is a wonderful host, very accessible, joyful and sincere. A true gem! The property is spacious, luminous, and emanates a great energy. We had an amazing stay. We really loved this part of Big Island and we will surely come back, for the place and for Tom!

    Mat_Mtl2016-07-19T00:00:00Z
  • I really have no words to describe my experience here, so I'll just go with 'Namaste'. Tom was a great host and kept a clear open line of communication. The pictures didn’t do the space justice. It was a great spacious studio and had a cozy outdoor, but covered/screened experience. All the nature sounds - including the coqui frogs - added to the ambiance of the area. Truly can’t have an issue with being outside here, as the showers and toilet are also outside, but private. And I LOVED it! Getting off the grid for a little bit was nice. Staying here was much needed and beneficial with a personal surprise that honestly changed part of my life! ;-)

    Ann2018-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • Tom was a wonderful host - there at arrival to open the gate and show me around. He had great suggestions on where to go and what to do. I had plenty of privacy but he'd pop out to say hey and check in when I was on my way out. I feel so fortunate to have been able to share in this gorgeous slice of nature. I had all amenities I could want, the place is well appointed and lovingly decorated. I enjoyed seeing the tortoises, cats, dog and birds on property, and loved wandering the trails and statuary, and all the flowers! Tom is a truly interesting host - I loved every minute of this stay. Can't say enough wonderful things!

    Nicole2016-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice accomodation in the middle of the garden in connection with the varied sounds of frogs and birds! Tom is very welcoming!

    Sabine2017-07-01T00:00:00Z
  • Spectacular grounds and unique comfortable cottage. Wonderful experience like sleeping in a rainforest except with all the luxuries of home. Tom was friendly and informative and was available for any needs or questions. We wish our stay could have been longer and hope to return!

    Gina2018-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • It was such a pleasure staying at the Namaste Estates. The property is amazing, lots of space to relax and enjoy nature. The place is very peaceful and a perfect location to refill your batteries. Located close to the volcano it makes a great spot to discover the island. Tom is an awesome host who really loves giving useful tipps and advise about what to do in the area. The flat is amazing - it's really one of a kind and furnished with lots of love. It is fully equipped and leaves nothing to desire. We enjoyed every second at this place and would highly recommend staying here if you're in the area! We'd love to come back one day...

    Sabrina2016-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • Upon arrival there were smiling faces happy animals and lush greenery. The space itself was warm and inviting. A masterfully built temple ORANGE of light. Tom was a great host who was always warmly receptive to needs. All questions revived a speedy response. On a more direct personal note, the love and joy you feel for life is evident in all you have created. Great job. :-)

This one bedroom yurt is a clean, cozy, and peaceful space surrounded by lush trees and flowers. Just a short 20 minute drive from Hilo airport, it is the perfect getaway from bustling town, nestled within a short drive to scenic volcano, great beaches, and lively Pahoa town.
This lovely yurt sits on the back of a one acre peaceful property. You are surrounded by tropical plants and trees, flowers, and birds, at night you can stargaze right from the comfort of the yurt thru the dome roof. The owner lives in a house at the very front of the property and is available to greet you and provide the keys, and to help if you have any questions or need anything. There are lots of windows to relax and enjoy the beautiful view outside, and a porch with propane BBQ grill. Inside amenities include cooler, toaster and coffee maker. There is very fast wi-fi internet, bring your iPad or laptop watch to watch tv! There are many papaya trees right outside, you are welcome to pick your fresh papaya for breakfast. Please be aware there are Coqui frogs on this side of the island, they sound like birds chirping at night. This is a tropical rainforest environment, so if you are a light sleeper you may want to bring earplugs. Also, there are chickens on the property and at times neighboring roosters come into the yard and crow.
Close to the Volcano, beaches, Pahoa town, and Hilo airport as well as downtown historic Hilo bay front
  • Rachel was so flexible with our super late checkin and checkout. It was also really helpful to have a list of places of interest and directions to them. Though we didn't get to do most of the things on the list, the place was a good distance to get to and from the airport, the volcanos, falls, and Mauna Kea! Despite not having a full kitchen, there were enough amenities to still eat at home when we wanted. The fresh fruit in the backyard was also a bonus, so were the chickens on your property (not for eating but for playing with)! The home was perfect for two of us and we loved the spacious bed. If we're ever back on the big island, we hope to make your home our home again Rachel :)

  • Everything went very well. Rachel was quick to respond to all our messages. The place was spacious, clean and well decorated. There were thoughtful touches all around including beach towels to a toaster to trash bags. Id def stay again!

  • Fun being in a yurt with plenty of room. Private location. Serenaded to sleep by the frogs. All was well. Mike and Marsha

  • Rachel was a great host! Very quick replies! The place was just as described. We enjoyed the frogs singing at night. Great place, great price. Would definitely stay again!

  • Rachel's yurt is exactly as described. Peaceful, quiet and clean on a nice property full of plants, birds and other wildlife. There is plenty of space in the yurt, the bed is big and comfy and the private bathroom is spacious. As described, there is no full kitchen but hot water, coffee maker and toaster were sufficient for us. We were out exploring most of the time - there's so much to do! Rachel even provided a list of her favorite activities, we only wished we had more time to do them all. Communication was excellent and Rachel was very helpful. Will definitely stay again and would recommend to anyone.

    Matt And Katelyn2017-05-12T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Rachel's yurt was awesome. Have never seen something like this before. It is a comfortable bed, coffee machine, toaster, a cooling box (not a fridge!) and a small clean bathroom in the yurt! We loved all the animal and nature noises in the night - that was amazing!!! Rachel and Kat are very nice and we recommend their place.

    Rebecca2017-04-15T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel's yurt is an exceptional place providing a lot of comfort. We even were treated with fresh papaya from her own tree! We much enjoyed being submerged into the nature environment, but the noisy frogs might be disturbing for others.

  • At first we had a trouble to find the accommodation as we arrived after dark. Therefore we phoned our host at least 7 times, but no aswear. Also sent her 10 msgs through Airbnb and asked her for direction and help. NO HELP AT ALL! After more than an hour of driving around, we found it. As somebody mentioned before, the bathroom was pretty disgusting, especially bathtub was moldy and dirty, toilette as well. There was the only one towel provided which was stinky already. We knew there was shared bathroom with another room, but did not expect to have bathroom window straight to our bedroom and listen every fart! Also to use the kitchen for an extra $ 10 was a joke! We did not expect any luxury, just clean and tidy accommodation and decent host. We have been using Airbnb very ofter last several years, but definitely this was the one of the worse experience for us. Overall we would NOT recommend this place to anyone to stay. Good luck!

    Beba2017-10-22T00:00:00Z
  • Had a nice one night stay. Very remote place, rainforest sounds around, cozy bed. Can recommend!

    Inka2017-11-18T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful house, lanai, yard, pets and overall energy! We arrived late and the room was open for us, super relaxed check-in. Kealoha was exceptionally kind, warm and welcoming. The lanai is absolutely beautiful, if you're lucky her adorable dog and cat will come hangout while you're enjoying the space. The bedroom is long and slightly narrow, but very nicely furnished (especially for the the price). If you don't have a vehicle the location is a bit of a hassle- 4 mile walk to closest store, little to no cell service to call for transportation and is an expensive cab ride from Hilo Town/airport area. If you're looking for a relatively secluded stay in beautiful Hawaiian rainforest and distance is no matter, then it is perfect. Bathroom situation is unique... the bedroom appeared to be a later addition to the home and shares a wall with the bathroom. This is only strange because the doorway from the bedroom to bathroom is only separated by a privacy divider and there is an open screened window in the top of the wall separating the two rooms- so you can hear most of what is happening in the bathroom. Since it is shared with other guests and Kealoha's clients, it is not ideal for light sleepers or those who insist on total privacy- fortunately other guests and clients were respectful and we had no issues. If you haven't lived in an exceptionally humid/moist place, be prepared for some subtle dampness on towels and top sheets and the unique smell that accompanies it- welcome to the rainforest! Also be prepared for the forest natives- very vocal Coqui frogs will sing to you all night, beware if you are a light sleeper! Forunately Kealoha graciously provides earplugs and the bed extremely comfortable, making for a great nights sleep! Overall and fantastic stay- just wished we had time to get a traditional Lomi Lomi massage during our stay.

  • The place was very clean and tidy and had all you could need and more for your stay. There was also a lot of toiletries in the bathrooms should you forget to bring some. Plenty of space for our family and our son loved the little lizards that would visit the lanai. Great spot not far out of Hilo and one we wouldn’t have visited if it wasn’t for this house. Kai was a great host and responded super quickly to all my questions.

  • Great place, with great host. A bit far for everything, but worth the journey.

  • In my personal experience, I think this deserves more than five stars. The host, Victor is the most thoughtful and accommodating host I have had yet in my experience with vacation rentals. He cares about your comfort and happiness and went out of his way to make sure I had everything I needed to have an comfortable and enjoyable stay. Victor's dog Shadow is an adorable, sweet, old and loving dog. As an animal lover, having Shadow on the property was a bonus for me. He never barked, keeping with the serenity of the neighborhood and mostly stayed inside with Victor. But having a pet on the property made it feel more like home for me. Having visited here in the past, this neighborhood is one of my favorite places to be in Hawaii. Everyone seems so friendly and kind here, it is really safe, and there is a real sense of community. The neighborhood park is just a couple minutes walk from the rental. And the quite peacefulness of this area is unmatched. An amazing host combined with an unbeatable location. I travel to Big Island fairly regularly and I hope to be able to stay at Victor's place each time I come in the future.

    Ann2018-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • Victor is a generous and tentative host. His property was immaculate and well appointed. Beautiful landscape and peaceful surroundings were so relaxing. We will definitely stay there again and would recommend this property to all our friends. And having Shadow (Victor’s beloved Akita) hanging out with us on the lanai in the evening was a big plus.

    Pam2018-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • We spent 5 nights in this apartment and we loved it. It was very clean, the kitchen had everything we needed, we slept very well and wifi is very fast. The house is surrounded by a beautiful rainforest garden. Victor is such a wonderful person. He and his lovely dog Shadow made us a home away from home. Thank you very much. We would definitely come again. This is our 11th week of traveling through the world and by far the best airbnb.

  • Victors place was a great place for exploring this side of the island. Short drive to Hilo if you’re looking for a bigger town. Victors place is very clean and well kept. He was very accommodating with our last minute change of plans. We had a great stay and would recommend victor’s place!

  • Enjoyed our stay. The place was just like described. Loved the secluded feel of the house. The frogs are definitely loud, but I enjoyed the sound and had no problem falling asleep. My friend booked a massage with Kealoha while we were there, and it was so good, she's already gone back for a second massage.

  • Comfortable, uses natural cleaning products, quick response and really sweet animals on property.

    Cedar Sky (LaDeane)2018-03-27T00:00:00Z
  • This place a tropical oasis away from home. It was difficult to find at first, but Kealoha gave specific driving instructions promptly by mobile as we did not have a map or GPS. We were very lucky to have her describe it to us or we would not have found the place! It was exactly like the pictures and super clean with kitchen and balcony. The bed was very comfortable. She was not there but her groundskeeper Pete was, who met us and was very friendly. There's a carport for your car. The lanai was comfortable for chilling on the sofa bed. She has cute animals, including Mailie her cat that purrs at the door wanting to be patted all the time. I would recommend people staying here for a great experience in Hilo. I would also recommend going to the Volcano National park which is 40min away by car!

  • This place really IS "luxury at budget price". Everything was sparkling clean and the rugs and towels were suuuper soft. The best part was definitely the water pressure from the showerhead. If that doesnt spell out luxury, I don't know what does. Also, this place also offers airconditioning. Mark even leaves a cooler and portable beach chairs for you to use! It was definitely one of the best place to stay at when on the Hilo side of the island.

    Joycelyn2018-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Mark's for 5 days in August. Surprisingly we didn't need to use the air-con during the night. We didn't get to see Mark, but his personal guidebook in the room was extremely helpful, and he generously shared his recommendations by texting during our stay. The location was convenient for our helicopter tour (Hilo airport) and lava tour (Kalapana), which were highlights of our trip. Most nights, we ate dinner at Pahoa, 10-15 minutes drive from Mark's place, which has one street lined with several great restaurants that we would not have known about if it weren't for his advice. Thank you Mark for such a memorable vacation!

    Miki2017-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • Pros: Clean, has air conditioning, bed was really comfortable. Cons: Lots of coqui frog noise, shower was high pressure enough to hurt a little, room is pretty small, A/C turns on and off every few minutes.

  • This place was way better than what we expected, and for the price, it's definitely a steal! The place is clean, bed is supersoft, shower was nice. Everything was great for what you pay. Location is 30 mins away from the lava viewing (by kalapana) and 40 mins from hawaii volcano national park, 3O mins to hilo. Shelley is a great host, she messaged us all throughout and was very accomodating with our late check in. She even gave us a list of recommendations of things to do around the area. We'd definitely stay here again.

Micro wave safe plates, cups, bowls and a variety of food prep utensils and cutting board are provided. You will find in the closet beach towels, chairs and a cooler for your use.
Our location is central to all the sights on the east side of the Big Island. Hilo is only a short drive and offers many restaurants, museums and galleries. Visit the Botanical Garden just north of Hilo off route 19. If you are a surfer or buggee boarder or like to watch surfing visit Hononlii Beach Park also off route 19 north of Hilo. See an amazing display of colorful tropical fish and turtles while snorkeling at Richardson's Beach Park or Paddle Board at Reeds Bay both in Hilo. You can rent snorkel gear and paddle boards at nearby Hilo Ocean Adventures. Pahoa is a fun nearby village to visit. It has several fine restaurants, grocery stores and a interesting little museum.
  • As a host and frequent traveler on Airbnb I can unequivocally say that this is an ideal listing with incredible value and personal touch! It was convenient enough to reach from Hilo Airport, and once you arrive...man-oh-man it's like its own little oasis: the fragrance of flowers and manicured lawn; the guest-allotted parking and welcome signs; a private Lanai with swinging seat for two; ceiling fans in case it's preferred over a/c (which is provided;) new towels, linens, bedding...even wine glasses/dish ware with mini fridge. This is a place some can live full-time: we Airbnb travelers just get the advantage of enjoying Mark's little slice of heaven in Hawaiian Paradise Park. Mark was thoughtful enough to reach out to me directly via text to inquire about my experience and stay in the rental. I almost didn't want to leave review out of greediness for finding treasure I'm tempted not to share, but this is a great place, and Mark's done a fantastic job with creating this space that it's only right others get chance to experience it too. Book this place with no hesitation if you're a single or couple (just don't book it when I want to return here!) You'll be glad you did. Thanks again Mark!

  • Mark has a great place near Hilo. it was very comfortable and he had very good tips on what to visit on the island of Hawaii. we very much enjoyed our stay!

    Bernard2018-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • It is about as straight-forward as it gets. It may have been the least I’ve interacted with a host but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, unless you’re looking for a more warm interaction. The place was clean and comfortable. The backyard area wash lush and peaceful. It was the perfect overnight stay for my half marathon in volcano.

    Kat2018-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • Great clean place for a couple to stay. Very easy to find with the directions and pictures. Quick clear communication. Would definitely stay there again

  • Nice little appartment with Lanai and a little kitchen. All clean and comforting.

    Martin2018-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • This place is indeed 5 Stars! It is really clean, has allthe bed is comfy

    Stefan2018-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Mark is a wonderful host, very attentive, accommodating and overall just a nice person. Our room had the screened in porch which was amazing. We stayed here the night before Hurricane Lane arrived so there was lots of rain that night but we hung out on the porch with no problem - was really wonderful. I'm sure Mark mentions in his posting but there is not a full kitchen here, small kitchenette which worked well for us. Bathroom and sleeping areas were impeccable and comfy.

    Ivett2018-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • Mark's place was exactly as described and impeccably clean; perfect space for 2! We can't wait to plan our next trip to the Big Island and hope to be lucky enough to be hosted by Mark again :)

    Cute and Affordable
    Quiet and safe
  • The cabin was charming and more spacious than it appears in the photographs. The location can't be beat--halfway between Hilo and the Volcano National Park. David had the place well stocked with necessities, including bug spray. We couldn't be happier with our choice to stay there.

    Amanda2015-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • The Lemon Cello was over-the -top best deal ever. A fully equipped kitchen with blender, pots and pans, etc. Very clean. Very nice back deck with picnic table. King size bed. All the comforts of home, including iron and hair dryer. A small house all to yourself! And not far from the volcano

    Livvie 2016-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • This place was great and communication with David was so easy and he was very helpful. My only complaint would be it is a little further from what we wanted to do but it was a nice escape from the city life. Overall good experience.

    Morgan2017-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • We very much enjoyed out stay at Lemon Cello. We had no problem locating it in the pouring rain at night and the place was cozy and comfy. We liked that it was so private and quiet (with the exception of the musical coqui frogs). David is a gracious host and made us feel welcome and made the check in easy. The location is a pleasant distant to Hilo and we would love to come back soon! Thank you for a great valuable experience! Jenn & Lonny

    Jenn2016-12-17T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was great! Looks even better in person than in the pictures. The wifi worked great and there are ceiling fans in each room. Very quiet and David made it super easy to get in and check out. Not too far away from some great dinner spots in Pahoa also. Only wish we could have stayed longer!

    Rustin2016-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • Second visit, just as lovely as the first! Such a wonderful and homelike environment to come back to after a day of adventuring. Didn't see David this time but he was very quick to respond to my questions about the eruption & vog (neither of which caused any issues). I did however get to see his pup, who is a little older and grayer but loves pets & scratches as much as ever!

  • Relaxed and comfortable accommodations in beautiful Hawaii. It was all we needed and David was easy to communicate with. We even could see the glow from the lava in the distance. Great value!

The room is located at the back of the house with two windows and a fan. Freshly redone with new carpet, paint, and lighting. You so share the bathroom with the room across the hall. There is a living room with a 60 inch tv that has cable. Also has a full kitchen. We are 30 minutes from Hilo, 40 minutes from airport, and less then an hour to Volcano National Park. The ocean cliffs are a 5 minute walk away, which is a great place to watch the beautiful sunrises.
This home is located deep in Hawaiian Beaches subdivision and is close to the ocean. This home is simple, clean, and safe. The room and most of the house has been recently redone. Pahoa ia lush and green due to the abundant amount of rain. There are coqui frogs at night that help sing you to sleep. The ocean cliffs are a 5 minute walk. Kitchen has anything you would need to cook your meals and a large fridge for any groceries you may have that do not fit in the mini fridge. We are 30 minutes from Hilo, and less then an hour from Volcano
I love that the ocean cliffs are just a few minutes down the road and can easily walk there. We do not have neighbors on either side of our house so it's nice and quiet. Da store is 5 minutes away for quick stop to pick up items. Pahoa village is 10 minutes away which has Longs Drugs, Malama Market, Kaleo bar and Grill and a few other shops and restaurants. Hilo is 30 minutes away. Volcano national park is less than an hour away.
  • Perfect location, great people, extremely accommodating and just over all made my stay on Big Island so much better

  • Daryl and her husband were very kind and helpful! Communication with Daryl was easy and although we were a bit later than we had indicated, they were very welcoming. Everything was very clean and the shower and the bed were both lovely. Perfect for a little getaway, especially for exploring the Big Island's volcanoes since it's very close and an easy drive. Would definitely stay here again!

This jungle oasis is the perfect place to spend your trip in paradise. It features WiFi, washer/dryer, and ocean views from the 500 sq ft deck, facing east to capture the stunning Hawaii sunrise. At night, light up the propane fire pit while you stargaze under Milky Way. This home has high ceilings, lots of light, and an amazing jungle breeze. Visit the active lava field, Uncle Robert's night market, or the secluded Kehena Black Sand Beach just down the road. This is your home away from home!
The house is a post-and-pier home, which means everything is on the second floor. This lends to a real treehouse feel, as you are always amongst the trees. This also keeps you away from the moist jungle floor and up in the breezy tree line. The house has three separate sleeping areas. The master bedroom is Japanese bedding style, with two cushioned sleeping mats on the floor. The master is connected to the first bathroom, which has a jetted bathtub. Our bathrooms are stocked with Dr. Bronner's All-in-One soap products. Lots of fresh towels can be found in the hallway closet. The master is connected to a bonus room, which has a queen-sized mattress and direct back deck access to the hot tub. The bonus room by far has the best view of the sunrise in the morning. The third sleeping space is a private bedroom on the north side of the house. This bedroom has its own full bathroom. Our bedrooms have lots of closet space and plenty of room for a large group to share. We've ditched the conventional couch and TV living room and opted for a more cozy and intimate space with lots of rugs, cushions, and floor pillows. This is the perfect space to read a book, relax and meditate, or make out. You are in the jungle and it's the perfect place to disconnect. This is the space to do just that. The house relies on Hawaii rainfall for water and the property has a large catchment tank which supplies the home. The kitchen features a 3-stage Reverse Osmosis faucet, just to be extra sure that the water is pure for drinking and cooking. You may see geckos running around the house, but don't be alarmed. They eat the bugs, so they're your friends. The kitchen has a toaster oven, microwave, and gas stove. The stove is fueled by propane and works great, but the oven takes a bit to preheat. We have stocked lots of organic Green Tea and Earth-friendly, non-toxic hand soap and cleaning supplies. The kitchen is also stocked with organic herbs and spices and features a dishwasher. If you choose to do the dishes on your own, you can enjoy the ocean view from the sink window. On the back deck is a washer and dryer, with Eco-friendly laundry detergent and the propane fire pit, which is filled with lava rocks. The home only has neighbors on one side, but they are quiet and barely visible. You'll barely notice them and when you're chilling on the back deck you won't even know they exist.
  • Beautiful location in the jungle.

  • My family and I loved this place. The lanai/outdoor balcony is the highlight—we could spend the afternoon outside even on a rainy day. The hot tub, fire and washer/dryer were fantastic amenities also. Leland and his wife are excellent communicators and will respond really quickly if you need anything. I highly recommend tossing your food scraps in a plastic bowl in the freezer instead of the garbage until you’re ready to take it outside because you are in the forest and there are a lot of geckos, ants, rodents who want to get in—but we managed to keep them away (keep doors closed also). This place is a relaxing cottage-and close to Pahoa, the lava viewing, hiloand beautiful black sand beaches and tide pools. We also loved walking the road through the Puna reserve each day. A really unique spot and great value! Mahalo!

  • This house was amazing, we stayed for a week an absolutely loved it! The deck is super comfortable at night with the fire pit, not to mention the all the stars you can see on a clear night. Very friendly neighborhood, and close to some very unique places on the east side of the island.

  • We stayed 3 nights at this jungle oasis. It is a peaceful and cozy place to spend our trip on big island. We were able to make food in the kitchen; meditate in the living room; enjoy tea and ice cream next to the propane fire pit. Leland's house are not far away from the active lava field and black sand beach. Even Leland was not in town during our stay, he was able to answer our questions in a friendly and timely manner. Thank you Leland for being a great host!

  • Had a great stay at Sean & Zorro’s place. He was really communicative, we were able to check in early and the bungalow was great. Quiet, clean, spacious, well-equipped and private. Sean was great with answering questions about things to do locally and on the island too. Would definitely stay again, thanks Sean!

  • Great place to stay worked perfect for our visit and close to the ocean. Amazing host always quick with email responses.

  • Sitting on the porch, looking out at the coconut trees and watching the birds flutter around was so relaxing. A few minute walk to the ocean and we saw several sea turtles. You can sit and watch the waves break and see the Black Sea cliffs. We drove into Pahoa for dinner and saw the volcanic glow at night. After dinner my son loved playing the Xbox that was there.

    Julie2018-07-15T00:00:00Z
  • Sean is a super nice guy and easy to join! Its housing is well located and allowed us to appreciate the proximity of the erupting volcano. We had a good time at Sean's.

    Christian2018-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Sean's place is amazing. A short walk to the water and a short drive into the awesome small town of Pahoa. Whether you're looking to relax on the lanai and listen to the nearby waves, or take a ride to Pahoa, Hilo or anywhere else on the Big Island, this is the place to do it. My girlfriend and I had an incredible trip that we won't soon forget, and a lot of it surrounds just hanging out at Sean's place. Sean was also super helpful and communicative: Hurricane Lane had just hit the island a week prior, so we were worried about our stay. Sean kept us up to date with everything and even offered a full refund after our original check in date. He's really the best! Highly recommend.

You will be close to nature and hear the birds in the day time and the frogs at night. It is located on 8 acres and adjacent to a 5000 acre forest reserve. This listing is for our 210 sq foot Glamping Tent and is larger and nicer than most bedrooms. It has a queen size bed and a full size futon with ample lighting, plus charging for cell phone. Free bikes are available to explore.
As of Mid October, we have reopened! The lava never came to our property and has now moved to another part of the island. It was exciting times for us as the hot lava was only a mile away! The highway to our property is currently out of commission as it was the main pathway for the lava flow down to the coast. Luckily, the state of Hawaii paved the alternate route which is a one lane road and travel time to us wasn't increased by much. Driving down newly paved one lane road will be one of the highlights of your vacation. The previous adventures of the hot ponds and swimming with the turtles is now replaced with trekking over fresh hardened lava to see the old town village that was here just earlier this year. Our location is out of the way for folks whom want to travel every day to multiple parts of the island. But we are absolutely perfect for someone who wants peace and quiet. This lovely glamping tent is 210 sq. feet and is equipped with lighting, a full sized quality memory foam mattress with a mattress pad made from bamboo to make it breathable. It also has 2 night stands, a full sized dresser and a futon for sitting (or for larger parties extra bed space if needed) All the comforts that a normal bedroom would have. Plus a bit more.
VERY SAFE and enjoyable to walk around. Neighbors are extremely friendly.
  • This experience had all the enjoyment of camping out without the inconveniences. Our large yurt had electricity with beautiful lighting, a queen-size bed, a chest of drawers, and a comfortable carpet. At the same time we were definitely under a tent, a really wonderful sensation. Restroom and shower were pleasant and very clean. We had access to a veranda with comfortable chairs and a modern kitchen (with refrigerator space) and living room. The well-manicured grounds are surrounded by tropical rainforest with all of the lovely night sounds and the starry skies are unbelievable.

    Galia2018-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful yurt in the middle of nature ! Absolutely comfy and peaceful. I loved my stay there. It's a bit far from the city so you'll need a car to move around easily but the place is worth it !

  • Great place for travellers to meet and hang out. All the glamping tents were clean and the property was well maintained. It's a beautiful little country neighbourhood tucked away in the jungle. The beds were very comfortable which made for a great night's sleep. We enjoyed falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle.

    Ian2018-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Great spot for the budget traveler. Excellent location in the jungle. Feels like authentic hawaii. Close to fruit stands, kapoho tide pools , warm ponds, and other east side Puna attractions. There are multiple tents available for rent, so this place feels more like a hostel type lodging, but you do get your privacy. Would definitely stay here again.

  • Erb and Shella's place was great! Very nice and clean. Tracy helped us with everything. Unfortunately we had to leave the place a little bit earlier due to the volcano. We cancelled our booking and they returned us the money for the days we didn't sleep there. Thank you!

  • If you‘re looking for a place to stay on a budget i‘d definitely recommend this place! It‘s a sweet little room which was very clean and had the most comfortable bed in it. There‘s a coffee machine, shampoo/ conditioner and even mosquito nets! Communication was very easy and fast, and we had really good WiFi! Just remember you‘re kind of in the rainforest so bring earplugs if needed cause you‘re gonna hear the crickets :)

  • We spent one week in this very comfortable room and we recommend this host. Dani and her husband were very welcoming and made sure everything was ok. There is no kitchen but they lent us a cooler to keep drinks and some food fresh, and a fan as well. The room and the bathroom was very clean and the bed very comfortable. They have a daughter so sometimes she can make some noise because she's still a baby (one year and a half ), but Sofia is so cute, very friendly and sociable with guests. We had a cute hug from her when we left. For sure it is a very good place to stay in Pahoa for a very cheap price :)

Our beautiful and peaceful home is yours to share with us. Enjoy the privacy of our bedrooms being separated from the common area by a wrap around lanai. Laze on the front lanai and overlook our water garden in our lush tropical setting. We are located 10 minutes to Pahoa town, and 5 minutes from the weekly night market with Hawaiian music, food and dancing.
The bedroom is spacious and has a comfortable queen-size bed overlooking the water garden. Your own private full bathroom is available as well as use of the beautiful outside shower. We have a fully equipped kitchen with fridge and pantry space. 2 rooms are available to rent for a family or the whole house. Please inquire.
We are 10 minutes to Pahoa with wonderful restaurants. We are very close to the area where you can hike to the lava. Its a 5 minute drive to the ocean as well as a lively night market with Hawaiian music.
  • I don't even know where to start! The pictures do no do this space justice. It is by far the most beautiful place I have ever been in, stayed at and I have traveled a lot! I usually stay at a different retreat location when I come to the Puna side of the island but I will always stay at Evy and Robinettes place now. They unfortunately left when we arrived but are incredibly friendly and would have loved to have spent more time with them. Their space is so peaceful and the place is so incredibly designed down to every last detail, it's unbelievable. We had a fire in the evening in the octagon shaped living room, kitchen with windows all around and the outdoor shower makes you feel like a god or goddess. Your own bathroom has a beautiful huge oval bathtub and I am a giant fan of the bath but the shower was magical. Your bedroom is on the opposite side of the wrap around lanai as theirs with the living space in the middle so privacy is not an issue. Staying at this house is an experience you do not want to miss if headed that side of the island. Trust me, you will not want to leave. Most relaxed and best sleep I have had in the 2 months I have been here. Mahalo and Aloha, Natasha and Matthew

  • Robinette and Evy have a gorgeous and unique place. Our room and bathroom were private and both elegant and so close to nature. All of the kitchen amenities, water pressure, dining areas are spectacular. And the two of them are very considerate - Evy made me a ginger lemon drink when I was feeling under the weather and when there was a chance that the volcano would disrupt our stay, they offered us the option to find another place and refund; and I'm very happy we didn't have to take them up on it! I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a unique and lovely stay on the Big Island.

  • If you have a car and look for a great experience in a quiet area at Big island, that's the place to stay. The house is gourgeous, very clean and Robinette is a lovely, caring and generous host. We loved chatting to her and followed her very good tipps to discover the island: Within 15 min by car you reach the point were you can go for a hike or ride a bike to the glowing lava. It's really great. Wednesday night market at the end of the road, is really a local experience you shouldn't miss. Don't hesitate, book now, you'll love it.

  • A wonderful place to stay with a lot of space and facilities. Comfortable bed and a quiet room. The place is perfectly equipped for guests with a full kitchen equipment. The outdoor communal living area was perfect for relaxing. We absolutely loved especially the place itself! You won't regret the stay! Highly recommend and I can't wait to visit Big Island again!

  • Set in a rainforest, the Dreamy Hawaiian Home was nothing short of an all-out amazing experience. For someone that is completely immersed in city life, it was refreshing to be out in nature. I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful and immaculately clean the place is. The home and its surroundings are GORGEOUS (the pictures don’t do this place justice). The home has beautiful modern amenities making it a clear choice for anyone seeking an adventure without being too far away from their comfort zone. I would be lulled to sleep each night by whistling frogs, and the mating calls of the bullfrogs in the pond next to my bedroom. It was so peaceful. Robinette (host) is so thoughtful and lovely, and made my time at her home absolutely memorable. She gave clear directions on how to get to the house, as well as other tips about enjoying places during my stay at the Big Island of Hawaii. She was so generous with her home, food, care, and time that she gave to me. She showed me stunning places around Pahoa that she personally goes to herself. I left yesterday recharged, and at peace with myself. I can’t wait to go back. Soon, I hope.

  • Spectacular oasis in a tropical setting. This is the benchmark ALL airbnb's should strive for, so very unique! The open air shower, the fresh avocados, the garden with special landscaping makes you feel as though you are in your own private arboretum. Not a speck of dirt in sight, and fresh clean linens give you a heavenly nights sleep. Our hostess is so interesting with her special worldly touches and thoughtful conversations. Close to everything the Puna area has to offer, but far from the madding crowd. Don't think twice, book it!

  • Robinette was very friendly and helpful, an amazing host. She helped us with finding places to eat in Pahoa and informed us about the nice places to visit on the island. She even gave us umbrellas because it started raining the second day we were there! The house was located at a little hidden piece of paradise on Earth. A breathtaking building, surrounded by a beautiful garden in the middle of a forest. We had two nights of memorably restful sleep thanks to the relaxing sounds of cricket frogs. The house was astonishingly clean and Robinette was kind enough to offer us access to all kitchen utilities and our private bathroom. We highly recommend it!

  • Shareef has a comfortable place tucked in the back of the neighborhood. We were a bit disappointed by some of the aspects of our stay: lack of breakfast even though it was listed as a provided amenity, location more remote than expected, somewhat slow communication with host. It's possible that this is due to a medical issue that Shareef mentioned after the fact and did apologize for, but overall our stay was just alright.

    Bridget2018-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • Clean and affordable, but nothing special. Bare bones kitchen with limited space/tools to cook/prep. Comfy bed. Quiet space

    Dean2018-06-15T00:00:00Z
  • This was a really nice, clean, and comfortable space. I like to cook most of my own meals and really appreciated the well equipped kitchenette. The unit was just as presented in the listing and was a really great value for the price!

    Carly2018-04-17T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay in Aloha Forest was great, space is much better than it looks on pics. Nice, clean, comfy and quiet. Bed is super comfortable. Highly recommend!

  • Nice clean quiet place to stay with everything you need and nothing you don’t. For the price it’s 100x better than any hotel!

    Kyle2018-04-09T00:00:00Z
  • The house is amazing. Sparkling clean. It's located in a lovely secluded place, away from all the noise. This is the place for you if you love nature and the volcano. Shareef is a wonderful host and is extremely helpful. Very quick to respond too. We loved our stay.

    Pradeep2018-06-21T00:00:00Z
  • Shareef is rightly categorized as a superhost, because he is a super host. He is friendly, very hospitable, makes sure you have everything you need, and even recommends nearby attractions. Particularly, Shareef recommended Maku'u Point (10 minutes away), where I spent much time; it's beautiful. The accommodations are neat and very orderly; comfortable bed, hot shower (or cold, if you'd like), comfortable sitting area, kitchenette, and dinette. Ceiling fans keep the space perfectly comfortable. A covered parking space right at the door is a plus. Woods and a couple of neighbor houses provide privacy, peace, and quiet perfect for a getaway from the hustle and bustle. 25 minutes to Hilo. 2 hours to Kona.

Come see lava. Located in Pahoa Village, the closest town to the active lava flow. Da Bungalow is behind our family surf shop, in the center of Pahoa, within walking distance to stores & restaurants. Da Bungalow is akin to a studio apartment, with WIFI/internet, refrigerator, microwave, washing machine, & bathroom. Da Bungalow overlooks a private garden with hapu'u ferns and anthuriums. Pahoa is a place for adventurers, seeking to explore the Puna jungle, the rugged coastline & LAVA.
Situated behind one of the town shops, Da Bungalow is steps away from other shops and restaurants in this historic village of Pahoa. Tenants can enjoy 20 percent of board and snorkel rentals. Da Bungalow also has WIFI, mini fridge, microwave, and coffee pot.
Pahoa Village is an eclectic town located around 20 miles southeast of Hilo.
  • We met Tiffany in the store and were welcomed by a captivating smile. Da Bungalow is the cutest little nest with lots of artsy and hawaiian/ surf themed decorations. I particularly loved the little reading nook in the window. We felt very cozy and comfortable. Place is very private as you are by yourself after store hours. It comes with a little fridge, microwave, and coffeemaker to store/ prepare your supplies. There is a health food store with delicious organic food as well as coffee shops, a pub, and a breakfast place within 2-5 min walking distance. Frogs and birds hold a lovely and loud concert at dusk which we enjoyed. Bring earplugs if that's not your jam. If you expect the Hilton, this is not for you. If you like a beautiful, clean, and artsy little nest I recommend Da Bungalow.

    Jeanette2016-11-12T00:00:00Z
  • Sweet little spot in a great location. Great window seat with a view of the fern garden. Would highly recommend, and the surf shop in front has cute bikinis to boot!

  • Super easy to book, great price, easy and flexible check in and out, comfortable n cozy...

    Byron2017-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Da bungalow! Great being so close to the health food store, some restaurants and a small bar with live music on weekends. Tiffany was very nice and accommodating! We definitely appreciate her. We will be going back there to stay next time in Pahoa side!

    Tamil2017-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • Great spot and close to all!

    Donna2017-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • Tiffany was an excellent host and very sweet, but there are some negative points alongside the positives of this listing. This is nice and away from the city, with a cute local coffee shop across the street. It's cool at night, which is great considering the hot days. However, there are a few things we feel we need to point out... first, something that can't be fixed but is still pertinent... the night wildlife. There are frogs that chirp very loudly outside. I found this nice, but they kept my husband awake most of the night. Second, the bed and pillows make for an extremely uncomfortable experience. There were 3 pillows... 2 very lumpy and one almost unrecognizable as a pillow. We had to go buy pillows at Walmart. The bed is extremely hard and thin, with rough springs you can feel. We are both 27 and woke up with neck and back trouble. My husband has also slept on all kinds of surfaces, and found this to be the worst night sleep he's had (and had a lot of trouble falling asleep). Third, there is a bright light that shines on the bed at night from the house next door. Fourth, there is no curtain on the sliding doors. Although these face the jungle in the back, it is something to consider if you like some more privacy. We had to leave and book a hotel for our last night because it was that rough. Would only recommend this listing if the bed and pillows are upgraded. Otherwise, it would be perfect.

    Ashley2016-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Modest but fit the bill for what we needed and at a great price.

    Cathy2018-04-08T00:00:00Z
  • Cozy cottage for the adventure seeking couple who don't mind natures noises. Beautiful rainforest out your back door. Ask Elle to show you the avocados to pick and ask any of the surf shop gang to show you must see places. Clean, fast communication with hosts, and prompt resolution of any problems, gets this place a high rating.

  • This place is just wonderful. Relaxed, clean, in a lovely quiet neighborhood, it's the perfect place to kick back and relax. The pictures don't do it justice. It's a lot of bang for the buck, and one of my favorite Airbnbs to date.

    Bonnie2018-04-12T00:00:00Z
  • I cannot say enough wonderful things about the Round House - it exceeded our expectations in every possible way. Don't be deterred by it being a little off the beaten path from Hilo - you have plenty of time to get where you're going. This place is worth it. Wonderful home design, beautiful layout, sparkling clean interior with great personal touches that immediately make you feel right at home but also pampered at the same time. Excellent and immediate communication from both host Sandy and Mike the on site supervisor. Every aspect of this stay was relaxing and enjoyable. We will be making this a destination stay in the future!

    Joe2018-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • Was fantastic. Super clean, had things in the fridge (thanks for this!), was a really cool space, great and quick communication, would definitely recommend. I also highly recommend the bathtub (can probably fit about 4 people). As a note, drive to the end of the road (like 5 minutes) and check out the ocean there. Super big waves!

    Erin2018-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • This place was so awesome. First we checked out of our house on the Kona side at 10:00 am, but check-in for the round house wasn’t until 3:00 pm. We had a lot of cold and frozen food we had bought at Costco so I asked if we could drop the food off before actually checking. They responded yes and made it so easy for us. Second, there was a ton of food and condiments in the pantry and frig for guests to use. The house is so homey and ample fans throughout made not having ac no problem. You won’t regret staying here. Our only regret was we didn’t stay longer!!

    Shelly2018-05-30T00:00:00Z
  • Such an awesome place! Beautiful house! Location is very quiet and easy to find. House was very clean and full of little notes everywhere explaining how everything works.

    Katy2018-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great space for the price. Our family of 4 had plenty of room and everything needed for a Hawaiian vacation. The place is a little isolated - great for privacy but it’s a bit of a drive to town. Sandy and Mike were very accessible. Thanks much!

    Jenna2018-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful time staying in the unique Roundhouse. We were very impressed with the numerous thoughtful details, such as drinking water, insect repellent, games and activities for children. It was a memorable vacation for us and our two girls!

  • A beautiful and unique house- we just loved it. Really well located for visits to the volcano park and lava flows, as well as Hilo area exploring. The round house is so nice to come back to after a long day. Really a highlight of a place to stay while visiting this special area.

  • Cutest little bungalow! Feels like you are in the middle of the Rain forest! Very cool, super clean and well kept. Diana was a great host!

  • Everything was as described in the description, my wife and I enjoyed our stay. It was just missing AC/heat unit and place doesn't have good insulation which made it difficult to get to sleep in the evenings because of heat and around 3/4 am it will get cold inside the house.

    Anudeep2018-04-02T00:00:00Z
  • Diana was so good that she couldn't do us any better. The house was very clean and quiet and everything we needed was ready. Diana gave us advice about travel and guaranteed us privacy as well. She made our trip perfect. This is the house I want to recommend to everyone.

It was clean and nicely decorated, and the hosts were very keen to help and offer tips and advice for things to do during our stay. The bungalow was well stocked with everything you might need like beach towels and snorkels, and the DVD’s and fresh fruit provided were a nice touch. We hope to return some day!

  • By far the very best Airbnb experience I have had! The cottage was stellar in every way, the perfect place if you are looking for privacy to relax in nature away from the crowds in Hilo. Small, sweet and secluded. Sitting on the little lanai with a cup of coffee while it rained in the early mornings was heavenly. The cottage was very clean, incredibly comfortable and cozy. It's about 20 minutes from Hilo which was just what I was looking for. Diana and Lando are the best hosts; super hospitable and their communication was above par. I would give this listing 10 stars if I could. I honestly did not want my vacation to end...I look forward to staying here again in the future! Thank you both for making my trip so wonderful!!!

There is little reason to leave a 10-mile radius but Hilo is only 24 miles away, Volcanoes National Park 40 miles and the Mauna Kea Observatory, where you can view through telescopes, is 50 miles. Kona is 100 miles over the new saddle road making the connection to the other side in about 2 hours. Puna Rainforest Retreat is special because you can stay in a private place in a natural setting away from the busy neighborhoods and resorts but are still close enough to enjoy the attractions.
  • Great experience! The place was adorable and had everything we needed. Very secluded and quiet... Exactly what we wanted for our getaway. Only downside is that there wasn't wifi in the cabin, i could see a signal but it didn't actually work in or around ours.

  • The Bamboo Cottage is just what we needed , a quiet retreat. Secluded, yet convenient to town. Private ,even with three other cottages on the property. The space is comfortable and well thought out . Tastefully decorated with all the amenities.

  • The Rainforest Green Bamboo Studio was PERFECT for us. We had been to a science conference in Waikoloa and had been forced to stay at the Hilton, so the change in scene to this wonderful place nestled in the rainforest was very much welcome. Oscar the cat met us as we hoped, followed us all around the rainforest trail (although we did give him a helping lift at one point when he got tired). We went to sleep to the sound of an orchestra of frogs at night, and woke up to the sunrise in the morning. We felt very close to nature, even experiencing a gentle earthquake in the middle of the night! Jacklynn was very responsive to the two questions we had whilst on site, and the cottage felt sufficiently private, even though there were 3 other cottages on the site. The cottage had everything we needed - a very decent kitchen for cooking, in fact - was clean, and easy to find from Pahoa. Well located for lots of day trips - snorkelling in Kapoho, the Volcano National Park, etc...

  • Loved this fantastic place! If you want to explore south of the island this place is excellent choice. Really clean, cute and well organized! Only 10 minutes drive to Lava viewing, which is really awesome to watch for sunset. After you drive there park your car, walk for 3 miles or rent a bike for $10 an hour and you will see the actual Lava come to the ocean. There is cool 45 minutes easy hike inside the rainforest. I definitely want to go back to awesome cottage I stayed at!

  • Second stay at the Puna Rainforest Retreat...and it was even more magical this time around. We fell asleep to the rainfall the first night--with a cool breeze that kept us comfortable throughout the night. As the sun rose--the gorgeous light fills the studio...the best alarm clock ever!!! Our only regret is that we did not spend more time exploring the grounds and kicking back by the pool. The location is perfect for exploring Kapoho Tide Pools, Kalapana, and the beauty of the Puna district. Safe location with gated in/out access make you feel safe and sound. If you missed a supplies stop in Hilo--there is a Malama Market in Pahoa that has all the basics you'd need for a 3-night stay. If you are coming in from Kona side...the lone Costco in the island is in (Website hidden by Airbnb) plan accordingly ;) Host is lovely and quick to reply! Book this place...you won't regret it! ;) PS: Wifi worked like a dream!!!

  • This place was fantastic! It was just what we were looking for in our stay on the east side. The property was easy to find, Oscar greeted us when we came and everything was like how we expected. Everything was clean and comfortable, with a great view! Perfect setting for me and my friend to just enjoy one another's company and relax. I would recommend this place to anyone and would totally stay here again when I'm on that side of the island :)

Kai Honu Hale is a 3-level 3 bedroom oceanfront house designed to make you feel like you are floating on the water. IT IS NOT IN THE AREA WITH THE NEWEST LAVA FLOW!!! Unobstructed views of the ocean with whales and turtles passing right in front. Enjoy magnificent sunrises and the sound of ocean waves with refreshing sea breezes.
What makes this space unique is that there is ocean views from every room and also from the outside lanais. The house is decorated with Hawaiian-style furnishings. There are 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and a fully-equipped kitchen. The rental has all the necessities of home. There are three huge windows in the living room letting the light permeate throughout the home. Available for use is a washer and dryer located in the garage along with a charcoal BBQ but please bring your own charcoals. The house is on the northeast coast outside of Hilo. There is excellent air quality because of the prevailing trade winds and daytime sea breezes coming off the water. The next land offshore to the northeast is California nearly 2500 miles away. A little advertised fact is that some other parts of the island of Hawaii, namely the southeast (Kau) and west (Kona) sides, are plagued by volcanic haze or vog emanating from the Kilauea volcano. This house and location rarely, if ever, have vog around. The rent which includes the 14.25% excise and transient taxes starts at $155/night for 2 guests. There are discounts for weekly and monthly visits. Each additional guest is $20/night with the taxes included. The winter months when whales may be around is from December through April and the basic rent starts at $175/night for 2 guests. The cleaning fee is $125 regardless of the length of the visit.
The neighborhood is a mixtue of private residences and vaction rentals. It's quiet and ideal for taking walks and jogs along the ocean shore and there is a small park just down Welea Street to the left upon exiting the driveway.
  • We had such a great stay. The house was perfect and the location was amazing. Thanks Liv!

  • Liv was so easy to work with! She made me feel like a welcome guest in her home although we never met in person. The house is situated on an amazing lava outcropping with the ocean waves crashing just outside. We saw many turtles and thoroughly enjoyed coffee on the lanai every morning soaking in the sights and sounds of the ocean. I have always wanted to experience a place like that! : )

  • Clean place, nicely decorated; unbeatable views. Great pick in Pahoa! We even witnessed a gorgeous rainbow over the mighty Pacific and were able to spot sea turtles riding the waves. Thanks, Liv!

    Natasha2018-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • Very comfortable felt like your own home liv provided little extras that were very helpful. Great view with crashing waves and sea turtles. Beautiful place

    Dennis2017-04-19T00:00:00Z
  • Great views and far enough out of town to avoid any of the traffic or hustle and bustle. Liv was very accommodating, helpful yet out of the way. Perfect place to hear the waves crashing on the rocks right outside the back door.

    Dave2016-12-06T00:00:00Z
  • Liv was a great host, quick responses if you needed her for any reason. The house is as described, located right on the ocean. You have a beautiful strong breeze with the sounds of waves crashing. There is no Ac but the breeze while we were there was more then enough. It is truly a beach house for sure. The house I would say is secluded as far as distance to shops and restaurants. The big island in general everything seems to be very spread out depending on what you are looking to do. But the house was very clean and beautiful and so is the location. If your looking to have a nice relaxing few days it's an awesome spot to stay with amazing views of the water and lava rock. I recommend this property. Thanks again Liv

    Matt2018-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • I have traveled to 20 + countries, using Airbnb. Liv's place is one of my favorites of all time! Staying at her house was the highlight of the entire trip! The bedrooms and the living room were facing the ocean and the view was phenomenal. We fell asleep and wake up to the sound the waves every day. The place was super well-equipped, spacious, and beautiful. We had a hard time saying goodbye to this wonderful house. Highly highly recommend!

  • My sister and I stayed for 3 nights with our dog Nitro and had an absolutely amazing time! The space is beautiful pictures don't do it any justice, very peaceful and unique considering its a 5 minute walk from the most recently lava field. Very well maintained property and home, sheets were really soft and mattress was very cozy (that's one thing to always hope for!) He was hands down the kindest, most caring and personal hosts I have ever stayed with and his dog Shadow as well! Went out of his way to make our stay and experience the best it could be and that is very much appreciated. I would HIGHLY recommend staying at this airbnb and making an extra half an hour of time to get to know the host and his amazing dog Shadow!

Small artistic space with minimal kitchen, bathroom and sleeping loft. There are 2 queen size beds. Surround by tropical rainforest Within 14 miles of Hilo and 20 miles to Kilauea Volcano. Totally off grid, Power is all solar and there is no WiFi... cooking and hot water is made possible with gas. There are peacocks and parrots on the property, so it can get noisy, but most people enjoy the “tropical rainforest sounds” Access is by rental car.
The house is private with lots of tropical plants and free ranging peacocks. Beaches, Lava viewing, and exotic local farmers markets are all within 10-30 minutes drive.
  • This is a really cute and unique airbnb! It is located along some bumpy roads so I would recommend an SUV to get here (as well as for checking out different parts of the big island). It takes about 10 minutes by car to get to the main road from the house. It's pretty similar to sleeping in a treehouse. You can hear night jungle noises (rain, birds, amphibians, etc) and chickens in the morning. If you're looking for a peaceful place away on the big island, you might want to check this one out!

    Sophia2018-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • A magical place. Very comfortable. We had a wonderful stay!

    Rachel2018-05-13T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome unique experience. If you love being in nature this is the place you'd want to experience. Unique design... secluded and private yet just a short drive to Hilo. Love the way nature is invited indoors with the large glass windows and screens. Each morning we were greeted by peacocks, peahens, chickens and roosters at the doorstep. At night we fell asleep to the sounds of a few coqui frogs, rain drops and the moonlight shining through the large kitchen window. Mornings and nights can be cool with occasional rain. Would be a great idea to bring a poncho or umbrella if you want to take a little stroll through the foliage. I also recommend you packing a pair of socks and warm sleeping clothes (during colder seasons). We just ended our stay and the nights were quite chilly as most parts of the house contains screened windows. Mara was a great host who answered our questions in a timely manner and gave us our privacy. It was a great off the grid experience. Can't wait to visit again!

    Gennie2018-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great place for a jungle experience, Beautiful sounds of the rainforest. The place is nice and private and Mara gave us plenty of space and was quick to answer any question we had. Defitnely would recommend it for a unique experience.

  • This place is beautiful inside and out!! My husband and I stayed with our kids . We used to live on the island and this property embodies everything we love and miss about home . We loved the artistic house and the kids loved the loft. Everyone loved the lush garden and the beautiful animals . It was amazing going to sleep to the sound of nature . The lava walk, beautiful beaches ( we saw whales at Kehena ) and farmers markets are all a short driving distance away.

    Mara2018-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time visiting Keaau and Hilo. Wednesday night farmers market was a blast, Carlsmith beach with giant sea turtles... amazing! The airbnb itself is LOUD at night, but if you're anything like me and my husband, you'll find the natural noises of frogs and crickets and roosters to be incredibly meditative. We slept like a log!

    Rebecca2018-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • a most Charming house in a magical rainforest. the frogs will sing you to sleep. Mara is a wonderful host and made the place special with a bouquet of freshly cut flowers on our arrival.

Our comfy 1 bedroom cottage is your tropical home away from home, with vaulted ceilings, fast wi-fi, Smart TV, comfortable pull out couch in the living room and 2 full sized beds in the bedroom. It is fully stocked if you want to cook, and is also wheelchair accessible! We are 20 minutes drive from Hilo airport, if you are flying into Kona (Keahole) airport it is a 2 hour drive.
Very open and spacious house. Please be aware there are Coqui frogs on this side of the island, they sound like birds chirping at night. This is a tropical rainforest environment, so if you are a light sleeper you may want to bring earplugs. Also, there are chickens on the property and at times neighboring roosters come into the yard and crow.
This is quiet neighborhood, the house is in a very jungle-like tropical setting.
  • Rachel was super friendly and had great suggestions in regards to places eat and visit. I would book with her again.

    Ruth2018-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • Very quaint home in a great location to travel from Hilo to Pahoa. Rachel is a thoughtful hostess who was there when we needed her and not overbearing. Great experience!

    Steven2018-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel was super nice, and I enjoyed seeing the cute free range chickens walking around! Plus she had my favorite special edition Plum Neutrogena shower gel that smells soooo good! Comfy beds, great lit places to sit & work.. close to the Makuu’u Sunday Market, and the Hot Springs.. it was a working/staycation heaven! Mahalo nui loa & A hui hou Rachel!

  • One of the best home you can rented in Hilo , really want to repeat it soon , and thanks for all your effort to make my stay there the best

    Nael2017-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel was very nice and friendly, and was responsive whenever we communicated. The place is big and is in a good location to explore the east side of the island. However, I do have to warn potential guests that it is extremely loud and impossible to get sleep here unless you have ear plugs. There are not only countless frogs, but probably 10-20 roosters on site that crow literally throughout the day, regardless of the time. Not only do they crow a sunrise, but we were waken up numerous times in the middle of the night, as well as during the day when we were trying to take naps. They are everywhere right outside of the bedroom window. Also, expect to see dead bugs in the house, we even found a dead cockroach stuck in a spider web in the kitchen.

    Chihiro2017-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • My partner, his two children, and I stayed at Rachel's place for a weekend trip to the Big Island. The cottage was as described. It was clean, and it is a welcoming space. There are some family games on the shelf, and we enjoyed playing these in the evening. The girls loved feeding the chickens and playing with the baby chicks. The full kitchen was great. Rachel's mom checked us in, and she was very friendly and welcoming. We loved the tips on what to check out, where to eat, etc. The cottage does get a bit chilly during the night in the late fall/winter. There are fans in a few of the windows, so you can't close them completely. There are extra blankets in the closet, so that helped. Mahalo for a great stay!

  • Very clean, beautiful house in great location. Daryl is a great guy who was very responsive to his guests. I stayed two different times, in two different, and was highly pleased each time. I will certainly stay with Daryl if I need lodging in the area. Daryl was very engaging and we talked for hours. Another guest just wanted privacy and he got it. There are several room choices and access to a well appointed kitchen, game room, and comfortable living room.

  • Daryl is an amazing host and was friendly, warm and welcoming. As well as a great space (which provided a cool respite from the humidity) Daryl was happy to provide tips on where to go for sights and food. Without his advice we would never have found or walked across the new lava flows! Would recommend Daryl and the room to anyone. Thank you!

This little screened-in, open-air Hale is nestled in a native Ohia rainforest between Hilo & Pahoa. The Hale is completely off-the-grid, uses solar power (generator backup) and has rain catchment. Private outdoor bathroom and shower. Secure, covered parking available. There is no kitchen and no refrigeration, but there is a camping stove and utensils plus a cooler to store all food - if your items are perishable, bring ice!
  • The Cary's and Bob's place is trully amazing. Very clean and nice place, bed is so comfortable. The location is great for Volcano National Park as well as Hilo, beaches and many other sites. But we loved our stay not only because of the accomodation as such but mainly because of the owners. Cary and Bob are great hosts and they will make you feel like home. Very easy going and kind and helpful people. I definitively recommend the place and if I am back in Hawaii, this is the place I would love to be.

    Ewa2017-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • This was such a special place to stay, thanks to the land Cary and her husband transformed into a tropical sanctuary, and thanks to their warmth as hosts. Thanks to their advice we enjoyed an incredible evening at the lava flows, and slept peacefully through the night at their guest house. I hope to have an opportunity to return here.

    Megan2017-10-30T00:00:00Z
  • Cary was a very good host, she was detailed in her explanation to reach their secluded paradise and was very quick to respond to our questions throughout our stay. Her place is isolated from big cities, the outside shower and quietness of her property were really something we will cherish for a long time. The proximity to the volcano made it easy to do the sunrise lava trek too which is a must for every visitor!

    Diego2018-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • Cary was such an amazing host. It felt like I was visiting a friend. Her little cabin was amazing! I really miss it already. It was such neat experience for my kiddos to see the example of living off the grid that is so wonderfully different comparing to a city life ... It makes me want to re-consider how we live. I am so impressed what Carry and her husband did with their property. Gorgeous! We felt fortunate to be this family’s guests. Thank you!

    Julia2018-07-09T00:00:00Z
  • This place is just perfect! Amazingly cute cabin and it comes with the greatest hosts you could imagine. Cary and Bob: you are amazing!

    Cornelia2017-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • Cary’s land was beautiful. Very secluded and literally as if you were caping out in the wild but with four walls and a roof over your head. Maybe not suited for someone who doesn’t like camping/ being out in the wild but for those that do, totally recommended. There is a shower and bathroom in the back, very clean and surprising not many bugs. Would recommend to arrive while it is still light out since the driveway was a bit hard to tell in the dark (although Cary gave out very helpful detailed instructions so we were able to figure this out on our own) Cary and her husband were very responsive, very helpful and totally enjoyed this airbnb. Not something you can experience anywhere. For wildlife lovers, would totally recommend you to stay.

    Eimi2018-06-24T00:00:00Z

Private Studio with kitchenette, shower, double bed, couch, and tv. Everything you need for your vacation. Centrally located between Hilo, Volcano, Hot Ponds, and the active lava flow. 7 miles from downtown Pahoa in the Ainaloa Subdivision.
Rural Neighborhood with mostly undeveloped lots for a secluded experience.
  • Place is fine - just make sure your phone works or get directions before you start driving. My cell coverage was spotty in this area.

    Pia2017-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Was a good bang for the buck, could be a bit cleaner though. Area is very calm but quite remote.

  • We had a bit of a mix up as a result of a glitch in AirBNB's booking system, but Lance resolved the problem quickly and fairly, and in the end it was a positive experience! I'd stay here again if I'm in the area.

    Terray2018-06-03T00:00:00Z
  • The description of this place is completely accurate- when Lance says it's secluded, he means it. We drove there at night and the winding, unpaved roads in the area took a little time to get used to. You would definitely need a car to get here, but parking is easy. Check in was simple, internet was great, we had no issues with phone reception. We didn't meet our host during our trip. Be mindful of the coqui frogs calling (they are very loud here) and when we visited the area got a lot of rain, which was also loud. It didn't bother us but it may bother others. The area is very secluded so the frogs chirp up a storm. The space is fitted out with everything needed for cooking- coffee machine, fridge freezer, oven and all crockery and cutlery, which was a great way for us to save some cash at the end of our trip.

There's even a loft in the unit to store your extra luggage, or you may perch there yourself for a quiet meditation. There are plenty of windows and a french door opening to the lanai where you can gaze at the palm trees, ferns, banana trees, and large Norfolk pines. Enjoy listening to the ironwood tree as the breeze blows through. The walls and roof are well insulated so you'll feel protected even during a passing rain. My art studio is nearby. You may well find some of my original watercolors and landscape paintings adorning your walls.
Kehena Beach: (1.5 miles way) a stunning black sand beach (clothing optional). On the right day, you might have the opportunity to swim with the dolphins that frequent the coastline. Red Road: Kalapana-Kapoho Beach road, You can drive down the 'Red Road' for about 8 miles and enjoy the magical tree tunnels and ocean view lookouts along one of Hawaii's most beautiful coastal routes. Parking is available where the road ends at MacKenzie State Park. Catch stunning views of the Pacific lava cliffs or hike over the new lava path (or rent a bike) to visit Pohoiki oceanfront park. There you can soak in naturally heated ponds or sunbathe on the newest black sand beach in the world. Uncle Robert's Awa Bar and Farmers Market: Uncle Robert's is a must see weekly event on Wednesday nights. Uncle Robert's offers local, live Hawaiian music, dancing, delicious food vendors, fruits and vegetable stands, and unique local craft vendors (4 miles) Pahoa town is a 20 minute drive. There are good restaurants, art galleries, boutiques, and a local museum. There is a wonderful yoga studio just 3 blocks from my house available offering daily yoga classes and weekly music concerts.
