Places to stay in Polbain
Unique, architect designed, one bedroom, self-contained accommodation for up to two people, situated on our croft in Inverkirkaig near Lochinver. We have 2 purpose-built micro-houses (Lazybed Accommodation) both privately situated and surrounded by stunning scenery. It is possible to book either cabin (for less) through us directly if you wish.
Lazybed is a bespoke micro-house with an interior of 31sqm, built in 2011 by North Woods Construction Ltd. utilising 100% renewable Scottish timber. The high sloping ceiling and 3 metre front windows create a roomy, luxurious, livable space tucked in amongst trees. Sheep’s wool insulates the property throughout whilst hot water is powered by a mini, Norwegian-manufactured, boiler system. The main room has a wood-burning stove (and electric heater) keeping the cabin lovely and warm for those occasions when the weather turns inclement. The accommodation consists of a lounge /well equipped kitchen, a separate cosy kingsize/twin bedroom, a bathroom with a walk-in shower, toilet and wash hand basin. There is a generously sized deck area with views South West to Inverkirkaig’s tranquil sea loch and the wonderfully remote peninsular of Rubha na Breige. We now have another cabin for holiday bookings (the Batbox) on the east side of our bungalow and about 65 metres from Lazybed. It is possible to book either cabin (for less) through us directly. Please check all terms & cancellation conditions before making a booking.
Lazybed is located, adjacent to the owner's house, on their small croft in Inverkirkaig, a lovely coastal settlement, a few miles south of Lochinver and about 40 miles north of Ullapool. This area of the magnificent North West Highlands is known as Assynt, a geographically and geologically remarkable landscape. Many of Scotland’s most individual and charismatic mountains are close by and the stunning coastline stretches north to the white sandy beaches of Achmelvich, Oldshoremore and Sandwood Bay and south to the wild, rocky coves and shell sands of Wester Ross. A multitude of trout-filled lochs cover the hinterland and the beautiful River Kirkaig, with its excellent salmon fishing and waterfall path, is only 10 minutes walk from the door. Continue beyond the falls passing Fionn Loch and eventually reach the summit of Suilven, northern Scotland’s most iconic peak. Walking, kayaking, fishing or simply relaxing, this beautiful area of Scotland has it all.
  • Truly magical place. Highly recommended.

  • Great cabin - amazing location

  • We spent our New Year’s Eve in the cabin and it was the perfect way to see in the new year completely secluded, with great views of the the bay and the stars at night. The cabin has everything you need and the log burner kept it lovely and toasty!

  • This is a lovely place to stay, everything required for a short stay and super helpful hosts too. We loved the garden, the views, the bench, everything!

    Iain2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at the Lazybed cabin for our mini-moon and it was a perfect escape from the hecticness of our special day. The place was perfect . David and Gita included thoughtful extra touches for us to celebrate our wedding, and were also incredibly helpful when we had car trouble! Even if the weather was mainly rubbish we had a fab time hanging out by the fire, and when the sun came out, nothing beat sitting on the bench with a beer, reading and looking over the Loch 💕

  • A lovely cabin in a beautiful part of the world. Well worth a visit

    Anna2019-03-25T00:00:00Z
  • The Lazybed was superb. We loved its eco credentials and the house has been really well thought through. We will definitely stay again and have recommended the Lazybed to several friends. The photos don't do this place justice, hugely snug and spacious. The surrounding area is amazing and the lazybed is fantastically located for hiking. Thanks again Gita for your great hospitality!

  • Had a great stay at Ian’s place. He gave us detailed instructions since sat nav and mobile coverage up there is spotty so found the place with ease. He gave us spot on recommendations for the pub down the road and we had an amazing meal there. And the views from the sitting room, out onto the water were amazing. Would stay here again :)

  • A comfortable bothan at a secluded location, equipped with everything you need. The rules may be a bit more emphasized than usually, and Ian will take a good look at you – no doubt some guests in the past misbehaved a bit –, but he is a genial, thoughtful and attentive host. I definitely recommend the bothan, we had a good time there, and it is quite a special place. Everything is clean and in good condition.

Ian made us feel very welcome and we were delighted to find that the house not only had absolutely superb views but was full of lovely little touches that made it feel comfortable, homely and so much more than a holiday cottage. Would definitely like to return.

    Linda2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at this beautiful cabin as part of our nc500 journey. The space was absolutely spotless and decorated perfectly. It was also much bigger than we expected from the photos! The hot tub was very private and the fairy lights made it just perfect at nighttime as we sat looking at the stars. The little touches such as dressing gown and slippers made this stay feel luxurious. Thank you for an amazing stay!

    Laura2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • A treat of a pod to stay in for the weekend. So clean, lots of nice touches like robes, slippers, ice machine for a complementary nip. the hot tub was the reason we booked and it was fantastic, overlooking lochinver harbour but not overlooked. We would definitely recommend and return.

The room was very comfortable and well equipped, I particularly liked the eye masks to block out the 3am daylight! Breakfast was a magnificent spread of juices, tea, coffee, cereals, toast, crumpets, potato scones, toast, jams, spreads, meat and cheeses! We would certainly return if up that way again.

  • My father and I stayed three nights at Iain’s cottage. It was wonderful. The local area is stunning. The cottage itself is cosy (especially with the fire going!) yet more spacious than I expected, and really well set up. Everything we needed was there - from wood and kindling for the fire to kitchen supplies and books to read. And incredibly comfy sofas! Iain was absolutely delightful and gave us some great tips for local places to visit. All in all I would highly recommend and will definitely go back if I have the chance! Thanks Iain!

This modern and comfortable chalet is in the North West Highland village of Achiltibuie. With its large picture windows and decked terrace it is a perfect spot to relax and unwind. The views over the Summer Isles and the mountains are stunning as are the dramatic sunsets and starry night skies. There is a bright and airy open plan living area, two bedrooms a shower room and of course wi-fi. The perfect base for exploring, walking, climbing, kayaking, fishing and so much more.
The local crofting and fishing community has a rich history and was a gaelic speaking area until recent times. It is now a Scottish Wildlife Trust Reserve, ideal for hill walkers and nature lovers. The chalet is in easy walking distance of The Piping School Café, Local Artists Gallery, Community Hall and the Summer Isles Hotel.
  • The cabin is cosy and comfortable and the location is hard to beat. Una is a great host and was helpful with local knowledge including the visit at the village hall by the fish van! The summer isles hotel is excellent for fine dining or a bar meal and the Am Fuaran Bar at Althandu is much better than either the outside or the inside decor suggests and definitely worth a visit. Brilliant seafood platter. Wherever you eat, the seafood is fresh and local.

    Ben2019-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • We spent 3 nights at Una's place. The location is absolutely stunning (can't beat those views!). The accommodation was also super cosy for that time of year. Una was very responsive and accommodating. We would definitely recommend for anybody in search of a special place to stay in that area.

    Isabelle2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • The chalet is positioned in the most perfect place with incredibly and far reaching views. The large windows mean that whatever the weather you can appreciate where you are. The chalet is compact, clean, comfortable and provides all the facilities you need.

  • We just stayed for four nights in the chalet and loved it. Everything you need and feels homely and warm, with the most fantastic views. We did walks nearby (saw ptarmigan), took our kayaks out on a nearby loch, and saw deer both in the area and also just beneath the chalet on the edge of the loch. The chalet was the perfect base. Would very highly recommend!

The room we stayed in was extremely comfortable and cosy and we had an amazing view on the lake nearby. Communication went easy as could be. We definitely recommend it! • The Turf House is a cosy, traditional cottage in one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland. Sheila provided a warm welcome (literally) with the stove already lit on our arrival. The rooms are large and comfortable, and the nearby beach is perfect for stormy winter walks with the dog. This was our second time, and I hope we’ll be back soon!

  • Wonderful cottage with spectacular views in a beautiful part of Scotland. Highly recommended!

  • A cosy wee house with the most spectacular of views. The comfy bed and gargantuan bath made it difficult to leave. Stunning area populated with very friendly folk. We'll be back in more clement weather.

  • My husband and I, along with our springer spaniel spent Christmas at the Turf House. What a unique property in such a beautiful setting. The views from the living area are breathtaking, and different every hour as the light and weather changes. Perfect for cosying up with the log burner on. The area is outstanding, I've lived in Scotland all my life and cannot believe I've only just visited here. The landscape is incredible and there is so much to explore on foot and on day trips. Our highlight was spotting seals off the coast of the peninsula! Thank you Sheila for a very special holiday.

    Jennifer2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • We had the best holiday at Sheila’s house. The house itself is incredible. It offers beautiful views on the hills, is very cosy with a log fire and is located only at a 10min walk from the beach. We highly recommend this house, and we hope to be back again soon.

    Jil2019-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Unfortunately, we were only three nights in this beautiful, very cozy and very special stone cottage. The scenery is fantastic and the beach within 15 minutes easy to reach. Sheila and her husband are very attentive and welcoming hosts. We felt comfortable around us. Especially the evenings by the fireplace with a brilliant view through the picture windows will be remembered for a long time. To chill out a perfect place. Thank you Sheila!

    Daniela2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • The Turf House is totally unique and delightful - how can somewhere be so spacious and so cosy all at the same time? We had some lovely walks around the area, particularly the spectacular Stac Polly. And the sandy beach is indeed only 10 minutes away. We had brought quite a lot of supplies which was good because in the end we stayed in, lit the log burner, cooked and drank in the view from the picture windows every night. We had planned to venture out in search of pubs/eateries but I think there are just two, in the area, and the Turf House just lured us in! Thanks for a lovely few days, Sheila - we should have booked more.

    Janet2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • An exceptional place. A beautiful little house ideal for lovers. Fire wood, four-poster bed, a bathroom worthy of a castle. Dare to spend several days in this little haven of peace. The beach next to the house is beautiful. 5 stars !

The Hideaway with private outdoor hot tub and spectacular view is a luxurious cosy cabin overlooking the bay of Lochinver and the Assynt mountains. The property is open plan and features a superking size bed, high quality armchairs, a sleek kitchen and a flat screen tv. From the main living area, french doors lead to a generously sized balcony featuring a BBQ, wood burning stove, seating and stunning sea and mountain views.
Baddidarroch is a quiet area on the outskirts of Lochinver, with beautiful views across the bay to the mountains beyond, and within walking distance of local amenities.
  • The Hideaway is a great little hidden gem. We didn’t get to use the patio area because of the weather but if the weather was good it would be great to sit out in the evening and enjoy the view. Everything was spotlessly clean and we had very good communication with Jason. We did use the hot tub despite the wind and rain which was great. Disappointed that no restaurants open or take away options so had to get food from the spar. But I guess it’s the time of year.

  • A perfect and peaceful getaway for me and my partner. Lovely personal touches and an overall amazingly refurbished tiny home. The hot tub was the highlight for us, with a beautiful view across the bay. Our little cat loves to come on our adventures with us and he loved exploring the surrounding area. I’d recommend the Hideaway to anybody and really look forward to coming back!

  • Jason’s Hideaway in Lochinver was everything we had hoped for and more. We could not fault this little haven of tranquility! Although we didn’t have much sunshine this weekend to go with it, the hot tub was a dream and a great way to end the day. The cabin was immaculate and well equipped with everything you could need - we were worried we hadn’t brought enough stuff with us for the weekend but there was no need to worry as we had everything there. The fire was a great addition as well, especially as we had a chillier evening. All in all a fabulous getaway and we will definitely be back - 10/10.

Coillessan Lodge is situated in Inverkirkaig, just a couple of minutes walk from the beautiful Inverkirkaig Bay. The picturesque village of Lochinver is just a short drive away.
We have a lovely spacious living/dining area on the upper floor which opens out onto a small lit balcony.
Peaceful area close to Inverkirkaig Bay. Achins bookshop is not far and also the Kirkaig Falls.
  • This is a very thoughtfully constructed lodge which is well appointed warm and cosy. It is situated in an excellent location betwixt mountains and sea. The surrounding area of mountains and coast is unsurpassed on this unique island of ours.😊😊 exceptional!

  • We loved staying at the lodge. It is very homely and a minute walk from the bay. Both in rain and sunshine it was wonderful to stay here and very well equipped! I cannot recommend this place enough!

  • STAY HERE!! Coilessan is a beautiful cozy modern wooden home in the stunning hamlet of Inverkirkaig. Clean, well equipped, beautiful location , fab balcony and nice safe garden - and it’s all just meters away from the shore (perfect for sea kayaking). We have stayed here twice before and we be back again. This is my dream home! We enjoyed our home made meals both outside and upstairs in the fabulous lounge. This time M and I took the bunk room (we had friends with us), and we were v comfortable - the bunk beds are a good size for tall adults ....2m long and a decent width. We did some lovely walks, wild swims and of course a spot of kayaking on glassy water. Turquoise beaches, abundant wildlife ( spotted water vole, a slow worm, various frogs and one toad, a dragons flies, bumble bees, siskins and a vocal tawny owl all in the garden). Elaine and Charlie are lovely hosts. Spend time at this lovely home and you’ll not be disappointed! Hoping the wooden bear will be back too

Old style B&B; you'll have a room in my home, and share the bathroom with me. My flat is clean, bright, newly refurbished, and boasts an ideal location in the harbour area. Sea views and walking distance to bars and retaurants. The property is on the top floor so is very quiet. Lochinver is a great base along the NC500 route & for exploring the stunning landscapes of Assynt. There's a lot to do in the area if you love natural beauty, with walks straight from the door.
My flat is part of a historic, old Victorian building, and as such has quite a quirky character. The floorboards are slightly uneven and the walls are a bit lumpy but for most people this just adds to the charm! There are 6 flights of stairs to climb, as I'm on the top floor, but it's worth it :)
Lochinver is a small, friendly village popular with visitors in summer and relatively sleepy in winter. During the season there are several eateries offering evening meals all within easy walking distance of the flat. During the winter months the choices are reduced but there are still options, and the village boasts 2 pubs/bars, which occasionally have live music. The Culag woods with excellent paths is very close to my apartment and is a good place for a sheltered stroll at any time of the year. Alternatively, a short walk along to the marina might be rewarded by otter sightings while eagles are regularly seen overhead. Lochinver is a thriving (if small) tourist hub with well-stocked grocery shops, a famous pie shop, gift shops and a gallery showing the work of local artists, while no visit would be complete without a trip to Highland Stoneware pottery.

Would recommend booking Peets as it’s busy because the food is amazing!! We liked the house and the kitchen is stocked with everything you would need. It was a great base for coming back to after a full days walking up the mountain! Thanks again!

Our handmade timber pods are fully insulated and feature underfloor heating, making them ideal for when the weather is more Motherwell than Miami. Each pod has a living space with L-shape sofa & dining table and a kitchenette with over/hob, fridge & Belfast sink. The pods can comfortably sleep 4 (1 double bed and 1 double sofa bed) and have an en suite WC with on demand hot water & electric shower. All of our pods feature WiFi, in-built Bluetooth sound systems, smart TVs & USB wall sockets.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that you’d been teleported to the Caribbean upon stepping foot on Achmelvich beach. The fine white sandy beach and turquoise water of the bay are at first a stark contrast to the rugged beauty of the surrounding Assynt area. Sand castle builders, water-skiers, sail boats, swimmers, kayakers & fishing enthusiasts alike, are a common sight in and around Achmelvich bay. At night there are often (responsibly managed) bonfires where friends will share a drink or two. There’s something magical about the place and the people who visit time and time again. Our pods are a mere 2 minute walk from this stunning, clean and often bustling beach. Why don’t you join us?
  • Brilliant pods in a wonderful place. The perfect base for exploring the local area.

Lochinver Holiday Lodges are set in a picturesque location, about a mile south of Lochinver village, nestled at the foot of birch clad hills in 14 acres of private Highland wilderness. The well equipped properties are set around large garden lawns and all face the sea with fabulous views west over Strathan Bay. Heron take up vigil on the rocks ever on the lookout for an unwary crab. Seal, porpoise and otter can sometimes be seen from the shore and the bay echoes with the call of the oyster catchers, eider ducks and many other sea birds. This is the perfect place to relax in peace and tranquillity or to use as a comfortable base from which to explore the area’s many beautiful and stunning attractions. Tigh na Tilleadh is a fully-equipped, hundred and thirty year old croft house, with living-room, dining room and kitchen in a tranquil region of outstanding natural beauty overlooking the sea and the Summer Isles. It is not in a B&B. It is in a family home, into which you are invited and which you will share. The room is straight-forward with a single bed, cupboard and shelving.
The Tigh has a good, fully equipped kitchen. The dining room has a large table for everyone. The living is comfortable with an open-fire. The bathroom has a bath with a power-shower. Heating and hot water are produced by an oil boiler, electricity and the fire when used. We have extra beds, a cot and a high-chair that can put at your disposal.
Polbain offers tranquility above all. It is quiet with quite superb views over the seas and Summer Isles. Coigach as a wholes has wonderful walking, the superb Achnahaird beach and some of the best sea-kayaking in Britain as well as a good shop and two bars and restaurants.
  • Magic place to stay, in a beautiful setting!

    James2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • Ian's place is by the remote village of Achiltibuie but thanks to spot on directions is easy to find day or night. I had a small room with everything I needed, close to the bathroom and shower, which as a walker is appreciated! The area is great for walking and exploring so if that is your thing I think you will like it here. I walked around Stac Pollaidh one of the days which is very easy to get to by car. Other destinations are close by such as the beautiful beach at Achmelvich. One or two things deserve a special mention. I booked at short notice and Ian and Marie Claire's hospitality was second to none. I was provided with an excellent breakfast each day, included in the price of booking, and I was able to join them to see in the New Year, which was appreciated. Another thing I would like to note is that, leaving in a bit of a rush, I forgot to bring my maps - Ian graciously provided his for me to use for the duration of my stay. Ian was more than happy to tell me a bit about the local area which I loved hearing about because I think it's important to know a little bit at least about where you're staying. The pub a couple of miles down the road was able to accommodate me for a really lovely meal at very short notice on New Years' Eve - which was also very much appreciated. A wonderful part of the world to visit and very nice hosts. Thank you Ian.

    Ian2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • I chose this place on relatively short-term for some nights for different reasons, one of them being the western islands' Puffins. Seek for calm and trust and goodwill? Searching for a BnB, done the old way? Need a break from drive-thru tourism? Look no further, here you will find it! Won't find any Puffins though, I grant you that. Ian has not only his striking hospitality to offer, but a load of Scottish lore and bold conversation, too. In at least five different languages. You'll also get a distinct No on "the keys please!", "water-drop the whiskey?" and "any Puffins on Handa?". Good and steady base for trips to the Ullapool-, west- and northcoast areas. Beautiful view on the "Summer"-Isles and beyond. Worthwhile for getting a taste of Scottish Highland remoteness. Apt to intensify a lasting longing for Puffins.

  • Had a very enjoyable four-day stay with Ian. There's a lot to see in the area but perhaps the best thing is the total change in pace and approach to life. Ian was a great host - very informal, interesting and entertaining, knowledgeable about all sorts of topics and excellent on local advice. You'll remember your stay here.

  • It's a great place to stay. The landscape, the house and Ian are unique!

  • Amazing area, so beautiful ! ... and great house with a very friendly and interesting host. I will come back the day I travel back to Scotland !

    Pierre2019-07-24T00:00:00Z
  • Great place, friendly, relaxed atmosphere. As stated in the listing, this is not a typical B&B - rather a room in a private house. Informal, relaxed, friendly. Ian is a bit of a raconteur, full of interesting stories and perspectives on life now and in eariler times in Achiltibuie and more generally Scotland. Definitely worth a return visit.

This newly built large two bedroom bungalow is situated two miles from the picturesque fishing village of Lochinver in Assynt. The area is ideal if you wish to get away from it all. Walking, fishing, wildlife and beautiful beaches are just a few of the activities you can enjoy whilst staying in this part of the Highlands..... an area renowned for its wild splendour and beauty. From the large lounge windows you can take in the panoramic views of the Minch and watch fishing boats passing by.
Our house, known as Craigann has its own access with plenty car park space. It is a two bedroom spacious detached bungalow. It has just been built...2019 is our first year we are renting it out. The views are fantastic looking out onto the Minch and Loch Inver. On a clear day you can see the Island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. The garden plot is fenced off so that sheep can’t encroach. There is also access onto two small rocky beaches. The croft consists of 16 acres of rough grazing for sheep.
Lochinver is situated in the wild and beautiful area known as Assynt. The village is known for its fishing and boasts its own natural harbour. It has a good selection of restaurants, small shops and cafes. Just 15 minutes drive away are the spectacular beaches of Achmelvich and Clachtoll. If you like walking there are a number of great routes both easy and of a more challenging nature (climbing Suilvenl, Quinag or Ben More Assynt for example). Sailing, canoeing, kayaking, cycling, fishing and climbing are all available locally. There are 200 or so lochans in the area which makes the place very popular with anglers too. You can of course just fish from the rocks below the house. There are a number of suggested locations where you may be able to spot particular wildlife, including deer, seals, otters, pine Martin, heron, the occasional eagle as well as a variety of interesting fauna. Almost daily you will spot deer in our croft. We are just two miles from the village where you will find small local shops and high quality restaurants. The large fish market is probably the villages main focus. Other tourist attractions include Highland Stoneware, one of the Highland’s most successful and distinctive potteries.
  • A beautiful house in a super location!Very welcoming hosts on our arrival and we found the place to be very clean, comfortable, cosy and well equipped with stunning views. We couldn’t have picked a better base for our west coast holiday and hope to return again at some point in the future. Ideal location for both stunning beaches and easy access to the hills for walking as well. All in all a brilliant stay!

  • Such a beautiful location and a lovely little cottage. Highly recommend. Only thing to bear in mind is the stairs are quite steep so would be a challenge with crawling babies - our baby is not quite crawling yet and there was plenty of practice space so it was perfect for us.

  • Wonderful little cottage with a view to die for! Close to some incredible hills to walk up or around. Una was a true delight and even lent us her BBQ on one of the days that we were staying. A real find!

    Thomas2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Una’s cottage was a special and very lucky wee find for us. Perfect and cosy facilities for three of us (could have been four) with everything we needed, including comfy beds, powerful shower (which doesn’t deviate from the temperature set) and a decent broadband connection just for starters. The view across Loch Broom and the Summer Isles will take your breath away and is one I could never get tired of.... who needs the internet. A truly magical location - thank you Una.
