Places to stay in Rangihaeata
We are excited to welcome you to our listing , our new beautiful cottage set on an organic coastal property with stunning views over the ocean. We have private swimming and kayaking off the land (tidal) . Peaceful and private, this is the perfect retreat to enjoy the myriad of birdlife and ever-changing ocean/estuary views. We are centrally located in sub-tropical Golden bay only 5 minutes from Takaka village and another minute to Paynes Ford rock-climbing and river holes.
This new cottage is made of untreated cedar and oiled with natural oils so not only is it non-toxic but it smells divine! Set in a private garden with complimentary organic veggies the view overlooks the estuary and ocean.Because we want to enhance the connection to nature, our new bathroom and kitchen are 20 metres away from the cabin.. thereby providing an opportunity to enjoy the moonlight!. We are proud of our all season bathroom and because we believe in conserving our beautiful water we have installed a Swedish designed compost toilet.( So please be aware this is not a flush toilet! )Also our latex and organic cotton queen bed is in the loft and is accessed by an easy ladder(so a certain amount of mobility is required!). If Sunrise cottage is booked Pls check our other listing- Nazmina bus by the sea.
The neighbourhood is rural, quiet and peaceful. There are 3 different beaches accessed by an easy walk from our place.
  • Awesome scenery. Complimentary use of kayaks was a big bonus. Paddles right next to a fur seal at a point that was a miniature pancake rocks!

  • This is a converted shipping container home which we were quite interested to try out having some interest in the idea. It was very comfortable with well designed spaces that work well in the small total space available. The home has a substantial lot and a lovely large sunny deck. Slight drawback from a little road noise but that didn't bother us at all. Recommended

    Regine2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is one of, if not the best Airbnb we have stayed at. The location is fantastic being a short drive into the lovely town of Takaka and within walking distance to a beautiful beach. The cottage itself was perfect for our family, travelling with a baby it is often difficult to find accommodation where we can happily let our little one crawl around and explore but the cottage was spotlessly clean and my little one very much loved crawling around and playing with the toys that Fumiko and Richard provided. The house sits within manicured grounds overlooking a fruit trees and paddocks. My little girl really loved the Bob and Boo Boo, the two little pigs, as well as the chickens. The cottage was well stocked with quality crockery and cooking utensils. We were a little worried that the cottage would be really hot without having AC, however, it was really cool inside as the windows could be slid fully open and the insect covers meant no creepy crawlers could get into the cottage. All in all we had such a great stay and will definitely come back should we ever be lucky enough to make it back to Golden Bay. I would very much recommend staying here if you visit Golden Bay.

Stop looking and start booking! We had a great first season last Summer. We’ve listened to our guests and made some changes as we want to increase your overall experience and lift from 4.8 to 5 Stars. This is the ideal spot to return to after a busy day sightseeing. NOTE: Maximum occupancy is 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children (under 12). See you soon!
Situated at the rear of the property our little Bungalow is perfectly placed. Enjoy the picturesque views over the surrounding farmland, wander the orchards and pick fruit, collect fresh eggs from the chook run, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet on your own private deck. We are centrally located in Golden Bay, just 5 minutes from Takaka and more importantly, the Mussel Inn! We're 10 minutes from Collingwood. From here it is equal distance across the bay to all the major attractions whether you're heading West to Wharariki Beach or East into the Abel Tasman. We recommend staying 3 nights as this gives you two full days to explore many of the sights.
We are rurally situated. Our nearest neighbour is about 200m away. We are surrounded by farmland, so we're sometimes surrounded by dairy cows. Apart from the odd truck going by it is a very peaceful place.
  • We had a great time here, highly recommend

  • This place is the best. Gorgeous inside and out. I loved having the private patio with BBQ grill, garage, tub with shower over, and a little window in the shower to bring that extra bit of refreshment. Press pot with good coffee supplied- heaven. Nice tea variety too. Oh and the fresh milk in the fridge- so nice. Huge bed, lots of pillows, lovely view on the patio, heater for the cool mornings, all made it so I did not want to leave. Fortunately had 2 nights here and highly recommend. Location is very good, between Collingwood and Takaka, with lots to do and see in the area. Hosts are fantastic.

Named after my Gypsy hearted grandmother, Alma May, is a glorious retro caravan (although she’s quite modest about it all). She’s cheap n cheerful and packed with quirks and charm. She’s a lover of nature and the outdoors which fortunately fits with her alfresco shower and earthy compost mushroom shaped toilet. Alma May loved having visitors to host and create stories and adventure with. Priced at half the cost of a camp site in Pohara, she’s a right bargain.

  • We had a lovely stay and enjoyed the space, it's a beautiful cabin in lovely bush, though relatively close to other properties it felt secluded and private the whole time. And the cat was a good time.

We had a fabulous couple of nights in this spacious, clean and well equipped apartment while we crammed as much as we could fit into our trip to Golden Bay. The outdoor living space and outlook is lovely too. Gail is a fabulous and friendly host who looked after us very well.

Thanks Gail

Situated a short drive from Takaka, tucked away in a huge back garden, is a private, cosy, warm and self-contained yurt with lovely mountain and garden views. The yurt is surrounded by fruit trees and veggie beds, which guests are welcome to use. The Garden Yurt is an ideal place to use as a base to unwind, switch off and recharge while on your travels or on holiday. A quiet weekend get away to Golden Bay is complete with a quiet, central and private base. Who doesn't want to sleep in a yurt?!
The yurt has solid wooden floors, is light and warm, has a kitchenette with oven, gas hob, coffee and tea making facilities, and a good range of pots, pans, cutlery and plates etc. It has a fire, is insulated and ventilated. Yurt living is relatively simple but highly functional and convenient, helped along by solar power. The composting toilet and outdoor shower are basic, yet well functioning and easy to use, and are right next to the yurt for your convenience. Children are more than welcome for a small added cost. The yurt has a double bed and if children are coming, a single mattress and/or portacot available on request. All bedding provided. For those of you looking for a glamping luxury retreat - while this is clean, tidy, water tight, has power and is warm, it also has a rustic charm! Please be prepared for the 'nuances' of yurt life. You do need to read the instructions for the various 'functions' carefully, and just ask us if you need a hand! From time to time things will be temperamental, however we are here to help and happy to do so! Children do live on the property :) Small fridge available in the yurt, and a separate fridge and washing machine available at the house for you to utilise if needed. If you are looking for a private, spacious, clean, tidy, well looked after, dry, cosy and comfortable retreat after an adventure or two in the great outdoors of Mohua, Golden Bay, look no further.
Golden Bay/Mohua is renowned for it's beautiful beaches, rivers, mountains and national parks. We are a 2 minute drive from some of the best coffee and kai in NZ, and rivers are also 2 mins away.
  • The yurt is warm, with a lovely fire and cosy bed. Very close to nature. I would recommend for a nice private quiet place to stay in Takaka

  • Great location, newly renovated guest suite with probably the faster internet connection we've had so far in NZ, which came in super handy when having to deal with all the cancellations and rebookings due to this wee bug going around. Christine and Peter were very understanding and accomodating, providing useful tips on getting around as well as a great welcome and a send off. Would definitely visit again.

    Karolis2020-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • This is a superior bnb. Christine and Peter have given great thought to ensuring their guests have everything they need for a comfortable stay. They welcomed us very warmly. The location is ideal for the beach, food outlets and for nearby sightseeing.

    Terry2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Christine & Peter's place. On our travels through North and South Island we've stayed in quite a few airbnb properties and this was the best in terms of decor, amenities, location and all the little extras the hosts provide, as well as being immaculately clean. The complimentary breakfast is delicious and plentiful and includes tasty homemade jams. Peter and Christine are warm and welcoming and gave us lots of tips for places to visit locally. If you are looking to stay in the Golden Bay area this is the place to pick - cannot recommend highly enough.

    Steven2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Christine and David are wonderful hosts, we really enjoyed our three nights staying at their premises. The location is perfect for visiting Abel Tasman or the Farewell Spit. There are plenty of beautiful beaches nearby, in fact you just need to cross the street for a swim. Takaka with its restaurants, bars and supermarkets is just a 15min drive away, but there are also nice options in walking distance. We would definitely come back!

  • Our stay in Pohara was very nice. Christine and Peter are kind and friendly hosts, who provided us with everything we needed: travel advice, tipps and homegrown peaches! The apartment is tidy and clean, located in a calm area close to the beach. We spent two wonderful days there - one hiking adventure in the Abel Tasman Park and another day in the Golden Bay. Thank you for everything!

    Gaia2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • This is a nicely furnished, clean studio in a quiet neighborhood with off-street parking - and is convenient to Takaka and surrounding areas and activities.   The bed and couch are comfortable, the bathroom is a generous size, and the kitchen area provides enough kitchenware/appliances for a simple meal or snacks.  There is fast internet, beach chairs, and a portable fan (in case you get warm). The hosts are wonderful, friendly and can provide plenty of helpful information about the area. The AirBNB descriptions and photos are accurate. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely return again.

    Paul2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • Christine & Peter are great hosts and they gave us total privacy. We forgot to bring toothpaste and they gave us some toothpaste. The place is right next to beach and you can walk to there.( around 3 mins walk ) !! The shops and restaurants are all walkable. We have had a lovely stay and would love to come back to visit again! By the way the complimentary breakfast is yummy, especially the muesli😊

Romantic Getaway. Seeing it is loving it! The Caboose is a handcrafted replica of an old train carriage, with a private garden. Set on a property with a historic farmhouse, only 5 minutes drive from the beach and Takaka township. Great for both summer and winter with a pot belly making it cosy on the colder nights and an outside bath for a romantic soak under the stars. Your stay at the The Caboose in Golden Bay will hopefully be a special experience that you will remember! Close to Takaka and close to the beaches, so perfect as a base for your holiday or as your base to explore the natural wonders Golden Bay has to offer. Or just stay in The Caboose and ... relax! We do not offer Wifi or television, hoping you will be able to get away from it all, but there are plenty of books and magazines to keep you occupied and a few games. And just to let you know ... we have children, so you might hear or see the odd child in the garden, but they will respect your privacy and the fact that you are on holiday and want to relax. Some of the feedback we were given: - Made to feel very welcome. Easy to relax inside and outside the Caboose. Really enjoyed exploring Golden Bay. Nice combination of Art Trail, natural beauty and good food - Great location and excellent accommodation. The Caboose was beautifully presented and had everything we needed. The perfect place to relax - Great spot for a get away and top location to base ourselves from to explore golden bay and up to farewell spit! Really nice place to stay and the outside bath, shower, hammock and dining area was ideal and made it even more special for us! - Thanks so much for the relaxing refuge. Beautifully quiet, would recommend to anyone who needs some time out - The outside bath is awesome. We'll be back :) Truly one of the best accommodations my wife and I have ever spent time in - after 40 years of traveling. A small space but absolutely magical and meticulously detailed. A true labour of love created by someone with a genius level of originality and inspiration. This little wonder is dripping with soul. After leaving and checking into our next night's accommodation after leaving Takaka, we felt an overwhelming sense of loss - realizing our one night stay there hadn't been nearly long enough. - A very unique, relaxing and private get-away! We loved staying in the Caboose with our 2 year old daughter and will happily recommend it to others. The private backyard with outdoor bath and shower were a highlight, and the welcoming eggs and beer a lovely touch. Thank you, I'm sure we will be back!
Rural outlook over farmlands but close to beach and lots to explore. Golden Bay is New Zealand's most diverse and appealing holiday destination. Imagine a region with endless variety, where golden beaches, alpine valleys and tranquil fishing rivers share a close proximity with the sea. Breathtaking scenery, arts and crafts, sporting activities. There's something for everyone. Golden Bay is nestled into the South Island's north-west corner. A chain of steep and rugged mountains cuts its fertile river plains and valleys from the rest of the island.
  • The caboose was a lovely spot from which to explore Golden Bay! The listing was very accurate. It’s a peaceful, cozy place with very welcoming hosts.

    Lynnie2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay in the Caboose. It’s as cute and cozy as it looks in the photos, but also had all of the amenities we’ve found in much larger apartments/spaces (we cooked a full dinner and breakfast).

  • A must stay spot if you’re in Golden Bay!!! Such a unique space and the hosts Lisa and Peter are so lovely and go above and beyond to make your experience memorable. The caboose is adorable, cozy and well-outfitted with everything you need, and the gardens with the outdoor shower and bath are perfection. Regardless of the rain we loved our time exploring the beaches and parks here, lots of yummy laidback cafes and bars too!

    Kaleigh2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • This place is definitely worth the hype. The job they have done on converting this train is magnificent - it’s incredibly well thought out and beautifully finished. Ultra comfy bed, big / powerful outdoor shower and every kitchen utensil you need for a short or long stay. We had four nights in the train, explored all day / every day and could’ve easily done another week around takaka. Note: if you are planning on kayaking the able Tasman - start from the golden bay side if you want a more picturesque experience without the hoards of people. Would definitely stay at the train again. Thanks Lisa and Otis for a super relaxed, private experience.

Bathroom outside under the sky is fantastic. Also in the garden you got barbecue to use. Lisa and Peter are really friendly host which I can highly recommend and so is thier full of energy dog :)

Our comfortable two bedroom unit is located opposite Patons Rock Reserve, only 200 meters from the beach. The open plan kitchen and lounge is fully self contained. The unit has 2 bedrooms: 1 queen size bed, one set of bunks.
Patons Rock is a small settlement only a 10 min drive from Takaka and central to the attractions of Golden Bay. An ideal place for children to enjoy with a safe beach for swimming. Lovely for taking long walks or fishing off the rocks. Alternatively relax in our big garden under the shade of the plum trees.
Lot's of art galleries and potteries to visit, the famous Mussel Inn is only a few minutes drive away. Abel Tasman Nat. Park and Kahurangi Nat. Park offer lots of different walks/scenery
  • We really enjoyed our stay here, the apartment was just the right size for the 4 of us (2 adults, 2 boys aged 2 & 5). It was clean and the amenities suited us. We loved being close to the beach for an after dinner stroll to. Gabriele is a lovely host as well, very helpful and friendly!

    Julia2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome place, super host! Perfect spot for discovering all Golden Bay. Super quiet, super well located, close to the beach. Gabriele is very friendly and welcoming. We definitely recommend this place !

    Anne-Sophie2019-12-09T00:00:00Z
  • Tidy accommodation close to a beautiful beach. Suitable for 2 people, or a small family. The second bedroom was a bit smaller than expected, but Gabriele gave us linen to use the sofa bed instead. The kitchen / kitchenette space is minimal with a little fridge and two burners only (no oven), we arrived with chicken hoping to cook a roast - luckily Gabriele gave us a slow cooker to use. Despite this I would still recommend this stay. 😊

    Bessie2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • Gabriele’S place was in a lovely location and great for exploring farewell spit and national parks in that area. The accomodation was very clean , comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay. Gabriele was very friendly and helpful with local knowledge of the area

    Peter2019-06-19T00:00:00Z
  • What a treat! Gabriele is such a lovely person and a great host, the unit was perfect for what we needed, and so clean! Patons Rock was is the perfect location, great center point for seeing what the Bay has to offer. We really enjoyed our stay, only wished it was longer.

    Sam2019-04-24T00:00:00Z
  • The thoughtful personal touches fresh flowers, supplies were delightful. The rooms were spotless clean and well equipped. The location close to the beach was very romantic and well placed for Cape Farewell. Sad we couldn't stay longer than our two days.

New comfortable home, with lovely mountain views, set in a private garden with secure parking space, 5 minutes from Takaka town and surrounded by beautiful beaches and walks.
The room has it's own access and private bathroom. It's quiet and clean, with good light and morning sun. Enjoy the dawn chorus. There is a small fridge for your convenience, tea and coffee making facilities. If you come at the right time, there is fresh fruit from the orchard. Wireless WI-Fi is available on request free of charge. Otherwise I prefer to keep it off. If you enjoy natural living, there is also an outside shower.
This area is called "rural-residential". You can't really see the neighbors, but it's only 5 km from Takaka's centre with it's cafes and cinema, and 10 km the other way to the famous Mussel Inn, with their own brews and lively gigs. You can walk to the beach and the river mouth. It's quiet and safe.
  • Wonderful private space to rest and recuperate, Adriana was a wonderful host! Easy and beautiful

    Rose2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • I had a really nice stay at Adriana’s. She was very welcoming and made sure that I had everything I needed. The place is in a really pleasant location, very private and surrounded by trees. It’s very eco friendly with rain water and solar heating as well. Great visit.

  • Great spot to stay in Golden Bay. The location is excellent because it is easy to get to beaches and attractions on both west and east side of the bay. The house is really lovely with nice touches. Adriana told us about the best swimming spots and they were amazing. Really liked the garden and decor.

  • Adriana was great, easy to chat to, lots of tips on the local area and wanted to know we had everything we needed. Her lovely place is private and for us had a laid back, relaxing feeling which was what we needed. A garden area in which we enjoyed eating meals. You have your own entrance and there is both an inside and outside shower.

Te Kakau is a three bedroom house located in Takaka five minutes walk to the Village. All the amenities are close but you feel quiet and rural. We are very happy to negotiate long term stays. Due to covid 19 we are undertaking strict cleaning policies to ensure your stay is worry free. We have put a lot of thought into what guests need to enjoy their stay and feel that the house is well equipped and comfortable. Dogs are welcome
Everything you could need for your stay is supplied. We try to think of everything that will make your stay more comfortable even down to spare reading glasses. There are three bedrooms, one queen, one queen plus single and one with two single beds. There is free wifi, tv and some videos and cds to relax with. Fully operational kitchen and laundry wirh oven, microwave etc. We love dogs so all are welcome there is a "doggy bag" for canine guests. From January 2020 there will also be a permanent caravan adjacent to the house available for hire. It is self contained with seperate bathroom and toilet. Seeps 2, gas cooker and private outdoor area.. Enquire for rates. The back yard is quiet and running beside a stream which is full of wildlife and birdsong in the morning. The back yard runs onto an unfenced stream so may not be suitable for toddlers. All children must be supervised by the creek
We love being so close to everything that Golden Bay has to offer. Its fantastic to wake to the sound of the birdlife and wander down to feed the eels at the bridge on Rose Road. The house is comfortable and warm with a fantastic fire for winter.
  • Excellent location, convenient for a stroll into Takaka. Lovely Riverside setting. Tons of space, comfy beds and very clean.

  • Cute little place right in town! We were able to walk to dinner and breakfast in the morning as well as the most amazing playground for our 3 yo. Tamara was very accommodating and easy to communicate with. She even left us yummy treats and a welcome fruit bowl which was very much appreciated after our long drive. Cute home too with thoughtful touches through. There is a bit of traffic noise as the house is on the main road but it didn’t bother us much.

    Andrea2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • This 3 bedroom house is right downtown, an excellent location. It is truly a home away from home! It was just my friend and I but the house does sleep 7 people. It was clean, very comfortable and a few minutes walk to shops and restaurants. I highly recommend staying here!

    Tania2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • We loved this place! We were traveling with a baby and this place had everything we needed and more. It was great having walking distance to cafés, bars, shops etc (and an awesome yoga studio if you’re into that). It’s still quiet though, with an absolutely lovely garden. Great location for exploring the Golden Bay area (which you should do if in nz). Great hosts also. They’d put out some snacks for us on the evening we arrived, which was very appreciated since we had had a long drive. We met Doug briefly at one point during our stay, and he seemed really nice. We hope to come back one day!

    Johanna2020-02-15T00:00:00Z

Takaka township is a only two minute walk away. There are lots of local attractions to see and do - many within a 5 minute drive. There is so much to do in Golden Bay...you might need to book another night! You’ll love my place because my home is full of charm, colour and quirkiness! It's a 1950's villa with gorgeous rimu floors, cosy furnishings and lots of lovely spots to curl up in the sun! Your furry friends are most welcome - may not be suitable for toddlers due to the front porch
My home is central to all the things you would want to do in Golden Bay and is the perfect balance of convenience, charm, lush and cosy comfort and of course...location, location, location!
Golden Bay is such a lovely colourful and diverse community of talented and passionate people...there is something here for everyone..take time to get to know the locals..the stories some of them can tell! Warning - take some yarns with a grain of salt!
  • Abbey's house is really cosy and comfortable. I really enjoyed staying with her!

  • Funky, warm, friendly, local and inviting! A great place to stay and enjoy the local sights!

    Laura2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay in Abbey's beautiful home! Her place is so stylishly and thoughtfully decorated and tended to - you can tell she has put a lot of love and care into her home and the gardens, which are beautiful and surround the whole house. The location is also great, with the town only a short walk away. Abbey herself is a wonderful host and gave us many great tips and recommendations that helped us make the most of our time in Takaka and the South Island. Another added bonus was Jackson, her friendly pup! Both Abbey and Jackson made us feel right at home. Thanks again for the lovely stay! Marisa & Eike

  • Abbey and her faithful dog Jackson were wonderful hosts! I would definitely recommend a stay at her unique home!

    Rob2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • Abbey's place is filled with a light and warmth and provides an inviting and comfortable ambience, it is tastefully decorated and nicely furnished. Simple and minimalist in design, the house functions well and has plenty of space to relax in sun and shade. Abbey is delightful, charming, kind and helpful and I consider her an exemplary host. Her dog Jackson is a friendly, quiet and cuddly companion. All in all, a great place to stay.

    Willem2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Welcome, house very pleasant to live in and well placed to visit Golden Bay. We spent a week at Abbey who gave us perfect advice on places to visit. Do not hesitate, our only regret is not to have stayed longer.

They were quick to respond to our questions and requests. Definitely would recommend their place to anyone looking for a charming place to stay in Takaka!

  • We were pleasantly surprised to have arrived at Simone & Joe's rustic but comfortable place. We were welcomed with a complimentary bottle of wine which put a smile on our faces. The location was perfect for all we wanted to do in the area. Grocery stores were close by for our shopping needs. The beds were very comfortable. The rooms in the house were very roomy. It was very nice that the toilet was separate from the bathroom since we were 4 people having to share the bathroom. Being able to wash our clothes and then have a large clothesline in the yard was very much appreciated. Thank you to Simone & Joe for sharing this house with us.

  • Tracey's place was an excellent stay for us as we explored the Golden Bay/Abel Tasman area and ventured up to Farewell Spit. The rooms are large and comfortable, and it was incredibly quiet at night. Tracey made us feel welcome with fresh bread on arrival, which I admittedly ate more than my fair share of... A short drive to Takaka with plenty of options for food, it was a great stay.

  • Warm welcome from Tracey when we arrived. She gave us a tour of the Airbnb and recommendations in the area. Loved the idea of the guestbook entries of what past guests have done and enjoyed to help present guests plan their visit. The fresh baked bread was an added touch.

Base Camp sits on 107 hectares of land at the head of the Waikouropupu Valley. This adjoins and is a portal to Kahurangi National park. You are surrounded by native flora and fauna including several cheeky wekas who regularly patrol the area. It’s also a perfect, private place to just rest and relax and enjoy the views up to the mountains and down to the sea.
There's a cabin with a comfortable queen-sized bed and lounging area. An oil column heater keeps this well-insulated space cosy, if things get chilly. Though Base Camp is more attractive in the warmer weather, our cooler weather guests seem to find it comfortable and often extend their stay. The weather can be very chilly, but gloriously fine and sunny, which helps. If you're thinking of booking in the colder months, just be aware of the open air nature of the kitchen and ablution areas. If you're hardy, you'll be fine! The separate ‘open air’ kitchen, dining and ablution areas are connected to the sleep-out by covered decks. Enjoy a bath under the stars on the alfresco deck. The glowworms on a track nearby provide a magical touch. The kitchen is reasonably well-equipped and user friendly and has spring-fed filtered drinking water. We’ll make sure there’s plunger coffee and tea [including some herbal teas] to get you started, but please bring your own milk as we've found that there are just too many preferences to cater for. There's a 20 amp caravan plug amenity which is also suitable for charging EVs.
Using this eco-friendly and unique hideaway as a base, you can explore all that Golden Bay has to offer. Even within the valley there are several opportunities nearby: visit the world renowned Te Waikoropupu springs; hike the Pupu Hydro walkway which starts at the bottom of our driveway; go canyoning down Campbell Creek; explore the Waikoropupu River at the foot of the property and discover rock pools for a quick dip on a hot summer’s day. Base Camp River Track. We have cleared a track to the river that borders the property. Follow it from the uphill end of the wooden bridge. Watch your feet as there can be rata vines growing across the path to trip the unwary. It's a walk of only a few minutes, so make it a leisurely stroll and enjoy the forest immersion experience. There's a small plunge pool at the end. Take great care when rock-hopping as some of the surfaces can be very slippery, especially if it's been raining or if it's been dry for an extended period. After heavy rain when the river is in flood, we suggest just going for a look and not to attempt to ford the river.
  • Wow! Base Camp is fun, quirky and utterly magical. A cosy cabin in the woods. We loved the loo with a view, taking a shower among the trees and dining al fresco! This takes the indoor outdoor flow to the next level. We arrived late in the evening and Hess and Chip thoughtfully put the lights and heating on for a warm welcome. It has all the amenities you could need and the design detail is impressive. We enjoyed the nearby walks and sites, highly recommend.

  • Base Camp was a bush paradise for me. Totally secluded in the forest with just enough space for a sprawling lawn and views to the ocean (make sure your vehicle can go up tracks!) with every luxury you could hope for from an al fresco alpine bath experience, to an amazingly equipped kitchen and a ridiculously comfy bed. I would have stayed forever if I didn’t have so much on my bucket list still to see in New Zealand. If you want a truly unique, peaceful and luxurious stay, this is the place for you! I visited much of the surrounding areas from here as it was conveniently located close enough to Takaka also. The springs near by are a must for a beautiful spot and don’t miss out on hiking in the surrounding hills.

  • Beautiful spot and unique home. Hosts very thoughtful and have thought of everything you could want or need here!

    Bruce2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderful place. Base Camp is amazing - seemingly simple but with everything we could want and more. I’ll never forget my al fresco showers gazing at the forest. The kitchen is beautifully laid out and it was great to have properly sharp knives! My only regret is not booking it for longer but we hope to be back one day...

    Sarah2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing Airbnb, great location and totally private. Loved the fact that it had the kitchen and bathroom separate and just loved the outdoor bath. It was great to sit outside at night under cover and enjoy the sounds of nature. We will be back. A very special place.

    Christine2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • The highlight of our trip. Hess and Chip have created a romantic and relaxing space for those wanting to reconnect with the outdoors. The kitchen came fully equipped with everything needed for nights in and the sleeping area kept things cosy during the rain. The added bonus of an outside bath, combined with hot chocolates and a clear night, made for a magical experience. We love this space and we will be back to visit. Thanks guys.

  • A great place to get away from it all, but close to great walks and not too far from Takaka. Really enjoyed our stay.

Your private, self-contained cottage is a mere forty steps from Pohara Beach, one of Golden Bay's largest and most beautiful beaches. The cosy cottage has a separate bedroom with ensuite and a kitchenette suitable for light cooking only.
Comfy, modern cottage with separate bedroom and living area literally right across the street from the beach. Pohara, Golden Bay, is superb. From Pohara you can explore the entire Bay, including the Abel Tasman National Park. Pohara is eight kilometres from Takaka and is ringed by steep hills. Just around the corner is the Port Tarakohe marina where the mussel boats operate from, and Jacques Cousteau's old boat serves fresh coffee. The deep water Tata Beach is just around the corner, too. It is a summer of swimming, kayaking and boating,
Nestled between Abel Tasman National Park and Kahurangi National Park Golden Bay is far and away one of the most scenic areas in New Zealand with kayaking, tramping, rock climbing, swimming and much, much more. Takaka has recently been declared the sunniest spot in New Zealand. Plan on spending at least 3-4 days at Golden Bay., just to hit the high spots. There is lots to see and do and fewer days will mean missing some stunning geography.
  • Comfortable space, exactly as described. The beach is just 1-min walk away with great views, and a lovely swimming beach just 5-10mins drive away. The neighbourhood is quiet and friendly, with a cafe and shops within walking distance of the house. Try to stay for 3 full days or more, as there is so much to explore! We wish we’d done so!!

  • This is a nice clean place, convenient to Pohara restaurants and a good jump off for day trips to Tata beach and Abel Tasman.

  • What an ideal little beach cabin! Everything you need for a relaxing stay and a perfect location just steps from a gorgeous beach. Dan is a gracious host and shared many suggestions for places to visit in the area, including important tips like knowing how the tide will affect when to go. Fresh ground coffee and orange juice were waiting for us. We really enjoyed Dan’s beautiful photographs on the walls and his humorous selection of reading material. Highly recommend staying here while in Golden Bay.

  • After a whirlwind tour of the north island we wanted to be able to kick back and relax with a home base for local day tripping. We were not disappointed with our little beach side cottage. Daan was welcoming and sent us in the right direction whenever we asked for input. Pohara Beach is the perfect place for exploring the Golden Bay Area and we spent many enjoyable days here. The cottage was well appointed and perfect for our needs.
