In June and July you can see Shakespeare in the Park plays for free. They are some the best productions I have seen in NYC. Lines are ridiculous but try the online lottery for tickets.

You can ride the ferry for free to Staten Island. There is not much to do once you get to the other side but the ride over offers great views of the city and the Statue of Liberty.
