Guidebook for Maui

We recently purchased a place in Maui for our family to enjoy over the years. We're excited to be able to share it with you when we're not able to be there. This is a short list of places we've had the opportunity to experience and feel are worth recommending to our guests.
Captain Ryan is a great tour guide for anyone interested in whale watching or snorkeling outings. His staff is very professional but fun and we saw some incredible whale breaches on our tour. His assistant was a biologist by trade and had a ton of great information on the whale's behaviors and really made the experience unique. We saw a ton of fish while snorkeling at Molokini and turtles at the other stop on the way back. Highly recommended!

Also known as 'Kite Beach', this secluded beach is a mecca for kiteboarders like myself. There are several companies who can be hired for personalized lessons, or just go to watch! The winds generally pick up in the early afternoon, so that's the best time to visit. The park/beach itself is nothing special, and it's located in an industrial part of town, but the colorful kites are a sight to see, especially as the sun starts to set.

This place is no secret and is considered by many to be the top spot to dine on all of Maui. It's a bit of a drive from Kihei, but well worth it if you're celebrating a special occasion. Be sure to call ahead of time and make a reservation!

A short hike in awards you with a marvel of nature... a naturally occurring geyser powered by the ocean's waves. Every few minutes onlookers will be awed as a powerful burst of water shoots up from the rocks. Be careful not to get too close to the blowhole as it does 'erupt' with considerable force

It's definitely on most people's bucket lists when coming to Maui, but this trip is not for the faint of heart. Be sure to check the road conditions before setting out on this all-day adventure as roads can often wash out after storms or heavy rains. The road is narrow and winds among the hills, so be prepared to stop to let oncoming traffic by . There are some really great sights along the way including the Twin Falls, Ho'okipa lookout (where some of the best surfers ride), the Upper Waikani Falls (also called 3 bears), the black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park, the Hana lava tube, Hamoa and Koki beaches, as well as many others. Like I said, plan to spend a day if you do this trip :)

While we love the close proximity to Charles Young beach, there are two other great beaches in walking distance from our unit. Of the three, we really enjoy Kam III for its soft sand and swimmer-friendly waters. It's also the largest of the Kihei beaches and is nearby lots of great shops and restaurants.

This is an incredible spot to watch the sunrise from. Be sure to pack some warm clothes as it is much much colder up here than it is down at sea level. On your drive up be on the lookout for bikers going up and down the road as it is also a popular biking destination. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early to make sure you don't miss the breathtaking colors of a Maui sunrise.

While I haven't had the opportunity to play here myself, I hear that this local course is worth a visit if you're in town to golf. There are many other great courses on the island, but this one is the closest!

This beach is a great place to take a surfing lesson, or just lay back and watch the surfers do their thing. It's just up the street from Maui Vista and is one of the best spots for amateur surfers.

This family-friendly community event is held every month on (you guessed it…) the fourth Friday. There really is something for everyone here, with live music, dancing, out-of-this-world food trucks and stands, and a special Keiki Youth Zone full of kid-centric fun. You’ll also find a large number of local crafts and artwork for sale, so it’s a great place to pick up gifts for folks back home. The festivities begin later in the day, so this is the perfect evening out for the whole family. Best of all, admission is free!

This walk-up spot features outdoor wood-fired grills for some of the best chicken you'll find on-island. It's a great spot to stop after a visit to Kam III beach as shirt & shoes are optional! Super casual and easy on the wallet.
