Note from the Wrens Nest: (Across the street from the condo) The Wren’s Nest was the home of Joel Chandler Harris from 1881 until 1908. It’s believed that the house received its name from the wrens who nested in the mailbox. Built around 1870 as a farmhouse, the home was substantially remodeled and expanded by the Harrises during the 1880s in the Queen Anne Victorian style. It’s a unique example of upper middle class living at the turn of the 20th century. The Wren’s Nest officially opened as a house museum in 1913, with financial support from Andrew Carnegie, President Theodore Roosevelt, and the fundraising efforts of the kids in Atlanta Public Schools. Most of the furnishings in the house belonged to Harris and his family. In 1962, the National Park service designated The Wren’s Nest a National Historic Landmark. Between 1985 and 1992 the Joel Chandler Harris Association restored the interior and exterior, and in 2009 a $200,000 conservation project was completed.

Note from the Hammond House: Nestled on a quiet residential street in Atlanta’s historic West End, Hammonds House Museum is a unique setting to explore the cultural diversity and legacy of artists of African descent. The Museum is the former residence of the late Dr. Otis Thrash Hammonds, a prominent Atlanta physician and a passionate arts patron. Shortly after his death in June 1985, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners under the leadership of Chairman Michael Lomax purchased the house and the collection of 250 artworks which Dr. Hammonds had amassed over the years. The property was purchased with the intention of it becoming the African American research library but the library board passed on the building. Edward S. Spriggs, who had been the director of Studio Museum of Harlem for seven years was now in Fulton County's Public Arts department and was watching the debates about how to use the newly acquired building with great interest. Spriggs submitted a proposal for an African American Museum to the board of commissioners which was adopted. The Hammonds House Galleries, a 501(c)3 organization, opened in 1988. The name was later changed to Hammonds House Museum. Hammonds House Museum boasts a permanent collection of more than 350 works dating from the mid-19th century by artists from America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Highlights of the collection include 18 works by master artist Romare Bearden and the oldest known painting by acclaimed landscape artist Robert S. Duncanson. Benny Andrews, Elizabeth Catlett, Sam Gilliam, Richard Hunt, Jacob Lawrence, P.H. Polk, Hale Woodruff, and James Van Der Zee are among the scores of important regional, national, and international artists represented in the collection. The Museum’s yearly calendar of events includes 4 visual art exhibitions by significant mid-career and established artists, artist talks, panel discussions, workshops, art education for young people, as well as book readings, music concerts and more. For 30 years, Hammonds House Museum has been a mecca for people seeking inspiration, interaction, and intellectual stimulation centered on art of the African Diaspora. We look forward to seeing what the next 30 years will bring.

Note from the Slutty Vegan Team: Slutty Vegan was founded the summer of 2018 by Pinky Cole. Having established roots in the West End community of Atlanta, we have made it our mission to provide quality vegan meals to communities that would have otherwise never had these options. The philosophy here at Slutty Vegan is “VEGANS CAN BE SLUTTY TOO”. We actively seek to dismiss the notion held by many we serve, that vegan food is either too expensive or too bland. With a team of innovative, visionary, and passionate members we make it our goal to make every SLUTTY experience as amazing as the first. Here, we invite our customers for the minutes and sometimes hours they spend in our lines to be a part of our SLUTTY family. We thank the thousands that have been Sluttified, and look forward to sluttifying the rest of you undercover sluts. We are forever thankful.

Note from R. Thomas: We started out as a funky burger joint, inspired by some free-spritied souls from San Fransisco, with non stop breakfast, a kinda healthy air, and a 24 hour heart. "I lost the keys to the place on opening day, so we just stayed open" chuckles R and we were off and running. Come 1990, R was inspired again. We just found a little thing called Gravity Bar, which makes fresh juice for people to order. R just had to have one. So to make room he took all the tables and chairs out of the building. "Wait a minute" I piped up, "Where are the folks going to sit? Thought you gave up on drive-thru windows! Are people just going to sit outside?" Of course! Little did I know the vision that was taking place, as some modest outside seating was transformed into the lush covered-garden patio oasis we are happy to serve our guest under today. Once you start changing things, people take notice. We started offering fresh carrot juice to serve alongside burgers, and new friends came along to help us out. Under the instruction of our consulting chef and nutritionist Donna Gates (author of the Body Ecology Diet), we started to really explore the healing power of food. We decided to expand our horizons and offer a broad variety. "We treat carnivores and vegetarians with equal respect" says R, but it is more than just that. High quality ingredients: cold pressed organic oils for cooking and dressings, fresh produce, home grown herbs from our garden, local organic honey and bee pollen, organic grains, ocean vegetables, free-range chicken, organic range eggs, natural range beef and organic salmon, wild caught tuna, powerful superfoods like kefir and raw cultured vegetables are the cornerstones of a menu that honors everyone's food choices. No matter when you come or wherever you may be in your dining and nutrition path, from our family to yours, welcome to R. Thomas! - James Russel Thomas

Note from Intermezzo: Long before the modern “Coffee Houses” adorned corners all over America, Café Intermezzo embodied the essence of the 300-year-old European coffeehouse. Step into Café Intermezzo, and you are stepping into another time, another place. It’s a vacation, a holiday, an "intermezzo" (intermission) between the busy acts of your life: in musical terms, it’s your rest between allegro and adagio. A wonderful cappuccino, a beautiful pastry, and your getaway or rendezvous is complete. On another visit, you might enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner, or a late-night appetizer with a glass of wine or a cocktail. The Beverage Book offers hundreds of choices. “TourGuides” take you through descriptions of over seventy pastries. The choices are dramatic, and you can partake in choosing every day of the year. Café Intermezzo has been presenting the place, the time, the choices for nearly forty years. It is truly a tradition, complete only with the presence of you!

Note from Cultured South Fermentation Co: With one visit to our first-of-its-kind taproom and retail store, our passion for our products will be obvious. We are centered around health, wellness, food culture, traditions and down-south hospitality. We thrive on bringing you new flavors of fermentation that we cultivate just feet away in our brewery and fermentation kitchen. We are honored to work with local farmers and quality southern ingredients. We take fresh local produce, herbs, and fruits, to create fun fermented goods made just for our community: you. Cultured South Fermentation Company is the creation of brewmaster, Melanie Wade, founder of Atlanta's first and only kombucha company, Golda Kombucha. Wade brews kombucha tea using her Grandma Golda's original recipe and has been since college. With Golda's heirloom culture, Wade expanded her kombucha business across the Southeast, premiering smooth flavor combinations like peach ginger, lavender lemonade and strawberry mint in 2013. Golda Kombucha can now be found in over 100 Kroger and Whole Foods markets. In 2016, Wade got to work growing Cultured South Fermentation Company, Atlanta's first marketplace for healthy, living foods made in the South. To launch a brick-and-mortar tap room, Wade signed on as a tenant at the Lee + White adaptive reuse development in Atlanta’s historic West End. The dynamic warehouse space operates as a kombucha tasting room, brewery, shop, and research and development kitchen. Spawning from the success of Golda Kombucha, Cultured South is the adopted parent of Pure Abundance artisan vegan cheeses which are handmade and sold onsite. The tap room is a home base for the Atlanta community to connect and learn through the natural abundance of Cultured South’s local, probiotic-rich goods. Find the Cultured South Tap Room on the Atlanta BeltLine in the historic West End neighborhood.
