If you’re bringing your own kayak or paddle board, it’s easy to use the small beach next to the castle to launch from. Very safe. D day museum is a really good experience. When the seasonal ferry is operating, you can catch it from here to get to Weymouth.

Getting around

Sea Safety

The nearest place to go sea swimming is Chesil Cove, where the steps lead down onto the beach from the beach huts, just past Quiddles. Elsewhere on Chesil Beach the bank can drop suddenly under the water. Next to Portland Castle (a 10 minute walk from the cottage) is a secluded small beach and slipway which is one of the best places to paddle board or kayak from. It’s safe due to it being in the harbour. Please respect the weather and sea conditions. For beaches with manned lifeguards then visit Weymouth, Poole and Bournemouth.
