It's a great place for children to swim with lots of slides and fun in the water. Children love it although it does tend to get very busy and the entrance fee is rather pricey.

They have recently spent £millions on the development. It's a spectacular creation which strangely gives a great sense of peace about the place. The Wedgwood museum provides an interesting insight into the development of Wedgwood and the Potteries. You can purchase Wedgwood at heavily discounted prices in the factory shop, have a meal in the cafe or enjoy afternoon tea in the tea rooms (this is highly recommended).

A great place to buy Emma Bridgewater pottery at factory priced seconds or first quality in the gift shop. You may also like to purchase unfired pottery and personalise it by painting your own design in the decorating studio (along with a pot of tea from the café). They will then glaze and fire it so you can treasure it for generations to come. This makes a lovely gift or a nice memento from your trip to the Potteries and is a relaxing way to while away a rainy afternoon. I would advise you do it early on in your stay to give them a few days to fire the pottery (so you can pick it up before you leave - they can also post it out to you too). It's located just minutes away from your accommodation and also has a cafe & restaurant if you fancy a coffee and to work on your laptop (they have WiFi). They also offer factory tours which last 45 minutes. Open Mon-Sat 9.30am - 5.30pm and Sunday 10am - 4.00pm. Tel 01782 201328

It's a stunningly beautiful walk around a lake and incredible gardens steeped in history. To get to it - walk through the Trentham shopping village to the centre where the reception/entrance is to the gardens. There is an entrance fee (very pricey) but it's well worth it if you are looking for a peaceful, romantic walk. Great for families too.

It's an absolutely beautiful area of woodland glades, small hills and a stream, ideal for both a quick or long stroll. Interestingly, Charles Darwin spent many hours strolling these woods, contemplating his evolutionary theories whilst he was courting his then to be wife, Emma Wedgwood (niece of Josiah Wedgwood) who lived on the downs. The Upper House is situated on the edge of the downs and has since been converted into a quiet, quintessential old country hotel that offers lovely afternoon tea or a delicious evening meal. They have retained the features of the house with a few of the rooms still as they originally were (creaky floors, wood panelling etc) so you can imagine just how they lived.

A haven of peace and tranquillity, Rudyard's two and a half mile long lake is beautiful with lovely scenery and a pub at the edge of the lake. Shopping

It is the largest town centre of the Potteries with a wide variety of shops for your everyday needs (your typical, city centre formulaic type shops). It has M & S, Boots, Debenhams etc as well as many other kinds of shops, banks and restaurants. The rear of the shopping centre has been newly developed to include a large cinema (cineworld), Nando's, Frankie and Benny's, Pizza Express, Chiquito and Gourmet Burger Kitchen. You may come across the odd zombie but just ignore them and head for Debenhams.

It's a gorgeous mixture of different types of unique shops all located in a Scandinavian type shopping village. There's plenty of nice coffee shops and places to eat too. You can while away a full day here and dogs are allowed in the complex too.

A small retail shopping complex with a large Boots, B & Q, various clothes shops, Next, Morrisons supermarket, Currys, Pets at Home, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Frankie and Benny's, Costa Coffee, Cinema, Bowling. Admittedly, I have quite substantially added to the profits of McDonalds and Pizza Hut here.

It's an incredible, a la carte restaurant in a beautiful setting (so many weddings are held here). The restaurant is set in a large conservatory, surrounded by a lake and the food is exquisite (and I can understand most of the words on the menu). If you are looking for a romantic restaurant with quality food, maybe for a special occasion, I would highly recommend booking here. It's not cheap but worth a visit for a special occasion. The hotel is approximately 22 miles away (30 mins away) straight down the M6 and just off junction 13 (so it's easy to get to).

A super, traditional Thai restaurant with delicious food at very reasonable prices. It is run by a genuinely friendly Thai family (a brother, sister and mother (the chef!)). We often eat there ourselves as it has a relaxing atmosphere and is quality food. It's situated in the next town of Newcastle under Lyme and is about a 10 minute drive from your house (on the upper floor of the complex so do look up to find it when you get there!). It has plenty of parking too. Tel: 01782 715885 1 King St, Newcastle, Staffordshire, ST5 1EN

The Upper House Hotel in Barlaston is a beautiful, historic, country house hotel which used to be the home of Emma Wedgwood, who married Charles Darwin. It has a small, intimate restaurant overlooking beautiful woodlands. The chef there is superb and the meals are second to none but moreover, very good value for what you get. They also offer afternoon tea in the conservatory. There are often weddings held there so do remember to check if there's one being held on the day you plan to go as it tends to lose it's quiet, relaxed atmosphere.
