Santa Monica Pier is kinda touristy but very fun. There's plenty of open beach to lay out and relax. I once rented a bike (there's tons of rental places along the beach) and road down the boardwalk. If you're looking for a gay beach, check out Will Rogers State Beach which is about a mile from the pier.
