Beaches

Tourmaline, and Law Street just a bit further south, are some of San Diego's nicest beaches, and are walkable from the cottage. Just head out the front gate to Chelsea Ave, turn left and then immediate right (Forward St) to Calumet Ave. Pass the grass park, which is one long block to the south, then continue for about 200 yards. Once Calumet curves around (it becomes Sea Ridge Dr), you'll find an ocean overlook - facing south, with steps to the ocean. At the bottom of the steps you'll see rocks for exploring to the right (north). To the left (south) you will see the beginning of miles of sand and beaches. In the case of extreme high tide, you may choose to skip the steps and continue walking up to Chelsea Street, turn right (south) until you reach the boulevard, and keep to your right. Tourmaline Street is a big long steep ramp to the ocean where there are public restrooms and showers.

Windansea is another beautiful beach to the north. It's a lovely 20-25 minute walk. Just head out the front gate and turn right (Chelsea Ave). In a couple of blocks Chelsea becomes Camino de la Costa, SoCal's "Street of Dreams." Just continue to hug the coast with the oceanfront homes to your left for a winding mile and you will arrive. Palomar Street is the southern end of Windansea Beach. Depending on tides, currents and weather patterns, the sand can shift around quite a bit. If you don't see any inviting sand at the south end, keep heading north, past the iconic Windansea shack, to Westbourne St. There is always nice sand there. After the beach, you can walk up Nautilus St to The Shack or Nautilus Tavern for a beer, the Promiscuous Fork if you're a foodie, Rigoberto's for easy Mex, or Valley Farm Market, the local grocery.
