Nasi Lemak Wanjo. Located in Kampung Baru, this humble eatery is famous among locals during breakfast and supper as they operate from early morning until late night. Much like most Nasi Lemak stalls, you will be served a standard plate of santan rice and essential ingredients ikan bilis , boiled egg and cucumber. Feel free to request for more rice or sambal as you will not be charged extra for it. And lastly, you proceed with the side dishes of your choice. Two of the better side dish here are the Sambal Sotong and Fried chicken. The fried chicken had a wonderful smell, moist and tender on the inside. The Sambal Sotong on the other hand is cooked to the right tenderness. The sotong sizes were quite big and the sambal here was quite spicy. Nasi Lemak Wanjo don’t skimp out on the portion of Sotong and the sizes of each sotong was quite big compared to other nasi lemak eateries. The sambal by Nasi Lemak Wanjo is the sweet type but if you are a spicy sambal lover, don’t be put off by that. It tasted absolutely delicious, mildly spicy and paired well with the aromatic santan rice. And if you are yearning for a spicy kick, their sambal sotong is a must to order. The sotong was fresh and tender and we loved how the sotong soaked up the sambal that was cooked in it. Price wise, we wouldn’t call it cheap since it is an authentic Nasi Lemak spot at Kampung Baru. But at least it was reasonable enough as we took 2 side dishes and we feel you get what you paid for. Moreover, it taste absolutely delicious hence we don’t mind the price tag

Considered Malaysia’s ‘national dish’, Nasi Lemak is traditionally a breakfast dish. In translation ‘fatty rice’ may not sound all that appetising but it refers to the rich, creamy coconut milk that is steamed with Pandanus / Screwpine leaves. A number of sources suggested that the best Nasi Lemak was to be had in the Malay enclave of Kampung Baru (an area in the city centre where village elders have resisted big money offers from developers in order to preserve their ‘village lifestyle’). Without a particular place to eat in mind, my process of selection was a simple one: walk up and down the main stretch of Jalan Raja Muda Musa and identify the place that looked the busiest – it would either be the best, or the cheapest… hopefully both. The result of my highly scientific selection method: Nasi Lemak Mak Wanjor (further research tells me that the neighbouring Antarabangsa also comes highly recommended). As well as the fragrant steamed rice, sweet ikan bilis, peanuts, sliced cucumber, hard boiled eggs and a spicy sambal they also offered accompaniments of fried chicken, rendang, cow lungs (paru) and kerang (that’s ‘cockles’ – not a heavy metal magazine) but, taking my lead from the two ladies queuing in front of me, I went for the sambal sotong (squid sambal).

When you are done with KLCC and its noise and traffic, this is a must do. You are in Kampung Baru a settlement which has (up to now) managed to keep the original Malay single family house setting. Wanjo is popular for its Nasi Lemak. The place is a typical open air (with a roof and fans), plastic chair, formica table setting. Menu is pretty simple : you have a plate with rice, egg, cucumber, dried anchovies and sambal and choose what meat you want to add (from the safe chicken to the more adventurous cow lung skewers). Great taste, super cheap price.
