Great for kayaking, snorkeling and diving. The water is calm and ecologically protected, providing a safe home for colorful garibaldi, yellowtail, rays and even leopard sharks. Because the water is protected, surfboards, boogie boards and other floatation devices are not permitted. The beach itself is small, but nearby Scripps Park offers a nice grassy expanse for spreading out. Visually, the cove is a breathtakingly gorgeous gem. Somewhat hidden with alluring curves and caves, it is often cited as the most photographed beach in San Diego. This ocean view's striking beauty simply cannot be overstated. HOWEVER, as picture perfect as this place is, the waves can be brutal. Swim with caution and take any warnings seriously. Parking is available in nearby paid lots, with a few street spots available for the lucky. Swimming and scuba diving are allowed. Lifeguards are staffed year-round from 9:00a.m. to dusk. Beach is accessible by public transportation. This beach has bathroom and shower facilities and picnic areas. No alcohol or glass containers allowed.

A line of nametags on the wall behind the Chino family's rustic farmstand gives a handful of chefs permission to pick up their ready-bagged orders of veggies. Other chefs slip behind the counter; they've earned the next-best right, to pick out their produce and put it on account (Wolfgang Puck was a Chino's fan before it was cool to be a chef). Still others ― new to the San Diego area ― have to stand in line with the North County crowd of Jags and Mercedes parked out front. The draw is one counter full of perfect cabbages and carrots, squashes and beets, peppers and tomatoes, in every color and variety that exist in the world. The black Spanish radishes are shocking, the shiso sprouts puzzling. One has to wonder: Is there enough of a market for shiso leaves, let alone the sprouts? It's not a question the Chinos bother with. In this green land of golf resorts and megatracts, people are willing to stand in line for whatever the Chinos grow on the 50 or so acres backing their stand ― labeled only, THE VEGETABLE SHOP. The Chinos themselves have been leaders in the "eat what's local and seasonal" movement for decades, pressed into prominence when they were introduced to chef Alice Waters (famously, by way of a lug of wax beans) in the late 1970s. Their reputation is so large, in fact, that you can spot "Chino Farm Organic Greens" on the occasional chic (albeit inaccurate) menu in Chicago and New York ― never mind that the Chinos would never let their greens travel as far as Chicago, or that they aren't completely organic. (The Chinos work with a deep respect for the land but leave themselves room for low-impact pest solutions.) Chino's regularly supply a number of chefs and restaurants such as: Chez Panisse George's at the Cove Mister A's Nine-Ten Sushi Ota Mille Fleurs Dolce Pane E Vino Market Del Mar Ken Sushi Workshop Playground 2.0 Whisknladle Hospitality Taka Sushi Chino Family Farm is host to a pop-up pantry and events presented by Good Earth/Great Chefs. Baseball fans rejoice at Petco Park, where you can enjoy the game in sophisticated style in the Western Metal Building lounges, or take in the innings from the Park ball field with your kids. Fun with the family continues as you discover the colorful past of the former Stingaree District at the Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House, explore the whimsical and educational exhibitions at the New Children's Museum, climb aboard the U.S.S. Midway Museum, visit the candy store in Seaport Village or catch the Trolley for a quick ride to Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo. Under the sparkling night sky on a cool California evening, the Gaslamp Quarter transforms into a sophisticated cosmopolitan playground as thousands come out in style for a night of fine dining, craft cocktails, live theatre, music and dancing. Make a reservation at any of the high-profile restaurants featuring celebrity chefs, enjoy a signature cocktail by a crafty mixologist at a rooftop bar, or groove and sizzle on the dance floor at any of the happening nightclubs.

This is the Birthplace of California! Old Town San Diego State Historic Park presents the opportunity to experience the history of early San Diego by providing a connection to the past. Learn about life in the Mexican and early American periods of 1821 to 1872. Even today, life moves more slowly in this part of San Diego, where the hustle and bustle is balanced with history and fiestas. Visitors are offered a glimpse into yesteryear, as converging cultures transformed San Diego from a Mexican pueblo to an American settlement. San Diego became California's first Spanish settlement when a mission and fort were established here in 1769. Later, it passed into the hands of the newly made Mexican government before gaining statehood in the United States after the Mexican-American War. The core of restored original historic buildings from the interpretive period are complemented by reconstructed sites, along with early twentieth century buildings designed in the same mode. Five original adobe buildings are part of the historic park, which include museums, unique retail shops, and several restaurants. The Historic Plaza remains a special place for gatherings and historic activities. Visitors can also experience a working blacksmith shop, enjoy music, see or touch the park's burros, and engage in activities that represent early San Diego.

The roar of a lion from the Panama-California International Exposition in 1915 inspired Dr. Harry Wegeforth to start a zoo in San Diego. Now the 100-acre, world-class Zoo is home to more than 4,000 rare and endangered animals representing more than 800 species and subspecies, and a prominent botanical collection with more than 700,000 exotic plants. Conservation research is conducted here that would be difficult or impossible to achieve in wild settings, for species such as the giant panda, Fiji island iguana, Galapagos tortoise, polar bear, Bornean sun bear, and brown kiwi. RIDES - Some of the most thrilling rides in San Diego inspired by the force and power of the sea. Soar, dive and twist like a ray on Manta®, the all-new roller coaster that only SeaWorld® could create. Take a spin on Shipwreck Rapids®, and take a plunge down Journey to Atlantis® (my fav!). For young adventurers, be sure to join Elmo and his friends at the Sesame Street® Bay of Play® featuring the best in family-friendly rides. SHOWS - Fabulous, family-friendly, live entertainment at SeaWorld® San Diego. Celebrate the sea in our Shamu® show, One Ocean. Plus, don’t miss Pets Rule! ® where dogs dance, cats cavort and birds flock. And, you’ll be sure to laugh out loud at the hilarious antics of Clyde and Seamore in Sea Lions Live. EXHIBITS & INTERACTIONS - Get an up-close and personal look at the incredible variety of marine life at SeaWorld San Diego. Enjoy close-up views of our gregarious penguins as they eat, waddle and play. Surround yourself with, touch and feed gliding rays in a one-of-a-kind grotto. Experience the amazing world of the sea turtle in Turtle Reef. Walk next to fascinating sharks and get to know lots of other amazing animals, too. EXCLUSIVE PREMIER EXPERIENCES - Reservations-only guided tours and as close-as-possible animal encounters. Go behind-the-scenes and get a real insider’s perspective on the animal care and training methods that make SeaWorld an amazing place for animals and people alike. Join SeaWorld's most gracious hosts, as they experience gentle and mysterious beluga whales or feed, touch and hug friendly dolphins. INSIDER TIPS: If you love animals... Meal time is the best time to meet some bat rays and sea lions who you can even feed by hand at Pacific Point and Manta—but only at designated times throughout the day. Stop by in the morning to check the day's schedule, then give yourself some extra time to get a great spot right at the water's edge. Meet an animal trainer in person: It's hard to ask animal trainers about their job when they're focused on getting our killer whales ready for a show. But here's something most guests don't know. Our Dine With Shamu programs are the only time guests get back stage access to our killer whale habitat, where whales and their trainers share an inside look at their remarkable bond and what makes it possible. Reservations are required as seating is limited. See what goes on behind the scenes: Tours like our Animal Spotlight or Penguins Up-Close aren't listed on the park map, so they're easy to miss out on once you're here. An insider's tip? Book online ahead of time, or stop by the Reservation Center just inside the front gate. If you're bringing young kids... Bring a disposable waterproof camera: There's wet, and there's Shamu wet. If you're in the Soak Zone at Shamu stadium, you'll have a lot more fun watching kids' reactions if you don't have to watch out for an expensive camera. A little tip for parents? Pack a poncho—or pick one up at the gift shop. It's a great way to keep yourself and a towel or two dry, and still get in on the fun. Sesame Street Bay of Play: Watch your kids play at Sesame Streets Bay of Play. The three new rides require children under 48 inches to be accompanied by a Supervising Companion (a Supervising Companion is a person over 14 years of age). Hand held infants may not ride these rides. Some of the Play Area elements have no height restrictions, but the ones that do vary according to the individual characteristics of that element. Catch the show before the show: Take your seat for the Sea Lions Live show at least 30 minutes ahead of time. Late-comers miss out on their zany pre-show antics. Once you've worked up an appetite... Beat the crowd: Plan to have lunch during show performances and you'll get ahead of the crowd. Don't skip breakfast: Start your day with a bite to eat from the Seaside Coffee and Bakery, located near the front entrance. Fresh baked goods, including cinnamon rolls, bagels, muffins, and seasonal fresh fruit, paired with an espresso or latte brewed with Starbucks coffee will get your day started right. A few last tips from those in the know... Choose your seats wisely: You will get drenched if you sit in the front seat of Journey to Atlantis—and we mean drenched. Beat the heat: Temperatures can get quite high—especially in the middle of the day. Plan to take in these "cool places" when the thermometer rises: Wild Arctic, Penguin Encounter, Turtle Reef, Shark Encounter or any one of three Aquariums. Nothing in San Diego like the SeaWorld Firework Show! Best places to experience the sights and sounds are in Shamu Stadium, along the bay near Mission Bay Theater, and at the park entrance. The 2016 Firework Show start times can be 8:50 p.m., 9:50 p.m., or 9:30 p.m., so it's best to check the website or with a staff member when you arrive.

Our favorite BeachPark in Del Mar because it has so much to offer! Powerhouse and Seagrove Parks, are located just above the 15th Street surf break; providing a great spot to picnic with friends and family. The Powerhouse Park also features a barefoot friendly, dog free "tot lot," where kids can play on swings, slides, and climb. Awesome gigantic grassy area if you get tired of the sand.

North San Diego County (where The Guest House is located) offers some of the best local running, paddling, fishing, and diving in the area. Local runs and walks include the beach, coastal bluffs, Torrey Pines State Park, and the trails through the backside of Del Mar in Crest Canyon. All areas provide a unique vantage point to enjoy wildlife and the natural surroundings. On flat surf days, many surfers have found alternate avenues of enjoying the ocean via paddling and free-diving in our local waters. With an abundant local fish population and thriving Giant Sea Kelp forest, both activities are prime Southern California spots for these activities. Two other unique opportunities to explore are Scripps Bluff Preserve and the newly restored San Dieguito River Lagoon. Both spots are located at the northern end of Del Mar and offer extraordinary views of the San Diego coastline, native plants, shorebirds, and other wildlife. Additionally, great training opportunities in the area include running the stairs up to the reserve and the trail out to the Lagoon.
