  • Very happy with our stay to visit family locally and for them to come to us. Fully equipped to prepare a meal for 8; everything you need plus added extras like salt, pepper, sugar, tea and coffee. Loved having three bathrooms too. Big airy feel to the place and Marian was delightful. Enjoyed our stay and would recommend to others

    Julie2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Marian and John are so amazing! Their house was spectacular! It was very spacious and had everything we needed! It was such an amazing central location for what we had planned to do. Waking up to cows across the street was so lovely! We even got a visit from the neighbors dog a few times who was such a little cutie! It was great to have the washer and dryer in the house so we were able to pack light and rewash our clothes to wear again! We bought food at the SuperValu in town and made breakfast almost every morning which was great if you plan on trying to save money! We made fires in the amazing living room a few times as well which heated the house up tremendously! Definitely go to Flynn’s in town if you stay here and get the Penne Chicken dinner and have a Rockshore Lager! It was delicious! There are so many castles that are within about an hour or less circumference for the house! We were able to visit many of them (some of which were closed due to it being off season - we came in December) but they were still stunning sights! Definitely go check out Sean’s Bar in Athlone, the oldest bar in Ireland, which is about a 40 minute drive from the house! Make sure to say hi to Timmy the bartender! We highly recommend this place! Thank you again for your hospitality and kindness while we were in your beautiful country! -Ashley and Daniel , USA

I would recommend their cottage as a great stay with access to many attractions within a short drive. And make sure you spend a few evenings in the jj Hough singing pub in Banagher. Great music and company.

Check in was very easy with Colin providing detailed instructions and directions. The apartment was spotless and exactly as advertised with a bottle of water and fresh towels on the bed. The apartment is in a great location less than 5 minutes walk from the main square with lots of great bars, cafes and restaurants. It's also right beside Birr Castle which is a great place to visit while you're in town. If I was going to Birr again I wouldn't hesitate to book in with Colin again.

  • Great place and location. Only issue was could not get oven working. Need instructions for that. Also a tumble drier would be a great addition. Other than that, it was great.

  • Fiona's place is a little hidden gem located in a perfect position in Birr. Her charming cottage is a stones throw from everything the town has to offer yet still conveniently tucked away from the main square and high street. We booked Fiona's place as a base for a long weekend as we were attending a wedding at Kinnitty Castle. Fiona met us upon arrival, her home was presented in great condition, beautifully styled and above all, it was very clean and tidy. She was an excellent host full of recommendations and replied to any queries straight away.

  • Really nice and very homely. Well located with easy parking outside. Super host. Very helpful in every way. Thank you Fiona.

  • The perfect spot to escape the rush of city life. So peaceful. The hosts were beyond amazing and helpful. Home feels like a visit to your home from home. Lovely and warm in winter. And what a sky beautiful big sky full. I wish we had a telescope. It is a farm experience to stay here but it was amazing.

  • Mary’s place was very spacious, we was always available to us and had plenty of recommendations of thing and places to go. I will recommend her place very much to anyone. Thanks Mary for everything

  • The house has just everything you will need for a nice stay in the Irish countryside. You will feel right at home. On top of that the place was sparkling clean. Would highly recommend!

    Pavel2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The house is big with lots of outside space and the local area is beautiful, especially ‘Victoria Lock’ which is about a 40 min walk away on country lanes. A haven of rest.

    Jana2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • A cottage where life is good and where you feel welcome! An inratable address. When we arrived, our hosts had prepared the house in the most delicate of ways: some food (scones and tartlets, milk in the fridge, some basics in the cabinets) and a good fire in the fireplace. What we put in the mood right away. The rooms are spacious and the beds are very comfortable. The house is located in the middle of nowhere (although 4 minutes drive from the center of the village where there are all kinds of amenities) and it's nice to enjoy the silence. A short visit of the hostess to get to know each other (a visit also of her little dog just as charming) has convinced us: these guests are pearls and they like to receive. A big thank you to them and an address to keep preciously.

  • Mary's place was ideally located, we had our privacy, but at the same time, we were close to the action in town.

    Ann2019-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • Mary and Connie's cottage is very spacious, homey, and impeccably clean on a nicely kept property. They live adjacent and are available if needs or questions arise. I give the cottage an A+++

    Stephen2019-07-02T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay was for 1 month, woodview cottage was an outstanding place to stay. Mary and Connie were such gracious hosts and the house was exactly what we needed. Every need was taken care of and we felt at home immediately. It was a quite and tranquil environment. The kids loved the play area and were out there almost every day. We would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a quite laid back location with great hosts!

  • We stayed at Margaret's place for 18 days and it was absolutely lovely! The house is right in the middle of the Irish countryside, so we woke up to a view of rolling green hills, grazing cows and expansive skies every day (luckily, we had some great sunny weather during our trip). On clear nights, we could see just about every star in the sky! Keep in mind that this is way out in the country, so the Wi-Fi connectivity was sometimes disrupted and there were occasional water issues (early morning water shutdowns or the hot water ran out), but otherwise, the space was cozy, comfy and had adequate amenities. One of my favourite things was the nice little black faux fire heater in the living room! You can expect a peaceful, quiet and relaxing stay here. The little town of Terryglass is a short drive away where we hung out at Paddy's Bar and the Derg Inn. And for groceries we drove to the town of Portumna. There were no issues in communicating with our host. Margaret always replied very quickly and informatively and was very willing to offer tips and places to go to. In addition to Margaret herself, Margaret's husband and son were really helpful in ensuring that we were okay, comfortable and enjoying our stay. Her son in particular was awesome in recommending things and offering suggestions, as well as helping us when we got a flat tire and looked into fixing the toilet when we first checked in. And her husband was very hands-on in explaining how to use the heating system. In short, someone was always around if we needed anything. There's someone else that deserves special mention, and that's their friendly little dog, Miss Minnie. While patrolling the premises, she always made a point to come over and say hello! We created some wonderful and priceless memories during our stay at Margaret's place and we highly recommend it!

  • Just great people, very nice apartment. Just great.

    Udo2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret was an amazing host. She was there to greet us and give us helpful local tips. The amenities provided were great, especially the fresh baked bread. We had a very clean and comfortable stay.

    Sarah2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • We didn't have a good timing and unfortunately we didn't meet Margaret. But her instructions for the check in were very good. We had our own small home in Ireland. There's a private entrance and a kitchen with all things you need for cooking by yourself. It was the best of four homes while our holidays in Ireland :)

    Eva2019-07-09T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret is a splendid hostess with a charming home, spotlessly clean and well equipped. We would strongly suggest it for anyone visiting that part of Ireland.

  • Its a verry cozy place in a silent area, margaret was also verry kind and always helpful. Would definately recommend her! Thanks a lot.

    Katja2019-05-06T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderful place to stay. Beautiful views, lovely thoughtful touches, quiet and peaceful surroundings with so much to do and places to explore and to visit and to relax. Margaret is also super friendly and helpful. The home has all the amenities required to make the stay really comfortable. They also have a really cute and friendly Jack Russell to give it a very homely feel. We really hope to have the opportunity to stay there again.

    Bryan2019-04-28T00:00:00Z
  • I hunkered down at Margaret's place to do some research and writing and a little exploring in the area. The place is great - a large one-bedroom suite with everything you need to be comfortable. The location is central with easy drives to both coasts and to the south. You will love the views of rolling green hills surrounding the beautifully-kept property. I cannot say enough about the hospitality offered by Margaret and Harry. They are warm, welcoming, and lots of fun. They had me over for a lovely meal before I left. I enjoyed myself very much and learned a lot about Ireland. You will be nearby a cute little village named Terryglass that has two great pubs and a town named Portumna where you can buy whatever you might need. One of my best Airbnb experiences!

  • Wow! What an experience we had at Deirdre's place. I hope you are ready for one of the most hospitable family in the world! From the moment we walked in, Deidre and her family made us feel welcomed and like we were a part of her own family. The wealth of knowledge about places to go and see was very helpful for first time visitors to Birr. I only wish that we had more time to stay with Deirdre and her family. Also, I hope you love dogs. Rocco will love you and make you feel wanted as well. The room was perfect with your own bathroom. Seriously, whether you're just passing through on your way to Galway or Dublin, take a detour and stay with Deirdre, you will not regret it. We are looking forward to our next stay!

Built in 1820, our stately home is the former rectory for Loughkeen Church. Stay with us at Loughkeen and enjoy total tranquility within a unique ambiance and warm, country hospitality. The historic town of Birr with its Castle and world-renowned telescope are less than 10 mins away. Surrounded my rolling green fields, the Slieve Bloom mountains, Lough Boora and various bog walks are all close by, while Lough Derg is 20 minutes away for those who like fishing, sailing and watersports.
We have 3 bedrooms available (including a luxurious four-poster bed!) sleeping a total of 6 people. As the house dates to 1820, there are no ensuites but there is a toilet on the first floor with a shower room on the ground floor. Bursting with character, each room has a personality of its own with many pieces of fine antique furniture, rare memorabilia and delicate trinkets on display. Please bear in mind as the house is around 200 years old, it doesn't quite have the same amount of insulation as modern houses (!) but each bed has an electric blanket so you'll be toasty while you sleep. We have a large array of animal friends living on the grounds with us; 6 Irish draught horses, 5 dogs, 4 breeds of poultry including Jemina the Indian runner duck who thinks she's a hen, 3 guinea pigs (our eco-friendly lawnmowers), a pond full of goldfish and a resident barn owl! Just ask us if you'd like to help feed our feathered friends and help gather the free-range eggs just in time for breakfast!
We are located in the middle of rural Ireland, as such Tim will gladly give tours of the local peat bog Clohaskin. A unique site for native Irish flora and the last glimpse of one of Ireland's vanishing boglands. We are 15 minutes from Leap Castle, the most haunted castle in Ireland where the owner Seán gives lively guided tours. Lough Boora Discovery Park is nearby; a location for all kinds of outdoor activities such as cycling, fishing and bird-watching and walking trails of varying lengths.
  • Its hard to describe such an amazing experience with Tim. We felt transported back in time and close to nature interacting with the horses and gazing out on the fields from our castle-like accommodations. Each morning we were greeted with a full breakfast in front of a fire, and each evening a fire in the living room. Mostly, we appreciated Tims warm welcome, attentiveness, and down to earth humor. Although we met Hazel only briefly upon her return from a trip, she is as friendly and accommodating and we look forward to returning to this haven and spending time with our new friends!

    Kate2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • A unique stay in every way. Tim and Hazel are very kind people who welcomed us as friends. We will remember for a long time this evening shared with them in the living room around a peat fire. Thanks again ! Catherine & Patrick.

  • This really is a very special place to stay. Go with time to relax and to appreciate both the house and the wonderful hosts. We certainly plan to visit again.

    NeilCath2019-08-03T00:00:00Z
  • I had a wonderful visit with Tim and Hazel, I felt like a true guest in their home. I arrived in the evening and they lit a fire for me downstairs where we chatted for ages. My room had a four poster bed and was very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and I enjoyed more conversation about the history of the house and local area and much more besides. My night at Loughkeen was a real highlight of a long weekend break in the west. Thank you both!

    Jonathan2019-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • A true Irish welcome and experience. Tim and Hazel are the perfect hosts!

    E2019-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • Stop looking: this is Ireland’s finest B&B. We are AirBnB hosts ourselves, and so we know a special experience when we see one. The home is near Birr and its surrounds, yet is remote enough to truly relax and get away from it all. From the moment we turned up the tree-lined drive and the stately former rectory came into view, we were enchanted. Inside it is packed with history, beautiful furnishings and unique artifacts that tell the story of the house, their family, and to a degree, Ireland itself. But as stunning and antique-filled the home is, it is just a place: what made this stay so special was the people. Tim and Hazel are perfect ambassadors for AirBnB: they are friendly, gracious, inviting, warm and open. Their hospitality was unmatched. We wanted for nothing during our stay; they shared great tips on dining and attractions, we were encouraged to explore the house and farm, (seeing their magnificent horses was a real treat for the kids), they entertained us with good wine and great conversation well into the night, and the next morning provided the finest breakfast we’ve ever had the pleasure to enjoy. We came away knowing we’d include a stay with our new friends Hazel and Tim in every future trip to the area, if they have room for us. You should do the same.

    Dana & Guy2019-07-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderful place to enjoy true Irish hospitality! The house is a treasure chest, full of wonderful and interesting things! A new treasure around every corner and Tim is a marvelous host with extensive knowledge of the area! Do yourself a favor and stay at this charming house!

The nearby town of Roscrea boasts many attractions and activities including the 13th century Roscrea Castle, 15th century Franciscan Abbey, the Round Tower, 18-hole golf course and a leisure centre, as well as Ireland’s first gravity-fed mountain bike park catering for all abilities. • Excellent host and charming property.

  • The Dairy is lovely, very stylish and at the same time lovely and cozy. The outlook is also beautiful. The dogs are friendly and you will hear the occasional farm yard animal which is a nice touch. Collette and Ronan are brilliant hosts and had provided a lovely hamper as we stayed over Christmas and the fire was lit as we arrived. I couldn't recommend Collette's place highly enough! Also the Fresh Eggs laid on the property make the perfect poached eggs!

  • The Creamery is a wonderful little hideaway retreat.. On arrival you're greeted by the three beautiful dogs who were wonderful company throughout the stay! Colette is an accomplished and welcoming host who also enjoys meeting new people. The accommodation itself is far more spacious than I'd imagined and very well laid out. Wifi is there now too so an added bonus to those who may need such.. The main guest bed is wonderfully comfortable with lovely linen and blanket / throw.. The setting is lovely, tucked discreetly away from the hosts beautuful residence... Look forward to returning one day ..

  • Staying at the Creamery was a delight! Colette was a fantastic host! She had fruit, milk & free range eggs waiting for us, so we didnt have to worry about breakfast for the next morning, which meant we could relax instantly. The creamery was perfect, cosy, warm & had all we needed. We had a wonderful day trip to Galway which was only 1hr 20mins away. The following day we stayed local and explored the Slieve Bloom Mountains & Kinnitty Castle. The Creamery is the perfect spot to explore Irelands west coast from. Thank you Colette, we will be back!!

    Irene2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • The Old Grainstore and its host is a place you would keep secret. But Colette and family deserve a lot of guests. The Midlands are called "Irelands secret". And we now do understand why!! We couldn't imagine a better place to stay to discover the wonderful Midlands. If you wish by bicycle with roadtips from Colettes husband Ronan. The house is marvellous and very tastful!

    Anthonie2019-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect stay! Everything was as described and in perfect condition/style. The property is absolutely gorgeous-- couldn't have asked for a better spot to spend a few days as home base while visiting family in Birr. We will definitely be back!

  • Really an unbelievable place to stay, and an experience unlike any other. I've been travelling a lot since October, and this has been my favourite place. Irene and David are amazingly kind, thoughtful and intelligent, and I really learned so much. Everyone should have the opportunity to stay here. The house is located on a nature preserve, and walking around feels like being in the wild. Everyone I met was wonderful. Truly an amazing experience.

  • Mary and Matt are both wonderful hosts and their home is a great place to stay if you’re visiting Ballinasloe. Mary was incredibly accommodating, and even offered to pick me up at the train station or drive me into town if need be! The house is clean, quiet, and peaceful, and the room has everything you might need. Breakfast was quite lovely as well! The entire experience was fantastic and I would recommend staying here if visiting Ballinasloe - though do mind it is a bit on the outskirts of town and a short drive into the main streets. Overall, highly recommend!

    Emily2018-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • Mary & Matt were very attentive. It's a very pleasant place to stay, clean & homely. Breakfast very good well cooked. Mary brought us to our wedding in a nearby hotel. They are a lovely friendly couple who go above & beyond. Thankyou for a lovely stay.

    Anita2018-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely hostess.

    Donna2018-04-15T00:00:00Z
  • Gave 5 stars but not in position to accurately review the accommodation. There was a glitch on the app or something, gave me directions to a place many miles away from Ballinasloe. Tried calling the number provided a few times with no reply; likely a glitch giving me the wrong number as well. I am in the process of resolving the issue with air bnb. Request for refund directly from the host was denied, as in fairness they didn't do anything wrong either. Ballinasloe is a nice enough town, there's a horse fair in the fall. If the accommodation is within walking distance from the hospital than it would be close enough to all the points of interest.

  • Fiona's place is great!! The ensuite room is airy and spacious. It has a comfortable queen bed and plenty of space for luggage. She provided a simple breakfast and directions and suggestions for what to do while in the Midlands. She was very accommodating at check-in and was lovely throughout my stay. Her home is in the country but still only a 30 minute walk to central Birr. I enjoyed sitting outside in the evening and listening to the neighbouring cows. Such a restful place.

We promise to do our best to provide an authentic ‘Irish’ welcome during your stay in our home, an old farmhouse on an organic smallholding here in Tipperary. There's nothing quite like our organic breakfast to set you up for a day of touring. We are always here, so we can give you the ‘local’ insight to our beautiful neighbourhood. A peaceful night’s sleep is guaranteed, and if you opt to join us for dinner, it will be prepared with great homecooked organic food mostly grown here.
So many of our guests have arrived as strangers and left as friends.... we hope you will feel the same after your visit to our home. We look forward to welcoming you to our oasis in the Irish countryside. Peace and quiet is guaranteed, away from hustle and bustle. This is the place to come to sit back, relax and watch the grass grow, or admire the beautiful night skies with no light pollution to spoil the view. Our home is an old farmhouse which we have extended and renovated over our time here…. indeed, there is still lots of work to be done, particularly outside. We are based in the very North of County Tipperary in rural Ireland. Each room has a dual aspect looking out over green fields with grazing cattle or sheep. A warm welcome and a peaceful night’s sleep is guaranteed. Your breakfast while you stay at Oldfarm will always consist of organic home produce - our own granola, fresh eggs from our hens, sausages and bacon - all of course, subject to availability. Homemade organic bread, scones, jams and chutneys are also included. Breakfast is served between 8 - 10 am, and is always prepared fresh and to order. If you choose to stay with us you are within easy reach of so many of the wonderful attractions our country has to offer. There are the popular destinations - Birr Castle, Rock of Cashel, Kilkenny City, Galway City, Cliffs of Moher, Limerick City - all within an hour or two of our home. If you want to take a break from driving there are lots of hidden gems right here in the Midlands that are so worth checking out - Fancroft Mill and Gardens, Bellefield House, Lough Boora Parklands, Irish Workhouse Centre and Portumna Castle and Forest. Lough Derg, Ireland’s biggest lake is just minutes from us, and the pretty villages along its shoreline are worth exploring. Definitely enough to amuse and entertain for a couple of days…. have a look through our ‘guidebook’. We are also blessed to have great golf clubs and horse-riding facilities in our area. Our neighbour, Bobby, is a gillie. Should your interests involve fishing or shooting, Bobby is your man. If hill walking is what you like to do, we are just 20 minutes drive from the Slieve Bloom Mountains which offer walks of many different grades. We also have some very talented crafting neighbours who offer classes in crochet, lampshade making, and furniture restoration. We are as self-sufficient, and sustainable, as possible. We grow all of our own fruit and vegetables organically. We can produce dinner from ingredients we have grown here on our smallholding. Sometimes though we do have to subsidise it with food from other sources - but again we will shop from local organic producers. As we are based in quite a rural area we offer the option of an evening meal, at an additional cost of €30.00 per person (2 courses). We grow most of our own food so you are guaranteed quality and deliciousness! Let us know if you would like to avail of this option. We can cater for most dietary requirements - vegetarian, keto, paleo... just let us know in advance. We are wine drinkers and offer a small selection of wine at cost price, or if you'd prefer to bring your own that's fine too! We have quite a repertoire of dishes from traditional Irish/European fare to Indian dishes that we offer guests - Alfie’s (almost famous) pork burgers, Margaret’s sausage casseroles or her Pork Larb. We can also cater for vegetarians and Alfie does some pretty stunning vegetarian pizzas among other dishes. If animals are your thing, you're in luck. We share our smallholding with a couple of dogs and a cat, hens, chickens, ducks, turkeys and rare breed Saddleback pigs and Zwartbles lambs. You're welcome to help out, and your safety is always our primary concern. If you'd like to bring your dog along, please just ask us. We would ask that they are used to hens and ducks (our birds roam freely on the property) and also that they have up to date vaccinations - both for your dog's safety and ours. We also run courses here at Oldfarm - pig rearing and bread making. The pig-rearing course is a day long course where we share our knowledge of keeping pigs in as natural a way as possible. Our bread making course is based on an Irish Soda Bread recipe - used three different ways - during the 4 hour course you will learn to make a traditional soda bread, griddle bread and a focaccia. Bread making course can be arranged during your stay (€30). Some points to note: Unfortunately there is no public transport, so your own transport is essential. There is lots of safe parking space on the property. This is an old house - the stairs are steep for anyone with mobility issues or those with young children. About us: Former Dublin city dwellers, we came to North Tipperary almost fourteen years ago. We found this lovely rural community, who welcomed us with open arms. Our home needed a lot of work when we arrived (and indeed it's still a work in progress) but we've restored and refurbished over the years. We now run our free-range pork business from home, selling our delicious pork directly to the customer. (website hidden) We love it, and we think you will too. You can read about our life (and see some of our recipes) via our blog ayearinredwood or if you're into free-range pigs, check out our website : Oldfarm We look forward to welcoming you to our authentic Irish home.
Our neighbourhood is a rural farming area. And, of course, you are most welcome to watch (or help) with pigs and lambs :)
  • Margaret and Alfie are superior hosts and we cannot recommend staying at Oldfarm highly enough. The accommodation is comfortable, clean, in beautiful surroundings, with great walking/hiking possibilities and lovely towns nearby. Beyond that, staying with them feels like being at home away from home. The breakfasts are delicious (ask for the omelette for breakfast!) and if you have the time, take them up on their dinner offer. You will not regret it.

    Katharine2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • If you want to enjoy the best breakfast in the area, this is the place to stay. Home made sausages, bacon and fresh eggs. A cup of hot coffee. Views for miles from the kitchen table - bliss. A comfy bed, nature all around you and Alfie and Margaret's hospitality complete the experience. And I haven’t even started describing the delicious dinner they offer and cook with home grown ingredients and fitted to your wishes!

    Florian2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • Alfie & Margaret were perfect hosts. Cup of tea and a chat on arrival. The house is very well appointed and in a beautiful setting. Breakfast, with all home-grown ingredients, was delicious. Birr promotes its Georgian heritage as a designated Irish heritage town. The town is known for Birr castle and its gardens. The annual Birr Vintage Week and Arts Festival takes place in the town in August. The festival includes a variety of events over the week long period including the vintage parade, period markets, music & theatre. The Irish Hot Air Balloon Festival takes place in September from the grounds at Birr Castle. The Irish Game and Country Fair takes place in Birr Castle at the end of August and provides a huge range of entertaining and educational activities, displays and attractions over the weekend. Birr Theatre and Arts Centre is an important cultural and social amenity for the town and has hosted such acts as Mundy, Jack L, Pat Short, Des Bishop and many local and national theatre groups. More information can be found here: (URL HIDDEN) Portumna is situated 15km to our west, in County Galway. In July the Portumna Dancing Festival runs for three days with headliners MIke Denver, Jimmy Buckley and Big Generator. The Shorelines Arts Festival takes place in late September, a showcase of local, national, and international talent which takes place over four days. Portumna Forest Park spans almost 1,500 acres and has several walking tralis through the woods and along the lakeside. There are also bike friendly trails running throughout the forest.
  • A beautiful and remote farm in the nature. The room is spacious and very nicely prepared and Lorraine and her family are really perfect hosts - friendly and helpful.

  • Ireland is full of hidden gems to stay and Lorraine's country retreat is soberly one of them. If you want a comfortable retreat with excellent hospitality and warm welcome, then look no further.

    Colm2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed at Lorraine’s place for six nights. As depicted by the photo, the room is really spacious and full of natural light. It has two huge windows with views across the fields, which made for a sense of peace and tranquility. The bed was comfortable and there was a generous supply of towels, bedclothes, tea-making stuff, etc. Lorraine is a friendly, chatty, caring and considerate host - always one step ahead with anticipating a guest’s needs. Right from the beginning, communications with her were quick, easy and straightforward. She went over and above to help me while I was staying there - giving me lifts, catering for my dietary needs, checking on bus and train timetables, telling me about local attractions, and even on my last night taking me out to hear some great Irish music at a pub in nearby town. (This was in Banagher - make sure you go there if you’re in the area.) I can also recommend the nearby town of Birr - a vibrant and pretty town whose castle has extensive and impressive grounds. It is noted on the site that this is a family-run operation with two young children, but really, i never heard any evidence of this - once in my room, I found it a haven of tranquility. So, I would recommend this place if you’re wanting an escape from the hustle and bustle. Also, if you’re travelling by car, it’s a good central location for exploring the area.

  • I stayed in Gurteen House for one night. It is a traditional farmhouse in a quiet rural area. I got a great warm welcome from Lorraine and Tom. They truly are superhosts My room was warm, clean and spacious with tea/coffee making facilities and my bed was also clean and very comfy. I would have no problem recommending this property to anybody and would gladly stay here again

  • Fantastic hosts, made me feel very welcome, couldn’t have been any better. Location ideal with some beautiful towns within few minutes drive away.

  • Higly recommended! Lorraine has been a fantastic host. Not only for the way her and her husband welcomed me , made me feel at home but also for the help I got as I had a few issues with my account. She called me and she helped me a lot. If I had to come back to Portumna, I wouldn't hesitate in booking her place again. Good position, very spacious bedroom( very comfy bed!!) and lovely breakfast. If you are not a 'local' like me, in Lorraine's house you can experience the typical irish welcoming atmosphere which makes this country so fascinating and warm .

Had a breakfast of muesli. fresh fruit, and soda bread with tea. Could have had toast also. I had a kettle in my room with tea coffee and milk and two cakes provided. The broadband was fast and effective. Nice wide hallway and room was on the ground floor. Happily recommend guests book here if they are in the area or as a base to see the local area. She also has a wonderful garden and view.

We had a beautiful view of her amazing garden. We stayed with Maggie as we were going to a wedding in Coolbawn Quay. She was so thoughtful, she dropped us to the venue. I would go back to Maggie's again just to relax and take in the beautiful garden! Thank you Maggie 😊

  • Lovely rooms and a beautiful garden - Maggie kindly gave us some poppy seeds to take home for our garden. The house is in a quaint village and it's worth the short walk to the river where you can sit and just chill. My bed was super comfy and the shower was perfect. I appreciated the late check-out as I'm not an early riser. Maggie is a great host and very kind. Would stay here again for sure!

    Teresa2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I stayed with Maggie while attending a wedding at Coolbawn Quay. Maggie was super friendly and is a very attentive and welcoming host. What we didn't expect from her was lovely home made bread, scones and sausage rolls at breakfast and a lovely touch of a cream egg at breakfast on Easter Sunday! Maggie was full of great info for the surrounding area to help fill our time. Maggie's home was perfectly places for a wedding at Coolbawn Quay which is just under a 10 minute drive away. We would defiantly be back if ever in the area!

  • This is a really lovely little farm in the middle of nowhere ;-) If you are looking for some quiet place amid the beautiful landscape in the very heard of Ireland, this is definitly THE spot. Perfect for daytrips in every direction. Ideal for families with children, lots of space for playing ball and green meadows for running around. Our small one instandly fell in love with the little white dog, while the big one really loved the three horses on the farm. Sean and Rosaleen were entirely helpful in giving us tipps for places of interest, playgrounds, etc... We were even allowed to pick up some vegetables from the small herb garden. So overall we totally recommend that little pearl of an accommodation to everyone who wants to explore the Emerald Isle or just need some really nice place to relax!

Visitors staying here have a discounted entry and strolling around the gardens, eases frayed minds from busy times, And the Historic Science Centre astonishes. For those who need shopping, there are good places for gifts and fine clothing, as well as many good cafés for eating and pubs for imbibing, so Birr is well worth taking time to linger longer in. This B&B has been open for around 18 years and over those years, Irish and multi-national tourists, writers, poets, playwrights, storytellers and musicians, mountaineers and more have stayed at Brendan House (or 'The Flag House' as it has been nicknamed). All have greatly enjoyed their visits. Here is serenity behind the front door, though within short paces from the centre of happenings in this historic town. Lots of lovely touches in this arty home: antiques and art with stories; books on myriad topics; spring water and chocolate in the rooms and a silver tray in the tented corridor for making cups of herbal or oriental tea, at any time. Sit in a wing chair by the drawing room fire for the welcoming drink. Glossy magazines on architecture, design, art and country sports and a few board games too, from chess to Scrabble. No television but free WiFi, and a good selection of DVDs from blockbusters to some foreign and art films. In the morning, no need to rush to get dressed for the dining room. Dress up in one of the vintage dressing gowns and Moroccan slippers, for the elegantly presented, simple breakfast is brought to the rooms. It can include wholesome cereals with fresh fruits, local organic milk, fresh croissants or wholewheat bread from the bakery (two minutes from the front door). See below for 'the full Brendan House Breakfast Experience.' On request the night before, the local paper or a national daily paper can also be brought with the breakfast tray. Historical notes: Brendan House or 'The Flag House', is named for the Prayer Flags across its facade. Uncertain of its exact date, it may once have been two 17th century houses which were then converted to one, of Georgian style. As its original, elegant windows pre-date 1815, we can but guess at its venerable age. The original lane was widened around 1817 - no doubt demolishing homes in the process - to give access from the main street and Market Square to then then newly built Catholic Church. (Both the Catholic and Protestant churches are cathedral-like in their presences and architecture.) The part of the street near the church is known as 'Chapel Lane' and the section near Market Square is Saint Brendan Street. Yet there has been no road sign to share the latter name, except for the very brief appearance of a fine cast iron sign around 6 years ago. On old market days, farmers traded on this street, Market Square and up Castle Street. The old pig market (bonmh) is now the centre for Birr Tidy Towns, with its outdoor classroom for children’s ‘growing’ workshops. STAYING - For those who wish to have an overnight but time-extended stay, to explore the Georgian heritage town of Birr, this is an ideal option: Early check-in; late check out. For this 'extended stay' - the brief getaway in Birr, visitors may check in early (from 11am on the arrival day) and check out the next day as late As 4pm, but bags can be left until around 5.30pm. Thus, a booking at Brendan House is more of a two-day, over one-night experience. Choose either the Red Room or the Grey Room. NOTE If two singles wish to come together, please write to request the special rate. . An option to linger longer over The Full Brendan House Breakfast Experience - a three course, much-praised breakfast, anytime from 9.30am up until midday is an additional cost. Mostly made with local, free-range, organic produce, meaty breakfasters might try Paul’s superb sausages, rashers and white pudding with a local farm hen or duck egg. But fish-lovers can try smoked salmon or smoked mackerel with or without a choice of eggs, and vegetarians and vegans will also leave the breakfast table feeling well-filled. Relax, eat, or even snooze afterwards. Afternoon tea upon antique china and linens, by the drawing room fire, can also be booked ahead. Before bed, have a deep, scented bath in the candlelit bathroom. Optional Extras . . . For an extra charge.... 1) Before or after your deep bath by candlelight, a glass of Prosecco or Elderflower Pressé with a gourmet chocolate, made in Birr. 2) The single visitor may prefer a glass of wine, light supper with homemade soup, or pudding and coffee, 3) What can be booked ahead is a wonderful Reflexology treatment in the house, with Brenda Abeyta, a superb reflexologist from Clonfert. Utterly relaxing! 4) We can add in a guided walk into the countryside, by the river and through woodlands or a visit to our local bogs, or a longer walk in the mountains, with or without a picnic. 5) A couple of hours of untaxing art tuition (tailored for beginners) in our art studio. INCLUDED: Brendan House is very close to the main attraction of Birr Castle Demesne. People staying at The Flag House and studio, are entitled to a €2 discount on their entry fee. Visitors can also explore the elegant streetscapes. There are two town trails. Discover the recently artist-created Famous & Notables of Birr Trail and find out about the histories of some of Birr's remarkable people from past eras, who made their impact locally, nationally and internationally. Brendan House or 'The Flag House', is named for the Prayer Flags across its facade. Uncertain of its exact date, it may once have been two 17th century houses which were then converted to one, Georgian style. As its original, elegant windows pre-date 1815, we can but guess at its venerable age. For single visitors there is a choice of two elegant bedrooms: The Grey Room or The Red Room. The Grey Room is more feminine in decoration (though men have enjoyed it too!) with a French style canopy bed and antique fashion prints on the walls. Interesting visitors who have stayed include a noted Australian poet, a renowned Irish Jazz pianist, and an Austrian flautist and composer who plays in concerts around the world. The Red Room has a more baronial style, with an oak bed and furniture, tapestries, period prints, brass rubbings and other artwork. The washhand basin is Moroccan copper. An Everest-summiting, Irish mountaineer stayed in this room, as have various distinguished writers and poets from Ireland and abroad. The two rooms share the bathroom with its antique bath. It was the second bath with running water, installed in Birr in the 19th century, and restored to its bright, original colours when the present owners bought the house. However, when a tranquil 'extended stay' is booked for one person, then only this booking is taken and the bathroom is only for the use of the one overnight visitor. It is only shared if a second visitor books to come with the first. In the evening, visitors are offered a welcoming drink - one of local Wild Food Mary's delicious liqueurs, by the drawing room fireside. In each room there are some of the lovely extra touches provided: apart from the vintage dressing gowns and Moroccan slippers to step into, bottled spring water and good chocolate, tissues and silver clothes brushes, as well as some pencils and paper for sketching or writing. *** No need to get dressed for breakfast! Breakfasts are served at a leisurely pace, brought up to the guest wing from around 9.15am (onwards 'til 11.30ish). For one-night stays in the single rooms, the breakfast offered is the lighter version, of two courses include healthy cereal, local organic milk and organic yoghurt or fruit plate and fresh juice, as well as choice of tea or coffee with a fresh croissant, scone, or delicious wholewheat bread fresh from the bakery. A third course of a cooked breakfast is an option. Not necessarily the usual sausages and rashers but a varied and unusual offering, from fishy to veggie and meat free as well as Vegan. Eggs will always be free range hen, but sometimes duck or quail eggs are available. PLEASE NOTE: There are no televisions but plenty of books, on a very wide variety of topics. If it isn't visible, just ask and we may have a book on a subject that interests you. We have a large collection of DVDs and videos for viewing - from 'Hollywood' to foreign fillms; costume dramas to comedy. *** Whilst the rate-per-room is as shown, it is possible for two single people to request a special rate when bookings are for two people, staying 1, 2 or 3 nights. However, it is an ideal place for the solo traveller and sightseer who would love to have the ultimate in rest and relaxation, or recuperation-time for gathering thoughts; creative time for writing; strolling, sketching or more activity with mountain walks. * REFLEXOLOGY - A treatment-massage of the feet by a superb practitioner of this healing, holistic art, Brenda. She can come to Brendan House with all that's needed, from the reclining chair to her homemade oils. The treatment itself lasts for approximately 50 minutes - with a necessary few questions at the beginning. Cost €55. (Or alternatively, attend her treatment room in Clonfert - cost €40 - and pay a visit to the ancient Clonfert Cathedral, etc. afterwards.) * Hacking on horseback along Slieve Bloom trails. (Check cost ahead at booking time) * A short or longer guided walk in the Slieve Blooms, with a picnic lunch. (€35 - €50) * Experienced walkers may borrow local maps for delightful loop walks, and more. Flask of soup or coffee offered for no extra charge. * An holistic treatment at Salann na Talún, Lusmagh. This is around 12 km from Birr. (There is a lovely bird hide on the way back, for bird watchers to view the migratory flocks on the Callows in Winter.) Whilst there are a number of treatment options for which costs need to be requested, Maureen offers superb massages for approximately €50. To avoid undoing the relaxing experience, we can arrange a taxi to collect and return visitors to Birr. * An excellent spa treatment at Secret Essence - a few paces away from Brendan House, on Main Street. All sorts of delicious facials, heated stone-massages and much more, from nail-work to waxing too! Audrey may need advance booking of at least 10 days to 2 weeks. * Art: Tutorials 'en plein air' with noted landscape artist, Jock Nichol - painting and sketching for a morning/afternoon or full day. Usually in the Slieve Blooms, woodlands in the foothills, or other lovely wild and peaceful locations in the area. (Enquire about his fees...but around 60 euros per day.) Other art tutorials may be possible too.) OTHER POSSIBILITIES....for exploring a wider area of this lovely region . Of ‘THE MIDDLE KINGDOM’ Gardens and houses open to the public, music nights at pubs or at Leap Castle.... Just enquire!
One of many good things about this elegant, fascinating small town is that it has a range of lovely shops, a beautiful theatre, town walks and parks, and is close to the Slieve Blooms for wilder walking. It has a strong arts and science heritage and culture. Around 80% of County Offaly professional artists live in and around Birr in the present day and in the past, there have been many remarkable people associated with Birr. [More to come in this overview, but I hope it encourages visitors to make the trip, as well as to stay. Just send a message to ask questions.)
  • A secret place full of peace and charm. When you walk close to the door of her private apartment, you can listen the most beautiful songs playing... Pay attention to the beautiful carpets and fabrics, sit in a desk (the house have many) and write a letter for someone special. Expend one afternoon on the beautiful sitting room just looking to the books and pictures.

  • Unequivocally a highlight of my trip to Birr - Rosalind was very welcoming and generous with her time and her wonderful home. If you're looking for something a little different I cannot recommend it enough!

  • I had an absolutely delightful stay in Birr. Rosiland's B&B is a total treat and definitely one of my favourite ever Airbnb experiences. Rosiland is so unbelievably kind and generous with her time, the breakfasts were incredible and the house and room can not be beat for character and ambiance. Definitely take the time to head to Birr and stay with Rosiland, you won't regret it.

    Bryn2019-06-07T00:00:00Z
  • Rosalind and her place are a poet's paradise! To quote Nick Drake, she's 'a rare, rare find'.

    Simon2018-06-18T00:00:00Z
  • Rosalind's place was absolutely wonderful! The whole house was beautiful in an old world way yet homely and comforting. I stayed in the Grey Room which was decorated like the set of an Agatha Christie novel and incredibly comfortable to boot. The breakfast was delicious and abundant, so I left the next morning well fed and happy. I would recommend Rosalind's place to anyone looking for a hideaway or a short break in Birr, which itself is gorgeous!

    Sionnán2018-06-11T00:00:00Z
  • Rosalind is a very kind, and generous host. The house is awesome and full of old world charm. It was the perfect location in the town for my short stay. Rosalind really went out of her way to prepare the ‘breakfast of champions’ for me each morning. Great value!
