Places to stay in Garlieston
Luxury Georgian terraced house, full of period features and style, in one of the most historic areas of Scotland; near the coast, open farmland, remote and yet easy to reach from the Border and Central Scotland. Quiet roads for cycling; beaches, birdwatching, walking and bookshops. Underfloor heating and open peat fire. King size four poster and cosy cabin bed. Glass-roofed dining area and courtyard. Friendly local shops and small harbours minutes away. Get away from it all and into Galloway!
Located in the earliest town in Scotland, founded in c. 450 CE, with visitor centre, medieval ruins and history all around you!
Whithorn's history dates back 1600 years to when it was founded by Saint Ninian, Scotland's earliest saint. We have a museum and visitor centre, small local shops, three miles to the coast and beaches, and cycling routes.
  • Great, comfortable and immaculately clean house. Really enjoyed our couple of nights in historic Whithorn.

  • Lovely house in a great setting and friendly neighbourhood. Had a great couple of nights. The bed was so spacious and comfy and the garden was lovely to sit out at during the day. Couldn’t recommend more!

  • An amazing place to stay. Peaceful, beautiful, immaculate..the list goes on. Far and away one of the best places we have stayed. Highly recommended.

  • What a wonderful house! Didn't want to leave. Not only does the house have everything you could possibly need, it is quite simply stunning and the history of the renovation just makes it even more special. We enjoyed long walks by day and evenings by the fire. Bliss.

    David2019-11-23T00:00:00Z
  • Precinct House was just about the nicest cottage we have stayed in, the house itself was perfect, the furnishings & Antiques were amazing, and the Peat fire was so welcoming at the end of a chilly day. we had never been to this part of Scotland before, and found it just as enchanting as anywhere else we had been, the people were so welcoming , the local pubs ( Steampacket Inn ) were exceptional we will definitely be coming back

    Tony2019-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • Gorgeously refurbished house in a period style with modern comfort. Very clean, cosy, warm and relaxing with lot of character. Perfectly located for exploring Whithorn - Whithorn Priory, Isle of Whithorn, St Ninia's cave and surrounding areas. I had a wonderful stay and Julia was a great host with excellent communication throughout. Thank you very much!

  • Cassie and Tristam and their family were great hosts; they warmed up the room and put on hot water for tea when we arrived late and tired from the ferry port. The room was charming and clean and conveniently arranged; the lovely little town of Garlieston was fun to walk around in, quiet, and un-crowded in March. We loved the view as well. This place was truly worth the drive down narrow roads to get there!

    Marianne2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great room, all you need for a short stay. A lovely welcoming family. A great little village with an interesting WWII history, and a great pub!

    Justin2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • We have been here for three nights and felt very welcomed. At the end of the street is the Harbour Inn. We went there for drinks and dinner. The area is really beautiful and the room and bathroom are spacious. A really nice touch was the breakfast we were provided with. There was a loaf of bread, loads of tea, coffee and other hot drinks. Would recommend this place!

  • This cute little place is right at the shore line of the little village of Garlieston. The village is quite pretty and definitely worth a walk around :) Plus the room had everything you could need. A really good private bathroom and stocked-up basic amenities like cereal, bread, butter and milk :) 10/10

    Tommy2019-11-29T00:00:00Z
  • Our trip to Cassie's place didn't go as planned (we had a breakdown), but she was so incredibly helpful and understanding of the situation. She was 10/10 for communication and support!

    Morgan2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • The room is lovely, with a big en suite bathroom (plenty of room to do my morning stretches!) and the beach literally outside the window! The family were so welcoming and friendly :-) Everything I needed for breakfast was there (Cassie and Tris even thought to provide some special items as I am Wheat-free and Dairy-free), as well as a microwave for evening meals in. Garlieston is such a lovely wee village. It was fantastic to be able to walk on the beach whenever I felt like it. A great little pub The Harbour Inn, with good food (and live accoustic music the evening I visited) Only a short drive to some other lovely beaches. Beautiful countryside.

Charming, well equipped, homely cottage situated on a quiet road in Garlieston. 200 yards from the sea front, where you can walk along the coast with a selection of beaches and gardens to visit. There is a terrific pub (Harbour Inn) a short walk away and a convenience store around the corner. Garlieston is a great spot for watersports activities, including kayaking and sailing. If you are interested in that, Cornmill outdoor activities are situated within close proximity to the cottage.
The cottage is named Gilhooly Wattle. Staying here feels like going back in time, due to it's 1970s feel. It offers a unique experience, a perfect escape from the modern world!
  • Overall fantastic and love the Retro feel, worked for us brilliantly with goodish weather and great craic from meeting people local, will be back

    Iain (Silver Fox)2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Ok so when you walk in it does feel very retro as if all furniture has been bought in charity shop but it is very cosy and you quickly forget all that. The place is warm and cosy and watching birds in the garden a joy. Beds comfy and yes making them on first day a bit of a pain but otherwise cannot recommend this place enough . The village is lovely and views of calm or rough seas really wonderful to wake up to

    Karen2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Great value for money - very relaxed place and great location for a total and utter dog friendly rest.

    Joanna2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay. The view from the bedroom would be hard to beat! We loved it so much we are coming back in May and we can't wait!

    Leanne2019-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • We had a brilliant stay at this lovely little cottage and can’t wait to come back!

    Heather2018-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely quaint and cosy cottage - the decor takes you back a few years but modern trappings are all there (WiFi etc) without spoiling the charm. Great location, handy for beach and pub with good parking. Would recommend taking a king size, non-fitted sheet for the double bed.

    Jacqui2018-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely place to stay. Very peaceful and plenty of places to walk to. I would advise anyone coming to stay to bring their shopping with them or call to Newton Stewart on the way in to save having to drive out to get food.

    Susan2018-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • The location is great if you are looking for peace and quiet and lovely coastal walks through woodland (which I was!). The cottage is very well equipped, and great for all those 70's decor fans. The garden is an extra bonus along with the swifts and the swallows. I would love to come back to stay here again.

Lovely peaceful seaside village on the wonderful Solway Firth. A quiet and restful place with lots of outdoor activities close by. Garlieston itself has an attractive harbour with both pleasure and commercial fishing boats making it an ideal base for sailing. The original village was planned in the mid 18th century by Lord Garlies, later 6th Earl of Galloway and the modern village retains the original quiet character. The village has an excellent pub and restaurant and it is worth exploring the bustling town at Newton Stewart which has many excellent shops and places to eat, or in contrast the quiet and peaceful book town at Wigtown which boasts many unique and interesting book shops and cafes such as the Beltie Shop and tea room.

Boot Cottage is a hideaway in the small village of Kirkinner in the Machar region, part of the UNESCO Biosphere in Dumfries and Galloway. You step over the threshold into a large open-plan sitting, dining and kitchen area and through to the garden with its own decking and seating area great for a sundowner or a Bar-B-Q. Stairs lead up to the large bedroom with King Sized 1000 spring bed. The ground floor bathroom has a walk in shower.
Although from the outside it may look small, the cottage is deceptively roomy inside. There is a Feeeview tv with attached blu-ray player, a washer/dryer, full oven and hob as well as a microwave, and all tastefully furnished and decorated.
Small village location, convenient for exploring the Machar region as well as the Galloway Forest Park.
  • Perfect little cottage for a quiet getaway, clean and inviting. Local shop was not far, great location to explore the surrounding castles, forests and coastline.

She has lots of info available about the local area/sights/things to do which is really helpful. Communication with Liz was excellent too, so all in all a lovely stay.

We would recommend this home to anyone who may be looking to book a really nice home. Really nice homemade cookies with nice bottle of wine on arrival where we were lucky enough to meet both Liz and Stuart

  • Had a lovely stay at Liz and Stewart's house. It's very clean and well equipped, both the double bed and single beds were extremely comfortable. The communication was great and they are quick to respond. Garlieston is a beautiful village with great views and a lovely little pub that also sell good pub food at a reasonable price. Overall a great experience and definitely will be back if working up that way.

Newly-renovated, light and airy cottage set in woodland with amazing wildlife. Close to beautiful, family-friendly beaches on the Machars Peninsular, the picturesque and historic Isle of Whithorn, Scotland's book town and the Galloway National Park with it's Dark Sky Point. Wigtown Bay and its atmospheric saltmarshes are a bird lovers' paradise. Our place has cosy, sustainable, wood-burning stoves, one of which provides central heating and hot water. Ideal location for Walkers and Cyclists.
  • Lovely location, nice and quiet, with lots of wildlife; cottage has good sized rooms, very clean, bathroom and kitchen both excellent; Dave's bread is wonderful! • We loved our stay at Ravenstone cottage. We wanted to stay somewhere with nice woodland surroundings so that we could enjoy the setting as well as travelling around the Machars area exploring. This cottage ticked all the boxes. It's not too far out the way and we enjoyed returning to the cottage every night. Very quiet & secluded which meant we slept extremely well. Beautiful surroundings with lots of little birds visiting the garden as well as red squirrels. A treat for us to see in person. Dave & Sue are both great hosts and we very much appreciated the little touches with the home made bread left out for our arrival. Altogether a lovely wee holiday! Very happy and would book again. Happy Days! 👩🏻👧🏻❤ xx

    Lee2019-07-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely place to stay. What you get is exactly what you see in Dave's description. The location is superb -- plumb in the middle of The Machars, a short drive or bike ride to the east and west coasts and the southern tip. Beautiful birdsong, perfect relaxation.

Dumfries and Galloway is one of Scotlands best kept secrets with its unspoilt coast line, varied countryside, and mild climate influenced by the Gulf Stream. he roads are quiet, the towns and villages provide lots of things to do and see, but above all you will find people friendly and helpful. If you prefer an active holiday there are hills to climb, paths to walk, golf courses to conquer, pools in which to swim and fish to be caught. For those who like to potter we have castles, museums, art galleries and craft centres and many beautiful gardens to explore.
  • What a lovely place. My last Air BnB was cold and basic but this was a warm, cosy, comfortable, lovely cottage. The central heating kept the whole place warm but we still had a fire in the log burner each night just because we could! The cottage was clean, comfortable and felt spacious for our young family of four. Despite the storm outside, when the sun broke through we even used the conservatory in February. Just a one minute walk to the sea front and a five minute drive to a lovely woodland, gardens and beach. We were even left a bottle of wine and some shortbread for our arrival. Hopefully we can go back again sometime.

  • A very clean well prepared cottage in a quiet but charming seaside village. Its a home from home with everything you need.More spacious than it looks from the outside, with a sun room for dining, and a large rear conservatory. We visited in January and had a log fire to enjoy, which made the cottage even cosier.

Everything you need is provided and tim gives good local tips. Enjoyed a lovely meal and a wee drink at the harbour inn. Very accommodating for children. Best to pick up a big shop in newton stewart as local shop good for top ups but not for all you may need. Lovely to experience an area we have never been to before.

Located in the picturesque fishing village of Garlieston in the Galloway Machors region of South West Scotland, Cladach is a three storey modern house, situated just metres from the sea. Wifi and Sky installed.
Ideally situated for cycling, mountain biking, golfing, walking and sea kayaking.
Within the village there is a local pub which serves lunch and dinner. Local garage sells basic provisions. Nearby Newton Stewart has an ALDI and Sainsbury's.
  • Fabulous family house that fitted our family perfectly. Easy to live in whilst on holiday. The house had every utensil you could imagine, plus helpfully, sandwich bags, kitchen roll and condiments. Great space down and up and we enjoyed watching the sea come and go plus the local cows enjoying the sun in the field behind. We loved gatehouse fleet, cream o Galloway, various castles, beaches, caves and nature reserves and despite the weather being forecast as rain rain rain, we had glorious sunshine! Food is great in the pubs at gatehouse fleet and the isle of Whithorn is such a beautiful place and the food in the pub was fantastic. The locals all around where we visited really made our stay, from helping us play bingo for the first time, pumping up our sons football in fleet, generally being happy and smiley to just saying hello on our walks. We had a fantastic time, love Scotland and will be back next year to explore some more 😎 Thanks Mary for being a great host and equipping the house thoughtfully with everything you need including the milk, bread, butter and treats of shortbread and fudge!

  • Cladach is a very complete and comfortable accomodation. Everything was thought of and Mary’s hospitality is noticed right away. We rented Cladach because of family circumstances. Despite the situation, we had a very pleasant stay. We were in Garlieston in the winter season and everything was covered with snow, which made it a very special visit to the area. The accomodation is very suitable for families or up to three couples, with separate bathrooms. The house is located on a unique spot with both the harbour view on the one side and the sea at the other, which we both enjoyed. I‘d definitely recommend Cladach.

  • Really great! Very well equipped, location perfect and very very clean.

    Jen2018-07-04T00:00:00Z
  • The property is in a super location for exploring the local area with walks along the coast immediately accessible from the front door. Ther are great views from the house and and it is excellent value for money. We found the house very clean and spacious and contact with the host was very easy - with extra information supplied and prompt replies of queries made. We had a very welcoming and enjoyable stay in Garlieston. Thank you!

  • Lovely place to stay, with everything there to make it a home away from home. A rocky beach just around the corner, plus a coastal walk, and lots of fun places for our kids nearby.

    Marguerite2018-04-07T00:00:00Z
  • We travelled as a family with my adult sons to Garlieston for a family reunion, so the location was perfect for our visit. The house is modern, very well fitted out, excellent kitchen with dishwasher. The bedrooms are very comfortable, bathrooms spotless. It is very well heated which was great for our visit in December! The description is very accurate. Mary is an excellent host, very east to communicate with and very quick to respond to any queries. I would highly recommend this house for anyone looking to have a family holiday in this lovely part of South West Scotland.

    Whithorn, Scotland, United Kingdom

The Drill Hall in Whithorn, in the Machars region of Dumfries & Galloway, is a former Cameronian church turned WWII 'Dad's Army' drill hall turned Council storeroom. In the mid 2000s it was transformed into the stunning home that we are now delighted to share with Airbnb guests. Whithorn is near the site of St Ninian's arrival, reputed to be the first to bring Christianity to Scotland. The light on hills and sea is remarkable, the people friendly, and historical/archaeological sites abound.
Our house is spacious and peaceful. Your hosts are a Bostonian (Catherine), who is an international charity development consultant, and marketing, communications, and PR consultant/former hotelier (Julian), who is now living his dream as a writer. We moved to this amazing house in late 2016. The Machars is attractive to pilgrims, artists, walkers, bird watchers, bikers, and anyone fascinated by the rich history of the area. Whithorn has a remarkable museum that incorporates a newly created Iron Age round house and a display of Celtic crosses only matched by Iona's. We are close to the official Dark Sky of the Galloway Forest (about 20 miles) but in the next village is the Galloway Astronomy Centre which, from September through March, can show you the miracle of the Milky Way, the planets, and nearby galaxies through its 16" telescope. Just to the north of us is Wigtown, famous for its annual autumn book festival and site of the infamous martyrdom of the Covenanters in Wigtown Bay. Garlieston (6 miles from us) is where the D-Day Mulberry Harbours were developed. On the west of the peninsula is Gavin Maxwell's home (author of 'Ring of Bright Water'). You will find standing stones, lovely formal gardens (including Logan Botanic Garden and Castle Kennedy), footpaths ... and did we mention the views? We often hear that this area is like Cornwall but without the people! Because we are on the Gulf Stream, the climate is moderate. We rarely have frost, much less snow.
You will find grocery stores, the "Whithorn Story" museum, cafe, surgery, chemists, newsagent, and Post Office here. We have 3 ambulances, the fire station for the Region, and even a helipad for quick trips to the hospital! The ancient Priory in this former Royal Burgh has been visited on the Pilgrimage route by Kings Robert the Bruce through to James VI of Scotland (1st of England). There is an active Church of Scotland and a Catholic church. Episcopal services are held in Whithorn on the 1st Sunday of the month or you can go to the attractive church in Challoch, near Newton Stewart. Everyone is friendly and you'll find that a simple trip to pick up a newspaper may take quite a while because everyone loves a chat. We frequent the Harbour Inn in Garlieston (excellent fish and chips), the Pheasant (Italian) in Sorbie; the Steampacket pub with its stunning views from the Isle of Whithorn over to Cumbria, Wigtown Bay and the Isle of Man; the Bladnoch Inn with its Fish Fridays and situated across the street from the Bladnoch distillery, the most southerly in Scotland. We will be collecting more recommendations as we dine around the region. Haute cuisine it's not, but local meals are reasonably priced and cheerfully presented.
  • Only here for a short moment but had an excellent stay. 5 stars.

    Jayson2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • We had exceptional hospitality from Catherine and Julian in a room furnished specifically for Air B&B purposes in their sumptuous home, in a superb location especially for people interested in landscape, walking, nature or history. (The museum and archaeological site across the road has some amazing treasures from 15 centuries ago). Breakfast was plentiful and excellent, served in their amazingly classy dining room. The house has amazing views in all directions. The Gallery area is larger than it seems from photos; a separate room which was available for us to use. The amazing home notwithstanding, the best part was the hosts who are naturally hospitable and welcoming, genuinely want their guests to have a wonderful time, and were amazingly generous with their time, giving us excellent suggestions of things to do to make the most of our visit, and places to eat. So worth a visit. We will be back for more.

  • Catherine is a wonderful hostess; great communicator, flexible and extremely thoughtful. Catherine even moved the date for us due to bad weather, notifying us in advance and offering alternate dates which we changed to. Full of local knowledge about where to visit depending on your interests and a fabulous breakfast in a historical building. What’s not to love!

    Catriona2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • It is a pity that six or seven star reviews are not possible on AirBnB, as that is what Catherine and Julian (and Rory), delivered at the Drill Hall. The welcome and hospitality we received was outstanding and we were made to feel like friends. They were full of interesting conversation and reliable recommendations. The property is magnificent, rich in history and character. As a base for exploring the local area (especially the book shops in Wigtown) it was faultless. In fact, we regretted not booking a longer stay with them. Breakfast was a wonderful treat, too. If you are looking for a place to stay anywhere in Dumfries and Galloway, choose here.

  • A mini palace with quirky style and very conscientious hosts

    Malcolm2018-07-19T00:00:00Z
  • A very warm welcome awaits you in a beautiful quiet location in a gem of a "burgh" on the Machars peninsula

    Carolyn2018-07-02T00:00:00Z
  • Catherine and Julian are amazingly thoughtful and gracious hosts. The parking is in the city center, with a short walk down Drill Hall Lane to the house. The house is beautifully appointed and furnished, with high ceiling in the entry hall, elegant dining living rooms. The guest room is on the first floor and is equally well furnished with an extremely comfortable bed. The bathroom was sparkling clean with abundant hot water in the shower. The WiFi is strong and a small desk is provided in the room. Julian had a wide range of offerings for breakfast, and easily accommodated our tastes, though I felt he might have liked to prepare more than we wanted. While he was offering eggs and blueberry pancakes (because the blueberries were so fresh), all we wanted was good Scottish porridge and coffee. Catherine added a delicious fresh fruit salad to accompany. With the addition of their good conversation, local area tips and suggestions, we lacked for nothing. The Drill Hall made our visit to this interesting area of Scotland a true pleasure. We’ll be back!
