The contemporary open plan living area with comfy sofas and wood burner, dining and kitchen areas, to the cosy bedroom with plump pillows and contemporary en-suite bathroom. In the garden there is also private Hot Tub underneath a pergola.
Key to the Esk is open plan living. The finish is to a high standard and the cottage flows very well. Out side there is a pergola containing a Hot Tub and large patio arear for alfresco dining. Hot tub features 80 jets and Bluetooth speakers. Every need has been catered for and guests will feel truly at home at Key to the Esk.
The River Esk runs at the back of the property, fantastic walks can be had along the river and surrounding countryside. This is an ideal honeymoon destination as the world-famous Blacksmiths Shop and Scottish wedding venue at Gretna Green is only 3 miles away with fantastic shopping at the Gretna retail outlet. Key to the Esk is situated in lovely countryside nestled between the Lake District and Northumberland National Parks, and is also only a few miles from the Solway Coast in Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders and Hadrian’s Wall.     First of all I recognise that planning a gathering involves lots of work, including research, and is not without stress. To that end, although you can book instantly, you might want to click on the 'contact host' button to ask questions when you've finished reading....I can help you with a lot: from a wedding reception or other major party to just a family reunion e.g. caterers for dinner (15 to 45 pounds pp) murder mystery (from 300), hot tubs, axe throwing, mini olympics in paddock! Welcome to my family home and principal residence. (I move out when you stay and it's all yours). It is different to most holiday lets in that you will see and benefit from the fact it is lived in. As such, you will quickly feel relaxed in your new home! - important if you are hosting an event. CLIFT HILL With majestic views over the Solway Plain, this grand building provides a captivating base from which to explore the Lake District, Hadrian’s Wall and Southern Scotland Clift Hill is a generously proportioned Edwardian mansion, designed for the last days of servants and built during the first years of the Great War. Long-defunct bell pushes can be found in most rooms, including some bathrooms; a reminder of a bygone era. Relive a time when enormous bath tubs and dressing for dinner were de rigeur. The house is the perfect place to celebrate a birthday with children and grandchildren who’ll be delighted to see hares in the garden in the mornings and startled deer in the overgrown orchard…my children say the house is perfect for hide and seek. Younger parties may enjoy darts, table football in the cloakroom and watching movies with the projector or the possibility of a hot tub after a barbecue at the fire-pit on the terrace. Others may roll up the rugs and put the bang & olufsen on max and dance! HOUSE & GARDENS The building was conceived in 1913 and finished in 1915, designed by the Chance family, who were wealthy merchants involved in the local textile mills (worth a visit). They started building the house on the small hillock opposite but changed their mind and opted for the more solid rock that permits substantial cellars. During my work on the house, I have learnt how much the Edwardians loved fresh air. There is an elaborate venting system that resembles in parts one of those pneumatic tube transport devices. Nowadays I try to keep the air from coming into the house but the eleven fireplaces and forty-four doors often conspire against me. However, the illusion of being outside when indoors extends beyond the air vents. In the handsome dining room, William Morris wallpaper meets wisteria creeping in at the windows, creating an impression of a real and an imagined garden intertwining. The enormous family portrait on the dining room wall was painted by John Walton in 1957. Sharp eyes will notice that he is in the picture, holding a paintbrush. The wonderful fireplace and decor make this a room that can be as formal as you wish, or the perfect size for long board games or late-night poker sessions. In the ground floor cloakroom there is a magnificent thunder box lavatory and large double sinks. Pride in plumbing is a leitmotif of this mini mansion. From the master bedroom with its interesting en-suite bathroom, there is a view on all sides over miles of wide, open landscape, with both the North Pennines and Lake District omnipresent. Today you can enjoy these views just as the original owner, Mr Chance once did. Nothing but nothing has changed! The house once had its own grounds, river, farm, greenhouse, stables and garaging for a multitude of vehicles. The river is approached by deeply sunken steps that are almost tunnels through the undergrowth and after a short hop past the cows you may find the eels and sea trout that my children loved. The cliffs here are particularly dramatic and totally unexpected, formed from an outcrop of very fine-grained, orange-red “Kirklinton” sandstone. Kingfishers live here and, if you are lucky, you might catch a flash of blue as you wade to the mini island at low flow. For large parties, Clift Hill swallows children – you will get just occasional sightings. An old school bell sits on the front porch for you to summon them to supper. Houses like this are familiar to anyone who has ever watched a period drama and being here, in the spacious, elegant rooms, the Edwardian period comes alive. The original teak sink for washing your crystal is still there as are so many other features. If you can work out why there are sliding locks on the outside of so many doors or why there are arches in the interconnecting bedroom, please let me know! THE AREA For walkers, Hadrian’s Wall, a world UNESCO site, crosses 10 minutes from the house and of course, we are a short drive from the Lake District National Park and also the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. An abundance of maps is available. Nearby is the Great Border city of Carlisle, an ancient settlement with Roman discoveries still emerging. The cathedral alone is worth making the journey for, with stunning misericords and a magical ceiling depicting the heavens in midnight blue silk studded with gold stars. In the nearby countryside there are some enigmatic stone circles - including Castlerigg, dating from 3000 BC, which has bracing views of Helvellyn in the background – and Long Meg and Her Daughters, a Bronze Age stone circle near Penrith. For rail enthusiasts, remnants of the days of railway glory are all around, with the old Waverley Line route still available for unofficial exploration just up the road at Kirkandrews-on-Esk, where incidentally is the most beautiful, quite long and scary suspension bridge (max. 5 people). LOCAL HISTORY 1915 context - the year of the house was also the same year the British ran out of Artillery Shells and a huge factory was built around the corner at Gretna for women manufacturing Cordite - Known as the Devil’s Porridge (see museum devilsporridge org uk) The area is also rich in other recent and ancient history, lack of redevelopment means that there is much to see and imagine. With maps you can cross and recross the river Lyne at all the historic fording points - we have found old cart wheels. Great little local walk through private woodlands leading to Hidden River Cafe (amazing full meals), ask for details Clift Hill stands apart, literally and metaphorically, from the other buildings in this area – the house appears on the horizon long before you reach it. All around are the so-called “Debatable Lands” – neither Scottish nor English for many centuries, families simply picked a side. You were either with the Grahams or the Armstrongs, battling for cattle, land and loyalty. PRACTICALITIES Clift Hill is a great landmark, sleeping up to 21 people in beds in 9 bedrooms (one in loft has reduced privacy) and 2 in sofa bed and more by special arrangement (camp beds and tents are an option). The grounds contain a stable, fruit bushes and orchard. There is a fun area adjacent to the driveway with trampoline, zip wire and often a slackwire. The views are of the unspoilt Cumbria countryside loved by Wainwright, and the Rivers Esk, Eden and Lyne are nearby. The local linear settlement of Longtown is unrepentantly stuck in a time warp and not at all twee. You will find the basics here. The hardware shop - John Graham - has those bygone parts you need and is worth a visit. There are pubs in Longtown and neighbouring Smithfield but the best food is just along the river at the Hidden River cafe - a lovely 20 minute bike ride away. MORE ON THE HOUSE HISTORY From auction records at Sotheby’s it is evident that Mr Chance liked his art and no doubt appreciated Ruskin. We have returned most of the house to an appearance that he, William Morris or Burne-Jones might have appreciated if alive in 1915: still lots of oak and proud metal work together with a smattering of stained glass. Many of the artworks on the walls of Clift Hill today are by family members, from portraits through to abstracts. Today, the house is slowly regaining the glowing vitality it enjoyed in the lifetime of its enigmatic original owner. It offers a unique chance to step into the world where servants were on the way out and central heating was on the way in. The original floorplan is retained and the numerous doors and two staircases often make you feel as if you’re participating in a West End farce. Visitors often find themselves congregating in the large kitchen with its Aga, two sofas, and old bell system for the servants still visible. Or playing the piano and singing! For Outlander enthusiasts, film and story sites nearby. Please also look at additional photos and comments on well known social media site under clifthill. Even if you can't all stay the night it gives you a chance for a hearty walk and lunch by the fire and still time for a quiet, if long, drive or train journey. Environmental considerations LED lights throughout, electricity monitors, some recycled paper products, vegan soaps and shampoos. Further suggestions always welcome -------- Airbnb has a maximum booking and pricing size of 16. Dependent on the mix I will take up to 27 but there will be some indoor camping involved as beds sleep 23. Tents in garden also possible. ON TOP OF YOUR QUOTE HERE, for parties above 16, YOU MUST ENTER GUEST NUMBERS TO 16 AND THEN extra people are charged at 35 pounds a night, payable before arrival. Due to valuable nature of possessions in house and the fact that I don't believe in security deposits, i require photo ID from lead booker and recommend that they insure against damage done by any of their guests. Chef prices usually around 25 pounds for 3 course meal. Less for buffet. 6 seater quality hard hot tub hire 250 pounds for 2 night weekend. (435/620 for 2/3 tubs) Dogs can come into kitchen with its 2 sofas but no further. Garden is pretty secure. About TV, I have a physical TV in one bedroom but you can use large monitor in study or projector in sitting room to access all your favourite TV shows over the internet. PLEASE READ HOUSE RULES THOROUGHLY BEFORE BOOKING. I am a super relaxed, accommodating host, but you know best whether the property meets your intended purpose.
    Walk across the field to the river Pick fruit from the garden (apples, plums, berries) Tourism I have a bias towards avoiding people on walks (main paths can be busy) and water. Culture is available too but in our opinion it is not the area's USP! Assuming you are up for exercise there are three great pastimes here: Hiking - bring waterproofs Lake Swimming - we have some wetsuits Mountain biking - bikes are for hire 1. I have lots of maps in the house and in my opinion map reading is pretty essential to avoid the masses on the hills. Hadrians Wall - Birdoswald, Banks, Crags and more Hills around Keswick - hire boat on lake Angle Tarn - hike up the river/waterfall Rydal Grasmere - walk and eat the local warm gingerbread Criffel, Scotland - a satisfying 3 hour climb in good weather if no recent rain Many other easy and hard walks, fitness and clothing dependent The waterfalls are spectacular after rain 2. Derwent water, rydal and bassenthwaite are good lakes for swimming and can be combined with other activities. eg binsey plus bassenthwaite, rydal plus mountain bike. 3. There is biking in the lake district eg grizedale, on groomed trails graded like ski runs. However the better experience (few people, well maintained) is to go to the 7stanes trails in Scotland. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle all easy access by train or motorway. Shop in England or Scotland within 10 minutes drive - Carlisle or Gretna. Visit the marriage shop in Gretna at the old Blacksmith's. If you like horses there are numerous stables. Blackdyke at 10 minutes is exceptional.

  • We had a fantastic time staying at Roland’s - it’s a beautiful big house with lots of interesting art, working fireplaces and great dining room for meals for big groups and entertaining. We enjoyed walking in the surrounding countryside, trampolining in the garden, the hot tub (NB extra cost and not under cover, which meant we didn’t use it as much as we’d have liked given the February weather - although still worth it for us as the guests really enjoyed it!) and a very cold but refreshing dip in the stream near the house. Roland made us feel very welcome when we arrived, explained how everything worked really fully and was quick to help with any queries or requests we had. I hope to be back next time there’s a big event to celebrate!

    The Border Esk is only 5 minutes away from the Cabin and features a fabulous walk. Canonbie sits in the “Debateable Lands”; a considerable expanse of land neither under the rule of the Scots nor the English, thus becoming a refuge for all the outlaws in the region. Liddesdale and the land around Canonbie was the territory of the infamous Armstrong Clan, which had the reputation of being the wildest of all the riding families on both sides of the Border. There was also a priory at Canonbie, destroyed by the English in 1542. The stones were used in the building of Canonbie Bridge. A mound can still be seen on its former site.

    Shepherds Cottage is a lovely, 3 bedroom private cottage in Carlisle. The farmhouse-like interior makes the private space feel like a traditional, British home. Bedroom 1 is double en-suite, bedroom 2 is a small double and bedroom 3 is bunk beds full adult size. Kitchen has oven, washing machine, dryer, fridge and dish washer! Property suitable for families and children. Cot & high chair available upon request. - Use “Stone Eden Nursery School” for address if struggling.
    This annex has been renovated and redesigned from the farmhouse cottage to be a functional yet desirable space. It's a perfect space that has plenty of room to socialise. The layout separates the kitchen and dinning area dining. The lounge also has a double and two single sofa beds.
    10 minute taxi into the centre of Carlisle. There is also pub/restaurant in walking distance of property (3 minute walk!)

I cannot say anything negative about this beautiful cottage. There is only one thing I can warn you about and that's the Indian restaurant one minute away from the cottage. It's so bland I just ended up wasting so much of my food I purchased for £40

    Our double room occupies the top floor of the house. It is large and comfortable. It offers privacy whilst still being part of the household. We are situated near enough to comfortably walk into town but surrounded by trees, fields and peace. CarlisleHouse of Characteris LGBTQ+friendly, disability friendly and inclusive of all backgrounds.
    Fiona and Roger's lovely house of art, music, books and peace is situated on one of the highest points in the city and has wonderful views. The house is within walking distance of the city centre and yet surrounded by huge mature trees, with extensive gardens. There is even a field to the rear with horses, ducks and geese! Carlisle is a small city, perfect for visiting the Lakes, Southern Scotland , Hadrian's Wall. It is steeped in history and boasts an award winning museum, as well as trendy bars and restaurants. Carlisle is a great place to stop off when cycling the Coast to Coast, Hadrian's Cycle Path or Land's End to John O'Groats. We have secure cycle storage. We are also 20 minute walk from the station. DIRECTIONS.:- Please note that sat nav will probably take you round the back of the house (up Tyne Street). Not ideal as track is bumpy and can be muddy!! So key in CHERTSEY MOUNT in your satnav and drive to the end. Park up on the LEFT under the trees to unload your luggage. Then Walk through the gate at the end. Click on the address after booking for clearer directions if needed. :-)
    Our home has all the benefits of being in the city but feels like you are living in the countryside! A GREAT LOCATION I'm sure you'll agree. Carlisle is a lively, safe, small city. It has a university and hence a thriving 'trendy bar' scene. I believe Carlisle has more trees per mile than any other city! With its tree-lined streets, gardens and parks there is always bird song to be heard. This year we have a resident pheasant in the gardens!

  • This is a great find! The bedroom is lovely with wonderful personal touches. The breakfast was beautiful - we could not resist the homemade bread and fresh eggs laid by your own hens. For us it was a chance to get a moment's piece in our hectic schedules and your place provided a rare retreat where we were well taken care of. Breakfast was awesome, as stated and the bathroom was one in a million with so much space. Your lovely sitting room, solely for our use, was also an unexpected touch and it was great to see such a wide range of literature and artefacts from all around the world, alongside a lot of local literature. A very peaceful stay made all the better by our caring hosts. Highly recommended!

    In our B&B-you have your own living room and bathroom. Our house is situated west of Carlisle (North of England); overlooking the marsh across to Scotland. A great place to explore wildlife, walk the Hadrian's wall or visit Cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh.
    In Burgh-by-Sands there is a pub: (please check for opening times as it is changing hands at the moment)-The Greyhound Inn, a post office and a church. Further pubs are in Monkhill, I can recommend for eating ( they take orders till 8 pm ) and in Port Carlisle and in Bowness on Solway.

    Shepherds Crook is a stunning three bedroom private cottage in Carlisle. The farmhouse like interior makes this space feel like a traditional British home. It is perfect for either short or long stays and has unlimited free off road parking. It is a very high standard property recently renovated and updated with a brand new kitchen.
    There are two double bedrooms downstairs and a twin room upstairs, there is a large dining kitchen/living space with a huge farmhouse table perfect for both families and couples. there are three separate toilets with one having a walk in shower.
    Shepherds Crook is located on the edge of Scotby Village which has a traditional village green, shop, pub, church, village hall and the best Indian Restaurant in Carlisle just a few minutes walk away.

    Welcome to Carlisle. You couldn't really get much more central place than our house. This is a ground floor room, at the front of the property, ideally the room accommodates one guest, but it does have a high quality double bed. 2 guests are fine but you can only access the bed from one side.
    Large townhouse in the centre of Carlisle, opposite the old fire station and close to the historic castle. A hotel look and feel, but at a fraction of the cost. A short walk from the shops and night life, a major multi point bus stop and the train station. In the house you have a lovely ground floor room, which is where the communal room and kitchen are also, on the first floor is your bathroom with shower. The house is accessed by a secure lock box, and all personal rooms are lockable. I do not live on the premises, but I can be reached at most times. There are two nice cafes within a minute walk, opposite the house in the Old Fire Station, and down the road at the Gone To The Dogs cafe. Further up town, there are a viarity of cafes and restaurants, or if you prefer you can use the kitchen and make yourself a nice homely meal.
    Our house is located right in the centre of Carlisle, a lovely three story townhouse. There is a 24hour pay and display car park located behind the house, and hour disk zone parking (between 8am-6pm out side these times you are free to park at leisure) a short walk away. Most local amenities are on your doorstep, and can also be delivered right to the door too.

    This is a clean town house right in the centre of Carlisle. You have your own tea and coffee making facilities and your own cutlery and crockery should you wish to cook. There is free super fast fibre internet. The high street is a minutes walk away. The train station is about 10 minutes walk away. There is free parking in the evenings in the disk zone area. Or a pay and display car park is right behind the house. I do not live on the property but I'm local should you need anything.
    This is a double room on the 2nd floor facing the front of the property.
    The property is very centrally located in Carlisle. Ideal for work or leisure. It's on the side of town away from the night life so its nice and quiet. However shops, dining and night life are between 2 and 10 minutes walk from the house.
  • Marvelous location, not far from the train station! There's several excellent restaurants nearby as well as a large indoor/outdoor pedestrian mall and many locations of historical interest. The kitchen is well-stocked, and it was great to have access to both a washer and drier.

    A cosy king bed suitable for a travellers, on the top floor of our house, cot and large sofa bed is available. The bedroom also can be a two single beds use. The bus stop is 1 min walk away from the house and you can get to town within 20 min on the 76 bus. (Cash only, for buses)As well as you can find train station and bus station at the town and is only 30 min walk from the house, taxi is only 8min. The area is nice and the nebourhood is quiet.
    Our cosy, king size bed is located on second floor. It is peaceful and quiet at late evening in the area and house. The bathroom is shared with the host. Guests are more than welcome to use the kitchen and fridge at any time. Our house is situated in the quiet area and does have many bars or restaurants around it but in the walking distance from Toby Carvery Carlisle which is only 14min walk away. However there is variety of food deliveries available in Carlisle as well as restaurants near the town. We are also located within a short walk from a nice Melbourne park with a river. We are a short bus journey to Town of Carlisle where you can find many atractions. As well as train station, bus station, shops, restaurants and cafes.
    We are situated near enough to comfortably walk into town within short distance and are surrounded by trees, parks and peace.

    A twin room in a quiet cul-de-sac, on the Western edge of Carlisle, 1.1 miles outside the city centre (approx 25 minutes walk). The Cumbria Way and National Cycle Network Route 7 run directly behind the house. You’ll love my place because it's in a friendly neighbourhood and it has a countryside view. Also, I will provide breakfast. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, walkers, motorcyclists, cyclists and dogs.
    The room has twin single beds (if you prefer, these can be moved together), a bedside table, drawers and hanging space. The room looks out onto Cummersdale Holmes, which has a riverbank footpath and a countryside path that is regularly used by walkers, dog-walkers and cyclists. We've worked hard in recent years to make a number of minor and major improvements to our home. We're now very proud of it and I hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.
    This is a terraced property in a suburban cul-de-sac on the Western edge of Carlisle. We are not in the middle of the countryside. However, as we are on the edge of town, there is plenty of countryside right outside our back door. There are riverside walks (alongside the River Caldew) and a country path - shared by walkers, dog-walkers and cyclists - directly behind the house. Please be aware that this property is 1.1 miles outside the city centre (approx 25 minutes walk). Although it is walkable, if you are looking for somewhere right on the doorstep of the city centre, this is not the property for you. Also, please note, if you are walking Hadrian's Wall, the nearest access point is 2.5 miles away. There are no buses that would drop you off directly at this access point and a taxi would cost you approx £7. Shops are 0.6-1.1 miles away (newsagents, Lidl and Aldi supermarkets, Co-op convenience store, takeaways, off-licence, cafes, cash machine). There is an Indian restaurant 0.6 miles away. The rest of the restaurants are in the city centre.

The neighbourhood is very quiet and there are local shops within walking distance. Getting Around By car it is 2 minutes from the M6 motorway. Gretna Green train station is a 15 minute walk and trains go to Carlisle (south) or Edinburgh (North) Local buses go to Dumfries and Carlisle.

It was immaculately clean, it has a small american style kitchen, a cozy livingroom and a bedroom with a very comfortable bed. We only spent one night there, but I could easily imagine a longer stay, while visiting the surrounding areas (Lakes, Pennines..) there'd be planty to see.     Countryside View Studio Flat - Only minutes away from the M74, this studio is perfect base for a couple or single person who wants to escape to the countryside. We are situated in a quiet corner of Eaglesfield, just past the Post Office and village shop, with lovely open aspect to the rear of the property. You will have access to the local towns such as Carlisle (20 minutes) and cities such as Glasgow (1.5 hour drive) and Edinburgh (1.5 hour drive). The Studio consists of a modern kitchen with oven, hob, microwave, fridge, washing machine and plenty of storage. In the lounge/bedroom you have a very comfortable double bed (with bedding provided), wardrobe, chest of drawers, extendable table with fold away chairs, modern flat screen TV, sofa and book case. In the shower room you have a large shower and storage. Towels will be provided. Fast Fibre Wifi is included. Outside of the studio you have access to the patio where there is a seating area and washing line which you can use. There is a large garden that surrounds the house and a driveway. The outside space is shared with ourselves but we don't mind sharing a bottle of wine on a summers day! This really is a home away from home!
    Eaglesfield is a small village that has many short/long walks to soak up the lovely views. It also has a well stocked post office/shop if you need to pick anything up.

    Lovely large cottage on the Hadrians wall trail. Located just 12 miles from Carlisle and Wigton and less than 10 miles from the Carlisle bypass. Approx 25 minutes to J44 M6. This is a dedicated holiday let and is newly refurbished with a large social living and dining area. There are 3 bathrooms, 1 downstairs, one family bathroom, and one ensuite. The cottage is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty and special scientific interest on the Hadrian's wall trail.
    This is a large cottage with plenty of space for 6 guests and modern amenities to make your stay very comfortable. The cottage has full gas central heating and a fantastic pot bellied stove with all coal and wood supplied for your stay. The kitchen is a great social space for family and friends alike. There is a private garden with parking. There is also parking in front of the cottage so your stay can accommodate 2 cars if needed.
    The village is an old port and railway town. It has a rich history and with the location is an outstanding place to live and visit. There are lovely walks and plenty to do near by. Visiting Carlisle is a short journey away, and so is the lake district and all the attractions it boasts. There are 2 local pubs serving food. One in the village itself under new management, and one in Bowness on Solway about a mile after the village. The nearest shop is on the holiday park 1/2 a mile before the village, it's open in the mornings 7 days a week and sells newspapers cigarettes alcohol and basic provisions. There is a larger local store in Kirkbride combining a post office, the local doctors is also in Kirkbride. If you need to do larger shopping and you are driving then you pass Asda from the motorway heading towards the cottage.
  • The Cottage on Hadrian's Wall is lovely, clean and very homely. A credit to the host Joe and his family. The pot belly fire was very welcomed and lovely and warm. Communication was very easy and host was available to assist when required. I would recommend this accommodation to anyone wanting a comfortable stay away from home. The community was very welcoming, we stayed for three nights.

    Welcome to Church View. The property is conveniently located to the centre of town and all the amenities Carlisle has to offer. Church View is a fantastic Grade 2 listed property retaining many original features. We have furnished it to a high standard with a mix of contemporary and vintage pieces. There is a superb separate double bedroom and stunning living dining space featuring breakfast/dining bar, cooking facilities, microwave, smart TV and WiFi. It has electric central heating.
    Church View is conveniently located to both the bus station and train station, many local restaurants and bars and central shopping area. It is less than 10 minutes walk to the historic quarter featuring the Cathedral and Castle. We are less than 40 minutes drive to the Lake District and 30 minutes to the Roman Wall. Carlisle Lake District Airport is a 15 minute drive.
    Due to the central location there are many eating establishments close by and 5 minutes walk from the late night bars and nightlife on Botchergate. There are excellent budget friendly home cooked lunches served in Oasis Cafe which is based in the church over the road. There are excellent entertainment facilities at The Sands Centre (10 min walk) The Old Fire Station (5 min walk) The Brickyard (10 min walk) and many others.   • With its high and grand ceiling and period features, we found Church View to be a very impressive flat. It's also very homely and comfortable, with plenty of lovely touches. It's ideally located in the centre of Carlisle, and while there's a fairly busy road at the front, it's mostly very quiet where the bedroom is located at the back of the flat. Also, noteworthy is the fantastic power shower, and it's nice that there's somewhere to place recycling inside the flat. Carolynn is also an excellent and very polite host. We very much enjoyed our weekend here, and would definitely return in the future. With all of that said, we highly recommend Church View to anyone that may be staying in Carlisle in the future.

    A large traditional terrace, sleeping up to 9, only a short walk from the City Centre with 5 bedrooms (all with smart TV) over 3 floors. Bathroom with shower to the 1st floor. Fibre WiFi covers the whole house.
    To the ground floor there is 1 double bedroom. To the 1st floor is a single and 2 double bedrooms. The final double bedroom is in the attic. All bedrooms come with wardrobe, drawer space and smart TV. The 1st floor bathroom had an electric shower over the bath. There is a second WC with hand-wash basin. The large Living/Dining Room has comfortable seating for eating, relaxing in front of the TV or enjoying the comprehensive WiFi coverage on your phone. The recently refurbished fully equipped kitchen has everything you'd need to prepare and cook a Gourmet Sunday Lunch. The kitchen also has a washer, dryer and dishwasher for all your laundry and cleaning needs. There is a fully integrated fire alarm system with emergency lighting and a CO Detector wherever there is a gas appliance. There is also a 2kg Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher and Fire Blanket in the kitchen. The sunny enclosed backyard comes with a picnic bench.
    The "Great Border City" centre is only a short walk away, as are the Tourist Attractions, Green Spaces, Supermarkets and Entertainment. Carlisle existed long before the Romans arrived in Britain and sits on The Roman Wall, a "World Heritage Site". We have been fought over by Scots, Romans, Vikings, Normans and Scots again. We have a proud Religious, Industrial and Military history, all of which can be experienced within a short walk of each other at Carlisle Cathedral, Tullie House (museum) and Carlisle Castle. There has been religious activity at the site of our 900yr old Cathedral for well over 1000yrs. As Carlisle Castle approaches its 1000th birthday, it still holds the title of the most besieged Castle in Britain and once held Mary Queen of Scots as prisoner. Be sure to locate "The Licking Stones" in the dungeon when you visit. If you are a Lord of the Rings fan you could visit Kingmore Nature Reserve North, for a walk and see the area where the "Greymore Ring" was discovered in 1817. The ring now resides in the British Museum and is believed to be the inspiration for JRR Tolkien's ring. Kingmore Nature Reserve follows the course of one of the country's great railway lines, which for over 100yrs carried passengers between Carlisle and Edinburgh. The Waverly Line was so called because it ran through the romantic and beautiful countryside immortalised by Sir Walter Scott in his "Waverly" novels. We are home to the world famous Carr's Water Biscuits and make millions of Ginger Snaps and Custard Creams every year. While you are wandering around the city centre try and locate the clock tower. It only has 3 faces; East, West and South. Legend has it that there's no North face because the man who donated it to the city would not give the Scots "The time of day". All this sight seeing can be tiring so why not seek refreshment in one of the the pubs that was nationalised by the Government for 57yrs between 1916 and 1973 under the "State Management Scheme". They were nationalised during WW1 to aid the war effort by combating drunkenness among the munition workers. Located close to the University of Cumbria, we have been used by: - Families looking at the University. - Couples/families on "City Breaks". - Those who are just passing through on their way North or South. - As a base to explore The Lake District (World Heritage Site) or the Scottish Borders to the North. - As a resting point for those walking Hadrian's Wall (World Heritage Site). - Contractors on short and not so short contracts. - Cyclists passing through on various routs.

    Semi detached House in a quiet village close to motorway access from Glasgow and Carlisle. The house is fully modernized with neutral decor and laminated floors. Two double rooms, living room, kitchen and bathroom with shower are available for guests. There is ample garden space around the property and a patio area leading from french windows in the living room. The property is at the END of Ashgrove Terrace and the house number beside the front door. Parking area just outside the garden gate.
    There are two dog friendly hotels a few minutes walk from the house that serve meals all week. Two small convenience stores are situated on the main street. Places of interest: Thomas Carlyle's birthplace "The Arched House" is a tourist attraction and has been maintained by the National Trust for Scotland since 1936. Ecclefechan lies at the foot of a large Roman Fort, Burnswark, whose flat top dominates the horizon. 2 miles (3 km) from the village centre lies Hoddom Castle, a caravan and holiday park. We are located close to Gretna Green, famous for the old Blacksmith's Shop and the shopping outlet Lockerbie, Annan and Powfoot where you can spend the day by the beach or on the Golf Course. Ecclefechan is ideally situated for walking, golfing, shooting, fishing and cycling activities.

We escaped Storm Dennis for the night and slept so well here - lovely refreshing shower too. Nice touches with fresh milk, bread and biscuits plus a well stocked with fridge and cupboards with bits n bobs. We’ll be looking to stay here again on our travels north. Helen was great at confirming our late booking - providing a Haven for a restful nights sleep before our onward journey. Great stay.

  • We had 2 nights at Helen's place, Never done airbnb before so didn't really know what to expect. Having read other reviews it seems that everyone is impressed with the house and I must say that we were not disappointed, Very clean, Everything was just right, Helen obviously puts a lot of thought and effort into getting things spot on, there was bread, biscuits, and just about everything you would need. We really enjoyed our stay, the local area has lots and lots of things to do, from the Distillery down the road to the Butchery in Lockerbie (my personal favourite :-) ) beaches, hills, castles the list goes on. We made one mistake on our visit, the first night we didn't know what to do for our evening meal so we ended up in Annan getting a takeaway (from Marmaris PIzza and Kebab (which was actually really good)) but we should have saved the effort and just eaten at the Ecclefechan Hotel (Dog friendly but not full of dogs) round the corner from the house, Really nice food, a decent selection of good quality beer and wine, and nice staff/customers as well. We did eat there the second night (the Burns Burger is excellent value and very good quality :-) ) The 2 shops in the village both stock most things so if you do need anything they are only 2 mins away. We are already starting to plan our next trip to Scotland and Helen's Place will definitely be part of it :-) I couldn't finish the Rubiks Cube, It's been about 40 years since I last completed one, but I did sit up for about 2 hours on the first night trying to remember how to do it :-) Alex & Cathy

    Petteril Studio apartment at Mews Wheelbarrow has a single entrance and is completely self contained studio within the building with high levels of security, external CCTV on entrance and internal CCTV on communal stairway. The studio has a King Size bed with super comfy mattress and two high quality single Z beds. The studio apartment has its own shower/toilet/sink and the specification is of an exceptional standard. The studio is Smart lock accessible ensuring guests do not require keys.
    There is a bus stop right outside the premises and approximately two buses per hour into the centre of Carlisle which takes around 10mins. 10 mins from Carlisle Station which is a main stopping point on the West Coast Main line to London, Glasgow & Edinburgh.
    A lovely rural area close to a traditional English village yet close to City (10 min drive/Taxi) and major road network. A69 & M6 J43

    This is a clean town house right in the centre of Carlisle. You have your own tea and coffee making facilities and your own cutlery and crockery should you wish to cook. There is free super fast fibre internet. The high street is a minutes walk away. The train station is about 10 minutes walk away. There is free parking in the evenings in the disk zone area. Or a pay and display car park is right behind the house. I do not live on the property but I'm local should you need anything.
    This is a double room on the 2nd floor facing the rear of the property.
    The property is very centrally located in Carlisle. Ideal for work or leisure. It's on the side of town away from the night life so its nice and quiet. However shops, dining and night life are between 2 and 10 minutes walk from the house.
