Places to stay in Hampshire County
Rustic, 100 year old 1 rm primitive cabin in West Virginia along the Cacapon River. Beautifully restored with wood stove, loft, & screened in porch. Access to 214 acres of private mountain land & over 1/4 mile of river frontage plus 1/2 acre pond, trails, and private shooting range. This cabin is completely off grid. It has NO electricity or plumbing/running water, but does have a Porta-John serviced weekly. Renter will be cabin camping so pack accordingly; tents also welcome.
The rental is a historic cabin with the exterior recently renovated to maintain its rustic look. It is suitable for outdoorsman, couples wanting a more rugged romantic getaway in private, or for family camping. Note that some building materials (stacks of lumber and barn boards) are still on premises from the renovations. The cabin has a large screened in porch and an open floor plan on the main floor with a small loft overlooking it. Four people can comfortably camp in the cabin. Guests can throw down a sleep pad and sleeping bag on the floor or in the loft or bring a cot. There are two cots and a small hammock strung between beams inside for your use. There is also a Porta-John serviced weekly outside the cabin. The cabin is completely off grid and does not have running water/plumbing/electricity. It is primitive camping in style, but that means you will see creepy crawly things like spiders and possibly even a mouse. You need to pack like your are camping. Also, it is mandatory you bag out all waste (HUMAN or otherwise). I recommend bringing a camp toilet if you do not want to use the Porta-John. Due to the water table essentially at ground level, we take proper disposal of human waste very seriously because it will rapidly pollute the ground water. On very humid days you may be able to here a distant crackling sound caused by the high tension powerlines that cross the property. Don't worry, that is normal. The wood stover is now operational for the season. Please familiarize yourself in advance of proper use of a wood stove and specifically the damper (YouTube). If you intend to use the wood stove, please bring your own firewood (wood may or may not be there), make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the cabin, and do not split wood inside or on the porch. The gas range is not currently operational. Please do not try to use it. If you would like to make a fire outside, there is a camp fire ring in front of the porch with some benches and logs to sit on and a pile for wood in front of it. Do not cut or damage live trees for wood. Feel free to bring a grill, generator, battery operated fan (it's hot and humid in the summer), or other convenience. If you want to just tent camp, that is perfectly fine too and I recommend using the upper campsite for that since it offers an excellent view and privacy.
You are in the mountains of West Virginia. People are friendly and respectful and enjoy their privacy and expect the same courtesy. Although very private, you will occasionally see a neighbor passing the cabin en route to their property at the far end of the access road. If you head to the back 164 acres, you will pass through a small portion of private property owned by a neighbor. You have permission to use the access road, but be respectful of their property and camp site/cabin.
  • Jonathan is a really nice guy

  • I love this rustic cabin. It’s fun to be off grid for a couple days. This is such a peaceful place. Weather hiking or just being on the river, it’s just a great escape. Thanks ! Will return soon.

    Michael2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time! It was COLD but our second night we almost got sweat out of the cabin by the stove! If you're arriving late like we did (11pm almost) I would take care to really pay attention to the written directions that Jonathan provides. It gets much harder to see signs and to see the river crossing when it's the middle of the night, but the directions were true and led us directly to the cabin without any second thought. We brought our own firewood but the extra wood split by the cabin was a thoughtful addition and we appreciated it being there if we had needed it. We were also appreciative of previous guests who had left spare supplies behind. You shouldn't have a shortage of necessities thanks to the community leaving their extras. All in all, it was a beautiful bit of land and we cannot wait to visit again when it gets warmer. The first night was rough with the cabin not being warm inside beforehand, and waiting on the stove to do its job, but our next day and following evening were great and a very memorable experience.

  • What a gorgeous location! We wished we could have stayed longer!

    Rebecca2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to disconnect and enjoy friends and family. Lots of nature, plants, trees, owls and coyotes calling in the distance. Had visits from possums to see what we were up to. We'll be back.

  • Love this place. Been staying here for 3 years and will continue to come back for as long as allowed. Everything you could ask for.

  • Was a great location. Definitely need a and not maybe.

  • Book this trip. Get away from everything. Disconnect from everything. You'll find a great connection with nature, as opposed to Wi-Fi.

    Great Cacapon, WV, United States

Our rustic river cabin is just feet from the beautiful Cacapon river. We have a huge wrap around screen porch. The beds are comfy, the kitchen is well stocked and the bathroom was completely remodeled in April of 2019. Pets are welcome to join you. We have fishing poles and 3 kayaks (available to rent), as well as a bbq grill. There are Adirondack chairs by the river bank for your enjoyment and a fire pit. This cabin is not secluded. The river parallels the road and you will hear vehicle noise.
Our cabin, built in 1935, started life as a hunting cabin. It has been updated since then, including a bathroom remodel in April of 2019, but still maintains its rustic charm. The fireplace is large and provides a romantic ambience. The wrap around porch, with a porch swing and several rockers, is the perfect place to sit and watch the river.
The Cacapon River parallels Route 259 (a 2 lane road), so you will hear traffic noise. Our cabin doesn't sit right on the road, but this is not a secluded cabin in the woods. It is really conveniently located for a trip in to Wardensville or access to hiking areas.
  • So peaceful - from the river to the porch to the quiet near the fireplace. Great place to just be.

    Michael & Nora2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • We have stayed in Jeana’s cabin many times and our latest visit did not disappoint. The cabin has a fantastic fireplace that makes it a really great atmosphere and it is stylishly decorated with second hands and antiques. Jeana let us know about bar-ish which is every Saturday night at The Trading Post in Wardensville and we stopped in for a few drinks and games. We really appreciated that she let us know about it ahead of time so we could plan to go. Overall it was a great time as always. If you’re on the fence about whether to book this cabin...just do it...you won’t regret it!

    Amy2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place! The cabin was a beautiful West Virginia original with modern amenities. Fireplace, fire pit and the huge screened-in porch overlooking a beautiful stretch of river were amazing. We’re already planning our next trip back.

    Kaylee2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • remote feel, but plenty close by; great little town of Wardensville; loved the fire pit by the river; felt like Laura Ingles Wilder sitting by the fireplace at night!

    Bonnie2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I always have a great time at this cabin. Very relaxing and cozy. :D

    Todd2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Jeana’s cabin is the perfect escape for a nice, quiet weekend away. Jeana was extremely responsive and accommodating. The cabin is cozy and comfortable, and is situated nicely on the river. The fireplace is amazing, and we pretty much camped out in front of it and read and watched movies all weekend. The cabin is very clean and has everything you need if you want to stay in and cook for yourselves as options are relatively limited in the immediate area.

    Kyle2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • What a great cabin in the woods for a weekend getaway! It only took 1 1/2 hours from Nova. If you are looking to reconnect with nature, hike, walk up and down the river bed, fish, have bon-fires, cook on the bbq, get the dog out, this is your place. It’s rustic, but perfect in every way. Major bonuses were: wrap-around screened in porch overlooking the river, in-door wood fireplace with as much wood as you can fathom, outdoor fire pit with chairs overlooking the river, charcoal grill with everything you need...comfy bed...Jeana really put a lot of time into making this an easy and curated experience.

    Becky2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was amazing, beautifully positioned over the Cacapon river and very homey inside. The kitchen was extremely well-stocked and blankets and firewood were abundant. We enjoyed the grill and fire pit. Perfect for a cabin getaway, no complaints and highly recommended!

  • I had a wonderful time! Everything exceeded my expectations of the place. The cabin was perfect inside and out. It is situated in a peaceful setting with gorgeous views of the mountains. You can breath clean air anywhere you turn. I loved to take walks around the area! Philip, the property Manager, was very welcoming, and always responded quickly to my inquires. I felt welcomed from the beginning to the end. I will definitely be back. If you are looking to have a relaxing week in a little piece of heaven, this is the place to book! (This is a Hidden Jewel).

    Ana2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Phillip was very communicative and helpful throughout our stay. We booked the cabin for a work retreat, and it was exactly what we hoped for.

  • Su's place is beautiful and very peaceful . Philip is wonderful host and is always available to help. Su has a great collection of books. I would recommend this place to anybody who is looking for serene place to relax or meditate. Thanks Su and Philip to let me stay at you place. I will hopefully be back next year!

    Surinder2019-12-07T00:00:00Z
  • An absolutely amazing and beautiful place to stay. One of the most peaceful areas and a beautiful view to go along with it. Philip was wonderful in making sure we had everything we needed.

    Lauren2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • I was taking a class in the vicinity, and wanted a place for quiet self reflection. The cabin is a bit on the small side and somewhat remote, but very cosy and private. Waking up each day to watch the sun rise over the mountains was icing on the top.

    Nathaniel2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Our second time here and we loved this beautiful mountain stay just as much as the first time! If you want privacy, this is the place to stay. If you want fresh mountain air, beautiful sunsets, sunrises, and peace and quiet, you have found the right place in this beautiful mountain and cabin. My only suggestion is to go slow on the gravel roads (15mph)...I was lovingly chastised for kicking up too much dust, by an elderly gentleman, and he got no argument from me, as he was 100% right. I was low on gas (should have gotten it when we were in town the night before) so was in a hurry to get to a gas station. I am glad he stopped me as I only hope to be surrounded by love on this mountain. The wildlife was wonderful to see...bucks, does, and fawn were a daily occurence. Cannot say enough about this wonderful place, and the host, Phillip, is such a kind soul, and such a joy to talk to. He is very prompt in his replies and even stops in once a week to see how you are enjoying your stay. This wonderful cabin is 5 star for it's beautiful scenery, serenity, and peace.

  • Gorgeous little cabin tucked away in the beautiful "Wild and Wonderful" mountains of West Virginia. It was the perfect spot for a 2nd honeymoon, secluded and romantic! The view is absolutely breathtaking. Location Location Location.... complete and total "Zen." We overpacked, as there are so many amenities we didn't need a fraction of the items that we brought with us. The cabin is Pristine and includes everything imaginable; it is extremely well appointed and stocked to: live, cook, relax, sleep, and bathe. Our host Philip made our experience truly memorable. He greeted us with a big smile and a bigger basket packed with an assortment of fruits, cheese and crackers, he is such a sweet and caring host! Check-in was seamless. Philip took the time to show us what we needed to know on how to operate everything. If you enjoy wildlife this is the place for you. It is located on a dead end road on top of a mountain. Deer are everywhere!! We were sitting on our covered front porch watching families (a herd) grazing, Bucks, Does and an abundant amount of fawns. We saw Fox Eagles Hawks.... so amazing. The pictures do not do this cabin justice. We could easily see several mountain ranges away and a blazing sunset every evening. One afternoon we saw a storm approaching approximately 50 miles away, what a sight to behold mother nature arriving, the view kept changing as the moments were ticking by. A tourist hint: a must see in the area is located in Romney West Virginia The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad Train tour. Tip: Spring for the 1st class ticket you will get an incredible meal prepared by a chef comfortable seating and air conditioning as well as access to the entire train. We would like to thank our host Philip for this serene memorable week. We can't wait to come back for another week, actually we would like to experience all 4 seasons on top of that West Virginia mountain.

  • Wow what can I see Angie’s cabin in the hills of West Virginia is a perfect escape. The views are amazing, the beds are comfortable, and the property sits on five beautifully wooded acres. There is a fire pit outside and a wood stove on the inside. I cannot recommend this cabin enough. In addition to the great views and accommodations, Angie was amazing to work with. She always quickly responded to my questions within minutes. She had great recommendations on where to pick up groceries, eat out, and partake in local activities. Venturing out to the cabin at night can be a bit daunting, as you are in the middle of the hills, but Angie gave perfect directions and helped us every step of the way. Highly recommend you experience the tranquility and nature of this cabin!

    Aaron2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Angie was an amazing host. She had always quickly responded all my question and made herself available at any time. I also asked for a late checkout and she promptly made it possible. The cabin is cozy and has everything you would need. As other people said, the pictures doesn’t show for real how beautiful the view is. Peaceful place with easy access. I’ll definitely come again!!

  • Great spot, in an awesome location! Great views, cool small mountain town close by...Unbelievably sweet and responsive home owner!!!

    Jeremy2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • We just had our third visit to Angie's cabin since last summer so we've got to experience 3 seasons there! It's top of our mind whenever we decide we need to get away for a quiet, secluded, relaxing weekend. We love the location in the woods, the cabin is always clean and we keep the fire roaring the whole time! We absolutely love the coziness of it. And there's a huge pile of chopped wood to keep feeding the fire. Check-in is extremely simple, Angie is a great communicator and very friendly. We'll definitely be back again!

    Allison2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • I highly recommend Angie's cabin. Very clean, private place, hosts are super nice, they were very flexible with our delayed check out request. Try Capon Bridge cabin out!

  • Karen’s place was super clean and we had a very relaxing stay! The view off the back porch is beautiful!

    Elizabeth2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • This cozy cabin was a perfect respite. Clean and comfy. Due to potentially scary driving weather, Karen let us check in an hour early which was greatly appreciated and when we got in there was extra/leftover wood for stove! We came as two couples with with dogs to stay in, play games and cook. Kitchen was stocked well, only didn’t find a peeler. Keep in mind there’s only one full sized bed, but found an extra full sized mattress under that bed, which we used in the main room! Great neighborhood, secluded, so quite and peaceful. The river was gorgeous- even in the frozen rain!

    Marietta2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • A perfect spot for for a peaceful, quiet getaway. The cottage is clean and comfortable.

    Melissa2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • This place is exactly as advertised. Located on beautiful land on the river, it was beautiful going outside and watching the stars. There's a great collection of DVDs and the fireplace was lovely to read by. Definitely recommend this place.

  • Love the River Haven cabin. Karen is very responsive and the cabin is the perfect fit for our family. We enjoyed using the kayaks this time around. Very peaceful in the Cacapon valley. The river access in front of the house can sometimes be hit or miss for an easy canoe launch so be advised to bring footwear you can get wet. Will definitely be back!

    Ernie2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time! The location is amazing. Tucked away in the mountains the cabin is located right by the river. We enjoyed sitting on the screened in porch overlooking the backyard. Everything you need is provided for a fun and relaxing get-a-way

    Ben2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely place for a low key weekend getaway!

    Emily2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • My family (including a 1-year-old) enjoyed Karen’s place and hope to make it back again! Our overall stay was wonderful and the area is gorgeous and relaxing. The screened in porch, with hammock, was perfect for all and we loved being able to paddle out on the river in the kayaks provided. This stretch of river is calm and pretty shallow so it was also good for swimming and wading with the baby. We are a big home cooking family and did wish we had brought some better prep knives with us, but otherwise found the kitchen to have all the basic tools and pans we needed. Also, there is a nice collection of CDs and DVDs to peruse.

  • Great place to get away. Back in the country with a beautiful sunrise view in the morning. Very quiet and secluded. Excellent for a great weekend retreat or longer just to step back from day to day life. Julie is a wonderful host. We had everything we needed. Just what we wanted for our stay. Hope to come back again soon.

  • My husband and I, our 9 year old son, and our dog all had a wonderful stay over Presidents Weekend. The cabin is close enough to enjoy the area, but still off the beaten path enough to enjoy some wilderness seclusion. Thank you Julie!

  • I had a great time at Harriet’s Hollow. The studio was very nicely decorated and the perfect size for myself, my boyfriend, and our dog. We enjoyed ourselves very much, it was so private! You really do get 100% privacy at this place!!! We definitely plan on coming back during the summertime. I would recommend this place to anyone!

    Shaylin2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely perfect getaway. The dog loved it. The baby loved it. And mom and dad got some much needed rest! Verizon is one bar and less than 3G here, so don’t expect to be streaming Netflix, but Julie has an impressive list of movies and some great books as well. We were even able to have a small fire and sip some wine. Previous guests have generously stocked the bath with toiletries and the kitchen with basic spices and oils. A real home away from home.

    Samantha2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I stayed here during our transition move between homes. So many great things to comment on. First and greatest is the hospitality and kindness from Julie. She went above and beyond to make us comfortable and help us. Awesome, private and very quiet location with wildlife right outside. Being able to stay with our pets as we traveled was huge and the house is extremely pet friendly. Very nice, clean and homey inside. Felt like we stayed at a family members home. If we didn’t live right down the road now, we would stay again. We will definitely recommend to our friends and family that visit and may want their own space. Thank you again so much Julie! Best Airbnb we’ve stayed in!

  • Shari really has a great place that is private for the guests. We were able to utilize the grill and make a full course bbq dinner for 6. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to come back!

  • Shari's place is a beautiful hideaway in a gorgeous setting. Shari and Phil offer outstanding hospitality and respond very quickly. When we locked ourselves out they let us back in immediately! We would highly recommend Shari's place!

  • Shari's cabin is in a GORGEOUS setting with breathtaking views. My husband and I and our 2 year old son stayed here in October and took a little walk down to the trail below and saw the sunset in the Christmas tree clearing - It was an awesome experience :) Comfortable home with plenty of room for us and fully stocked!

    Valentine2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • This AirBnB is the perfect base for activities in this part of West Virginia. It was easy to find, comfortable to stay in, and Shari was extremely helpful.

  • (note: we actually stayed at the North River Cottage, rather than cabin #4, in the same area) The cabin was great! The space was very comfortable, and in a beautiful location. It had everything we needed, and we actually never needed anything from the communal space.

  • Peace and quiet, beautiful landscapes, fun

    Mandy2019-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • Exactly as described. Great value. We really enjoy camping, but this year we had our baby and mother with us so we needed more modern necessities like electricity, a cabin, and kitchen area. We had all of that and more. The lake made for clean swimming. We used the sauna. The kitchen had more than enough equipment. Next time we will stay longer.

    Matthew2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • I don’t know where to start from but Vincent is one of the most amazing people ever he was very welcoming and very nice guy he made sure we are comfortable there and I am for sure coming back .

    Mansour2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Cabin 4 is essentially two normal twin size beds and two twin bunk beds, giving you six beds total, and a bathroom. There's also a kitchen table and mini fridge. We stayed with four guys for a bachelor party, and that was really all we needed. There is a very large community kitchen building with a dining room area with couch and table and another fridge as well as a large space to prepare food and cook dishes. Between four cabins, there is a fire pit and charcoal grill. Everyone cooked food in the kitchen or over a fire. Down the hill was a small pond that was very clean and pleasant, and further down was a somewhat larger pond with canoes and a dock in the middle. We fished catch and release, the highlight for the groom was likely catching a catfish. It can be a bit hard to gauge from photos and the abundant description what it will be like, but it's beautiful and peaceful. The camp is about 20 minutes from the nearest restaurants and shopping, which is also about where the nearest cell signal is. Let people you care about know you are almost there when you get to that bit of civilization, as there isn't any beyond it. That is likely what you came for.

    Charles2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay! The camp site is well kept. We found our cabin to be clean and highly functional. We enjoyed making use of the canoe, sauna, and cornhole. We roasted s’mores and cooked on the grill. Everyone was very friendly. We are city girls and so this was a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of DC. The campsite is quite peaceful. Just got back and have already recommended to other friends!

  • Great space with even better hosts. Would recommend to anyone wanting some time off the beaten path.

    Laurie2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • An amazing place! Darrel was very welcoming and friendly when we arrived - he had a fire already going in the fire pit! Would highly recommend for a quiet getaway. Definitely will be coming back in the summer for a different, but I am sure just as great, experience!

    Daniel2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect place for relaxing and boating. The cabin is charming and has everything you need. And Darrel is a great host. When we arrived he had fires going both outside and in the living room stove, took time to get to know us, and explained how everything worked. we will definitely return in the summer when we can swim.

    Jane2019-11-28T00:00:00Z
  • This place was perfect. It was off the grid, but also close to a store. It was right on the water, absolutely gorgeous outdoor spaces. The inside was quaint and clean and had everything we needed. The owner was helpful and kind. Beds, Chairs, and spaces were comfortable. We would definitely return to this location and recommend it.

    Sarah2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great getaway for a couple or family with kids, even in the winter! The king bedroom was spacious and comfortable, the wood stove did a great job keeping us warm, and the outdoor spaces gave us a lot of options for enjoying the view of the river (and hearing the sound of the local beaver enjoying a snack). At check-in our host showed us around the property, and gave great tips for local businesses to check out. We had everything we needed to relax, be comfortable, and cook our meals. Who needs cell phone reception when you have board games and nature? A visit here in warmer weather would allow better use of the kayak, river, hammocks, cornhole, badminton court, and outdoor seating. The big movie collection and fire pit are great year-round, and Darrel provided plenty of wood for both outside and the wood stove. Overall a comfortable, quiet, relaxing weekend by the river!

    Hilary2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • Darrel is an excellent host. He was responsive, had everything stocked and ready for visitors, and offers a great value. The pictures show you exactly what his place has to offer, so no surprises. Very nice and helpful guy!

  • Darrel was a wonderful host. The cabin was wonderful, quiet and calm. It rained most of the weekend for us and the covered porch made it enjoyable. We had an intense game of badminton during clearer weather. We will definitely be returning.

This cozy and spacious log cabin is perfect for a secluded get-away weekend or a big family reunion. Located just 2 hours from the DC Beltway, it's nestled in 44 acres of woods, with spectacular mountain views. Fully equipped - A/C, Heat, Fireplace The main floor has a huge great room with living and dining area connected (email hidden) kitchen. An enormous wall of windows (all the way up to the cathedral ceilings) means you spend your whole day looking at a beautiful mountain view. Upstairs is a loft, also looking out at the view, with a cozy sitting area, a full shower stall bathroom, and two nice bedrooms with one queen sized bed in each. Back on the main floor is the master bedroom, also with a queen sized bed, and nice master bath with a tub shower, and a half bath off the kitchen. This main level also has a nice, shady front porch, a huge deck looking out over the mountain view, and a cozy and comfy screened-in back porch - and a charcoal grill for outdoor BBQs. Downstairs is a finished basement that is sort of a recreation room and dormitory area. One queen sized bed, one full bed, and one twin bed, a pool table, a big sectional couch, and a TV and video game area make this large open (email hidden) for kids or teens to hang out. A full bath with a tub shower, an extra queen mattress and six IKEA twin foam mattresses make (email hidden) for a big sleep-over. There is the quaint small town of Moorefield very close by, with a few shops, a few restaurants, a Walmart, a nice bowling alley, and a movie theatre. Close by is the South Branch of the Potomac River with lots of tubing and fishing. Not too far away is Seneca Rocks and in the other direction is Lost River. But you may just want to hang out, read a book, enjoy the silence and the beauty, cook a big meal, enjoy a drink with friends, and go for long walks on the country lanes. Sorry! No pets :(

  • Amazing view. Very private and lovely property. Great for an escape and place to cook good food and have a terrific time. Floyd is a great host and excellent communicator ( directions).

    Luca2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin has a superb view! It is a very quiet place and a good place to have some private time with your partner or have a huge party with your friends! The house is very well maintained and is thoughtfully made - a bunch of board games and a mini-pool table kept us busy over the weekend enough to skip a lake and the wineyards. I would totally recommend this place!

    Omkar2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • It was a great cabin to be secluded for some intentional relaxation. The shelves were stocked with extra food and there was ample fire wood for cozy nights. A great time all in all! Incredible views — well worth the drive out. Floyd was an attentive host and gave extremely precise directions on how to get out there.

  • This place is magical. The photos do not do it justice. The views from the A-Frame windows provide stunning views of the mountain, the fireplace offers perfect warmth and coziness, and the love in the space is enchanting and healing. The hosts were so wonderfully communicative and checked in to ensure we were well taken care of.

Floyd was extremely easy to communicate with and even helped us when our car battery died during our stay. Rebekah2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • All I wanted was a remote place to enjoy some trees and a fire mid-winter. It was really tricky to find something that fit the bill but when I came across this place, I was immediately in. The cabin is beautifully situated, away from town but within striking distance. It’s in a flat clearing, with a few other houses which are far enough away to still give the sense of seclusion. The cabin was tidy and well maintained, all the basics you need. Plus there was a festive bouquet of fresh flowers—a lovely touch. Pete was great to work with. We were warm despite chilly temps and the location is beautiful. We meant to explore but ended up being so happy at the place we stuck close. We enjoyed sitting by the stove at night the river in the morning. Can’t wait to return during a different season.

Or curl up with a good book on one of the 4 outdoor iron beds. Feeling like a dip? Once inside, the romance deepens. You enter and are amazed by the soaring ceiling of the open air living space, that includes a kitchen and dining area. The kitchen is full size with dual dishwashers, stove, refrigerator, granite counters, and everything your inner chef desires. Also on this floor, you’ll find a half bath, laundry area, and master suite. The master suite boasts a king size four poster bed, and adjoining master bath. The caramel marble tiled master bath has a large tub, oversized separate shower with jets to massage all your worries away. Also, within the shower is a steam feature. Other extras include large closets and a heated towel rack. Journey to the second floor to discover three bedrooms and another full bath. The cherry room, aptly named because the entire room is paneled in cherry wood, has an antique iron four poster queen size bed. The white room is a cozy space featuring a full size bed. Both rooms have oversized closets, cow skin rugs, and rustic touches. The third room, inspired by the iconic red barns of the North East, features 2 twin beds, with trundles. The lower floor is all about fun. Here you’ll find 3 bunk beds tucked in beneath the stairs. For more sleeping space, take advantage of the 2 trundle beds beneath. There’s also a generous bathroom featuring a slate shower. Grab a beer from the old coke fridge and play a game of billiards on our '63 Valley Pool Table. Keep the night going with a fun game of darts, or settle in for movie night on the large projector screen. We’ve purposefully eliminated TV to give you that unplugged feeling, but netflix is available. Take a short walk to the river, and you’ll pass a fire ring that beckons for late night smores. Settle around the fire in the oversized Adirondack chairs and drink in the black night sky ablaze with a billion stars. Not to be missed is the mini log cabin tree house. PET POLICY: MOUNTAINAIRE is well behaved dog friendly. All dogs must be kept off the furniture at all times, must be crated when left alone in the house, and must be leashed when outside. If you would like to bring Fluffy, please ask at the time of booking. There is a pet fee of $65 per pet per stay, and because AIRbnb does not support a pet fee in their booking process, it must be paid directly to us before you arrive.
While Mountainaire is designed to whisk you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is not without varied and marvelous excursions and activities. Wether you want to soak up the natural beauty all around, explore history, art and architecture, get your thrill on, or take in the simple pleasures of charming historic towns, you are uniquely positioned to do so. Just beyond your doorstep the natural beauty abounds with experiences. Spend the afternoon tubing on the river, which is best done in late Spring early summer when the water is high, or try your luck at fishing. The fishing season runs year-round. Trout can be caught on nice, warm winter days. Springtime is the best time for fly fishing the North River because of the aquatic insect hatches and good water levels. Summertime is okay in the headwaters but the water can get low during the late summer. Fall is also a great time for fly fishing the North River. Hike the beautiful Ice Mountain. The mountain contains a set of stone chimneys called “Raven Rocks” and a large talis. At the base of the talis is an area where small caves hold ice most of the year. One of the popular ways to celebrate the Fourth of July in old days was to bring an ice cream freezer and fixing and dig ice from the mountain to make ice cream for a picnic. To this day there are flowers growing at the base of the talis that are found only in areas in New York state and northward. The mountain is a unique ecosystem for a middle Atlantic state. The rock chimneys are named after the large ravens that make their home in the area. Today one may also see eagles in the area. Private tours are available. History buffs will love a trip to Fort Edwards, once manned by Col. George Washington. Like other fort sites used by the Colony of Virginia during the same period, the Edwards site has remained virtually undisturbed for nearly 250 years. It offers a rare look at a fort site of this period and may also provide a window into the life of a frontier settler. For more information visit Daytrips will afford you a plethora of experiences. Explore the historic town of Bath, also known as Berkely Springs, just a 45 minute drive away. Art, restaurants and spas abound! You can even view George Washington’s bathtub. Cacapon (pronounced ka-KAY-pon) Resort State Park, located on the outskirts of Berkeley Springs, is so named because it sits within the shadows of a wide expanse of Cacapon Mountain, the highest peak in the eastern portion of the state at 2,300 feet. The mountain divides the landscape, with the park on the eastern slope and the Cacapon River winding along the base of the western slope. There are so many wonderful things to do in this spectacular mountain park, which is open to the public, including golf, horseback riding, hiking, and lake activities. For more information Another beautiful town to visit is Winchester, VA. Discover charming shops delicious restaurants, centuries old architecture, numerous historical landmarks and museums waiting to be explored. Old Town Winchester offers convenience, charm and a warm welcome to all. Just 90 minutes away, Deep Creek Lake offers activities for the whole family. This spot in Western Maryland is a true all seasons destination. Snowboard, ski and even ice-fish or dogsled all winter, then come back for white water rapids, bass fishings, jet skiing and more in the summer. Luray Caverns, about 1 hour 35 minutes drive from Mountainaire, is the most popular caverns in Eastern America. Guided tours along well-lighted, paved walkways lead visitors through cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10-stories high, towering stone formations, and natural wonders at every turn. Enormous chambers are filled with towering stone columns, shimmering draperies and crystal-clear pools. The National Park Service and the Department of Interior designated Luray Caverns a Registered Natural Landmark. Only 2 hours away, you can tour Frank Lloyd Wright's, Falling Water. Fallingwater is a house built between '36 and '39 over a waterfall in southwest Pennsylvania. Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s most famous architect, designed the house for his clients, the Kaufmann family. It instantly became famous, and today it is a National Historic Landmark. It’s a house that doesn’t even appear to stand on solid ground, but instead stretches out over a 30’ waterfall. Advanced tickets are recommended as this is a highly popular destination.
  • The Mountainaire cabin exceeded our expectations. The cabin was beautiful designed with thoughtful details throughout- from heated floors, beautiful rustic fixtures, a fully stocked kitchen and an abundance of spaces to congregate- our only disappointment was not being here when it was warmer when we could truly enjoy every spot this wonderful cabin had to offer. We spent the weekend by the fireplace, watching movies on the large projector tv, cooking delicious meals in the kitchen and exploring the grounds. There was a wonderful hike right off the property, a fun river and suspension bridge, a nice hot tub and plenty of space for our group of 10. This cabin was more luxurious than most- with a lot of really wonderful touches that made staying here quite comfortable- which we thought made this spot truly unique. The outdoor spaces looked equally as nice and we look forward to returning again to experience this awesome cabin in the fall or spring when you can really enjoy the entire property. The hosts were extremely easy to get in touch with- and thought of everything- making our stay that much easier.

  • This luxury cabin is unparalleled. If you're looking for an amazingly furnished property with all sorts of special touches and great privacy than this is the place for you. We were particularly impressed with how well stocked the kitchen is and easy to use all the amazing amenities are. Stephen and Mary are clearly experts in the hospitality business! This place is amazing!

  • We have stayed at a quite a few cabins in our travels and this is by far our favorite. The space is beautiful, the area is perfect, and we loved the game room and outdoors! We may need to get there in the summer time and we hardly ever revisit the same places, but this home is worth a second visit. It was the kitchen stocked with every tool we needed for us to make our Thanksgiving family dinner. We enjoyed the long weekend and highly recommend this lovely cabin! Thank you for sharing your place with us!

  • This cabin is beautiful. Inside and out, this place will blow you away. The layout and design is as comfortable as much as it is aesthetically pleasing. The pictures of this cabin are awesome but they do not do it justice. Stephen and Mary were great hosts also. They provided us with everything we needed. Gave us a check in list before we got there and sent a reminder email for checking out before we left. I would give this place more than five stars if I could.

    Steven2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a party of 12 people and everyone had a blast. It rained our entire first day, but the enclosed wrap around porch made it so we weren't stuck inside all day. The pool was one of our favorite parts, along with the sound system that is consistent throughout the entire house. There's no service for phones, but the wifi was strong enough for our entire party. There also was a great 2.8 mile hike right behind the house that led to some amazing views. Definitely want to come back!

    Matt2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • We hired this cabin for a work retreat with 9 people. It was very comfortable for everyone and has several luxurious touches. The kitchen is a dream with plenty of space to work. It is a wonderful mix of old-school flavor and modern amenities. I can't wait to go back. :D

It's completely hidden in a clearing on the hill in the middle of the forest not far from the barn Different times of the year bring different songbirds and other wildlife. Check out a rustic getaway at the distillery https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/19909646?location=rada%20wv%20distillery
You'll be staying in the Potomac Highlands in Hampshire County WV. Views of Appalachia and valley. Area has a long history of moonshiners, and union and confederate soldier occupation. Scenic train ride runs seasonally from Romney to Petersburg.
  • We had such a great time in this space. Absolutely recommend! I wanted a camping space with an extra bit of flare but didn’t want to sacrifice the experience. And this place was exactly what I wanted :)

    Galilea2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • Everything was amazing. Stephen is so nice to talk to and very generous. The space is totally secluded and beautiful. The tent is spacious, clean, and cozy. Definitely check out the distillery

    Harry2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Stephen was quick to communicate, very friendly and thought of everything you could need while camping. The views and spirit were great too!

    Amanda2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Stephen was a wonderful host! The property was beautiful and had everything we needed to camp and a few extras! The tasting at the distillery was a lot of fun and Stephen was so kind to give my husband and I a small bottle since we were there celebrating our anniversary. Would highly recommend and we plan on going back!

    Jessica2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Flying Squirrel Ranch and Farm is like the bed and breakfast of camping. Stephen is the most thoughtful, gracious host. There are so many thoughtful little touches, from the tea and mugs in the yurt, to the already prepared fire just waiting fo you to light. The surroundings are beautiful, ammenities comforting and every little detail thought of. Truly, the best part of the trip was the host, Stephen. He was kind and thoughtful, driving us and our over packed bags up and down the hill, because out little car definitely couldn't make it, giving us a tasting of all of his craft spirits (which we enjoyed and bought plenty to bring home), and just making us feel at home in his home. We will 100% be back and bring our family with us. P.S. There are no words to explain how amazing showering outside, under the stars is. Trust me, it alone is worth the trip!

    Amber2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome experience! Comfy private beautiful camp site. Outdoor shower was the unexpected star of the site. It was fun talking to Stephen about his distillery and trying out what he makes. The property has amazing views and fun places to explore. We can't wait to go back. So glad we discovered it.

    Andrew2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Stephen was such a welcoming and genuine host. The campsite was a beautiful oasis with a hot/cold outdoor shower (my favorite part), a little kitchen area (with a hot plate, tea kettle, oven, and utensils), and picnic table. The tent had such an earthy/comfortable style and was very cozy. It was nice being in there at night right in front of the fire. Our favorite part was the tasting that he gave us of his homemade gin, vodka, bourbon, etc. it was amazing and such a unique experience!!!! Thanks Stephen for making our first airbnb experience a magical one! The only part of the trip that was unexpected was that my little honda civic could barely make it up the hill, but you just need to give it gas right when coming in :)

    Katelin2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • The listing is exactly as described! Perfect for campers who want a few special touches! Hot outdoor shower was lovely, cooking utensils were provided and the tent was comfortable. Great place to sleep under the stars!

Gorgeous 2 story Custom Built Log Cabin in a private setting. Guests have complete privacy downstairs and private entrance and exit with 2 bedrooms, full bathroom, a breakfast bar, coffee, dvd collection and games for entertainment. About 40 mintues from historic Winchester. Come enjoy the tranquility of the country.
1500 sq ft downstairs with patio and seperate entrance. Complete privacy. Peaceful and tranquil country setting. Safe and secure.
We just recently moved here from Maine to be closer to family. We love the seclusion of the mountains, and all the amazing wildlife we see every day, yet we are still close enough to Winchester VA (about 40 mintues) for a little burst of city life.
  • Big apartment in the countryside. Nice touch is the foosball table. WiFi is slow.

  • Kim was extremely kind and helpful. The place was cozy and had a great aesthetic. Was the perfect place to unplug, relax, and regroup for the night! Thanks so much for the time Kim!

    Olga2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • Kim’s accommodation was cosy and welcoming. She really took care of us during our stay and her hospitality is exceptional. She served us breakfast daily and also made sure we had snacks in our place the whole time. Overall the place was really clean with a separate access and the neighborhood was homy. There are a few places to explore in and around. More importantly if you are looking for a vacation away from all the hustle and bustle this place should fit the bill perfectly!

Overlooking a valley in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains and stocked with everything you need for a getaway (towels/linens/full kitchen). Philip, the property caretaker lives nearby and was very communicative/supportive of us as we stayed there. A wonderful place to reflect/getaway; I highly recommend it!

The Diamond House is a serene modern retreat deep in the woods of West Virginia on 23 acres, but still only 1.5 hrs from the D.C. area. The Diamond House has vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors, and is filled with windows that provide access to views that stretch for miles and natural light throughout the day. Amazing sunsets. A perfect retreat from the hustle of the city.
Designed by award-winning architect Aaron Poritz (poritzandstudio.com), the Diamond House is a modern, minimalist interpretation of a cabin in the woods. Just completed in 2016, the Diamond House was built facing the southwest so light pours in through varied-sized windows creating angles and shadows that reflect the house's unique, angular design. The open kitchen, living and dining room space upstairs is the perfect spot to gaze at the view over the Warden Lake valley. Downstairs bedrooms stay cool in the summer and open up on to a patio and garden.
Located in the Lost River area of WV. Filled with great country towns, beautiful mountains and valleys. There are farmers markets, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fishing and access to multiple state parks and national forests and recreation areas. Don't miss out on bluegrass weekends at the local farmers market https://caponcrossing.com/bluegrass-in-the-barn/ And be sure to visit the best trading post in WV and check for their regular activities and supper club https://www.lostrivertradingpost.com/ Great Shenandoah valley vineyards make the trip out and back even more enjoyable.

  • This is a great location deep in the woods. If you are looking for seclusion with a modern feel, this is your house.

    Leah2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I booked this modern Cabin in the Woods for a luxurious Valentine’s Day long weekend and let me tell you- we were NOT disappointed. Immediately upon pulling up to the property, we were blown away by the perfect location and stunning views. The open-concept layout made for perfect unending views of the rolling mountains on both the top and bottom floors. We made heavy use of the charcoal grill and fire pit, despite the frigid temperatures. If you love the mountains and need a romantic getaway, look no further than Tiernan and Rachel’s place!

  • Amazing views at this house! It was peak colors and the mountains and foliage are gorgeous. House was very spacious and comfortable. The fire pit was fun! Great location, enjoyed Wardensville too! Easy trip from the DC area.

  • Perfect weekend getaway!!! Put your phone & laptop away, snuggle up with a book and enjoy the view. Don't expect strong internet, you'll have to wait till later to post on Instagram. But that's one of the things I loved the most. we were able to totally disengage the world and enjoy the gorgeous views and silence of the woods. The house is great & has a fire pit out back. Soo Serene!! Do make sure you bring everything you'll need, it's a trek into town. You get the seclusion of deep woods camping with the amenities of home. Highly recommend and can't wait to come back!

  • We booked this home last minute because we were evacuated from our family vacation in North Carolina due to hurricane Florence. It was a big difference going from the beach to the mountains but it was well worth it! Our host was so accommodating and quick to respond. We arrived at night and the directions that were provided were spot on and the house was easy to find. The area is beautiful and we had fun exploring the property and walking the trails near by. Our vacation was slavaged and we will have memories to last a lifetime !

Spectacular 100 mile panoramic view from the top of Big Bear Mountain. This well appointed cabin has an open floor plan with an updated kitchen and breakfast bar with seating for four. Living room has comfortable furnishings and a wood burning fireplace with raised hearth. Two spacious bedrooms and custom bathroom. Watch the sunrise and sunset over Shenandoah Valley from the wrap around deck. Comfortable outdoor furniture for relaxing. Close to wineries and historic downtown Winchester.
There are three lakes (one with a beach for swimming).
  • Absolutely amazing sunrise views!! So worth getting up early to see. Plenty of places to hike, Shenandoah National Park was only an hour drive away. Michael was a great host and very informative about things to do in the area. Such a great weekend getaway in nature (and definitely an adventurous, fun ride up the mountain to the house!)

    Grace2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • This place is just perfect. The house is adorable and has everything you'll need. The views are just stunning. Perfect location on top the mountain and just a short drive to town. Really enjoyed being able to use the fireplace this weekend. Even woke up to a little dusting of snow on the mountain. Just beautiful! Highly recommend! And will be coming back!!!

  • Michael’s place is wonderful and he is very responsive. The views are so expansive they are difficult to capture. Set your alarm so you don’t miss sunrise and settle in for the show. Sunsets are also great. The cabin is well equipped, cozy, and clean. The drive up/down the mountain is a fun one. I’d never been to Winchester before; it is a hidden gem. Highly recommend Bonnie Blue for any meal/coffee/snack. Lots of historical sites worth checking out. Thank you, Michael! Looking forward to my next stay.

  • Our stay at Michael's cabin was fantastic. The location was perfect for those who want to be secluded but also be close enough to have a quick drive to the bars, restaurants, and nightlife of Winchester. We had a small issue unlocking the front door (through our own making) but Micheal was very quick to answer all of our questions and help us. When we visit Winchester again we will definitely be booking this cabin through Michael.

    Nicholas2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • The view from Michael's place is absolutely incredible. There is a wrap-around deck and large windows with plenty of seating in both areas so there is no shortage of ways to enjoy the view. Inside, the house was very clean and had every amenity that we needed. Highly recommend, we will hopefully be back soon!

  • We enjoyed our relaxing stay at this cozy, rustic cabin in the quiet WV countryside! Very comfortable bed and everything we needed for the weekend. It was also a lot of fun to taste bourbon at the distillery next door.

  • Our stay was so lovely and relaxing. The unit was quaint, comfortable and clean. It was fun digging in the shale for fossils and wondering the forest looking for mushrooms. The deck was an amazing place to cuddle in a blanket, watch the night sky and listen to the evening bugs singing. The host was warm, fun and knowledgable. The distilling experience was great. We'll definitely go back. Thank You Stephen!

    Shirley2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • This was an amazing find. Perfect for a weekend (or longer) getaway, Stephen has a great property to explore, a beautiful little cabin that is tastefully furnished and includes a great deck to lounge on or look at the stars from. We were lucky to be with Stephen on a day where he had a class on how to make gin too, which was a great experience! And on its own his distillery is worth the visit.

    Marc-Andrea2019-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • The perfect place for a quiet, secluded get away. The distillery is beautiful and Stephen is a fantastic host. The cabin has all the essential amenities and more. Loved reading and star gazing on the deck and having drinks by the fire pit. The view from behind the distillery is stunning; the perfect spot to enjoy a morning cup of coffee! Stephen also recommended some great near by activities, including a local music festival, which was a lot of fun. All the stars! We look forward to visiting again!

    Kristine2019-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • Stephan is a wonderful host and his space is unique. It has a lot of character. We had a nice time relaxing under the blue sky, fishing in the pond and driving around town.

    Rob2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • Basic accommodations , perfect when you are biking the C&O. Host Daniel is a volunteer on the canal and can answer any questions. He is a wealth of knowledge. Breakfast was super.

    John And William2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • If you are bicycling the C&O, you should stay with Daniel. His local tips and his directions saved us 16 miles and put us on 30 miles of good paving that parallels the C&O. He also cooks breakfast individually (for each guest). I was amazed at his hospitality. My friend (Shawn) and I have never had a more informative host. You will not be dieappointed. Thank you, Dan.

    Bob2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • I can't impress enough upon C&O travelers Dan's hospitality and generosity. From meeting us in the cool darkness of Paw Paw tunnel, to the cozy home-like accommodations, to the recommendations of "dining options" in Paw Paw (limited, btw) and wrapping up with a great home-cooked breakfast and conversation and inspiring words. You will experience true spirit of a genuinely positive human spirit serving others. It is one of the memorable highlights of our C&O Canal Towpath passage.

    Richard2019-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Dan's place was just as expected. Dan was a super host, kind and wise and willing to help those in need. Really was a boost to meet someone so open and willing to help his fellow humans along the trail!

  • This is the perfect glampsite if you are looking to getaway and unplug for the weekend. Stephan was an all-round excellent host. He gave us a tour of the distillery with samples of his various spirits. The property was beautiful, unique and clean! We even caught several fish from his pond. Will be looking forward to another stay here at The Distillery!

    Emalee2019-09-29T00:00:00Z

Our rustic modern mountain getaway is available for our guests. We have 24 beautiful acres just south of the Green Ridge State Forest which contains an expanse of 47,000 acres for public use. For nature lovers: hiking, cycling, or just walking the C&O Canal Towpath (near mile-marker 157) is only a few minutes away. Visiting the historic Paw Paw tunnel or kayaking on the Potomac River are other nearby activities only minutes away from our home.
Our home is a cabin with wood ceilings and floors, re-purposed wood work, a fireplace, wood stove, full modern kitchen, and a bathroom. We have three decks surrounded by 24 private wooded acres right off of Gorman Road. We have a gas grill available for guest use. There is one neighbor to the right of the house. Up the mountain, there are no close neighbors.
We have only one neighbor family that you may see; right next door. They live there full time and are very nice, so please be respectful and courteous. They have two dogs that often come over to our home. Ragnar is the large black german shepherd and is a puppy that barks a lot but is not aggresive (he is not allowed in the house). The other dog is a short, fat corgi named Squishy and he used to be our dog. He still thinks he lives there and comes over all the time. If you want to bring him in please talk to the neighbor to make sure they are ok with it.
  • We really enjoyed our stay at the cabin. The wood stove and fireplace were the highlight of our trip. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for a nice retreat into the woods. If was very quiet, and there were lots of birds to see right out the bedroom window.

  • Beautiful!

    Jennifer2019-05-05T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful house and great location! Make sure you visit Paw Paw tunnel and Cumberland :) Also, you will most likely loose all phone signal withing a 30 min drive radius from the house, make sure you have all the information you need to get into the house written down.

    Ana2019-04-21T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay here. It was such a clean, stylish and cozy place. Mathew and Heather were both quite responsive and helpful. They handled perfectly the minor issue we had with bugs at their cottage.

    Farzaneh2019-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • This was a wonderful place to have a girl's weekend away. My friends and I live in Baltimore and we wanted to go somewhere away from the city and noise. This beautiful mountain cabin is hidden away, but definitely worth the drive. If you are looking for peace and quiet or away from the city--then this is the place to go. Heather made sure there was everything a person could need while on a trip from little bottles of commentary shampoos or soaps to a hand held mixer which was used to create a wonderful birthday cake. If you decide to stay here, you will not be disappointed. Thank you again!

    Jordan2019-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • A great place to stay. Quiet and remote and very comfortable. I highly recommend.

    Dan2019-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Heather's place was wonderful! It was actually much cuter than the pictures looked - the chairs are amazing and she has a great DVD collection. Overall we had a wonderful time . Just an FYI if you are using Google Maps it will likely tell you to go to the wrong house. Just go by the numbers on the mailbox (her mailbox and the one before hers are clearly labeled so if you don't see a number you are not in the right place). It was about three houses past the one the GPS took us to. Also you may want to bring a few jugs of water - the tap water didn't taste great and the Brita filter seemed a bit old. Water jugs are only a dollar at the dollar general down the road. I would definitely stay there again we had a great experience!

    Annie2019-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • The house is a bucolic secluded place to spend a relaxing weekend or few days. Bring your own food and you'll be so happy that you decided to stay here. Even in winter the hikes were magical and I can only imagine what they would be like in the summer.

This is a rustic stop-over hostel. There are 3 upper lofts in the barn. Open-air, fresh sleeping arrangements with double bed. Hot shower. Nice stop for road travelers or weekend city refugees. The barn serves at various times as a distillery producing whiskies, gin, and brandies. Sorry no heating or AC. There is hiking on the 29+ acres, a fishing pond, and nearby attractions. The Distillery offers free tastings and on-site sales of whiskey, gin, and other liquors.
There is one full size bed located at each corner loft. The barn itself is a shared space so not the most intimate setting but certainly the most fun. On the ground floor level of the barn is a shower in a separate bathroom toilet and sink. There is a shared open cooking area on the ground floor With a microwave and hot plate. There’s an outdoor fire pit and a barbecue grill.
This area is pretty much a food desert. Guess advice to bring in food and Beverages before they arrive. The closest store, a dollar general store, is about 4 to 5 miles.
  • If you're reading this, just go ahead and book a stay. You won't regret it. Stephen is a wonderful host and an all-around cool guy. We very much enjoyed our stay in the barn. The spirits were second-to-none and this little thirty acre piece of West Virginia is breathtakingly beautiful. I can't wait to come back and stay at one of the glamping sites.

    Josh2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • It's a great barn in a beautiful place. It's still a barn, not a Glambarn or anything, but it was real fun to spend the night in. I love West Virginia (not to be confused with regular Virginia)!

    Pavel2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • Great spot for an overnight stay! No frills (except Stephen's gracious hospitality and excellent bourbon), but a unique experience that's perfect when you need to get away from the hustle and bustle. Stephen is a wonderful host. I especially enjoyed the time he took to explain the distillery in detail. That was definitely an excellent perk! People should not walk in expecting this to be a hotel setting. It is exactly as described-- a loft, a shower (no lights), and a bathroom in a barn. There is no a/c, so a reminder to folks to plan accordingly. The day I went was quite warm, but it cooled off in the evening and was quite lovely. All in all, a great experience!

    Allison2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • 5 Stars I really enjoyed my stay at Stephens Home. It has a great view and a beautiful and clean area! Of course it can‘t be super clean, but I think that is clear understandable at the booking!

    Astrid2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • Stephens place was amazing ! It is a must stay for adventurers that love the outdoors ! Upon arrival we were greeted with a tasting of all of Stephan’s craft alcohol which were all delicious! The space is beautiful and we were able to explore the property and enjoy the stunning view from the barn. Stephen made our stay amazing and we enjoyed great conversation amongst the sounds the nature surrounding us . There is a grill and a fire pit to use as well ! We woke up to the fresh mountain air and tea and coffee .Showers and toilet are simple but great with hot water , if you can ,check out the outdoor shower ! Such a unique experience and a gem of a place , definitely recommend for a city escape or just to relax !

  • Our family loves and adores this place! If we aren't swimming in gorgeous spring feed lake or jumping off the dock, there's plenty of games/ books we borrow at the dining hall, trails to hike, berries to pick, and air hockey to play. Not to mention they added a delicious cafe on site in the dining hall. You really don't need to leave but if you must there are two great towns to explore nearby! They usually have someone playing music and set off amazing fireworks for the fourth of July! Two of the owners also offer massage (additional cost of course but sooo worth it) which I tried this visit by Barb and it was one of the best deep tissues I've ever had! Can't wait to come back!

  • This cabin is an excellent base from which to experience all that the Buffalo Gap Camp has to offer! Our family had stayed at one of the tent camping sites previously, and loved returning to play with the addition of a little extra comfort! The cabin had everything we needed to enjoy our stay and location within the camp was perfect - central to the beach, the mess hall, and the pavilion, with a great fire circle out front. Vincent, Barbara, and camp staff were all very responsive, and gave us quick answers, including about where we might find a good place in town to watch the World Cup match we didn’t want to miss! Our family is already eager for a return trip - thanks!

  • Our week stay at the Watercress Cabin at Buffalo Gap was wonderful and relaxing. The cabin had everything we need to prepare our meals. My 8 year old niece got to try her hand at kayaking in the pond. We had a campfire every evening and enjoyed exploring the grounds. Vince, Barbara and the onsite crew were friendly and helpful. Vince even helped us find a docent for the Ice Mountain hike. Buffalo Gap has lots to do onsite but also has easy access to the museums of Winchester and Cedar Creek Battlefield.

  • We have stayed at Buffalo Gap many times. We are always excited to see what new things they are doing. It is a great atmosphere that will help you relax. The scenery is gorgeous and there are lots of things to do there. Fish, swim go in the sauna, play corn hole or ladder ball, shoot some pool, walk the nature trails, or just relax on the beach, your choice. The great thing about all of this is that all the activities don't cost you anything extra. I highly recommend experiencing it for yourself. If you have been before go back and see all the changes they have made. the owners are great people who really want you to have a great time there. I will be back there again, more than likely this year if I can fit it in.

  • This was my first time in Capon Bridge. Aside from no cell service with AT&T, it was an amazing stay. We had a blast and love that it’s dog friendly.

  • This is our second trip to Buffalo Gap Retreat. The cabin was wonderful and spacious. I had amended my reservation to include my brother and his family a day before our visit with ease. There were eight of us in the cabin, 4 adults and 4 teens. We had enough space to move around and having 2 bathrooms was fantastic. The kitchen had all the needed utensils and appliances. We had a fantastic time sitting around the campfire. Our favorite part was the free wood for the fires. We also loved swimming and the use of kayaks on the water. The kids loved the various games in the gameroom. All in all I would give our stay a 10 and will return again.

  • Buffalo Gap Cottages is a great getaway for anyone who wants to relax and have a peaceful vacation. Great place for the kids to swim and fish at the lake that was on the property. Vince was a great host and was always available to answer any question or concerns that we might have. Would recommend Buffalo Gap to anyone who wants a great getaway.

  • Great to see such a labor of love in the refurbishing of Buffalo Gap Retreat--a place where we used to dance at Almost Heaven and Savoy Swings dance camps. The pavilion is as sweet a place to dance as always. Remodeled and updated cabins, café make the stay very nice.

  • It is a nice place to do things outside like hiking, corn hole, basketball court, swimming in the lake. I would suggest to get there a bit early in the day so you can explore so see where things are so you know where things are. The shower in the cabin is cold water only there is hot water one but it's located in a different spot. Also there are no air-conditioning in the cabins so the get hot in the day. They are adding some in other not in the one we stayed. This would be a great place to stay in the Fall or Spring. It does have grilling area and fire pit for you that are nice bring you grilling tools and lighter fluid. In the summer it's nicer to cook outside to keep the heat down in the cabin.

  • A small quaint world of its own about a quick 5 mile drive along a clear looking stream from the town of Capon Bridge, WV. Be sure to follow the driving directions carefully, so you don't miss any turns especially when driving up after sundown. Buffalo Gap Retreat is surprisingly well maintained and naturally preserved to make it a true 'among the woods' experience. Though we were there only for the night, the cottage was clean, cozy and convenient to use. I recommend staying here for at least two nights and a day to fully take advantage of the awesome recreational activities on-site. Perfect for the Fall months, to take in the colors, soak in the sun and breathe in some crisp mountain air.

  • The cabin we chose did not have ac or a tv, but we wanted to get away and was there at the time we liked the windows open and listen to the wildlife. The cabin had all the basic essentials needed, the gem is the property, sauna, lake, cafe and trails and so much more. The people there go above and beyond, to ensure that everything is in order and just a wonderful escape from a hectic work week in the city. They also enforce quiet hours between 10 PM to 8 AM. Also, if you own more than two dogs it is difficult to find a place to stay and this place was amazing, lots of places to walk the dogs and let them sniff around and stretch out. Definitely would recommend this place.

    Marie2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome place to chill, slow down and be in nature. The lake is perfect for kids and the scenery is beautiful. The only disappointment was the cafe was not open.

    Sarah2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • This place was very relaxing and we loved the beach. Perfect for our whole family. The kids and I relaxed on the beach and splashed in the water while my husband fished. Highly recommend! We will definitely be back!

  • This was the first time been there so wasn't sure what to expect. It was a beautiful setting, although the weather the best rainy and cool so we didn't get to enjoy a lot of the activities but we can't control the weather. We all had a wonderful time!! The fire pit, grill...was an added bonus. I highly recommend it if you enjoy the great outdoors! We had one of the two bedrooms, two bath cottages--The Laurel and me up to everyones expectations. Thanks Again, Chet

  • Great week-end gate away very close to DC took us about 2.5 hrs. Vincent was very nice and answered any questions I had right away. Very hidden location, the cabins really has everything you need to cook and prepared your meals (plates, pots, coffee marker, toaster oven, utensils, mini fridge, and much more than what I expected.). Also they just opened a cafe on-site for sandwiches, salads, and fruit smoothies, coffee was very good.

ALL are WELCOME to invigorate your spirit and refill the soul on our majestic property (170 acres) situated in the rugged and vast mountains of West Virginia. This cozy cabin is fairly new, very clean and has a basic kitchen set-up, bathroom, heat/AC unit. I also provide an outdoor cooking area, charcoal BBQ and picnic table. A fishing pond, 7 miles of trails for hiking with 60+ nature signs to describe the surrounding environment.
This place is a gem for couples or soloists who like to relax, adventure and learn about nature without having to venture to a State Park. With 7 miles of cleared trails, hiking is made safe through the lush woods of West Virginia. Nature signs adorn the edges along our main .6 mile NATURE trail, so learning is fun and easy. (we have maps of all trails on our property). We have full river access 1.2 miles away on a private island (access is dependent upon river level). The catch and release stocked pond is for the hobby fisherman or beginner. Loaded with small mouth bass, big cat fish, crappie, and our mascot - 1 older Coy fish, fish are jumping! When you’re done fishing, scoot around the pond in our cool paddle boat. Corn hole, a horse shoe pit, a bonfire in our giant steel fire pit, off road mountain biking, pond and river swimming, or just old fashioned bird/nature watching are on the list of activities you can plan for the multiple days spending recharging your batteries. The small kitchen is stocked with basic cooking needs, spices, oils and lots of utensils, pan options and YES, a cast iron skillet is on the list. Feel free trying your hand in cooking in our outdoor fire pit. We include coffee and tea and offer a few frozen items for sale like local sausage, ground beef. Please understand this property is large, vast, you can get lost. It's possible for even seasoned hikers to tire, so please come prepared to make the most of your experience. It's our goal to provide you with a most positive outdoor nature adventure. Come spend quality time alone, or with your loved ones, family and friends. We also host retreats, smaller family reunions and small outdoor events. I have 25 years experience in restaurants, catering, serving and preparing food. I’m comfortable with different scenarios, romantic dinner for with two, wild mushroom risotto and a chilled bottle of Viognier or a bbq for the kids. I have great sources for local meat and veggies and can prepare a feast for the seasons. Owner is not responsible for ANY accidents. Damage caused by guests will be quickly reported. Alcohol can impair personal judgement and the ability to make rational decisions. We are NOT responsible for accidents resulting from negligence. Drinking alcohol under age will not be tolerated. • A very unique and gorgeous hideaway. Easily one of my favorite spots I've found on AirBnB. Couldn't recommend it more!

  • My other half and I were looking for a quick weekend getaway to the hills of West Virginia (which we love) and have stayed many different places, but Timo's place was one of our favorites! They not only have a beautiful location, but it is quiet and tucked back away from everything and they go out of their way to add personal touches and flairs to everything. You won't be disappointed by this place, I promise!

    Kaci2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Highly recommended! My husband and I came here to spend our first few days as husband and wife. We couldn’t have found a better place!

  • What an awesome escape. The hosts were very accommodating to book us on a last minute weekend trip and from the moment we arrived we already knew we wished we had more time there! The cabin itself was not only visually appealing, but so thoughtfully stocked. The property has so much beautiful hiking (that is VERY well marked!) and a wonderful nature trail complete with placards!!! We didn't even come close to using all of the fun things Timo and Courtney's place had to offer, but here's out short list: Hiking, Camp fires, grilling, darts, axe throwing, arts and crafts! The cabin had wifi, which was a huge plus and not common for such wonderful remote stays. We also really liked the accessible bathrooms that were outside the cabin. Our dog Asher, also had the time of his life! Thanks again.

    Amanda2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • If you are looking for a place to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle of life...this is the place! The cabin is amazing, but the outdoors is really what made this trip memorable. Unwind on the beach by the pond, hike the trails, or enjoy just floating in the river. We took this trip as a “prewedding get-a-way” and it was beyond relaxing, you can almost forget about everything else when you’re just enjoying this little paradise!

    Jacob2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to come and relax! Quiet space with a lake and hiking trails. Great having the host on the property for random questions but complete privacy. Highly recommend to anyone looking to get away for a few nights.

  • The place was nice. I wasn't expecting the steep slope to the cabin, but it was not problem. The kitchen cabin was great. Everyone had fun in the lake with the kayaks, canoes, floaties, and playing volleyball. It was nice to be somewhere where we did not have to leave the site for anything. Everyone who went with me thought it was really fun and they all want to go back!

  • Rustic cabin stay, reminded me of a summer camp...which it was back in the 60's I think! The spring fed lake was clean, had kayaks, volleyball, etc. There's a large pavilion with other games to play. Fire pit & grills ready to use. Plenty of seating. Fantastic place in the mountains to really get away from everything. Note that quite a bit of hills with no ramps, no reception or wifi, so it's a nice way to force everyone off their devices. The view of the mountains was spectacular!
