Places to stay in Lamu County
Due to Corona restrictions we are blocking all reservations until August. During this time we'll add a new floor to separate eating and lounging areas. Me and my family stays here around two months a year. Two adults, one toddler and one four-year-old at the last visit. Kahindi takes care of laundry, shopping, cooking and more. He stays at the ground floor and has been helping out since the house was built.
The main space on the 2nd floor almost always gets some breeze. This is where we spend most of our time, where we eat and relax on sofas or mattresses. This floor has a gate that can be closed for toddler security. Putting a few harder pillows together will also prevent toddlers from trying to get to the rooftop. The kitchen is just next to the dining area. It has a gas cooker, a fridge/ freezer, blender, toaster and all cooking utensils required. There is one bedroom on each floor and they are more or less identical. 6x7 feet bed, adjacent bathroom with shower, shelves and hangers. The main space on the first floor has a desk, two daybeds and an additional smaller bed suitable for older children or an adult. The rooftop is mainly used for drying of clothes but can also be used for stargazing. There are plenty of books (most in Swedish, some in English), children's toys and toddlers chair for eating. There is also a toddler bed that can be places under the mosquito net in any of the two bedrooms.
Between Banana House and the Shela dispensary (free consultations and drugs; if needed ) and next door to a small shop with the basics.
  • The open air space proved perfect for sunset drinks, card games, and afternoon reading, but the true standout were the meals cooked for us by the caretaker. Everything felt taken care of, and the stay was incredible.

  • We had a wonderful stay. Kahindi is a great cook and cares a lot. Only the noisy neighbors are annoying at times.

  • Had a wonderful stay. Jonas was very responsive and helpful with the booking and the house was immaculate and a lovely space. Kahindi was such a lovely man and really looked after us while we were there, every morning he provided us with a wonderful breakfast, the fresh fruit and fresh juice were particularly appreciated. The house is a short walk through the village to the beach but I personally particularly liked that as it meant you could absorb some of the village life and culture. The humdrum of the village in the morning and evening were for me a delight. Overall a wonderful stay and I will definitely be back again in the future! Thank you Jonas and Kahindi.....

  • one of the best Airbnb ever!!!

  • Jonas’ home is beautiful! We met Kahindi at the dock to go to the place, we were so grateful to have him there to help us plan things and he also for a small fee made us breakfast each morning and a delicious dinner one night. Really pay attention to the path because there are so many winding paths and they all look the same, we got lost a lot but it always led to new discoveries so it wasn’t too bad. I would highly recommend this place.

  • Lovely house to relax in and perfectly situated in Lamu. Stayed here two adults and a toddler and it worked out great. Highly recommend it.

  • We had a great time here! Amazing home with an even more amazing host and cook!!! Kahindi, the cook, is an absolute gem and took great care of our family, including our little baby. He happily provided a crib and high chair, clean up her mess after eating, entertained our little one and put up with having to step over/around child proof barriers. The food was absolutely incredible every single meal. Kahindi was discrete and made sure to keep the house sparkling clean. We highly recommend Jonas's place to anyone coming to Shella beach! Thanks again for a great stay!

  • Jonas’s place is a perfect place to stay as you discover Lamu and Shella. Very close to the beach and other shops and restaurants. A peaceful place with a great cook available.

Due to the circumstances our property is regularly sanitized by professional cleaners and is perfect for isolation if you wish to do so. We are YourHost, a professional management company and our standards require the highest cleanliness at all times. All cleaners are required to clean all surfaces and handles with soap or sanitizer thoroughly after every single cleaning session. We will also provide sanitizing spray for every space With the support of our cleaners and full-time staff all areas are being sanitized regularly and hand sanitizers are available to our spaces.
The Honeymoon Studio is the extension of Shela's beach architectural landmark, The Honeymoon House. With its own private entrance and access to the sandy beach, this guest suite is uniquely designed to offer only the best experience to our guests. Enjoy jaw-dropping views of the island while lying in bed, and the best cooking experience from our chef, Tony. Our guest manager, Jackson, is always around to make your stay memorable. Don't forget to arrange a of day sailing with our Mozambican Lamu Dhow boat, where you can enjoy sundowners and explore the Indian Ocean.
The neighbourhood is part of a historical landmark and very safe to walk around. You can always ask for our askari at the main gate to accompany you should you like to walk by the secluded side of the beach evening hours.
  • This is no ordinary air bnb experience. The quality of the studio and the service were better than some 5 star hotels we have stayed in. The room itself is stunning with the biggest bed I’ve ever seen, and gorgeous interior design touches. We did experience power cuts but I would stress that these affect the whole island, it is not an issue with this house. While the power was off We swung open the windows and let the trade winds in, had bucket showers and dined by candlelight- it was dreamy. The house is managed impeccably and comes with a waiter/housekeeper and a chef who not only provided the best meals we have had in our 3 month trip (he called the fishermen direct from our breakfast table so we could have exactly the fresh seafood we wanted) but really provided 5 star service throughout. The house was cleaned every day so was spotless and our dining table was set beautifully for every meal in the gorgeous dunes just in front of the studio (the photos do not do this justice, it’s a magical setting) The beach is a 2 min walk down the dunes and the maze of Shela streets 2 mins in the other direction. It really was paradise and we would book again in a heartbeat

    Hannah2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • This AirBnB is an amazing find. It's quiet and off the beaten path. The bed is gigantic. There's A/C! And one of the best hangout spots, Peponi is only steps away. If you have the opportunity, have the staff cook prepare you a meal (you cover the cost of food, etc.). We had him prepare goat for us one night and seafood the next. Both were absolutely incredible. The outside dining area is beautiful and during the day you can watch birds fly about or even see a monkey or two (one even stole a banana from me!) :) One quick tip: If you like to have wine/beer/spirits with your meal it can be hard to find on the island as many of the residents are religious. That said, you can easily pack a few bottles from the mainland without issue, even if you're flying in. Our only issue was that the wifi was spotty at times (as it can be throughout Africa), but that didn't really affect us as we were too busy swimming/snorkeling/hanging on the beach. If you have the opportunity to stay here you won't regret it.

  • Honeymoon studio is amazing! It has a great location on top of the dunes, but an easy walk to Peponi, town, and the beach. The studio is very comfortable with wonderful a/c, a huge bed, and everything you may need. When we stayed at the studio, no-one was staying in the house, so we were able to access the pool. The pool was amazing; large, clean, stylish, beach beds laid out, and a bathroom available. The best part of the stay, though, was the staff. I've stayed at many luxury hotels, camps, and villas in Kenya and this is the best service I've had in the country. Jackson and his team are incredible! Meals are ready right on time, someone is always around (but not intruding) to make sure you have everything you need, and they generally go above and beyond. We left a baby cot at the pool and when we returned in the evening, we saw it had magically been brought upstairs and put back in place. The chef also heard that our baby liked the mango, so the next day at breakfast he put an extra mango on the plate, just for her. I also recommend eating at the studio as the food as very reasonably priced and delicious. I can't praise the staff (and chef) enough! This was a very good place to book in Lamu for the cost. Highly recommend!

  • Great place, in the best location with friendly staff and an outstanding cook

  • We had a great time staying here while in Lamu. Jackson and the entire team of staff were fantastic. They were able to advise on things to do and connect us with guides for various activities around Shela and Lamu town. Breakfast was delicious and we ended up utilizing the in-house chef for other meals -- they were all amazing. The beach is a 4 min walk from the house. I highly recommend staying here while visiting Shela and we plan to come back again!

  • Ivor’s 2 bedroom apartment was very spacious and in an excellent location. The view is spectacular of Lamu/water and excellent sunrises. We stayed 3 nights and wished we stayed longer. When we were there was an excellent breeze from the water that the apartment was very comfortable for temperature. We were picked up at the airport and dropped off at the airport. His staff were great, they were on time and helped us with our bags. Everyone involved was very friendly. We really enjoyed the location as walkable to Shelah beach or you can take a boat. There is a great restaurant a block away called Mangrove … we ate there breakfast and dinner everyday ( say Hi to Janet ! Lots of locals eating at Magroves and local prices ). This apartment is great value. This apartment could fit 6 people if needed. If you have mobility issues it might be difficult to walk up the 3 flights of stairs to the apartment. Ivors was by far the best accommodation we had in Kenya and Tanzania. Hope to return again. Thank you !

  • The apt. I'd booked had a plumbing issue so Ivor put me up at Palm Park, another one of his properties. It is a beautiful place, just on the edge if Lamu, a pleasant walk to Shelah. There's a pool, common seating area, and fantastic staff. The room itself had great mossie nets, a lovely private patio (complete w/ day bed) and very comfy beds. The kitchen was well stocked, the decor was lovely, and the general ambiance was very welcoming.id like to give a shout out to Daniel & Boniface: Thank you.

  • This place in the middle of Lamu town is really beautiful. You reach the jetty within one minute and find great local restaurants around. The view from the balcony is amazing, and waking up for sunrise is more than worth it! Ivor is a great host and all the time reachable. We really enjoyed the service of being picked up and bright back from the airport. We would always come back!

  • This is one of my favourite places in Lamu town. It is conveniently located near shops, restaurants and the market and while Lamu's narrow streets can be confusing, this place is easy to find. The host is great and keeps communication quick, helpful and open. He helped me arrange for a boat with an awesome captain (Jay), who took me to the Takwa ruins and showed me the best beaches around. I had a great and memorable time and will return again. Thanks Ivor for your hospitality.

    Jacqui2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay. Up 3 flights of stairs. Decent view and very close to the local market. Just out the door and to the right. Very nice.

Amu House is a fully restored 16th century Swahili house with 7 comfortable, self contained guest rooms each with its own veranda on the two upper floors. We serve a full breakfast downstairs in the historic original Swahili house, and have a beautiful breezy rooftop with a hammock and day beds for all our guests to enjoy. Conveniently located just a minute's walk from the jetty and the seafront, Amu House is perfectly situated. A quiet, private home in the middle of a historic paradise!
Amu House on Lamu Island is located off the coast of Northern Kenya. The breezes of the Indian Ocean and the islands of the Lamu Archipelago offer many beautiful places to visit. Sailing is a big part of our culture, and we recommend that our guests explore the area by land as well as by sea. Perhaps a simple day trip to one of our incredible nearby beaches may be the perfect way to relax on your holiday. Or take a sailing trip to snorkel and/or fish with lunch included; enjoy a beautiful sunset cruise with drumming and singing on board, or take the time to explore the nearby islands as we can take you on a variety of exciting sea adventures! And if you prefer to stay on land, relaxing on the rooftop and enjoying the breezes in the hammock may be the perfect way to spend your afternoon after getting "lost" in the maze of Lamu's streets. With no cars or vehicles, only donkeys for transport, spend the morning winding through our historic town, stumbling across pieces of an ancient culture meeting the modern day. Lamu Town is a place history can come alive in your imagination. Feel the ancient times that passed by.
Lamu Island is a historic trading center dating back to the 9th Century. Amu House is a traditional Swahili house dating from the 16th century, located in the heart of Old Town. Just a minute walk to the seafront, with channel views from the rooftop, Amu House provides a perfect place to start exploring this beautiful historic area. Come join us!
  • Fantastic bed and breakfast in Lamu town, only a few alleys back from the waterfront (easy to locate). The room was clean and comfortable, with a high powered ceiling fan that kept us cool at night even though the nets. This house has so many Swahili architectural touches! That alone is worth the stay. But the breakfast was fantastic! Our host offered either an English or Swahili breakfast--get the Swahili. It was plenty of delicious food. Finally, everyone was very friendly and helpful. I would gladly stay here again.

    Tina2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Very kind staff Hotel in historic city Context very strong city Lamu .... for me to see The beaches can be reached comfortably with small boats. Accommodation is simple as described.

    Giuliana2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • I really enjoyed my stay at Amu house. I especially loved the Swahili breakfast and fresh juices served in the morning. I loved the cleanliness and eco friendliness of the place and how much thought was put into the overall decor of the house. Hammerton and Bakari were really helpful with information and errands and I don’t have any regrets booking Amu House. Well done!

    Emmanuel2019-12-17T00:00:00Z
  • Amu house is beautiful! Great location, the manager on staff was very friendly and the breakfast was great. Overall, a great place and a great value! As other reviewers said, it is close to a mosque so be prepared for that, and other noises in the alley, which is to be expected in Lamu. We had a problem on our first night in which the power went out which made it quite uncomfortable given the heat. The host had an electrician there the next morning, yet unfortunately it was not getting repaired in time so we had to switch Airbnbs. The host was communicating very quickly with us during the ordeal. This problem seemed to be isolated though, so should the opportunity arise, we would for sure consider this place again!

  • Great location and very comfortable

    Nick2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • My fiance and I absolutely loved our time at Amu House. Bakari and Hamilton were wonderful hosts, and the house is lovely. We live in Nairobi, and Lamu is such a nice escape from the bustle of Kasarani. Breakfast was lovely, the location perfect, the locals so friendly. It was a pleasure all around. We'll be back!

    Carla2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect location and safe. I'm glad that we get a key so that we can come back to the place whenever we would like. They were very flexible with me--i would come down for breakfast late everyday but I was always accommodated. I loved the recommendations from bakari on places to go and do. The architecture and decor is absolutely beautiful. My only recommendation would be that the hosts add near to the breakfast options but otherwise I would 100% stay again.

  • Bembea House is out of this world. Cecilia and her team are amazing and we could not have had a better stay in Shela. The house is in a great location just behind Peponi Hotel and a 2 minute walk from the beach. Sammy and Jackson were amazing hosts and cooked up the most amazing meals. Cecilia arranged our boat transfer from the airport to Shela and Nasir then helped us coordinate booking all our boat/snorkelling/sundowner activities. We’ll definitely be back and couldn’t recommend a stay here more highly.

    Harriet2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • In all aspects Bembea house is exquisite. In terms of location, it is within a stone's throw from anything you might need.. Restaurants, curio shops or the beach. It's also super easy to find in the maze of back alleys that make up Shela. The house itself is a stylish getaway, the absolute epitome of 'Swahili chic', with a curated personal touches. It's filled with beautiful art pieces and every amenity you would ever need. Sammy and Johnson prepared our lovely meals daily (optional) and were always available to give hints and tips to maximize your stay. This place is 100% recommended.

  • This stay is an amazing find and value! I cannot get over how perfect this place is. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Pictures really do not do this place justice! Don't over think things just book it!

    Erik2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • Cecilia was an accommodating and responsive host, ready to assist even with last minute changes. The house is really great. Visiting Shela is always special but this was by far the best trip. While it is only a stone’s throw from Peponi, there was really no need to go so often as the living area was wonderful to spend the afternoon, and the rooftop terrace a great vista to enjoy sundowners. Most of all, I don’t think the hospitality and stay would have been the same without Sammy and Johnson. Highly recommended.

    Danie2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • This is a gorgeous house near the oceanfront. I would highly recommend staying here as the staff are very friendly, Johnson is a great cook, and you are well looked after. The house is very stylish, probably the most stylish that I have seen yet in Lamu and there are small touches around the house! Because it is not by the oceanfront, it can get hot--but that is Lamu Island! I would definitely come back here. Cecilia is a great hostess and immediately responded to all our requests. Thank you!

    Maha2019-12-16T00:00:00Z

    Eliot2020-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • This is an absolutely amazing accommodation. It was beautiful, spacious and the pool area was quite breathtaking, so cool and refreshing after a day through the town. Only thing to note is that you will hear the mosque nearby in the early morning.

  • The location is in a very conservative section of Lamu. One must keep this in mind as a visitor. If you want quick beach access then this site might not be for you. The location is for those with some adventure and quest for some local flavor. The beach is 15 min by boat or 40 by foot. David was great in helping arrange what we needed.

    Samuel2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • This is really a Swahili Dream come true. You will not be disappointed staying here! Wonderfully furnished and decorated, a super friendly host’s helper in David who helps out with all your questions and needs. I am filled with gratefulness!!

  • It's value for money

  • Swahili Dreams is a fantastic small hotel. we had the place mostly to ourselves, just before the high tourist season began. The location is fantastic, in the middle of Lamu town with quick access to restaurants and boats to take you around Lamu. We had a suite of sorts of with two rooms. Each room was beautiful and well decorated. We lounged about the sitting room for much of our first day. Lamu is quite warm so it was nice to just rest. I would highly recommend a stay here for anyone visiting Lamu.

    Abiosseh2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • The apartment was lovely. We had a flawless check-in, David was very hospitable and helped with our luggage too. The space was comfortable and it was easy access to where we wanted to visit. The shared pool was the highlight and absolutely perfect after a hot day walking around Lamu. We had a great stay! Thanks!

  • Outstanding home and the BEST hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The home is amazing and between Brian (the owner) and Moses (the caretaker) we were in the best of hands. Communication was excellent, check-in a breeze, the home is beautiful and Moses is the BEST. Highly recommend for anyone who stays to allow Moses to cook dinner for you. He is an outstanding chef! Many thanks for the life long memory on Lamu!

  • Brilliant place to explore Lamu from, the roof terrace is wonderful!

    Harriet2019-12-21T00:00:00Z
  • Brians house is a gem! The interior is charming, elegant and very clean. We had 3 unforgettable days at the Samaki house especially because of Moses great service, delicious breakfast and a lovely view from the house. Thank you very much!

    Leonard2019-11-07T00:00:00Z
  • Brian's wonderful house is in the heart of lamu. Its a beautifully restored traditional lamu house, complete with a huge comfortable lamu bed in the master bedroom. Yes...the imam's call for prayer is at 5am, and somebody get that poor donkey a wife next door ;)....but for us it made us feel more connected. And lastly...Moses is a gem. And I will miss those mornings at breakfast where we shared laughs. We will def be baaaack.... :)

    Blain2019-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed in the double room and the space is just amazing. Big bedroom with a relaxing area, nice big bathroom and some outside space. The rest of of the communal areas of the house are just as impressive. And our host at the house, Moses, was just an absolute star: the most accommodating, helpful, polite and personable individual you could imagine. If you want to stay in Lamu old town as opposed to Shela (it’s worth researching this first) then I couldn’t recommend the place, and especially Moses, high enough.

  • Great room in a historic building convenient for sightseeing in Lamu town. Easy access to other beaches in Shela/Manda etc. Excellent communication from our host

    Matthew2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • Brian's place is fantastic - we made good use of the large terraces overlooking the sea and the town. We also booked a dhow trip with a captain Moses knew and would definitely recommend him to others. The house is in a great location within lamu Town but offers an excellent place to escape the busy streets.

  • This house was amazing. Very pretty and good value for money to stay in a swahili house. Moses was available and helpful.

  • The highlight of our stay in Lamu was this house! Great location, beautiful design and kind hospitality. Will definitely be back!

  • Andavelo House is a beautiful property in Lamu Town (~5 minute walk from the seafront) but away from the noise. A kind of oasis after a long day of doing all the things. Safari and Johnson were great and super hospitable. One of my highlights was a lovely Crab dinner that was cooked up for my friends and I on short notice. After seeing the place they actually decided to switch hotels and come stay there. Definitely recommend and hope to come back!

  • This is an absolute gem of a place if you want to stay in Old town of Lamu. It is not just the incredible building but the hospitality and small touches like the drinks on arrival and water always 'magically' being refilled in in your room. It really is an oasis within Lamu old town.

    Laurence2019-11-19T00:00:00Z
  • I had a great time in Lamu! The house was perfect, the room spacious. Safari, Abu and Johnson were welcoming and always available to help. David is reactive. And the breakfast was good :-) I highly recommend.

    Angelique2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • Andress and the other staff were great hosts. His place is located in the middle of the old town and you can reach everything within a 5-min walk. The place was very uniqe and had a peaceful atmosphere. We would really recommend!

  • The most beautiful house I have ever seen/stayed. My boyfriend and I were genuinely gasping as we were shown around as the photos do not do it justice. Our room was so incredible and the stay was divine. Safari and the team are so helpful. Would love to come back.

Pumbao House is a stunning villa located 2 minutes away from the beach in the beautiful village of Shela, Lamu Island, Kenya. It features a private swimming pool with a fountain in a cool and shady yard and breathtaking sea views from the upper terrace. This house has been decorated with local art and furniture. Pumbao House can welcome up to ten people with its 5 bedrooms. The steward Sylvester & the cook Mwembe will welcome you, cook delicious dishes, keep the house clean and do your laundry.
Pumbao House is perfect for holidays or a week-end.
In Shela, you can enjoy the 18km beautiful beach, practice windsurf, bodyboard, waterski, wakeboard and other water sports, and enjoy the different restaurants located on the waterfront. You can easily take a boat to go and visit Lamu city, the capital of the island and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites listing. From Shela, you can also walk (3-4 hours) to the Kipungani camp located at the end of the beach, have lunch there and come back with a traditional swahili sail boat, a dhow. Shela is also a great location to travel to the islands around: Manda (visit the Takua ruins and hike back to the beach), Kiwayu (an amazing island), Kinika (a coral island on the coral barrier, where you can enjoy snorkling), or even to the mainland (to have a one day safari and see hippopotamus and other animals).
  • A stylish and comfortable space in the heart of Shela. We thoroughly enjoyed the week we spent in Pumbao house and cannot recommend it highly enough. The house is beautiful, airy, comfortable and full of interesting art pieces and cool shady spaces where you can sit and gaze out over the ocean or the rooftops of Shela. We loved being so close to the beach, but also enjoyed being within the village, with the donkeys trotting up and down the lane and the sound of the muezzin calling out from the local mosque. The pool was a real asset too, and the rooftop terrace was enjoyed by all as we sat out and had sundowners under the stars each evening. The staff in the house were fantastic and took care of our every need, doing all the shopping and preparing delicious sea food dinners for us each evening. Definitely a very magical place and somewhere we would love to return to!

  • We could not have had a better experience In the stunning Lamu home on Shela Island. Perfect for our party of 10, very spacious with open air feeling and even with hot weather there was always a breeze flowing through the house. Mwembe and Sylvester were beyond hospitable and the attention to detail and above and beyond service made our stay very special. We asked them to bake a birthday cake and help us obtain spec oak ingredients for our USA Thanksgiving feast and allowed us to cook along side them in the kitchen. Whatever we wanted/needed they were making it happen. The location of the house was so convenient with stunning views with nice shops within walking distance. The swimming/cooling pool was so welcome and always kept clean. We loved our stay and hope to be back one day. Thank you Angelika for All of your kind support during the planning process and for the kind greeting and briefing. You have an amazing home. This group of 20 somethings was so impressed and fortunate to experience Lamu from your home.

  • Huge place, where every room has individual space and access to ocean views. Very central to Shela, and less than a minute walk to the beach. The host and every one of the staff were friendly, effective, and all around exceptional: the highest quality food, a hot tip to see baby sea turtles hatching at a nearby beach, constant cleanliness. Will be looking to stay here again.

    Andrew2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • Pumbao House is incredibly located, steps from Peponi Hotel and the beach. Mwembe and Sylvester are wonderful hosts, make incredible seafood feasts, and are very sweet. Highly recommended!

  • This accommodation far exceeded our expectations. The house is wonderful, with all the luxury of decoration details, wonderful. Shela's area is safe and very pretty. The staff of the house is amazing, with a magnificent smile and willing to always help us in everything. We hope to return soon. Without a doubt it is a wonderful experience on the island of Lamu.

  • Zahir House is a fantastic house. It's got an incredible roof with views across Lamu and the channel - it's one of the tallest in Shela, and awesome to have drinks overlooking the water. The pool on the ground floor is super refreshing, and there are loads of great hang-out and dining areas for groups. Two bedrooms are particularly excellent, but even the smaller ones have AC. The team were truly excellent - super helpful and friendly. We'd stay again for sure. Thank you!

  • Zahir's house is beautiful. It's airy and well decorated, and the pictures on the site don't do it justice. Her team need a special mention. They are so wonderful and helpful. The food was divine. We were so tempted to stay a few extra nights. We had an amazing time, and we will definitely be back! Thank you for everything Chantal!

  • Very nice house with attentive staff. The design is gorgeous and the pool very refreshing after the walk back from the beach or town. I would recommend it without any doubt.

  • Zahir house is an amazing place. It exceeded all my expectations. The house is beautiful. The staff are amazing and so helpful. Our stay was nothing short of spectacular. My friends and I enjoyed Zahir house and Lamu. Chantal is the best host.

  • My friends and I completely loved Chantal's house. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back here when in Lamu. We were pleasantly surprised that the the pictures on the Website don't do it enough justice because the house was so spacious and comfortable for our group of 9. The house staff is amazing! They were so kind and helpful even going out of their way to source for items we needed, and, the chef makes the best meals on the island! Trust me you will fall in love with Zahir house :-) Regards Charity.

  • Chantal’s house is absolutely amazing! I stayed there with 8 friends, and we all had an incredible time. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The meals were so good that we decided to stay in instead of going out to a restaurant. The house is gorgeous and a great value. Thank you Chantal and team! We had a lovely time and would highly recommend!

  • Zahir House is breathtaking and beyond amazing. Our stay at Zahir house was a great experience. The staff are beyond accommodating it felt like family away from home. The food prepared was delish, the swimming pool was the icing on the cake. The location is perfect and we utilized the hosts contacts for outdoor activities. Chantal was always responsive and accommodating. Am glad that my first time in Lamu was spent at Zahir House. Thanks Chantal

    Val2019-06-03T00:00:00Z
  • Beyond brilliant. The house is huge so great for groups. Two of the double rooms have their own floor! We were able to hang as a group and also sit quietly and read books. The plunge pool was a refreshing addition. The food is incredible. We, in particular, loved the prawn curry and the mango crumble with coconut cream. The team working at Zahir house were amazing, a polished helpful, friendly y am that run a ‘tight ship’. We couldn’t think of anything that would need to be improved (I made everyone try to think of something and we all agreed it was just brilliant and we would change nothing).

  • With Ivor’s places - what you see, YOU GET MORE! With the limitations of Lamu - this place is a hidden treasure, the caretakers were all very friendly and on hand to guide on each and every need we had. The place is very quiet, organized and unbelievably located in the center of town. For the rate that was charged - this was worth each single penny

  • Very spacious penthouse apartment with all the basic amenities one would need for their stay in paradise. Centrally located in Lamu Old town so you can locate the place as you get off the boat. Super responsive and invested host who goes all out for his guests - he's literally a text away. Also easy access for day trips around the neighbouring islands/beaches as well. Really liked the touch of organised airport transfers - would definitely come back here again.

  • Staying here was like time traveling into the Swahili cultural universe- magical. This place is crazy convenient; they pick you up from the airstrip in a dhow. The place is less than a minute walk from the jetty. The views are spectacular;- I got to enjoy a beautiful sunrise. The authenticity is out of this world. My bed was crazy comfortable, I loved the Swahili cultural touches around the room. I loved that I could walk to every place I wanted to go. Boniface was a joy. Would definitely stay again.

  • Amazing place roughly halfway between Lamu and Shela. The pool was great and the place was setup well. The only issue was the fan in the master bedroom overheats so we couldn’t run it at night which made it a bit warm. There was also to few kitchen amenities to be a truly self sufficient Airbnb. Overall a great place and location we’d happily stay at again!

  • Homely and good service. Ivor is very easy to communicate and always response very quickly. Caretakers(Safari and Daniel) in the compound are very nice. Swimming pool is great for children, easy walking to Lamu Town and Shela.Great for family vocation.

  • Palm Park offers extremely good value for money. The apartment and grounds were well maintained and the staff very welcoming and friendly. Having the airport transfers arranged for us great and Safari and Bonface helped arrange water taxis for us on multiple occasions, as well as organising a dhow and fishing trip. Both Lamu and Shela are within walking distance, although its more pleasant to get a water taxi given the heat of the sun! Lamu Island as a whole is a fantastic, unspoiled destination. The people are welcoming and keen for visitors to enjoy their stay so that word will spread about it being a great place to stay. We really enjoyed our time there.

My place is close to Friday Mosque, UNESCO historic sites, the beach and gift shops.. You’ll love my place because of the seafront atmosphere, the privacy, close proximity banks/ATMs, supermarkets, in-house chef and welcoming staff.. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, and families (with kids).
Faraha House provides guests with a secured apartment that comes with rooftop access, an ocean view balcony, one bathroom and an airy room with king sized bed and mosquito net. There is also an adjustable ceiling fan for humid days and nights.
Shela Village is a lovely quiet place - just about 800 people live in the village and after a short period you will feel part of the community. The community is primarily muslim, therefore we encourage our guests to respect their ways of living as well as the day to day traditions. You need to experience walking about in the village, there are no real roads so everything is on foot in small valleys - We recommend our guests to spend time on both Manda and Shela beaches, a Lamu Town Visit, Dhow Sundowner trip, fishing trips, a trip to the Takwa ruins
  • We really enjoyed our stay. Had the whole house to ourselves and a huge swahili bed! Nyama the housekeeper was very helpful. The kitchen could be cleaner and better organized (two rings instead of one) but it was all good. Amazing location and view - beautiful breeze!

  • We overall spent a very nice week at furaha house. The room is small and simple but the terrasse on the roof top is amazing. Nyama prepared very nice breakfast and dinner for us and was helpful for organizational stuff. Only negative point : the mosquito net having several holes is not so effective anymore.

    Elodie2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • TL;DR: Highly recommended! The place was spectacular!!! It was more so because we hadn't really had Shela on our list and so the whole area surprised us pleasantly. We booked same day (within 2 hours of check-in) and had a quick turnaround of directions etc from Hamid. Nyama, who received us and showed us around, was great and prepared amazing meals for us! We didn't see many restaurants around so getting Nyama to cook was a tremendous value-add(disclaimer: we only stayed 1 day). I recommend Peponi Hotel next door for drinks and if you are into running, there's a Manda island Airbnb running Experience that allowed us to visit Manda island right before our flight back to city.

  • A great place in Lamu town, between the UNESCO World Heritage Lamu Old Town and the seaside. The furniture is antique and gives the place a great atmosphere, most rooms are open and the roof top terrace is the most amazing place for star gazing at night - especially if there are power outages in Lamu, in which case we had petroleum lamps which (needless to say) made it feel yet more comfy and cosy. Communication with Abdalla, the housekeeper, and a local captain who picked us up from the airport was great, the captain also offers sailing tours and helped us with anything from food to an ATM. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back! Thanks a lot.

  • Chris' place is amazing. Near to the beach and shops. It caches all the cool breeze. It fulfills the island experience.

  • Great affordable 2 bedroom apt in Shela town. Had a perfect short stay, and the price is unbeatable for a whole apt. Thanks Chris!

  • If you want to spend a holiday in the island of Lamu, the accommodation provided by Chris is ideal to feel at home. The village of Shela is quiet, characteristic and has a beautiful beach, ideal for a relaxing holiday. The architectural style of the beautiful houses will make you fall in love with these places

    Massimo2019-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • Bring along an antiquated volume of 1001 Arabian Nights because you will feel right at home reading of adventures from millennia past. Chris's Shela home bristles with charm and authenticity. Snaking through narrow streets brings you to an unassuming door, but click the lock and you enter a place where you feel about immediately at ease. Clean and cozy with wonderful balcony views makes this a real treasure.

Shela Village, Lamu Island, Lamu, Kenya

On the beach front of Manda island, 5 minutes from Shela. Traditional style banda accommodation, singles, doubles, family room and Treehouse and a library for relaxing. Full seafood restaurant serving fresh local dishes and fully stocked bar with wood fire pizza oven overlooking the beach.
On the beach front of Manda island this is the perfect place to relax for days or weeks. Airy traditional style bandas, all en-suite with a private swing bed set in the shade and chill out library area with swing chairs. We have pizza and film night every Friday which is a popular evening on the island. Yoga classes twice a week and a Sunday brunch. Only 5 minutes from Shela and 20 minutes from Lamu town.
The beach is empty, no hassle and perfect for swimming. Your room is a 30 second walk to the ocean. Easy access to Lamu and Shela for a bit of village life but its always great to get back to the beach and relax at the bar under the stars.
  • Imagine waking up and seeing an unspoilt almost empty large white sanded beach with with a tempting clear sea lapping at its edge and a couple of small boats anchored nearby. That is what awaits you each morning if you stay here. The wooden huts you stay in are a great balance between feeling low-key, whilst still being quite luxurious with big warm showers, electricity and plugs. Plus the team do a great job of ensuring bugs are not an issue with a good mosquito net & a smoke addition each night. Only watch out is you wake up with the sun rise as there is natural light openings in the huts plus the sun is very intense in Lamu. I did struggle a bit through the middle of the day with the heat. But the shaded seats and bar that overlooks the beach meant sitting reading with a beer became the ideal activity until the heat cooled down in the afternoon.

    Laurence2019-11-21T00:00:00Z
  • It’s an absolutely amazing place. Great service and very warm staff. The sunsets are a bonus

    Kelvin2019-11-08T00:00:00Z
  • We had such a lovely stay at Diamond Beach Village. Eunice was consistently very helpful and always attentive. As far as orienting yourself, Diamond Beach is a private resort directly across the channel from Shela (swimmable at low tide) and about a 10-15 minute boat ride to Lamu. We recommend the full-day dhow ride, fishing, yoga, and a Sunday massage (extra costs but worth it, especially if other guests are interested in the water activities and you can split costs with them). The room, bed, and bathroom were even nicer and more comfortable than expected, and the outside bed hammock was an awesome touch. Wifi was not super strong, but who needs wifi when you’re in paradise?! As others have noted, food was delicious, especially the pizza (recommend seafood and Mexican pizza). We hope to return one day!

  • Peaceful place to retreat!

    Nneka2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • We decided to end our trip through Kenya on the Lamu Archipelago. Based on everything we had read we were hoping to find a charming place on the beach to relax. Most travel blogs and travel guides were recommending to stay on Lamu Island, meaning either in Lamu town or in Shella. Lamu town being described as “lively” and Shella as “quite luxury with a beautiful beach”. Very little was said about Manda Island and Diamond Beach. When we first saw Diamond Beach Village we instantly loved the look of the place but we were not sure, whether it was practical to stay there. Since restaurants etc. are all on Lamu Island, we were not sure, whether we would feel too much cut off from everything. But all doubts turned out to be fully unnecessary. We could not have been happier about our stay on Manda Island and at Diamond Beach Village. Diamond beach village is a very authentic and eco-friendly accommodation, right on the beach and is run with great attention to detail. The place is peaceful, so is its whole surrounding. Since there is no town on Manda Island, especially in the morning, you can have the beach for yourself. Also during the day the beach, which is actually much more beautiful than Shella beach, feels almost private. And what we highly appreciated, is that no one approaches you to sell you things. It is very easy to visit the places around, and for us returning to Diamond Beach (Village) always felt relieving. The breakfast, and every food we ordered @ the own restaurant was super fresh and delicious. The whole experience was rounded up by Racheals hospitality, recommendations and bookings. This beautiful place wins with its simplicity without sacrificing comfort.

    Claire-Marie2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • We loved it. It’s a perfect spot to relax and eat well. The staff were very friendly. Manda Island is quiet and set apart but only a 5 minute boat ride from Shela and not far from Lamu town either. We would definitely return.

  • Great!

    Megan2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • Rachael's place is perfect for a quiet and relaxing time. It's right on the beach with beautiful views, esp. the sunset. The food is great. Ofcourse try out the pizza it's amazing. Friday movie night is a plus plus. I totally recommend it for anyone looking to take a break and just relax.

Simple Top Floor with Sea View and terrace is a simple but lovely small apartment for 3 people; ideal for a couple, a group of friends or a small family. Located only a few minutes walk from the beach and the main restaurants of Shela, Lamu. If you are looking for simplicity, sea view and a terrace for a good price, this is the place for you. Send a message if you have any question. I reply fast.
Simply furnished, this house belongs to my friend Abdillah. Ideal if you like simplicity and enjoy a sea view when you open your eyes in the morning. It has a great terrace to relax and take the breeze after a day at the beach or in town.
The house is located a few minutes from the beach, in a little alley just behind the waterfront. It's the beginning of the lovely village of Shela, the best place to stay in Lamu to have a relaxed holiday by the sea. All shop and restaurants are walking distance from the house. A nice breeze blows from the sea directly on the terrace. It's quiet yet near everything. No cars on the island... You might hear a donkey or some chickens sometimes, but this is everywhere in the village ;-)
  • This apartment was wonderful! It had a beautiful view of the bay, was full of natural light, and was absolutely pristine. Rama is an excellent host and I will definitely stay here again next time I am in Shela!

    Andrew2019-11-28T00:00:00Z
  • This apartment is well located, as beautiful as described, a little paradise! Getting to know your way around the little streets of Shela is a pleasure, people are so welcoming, and the quietness and the view are priceless. A little home away from home! Thanks Rama and Stefania for the good communication and hospitality!

    Caroline2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Rama’s place. The space was beautiful and very clean. Rama was extremely helpful with local tips and went above and beyond to arrange our questions and requests. Plus, on our last day the owner carried our bags out for us. We love this place and would definitely recommend!

    Lauren2019-11-05T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful place to stay! The view from the terrace and the roof is stunning. Everyone was incredibly helpful and made our stay spectacular. The local cook made us a delicious meal and the building owner made sure everything was setup for us (even ran a generator when the power was out). When we forgot a hat in Lamu town, Hamisi even arranged to have it delivered later that day! It was an amazing place with amazing people. Staying in Shela was also the right choice for us, quieter and more peaceful than Lamu town. I'd highly recommend staying with Rama! Enjoy Shela!

    Kay2019-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place to stay, very cosy and comfortable, easy to find and great host. Will definitely come back here my next weekend away to Lamu.

    Nina2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • We had a short two-night stay and the place was perfect for us! The views from the balcony are lovely, and you can get even higher by going up on the roof. Practically steps from the waterfront and all cafes, restaurants and shops, so very conveniently located. Beautiful furniture, good mosquito nets and a fan.

    Priscilla2019-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • This place is beautiful. I spent hours sitting on the veranda looking out at the ocean and reading. The apartment is simple but beautiful and was quiet at night (and well-vented, so it cooled off well). I wish I could have stayed longer. Rama is a very helpful and friendly host. He arranged transport to and from the airport and helped me set up a sunset dhow ride. Everything was great and so easy thanks to his help. He also offered to set up a cook to come to the place, which I wish I had made use of. Can’t recommend this place enough!

Our house, Catherine House, is situated very near the center of the old Lamu town, a five minutes walk from the busy harbour. It is a good starting point for strolling around in the lively narrow streets, for shopping, for finding one of Lamus many restaurants, and for boat trips on a traditional dhow to the nearby fantastic beaches and to small villages. See also www. lamu.no for more information about the house, the island and Lamu town.
Catherine House is a beautifully restored old swahili house with all the rooms to rent around a patio on the first floor. On the top there is a big roof terrace, partly covered by a traditional palm roof, where it is lovely to relax, to eat the islands seafood, alone in tranquility or together with friends. Chengo can buy and prepare the meal for you if you wish. The house does not have a washing machine, but Chengo can when needed also wash your clothes - of course for some extra payment.
The house is centrally placed right behind the main square of the town, near the old fort and a bustling life in the narrow streets. Try some of the good food that is sold from small stands in Lamu road in the evenings.
  • Beautiful and perfectly clean house ran by Chengo, who is kind and helpful. Chengo made welcomed us and helped us with anything we needed, always smiling. Catherine and Karin are reactive and helpful. Many thanks

  • A perfect relaxing location in the heart of Lamu town. Perfect on site support if needed too. We were met at the airport which made arrival and finding the house a breeze. Highly recommended.

    Simon2019-12-04T00:00:00Z
  • We were a group of 4, and this place accommodated us perfectly, with room to spare. The rooftop was absolutely beautiful, and we spent most of our time there. The homes caretaker, Chango, was absolutely wonderful. He met us at the airport, and immediately made us feel welcome and at home. When we had some issues with our plane tickets back to Nairobi, he immediately sprung to action and helped us acquire new tickets. He is also an amazing chef! In fact, it was the best food we have had so far in Kenya. We highly recommend this place, and cant express enough how much we enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home.

    Ida2019-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent place - well located. Perfect for a couple of days exploring Lamu Town.

    Maurice2019-11-05T00:00:00Z
  • The catherine house is great. It is very well located, only a few steps away from the seafront. The sleeping rooms and bathrooms are clean and the roof terrace is just amazing, we used to sleep outside. Chengo is a very lovely housekeeper and helps you where ever you need help. I can highly recommend catherines house. Thank you for the great two weeks.

    Lukas2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautifully kept home in the heart of Lamu town. Chengo, who keeps the house (and makes amazing meals at request!) was a perfectly delightful and accommodating host and the breezy roof deck alone makes the place well worth the price. Highly recommended!

Island Hotel is sometimes called “The Twin Towers”, and on the top of each tower is a penthouse with its own rooftop. The rooms get a great breeze, and there’s nothing better than relaxing in the rooftop hammock, reading or just listening to the everyday village life down below. Two floors: room + rooftop 1 large double bed 1 single bed 2/3 rooftop single beds All beds have mosquito net Private bathroom with toilet and shower Towels and bedsheets available
The Island hotel is located about 4 minutes walk to the beach just one building away from Fatuma's Tower which is popular for Yoga retreats. There is WiFi but no swimming pool. We provide airport transfers at an extra cost for those who want to be met at the airport. If you can find your way to Shela just ask for the Island Hotel, everyone in shela knows the place.
The neighbor is Peponi Hotel which is the best hotel in Lamu Island. Peponi is privileged to have an alcohol bar and is the meeting place for most tourists visiting Shela
  • This is actually a review for the penthouse as we upgraded when we got there. Clinton helped arrange our boat transfers making it really easy to get there. The apartment is so lovely, airy and simple with everything you need. The rooftop is the real gem with a hammock and daybeds which we took advance of for afternoon naps. Note, only cold water but it's so hot it doesn't matter. We were really well taken care of. Thanks. Would definitely recommend.

  • Simple but authentic hotel with an amazing host. His recommendations were very helpful and he will provide you with a trustworthy captain/crew for trips around Lamu Island/pick-up from the airport. The breakfast is delicious. Would definitely book again.

This spacious and tranquil beach house, is set in a garden oasis 10 minutes walk from Peponi Hotel. Welcome to Brian's Beach House where you can relax away from the bustle of Shela Village. The 2 storey house is set on a rise just back from the shoreline. The Upstairs Apt has 2 ensuite rooms opening onto a veranda with sea views. Enjoy the sea breeze flowing through the garden in this quiet, cool & comfortable house where you'll have the perfect Lamu beach holiday.
Brian's Beach House is perfect for friends and families to share. The Upstairs Apartment has an open-plan kitchen and dining area on the veranda, one double room with king-size bed and one room with two single beds. Both rooms have an ensuite, mosquito nets and ceiling fans. *The house can also be booked as a whole house that sleeps 8 or by the room. Please contact me for options.*
Brian's Beach House is on the edge of Shela Village, and Shela is on the edge of what we all love about Lamu, the long beach, 12 kms of beach, skirted by sand dunes and almost deserted. Dhows (sailing boats) are the traditional mode of transport, great for fishing, snorkelling and especially for sailing as the sun sets - this is great fun, pack a few drinks and some snacks. Motorised boats plus windsurfing, kayaking, are available locally. Beach side restaurants and cafes dot the village, and you will find a fantastic bar and restaurant at Peponi Hotel or Kijani. Try some of the local fare of Mandazi from the morning street side bakeries for breakfast, chai in the afternoon at the cafe on the Sea Souk with a sweet treat of sim sim or labania. Shopping in the village is great, stop by Aman and visit all the other shops in the square. Pack a flash light as you might venture out at night and you will need it to get home.
  • This place was a great find! Situated on a lusciously green, quiet property, right on the water. It gives easy access to Lamu old town and Shela. The house is fitted with every amenity you could need, and Ali takes care of delicious (optional) meals at a minimal fee. We recommend Ali over most restaurants in town.

    Jessica2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderful house which is in a fantastic position... near enough the beachfront to be only a few minutes walk from the centre of Shela but also set back in a lush garden filled with birdsong which makes it quite and peaceful. Ali looked after us so well and is a wonderful cook. I thoroughly recommend Brian’s Beach House

    Cindy2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • This beach house is my favorite place I've stayed at in Lamu; I've been to Lamu something like 6-7 times but this was first ever time at Brian's Beach House. Perfect location, awesome communications/response times from both Charlie and Ali, the apartment is amazing, great view, really nice kitchen and very cool balcony to hang out on and to have your meals on. We accidentally destroyed a glass cover of a stove during our stay and Charlie and Ali could not have been more gracious and chill about it. Rooms and bathrooms are also lovely I should say - and Ali is a great cook. He also hooked us up with Farid who operates one of the boat taxis who was really wonderful and helped us as well when we wanted to do a Lamu town tour and a sunset dhow ride. Overall 6 out of 5 stars, you'll want to stay here if its available.

    Eoin2020-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • Our visit to Lamu confirmed our feelings that this is the very best place on earth to have a holiday - and Brian's Beach House was so much part of this . The house is charming, simple, comfortable and stylish - exactly what you want - set back in a lush and quite magical wild garden that provides shade and serenity. Walk down the path and through the red gate, and you're on the water - on the main path between Lamu and Shela. Turn right and in ten minutes you're at glorious Shela Beach, on the deck of Peponi's, or wandering through the alluring Shela village - a fascinating and ( to an outsider at least) successful experiment in co-existence between expatriates and locals; turn left and in thirty minutes (or ten on a boat, which you can get right outside) and you're in the bustling, ramshackle ancient city of Lamu. You couldn't be better positioned! And looked after! Ali is a perfect host, and a brilliant chef. Don't miss his grilled fish, his prawns curry, his chili calamari - all totally fresh! - and his fantastic vegetables: especially his coconut lentils and spinach, spinach, spinach like you've never eaten! All bought at the Lamu market. You can go with Ali and shop with him - he's a great guide to the town. Ali can also help you plan day-trips: don't miss going out on a dhow to a remote beach, for a grilled fish lunch on deck. Charlie, the owner, is in Australia - but is an excellent communicator. In short: we love Brian's beach house- and can't wait to return.

    Mark2020-01-09T00:00:00Z
  • We were four friends and had a lovely time at Charlie’s place. The house is just 5mins walk to Shela town, and a short boat ride to Lamu town. The upstairs had a lovely outdoor sitting area and the rooms were very comfortable. Ali the caretaker was an amazing cook and a really great person. It was very easy to communicate with Charlie over airbnb as well. Would love to stay here again!

  • Superb! Ivor is lovely and respond super quickly, he always said yes with a smile and do everything so we can have a gorgeous stay in Lamu. The apartment had a beautiful Swahili architecture with incredible furnitures, we loved there like in a movie. It’s situated in the center of Lamu, close to everything, if you like cities, this is the place for you. Be aware that Lamu has 5 mosk that do the morning prayer. During our stay we were I’ll and we were taking care of. Ivor, and also Anderson, the most helpful person we find in our trip. They really help us to get better. Lamu is a must in a trip to Kenya, at least a couple of nights in Lamu old town is something unique. Then we move to others apartments of Ivor, one better than the other one. We really recommend staying in Lamu with Ivor and his whole team :)

Welcome to our cozy compound where we live in the clouds but have our feet solid on the ground. Your space is a cozy earthy 'banda' in the heart of Shela's iconic dunes (plus a game of boggle, scrabble, monopoly or taboo if you dare).

  • Ivor's place was really lovely, our room was super spacious with a huge balcony. The swimming pool was also a touch. The location - halfway between Shela and Lamu Town - is perfect because you can very easily walk between the two. Great value for money as well. Ivor is great at communicating, he responds quickly and kindly arranged airport drop off/pick up for us. Highly recommend this place!

  • It's a great place to live in especially because it's between Shela and Lamu which offers great convince while touring the island. The swimming pool was a great highlight of our trip, I've never being a great advocate for swimming in the ocean, while hosted by Ivor, who's a great communicator. The staff are really polite and hospitable, always ready to offer tips on locations to visit during your stay and any upcoming events being held in the island. We were received from the airport by Ivor's friendly staff and he organized for our transport back which helped a great deal. A few things that could be worked on would be cleaning the apartment during one's stay. I will definitely be back to this place when visiting Lamu again.

  • My sister and I enjoyed our stay at this villa. Our room was very spacious, and decorated with flower petals when we arrived! The staff were wonderful, especially Boniface who helped connect us with a dhow captain. The location as other reviews have said is central to Lamu and Shela, which is perfect if you're new to the island like we were and want to explore both places. The only thing to improve for us is the kitchen, which can be better equipped. It wasn't very clean, some utensils were moldy, and there was no dishwashing liquid or sponge. Other than that, we enjoyed the privacy of the villa and the thoughtful staff.

    Miriam2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • This place is soo beautiful. You can walk to Lamu or Shela so it well positioned. The rooms are soo spacious and beautiful. The staff there are always ready to help. Don’t doubt this place when booking it , It’s the real deal. we had the best time here . Thank you sooo much

  • My stay at Andevelo House was fantastic. Safari, Johnson, and Abdul helped with everything we needed. It was a most relaxing end to an amazing trip to Kenya. Highly recommended.

  • This place is so stylish, it is like being on a film set. Be aware that you have to request breakfast when you book otherwise you don’t get it. This toon me by surprise as before now I had always assumed that if I am paying over $50 then breakfast is included but this isn’t the case. We also didn’t find anywhere good to have breakfast either so make sure you have this conversation before booking. We also stayed in the hotel next door called Baytil Ajaib which is in the same style and I believe actually the same building. Overall David and Andre’s place is much better. Baytil Ajaib has a 10pm curfew, is less beautiful and I was at the receiving end of the owner’s mood swing.

  • Perfect location if you’re looking for a quiet chilled environment within old town Lamu.

  • We had a great stay. The architecture is beautiful, and the roof terrace is calm and quiet and offers a beautiful view of the stars :) the breakfast everyday was a really high standard, and the staff went out of their way to help us with recommendations.

    Olivia2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • The best place ever from the decor to cleanliness to the staff. You will be extremely happy if you stay there.

  • Unbelievable!! This place is second to none. Highly recommended!

  • Words cannot describe this experience. Honestly the best Airbnb and hotel experience I have had, ever. Period. I was having a bad experience at another Airbnb, and I messaged the host (David, the owner) in desperation as our current Airbnb was without power in the dead heat. David responded within minutes agreeing to host us and sent Safari to get us within 30 minutes. With my wife and I now with all our luggage in a hotel with no heat, exhausted, and frustrated with our current situation, Safari showed up with a huge smile and was happy to grab our bags. We began the journey of a 3-4 minute walk. We were tired, sweaty, and just about out of gas when we arrived into this place. When we got in, within seconds Abhu came around the corner with ICE COLD face towels. They took our bags and told us to relax. As we sat with our faces now covered in this towel, Abhu comes back with coconuts filled with coconut water with straws and flowers. This blew us away and we knew we were in for a treat. They gave us a tour of the villa. It is a PALACE! STUNNING. HUGE rooms, LOTS of fans. Well ventilated. Quiet. Big bathrooms. Tons of windows, yet can close all of them if needed. A super comfortable bed. Amazing rooftop. We went down to the cold pool to relax. One of the owners, David, came to greet us and spent 30 minutes with us helping us, giving suggestions, and getting to know us as we relaxed in the cool pool that was PERFECT for a 95+ degree day. There are many highlights from our stay: Homemade breakfast that was essentially customized down to everything we wanted: fresh juice, eggs, pastries, coffee, fruit, toast, for an extremely reasonable price and made by Johnson, who was fantastic. Seems like every time we left the room, they came in the spruce up everything: turndown, more water, fresh towels, the works. On the second day of breakfast, David came and spoke to us for hours telling us about the history of the building, sharing how he acquired the property and it is clear he put a lot of passion into this. He even showed us pictures of the renovations. It was incredible to learn the history. At night when we were walking out and about, we even saw Safari taking other guests around to show them where to go. Our one of our last days, we also saw David and the team putting up a Christmas tree together. A super nice touch around the holidays. On our last morning, Safari took us to the airport and wished us well with a huge grin on his face with both of his arms waving goodbye to us as we crossed security. We will miss him, Abhu, and Johnson for sure. They are a complete delight and have incredible hospitality. This place may be a bit more dollars than other places in Lamu, yet I promise if you stay here, you will not be disappointed. It is worth it. This experienced helped make our trip one of the best, EVER! THANK YOU Safari, Abhu, Johnson, and David! I now know I will likely forever be disappointed in the future for not having an experience like they delivered to us.

  • Beautiful and clean space but above all, a FANTASTIC staff - Safari, Johnson and Abhu are wonderful and accommodating. You’ll want to eat breakfast and dinner there - we ate at a popular restaurant outside and paid tourist prices the first night. We then ate the same dish prepared by Abhu (Swahili crab) the second night and it was the best crab, much more delicious, and less expensive than the first night. We would have stayed another night just to eat another dinner there. Altogether, highly recommend staying here and in Lamu Old Town vs shella for tradition, culture and real local lifestyle.

Jamala House is light and central located to Lamu Fort in the historic oldest part of Lamu. It's a quiet and private resort with a relaxing garden. Rebuild to high standard and reopened in 2018. All rooms have private bath with hot water. There is a kitchen for common use and couches to relax as well as a rooftop with a great view of the sea. Me Baji, the manager, am also happy to give advice on good places to eat, get you a nice boat trip on my Dhow or help you with any other questions.
  • Staying in this area of Lamu is going back in time, the house is in a very good location in Lamu, near the fort, the market and the mosque. As such, one experiences what life is like there, the narrow streets with traffic of passers-by and donkeys, smells, the songs of the mosque and so on. It is a wonderful experience for those who like this kind of thing. The house is wonderful and the rooms are quite spacious. In addition, attention to one is excellent.

    Carlos2020-01-09T00:00:00Z
  • I love it here! My room is huge!!! The ceilings are high the bed is firm and the pillow just right. The ceilingbfan keeps me cool at night. The bathroom is a nice size and the large rain-head shower head with the actual hot water feels great. I love cominhg home at night and relaxing on the daybed outside my room -such good breezes there at night and bougainvillea and the sea to admire during the day. Breakfast is both pretty and good. Best breakfast I've had on my trip. The location is also good to me. Its 4 minutes walk to the waterfront and near all the restaurants and action. The galleries and shopping is close. Its a long walk or nice boat ride to the actual beach but the walk has done me good. Its a scenic walk. I like that there is a variety of local and upscale restaurants close by. If you want the real swahili culture, great hospitality, and a peaceful place to stay then this is it. By the way, you will hear the muslim call over the speaker nearby but that's part of the experience. It didn't bother me nor interrupt my sleep.

  • Absolutely loved staying at Jamala Guesthouse. Badji was a great host, and always easy to reach. Quite enjoyed all the experiences he helped arranged. A great host with a stunning home: Jamala house is clean and pretty fuss free. I liked how central it was and how easy it made getting to the boats and motorcycles.

    Dineo2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • Jamala House was a pleasure to stay at. The room I stayed in was spacious, large, and very airy. Given the heat in Lamu, the ceiling fan was bliss and it was good enough for a peaceful sleep. The breakfast comes with fresh fruits and juice, all of it put together well. I loved the central location which made it very easy to move around the town. Baji is a very helpful host and has useful tips to offer. I highly recommend Jamala House for your stay in Lamu Town!

  • Great place and hospitality, very clean. Felt like home from the first moment I entered. Lovely staff and breakfast is delicous!

  • Our short stay at Jamala House in the old town center of Lamu was perfect. The house is spacious, stylish and clean. And Baji is a great host. We would surely recommend to stay at his place !

    Caroline2018-10-25T00:00:00Z
  • Exceptionally Great host who will connect you to the best of Lamu

    Liza2018-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • Baji was the best host my friends and I could ever hope for. He offered to pick us from the airport and arranged for a surprise cruise in his boat for my friends' birthday which we then continued to celebrate with cake and wine that he was so gracious to arrange for. He was warm and very accomodating during our entire stay and even took us on a cruise to see the sunset, for a negligible small fee, and the sandy beaches of Lamu as well. We definitely recommend him 100% as host !

  • Lovely spot in Lamu, great value for money and very friendly and helpful staff. Spacious room, basic bathroom and a great private balcony overlooking Shella village. Would recommend

    Louisa2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay, such lovely and attentive hosts. We really enjoyed the roof terrace and the Dhow trips they organised for us.

    Harriet2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • We had a really good time here, Swalleh and the team made us feel so welcomed and at home. Just a few minutes from the ships and the beautiful beach of shella, lamu. Also the place being in the streets made us meet more locals and feel the town's spirit. Lamu was amazing and we highly reccomend this penthause suit.

    Liora2019-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • This place may be a hard to find at first, but nothing is in these maze-like streets of Shela village. The house is a magnificent example of traditional Lamu style, and the penthouse suite has an amazing roof area with 300 degree views from the fourth storey with complete with cool breeze, hammock, and a handful of beautiful Swahili beds. Downstairs there are 3 beds with nets so it can sleep up to 5 people, making this a ridiculous value if you bring all those people but even with just the two of us, the value is remarkable. Staying here makes you feel like royalty. The caretakers are extremely hospitable and friendly, and a grande breakfast is included. Finally, one unadvertized fact that we learned later is that this place is owned by a local! So many hotels and airbnbs are owned by Westerners which is a shame given the small tourist-centered economy of the area. It's refreshing to know that what we payed goes 100% to the lovely people of the island.

    Nick2019-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • Swaleh and his beautiful family made our stay very special. Sharing fantastic local knowledge, making sure we were looked after and happy at every moment and always greeting us with such an amazing bright and sunny attitude. Thank you!

    Katie2019-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at this place was perfect. The penthouse is a gorgeous big space with two levels and a 360 degree view upstairs. But our experience was made even better by the amazing hospitality of Swaleh and his family who look after the place. They served us a delicious breakfast every morning, gave us local tips and were very friendly. I can't think of one fault to give the place except for maybe the cold shower, but even that could be pleasant on a warm Lamu day. I highly recommend this AirBnb!

    Ariana2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay! The space was clean and beautiful and the breakfast was great. We would stay here again.

    Micah2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • Shima, Swale, Clinton, Munib— all were very hospitable and quick to attention. It’s a lovely - if not overly complicated - place, easy to relax at and be based in Shela. Good value. Would go back!

  • Lovely house, in the center of Shela. A true swahili house with a splendid view, very quiet and where people feel confy after 2 seconds! Most of all, sami the housekeeper is the most delicate and sweet host, guide and chef one could dream of, an angel! Huge recommandation.

  • Brunhilde's place is one-of-a-kind: cool and secluded on the first floor, beautiful views of surrounding Shela on the second and third floors. Her housekeeper Sami is a wonderful host, very knowledgeable about the local history of Lamu. I was traveling on my own and he helped me find my way around, showed me around Lamu town, and accompanied me to/from the airport. I visited during the off-season so most shops and restaurants were closed, but it was still a great getaway and I can't wait to go back.

This spacious & tranquil beach house, is set in a garden oasis 10 mins walk to Shela beach. Welcome to Brian's Beach House where you can relax away from it all. The house is set on a rise just back from the shoreline. The Downstairs Apt has 2 ensuite rooms opening onto a veranda with garden views. Enjoy the breeze flowing through the garden in this quiet, cool & comfy house where you'll have the perfect Lamu stay.
Brian's Beach House is perfect for friends and families to share. The Downstairs Apartment has one double room with king-size bed, ensuite and private outdoor shower,. The second room has two single beds and ensuite. There’s a large living/dining area with kitchenette between the two bedrooms. Both rooms have mosquito nets and ceiling fans. *The house can also be booked as the whole house or by the room.
Beach side restaurants and cafes dot the village, and you will find a fantastic bar and restaurant at Peponi Hotel. Try some of the local fare of Mandazi from the morning street side bakeries for breakfast, chai in the afternoon at the cafe on the Sea Souk with a sweet treat of sim sim or labania. Shopping in the village is great, stop by Aman and visit all the other shops in the square. Pack a torch as you might venture out at night and you will need it to get home.
  • Wonderful Lamu house with beautiful garden. Charlie and the house team are great hosts. Didn't want to leave and can't wait to come back

    Natalie2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic place. So quiet and just a short walk from the centre of Shela. Would definitely stay here again.

    Oli2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Brian’s house. Ali is an amazing host and cooked us the most delicious meals. We are not usually people who would eat in on holiday but the options to eat out are limited at Shela and Ali’s meals are fantastic. The house is peaceful and relaxing which is a nice contrast to the hot streets of Shela. Brian’s house is the main reason we enjoyed our trip to Lamu Island.

    Nikki2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • This place is amazing! From the moment you enter the property you feel like youve entered your own personal palace. Chef Ali made the most delicious dishes and made sure our stay was perfect. It’s an incredibly stylish villa and has all the luxury amenities. The net didn’t work but we didn’t require it. I’ll definitely be going back to stay here!

    Sofia2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • Sparkling clean, private and perfect!

    Soraiya2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Brian's place is a beautiful gem surrounded with lush vegetation right next to the Shela beach front. It is hidden, yet accessible. Other than the beautiful home, the team that support your stay make it that much better. Ali is a great cook, I would highly recommend having him prepare your meals while here. Captain Farid is a valuable resource not only to get around by boat, but also to arrange Dhow rides and navigate Lamu town (should you need a guide). Charlie's Ali, and Farid make a great team. I'd highly recommend staying at Brian's Beach house for both first time vand seasonal visitors.

  • Poolhouse is a little paradise in the heart of Lamu Town. The villa itself is beautifully decorated with eclectic pieces and a gorgeous big pool that we barely got out of. The staff at Poolhouse were warm and accommodating and we had some outstanding meals from Chaky, the chef. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience and are already looking at how we can go back again. Thank you very much!

    Katie2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful home with a very welcome pool to come back to after a hot day in town! Cooking and juices both wonderful, especially the homemade breakfasts. Thank you for having us.

    Hannah2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • There are few words that can describe the amazing beauty of this house. We were a group of six and we spent 4 nights in the premises. The rooms are amazing, the pool is magical and there is also a super nice dog that will beg for your caresses as long as you want to give it to her. The owner of the house has an astonishing aesthetic sense. But what we love the most are the people that work in the house as housekeper and chef. The staff cooked for us the best dinner we had during our vacation, and they also prepared very nice cocktails. They love details, breakfast is amazing and they collect fragrant flower to perfume the house. What else we should say? Wonderful!

    Alice2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • The poolhouse is a charming get away, tucked behind the Main Street in Lamu, Chaky met us at the airport and escorted us to this little gem, where we were greeted by Stephen. The house is well appointed, good bed linen & bath towels. The pool is spotlessly clean as is the house. There is a 4 legged permanent residence called Masio and she is just gorgeous. Chaky is an excellent host and a great cook, Stephen provided us with cocktails & delicious smoothies. What a bonus that breakfast is included and again homemade muffins, pancakes & waffles!!! What a treat. I would recommend the Pool House but be aware of the open steps not suitable for small kiddies. Myself and my 2 nieces certainly enjoyed every minute. Asante sana 😊

    Paola2019-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • Our experience at the pool house was more than our wildest dreams. This unique and eclectic villa has been gorgeously preserved to its historical beauty by the owners. They have re-imagined an environment tucked away in a quiet area of the island. If you want a truly special and grand experience in Lamu, we highly recommend staying at Jan’s home. Stephen and Chaky will we’re extremely hospitable and kind. We had everything we needed there, and they purchased any food and drink items needed. Chaky’s meals are Swahili-inspired with his own twist depending on your tastes. Stephen can make you any fresh juice, smoothie and cocktail with local fruits throughout the day. All in all, we were very spoiled and lucky to have them during our time on the island.

    Kim2019-11-19T00:00:00Z
  • This house is the most beautiful place I have ever seen and is worth the trip to Lamu in itself. Beautifully placed in the middle of Lamu old town, a place full of history, welcoming people, the harbor and local shops. The food prepared by chef Chaky was amazing, whether it was breakfast or dinner, he has his own way finding the different tastes that go together. Stephen makes the most delicious drinks from the fruits in season and makes sure everything in the house is in order. The house is just next to one of the many mosques in Lamu which means you will enjoy beautiful prayers. The owner has brought art from many different African countries and the house has so many treasures to be admired while you look around or relax by the pool. Not to mention the amazing roof terrace. If I ever get the chance to go back to Lamu, this would be my absolute top choice. Asante sana!

  • The Poolhouse is a real oasis in Lamu Old Town.

    Jeremy2019-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • We feel so privileged to have stayed at Lamu Pool House. It's the most beautiful house in the authentic, peaceful town of Lamu. We had read the reviews, but still weren't prepared for just how amazing the whole experience would be. Stephen and Chaky provide not just amazing food and drink, but optimise the experience by gestures such as candllelit lighting in the evening and beautiful and fragrant flowers. We so wished we had booked to stay longer as we were only there for 3 nights, but at least we have a very good reason to return!!!

Our hotel is good for couples, adventurers, business travellers, groups, students and Backpackers. Our hotel has a huge Garden for you and your kids to play safely and enjoy the shade of different trees. Our hotel has free internet access, Wi-Fi but only in the public space like in the Restaurant, Garden and office.
Our hotel is unique because we are between Lamu township and Shela beach and there fore very easy to visit both place in one day. We have very beautiful garden where you can sit and relax and get fresh air from the Indian Ocean. The staff are very friendly and ready to help you at any time. In our hotel we have four security dogs which are free only at night and locked early in the morning, but they are very friendly with our guest and therefore don't be afraid.
Our neighborhood is very friendly and always ready to help you.
  • What was the most memorable things is the breakfast. Spanish omelet using organic eggs where kind of wild chicken walking around in the garden. It was only one night stay for business. While l can enjoy jogging to the beach in the morning and walking around both Lamu and other side of the island. This is a quite unique location while you can go by foot, riding motorcycle taxi and boat to many places in the island.

  • Omar was an amazing host. He ensured that I had the best experience at Dudu Villas and in Lamu. He connected me to the right people that enriched my experience. The place is nicely located between Lamu and Shela. I highly recommend Dudu villas.

  • Beautiful place to stay conveniently located in between Lamu Town and Shella Beach. It did feel a bit strange being the only guest on a large pemise but maybe not enough people know about it. Anyways, I'd recommend it to anyone traveling as a group as there is plenty of space! Omar is very helpful and responsive as well.

  • Really nice place! Lots of space around, beautiful trees and outside space for breakfast. Omar and his wife are nice, friendly people. Situated between Lamu town and Shela beach and I loved it!

This is to the lovers of humanity that can walk through a village and up on to the sandy hills of Shela. To those that love children, plants, pets, food and sweaty hikes to the beach. Welcome to our cozy compound where we live in the clouds but have our feet solid on the ground. Your space is a cozy guest room - plus a game of boggle, scrabble, monopoly or taboo if you dare.
