Laughing Loon cottage is a charming, private 2 bedroom cottage on the shores of Lake Ainslie. Centrally located, you are a short drive to some of the most exciting attractions CapeBreton has to offer. Lake Ainslie is the largest fresh water lake in Nova Scotia and offers great fishing, bird watching, canoeing and has the most beautiful sunsets. The space; the cottage has 2 bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with a double. There is a full bathroom with tub and shower. The kitchen is open to the living area and has a stove, microwave, small fridge, toaster oven and Keurig coffee machine. In the living area there is lots of comfortable seating and a small dining table. Although there is a wood stove the main source of heat and air conditioning is a heat pump. The cottage is bright with lots of windows and a large deck overlooking the lake. There is a barbeque and shade umbrella on the deck as well as a fire pit by the water. The area; You will be 20km from the village of Inverness where you'll find amenities such as groceries, banking, laundromat, beautiful beaches and world famous golf courses. There is a small convenience store 4km north at Scotsville. Attractions; Within a 30-40 min drive you can be enjoying the breathtaking Cabot Trail, golfing on the world famous Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs courses, enjoying a tour at Glenora Distillery, exploring the Highland Village, or enjoying any number of local musical Ceilidhs. Need more adventure, try fishing, kayaking, hiking on the Canada trail, and horseback riding. Pets are welcome but mustn't be left unattended. We will make every effort to meet you on arrival and let you know what local activities are happening during your time here.
  • This is a lovely cottage on the shore of Lake Ainslie. The area is quiet and the view of the lake from inside the cottage and from the deck is fantastic. There are no nearby neighbours so it is easy to hear the waves, the wind in the leaves, and the singing of the birds. The cottage is well equipped with all you need in the kitchen. The two bedrooms (one small and the other fairly large) are nicely decorated and both beds are very comfortable. Eileen brought extra blankets because the nights had been colder prior to our arrival. The living/dining area is large enough for four people to find plenty of space, there is comfortable (sofa) seating for four, a rocking chair, and a small dining table with four chairs by the picture window. It was not the greatest weather when we were there, but our time spent reading in the cottage was very comfortable. There are also a few board games and a deck of cards available. We loved our stay here, and will definitely consider booking it again on return visits.

  • Eileen’s cottage is private w breathtaking views of lake. We stayed here 3 nights and loved coming back after hiking and exploring

  • Eileens place is exactly as advertised. Clean, welcoming and a quiet and charming place to spend any amount of time. Close to amenities and yet private and nestled on the lake.

  • Eileen is a great host. She left us delicious scones and strawberry jam, with enough food for our breakfasts. She made sure we didn't miss anything, and had a great time. The place has an amazing view of the lake and is peaceful! We absolutely recommend it!

  • Eileen was an amazing host, kept in touch with us to make sure we were enjoying our stay. Her homemade biscuits and jam were such a nice personal touch to welcome us. Property view is gorgeous, best sunsets we have seen, such a quiet peaceful spot to relax.

  • I truly cannot say enough good things about the Laughing Loon Cottage. The lake views were absolutely incredible. We were truly in awe every time we came home to the cottage after a day of hiking and exploring Cape Breton. We thoroughly enjoyed using the bbq, fire pit, and stargazing at night! The cottage itself was extremely clean and Eileen left eggs and coffee to get us started, which lasted us the entire time we were there. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking to visit Cape Breton.

    Christine2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • This place is fantastic! Our family of 5 (complete with 3 boys under the age of 5) had a week FULL of memories. The cottage is central to everything in western Cape Breton, we day tripped all up and down the coast and to the Baddeck area too. We caught lots of fish, spent lots of time at Inverness Beach (which is practically empty on the busiest days and has an awesome board walk), hiking and craft brew drinking (2 breweries within a 30 min drive!) etc. All the reviews of this cottage I read are perfectly accurate. It's well stocked with anything you need, Eileen was readily available with any questions we had and its beautifully located on a large quiet lake, surrounded by beautiful rolling hills and soaring bald eagles. I can't thank Eileen enough for sharing her family cottage with us, they got an album of how they built it originally! Very cool!

Country home located in the small quiet community of Scotsville at the start of the South West Margaree River (known for its Atlantic salmon fishing). The perfect place to "kick back" and relax or a great home base location for exploring all that Cape Breton has to offer: Celtic Colours International festival (Oct 6- 14),Egypt Falls, sandy beaches,Cabot Links Golf Course located in Inverness (15 min. Drive), Glenora Distillery (20 min drive), Cabot Trail (30 min drive to its start) and much more
This house is fully equipped with two bedrooms and an extra 3/4 size bed in the upstairs wide hallway. The covered deck is a wonderful place to enjoy your morning coffee but if it is too chilly out you can sit at the kitchen table and enjoy the view of the Margaree River.
Just a few minutes walk 'up the road" is the General Store and Post Office, where you can get those last minute groceries or send off a post card. A 15 min drive to Inverness and you can shop at the Co-Op, check out the local restaurants, visit local artists and/or walk along Inverness beach and boardwalk
  • This was our 2nd stay at Catherine’s beautiful home. The house itself is in a beautiful setting overlooking the river and is conveniently located for being able to explore Cape Breton. The home is well maintained and lovely and there are many details to make guests feel welcome and at home. Catherine and John were always available & responsive if we had any questions. We hope to stay at the home again!

    Alicia2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Catherine's home is a quiet lovely place to stay. It was clean and her brother met us there to check us in and show us around. We really enjoyed the verandah overlooking the river it was like a private nature reserve: we saw bald eagles, herons, and a variety of other birds and wildlife!

    Kevin & Emily2019-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Celtic Colours far exceeded our expectations! The house is well stocked, clean, and cozy. The views are spectacular! We enjoyed most of our time at home on the front porch taking it all in. We highly recommend hiking Egypt Falls, only a 10 minute drive away. The house is very private and in a central location to explore Cape Breton. We enjoyed driving the Cabot Trail, the beach at Port Hood, and dinner at The Red Shoe in Mabou. Communication was seemless and easy. We would definitely come back!

    Jennifer2019-07-31T00:00:00Z
  • You will not be disappointed by booking with Catherine. The house was in a perfect location and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

    Rosie2019-07-01T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely home well situated for exploring Cape Breton especially the Highlands. So peaceful and quiet. Very comfortable and well stocked. Thank you Catherine and John!

    Cindy2018-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • This place is a gem! Clean, comfortable and relaxing. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. The hosts welcome you and give you all the needed information for the home. The setting is incredible with a lazy river full of wild life from baby ducks, eagles, muskrat and even a fox. The Trans Canada trail is walking distance and nice for off road bikes. The house is close to a grocery store( about 20 min) and the town of Mabou and The Red Shoe Restaurant a must as they have live music almost every night. It is about 30 min to the Cabot trail. We highly recommend staying here.

    Kim2018-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Catherine's place is a wonderful, charming country home nestled into a hill by an active river of ducks, muskrat and daily hummingbirds. It was very spacious for the four of us and we loved sitting on the porch watching the river life. it took only an hour and a bit to get to the Skyline hiking trail and another hour in the other direction to Baddeck. I highly recommend this quiet getaway home!

    Xanthe2018-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful stay. Would be happy to stay there again. The listed hosts brother John was most helpful and met us at the house. Right next to a beautiful river with a fine view. Had breakfast on the covered porch, watched the ducks swimming in front of us. Property was lovely too, and while we didn't expect the washer and dryer we were happy to use it.

Location is all or so it's said. Blessed with a stretch of sand two miles long, an ocean that can reach 73 degrees Fahrenheit and spectacular sunsets that dip into the gulf each evening, this stunning geography is, in large part, the reason a majority of our guests return again and again. It's not the only reason but once you've experienced a stress free day at the beach, you will be enticed to return for another dip in the warm coastal waters or the fresh water stream that runs into them.

Our home and little piece of artistic heaven is located just 3km from the village of Inverness, the Cabot golf courses, a 3 mile white sandy beach and a 30 second walk to my gallery. Your guest suite is located on the top floor of our home with your own private entrance. Your living room, kitchenette, bathroom and bedroom with a balcony is separated from our living space. From your balcony you can enjoy peaceful views of my sculptural garden, ocean, sunsets, and listen to the babbling brook.
Your 1 bedroom guest suite includes a comfortable, well appointed sitting area with a TV (Netflix), a three piece ensuite bathroom (shower), a separate bedroom with a queen size bed and balcony with comfortable seating. Your suite also includes a cozy kitchen area with a sink, mini fridge with freezer, microwave, toaster, coffee/tea machine, dishes and an outdoor barbecue. There is a stair case to your unit as it is on the second floor, which may not be suitable for children or persons with mobility restrictions. The entrance to your space is key entry. A fire pit is on-site (fire restrictions may periodically restrict use of fire pit) that can be made available for those nights you just want to relax.
We are nestled in the woods with panoramic views of the Northumberland Strait. Our location is peaceful, energizing and a perfect place to get in touch with yourself, each other, and nature yet still close to the action. Inverness is home to fabulous shops such as Quincy, several fine restaurants such as those found on the Cabot Links property, Route 19 Brewery, West Side Cook house and the The Reel Pizza. The Glenora Distillery is a short 10 minute drive. Inverness has a lovely boardwalk along a three mile white sandy beach with some of the warmest water to enjoy well into late September. The world renowned Cabot Cliffs Golf Course is approximately 2 km from our home and the Links is 3 km. We can accommodate golf club storage during your stay! Our property is located just behind the Village of Inverness (about 3 km).
  • I stayed at Doug' place for one night. Only regret is that we didn't have more time to spend there. Great hosts, nice location with beautiful views from the private balcony, got a tour of his art gallary and work. Highly recommended.

    Jatinder2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Doug and Carrie’s. The space is exactly as described, very comfortable bed with beautiful views. The conversation through art was certainly our favorite part as we explored Doug’s artwork in the studio and throughout the yard. Would certainly recommend!

    Michelle2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • We loved this place. The view from the room is beautiful. We could see a beautiful sunrise and could see the magnificent sculptures made by the owner. The room is beautiful, peacfull and very clean and the owners very welcoming. In the morning, the owner gave us a tour to show us his works of art, it was an amazing experience. We certainly recommend this place!

  • We enjoyed our stay at Doug's, great host with lots of local knowledge and an amazing property to enjoy.

    Stefan2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Doug and Carrie's place is a perfect stay to start or end a tour through Cape Breton National Park, what we did. The acommondation has everything you need and has a beautiful design, we loved. Nevertheless, the highlight is Dougs guided tour through bis art work in his atelier and garden. Also the area around is nice and calm and we did even see a deer in our way there. We recommend the place very much!

    Laura2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • My first time staying in a shared/private room Airbnb and Doug and Carrie could not have been better hosts. Very accommodating and understanding of my late arrival. Bed was cleaner and more comfortable than I could have ever imagined! If I could give 6 stars I would!

    Ivan2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Doug’s place is awesome! It’s clean, quiet and generously equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Very close to all amenities in the town of Inverness including the beach and Route 19 brewery. It’s way nicer than in the pictures. Highly recommend staying here!

    Clint2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful unit to stay in! Although you do need to go through the main house to get to it, the suite is self contained otherwise and has a beautiful and comfy bedroom with the best view ever, as well as a little kitchenette (toaster, fridge and coffee maker) and nicely appointed bathroom and living room! Everything was clean, and full of thoughtful touches! The location is so nice and quiet, I wish I'd had a bit more time just to enjoy being there and wandering around the gardens. Make sure to check out Doug's artwork in the studio!!!! Thanks again for a wonderful stay. I would definitely return if I'm ever in the area again!

Modern mini home located on a picturesque Cape Breton farm along the world famous Margaree Heritage River. The house has two bedrooms, each with a double bed and the living room has a pull out sofa that sleeps two as well. The kitchen is fully equipped. This gem is within 7km of beautiful sandy beaches and minutes from the Cabot Trail and Cabot Links. Enjoy a ski or snowshoe trip in the winter, a canoe in the spring, festivals in the summer or the brilliant colours of fall. This is a great base location for the Celtic Colours International Festival. (URL HIDDEN)
We live on a very peaceful and private 200 acre farm with wooded areas, open fields and waterways. Our closest neighbours are 1km away.
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay over the holidays. The trailer was clean, cozy and even decorated for Christmas. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals and the washer and dryer was convenient. The wifi didnt seem to be working and there is limited cable so I'd recommend bringing some boardgames/movies for rainy days. There were lots of interesting books to read however. All in all, a peaceful little place to stay in Cape Breton at an incredible value.

  • Anne’s place is a true gem! So scenic and relaxing. The house was the perfect size and it was sparkling clean and exactly as described. Charlie the cat was the sweetest and getting to see all of the baby cows made my day!! I would absolutely recommend Anne’s place and I can’t wait to stay again!!

    Marilou2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • It is basically located in the barn and gave us a really great experience. I've never stayed in a farm/barn and it was very pleasant. The host came to welcome when we arrived. Basic amenities were available in the kitchen and heating are individually operated in each room. There were tons of parking and instructions were provided hot to connect to WiFi, TV Cable etc. It is really quite in the morning and air is so fresh. It's an older place in the barn so interior is like in the 70's but it gave us a whole new experience. The space is almost like a RV home/mobile home/motor home size. We only stayed 1 night and it was nice in the morning to see the cows and able to take some really nice pictures.

    Susannah2019-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • Great spot, great hosts, Charlie the cat was an amazing host as well. Would definitely stay again next time we are on the island!

    Kody2019-10-22T00:00:00Z
  • Anne's place is in a great location not far from the Cabot Trail. The apartment is spacious, clean and had all that we needed for a comfortable stay. The apartment is set in a farm against a lovely mountain backdrop which has beautiful fall colors right now. We enjoyed watching the cows grazed leisurely in the pasture. Charlie the cat came to say hi and bye. We loved him! We hope to be back again the next time we return to hike the Cabot Trail. Thanks for hosting us!

    Tania2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful property and everything about staying here was easy. Property is nicely located, and the land it’s on is gorgeous. Had fun watching the cows graze and had a great conversation with the owner. Friendly people, super clean house and an overall comfortable stay. Good value. Thank you!

  • Good place in a enjoyable, relaxing location. Clean and comfortable!

  • We loved the quiet and area of this little home. With limited mobility it was very easy to maneuver around the one floor. The home was very clean, with all amenities needed. The Tv is limited to only a few channels but Wifi is very good. The house is tucked in off a main highway, but not too far away. Thank you Anne!

  • Fantastic location for both sightseeing and great location for an epic Golf trip. Spacious and everything we needed. Evan communicated great and was helpful. Would definitely recommend.

    Buster2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • If I could rate this place higher than a five I would. You cannot beat the location and everything is walkable if you’re in town for golf or simply enjoying Inverness. Evan has a nice kitchen and BBQ which we used to cook local lobster and steaks one night. Then a short walk down to the beach for a sunset. Overall the house was in great shape, clean, and the host communicated well. Can’t ask for much more and would love to stay at Evan’s place again.

This modern company house has everything you need for your stay in lovely Inverness. Located in town, you are not far from everything Inverness has to offer including shops, restaurants, Cabot links and Inverness Beach.
In addition to the 2 bedrooms with queens beds, there is a set of bunk beds with a single top bunk and a double bottom bunk in an alcove upstairs.
  • When driving down the road to the home, looks can be initially deceiving. But the moment you open the door to this cute yellow house, you'll enter a beautifully restored and decorated antique home that is so comfortable, inviting, well-stocked, and with beds that easily sleep two couples and two children. The home also has two full baths. Locationwise, it's also great for accessing the Cabot Trail and is close to many amenities. The only thing prospective renters may want to know is that the upstairs is accessed via a traditional 19th century narrow and steep back staircase that could be difficult for someone with mobility issues to navigate. (This renter has a staircase in her own antique house that is very similar, so she felt right at home!)

  • Very close to Cabot Links (within walking distance)

    Peter2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Hands down one of the best Airbnb experiences I’ve ever had. Amber did not miss one single detail, in fact went above and beyond! From the eye masks, bottle of wine...to even a set of weights! It’s like she knew me lol. The place is very clean, and stylish...it feels just like home. Amber was very quick when responding to any questions. Perfect location close to all stores, golf and only a 20-30min drive to the best attractions in Cape Breton. We have an annual girls trip every year, and will definitely be revisiting this place! Thanks Amber :)

  • We had a great week long stay. Amber was very quick to respond to all my questions. This home is very conveniently located, we enjoyed how close it is to the golf course and the beautiful beaches. Very clean and cozy. We did a lot of cooking during our stay and the kitchen was very well equipped with everything we needed. We also enjoyed the decor and books; great personal touch. We would definitely recommend this location to anyone staying in the Inverness area.

  • Nicely updated coal company house (duplex). Great location with several great restaurants and the beach in easy walking distance. Well equipped kitchen with everything we needed to prepare the meals we ate in. Amber is very responsive and recommended the Mabou Farmer's Market on Sunday which was a real treat! If you are looking for a great spot in Inverness I highly recommend the Yellow Company House.

  • We loved our stay here. We made our way through the Maritime provinces but wanted to spend the majority of our time on Cape Breton, so we really were looking to find a nice place to stay. Amy was great about communicating with us from the start. Her apartment is beautiful and located in the quaint town of Inverness. We enjoyed the ability to walk to local cafes, eateries, the bank, and the beach all without having to drive. Her fully equipped kitchen helped us save a little money on our trip by eating in, and although we weren’t looking for a place with a washer and dryer, it was great to be able to do a mid-vacation load of laundry! Everything was perfect and I would highly recommend her place!

  • Amy’s place is perfect! Great space to stay especially if you would also like to make your own food. Every appliance is brand new. Very clean as well. Close to restaurants, grocery and the Cabot golf as well!! We will be returning for sure

  • An amazing little gem! This space is new, funky and functional and the location can’t be beat. We took the beach walk on the boardwalk every morning and made sure to be down there for a sunset too, spectacular. The suite has lots of great amenities and what you don’t have, you can find close by. Check-in was painless and Amy was attentive to questions. We definitely plan to return, maybe every summer!! Loved loved Cape Breton and Inverness.

  • Lovely little cabin with great touches— loved the fireplace, heated blankets and access to a washer and dryer. The bed was very comfortable and the space was super clean— I’m an indoors girl so the fact that it was a cabin was amazing as it didn’t feel that way. Michael helped us to find the place as we were late for check-in. I would highly recommend this cabin!

    Jamie2019-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Michael was a great host and provided very nice accommodation. We loved the experience of staying I the cabin- very cozy and very clean! Michael was very knowledgeable about the area and had many great tips for things to do! Would definitely recommend a stay here!

  • Michael is a great host. We had great conversations on his property. The rustic cabins are in a wonderful location, close to everything in Inverness. Michael had some great suggestions and ideas for us to do while in the area. We look forward to our next stay!

    Jazz2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • Michael’s hospitality exceeded my expectations based upon any Airbnb host I’ve ever stayed with. He made sure to double check we had everything we needed but it turned out he had already thought of everything we could ever ask for! Michael also took the time to speak with us about his life in Canada and his travels. Definitely would recommend for someone who wants a beautiful location to explore the region and jumping off point to begin the Cabot Trail.

    Logan2019-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • Michael is an amazing host, he met us at the cabin, greeting us personally. He gave us tips on where to go / where to eat. The cabin we stayed in was very nicely finished. The place altogether is beautiful, we arrived and the sun was setting and the whole yard was lit up by it. It was truly a sight for sore eyes. The beds were AH-mazing, we all slept very well! The electric blankets were added comfort! All in all, we feel it is Michael (himself) that made the stay worthwhile - he was extremely welcoming, friendly and super accommodating!

    Tristan & Amelia2019-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • Michael is the host you always wish for: kind, patient, full of warmth and on top of communication. We’ve always heard the folks in the East Coast are extra nice, and Michael personifies that wonderful rumour! The accommodations were exactly as we imagined, with touches of warmth and personality everywhere. Anything you need, Michael has already thought miles ahead. Thank you for your hospitality Michael and we hope to see you again!

    Traci2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • The cottages are a perfect and quaint setting for a stay outside of Inverness. The location is beautiful on the hills overlooking the town. Michael has all the amenities covered, and on top of that is a very nice and social person. I couldn’t have asked for more. Top notch place, 6 stars if I could.

Completely renovated old town home. 3 bedrooms. Large, newly furnished living room with satelite t.v. (free wifi), large dining area as well as a newly updated kitchen. Whales have since been spotted from our front deck, the living room while watching the PGA Championship and the upstairs master bedroom. Walking distance to the only life-guarded beach in Inverness, the Cabot Cliffs and Links golf courses, main street coffee shops and local restauraunts.
Very charming home, newly updated top to bottom, in the best location in Inverness.
Walking distance to everything. Morning coffee, evening diner, wine and beer store, beach, golf, trails.
  • This older home is clean, well furnished, comfy beds, spacious bathroom with a claw foot tub and a beautiful shower, however the best feature is the window seat with a million dollar view! Although you are on the main road the home is very quiet. The beach in Inverness is decidedly the BEST beach in Cape Breton. We were happy to cook most of own meals although our last night we went to Route 19 - amazing food and great service.

The Old Homestead is a 4 bedroom home located in the beautiful Southwest Margaree and only a stroll away to the river. The world famous Cabot Trail is 4km away with multiple beaches within a 15 - 20 minute drive. The home is located 15 minutes away from a golfers paradise with Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs golf courses. There are also 2 other 18 hole golf courses within a 40 minute drive, in the communities of Cheticamp and Baddeck. The Margaree river is also famous for its salmon run.
There are no hidden fees. The cost of cleaning and HST(a 15% tax which we are required to charge) are included in the listed price. The only extra charge is the Airbnb listing fee.
This property was once a working farm. Now each year, in the spring months of May and June, the home is used during the gaspereau fishery. Across the road and down the lane, is the southwest branch of the Margaree river where the gaspereau travel upstream to spawn in Lake Ainslie. Pierre fishes the gaspereau commercially during this time. It is a great peaceful place to swim as well as fish.
  • We had a wonderful weekend and The Old Homestead was perfect for us 3 couples! There was ample “everything” and we all slept so well in the quiet country location. It was like staying at “grandmas”. We could walk to the Church Hall where we learned how to Square Dance, and the Coop Grocery was only a 7 min drive away. The darkness at night (few street lights/traffic) was so refreshing when suffering from “city-exhaustion’. Loved it!

    Gail2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great homestead, close to local stores, trails, Margaree River and breath taking scenery. The homestead is a very comfortable and relaxing stay, plus it has every amenity needed for a fantastic stay, thank you Heather and Pierre for your great hospitality and offering your homestead to our family!

    Paul2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at the Old Homestead in the Margaree Valley. We picked this house because my husband wanted to fly fish and this area is famous for that. He was amazed at the number of rivers nearby and the ease in getting into them to fish (unlike other places he has been). He was a bit early for the salmon run but thrilled with the four trout he caught (and released). Heather was very easy to reach for a few questions I had and check in was accurate and simple. It's an older house like pretty much everything in the area but was clean and with thoughtful touches like blueberry muffins and coffee and cream/sugar already there. We cooked in several nights and the kitchen was well stocked with both spices/cooking oil as well as cookware. Bigger house than we needed - we only used the bedroom on the first floor. Good wifi and it was a bonus to have the Amazon fire stock which had several already installed apps like Netflix and others. The house is in a rural part of the island but not too far from a few cities nearby Inverness (15 mins) and Baddeck (40 mins). Of note: the house is closer to the road than it may appear in the photos and the road, while not terribly busy, is still a fairly high-speed road. That may be an issue for those with dogs/children who were thinking that they could be outside somewhat unattended. That said, there is a path across the road that goes down to the Margaree River that is lovely and a perfect walk for the dogs. The island's (province's?) grocery store chain is called The Co-op and there was one five minutes away. Smaller than a typical US supermarket but had all of the essentials and everything we needed. All in all a lovely stay and I would definitely recommend.

    Christine2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed two nights at Heather and Pierre’s place. It has plenty of space (more than enough for our two couples) and an old-time family house feel. There was everything we needed for a comfortable stay. There’s a washer & dryer, a dishwasher and a fully equipped family-style kitchen. We cooked dinner both nights and found everything we needed to prepare our meals, in addition to the groceries we brought. Highly recommended!

    Tim2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • Great spot, very clean and lots of supplies. Would stay again.

    Scott2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Our week long stay at the Homestead was our best ever airbnb experience. We had just come from 3 weeks in NYC area so the quiet solitude of the location was very welcome. It turns out the location was perfect for our desire to visit the Cape Breton area. The Cabot Trail was nearby and took us on daily adventures to beautiful areas. The home was very comfortable, clean and had absolutely everything we needed including welcome muffins! At our request Heather took the time to provide us with information about where to find music venues and we enjoyed several of them. We had only one question while there and Heather responded immediately. Definitely a five star stay in every way!!

Nestled on the south west branch of the Margaree River (famous for it's Atlantic salmon and brook trout fishing), our quiet country cottage is the perfect launching pad for exploring all of the amazing experiences that Cape Breton has to offer.
Spend a week or two or a month in our haven along the Margaree River where time stopped a century ago. Where the last fierce sound of the Gaelic still murmur in the mists of early morning (if you have the ear). A quaint old house with modern amenities where the nearest neighbor is 'across the brook', 'down the road a apiece', or 'up the rugged hills', but as near as a telephone call for a ceilidh or a cup of tea. Throughout the day you may observe soaring eagles flying over the property and alighting on the trees of the river bank behind the house. It's a place where you just can relax, read a book, play music, become an artist or fish till you fall in the river. Some guests who have stayed here have commmmented that it is "a home away from home". We hope if you come, that you too will experience that peace, quiet, and enjoyment of the culture and activities this amazing area has to offer.
You'll love the quiet of a back road in the highland-heart of Cape Breton, but only 30 minutes away through the hills and valleys to Mabou, famous for its talented Scottish musicians and dancers - Inverness by the sea, with its wild beaches, the new 18 hole scenic Cabot Links golf course - one of a kind next to Scotland, and its time-forgotten shops along the main street and to the north along the winding Margaree River, Margaree forks, the sports 'Mecca of Cape Breton'. Enjoy the sights around the Cabot Trail, a visit to Alexander Graham Bell Museum, or to the Fortress of Louisbourg. We can direct you to the hidden vista of Egypt Falls - a veritable Shangri-La known only to the MacFarlane clan until a few decades ago. Nearby attractions: Cabot Trail (Margaree Forks entrance about 15 minutes away) Cabot Links Golf Course (about 20 minutes away) Glenora Distillery (about 20 minutes away) Skyline Trail (about 1 hour 20 minutes away)
  • What a lovely wee place and a great base for fishing the surrounding rivers

  • A very special older home, spacious and cozy at the same time. Felt like being at my great grandmother's but with all the modern conveniences you would need. Bruce and his family were very kind and helpful. And the location was convenient for exploring all of Cape Breton. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to stay again.

  • We travel to Cape Breton often, but this was our first time staying in Margaree. We felt right “at home” in this lovely family home. The house is charming in a tranquil, country setting and is very conveniently located for traveling around the island. Great communication prior to, and during, our stay and the check-in/check-out process was easy. The home retains its Cape Breton charms while providing all the amenities needed to make for a comfortable stay. We would definitely return. Thank you to Bruce and his family for a wonderful stay!

  • I only have words of praise for this house, set in a beautiful location with all the comforts of home found inside. Bruce was great at keeping in touch and making sure that everything was fine for us. When it came time to leave, everyone in our party expressed the wish that we could stay there forever!

    Arlie2018-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Many thanks to Bruce for an opportunity to stay in the house, it had everything we needed! Every day we enjoyed our morning cup of coffee sitting outside looking at the field and listening the birds singing. Every evening we drove to different places along the coast to watch sunsets. The hiking trails in Cape Breton Highlands National Park were amazing! Hope to come back some day to enjoy again the beauty of Cape Breton Island.

  • A beautiful stay and dougie is wonderful

    Hayleigh2019-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Despite the rain and the cold ... this moment was exceptional. We will never forget this experience!

    Marine2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • Dougie’s glamping cabins were absolutely beautiful! They were spotlessly clean and the view was amazing. It was very cold and windy at night so Dougie even brought us extra sleeping bags to stay warm. As a word of caution if you’re a nervous driver the road up to the cabin is quite steep and bumpy but doable. Definitely take it slow!

    Judy2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • This place is incredible! The views, the amenities, and the Cape Breton hospitality Dougie shows makes this space a great getaway. While the winds were high when my mother and I stayed, Dougie and his partner went out of their way to ensure we were okay and had enough blankets and warm food in our bellies to get through the night. The space has everything you need to have a great glamping experience. Just remember to bring coffee and you’ll have a fabulous time!

    Lindsey2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • This is just want my friends and I wanted. We enjoyed the beautiful views of Cape Breton away from the city but had just enough comfort because we are not strong campers. Make sure you pick a sunny day, so you can watch the beautiful sunset! 5/5

    Ethan2019-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation was exactly as shown. The location is great, with amazing views over the ocean!

    Adam2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Glamping off the Beaton Path is absolutely fantastic! The views are nothing short of stunning!! The craftsmanship of the tents are so beautiful. Our cabin was clean and cozy. We enjoyed a lovely dinner at a campfire before the stars took the sky. It was so serene and peaceful. The location was very close to Inverness town, well outfit with restaurants and essentials. Follow Dougie’s directions from town, otherwise you’ll end up on a chewy dirt road for longer than necessary (our own mistake).

Living Small in this Tiny House right on the Lake Ainslie is Really About Living Big This brand new „Tiny Loon“ house is 20 feet long , 8.5 feet wide, 13.5 feet high, and is situated on a secluded private property right at the private beach, next to an old uninhabited cottage feeding it with power and water. It is only 13 km from vibrant Inverness with famous beach and golf course, super market, boat tours, cafés, restaurants, pharmacy, banks, hospital etc.
Tiny houses aren’t just for hipsters and millennials anymore. As Americans and Canadians have taken an interest in tidying up, downsizing their belongings and living more efficiently, the tiny house movement has gone mainstream, and it’s inspiring people of all ages to embrace small spaces. Our new tiny house is placed on one of the most magical places we have found in many years traveling around the world in our boat. It sits just a stone throw away from Nova Scotia biggest fresh water Lake Ainslie, facing northeast an incredible sunrise lake view. Its unspoiled quiet will help you to experience life with open eyes and a new energy. It is back to basics. It is heaven on earth. Listen to the Loons and many many Bald Eagles watching for trout. Swim in the crystal clear water to the nearby perfect sandy beach where mussels draw their work of art in the sandy soil.
We are finishing our private tiny house interior on the property next door. If you are interested in construction you can see how to DIY
  • We loved Tiny Loon, it was such a unique experience! The space itself is gorgeous with the most beautiful environment and spectacular views! The location is perfect for traveling around the island to experience everything it has to offer. Highly recommend staying at Tiny Loon for your next getaway!

  • The Tiny House is perfect for a quiet break from everyday life. I have also made some trails in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, which is really beautiful and only 1-2 hours drive from the house. By car, you can also go to the village for shopping or eating out pretty quickly. The cottage is beautifully decorated. I found everything I needed for living and cooking. And the view of the lake is really beautiful, I could see some beautiful sunsets and sunrises. Robert or his daughter greeted me warmly and were always available for questions. In addition, the cute dog Hector came by every day he was there to be cuddled. So do not worry if he gets a little excited about you, he's just happy to see you and hopes for a caress: D In short, I had a great week at the Tiny House! For nature lovers or people looking for some peace and relaxation absolutely recommended.

  • Amazing view and tranquility. Unique experience in Tiny House. Need to be agile to get up and down loft bed but smaller bed available on ground level

    Lisa2019-08-07T00:00:00Z
  • The Tiny house on the lake is very sweet and the hosts were great. We enjoyed swimming in the lake and at the nearby beach in Inverness (bring water shoes as there are rocks!) The location is a comfortable drive to the Highlands National Park for a day trip. Everything we needed for cooking was in the house which was great. Dinners on the balcony overlooking the lake were delicious.

  • This was tiny as the name implies, but very pleasant with lovely views of the lake.

  • We had an amazing stay at Bob’s tiny house. The location on Lake Ainslie was perfect. The house had all we needed for a great and relaxing weekend away!

  • A beautiful experience! The host's daughter was very welcoming and warm. Everything is new inside. You must be a bit reckless to get to the beach, but it's superb. The BBQ is a plus! Excellent communication with the owners. +++

A rustic artist/owner built home in a picturesque setting overlooking beautiful Lake Ainslie. The house is bursting with character, and has evolved through numerous expansions and renovations over its storied 30-year history. The airy open-format main floor features a fully equipped kitchen with gas stove and full-size refrigerator. The main floor common area surrounds a handmade spiral staircase made from trees cut from the yard. A wood burning stove separates the kitchen from the central living space. A step through a curtain-door off the main area reveals a bright room with a futon couch, and a TV with an extensive VHS library. There is also an old piano, and guitar which are at your disposal, albeit a little out of tune. Attached to this room is a bathroom with unique homemade shower-stall featuring a hola-hoop. Through the bathroom, and also attached byway of a curtain to the main area, is a sunny dining room. The second floor houses two upstairs bedrooms and a bathroom with a large claw-foot tub. The main bedroom, which offers a queen sized bed (real bed) is connected by a window and archway to a study. The other bedroom has a double bed (futon mattress). If you investigate in the lower-are of this room you will find lots of games, books, and toys to entertain younger guests. If additional beds are required the futon couch in the downstairs TV room is also available. A large grassed yard is perfectly suited for games of badminton or croque. There is also a large studio on the property, where I reside and will be readily available to answer any questions you may have. 5 minute walk to the lake. 20 minute drive to the ocean at the town of Inverness 20 minute drive to the Bras d’Or Lake, a massive inland sea. 1.5 hour drive to the famous Cabot trail, one of the most scenic drives in North America. Enjoy the solitude of your escape with vintage dial-up speed internet and intermittent cell-phone coverage. As a rural cottage we aim to conserve water reduce our waste.
The cottage itself is centrally located to Cape Breton's historic and beautiful west coast, and is adjacent to the Ceilidh trail, providing excellent access to local music venues. It is a 20-30 minute drive from some of the best beaches on Cape Breton (Chimney Cove, West Mabou, and Inverness). Experience dramatic scenery and vistas, swim in the temperate waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and eat at Mabou’s Red Shoe Pub, truly the best restaurant around. While in Mabou pop over to Port Hood to buy fresh-caught seafood at the Fisherman's Co-Op or up to the Bistro at Chéticamp.
  • Such a nice place we decided to stay another night. Enjoyed the huge cassette and VHS collection, and the wood fireplace. Loved all the artwork and character of the house!

  • Ken’s place is absolutely incredible. So cozy, homey, and eccentric, there are so many things to look at it’s like living in an art museum. Ken and Mark’s hospitality made us feel so welcome and right at home. We will 1000% be coming back in the summer.

  • Unique cozy spot. Amazing place to sit back and relax.

    Matthew2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • This place is pure awesomeness. Unique decoration, a very scenic location, wooden stove, and tape and VHS players make the stay very unique and enjoyable. It's also well-equipped with everything one might need for the trip. And Ken is a very welcoming host. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone going on a Cabot trail adventure.

    Alexey2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • An eccentric and quirky delight! Ken has created a house that will perk up your inner child. Rustic and cozy, like something you’d describe from a storybook. We enjoyed this gem with our 2 year old and 2 month old. Can’t wait to go back!

    Joseph2019-10-02T00:00:00Z
  • A very gracious host. A most fascinating abode with all the exciting quirks of a true artist. Loved the location

    David2019-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • Ken's home is indeed charming and full of art - it's like staying in a gallery! He started the wood stove for us on 2 unseasonably cold nights, and was great to chat with. His home is located in a perfect location for exploring both the Cabot and Ceilidh Trails on Cape Breton. The directions he provided were very helpful and accurate.

    Hayley2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • Ken's house is a delightfully quirky and funky space. It was comfortable, clean, and well-equipped. The location is perfect - very quiet and peaceful and a short drive to the shore where you can find little towns with restaurants, live music, bike and kayak rentals, swimming. It is a little bit of a longer but still very manageable drive to the Cabot Trail and amazing hiking. Ken is super friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. I highly recommend this place.

  • Comfortable house in a good location to see Cape Breton. Beautiful lake view off the deck. Would stay here again.

    Mary2019-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • I really recommend staying in this house, it was perfect. We spent 7 nights at Mary’s house with my husband and our 1-year old baby. The house is very pleasant, had everything we needed. The deck with the view on the lake is stunning. We had barbecue every night, cooked a lot (the kitchen is fully equipped with everything) and could have breakfast outside with this beautiful and peaceful view. The beds are very comfortable, and it is so silent. The house is also perfect for a large family or group of friends, as it has many bedrooms and enough space. The location of the house is great as it is very central between the Cabot Trail, Inverness, Mabou and the other side where you have Baddeck, Sydney and Louisbourg. The communication with Mary was very easy, she was very responsive, and so helpful giving us many tips with things to do and visit in the region. She was also so kind to leave us a basket with wine and some food when we arrived. Last but not least, just a few days before our arrival, I have asked if she had an high chair for the baby, and she was able to find one for us, which was so nice and helpful. We really felt home, which is exactly what we needed for this vacation.

    Sarah2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Loved the house! We easily fit two families (11 people) and didn't step on each other's toes. Indoor and outdoor eating options and the view from the deck at sunset is amazing. The round indoor dining table is ideal for evening board games. Location is great - beautiful quick drives to the ocean. Very clean and stocked with everything you'd need to cook at home.

    Matt2019-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • The house is clean and very organized. If you love to cook, the kitchen is well equipped—- We went there on July 1st and since it was Canada Day, Mary told us that the stores are all mostly closed. We were surprised that Mary provided us with free groceries just to make sure we have food by the time we get to her place. We really appreciate that. The view of the lake from the deck was spectacular! - able to take great sunset pictures and stargazing at night! The private road going to the lake house is steep- make sure your vehicle is ready for that. We drove there on a 12 seater van and it was a bit of a challenge for us though as we went there on a rainy day too. We already told the owner that was the only issue but other than that- everything was great!

THIS COTTAGE CONTAINS ONE QUEEN BED AND ONE PULL OUT DOUBLE SOFA BED. When night falls there is no better soporific than the sound of the surf, audible from all 41 housekeeping cottages. Affordably priced, the cottages comfortably house up to four people and are tailored to meet day-to-day living needs. An equipped kitchen, full bath, living room and cable TV are standard to each cottage--as is the expansive deck complete with picnic table and Adirondack chairs. For those who prefer simpler accommodations, the Village also boasts a 41-unit campground with serviced (water, electricity and dumping station) and tenting sites. Whether you choose a wooded or ocean view lot, all sites come with a picnic table, fireplace and easy access to washrooms, laundry facilities and, of course, the beach.

  • The landscape of the house is beautiful, facing the lake. Get up in the morning to see the bunny. The room is comfortable and the location is close to the scenic spot. Driving in the past, there are gas stations and supermarkets on the road, and life is convenient. The kitchen is fully equipped for easy cooking. Suitable for 2 families and spacious. The landlord communicated smoothly, we stayed for a few days and the washing machine broke down. The landlord asked relatives to help wash the clothes and fold the clothes. And immediately bought a new washing machine. I am very grateful to the landlord for handling the problem in a timely manner and responding quickly.

The beds and pillows are very comfortable and we loved the simplicity of the cabin. Beautiful scenery and interesting story behind the property (the old school house). We hope to return again!

  • Michael is of outstanding hospitality; attentive and always in front, welcoming us with gifts! Its concept offers a unique experience in nature while being in great comfort: the cabins are moved in nine, bed and mattress included! With only 2 cabins: a lot of privacy, while having the chance to socialize. Michael was very accommodating with our electric car: we made it easier for him to use his equipment. Thank you Michael!

  • Michael's place is terrific! Very comfortable beds and easy to find. Michael is a talented photographer well traveled. He fun to talk with and very considerate. I would definately ask to stay again...anytime I am near Inverness.😎

  • It was our first family road trip to Atlantic Canada, and out of all the Airbnb's we stayed at, it was the best! Welcoming, thoughtful, stylish, comfortable, lovely touches, great location and the most amazing sleep we've ever had. Before we came, I read some of the previous reviewers and their suggestions for Michael re: adding a fan for those warm days and a carbon monoxide detector, and he delivered! Michael even sought out a friend's help to strengthen the Wifi connection in our cabin upon our arrival. Bonus! :D The Nikas family truly made our stay in Inverness, Nova Scotia a memorable one. We highly recommend!
