Places to stay in West Auckland
The Regent's Chambers is a marvellous and comfortable place to stay, with super king beds, Netflix & Amazon Video, board games, self check-in and breakfast ingredients (except for milk!). There's a garden for relaxing in during nice weather (it happens!) and a real home-from-home feeling. There's free parking just outside the flat and it's a five minute walk into town (explore the castle and new gallery spaces), ten min to the station and ten min to Kynren. Durham is just a half hour away.
The kitchen is country style, with oak worktop and cream cabinets. It's fully stocked with basic necessities (tea selection, real coffee, olive oil, salt, pepper, spices and herbs). There is also bread, spreads and cereals on offer (though you need to bring milk). The bathroom has a separate shower and bath. Don't worry if you forget your shampoo, conditioner or shower gel as it's all provided for you. There are two big bedrooms with super king size beds and pillowtop mattresses, very soft 400 thread count sheets and feather pillows. The living room has a 49" Smart TV with freeview. You can watch Super HD Netflix, Amazon Video and BBC iPlayer too - the flat has its own Netflix and Amazon accounts so no need for a subscription. There's a large double sofabed (14cm full double memory foam mattress) and a single daybed (3000 pocket pillowtop mattress). Both beds are super comfy and have lots of pillows and cushions for maximum cosiness. There are double curtains in the bedrooms and living room, which all look out onto the street - the voile is to ensure privacy (but still lets in the light) plus lined blackout curtains on top. The flat is on the ground floor so it's more accessible for people with limited mobility, but note there are three shallow steps up to the front door so it's not suitable for wheelchairs. Parking is easy - there's lots available on Etherley Lane and though there are single yellow lines around the corners there are no other restrictions (except don't park in front of other people's houses as it annoys the neighbours!). It's best to park just outside the side gate on Etherley Lane, where you first check in. During Kynren days there is parking enforcement on the street but parking permits are provided in the flat for you to use. You can use smart check in to get into the flat with a code I give you at booking, so you can arrive whenever is convenient, even in the small hours of the morning. Have a lovely stay!
Known as the gateway to Weardale, Bishop Auckland is a bustling market town in the Vale of Durham, standing high above a meander in the River Wear with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. Walk fifteen minutes from the flat straight into the beautiful grounds of the magnificent Auckland Castle, the country residence of the Prince Bishops for more than 900 years. And don't miss the annual Bishop Auckland Food Festival which takes place in the castle grounds every April. It's AMAZING. Surrounding the Castle are the 800 acres of the Bishop's Deer Park - a great place for a summer picnic or an autumnal stroll through vividly coloured parkland. It's open all year round and is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The town is set for major developments over the next few years, with a new welcome building at Auckland Castle, a new Museum extension, an institute of Spanish art and culture, and the redevelopment of the 17th Century Walled Garden which will feature stunning new glasshouses providing 'garden rooms' restaurant and event spaces. The town burst into life in 2016 as Eleven Arches presented the first season of ‘Kynren – an epic tale of England’ - the £31 million open-air live action night show that attracted more than 100,000 visitors during the summer. Kynren returns in 2017 to take audiences on an epic storytelling journey through 2,000 years. Bishop Auckland's historic town centre has a thriving arts and cultural offering, with the Bishop Auckland Town Hall home to a superb library, cinema, theatre and arts complex. Plus, the town has more than 200 shops - head for Bondgate for boutiques and specialist shops that you won’t find on the high street. A mile from the town are the remains of Binchester Roman Fort, home to the best preserved Roman military bath house in Britain. And at Escomb, you can see one of the finest examples of early Christian architecture in Northern Europe at the restored 7th Century Escomb Saxon Church. It's one of the first churches in the whole of the UK, so not really one to miss. Don't forget also the National Shildon Railway Museum for train enthusiasts. Shildon was pretty much the birthplace of railways so do please go and check out an engine or two. Bishop Auckland is very well placed for trips to lots of local castles, the North Pennines and day trips to Durham (half hour drive).
  • Good location near town centre. Great comfortable space. Comfy beds.

  • I only stayed at Emma’s for one night, in preparation for an Exam I had in Bishop Auckland. It was the perfect place to stay to relax and get myself ready. I can see that this apartment would be great for larger groups too, including families, looking to get away and have some quality time.

  • The Regent's Chambers was a lovely flat and had all the amenities we needed. Emma was a fantastic host with great communication and a very handy check in video! The flat is about a 5min walk from the main high street and there's two big supermarkets a few minutes further. The town was lovely though it was just a shame we couldn't get out and about much because of the storm. If you're eating in Bishop Auckland I definitely recommend Beedles Chippy and Panda Panda. We managed to make a quick stop (40mins away) in the North Pennines on our drive back home. If you only have a little bit of time, I highly recommend the High Force falls. It was absolutely stunning and feels like you've been transported to somewhere in North America! I wish we could have spent a lot longer there!

  • A great place to stay if you’re in the area. All we needed and more. Will definitely stay here again next time we visit.

  • Lovely accommodation plenty of space for a large family. Very comfortable beds.

    Julia2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed for an evening for a work trip, it was in an ideal location for us. It is quite a big space and could have definitely stayed for more than one day. Garden is secure if you have a dog, cannot hear much noise from the flat above. Nice little touches like cereals, butter, bread which you dont get from many air b and b's. Thanks Emma

Set in a conservation area of Bishop Auckland, this spacious and welcoming flat is in a great location for visits to Auckland Castle, exploring the Pennines and visits to Durham. Kynren is also a short walk away. After a great day out come back to the gorgeous, light-filled rooms, cosy fireplace, comfortable sofas, speedy internet, super king size beds and spa bath. Couples, individuals, business travellers and families with kids (any age) are all very welcome.
The flat has two large bedrooms with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space for your belongings. The super king size beds (6ft wide), one with 2000 Pocket Spring Memory Foam Mattress and the other with 3000 Pocket Pillow Top Spring Mattress will give you a restful night's sleep. In the sizable living room, the comfy full double sofa bed with memory foam mattress is accompanied by the chaise longue, cosy armchair and mahogany dresser and corner cabinet. The 49" 4K smart TV is in the corner, connected to the fastest internet available in the area (up to 74Mb) and a TalkTalk TV Box allowing you to pause and rewind 80 freeview channels. You can watch Super HD Netflix, Amazon Video and BBC iPlayer too - the flat comes with its own Netflix and Amazon accounts so no need for a subscription. The sofa bed is a full double memory foam fold-out version, so no uncomfortable crease down the middle that you get with clic-clac beds. There is plenty of storage for your clothes and belongings in the dresser, allowing you to properly unpack as you wish. In addition to the usual central heating (new radiators installed throughout), there is the very cosy gas fire in the living room, which is easy to operate and comes with children's safe guard for those of you with little ones coming to visit. The heating is easily controlled throughout the flat with a Nest thermostat - which also means the apartment will be nice and warm ready for your arrival. If you prefer more tropical temperatures there are also three electric heaters in both the bedrooms and living room. The dining kitchen is well stocked, both with essentials and with good cooking equipment. There are pots and pans of course, but there's also a slow cooker, steamer, weighing scale and juicer. When you arrive you will find real coffee for the cafetiere and a selection of teas. Herbs and oil are also included. The kitchen has a slimline dishwasher and washing machine too, which will help a lot for those intending to stay longer than a couple of days. There is bread in the freezer, plus a selection of spreads and cereals. The fridge has a water dispenser, butter and a bottle of prosecco! (You will need to bring your own milk, though). The bathroom has a corner bath with whirlpool jets. There is a standing shower (in the bath) so the bathroom is great for a quick shower before work or for long, luxurious bathing! There is a backyard too for some outdoor, private space away from the street. This is shared with the flat below, which is also airbnb. Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions :)

  • We had a great stay. Emma had everything you needed in the place and was a great host. A lovely flat and very easy to get to from the station. Thanks for having us!

  • As so many previous reviewers have said, this is a huge flat which manages to be super toasty. It's a short walk into the town centre which is well served with shops, cafes. takeaways etc as well as some new cultural attractions. We didn't have a bad meal in Bishop Auckland, and would give a special mention to the cafe at the castle: you have to have a ticket for the castle to enter, however the Auckland pass is valid from purchase until the end of 2020, and we'll most certainly be trying to arrange a return visit. Fifteas in the town centre was also a big hit with our children who really enjoyed their 'afternoon tea'. In the flat we loved the electronic lock and nest heating controls: we didn't use the cooking facilities much as there's too many great local eateries to try, but everything was clean and it was a great budget friendly place to stay.

  • Jimmy and Anita’s farm was a great Airbnb find. Spacious accommodation, warm and spotlessly clean. Very well equipped with some provisions left for us . A real home from home. Wish we had time to say longer.

    Joan2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • The house is not far from the roadside and it is easy to find. Except for the smell of the decoration, the owner was very attentive. The picture books and toys for children are very good. The beds were enough and comfortable. The house is very spacious and the view outside is also very beautiful. I hope to have the opportunity to go back for the weekend in the future.

  • A lovely snug property. I visited alone but it is a tardis of a property so will easily cater for a family. Some lovely touches, good communication and a personal visit to check all ok. Great hosts

  • Great location on a farm near Crook in County Durham. Absolutely quiet and very dark at night. On my two nights, the starry sky was stunning. The house is among a group of others on a working farm. It's also off the main road, so very peaceful. I found it a great place to escape from London for couple of days and to explore the surrounding countryside. Check in was easy, WiFi was fast and reliable. Parking adjacent to the house was safe and secure. Nice to have an oven and hobs to cook, a decent large fridge freezer and microwave - perfect for making your own meals. Lots of local info in leaflets in the house too.

OS maps can be borrowed from us to plan activities and we'll help with advice on local attractions wherever possible.
  • Dani is a fantastic host. The cottage is very cosy and she left lots of lovely little touches everywhere. From the fully stocked supplies for the fire to breakfast in the fridge. We really enjoyed our time here and hope to stay again! Nothing was too much trouble and she was quick to respond when I had a query. The locations was great, close to the forest and walking distance to the local pub. Thanks again Dani! :)

    Lola2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage has a lot of rustic charm with exposed beams and an open fire. It has all the facilities you would need as well as nice touches like fuel for the fire (which was alight when arrived !) and breakfast items for you first morning. The village is very quiet with just a pub (good beer and good food) a couple of minutes walk away.

    Jerry2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Cosy, cute, warm and lovely little house. Spent a very nice night in a great little part of Co. Durham. It felt like home.

  • Good Stay. Thanks Emma

  • Great cottage loved the fire and little touches definitely going too visit again x

    Emma2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely little cottage, having the real fire was a lovely treat, as it was really cold on the night time. The host even left us some supplies to make breakfast. Would definitely recommend this place.

    Wayne2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely little one bed cottage in a lovely little village. Local pub close by and dog friendly. Having a lit fire when we arrived was amazing, thank you. Added extras were great also, like breakfast items and bathroom essentials like wipes etc. We had a great 2 night break away with our daughter and dogs. Host very responsive and helpful.

    Ashley2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • Dani’s cottage is the perfect location for a peaceful break. It definitely saved us from the Christmas madness. Everything about this place eludes charm. From start to finish Dani couldn’t have been more helpful. From walking in to a lit open fire helping warm us on a cold day, to exploring the quaint cottage to find more thoughtful touches like fresh milk and bread and the Christmas decorations; everything was perfect. The ideal setting for walkers and dog owners.

  • The pictures of the apartment don't do the place justice as its larger than it looks. The apartment was clean, well furnished and comfortable (the beds were extremely comfy). The hosts thoughtfully leave cereals, milk, tea, coffee and sugar for their guests. So when we arrived it was brilliant to be able to have a cup of tea after the long journey without having to go to the shops. There is a well stocked Spar next door and 2 massive supermarkets (Tesco and Sainsburys) 5 mins drive away if you need additional supplies. The apartment block is very secure and there is an undercover parking space assigned to the apartment. I found the parking space a little tight as i have a toddler to get out of my car (which is wide anyway), but there was ample parking on the road which was an additional couple of steps, so parking is not an issue if 2 cars were visiting. I could also see the car from the apartment window. The apartment was perfect for our needs and I will definitely be returning.

    Claire2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Really clean. Hand Spar shop next door. Didn't need ear plugs. Bed was really comfortable.

  • Clean and tidy, ideal for our needs, would stay again next time we are in the area.

  • Despite being outside Bishop Auckland which is the city of reference, the accommodation is very well served by public transport, bus 6, which connects Cockfield to Durham (county seat), passing through the Bishop Auckland bus station. This means that from West Auckland where Lynn's apartment is located, it is easy to reach the beautiful areas at the foot of the Pennines as well as the sea of Seaham or Hartlepool. Lynn's apartment is very functional and comfortable. Lynn and David are really very kind and helpful and so we will be back.

    Marco2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • The apartment was a perfect place for me to stay whilst visiting my daughter and grandson. Collecting keys and getting in was very straight forward and I really appreciated having a private parking space. The place felt cosy and had everything I needed. As others have said there was a little bit of street noise at the front in the lounge but the back where the bedrooms are is very quiet and I didn't get disturbed at all. The place was very clean and the bed very comfy. I would definitely stay again. Thanks for everything Emma.

Recently refurbished miners cottage in the hamlet of Hummerbeck, light and bright offering great comfort and easy access to many local attractions. Close to all the major supermarkets gives plenty of choice. Enjoy a little luxury with our superking master bedroom with the versatility of bunk beds and sleeping up to six guests with a quality sofa bed. Perfect for a short break, holiday or business trip. Your dog is welcome too so the whole family can come. Parking is directly opposite the cottage
Located on the A68 so please note there will be some traffic noise but it's mostly quite at night. The cottage is almost 120 years old and has low head space on the stairs, so take care particularly if you are tall.
Ideal if you are visiting Kynren, not far from Durham City and 30/40 minutes from Newcastle. Beamish museum is a great day out for all the family and Locomotion at Shildon there are many other attractions. Great local walks or cycling on pathways and bridleways or drive to the Pennines.
  • Me and a couple of mates stayed here whilst visiting Hamsterly forest. This is a lovely little place, modern, comfy and spotlessly clean! It has all the amenities you need and more. Communication was great and check in a doddle, couldn't fault it at all and will be staying here again next time we visit the area. Thanks Steve and Lynne for an even better than anticipated stay 🙂

  • This place is fabulous. It is spotless and gorgeous. Much more lovely than the photos suggest. It is unbelievably well equipped. Very sweet touches everywhere. We also enjoyed a lovely walk on the bridle path just along from the cottage.

  • Steve and Lynne are amazing hosts. The property is clean and immaculately presented. I loved all the little extra touches like a complimentary bottle of wine and biscuits. They even put up a small Christmas tree to make it festive. I would whole heartedly recommend this property to anyone needing to stay in the Bishop Auckland area.

  • My husband and I went for the Valentines weekend and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The house was perfect for the two of us. It was located about a mile from supermarkets and general stores. The host were extremely kind and very prompt. Amy's husband deserves a note specifically as at one time he actually came to the house to help us with the heating which we found to be very kind. They also kept a welcome basket for us with goodies :-) highly recommend the stay!

  • We had a wonderful first new year as a married couple staying here. The property was well thought through. It was modern, clean, well-equipped and had lots of extra finishing touches. The hamper with champagne and festive treats was very special. The key box made check-in and out very easy. Lots of nice walks nearby and we had a lovely visit to Durham during our stay. We would definitely recommend this property and it was very good value for money.

  • For us a this was like home from home, everything you could need was provided thoughtfully. Fully equipped to relax and enjoy your stay from the moment you get through the door. We had two boys with us and they loved the board games supplied, the two TV’s and having their own football field just out back. We recommend the Rose hill Retreat. G&N

  • Dyane and her partner are kindest hosts. They will do their absolute best to make sure you have everything you need for a comfortable stay. The attitude I experienced was one of welcome and true generosity. The room is lovely, bright and totally suitable for my needs, and the bed is the most comfortable I have slept in in my year of traveling Britain. The bathroom is a delight. I definitely recommend this air bnb, and will stay here again if I am in the area.

Our house, Whispering Waters, contains a private, contemporary two-room apartment suite, with its own private access via an exclusive south-facing deck, 21 mtrs above the tree-lined River Tees. Lying in bed, it's as if you’re in a treehouse with the treetops visible outside the window. Situated in Lower Teesdale (on the A67, between Barnard Castle and Darlington - around 7 miles/11km from each), Whispering Waters is a house without neighbours, immediately adjacent to, and above the River Tees.
The suite comprises a double bedroom with king-sized double bed, a modern shower room, and a living room. The latter has tea and coffee making facilities, a small fridge containing fresh milk, water, juice, and light continental-style breakfast (please let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements). The lounge area can be provided with a foldout single bed. If you need that, let us know and we'll see what we can arrange. There is a TV and free WIFI.
The village of Gainford is a five minute walk away with a general shop, a butcher, post office, hairdressers, cafe, fish and chip shop and a pub. There's also a pretty village green and other beautiful walks along the river. There are a number of quality restaurants less than ten minutes drive, including the only 2* Michelin restaurant in the North East, The Raby Hunt. Other local attractions (all within a fifteen minute drive) include the independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants in the Teesdale town of Barnard Castle, which also houses the amazing Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle (a full-sized French chateau in a medieval English market town). The remarkable Raby Castle is also close by. Darlington town centre (with its main-line railway station) is a twenty minute drive away, as is the North Yorkshire market town of Richmond. Ten minutes beyond Barnard Castle, into upper Teesdale, you enter an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and what is known as England's Last Wilderness, which includes one of Britain’s highest waterfalls, High Force. There are wonderful walks all over Teesdale, with some spectacular views.
  • I would highly recommend this stay as bill and the surrounding area are amazing and definitely worth the low price they carge.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Bill's place. The location was perfect for what we planned to do, from taking trips into Barnard Castle, up to High Force and exploring the local area. The place was easy to find, just a short distance from a friendly village, with even nicer fish and chips. We found the communication to be good in the lead up to our stay, so we knew exactly what to do on our arrival. The privacy was good, and there were lots of nice touches throughout the rooms. We would really recommend Bill's place!

The Pink House is a unique holiday cottage: small enough for a romantic weekend; big enough for a family holiday. The decor is a quirky blend of the rustic and the industrial with the addition of driftwood artifacts made by the owner. (Please view the photographs). Pricing starts at £80.00 per night for up to four guests. For each additional guest there is a charge of £20.00 per night. There is no charge for the hot tub.
The Pink House was built in the 19th century to house employees of the Weardale railway. Originally a two up two down terraced cottage with an outside toilet, it has been extended and improved and now has nine rooms and two bathrooms. The kitchen is spacious, well equipped and includes a range cooker. The dining room can seat up to 12 and has a smart TV. The living room has a wood burner, a TV and an extensive DVD collection. On the first and second floors are the five bedrooms.
Wear Valley Junction is a small rural hamlet in the Durham countryside. It is a mile and half from Witton le Wear, three miles from Bishop Auckland and nine miles from Durham City. The Weardale railway passes through, 100 yards from the cottage. Alongside the line is a path to Witton le Wear and a bridle path popular with walkers and horse riders runs past the front of Engineman's Terrace to Howden le Wear. Low Barns nature reserve is a short walk away. Neighbours run a small holding and keep sheep, pigs, hens, ducks and turkeys - often to be seen in the fields at the front and rear of the terrace. Wear Valley Junction has a thriving wild bird population and many common species can be seen.
  • Toms house is amazing! Super clean and very quirky! We all loved our stay, pictures do not do this house justice there is so much space great for big family’s! The hot tub is lovely! Very friendly host and easy to find So close to nature it is just beautiful!

    Julie2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely stunning house! Had a Great walk to the pub and then back to the house for another dip in the hot tub. Would definitely book again.

    Helen2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful pink cottage with all modern amenities- very well equipped kitchen, dining area, two bathrooms and several comfortable bedrooms. Having a large collection of DVDs and a log burner in the lounge was a real plus on a stormy day. Use of the new, alpine hot tub was also a treat, even on a cold, wintery evening; set in a little, private courtyard with rolling fields behind. The changing hut made it easy to store robes and dry off. The cottage in a lovely rural position, on a small track, but is within easy driving distance of Durham. Tom, made us feel very welcome without being intrusive. This ‘home from home’ is great value for money; even more so if you are within a larger group as I believe it can sleep 10+. It is well worth a visit.

  • I unexpectedly needed to help out some family in Crook, so booked Carol's place quite last minute. It was ideally located for exploring the surrounding area, and it was a really comfortable place to relax after being out and about all day. I would recommend taking your warmest pyjamas as the heating is on a timer and so it is cold at night. The check-in/-out process was easy.

  • Lovely old house in a lovely area. Little tricky to find in the dark but Paul’s dad waited for me out on the road so I wouldn’t miss the turn. Very thoughtful. Beautiful room. Comfy bed. Hot shower. Couldn’t have asked for more really. Great stay and I would stay again. Xx

  • Everything about this Airbnb was perfect. Paul replied to emails instantly fixing up my arrival and was there to meet me. The Edwardian house is large and grand. The bedroom is enormous, the bed comfortable, lovely view from the window. The kitchen is well equipped. WiFi. In all I highly recommend this property. Be warned, though, that the large monkey puzzle tree (araucaria) is no longer there! This being the landmark I was looking out for I drove past the house.

    Joanna2019-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • Paul was a great host and dropped us off at a nearby friends house. Paul is friendly and knowledgeable about the local area. His house is lovely.

    Ian2019-05-12T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful, comfortable place to stay with good facilities. Paul was great with communication and his dad Trevor was very helpful letting me in and showing me round. Had two lovely dogs (Jasper and Paddy) to keep me company :) Would definitely revisit if in that neck of the woods again. Highly recommend.

    Alexandra2018-11-29T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely, spacious, characterful house with two very affectionate dogs. We had the place to ourselves as Paul was away and we felt very much at home, eating in and spending the evening snuggled on the sofa with the pooches. The main issue for us when looking for accommodation was secure storage for our mountain bikes, and Paul's place is perfectly geared up for this. It's also less than a 10-minute drive to Hamsterley Forest, so all in all it worked brilliantly for us. Thanks again for sharing your home!

    Sarah2018-10-24T00:00:00Z

Hamsterley Forest, Raby Castle, Barnard Castle, High Force, Bishop Auckland and Kynren all within a short drive. With a ten minute walk to Cockfield, there is a friendly local pub, shops, butchers, takeaway and newsagent.
Our little cottage has just been refurbished, with underfloor heating throughout the ground floor making sure the house is always at a cozy temperature. The downstairs space has been maximized using a spiral staircase to get you upstairs to the big open-plan bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen has been extended making room for a dishwasher, washer/dryer and plenty of storage for lots of foods! We have a bbq that guests are able to use when they please, we just ask that you make sure to put the cover back on once you have finished with it. • Fantastic, beautiful and stylish little terrace / cottage. Beautifully clean which always brings a smile to my face. We will be back to spend some more time at this stunningly presented little gem.

    Michael2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Emily's place is lovely it's just the right size so you don't feel on top of each other but you still get that cozy cottage feel with all the little extras. The underfloor heating was a dream, the bed was super comfy and the TV was easy to use. Wish we could have stayed longer than one night. The garden is also perfect for dogs but just be careful if you have an escape artist! As it is semi open at the back which leads onto an open field which is enclosed and has no livestock in it. Hope to stay again in the summer, when the weather gets better! 😊

    Megan2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • A great little location for some well needed R and R! The property was spotless and the thoughtful personal touches by Emily were very gratefully received!

  • This is our third stay at David and Lynn’s home. Their home is a perfect family getaway. With all the basic comforts and more, it’s ideal for a holiday. Easy access to public transport makes for a trouble free holiday. There’s plenty to do in town: walks by the river, castle and museum visits. Stanley Jefferson is a nice place for a meal with children ( kids are allowed until 21:00 hrs). Gregory’s and Chittocks were two nice local groceries. The coffee shop at the railway station has good breakfast.

    Jason2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • Great location. Loads of space. Water pressure amazing for shower (and kitchen). Fantastic communication with hosts Emma and David. Really quick and accurate. Thank you so much, we had a good time. Recommend Gabrielle’s for dinner, walkable along the high street.

    Valerie2019-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • Great little cottage, ideally located for walking into the developing centre of Bishop Auckland. Fantastic location for visiting Kynren either by foot for the energetic or close to the bus station for the less so. It is a recent purchase by the owners so it will develop as time allows.

    simon2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Nice little house, good views, nice and quiet although very near the centre of town.

    Annette2019-07-04T00:00:00Z
  • Hillside Cottage is a very cosy and well equipped property. It is located within a short walk to town and local attractions. The communication with the host was great. Definitely recommend the place.

    Sebastian2019-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very pleasant stay and the location is very good - short walking distance into town. The house is very cosy and they have everything you need in the kitchen for an easy home from home stay. Lynn/David also provide basic things like bread, porridge, milk, tea and coffee which helped on arrival a lot from a long drive :) Thank you very much again

  • Gemma is a great host and very attentive with super speedy replies! We went on a couples getaway without two fur babies for 2 nights. We wanted great walks on our doorstep ✅ and a cosy cottage to get back to ✅, this place has it all! Highly recommend, especially for dog parents and this place even has a doggy dressing gown! A few steps from the gate is a gorgeous walk down along a stream, a short drive away is barnard castle and high force/low force which I strongly recommend. Would definitely recommend this little gem, and will definitely be returning asap!

  • Lovely stay at Stone Cottage. Gemma was the perfect host and so thorough and quick with all of her responses to any queries we had. We took our young baby along and Gemma made sure the cottage was ready with a bouncer and Moses basket and left a pouch of baby food together with biscuits for us and treats for the dogs! The cottage is spotlessly clean and has everything you will need and the decor is really lovely. It’s the perfect place to go with dogs and Gemma has thought of everything for them. Our dogs had a great time by the fire on the comfy dog beds provided. It’s a lovely location if you want to spent time outdoors and we visiting Hamsterley forest and Raby Castle which were both lovely walks. Thank you Gemma we’ve had a lovely little break for our first getaway with the little one!!

The Railway Manager's house is classic victorian and built by the railway in a grand style. At the centre of wonderful countryside and places of historical interest. Shildon Railway Museum, Bishop Auckland Castle, Binchester (Romans), Weardale Steam Railway, Beamish - living museum of the north, Bowes Museum Durham, Newcastle, Darlington, Barnard Castle. Weardale, Teesside, Pennines. The house has been handsomely decorated and maintained and electric gates complete the outside.
The accommodation is on three floors accessed via beautiful mahogany handrail stairs and carpeted throughout. It is warm and cosy with very effective central heating (plus a log burner in the 'snug' and an open gas fire in the living room). The large kitchen is fully equipped and has a table to match. A bathroom on the first floor with shower over, a wetroom on the ground floor and a wc with sink on the third. The main bedroom is on the first floor, a double and a single on the third and a comfortable sofa bed in the snug. There is space for a cot in each bedroom should it be needed.
Reviews have been very complementary. This house is first class in every way. Kynren! The Spanish Art Gallery! Railway Treasures! Shopping made easy: an extensive retail park is almost adjacent (including Tesco, Sainsbury's, M&S and Lidl. Low cost fuel!) Two pubs and a chip shop within easy (less than 5 minutes) walking distance. The Manager's House is special and self-contained if you'd like it to be. Behind its hedge and walls you are in your own world. Outside is a world of industrial and rural heritage, a town that is rediscovering itself and where huge investments continue to be made to create a treasure trove of culture and modern services to enjoy.

  • Trishs place was perfect for our needs. We stayed with the inlaws, and they slept in separate beds. The sofa bed was excellent. A spacious home and very warm, we even had the log fire on, just for the atmosphere. There were at least two pubs within a short walking distance, both of which we recommend, and there's loads of supermarkets and eateries nearby too.

  • Luxury house ,one of the best accommodation where I leaved this year when I worked away.

    Edmond2019-12-07T00:00:00Z
  • Really nice little cottage, down a tiny side lane (parking is close by on the main road through the village, but this never caused us a problem). It's a small cottage but the space has been used really well - for two people it was plenty spacious enough and I think it would still be fine with more. Sitting room is cosy and warm on dark winter nights, the bedrooms are comfortable and everything was set up really nicely, including a little hamper of food as a welcome. We cooked our own breakfasts/dinners every day - the kitchen is pretty well-equipped and everything just worked. Spent a really nice long weekend here in November, would happily come back if spending time in the area again.

    Susannah2019-11-18T00:00:00Z

Our dogs were as welcome as we were and fantastic fields near the property for them to roam. Wonderful hosts who have gone the extra mile to make the stay an enjoyable experience.

  • Great place to stay, really nice house. Lisa was great, really friendly and a pleasure to talk to. Many Thanks.

    Steve2019-04-18T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I had a lovely stay over night at Lisa’s house. It was the perfect stop on our long drive down from Scotland. Lisa was very welcoming and made us feel at home, the amenities were great and we loved the cats too (even the grumpy one!)

    Emily2019-04-14T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa’s place was ideal for my short fly fishing trip to the river Tees. Lisa was an attentive host with lots of local knowledge. The house provided everything I needed for a very enjoyable two night visit. Fully recommended.

  • had a great stay at Lisa's lovely Victorian house, hospitality was outstanding ...

    Edward2019-03-31T00:00:00Z
  • The Victorian house, which was found in a quiet country village was very clean and tidy. We received a warm and friendly welcome from Lisa. On arrival Lisa showed us around the kitchen, where there was a small breakfast prepared for us for the next morning. Our bedroom was in a beautiful warm traditional room. The bed was very clean and welcoming. Lisa was knowledgable about the surrounding area, and although she was friendly and on hand she wasn’t intrusive and we felt comfortable enough to use the kitchen and bathroom when we needed to. I would highly recommend this Air B&B.

  • Plum Cottage is a wonderful place to stay. The location is stunning - quiet and peaceful and over looking the river wear, it is a true slice of heaven. The cottage itself is gorgeous, combining the charm of a cottage with all mod cons - the Wi-Fi was the best we had experienced in a holiday let and the kitchen and bathrooms were fantastic - loads of hot water. The wood burning stove was the icing on the cake. Bev was the perfect host, friendly, welcoming and helpful while also leaving you to enjoy your time there - knowing she was a phone call away if you needed anything. A truly five star experience.

WALKING DISTANCE TO KYNREN IDEAL ALTERNATIVE TO A HOTEL for anyone working in the area. This beautifully fitted two bedroom first floor apartment is situated in the centre of Bishop Auckland. All amenities, bars, and shops are within walking distance, very well located as a base for lots of sight seeing including: the seaside, the Lake District, Hamsterley forest , Durham City and not forgetting Bishop Aucklands castle and Kynren.
Would be good accommodation for anyone working in the area , giving plenty of home comforts instead of a hotel . There are two double bedrooms, both with crisp fresh bedding for a very comfortable nights sleep, small kitchen area and generous size lounge , The bathroom has a bath with a shower over it . All brand new fittings, carpets and decor . The apartment offers cosy accommodation for 4 adults and has 1 designated parking space in the entrance courtyard. All basic essentials are included.
The biggest thing for the location is the walking distance access to Kyren the fantastic medieval show which is an outdoor epic tale of England this has proved to be very popular along with viewing tower in the marketplace and Bishop Auckland Castle. There are some very popular tea shops in the marketplace and some very nice places to eat on an evening just a very short drive away.

  • An absolute gem of a property, fresh smelling, beautifully clean, warm and with cosy beds. Friendly communication, a great stay.

    Clare2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is an absolute gem of a place to stay. Quite unexpected. Nigel and Ashley are fantastic hosts. The flat is immaculate and was lovely and warm when we arrived (Nov 2019) There was even milk, bread, butter and jam, plus cereal there. Very tastefully decorated. Very impressed. Highly recommended. When your sat nav says you have arrived at your destination, ignore it. Drive straight on, to the left of the shopping centre car park and straight down to almost the bottom. Just past the last lamp post on the left, is a set of gates. Drive in there for access to the property and park in one of the spaces. It was the easiest way to find it, thanks to Nigel. I can't recommend the property enough and Bishop Auckland has a lot to offer.

  • A stunning cottage, that is excellently presented. The bedrooms were gorgeous and everything was beautifully presented. Very thoughtful finishing touches, a nice bottle of wine & flowers in the window. A perfect location for our celebrations in Willington.

    Rosamond2019-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • All thanks to Chris. Everything was amazing, comfortable and so easy to find. We had a very memorable family gathering for Kynren, but also enjoyed so much more during our 4 day stay. The location and people are very special. Really loved seeing and hearing swallows on the wire outside, and to hear cockerel crow. Children had fun at the local Dairy Barn - playing on swings and eating ice cream. Adults appreciated the relaxed atmosphere there too. Beautiful short walks in the Wear valley by Witton Castle, fascinating to explore Escomb church, and an excellent Sunday lunch at the Copper Mine pub. Would’ve liked a longer stay!

    Martina2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing little cottage! Well equipped, even down to the smallest details in information packs. The addition of ensuites to both bedrooms was well thought out. Very comfortable and clean, would definitely recommend. If you want somewhere local to eat, The Copper Mine was excellent and dog friendly.

    Eleanor2019-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • Great stay, lovely location. Everything you need and the cottage is spotless. Definitely recommended if you need a place to stay in the area you cannot go wrong

    Quintin2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely cottage with the most spectacular views of County Durham. The cottage is very roomy and beautifully presented. Both the bedrooms having en suites is such a bonus to two adult couples having a great stay but with privacy. One great feature of the house, which was totally unexpected, was the external storage space and laundry, a very secure area for bikes and walking boots and an indoor washing line. The neighbours are friendly and welcoming and the local pubs are good.

    Margaret2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cottage, Very complete and clean. Nice place to spend hou holiday.

    Puk2019-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage is delightful - very clean and tastefully decorated, well equipped with a lovely spacious kitchen/diner. Tea, coffee, milk, condiments and a bottle of wine we’re awaiting us with fresh flowers that were nice touches. There are a selection of games and dvds as well as the TV. We were very comfortable there but the stairs are a bit steep so may not be suitable for people with mobility problems or small children. Chris was very helpful and suggested local places to eat and always responded promptly to queries. We visited, by car, Durham and Bishop Auckland and Seaham which is a bit further afield. All well worth a visit and we’ll be back to see how the Auckland project progresses and another visit to the Kynren outdoor spectacular.
