There is great history behind the hotel. The Vergulden Eenhoorn was established in 1702 as a city farm and used to be one of very few farmhouses the city of Amsterdam has. Het havenkantoor stamt uit 1900. Eind 19de eeuw was er zoveel industrie en scheepvaartverkeer dat de grachten in de binnenstad het niet meer aankonden. Daarom werd de Laakhaven gebouwd. Vanuit het Havenkantoor hield de havenmeester met zijn adjuncten toezicht op de haven en het scheepvaartverkeer. Het gebouw is nu een bijzondere boetiek hotel met geworden met alle hedendaagse luxe.
