Family-friendly holiday rentals in Shiga

Koji and Eri’s machiya is quite a special place! They expertly and tastefully restored an abandoned piece of history into a refined and peaceful place to stay in Kyoto. Eri personally welcomed us and showed us the house and they went out of their way to make sure our time in Kyoto was easy and enjoyable! The ofuro alone is worth it!

Our stay in Kyoto was great! The location was excellent--close to everything, yet quiet, which was so important as I'm a light sleeper. The apartment was very spacious, and my adult daughter and I were happy to have separate sleeping rooms as she tends to stay up later than me and to watch the TV. The host was gracious and showed us the necessary things upon arrival. Would definitely recommend!

The house offers an authentic experience of a traditional Japanese home. Spacious, has spaces for guest room, living room, kitchen, bedroom, storage, dressing and a cute little backyard. Loved the bathroom amenities and enjoyed the bathing tub. The hosts were very kind and waited for us to arrive. They welcomed us in and walked us through all the amenities and operations in the house. They also showed us bus routes to all the popular Kyoto spots laid out on a map. They even provided a bike for our grocery runs etc. Everything we ended up needing was in the house, like umbrellas, full-length mirror, extra stools, washer-dryer. The backyard is smoking-friendly. Overall, very happy that we decided to stay at this property.

Our group of 3 couples loved staying at Patrick and Akiko's house. It was an excellent combination of traditional Japanese with modern amenities. We especially appreciated the separate living area with couches where we could sit, hang out and discuss our adventures from the day. The hosts also provided some tea for people to enjoy. The hosts shared places to visit and local restaurants, which was very thoughtful. The laundry was a little confusing, but we eventually figured it out. The house is very conveniently located near a train station, allowing us to go out on day trips to Himeji castle, Kobe and Osaka. 2 of the rooms have Western-style raised beds, and the 3rd room had Japanese futon matresses. Umbrellas were also provided for use during our stay. Patrick and Akiko clearly put a lot of thought into their guests. We would definitely recommend staying here.

This listing is a great value, and can easily accommodate a good sized group! We had 8 people in our group, and it was just enough space for us! The location is peaceful and close to bus stops, train stations, and convenience stores. Everything we wanted from our stay. Thank you!

Place is very spacious, very clean and good air conditioner. Very comfortable bedding. Shower is plenty big. If you are 6ft or over you’ll need to occasionally duck but tat all over Japan. It’s definitely not a problem. Way better than staying in a hotel as I could sneak downstairs as I am always up before my family and could get work done before activities. Cabs and Ubers go right by, 7-11 is baseball throw away and an excellent I Indian restaurant on the corner. If you have a kid who wants McDonald’s it’s right there too. You’ll have to take a cab or Uber unless you want to walk 20 minutes to things but as I said they are readily available and only cost $10. Highly recommend super spacious and I felt a much better option for us than a small hotel room. Also it had a good washer for clothes.

This place had a great location for bus stations leading to many attractions in the Higashiyama area. The bath tub was awesome. The rooms were more spacious than most of the other places we’ve stayed at in Japan. It felt like a traditional Japanese home without sacrificing on modern amenities. The washer/dryer was a huge plus to have. Can’t recommend enough!

We simply loved staying in this home. The location is ideal for experiencing Kyoto. Peaceful and quiet and yet five minutes to metro/bus stops. And we also walked to many sites and temples. Ume is a gracious host and the home is a beautiful and historic building. We were very comfortable with two adults and two teenagers. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous house for a family trip ! - Clean, spacious, felt like home immediately - The location is THE best IMHO. Easy to access subway, Eizan line and mt. Hiei is nearby - 7-11 is 20 sec walk! + river To sum up - for me it’s the best place to stay in Kyoto.

The house is private and quiet, the surrounding facilities are also convenient, the subway is about five or six minutes away, and there is also a 24-hour convenience store.Especially the landlord was very friendly!I will introduce Kyoto and recommended attractions, and help pick up and drop off ~ The house is very comfortable. I will stay here again if I come to Kyoto next time!

This house is lovely awesome and perfectly clean. Our stay was wonderful and more worth the price. The private onsen inside the tiny Japanese garden is beautiful. The location is very quiet, near the river and less 5 minutes by walk from the station and konbini. Everything you need is provided inside the house, so you don’t have to worry about

Great host with quick responses! Asked them if they have infant chairs, and they actually ordered one online for me and got it delivered the next day! Walking distance to family mart, supermarket, and restaurant. Thanks for having us

Perfect stay in a silent part of Gion District. Very cosy and not only a 15min walk to the Yasaka Pagoda

Great stay for a family of 4. Excellent access to trains (2 min walk) and therefore all major tourist sights. Quiet location right on the river. Host was very helpful and went the extra mile for us. We would definitely recommend.

This listing was an absolute dream come true. It’s very spacious, cozy, well-stocked with towels, linens, etc. Our host so kindly let us check-in a bit early and was so sweet and accommodating. The bathrooms and showers were so clean and had cool features. This was a wonderful stay and we really appreciated how close this listing is to various tourist spots and shopping areas like Fushimi Inari Taisha, LoFt, Nishiki Market, etc. Many places are easily accessible by train or walking. Overall we cannot rave about this Airbnb enough and we thank the host so much for her hospitality! :)

House is spotless and very comfortable for 6 people. It’s very near a family mart 150m away and it’s very convenient to a subway station as well (within 5 min walk). If you are driving the roads are a little narrow so do be careful on that. House is great and very very comfortable for all of us. Thank you for the wonderful stay!

As so many have said, the location couldn’t be beat – right in the heart of the Gion district. But it wasn’t just the location. It was such a thoughtfully designed space – with many small touches such as the views of the small gardens, the high-end fixtures, and a shower/tub “room” that was amazing. We felt like we were staying in a high-end hotel, but with much more room. The folks who checked us in were also extremely helpful, especially Hassan. The only drawback was getting to the train station at the end of our stay. We called a taxi but it never showed up, perhaps because it’s difficult for cars to drive up the narrow road.

Amazing, our favourite place that we stayed in Japan. Yuya gave us a tour of the place and explained everything so well, nothing was an issue. If you want to stay in a cute and cosy Japanese house then stay here, you won’t regret it. Our only regret was that we only stayed two nights. Stay longer in Kyoto as opposed to Osaka

Very homely place to share with 4-6 friends. Very accommodating and comfortable. The Open Air Bath was to AMAZING! HIGHLY RECOMMEND My only gripe is that we were looking for it at night and the Google address does not show you it is in a little alley off the main street.

Fantastic and very accessible location in buzzing area of Gion and the wider Kyoto region with great views of the river yet quiet and relaxing. Hosts are wonderfully proactive, providing everything you need pre, during and post our stay. We loved the place and the hosts were outstanding. Great location and perfect place for 2 people to stay. The host was very accommodating with our luggage. The elevator was nice for taking our luggage up and down too.
