This local walk is a 26 minute drive away from our property. The Rainbow Mountain Summit Track takes around 2-3 hours to complete ( 1 hour up and 1 hour down average time). The track is 2.5 kilometres long. It starts relatively flat but becomes steeper as more progress is made up the mountain. An average level of fitness is required to complete the walk. Once at the top, you can take in the spectacular 360 degree views of the central plateau valley. There is a sitting bench area where you can have a break with some snacks and drink.

This is a very scenic walk up to a lookout that takes in the surrounding views of lakes, farmland, thermal lakes and native bush. It’s challenging enough that you need to have a reasonable amount of fitness. Some people bike it and for that you would need to be quite fit unless you want to push your bike all the way up. Can be a bit slippery after rain so take care. The views are well worth the climb though. Take a snack to have up the top at one of the picnic tables.

wonderful views, it's on the road between Rotorua and Taupo. It us Not far from a walk to the top of a mountain, we have taken our children when they were 6 and they coped with the walk. It takes about an hour to walk to the top. You could stop here on the way in our out of town or combine with kerosene creek or Waikete thermal pools as a day trip.
