With all the bars in Evanston, you might not expect that the town was a hotbed of the Temperance Movement. Frances E. Willard was a leader and Evanston stayed dry for decades after prohibition was repealed. You'll note that a distillery and a brewery pay homage to Willard: F.E.W. Distillery and Temperance Brewing. Willard led a exemplary women-centric life. She's one of my heroes because, despite the chaos prohibition caused, she fought for women whose lives were devastated by men who drank away their pay or played out their anger on a system that all but enslaved them by raining down violence on their wives and children. Oops! Am I showing my politics.
