A nice short trail to see the coast! To get there you take the Onomea Scenic drive (4 miles) and you will pass both the botanical gardens and What's Shakin
This is about a mile hike down to the bay where a steam meets the ocean. Stunning! Park along the side of the road. About 6 miles north of Hilo
Beautiful scenic drive (or bike ride). Follow highway 19 north of Hilo. Between mile marker 7 and 8 take the right hand turn that is marked "scenic Drive". Combine with a visit to the Botanical Garden.
If you don’t feel like paying to walk through the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve, you can walk this scenic trail for free.
This short hike has two trailheads along the beautiful Onomea Scenic Drive and takes you to a beautiful promontory that gives you great views of Onomea Bay. There’s an entrance near Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden (Donkey Trail side), but we recommend entering at the second (and more accessible) trailhead, about half a mile south of the botanical garden. Tip: wear a pair of inexpensive water shoes (not flip flops) that have a good grip so that you can easily cross Onomea Stream (which is safe and shallow). See BigIslandHikes.com for details on this and other great hikes!
