This bright studio with clean Scandinavian design has all the essentials as a base for your trip. It's close to Selfoss and Highway 1 (just 10 minutes by car), 45 minutes from downtown Reykjavík or the Golden Circle. But it's just far enough off the beaten path to be a quiet and peaceful little oasis away from all the tourists. This studio is one of 16 apartments built especially for guests at the old fish factory, right on the seaside.

The space
The studio was built in 2017, and everything is new. Photographs of Icelandic landscapes decorate the walls. If you get stuck inside, there's a TV, complete with Roku (Netflix, anyone?). But of course, you'll probably prefer to spend your time outside the apartment, exploring the many nearby natural attractions. I can name at least 6 waterfalls within 1 hours' drive, as well as 5 hot springs (including the Blue Lagoon), and three geothermal swimming pools within 15 minutes' drive. Two excellent restaurants are within 5 minutes (1 walking, 1 by car). This studio has a private deck, but please note that there's no view. If you want an apartment with a view, we have several other listings located elsewhere in the building. We also have bigger 1-bedroom apartments in the same building. But if you just need a space for two or a family with a comfortable bed, a sofa bed, warm and fluffy duvets, big shower, kitchenette, and coffee and tea, this could be your place.

Where you’ll be

Eyrarbakki, Iceland

Eyrarbakki could have been the capital of Iceland, believe it or not! Its heyday was about 100 years ago, and many lovely old houses still stand. Look for names and years on plaques on the outside of the houses as you walk or drive the main street! These days, it's a quiet, peaceful village of 550 inhabitants. Though the seawall that protects the village blocks the views of the ocean from street level, if you climb atop it there's a path that extends the length of the village and you can enjoy watching the ocean and the seabirds. To get to the path, just go behind the building and you're there.

I'm an American living in Iceland. Together with my husband Jóhann (who's Icelandic), we own and manage the local restaurant Rauða Húsið (The Red House) as well as 16 guest apartments and a small hostel here in Eyrarbakki.

Our apartments are located in the old fish factory in the heart of the village, right on the seaside. This large building was abandoned for many years after the harbor closed and the fishing industry shut down. Piece by piece, we are turning it into apartments for guests. It's perhaps not your typical Airbnb, because the apartments are purpose-built as guest accommodation—but it's a tiny village and we would like to invite more visitors to come and stay without taking family homes off the market. A small part of the building has a 36-bed hostel, and that's where we will meet you with the keys.

My husband and I are both avid travelers, having living in Thailand, Mexico, and Honduras before moving to Iceland. We love Iceland and our little village, and we're happy to share it with you! If you're looking for travel advice or a local perspective, don't hesitate to send me a message or ask when you get here.

We manage our 16 apartments as a family business with 3 generations involved. We look forward to welcoming you.
